Summary The objective was to find the optimum range of water contents for inducing better growth, physiological efficiency and yield potential of barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. var. K18). A pot culture experiment was conducted in the Division of Crop Physiology and Biochemistry Kanpur-2. The plants were subjected to various soil moisture stresses,i.e., 0.15, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60 and 0.75 atm tension throughout the crop growth period measured by irrometers.Plants maintained at 0.45 soil moisture tension required 19.07 litre of water and had the best water use efficiency (1765 mg dm/litre of water) which favourably influenced the leaf water balance (85.9%), plant growth as measured by plant height (85.4 cm) and tiller production (35.6) per hill, photosynthetic efficiency (2.185 mg CO2/g dm/h), grain number (722) and grain yield (33.7 g) per hill while plants irrigated at a tension greater than 0.45 SMT did not develop as well. However, protein and gluten percentage increased gradually with the subsequent increase in soil moisture tension. On the other hand respiration rate (2.090 mg CO2/g dm/hr) and leaf area (4375 cm2) were recorded to be the highest at 0.60 and 0.30 atm SMT respectively.Thus it is suggested that for reaping high harvest of barley crop, the physiological need of water (19.07 litre) in total of plant life should be made available through scheduled irrigation based on maintenance of plant at 0.45 SMT from seeding to maturity.  相似文献

Summary The effect of soil moisture tension on nitrate reductase and on nitrate accumulation in wheat plants was studied. Nitrate reductase activity was inhibited when soil moisture tension was increased to about 3.0 bars associated with a drop in leaf relative water content to about 90 per cent. The decrease in nitrate reductase activity did not result in nitrate accumulation in short-term experiments (10 days) when plants were exposed to only 1–2 cycles of elevated soil moisture tensions. However, when the period of different moisture regimes was extended up to the flag-leaf stage, nitrate accumulated in stressed plants.Significant increase in plant nitrate concentration as a result of increased moisture tensions was only found at the high levels of added nitrogen. On the other hand, moisture tensions had no effect on the content of total nitrogen in wheat shoots, implying that nitrate reduction was rather limiting under stress conditions.An effect of soil moisture tension and nitrogen nutrition on dry matter production by wheat seedlings was also found in the long-term experiment. At the highest dose of soil nitrogen an increase in maximal soil moisture tension from 0.1 to 0.33 bars reduced plant growth; at intermediate nitrogen doses only tension higher than 2 bars reduced growth. Veronica spicata and Phleum phleoides are calcicole plants,mainly occurring on neutral or alkaline soil. An experimentof 16 weeks duration was performed in a glasshouse with theobjective of elucidating the influence of soil moisture levelon soil solution chemistry, and biomass concentrations and uptakeof mineral nutrients by the plants. Seven levels of moisture,corresponding to 35–85% of the water holding capacity(WHC) of the soil, were tested. Soil solution HCO3, P and Mnconcentrations, and pH, increased, whereas Ca, Mg and Zn concentrationsdecreased, with increasing soil moisture. Concentrations ofK were highest at 50–70% WHC. Concentrations and amountsof P, Zn and Mn in the two species were usually related to soilsolution concentrations; these are elements with low solubilityand availability in calcareous soils. Concentrations of nutrientsin biomass were more influenced by soil moisture in V. spicatathan inP. phleoides . This indicates that P. phleoides is morecapable of controlling its uptake of mineral nutrients, whereasV. spicata is sensitive to variations in soil moisture. It isconcluded that variation in soil moisture regime may greatlyinfluence concentrations of mineral nutrients in calcareoussoil solutions and their uptake by plants. Species able to utilizethese solubility fluctuations may have an advantage in competitionfor nutrients. Variation in soil moisture content might evenbe a prerequisite for adequate acquisition of mineral nutrientsand growth of plants on limestone soils, thereby influencingthe field distribution of native plants among habitats. Sorghum plants were grown in the laboratory with the root systemof each plant split between two pots. Three split pot treatmentswere established: (– –) treatment, where both halvesof the root were free from Striga; (– +) treatment, wherethe soil in one half of the pot had been inoculated with Strigaseed; (+ +) treatment, where the soil in both halves of thepot had been inoculated with Striga. Seed, stem and leaf weight were reduced by 82, 60 and 26 percent respectively in (+ +) plants compared to (– –)plants. Partially infected plants (– +) behaved similarlyto (+ +) plants. Rates of light saturating carbon dioxide fixation in (+ +) and(– +) plants were only 60 per cent of those measured in(– –) plants. This reduction was independent ofchanges in stomatal conductance. The effects of Striga on the growth and photosynthesis of sorghumappear to be independent of the degree of parasitism to whichthe host is subjected. The difference in production betweeninfected and uninfected plants was greater than could be accountedfor in term of competition with the parasite for resources,and Striga appears to have a pathological effect on the host. Festuca arundinaceae was grown at high and low wind-speed attwo levels of either soil phosphorus or soil nitrogen. At increasedwind-speed, mean relative growth rate and leaf extension ratewere reduced when plants were grown with high nutrient concentrationsand further reduced when phosphorus or nitrogen stress was imposedon the plants. Transpiration was increased at high wind-speedexcept under conditions of phosphorus stress, where the ratewas actually decreased. Relationships between water stress,wind and nutrient status are discussed, especially in relationto the possible role of phosphorus stress in causing sclerophylly. The extension growth of Festuca arundinacea was reduced by shaking,and the leaves formed during shaking were thinner and narrowerthan the controls. The response to shaking was modified by thenutritional status of the plant — shaken plants took upmore phosphorus from a phosphorus deficient soil than the controlsand this advantage seemed to offset the influence of shaking. Shaken plants displayed a higher stomatal conductance and alower water potential than the controls, though it was consideredthat the effect of shaking could not be attributed entirelyto differences in water potential. Forage maize (Zea mays L.) was grown in monocultures at populationdensities ranging from 4·9 to 11·1 plants m–2.Data for plant growth analysis were obtained from six harvestscarried out from 21 to 115 d after planting. Conventional plantgrowth analysis indicated that improvements in forage productivityper unit land area by high population density resulted directlyfrom increased plant presence. Reduction in dry weight per shootat high population density was associated with reduced unitleaf rate. Leaf area ratio was little affected, which may implythat competition for soil nutrients or oxygen was the chiefcause of plant interference. Yield component analysis demonstratedthe increasing importance of population density treatments asa source of variation as growth progressed. Direct relationshipsbetween variation in yield per plant and variation in two yieldcomponents, stem diameter and the inverse of leaf area ratio,were demonstrated. The appearance and growth of individual leaves were examinedin crops of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) grown either fullyirrigated or droughted from plant emergence. The rate of appearance of leaves was increased and the durationof growth decreased in leaves of the droughted crop in 1986but not in 1987. In droughted crops, leaf growth rate was correlatedwith afternoon measurements of leaf water potential (1) andturgor (P), being reduced in comparison with that in irrigatedcrops when 1 and P were less than –0.28 and 0.5 MPa respectively.Leaf growth was highly correlated to soil moisture deficit (SMD)and declined rapidly when the SMD was greater than 16 mm. Quercus floribunda Lindl. (tilonj oak), a late successionalspecies, and Cupressus torulosa D. Don. (surai), an early successionalspecies, were compared in terms of seed germination and seedlinggrowth. In Petri dish germination tests in which light quality,temperature and osmotic water stress were varied, the germinationof both species was reduced by continuous dark or far-red lightand by osmotic water stress. These effects were greater on thegermination of surai than on that of tilonj oak. The growthof seedlings in soil was measured over a twelve-month periodduring which different levels of shading and different wateringregimes were applied. Surai was less affected than tilonj oakby reduced soil moisture, but the effect of deep shade treatmentswas greater on surai than with tilonj oak. At higher soil moisturestress seedlings of surai attained greater height then tilonjoak, but the latter achieved higher dry weight and a higherroot: shoot and lower leaf-weight ratio. When CCC was applied as a spray to the leaves of Brassica oleraceaL. (Brussels sprout) grown in pots, plant height and mean internodelength were reduced. The effects appeared more slowly and wereless pronounced than those previously observed when CCC hadbeen applied to the soil; other differences were that root growthwas not inhibited, stem weight was only significantly reducedat the highest rate of application (2 per cent), and stomatalnumber per unit area of lower leaf epidermis was not affected.In common with soil applications, leaf thickness, stem diameter,and the percentage moisture contents of the leaves were allincreased by foliar applications.In a further experiment theprogress of wilting was observed in untreated plants and inplants treated with CCC applied either to the leaves or to thesoil. The rates of water loss and the moisture contents of theleaf laminae of the treated plants, after a period of wilting,were not significantly different from the controls. The treatedplants, however, looked less ‘wilted‘ for the changein angle of the leaf lamina to the stem was less and their leaveswere therefore held more upright.  相似文献

Numbers of total, metabolically active, dormant or dead axillarybuds, and growth characteristics were determined before andafter controlled burnings in Stipa tenuis Phil., a native foragegrass of the Caldén District in central Argentina. One-hectareplots were burned on 25 Mar. (Burn 1) or 4 Apr. 1991 (Burn 2),or remained unburned (control). Bud metabolic activity was examinedusing the tetrazolium test and the vital stain Evans' blue. Before fire, more than 83% of the axillary buds on previous-seasonstems of S. tenuis were metabolically active in all treatments.After fire, previous-season stems that produced tiller in thecontrol and Burn 2 plots had more than 75% of the axillary budsalive, but those that did not produce them had more than 82%of their axillary buds dead in the burned areas. This high budmortality was associated with direct fire effects on the fateof buds; most dead buds showed visible signs of dehydration.Since more than 97% of the plant stem bases did not producetillers after fire, tiller number per plant was reduced (P <0·05) in the burned plots to fewer than 22% of valuesof controls. Plant mortality was 50% higher at the Burn 1 thanat the Burn 2 site probably because the first site had a 43%lower soil moisture content (P < 0·05). At the endof the growing season, however, a different set of S. tenuisplants at both burned sites had a similar tiller number anddry weight to controls. The responses of Pimis roxburghii (chir pine), an early successionalspecies, andQuercus leucotrichophora(banj oak), a late successionalspecies were compared in terms of seed germination and seedlinggrowth. Seed germination was observed on single-factor gradientsof temperature, water stress, seed desiccation and light, andseedling growth on gradients of shade and soil moisture. Thesuppression of germination caused by continuous dark and far-redwas greater in Pinus than in Quercus. Pinus seed germinationshowed wider response breadth on gradients of water stress andseed desiccation, and narrower response breadth on the gradientof light quality, compared withQuercus. In terms of seedlinggrowth, the response breadth of Pinus was wider on the gradientof soil moisture and narrower on the gradient of shade comparedwith Quercus. Under higher soil moisture stress, the seedlingsof both species attained similar heights, butQuercus seedlingsachieved higher dry weights, a higher root: shoot ratio andlower leaf weight ratio than Pinus.  相似文献

A theoretical model is derived from simple postulates to describethe rates of growth and mortality of plants in populations ofdifferent densities. The growth rate is described by a modificationof the logistic growth differential equation in which the increasein weight of an individual plant depends on its area, si ratherthan on its weight. The effective area for growth of a plantis reduced by an empirical function, f(si) with two terms: oneterm expresses the constraint imposed upon the increasing totalarea of plants by the limited physical area of the plot; theother term allows for a competitive advantage or disadvantagefor plants of varying sizes. Depending on the value of the parametercontrolling the relative competitive advantage term, intrinsicvariability between plants can be amplified or suppressed. Anindividual plant dies if the f(si) results in a negative growthrate for that plant. Summary The influence of different depths of submergence (6±1 and 3±1 cm) and moisture tensions (0, 20, 60, 350, 500 and 1000 millibar) of lateritic sandy loam soil on root porosity and growth parameters of rice, variety IR8 was studied at two different growth phases under controlled greenhouse conditions. Best rice growth occurred at 3±1 cm submergence and it significantly reduced with the increase of soil moisture tension. Unlike other growth parameters, root length increased as the soil moisture tension was raised. The development of pore spaces in rice roots decreased significantly with the increase in soil moisture tension. However, higher root porosity was observed under greater depths of submergence. Irrespective of soil water condition, the number and dry weight of the root system showed significant positive correlation with root porosity. Oxygen diffusion rate in soil, which increased with the increasing moisture tension, was significantly and inversely related with the porosity of rice root. Seedlings of two Nigerian varieties of cowpea (IT82D and IT84E716)were grown together from seeds on loamy soil for 8 weeks intwo identical sloping moisture gradient boxes established outdoorsduring the dry season. Gradients of 13 cm to 79 cm depth towater table were maintained. For all growth characters determined,differences between the two varieties did not differ statisticallythough variety IT84E716 showed marginal improvement over varietyIT82D. Depth to water table had significant effects on all growthcharacteristics determined except for number of lateral shoots.No significant depth to water table x variety interactions wererecorded for any characters examined. Nodules and nodulatedroots showed maximum development in the wettest soils wherethey were relatively thick and large. The main pattern of growththat emerged was limited growth in very wet soil, maximum growthin wet soil and increasingly limited growth as the soil becamedrier. The experiment supported the hypothesis that depth towater table may provide a major edaphic control of cowpea unlessthere is frequent rainfall or irrigation. Shoot Growth and Mortality Patterns of Urtica dioica, a Clonal Forb   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The growth and mortality patterns of the clonal forb Urticadioica were investigated at the level of the individual shootin two growing seasons, 1991 and 1992, in a natural stand. Shootheight and diameter at ground level of each shoot tagged inspring were measured repeatedly five times during the growingseason. Dry weights of these repeatedly measured shoots wereestimated using an allometric relationship between dry weight,height and diameter of harvested shoots. A large decrease inshoot density occurred with stand development from the beginningof the growing season in both the years: (1) shoot survivalrate was about 30% at the end of the growing season; (2) shootmortality rate per 10 x 10 cm subplot between censuses was positivelydependent on shoot density per subplot; (3) the mortality rateof individual shoots was negatively dependent on shoot size(height, diameter and weight) at each growing stage, suggestingone-sided competition between living and dying shoots; (4) shootsize (height, diameter and weight) variability in terms of thecoefficient of variation and skewness decreased in accordancewith shoot mortality. Symmetric competition between living shootswas detected by regression analysis based on a model for individualshoot growth considering the degree of competitive asymmetry.However, the competitive effect on individual shoot growth wasvery small (nearly absent). The mortality pattern of Urticadioica indicates that shoot self-thinning occurred from theearly growing stage as in non-clonal crowded monospecific stands,and contrasts with many clonal plants where shoot self-thinningrarely occurs or, if any, is confined only to a short periodof the later growing stage. The pattern of growth and competitionbetween living shoots of Urtica dioica contrasts with non-clonalcrowded plants undergoing intense competition (usually asymmetric)between individuals, but is a common feature of many clonalplants where shoot competition is supposed to be reduced by'physiological integration' between shoots. These form a newpattern not reported yet for clonal plants. It is pointed outthat clonal plants show a wider spectrum of the growth, competitionand mortality patterns of shoots than non-clonals. Summary Studies on the tolerance ofAeschynomene americana L. to periods of flooding or soil moisture deficit were conducted in an attempt to elucidate nitrogen fixation as affected by soil moisture. Nitrogenase activity was not reduced significantly in pot-grown Aeschynomene plants subjected to flooding in greenhouse conditions. After 20 days of withholding water from the soil, nitrogenase activities of the drought-stressed plants were much lower than those of either the well-watered or flooded plants. Leaf water potentials were similar in flooded and control plants; however, the droughted plants had leaf water potentials that were 4 bars lower than those of the control plants. Aeschynomene plants were tolerant to long-term periods of flooding, but exhibited a reduction in nitrogenase activity and leaf water status when subjected to soil moisture deficits.  相似文献

The development of an axillary bud of white clover to form abranch depends on (1) the bud being viable, vegetative and non-dormant,and (2) suitable conditions for outgrowth of the bud. Foragingtheory emphasises the second of these requirements. Glasshousestudies with white clover rarely result in a loss of bud viability.In contrast, in field populations over 50% of the buds reachingthe stage of maturity when branching can occur are not in aviable, vegetative, non-dormant condition. We examined whethernon-viability could be induced in a glasshouse experiment byapplying treatments in a factorial design. The factors were:defoliation, phosphorus supply, soil moisture status, simulatedtreading and grass competition. In addition, we measured theeffects of the treatments on the outgrowth of viable buds inorder to assess whether the same factors were determining viabilityand outgrowth. Defoliation significantly reduced bud viability(by 44%) but no other factors, either singly or in combination,had a significant effect. A greater variety of factors and combinationsof factors influenced bud outgrowth; these were defoliation,phosphorus status and interactions involving phosphorus andgrass; defoliation, phosphorus and soil moisture; and soil moisture,grass and treading. For white clover it is relevant to includethe state of the axillary meristem in any model of foraging. The relative importance and interactive effects of nutrientsupply, soil moisture content and sand burial on the development,physiology, biomass allocation and fitness ofCakile edentulawere examined under controlled greenhouse conditions. Planttraits were more frequently affected by nutrient supply thanby soil moisture content or sand burial. Measurements on mostplant traits also varied depending on the two or three way interactionsamong the three environmental factors. Plants partially buriedby sand had higher leaf chlorophyll concentration than thoseunburied at the early stages of development, especially underlow soil moisture content. High nutrient supply tended to lowerthe leaf chlorophyll concentration of mature plants, and thiseffect was more pronounced under high as compared to low soilmoisture content. High nutrient supply enhanced the photosyntheticcapacity of plants when they were water stressed. With adequatesoil moisture, high nutrient supply increased/decreased thephotosynthetic capacity of plants with/without previous experienceof water stress. High nutrient supply increased the biomassallocation to the root system of plants, especially at low soilmoisture content. 1. In order to investigate the factors influencing the establishment of seedlings in permanent grassland, the influence of soil moisture and nitrogen fertilization on competition between established plants of Lolium perenne and seedlings of Phleum pratense or Trifolium pratense was studied in two experiments under greenhouse conditions using the 'split-box'-technique.
2. There was no difference in the production of plant dry matter of P. pratense or T. pratense between 30% volumetric soil water content (−0·005 MPa) and 22% (−0·04 MPa), but 15% soil moisture (−0·33 MPa) reduced plant growth. L. perenne yields were linearly reduced by reduced soil moisture content.
3. Shoot competition from L. perenne reduced the plant dry matter yield of P. pratense and T. pratense more than did root competition in these experiments. When shoot competition was present, differences between moisture contents were not detected, indicating that light was probably the limiting resource under such conditions. No significant interaction between root competition and soil moisture was observed for plant weight.
4. Root competition was not prevented even though sufficient water and nitrogen were supplied. This indicated either that some other growth factor was limiting or the plants competed for resources at the root hair level even though sufficient resources were supplied at the pot or field scale. Therefore, in the situation of direct drilling of species during grassland renovation, it may be difficult to alleviate competition by adequate provision of water and nitrogen.  相似文献
