Heterophyid metacercarial infections in brackish water fishes, i.e., perch, shad, mullet, redlip mullet, and goby, of Jinju-man (Bay), Kyongsangnam-do, Korea, were investigated using a digestion technique. Among 45 perch (Lateolabrax japonicus), the metacercariae of Heterophyopsis continua were found in 55.6% (18.5 metacercariae per fish), Stictodora spp. in 28.9% (3.6), and Metagonimus takahashii in 6.7% (17.0). The metacercariae of H. continua were detected in 23 (65.7%) of 35 shad (Konosirus punctatus). Among 15 mullet (Mugil cephalus), the metacercariae of Pygidiopsis summa were found in 100% (105.9 metacercariae per fish), Heterophyes nocens in 40.0% (8.5), H. continua in 13.3%, and Stictodora spp. in 6.7%. Among 12 redlip mullet (Chelon haematocheilus), the metacercariae of P. summa were detected in 91.7% (1,299 metacercariae per fish), H. nocens in 16.7%, and Stictodora spp. in 16.7%. Among 35 gobies (Acanthogobius flavimanus), the metacercariae of Stictodora spp. were found in 82.9% (44.5 metacercariae per fish), and H. continua in 25.7% (2.8). The adult flukes recovered from a cat experimentally infected with metacercariae from perches were compatible with M. takahashii. The results confirm that the estuarine fish in Jinju-man (Bay) are heavily infected with heterophyid metacercariae. Furthermore, it was found for the first time that the perch acts as a second intermediate host for M. takahashii.  相似文献

The discus fishes (Symphysodon spp.) are economically important ornamental species. Thirteen microsatellite markers were developed from a CT(12) - and CA(12) -enriched whole genomic DNA library of Symphysodon discus. Allelic variability was tested on 44 individuals of two species (S. discus and S. aequifasciatus). Allelic richness ranged from two to 11 alleles per locus and observed heterozygosities from 0.083 to 0.998. All loci were at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and no pair of loci showed linkage disequilibrium within a species. Cross-species amplification was also successfully performed in the Neotropical cichlids Uaru amphiacanthoides, Hoplarchus psittacus, Hypselecara coryphaenoides, Pterophyllum sp., Mesonauta sp. and Heros sp.  相似文献

The occurrence of the metacercaria of Plagioporus sp. encysted in two species of corals, Porites compressa and P. lobata, from Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, is reported. This parasite is covered with a bilayered metacercarial cyst the chemical compositions of which have been ascertained by histochemistry. Both of these cyst walls are believed to be secreted by the parasite. In addition, the cytochemical properties of the metacercaria and the adjacent host cells are reported.Histo- and cytopathological alterations in the epidermis and gastrodermis of the coral hosts were studied and such changes have been interpreted to have resulted from mechanical pressure exerted by the parasite.Because gross observations had revealed the presence of elevated nodules at the sites where the metacercariae occurred, chemical analysis was conducted to ascertain whether this larval trematode had induced hypercalcification in the hosts. However, calcium determinations of Decal in which pieces of parasitized coral tissue had been decalcified revealed that hypercalcification had not occurred.Examination of the cellular reactions in both species of Porites revealed that if the gastrodermis had been ruptured, partial encapsulation of the parasite occurs. The reaction cells include free cells of the mesoglea that become fused, accidentally trapped cnidoblasts and nutritive-muscular cells, and gastrodermal interstitial cells. Despite the partial encapsulation, the encysted metacercariae did not appear to be injured.  相似文献

The identification of Paragonimus spp. lung flukes is based on the morphology of both the metacercaria and the adult. A very small Paragonimus sp. metacercaria was found in a freshwater crab caught in Kanchanaburi Province, West Thailand, an area where metacercariae of Paragonimus heterotremus had not been found. The metacercariae cysts were 180-204 microm in diameter, which was smaller than metacercariae of P. heterotremus. The coefficient of difference in body size between this metacercaria and P. heterotremus was 1.69, which was greater than a subspecific difference. Adults recovered from the lungs of a cat fed with the metacercariae were morphologically similar to, but smaller than, P. heterotremus dissected from the lungs of a feline experimental host. The tegumental spines of the worm in this study were singly spaced in arrangement, which is similar to, but larger than, the spines of P. heterotremus. Therefore, Paragonimus pseudoheterotremus is proposed as a new species.  相似文献

The benthic and demersal fishes of the lower Forth Estuary, east Scotland, were sampled by Agassiz trawling from January 1982–December 2001. Three stations of varying distance from the mouth of the estuary were trawled at high and low water in 5 months of each year, a total of 30 trawls per annum using the same ship and net design throughout. Of 30 species collected over this period, whiting Merlangius merlangus was the most abundant, followed by eelpout Zoarces viviparus , pogge Agonus cataphractus , flounder Platichthys flesus and plaice Pleuronectes platessa . The 10 most abundant species accounted for 97·8% of the total benthic-demersal fish abundance. There was no trend in total annual species richness sampled, though total annual abundance of fishes captured decreased significantly from 1982–2001. This was largely caused by significant declines in abundance of whiting and eelpout. Fatherlasher Myoxocephalus scorpius showed a significant linear increase. None of the seven remaining most abundant species exhibited significant trends in abundance. Decline of eelpout may be attributable to increases in water temperature adversely affecting reproductive success. This is suggested by a significant negative correlation of mean annual abundance with January bottom temperature in the previous year.  相似文献

Autopsies of Abbottina rivularis from southern Primorye (drainage-basin of Artyomovka River, Razdolnaya River and Khanka Lake) and southern Sakhalin Island (Maloye Chibisanskoye Lake) revealed high indices of diplostomum-infected lenses of these fishes. The metacercariae have been identified as Diplostomum parviventosum Dubois, 1932, D. huromense (La Rue, 1927), D. helveticum (Dubois, 1929), D. mergi Dubois, 1932, Diplostomum sp. The most lenses of parasitized eyes possessed dorsally situated sperical protrusions of the lens capsule ("cyst"). Earlier, this phenomenon was found by Larson (1965) in naturally infected bullheads (Ictalurus). The metacercarial infection level and its dynamics, age-composition of metacercariae in both lenses and "cysts", and "cysts" production are discussed.  相似文献

The pond smelt Hypomesus olidus and minnow Zacco platypus were collected from the Soyang and Daechung Lakes in January 2003, and their metacercarial infections was examined by the muscle compression and artificial digestion techniques. In the Soyang Lake, 161 metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis (0.35 per fish) were harvested from 459 pond smelts examined. Also, 13 metacercariae of C. sinensis (0.43 per fish), 1 of Metagonimus sp., 4 of Echinostoma sp., 148 of Centrocestus armatus and 44 unidentified species were collected from 30 minnows. In the Daechung Lake, 369 metacercariae of C. sinensis (3.69 per fish) and 51 unidentified species were recovered from 100 pond smelts. The metacercariae of C. sinensis were fed to experimental rats, in which the adult flukes were identified. The pond smelts and minnows collected from the Soyang and Daechung Lakes were verified to be the second intermediate hosts and the sources of human C. sinensis infection.  相似文献

Only two species of the strigeid subgenus Apatemon (Apatemon) sensu Sudarikov (1959), Apatemon gracilis (Rudolhi, 1819) and A. annuligerum (von Nordmann, 1832), are known to infect British fishes. A. annuligerum is poorly characterised, with few life-cycle data available, since only the adult and metacercarial stages have been described. Both of these life-stages demonstrate only minor morphological differences from those of A. gracilis. The multidimensional approach of principal components analysis (PCA) was employed to determine the intra- and inter-specific morphological variation that exists for metacercariae of these species. Analyses revealed that metacercarial morphometrics cannot confidently discriminate between Apatemon gracilis and A. annuligerum specimens. Indeed, levels of intra-specific variation present between A. gracilis metacercariae originating from different piscine hosts were as marked for certain populations as those between the two nominal species. Individual populations of A. gracilis metacercariae differed most in the relative dimensions of their internal organs, whereas variation between the two nominal species was primarily in length-related variables. A. gracilis specimens originating from Welsh and Scottish stoneloach represented two populations with the most comparable total body lengths, yet clustered separately. Conversely, A. gracilis metacercariae infecting rainbow trout and salmon parr differed markedly in size, but demonstrated minimal composite morphological variation. Much, if not all, of the variation described between populations and species of parasites can be attributed to host or to metacercarial location within a particular host. These findings and the lack of strong life-cycle data for A. annuligerum place some doubt on its validity as a species discrete from A. gracilis.  相似文献

Excystment of metacercariae of Parorchis acanthus, Posthodiplostomoides leonensis, Posthodiplostomum sp. and Clinostomum tilapiae was found to be an active process initiated by the metacercariae when the correct physico-chemical conditions exist in the environment; but in the excystment of Posthodiplostomum nanum the metacercaria seems not to take part in the process. Temperature, osmotic pressure, pH and eH are factors which influence all the five species studied. Fresh ox bile was found not to be an absolute necessity for the excystment of the five species studied but its presence in the medium increased the rate of excystment of three species.  相似文献

The prevalence of foodborne trematode (FBT) metacercariae was investigated in fish from 2 localities of northern Vietnam in 2004-2005. Freshwater fish (9 species) were collected from local markets in Hanoi City (n=76) and Nam Dinh Province (n=79), and were examined for FBT metacercariae using the artificial digestion technique. Adult flukes were obtained from hamsters experimentally infected with the metacercariae at day 8 post-infection. Three (Haplorchis pumilio, Centrocestus formosanus, and Procerovum varium) and 6 (Haplorchis taichui, H. pumilio, C. formosanus, P. varium, Stellantchasmus falcatus, and Heterophyopsis continua) species of FBT metacercariae were detected in the 2 regions, respectively. Overall, among the positive fish species, H. pumilio metacercariae were detected in 104 (80.0%) of 130 fish examined (metacercarial density per infected fish; 64.2). C. formosanus metacercariae were found in 37 (40.2%) of 92 fish (metacercarial density; 14.7). P. varium metacercariae were detected in 19 (63.3%) of 30 fish (Anabas testudineus and Mugil cephalus) (metacercarial density; 247.7). S. falcatus metacercariae were found in all 10 M. cephalus examined (metacercarial density; 84.4). H. continua metacercariae (2 in number) were detected in 1 fish of Coilia lindmani. Morphologic characteristics of the FBT metacercariae and their experimentally obtained adults were described. The results have demonstrated that various FBT species are prevalent in northen parts of Vietnam.  相似文献

High performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) was used to analyse the neutral lipids in the rediae, cercariae, and encysted metacercariae of Echinostoma caproni from Biomphalaria glabrata snails. Visual observations of the chromatograms showed that the most abundant lipid fraction in all stages was free sterol. Quantification of the free sterol revealed mean weights of 2.7 +/- 0.64 ng per redia, 0.53 +/- 0.023 ng per cercaria, and 0.081 +/- 0.0098 ng per encysted metacercaria. Oil Red O staining of the larval stages confirmed the presence of lipids within the rediae and cercariae but did not show lipids in the encysted metacercariae. The dimunition in neutral lipids from the cercarial to the encysted metacercarial stage does not support a previous observation that fat increases in successive phases of the digenean life cycle.

A total of 6 helminth species were recorded during helminthological examination of 50 Chapalichthys encaustus from Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. Helminth species identified included: Salsuginus sp. (an undescribed monogenea); Posthodiplostomum minimum (metacercariae); Cyclustera ralli (metacestode); Polymorphus brevis (cystacanth); Contracaecum sp. (nematode larvae); and Rhabdochona lichtenfelsi (adult nematode). Of these, 2 (Salsuginus sp. and R. lichtenfelsi) are specialist species. The observed species richness, individual parasite abundance, and diversity were low. Data suggest that host specificity is an important factor contributing to observed community composition and richness. Host feeding habits and helminth species availability seem to determine the characteristics of these helminth assemblages.  相似文献

In total, 9 endohelminth species were found to parasitize 7 fish species (2 cyprinids, 4 goodeids, and 1 poeciilid) from La Mintzita Reservoir, Michoacán, in central Mexico; 5 were larvae, including 3 allogenic species (Clinostomum complanatum, Tylodelphys sp., Posthodiplostomum minimum) and 2 autogenic species (Serpinema trispinosum, Spiroxys sp.). Four were enteric autogenic adults, i.e., Margotrema bravoae, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, Proteocephalus longicollis, and Rhabdochona lichtenfelsi. The metacercariae of P. minimum reached the highest levels of prevalence and mean abundance among host species. Our results confirm the depauperate nature of the helminth communities of freshwater fishes from central Mexico. On the basis of this data set, we estimated the total endohelminth species richness for each component community by using 7 nonparametric estimators whose performance was evaluated with the unscaled measures of bias, precision, and accuracy. We found that Chaol and Bootstrap are the most precise and least biased methods for the 7 component communities: however, species richness was consistently underestimated. The underestimation was an unavoidable consequence of the patchy distribution of helminth species among different component communities, particularly at the small sample size used in our study.  相似文献

The infection, known as yellow spot disease, produced by metacercariae of Clinostomum spp. was studied in fishes of the Taquari river, located in Jataizinho, Paraná State, Brazil. A total of 1,582 specimens, belonging to 36 species, were collected between March 1999 and April 2001. Yellow spot disease was observed only in Gymnotus carapo Linnaeus, 1814 (Gymnotiformes, Gymnotidae) and Cichlasoma paranaense Kullander, 1983 (Perciformes, Cichlidae). This parasitism was generated by metacercariae of Clinostomum complanatum (Rudolphi, 1814) (Digenea, Clinostomidae). Among the 88 specimens of G. carapo examined, 7 (prevalence = 8%) had cysts of the parasite. Four of them were captured in July 1999 and three in October 1999. In the other months, no specimen found was infected. Using relative condition factor (Kn) analysis, it was determined that both infected and non-infected specimens had a total weight equal to the theoretically expected value for each total length (Kn = 1.0). Among 56 individuals of Cichlasoma paranaense, 6 (prevalence = 10.7%) had between 1 and 27 metacercariae of C. complanatum (mean intensity of infection = 9.3 +/- 9.6). In March 1999 and April of both 2000 and 2001, the specimens examined were not infected. The infected fish had a total weight higher than the expected value (Kn > 1.0), while the non-infected fish had a weight equal to the expected value (Kn = 1.0).  相似文献

Microphallus species occur primarily as intestinal parasites of birds and mammals, and metacercariae of a new species belonging to this genus have been discovered from the crab, Macrophthalmus dilatatus, in the Republic of Korea. The metacercaria of this fluke was round with 2 thick walls, and the excysted one had mature genital organs. The adult flukes recovered from experimentally infected chicks had numerous intrauterine eggs, well-developed pars prostatica, widely bifurcating ceca, and prominent uterine bulge. After observing internal structures, it was concluded that this species is different from any other known Microphallus spp. Based on the morphology of metacercariae and adult flukes, we describe this specimen as a new species, Microphallus koreana n. sp.  相似文献

Black spot is a common disease syndrome of freshwater fishes. This study provides information on the rank of density of the black spot agent and opercular bone alterations associated with at least one digenean, Uvulifer sp., infecting native and non-native catostomids and cyprinids of the Upper Colorado River Basin. We evaluated the density rank of pigmented metacercariae and associated alterations in the operculum of the bluehead sucker Catostomus discobolus, flannelmouth sucker C. latipinnis, white sucker C. commersoni, catostomid hybrids, roundtail chub Gila robusta, and creek chub Semotilus atromaculatus, sampled from Muddy Creek, Wyoming, USA in 2003 or 2004. All fish species contained individuals that exhibited gross signs of the black spot agent. Bluehead and flannelmouth suckers had 100% prevalence of infection. Although the other suckers and chubs contained encysted metacercariae in at least one individual, the presence of pigmented metacercariae was not apparent (i.e. based on gross observations) in many individuals. Catostomids had higher densities of metacercariae than cyprinids, as shown by frequency distributions of density ranks. Opercular holes (i.e. holes that completely penetrated the opercle and were in direct association with the pigment associated metacercariae) and pockets (depressions on the external surface of the opercle associated with metacercariae) were abundant among catostomids but rare among cyprinids.  相似文献

A 2-yr, seasonal, parasitological study of 1,435 fish, belonging to 4 species of native fishes and 7 species of nonnative fishes from the lower Little Colorado River (LCR) and tributary creeks, Grand Canyon, Arizona, yielded 17 species of parasites. These comprised 1 myxozoan (Henneguya exilis), 2 copepods (Ergasilus arthrosis and Lernaea cyprinacea), 1 acarine (Oribatida gen. sp.), 1 piscicolid leech (Myzobdella lugubris), 4 monogeneans (Gyrodactylus hoffmani, Gyrodactylus sp., Dactylogyrus extensus, and Ligictaluridus floridanus), 4 nematodes (Contracaecum sp., Eustrongylides sp., Rhabdochona sp., and Truttaedacnitis truttae), 3 cestodes (Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, Corallobothrium fimbriatum, and Megathylacoides giganteum), and 2 trematodes (Ornithodiplostomum sp. and Posthodiplostomum sp.). Rhabdochona sp. was the only adult parasite native to the LCR. Infection intensities of Ornithodiplostomum sp. and B. acheilognathi were positively correlated with length of the humpback chub Gila cypha. Adult helminths showed a high degree of host specificity, except B. acheilognathi, which was recovered from all fish species examined but was most abundant in cyprinids. Abundance of B. acheilognathi in the humpback chub was highest in the fall and lowest in the summer in both reaches of the LCR. There was no major taxonomic difference in parasite assemblages between the 2 different reaches of the river (LC1 and LC2). Parasite community diversity was very similar in humpback chub, regardless of sampling site or time. The parasite fauna of the LCR is numerically dominated by B. acheilognathi and metacercariae of Ornithodiplostomum sp. The richest and most diverse component community occurred in a nonnative species, the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, but infracommunity species richness was highest in a native host, humpback chub.  相似文献
