Colour pattern characteristics and gonad histology were used to detect sexual dichromatisms in yellowfin grouper Mycteroperca venenosa and tiger grouper Mycteroperca tigris from the Campeche Bank, Mexico. Specimens were obtained from commercial catches between March and May during 2002 and 2004. All specimens were examined dead. Ninety-seven per cent of males had different sex-associated colour patterns. Male yellowfin grouper displayed a bright yellow blotch on both sides of the lower jaw while females retained a reddish lower jaw. Male tiger grouper had uniform dark pectoral fins while females had bright orange pectoral fins. In situ observations of live fishes at fishing sites showed the lower jaw and pectoral fin colourations to be clearly visible underwater at a depth of 35 m. All males of both species and most females (80% yellowfin grouper and 98% tiger grouper) were sexually active and probably caught during their spawning season. This suggests that distinct colourations observed for male M. venenosa and M. tigris may be seasonal displays associated with spawning. Both the lower jaw and pectoral fin colourations were still visible in dead fishes after several days on ice. Differences observed for ray length of exserted vertical fins in tiger grouper specimens were probably not a sex-associated characteristic.  相似文献

In this study, sex ratio, spawning season, fork length (L(F)) at maturity (L(F50)), batch fecundity and spawning frequency were characterized for the continental population of Ocyurus chrysurus from the Campeche Bank, in the southern Gulf of Mexico. A total of 1657 specimens were collected from February 2008 to January 2009. The overall sex ratio (male:female) and sex ratios by size-class showed no significant differences from an expected 1:1 ratio. The Campeche Bank population did not conform to the reproductive seasonality pattern characteristic of a continental population. A protracted spawning season that extended from January to September with peaks occurring mainly between April and May and additionally in September was observed. The population conformed, however, to the sexual maturity pattern observed for populations and species associated with a continental margin. Fish of both sexes reached the onset of sexual maturity at a similar and small L(F) of c. 14 cm, and L(F50) (L(F) at which 50% of females and males become mature) was 21·3 and 19·4 cm. Asynchronous-type ovarian development was observed for this species and batch fecundity estimates ranged from 14,102 to 164,756 oocytes (mean ±S.D. = 43,852 ± 32,684 oocytes). The overall spawning frequency estimate was once every 8·3 days or 26 times during the 9 month spawning season.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of female bigeye tuna Thunnus obesus was assessed by examining 888 fish (ranging from 84·9 to 174·4 cm fork length, LF) caught by Taiwanese offshore longliners in the western Pacific Ocean from November 1997 to November 1998 and November to December 1999 and 258 gonad samples from these fish. The overall sex ratio of the catch during the sampling differed significantly from 0·5, but males were predominant in sizes >140 cm LF. Reproductive activity (assessed by histology), a gonado‐somatic index, and the size‐frequency distributions of whole oocytes indicated that spawning occurred throughout the year and the major spawning season appeared to be from February to September. The estimated sizes at 50% maturity (LF50) of females was 102·85 cm (95% c.i .: 90·79–110·21 cm) and the smallest mature female was 99·7 cm LF. They are multiple spawners and oocytes develop asynchronously. The proportion of mature (0·63) and reproductively active (0·70) females with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles indicated that they spawn almost daily. Batch fecundity for 15 females with the most advanced oocytes (>730 µm) ranged from 0·84 to 8·56 million eggs (mean ± s.d . = 3·06 ± 2·09). The relationships between batch fecundity (FB, in millions of eggs) and LF (cm) and round mass (MR, kg) were (r2 = 0·84) and (r2 = 0·80), respectively. The parameters estimated in this study are key information for stock assessments of T. obesus in the western Pacific Ocean and will contribute to the conservation and sustainable yield of this species.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Epinephelus coioides was determined from the examination of 1455 individuals collected between July 2005 and June 2007 in the southern Arabian Gulf. Histological preparations of gonads indicated that males were either derived from a juvenile phase or the transition of postspawning females, confirming a diandric protogynous sexual pattern. The spawning season was well defined, occurring once a year during April and early May. Peaks in spawning occurred after the full and new moons and was completed within a single lunar cycle. The presence of mature males over the entire size and age range and the absence of inactive mature females during the spawning season suggested that the population was not constrained by sperm limitation. While specimens undergoing sexual transition were only observed in size and age ranges of 335–685 mm total length ( L T) and 5–6 years, patterns in the proportion of males in size and age classes suggested that sex change occurred at a relatively constant rate after female maturation up to the maximum size (1002 mm L T) and age (11 years). Relationships between reproductive output and capacity with size and age indicated that conventional regulations that equate the mean size at first capture to sexual maturation are unsuitable for the management of E. coioides . The maximum age, small size and young age at sexual maturation ( L min= 320 mm L T, 2 years, for females and 242 mm L T, 1 year, for males) conflict with the general pattern for large epinepheline groupers and may be a direct result of the intensive demersal fishery in the southern Arabian Gulf.  相似文献

The study provides new information on the reproductive biology of Hypselobarbus thomassi (Day, 1874) an endemic cyprinid fish in the Western Ghats–a biodiversity hotspot of India. A total of 384 specimens (males = 244 and females = 140) were collected monthly from April 2009 to March 2011 from Kallada River of Southern part of Western Ghats, India. Monthly sex ratio indicated that males predominated in the fishery, and an overall sex ratio was significantly different from the expected value of 1:1 (male:female = 1:0.57, x2 = 28.17, p < .01). Based on the monthly analysis of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the proportion of mature individuals, the spawning season of H. thomassi occurred between May to October with a peak in June to August. The length at first maturity (L50) recorded was 290 mm TL in males and 330 mm TL in females. The absolute fecundity ranged between 305 (234 mm TL) to 1,089 (414 mm TL) and relative fecundity oscillated between 77.3–220.69 oocytes/g of fish. The fecundity established a linear relationship with total length, body weight and ovary weight. The findings of this study would be very effective to impose sustainable conservation plan for this threatened species in Kallada River and other Western Ghats river systems.  相似文献

Using 11 microsatellite markers, genetic analyses of three successive year-classes of gag Mycteroperca microlepis juveniles across the north-eastern Gulf of Mexico revealed a lack of spatial structure and very little temporal variation between year-classes. These results are consistent with long-term effective population sizes on the order of 30 000 adults. The importance of reproductive-style and sex-ratio variation is discussed as an important influence on long-term effective sizes.  相似文献

Length and mass data for 1260 (536 females, 683 males, 41 sex unknown) striped marlin Kajikia audax were collected at the fish markets of Tungkang, Singkang and Nanfangao from July 2004 to September 2010. Of these samples, 534 gonads (236 females and 298 males) ranging from 95 to 206 cm in eye‐to‐fork length (L EF ) and 8 to 88 kg in round mass (M R), were collected. Chi‐square tests indicated sex ratios were homogeneous among months in 2004 and 2006–2008, but not in 2005, 2009 and 2010; and there were significant differences in sex ratio by size. The overall sex ratio (R S ) differed significantly from the expected 0·5. Kajikia audax are sexually dimorphic and the proportions of females increased with size between 140 and 210 cm L EF . Reproductive activity was assessed using a gonado‐somatic index (I G ), external appearance of the gonads and histological examination and results indicated that the spawning season occurred from April to August with a peak in June to July. Based on histological observations and the distribution of oocyte diameters, K. audax are multiple spawners and their oocytes develop asynchronously. The estimated length‐at‐50% maturity (L EF50 ) was c . 181 cm (c . 4·8 years of age) for females. The proportion of reproductively active females in the spawning season with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles (0·27) indicated that they spawned every 3·7 days on average. The hydrated oocyte method estimated mean ± S.D. batch fecundity (F B ) to be 4·4 ± 2·02 million eggs; average relative fecundity was 53·6 ± 13·9 oocytes g?1 M R; and the average annual fecundity was 181·3 ± 48·3 million eggs. The parameters estimated in this study are key information for stock assessments of K. audax in the north‐western and central Pacific and will contribute to the conservation, management and sustainable yield of this species.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the spangled emperor Lethrinus nebulosus in the southern Arabian Gulf was determined from the examination of 781 individuals collected between September 2008 and August 2009. There was no histological evidence of adult sex change, and sex ratios did not differ significantly from unity across all size and age classes. Testes had an ovarian structure and a remnant lumen which was not used for sperm transport; furthermore, residual oocytes were observed in the testes of some immature, resting and developing males. A dramatic change in the sex ratio of the smallest and youngest size and age classes suggested that juvenile female to male sex change occurred between 21·0 cm fork length (L(F)) and 24·0 cm L(F) at 1 year of age. The combination of histological evidence with the sexual composition of the size and age structures suggests a non-functional protogynous hermaphroditic sexual pattern, which is analogous to functional gonochorism. The spawning season was well defined, occurring once a year during March, April and early May. Peaks in spawning occurred after full moons, there was a cessation in spawning activity after new moons and spawning was completed within three lunar cycles. The distribution of males over the entire size and age ranges and the absence of inactive mature females during the spawning season suggested that the population was not constrained by sperm limitation. Size-specific and age-specific reproductive potential indicated that conventional regulations that equate the mean size at first capture to sexual maturation are unsuitable for the management of L. nebulosus. The maximum recorded age (11 years), small mean size and young age at sexual maturation (L(m50) = 26·7 cm L(F), 2·1 years, for females and 19·4 cm L(F), 0·5 years, for males) may be a direct result of intensive demersal fishing in the southern Arabian Gulf.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the painted sweetlips Diagramma pictum was determined from 487 individuals collected between January and December 2010 in the southern Arabian Gulf. There was no evidence of sex change and the combination of histological results with the sex composition of the size and age structures indicated a gonochoristic sexual pattern. There were peaks in gonado-somatic indices for females in March and October with spawning occurring during two seasons (April to May and November). The mean size and age at sexual maturity (L(m50) and A(m50) ) were 35·7 cm fork length (L(F) ) and 2·9 years for females and 26·7 cm L(F) and 0·5 years for males. The maximum recorded age (11 years) and small mean size and young age at sexual maturity for males may be a direct result of intensive demersal fishing in the southern Arabian Gulf. There was an exponential increase in the cumulative reproductive potential with size and a linear increase with age for both sexes. The mean L(F) (L(c50) ) at which D. pictum became vulnerable to capture was 33·3 cm, which corresponded to only 3 and 7% of the cumulative reproductive potential of males and females, respectively. Size-specific and age-specific reproductive potential indicated that conventional regulations that equate the mean size at first capture to sexual maturation are unsuitable for the management of D. pictum.  相似文献

This study provided new knowledge on reproductive traits of the unique mudskipper Periophthalmodon septemradiatus that is also a potential aquarium pet. Fish specimens were obtained by using fishing rods at the muddy flat in tributaries of the Hau River from August 2017 to July 2018. Data analysis of a collection of 1,504 individuals (930 males and 674 females) showed that the sex ratio of this species was significantly different from the ratio 1:1. As mature gonads were found monthly during the study period, it is suggested that P. septemradiatus is an iteroparous species releasing eggs for a year-round cycle. The fish length at first mature (Lm) showed an increase from estuary to upstream areas. Male P. septemradiatus had higher Lm values than that of females. Likely, the batch fecundity increased from estuary region (5,916 ± 312 SEM eggs) towards upstream area (11,451 ± 953 SEM eggs). The fish total length and weight values had strong positive relationships with batch fecundity, as shown by high determination values (r2), suggesting that batch fecundity increased with fish size. This study provided more information on reproductive biology of P. septemradiatus, which can be utilized for fish population conservation and artificial reproductive study.  相似文献

The life history of the white sea bream Diplodus sargus in the Azores showed a pattern consistent with digynic hermaphroditism achieving sexual maturity during the second year of life, at 16·7 cm L T. Spawning occurred from March to June at temperatures between 15 and 17° C and the onset and duration of spawning season in the sea bream appeared to be influenced by sea water temperatures. As latitude decreased, both in the northern and southern hemispheres, the spawning season of D. sargus populations started earlier and extended longer, highlighting the potential importance of temperature to the onset and duration of reproduction in this species. Settlement took place from late May to July, and settlers remained in the nursery area for c . 2·5 months. Emigration from the nursery area to join shoals of juveniles occurred from late July to September.  相似文献

The 'smoothed'(4253e HT smoother) 6 year time series with a monthly periodicity of catches (where the increases of the catches reflect the spawning migration) of Mugil cephalus and Mugil curema , were correlated (Pearson correlation index) against the 'smoothed' data on rainfall, water temperature, daylight and tide monthly averages. Water temperature and M. curema spawning migrations had a negative correlation ( r  = −0·77), while tide monthly averages and M. cephalus spawning migrations were positively correlated ( r  = 0·84). The two environmental variables that showed highly significant correlations were water temperature and daylight ( r  = 0·85, P  < 0·05). Meteorological tides were used as a reflection of the effect of the north winds from the Gulf of Mexico which produce an average tide rise from September to November. The relationship of these variables with spawning migrations is discussed, and it is suggested, in particular, that meteorological tides, as a reflection of the north winds, are the trigger (zeitgebers) for M. cephalus spawning in the ocean.  相似文献

The present study is a report of data of planktonic dinoflagellates which includes a list of 252 species, with 10 985 entries in the southern Gulf of Mexico along with information concerning their occurrence. Material for the present study consists of water and net samples obtained during 11 cruises collected at 608 sites between June 1979 and December 2002. Ceratium (47 spp.), Protoperidinium (28 spp.), Dinophysis (26 spp.), Oxytoxum (19 spp.) and Prorocentrum (15 spp.) were the most diverse genera. The most common species found are Ceratium breve, Ceratium contortum, Ceratium furca, Ceratium furca var. eugranum, Ceratium fusus. Ceratium fusus var. seta, Ceratium kofoidii, Ceratium macroceros, Ceratium massiliense, Ceratium pentagonum, Ceratium teres, Ceratium trichoceros, Ceratium tripos, Dinophysis caudata, Ornithocercus magnificus, Podolampas palmipes, Prorocentrum com‐pressum, Prorocentrum gracile, Prorocentrum micans, Protoperidinium divergens and Pyrophacus steinii. Thirteen species are potential toxin producers, among which Karenia brevis was responsible for fish mass mortalities. Other toxic species such as Amphidinium carterae, Dinophysis acuta, Dinophysis caudata, Dinophysis fortii, Dinophysis mitra, Dinophysis rotundata, Dinophysis tripos, Prorocentrum mexicanum, Prorocentrum micans and Prorocentrum minimum were present mostly in net samples. The non‐toxic species Ceratium furca, Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense, Scripp‐siella trochoidea and Gonyaulax polygram ma were found in blooms during the summer. Qualitative data show that dinoflagellates occurred mostly during July and August, associated with hydrographic conditions. A checklist of the species and their occurrence are given.  相似文献

Heteroenopleus enigmaticus gen. nov., sp. nov. isdescribed from the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Itoccurs both in the nearshore Gulf and in high salinityestuarine areas. Body wall musculature conforms tothe general plan of heteronemerteans, i.e. outerlongitudinal, middle circular and inner longitudinalmuscle layers. The head bears a pair of horizontallateral slits, characteristic of the lineids. Theproboscis musculature is of the heteronemerteanpalaeotype with two muscle layers, outer circularand inner longitudinal. Other morphologicalcharacters agree with those of heteronemerteans withone major exception: the proboscis is armed with tworows of structures, herein named parastylets. Thisarmature has no morphological similarity to either themicrovillar proboscideal spines of heteronemerteans orto the stylets of mono- or polystiliferans. A newsubfamily Heteroenopleinae is erected to contain theapomorphic character of an armed proboscis.  相似文献

Maturation, minimum length at first maturity, spawning season, spawning periodicity, sex-ratio and absolute fecundity of Mystus vittatus, a common bagrid catfish, have been investigated. The observations show that spawning takes place during September and October. Each individual spawns only once in the season as evidenced by the study of the intraovarian ova. Females dominate the catches, and absolute fecundity (F) can be expressed by% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0dh9WrFfpC0xh9vqqj-hEeeu0xXdbba9frFj0-OqFf% ea0dXdd9vqaq-JfrVkFHe9pgea0dXdar-Jb9hs0dXdbPYxe9vr0-vr% 0-vqpWqaaeaabaGaaiaacaqabeaadaqaaqaaaOabaeqabaGaciiBai% aac+gacaGGNbGaaeiiaiaabAeacaqGGaGaaeypaiaabccacaqGTaGa% ae4maiaab6cacaqGYaGaaeyoaiaabkdacaqGGaGaae4kaiaabccaca% qG0aGaaeOlaiaabgdacaqG3aGaaeymaiaabgdacaqGGaGaaeiBaiaa% b+gacaqGNbGaaeiiaiaabYeaaeaacaqGHbGaaeOBaiaabsgacaqGGa% GaaeOraiaabccacaqG9aGaaeiiaiaab2cacaqGXaGaaeOlaiaabwda% caqG0aGaaeinaiaabwdacaqGGaGaae4kaiaabccacaqGWaGaaeOlai% aabMdacaqG0aGaae4naiaabkdacaqGGaGaae4vaaaaaa!5FCC!\[\begin{gathered} \log {\text{ F = - 3}}{\text{.292 + 4}}{\text{.1711 log L}} \hfill \\ {\text{and F = - 1}}{\text{.5445 + 0}}{\text{.9472 W}} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} \]  相似文献

We examined the relationship between the longitude of peak arrival of trans-Gulf migrants on the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico in spring and wind trajectories over the Gulf at three different altitudes (500, 1,500, and 2,500 m above ground level). We used data from 10 WSR-88D radars (weather surveillance radar-1988-Doppler) from Brownsville, Texas, to Key West, Florida, to record the time and longitude of peak arrival on the northern Gulf coast for four spring migrations (2001–2004). We used the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration Air Resources Laboratory HYSPLIT transport and dispersion model at the READY Web site to generate backward, 24-h atmospheric trajectories based on archived atmospheric data for each trans-Gulf flight. The trajectories began at the geographic location where radar indicated the greatest concentrations of arriving migrants. Although the longitude of peak arrival varied, peak densities of most trans-Gulf migrants arrived on the northern coast near longitude 95°W. Regression analyses showed that the relationship between the longitude of peak trans-Gulf arrival and the direction of atmospheric trajectory was significant but weak at the 500-m level, where few migrants occurred, and was insignificant for the 1,500- and 2,500-m altitudes, where migrant densities were greater. We conclude that winds aloft over the Gulf have little influence on the longitude of peak trans-Gulf arrival on the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and we speculate that the arrival pattern may reflect the trans-Gulf migration pathways that evolved during the Last Glacial Maximum.  相似文献

Behaviour of a sharptail mola in the Gulf of Mexico   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A sharptail mola Masturus lanceolatus was tagged and released with a pop-up satellite archival tag in the Gulf of Mexico and tracked for 61 days. The fish travelled a horizontal distance of 594 km while generally staying in water <200 m depth and >20° C. Occasionally the sharptail mola dived to depths >700 m and experienced water colder than 6° C.  相似文献

Quantifying the timing and intensity of migratory movements is imperative for understanding impacts of changing landscapes and climates on migratory bird populations. Billions of birds migrate in the Western Hemisphere, but accurately estimating the population size of one migratory species, let alone hundreds, presents numerous obstacles. Here, we quantify the timing, intensity, and distribution of bird migration through one of the largest migration corridors in the Western Hemisphere, the Gulf of Mexico (the Gulf). We further assess whether there have been changes in migration timing or intensity through the Gulf. To achieve this, we integrate citizen science (eBird) observations with 21 years of weather surveillance radar data (1995–2015). We predicted no change in migration timing and a decline in migration intensity across the time series. We estimate that an average of 2.1 billion birds pass through this region each spring en route to Nearctic breeding grounds. Annually, half of these individuals pass through the region in just 18 days, between April 19 and May 7. The western region of the Gulf showed a mean rate of passage 5.4 times higher than the central and eastern regions. We did not detect an overall change in the annual numbers of migrants (2007–2015) or the annual timing of peak migration (1995–2015). However, we found that the earliest seasonal movements through the region occurred significantly earlier over time (1.6 days decade?1). Additionally, body mass and migration distance explained the magnitude of phenological changes, with the most rapid advances occurring with an assemblage of larger‐bodied shorter‐distance migrants. Our results provide baseline information that can be used to advance our understanding of the developing implications of climate change, urbanization, and energy development for migratory bird populations in North America.  相似文献

This study described the nutrient dynamics in a tropical coastal lagoon that is affected by the infiltration of cold nutrient-rich groundwater. The spatial and time variation of physicochemical characteristics (e.g., temperature, salinity, oxygen) and nutrients (e.g., nitrate, ammonium, soluble reactive silicate, soluble reactive phosphorus) are depicted and show changes with respect to weather conditions. The lagoon shows a permanent salinity gradient from the inner zone (14–19). Nitrate and soluble reactive silicate (SRSi) are inversely correlated with salinity. Soluble phosphorus (SRP) shows highest levels in the inner zone during winter months (>9 µM). Ammonium shows two high peaks, one in the rainy season (15 µM) and the other during winter (11 µM). The intensity and quality of rainfall influences the nitrate and SRSi inputs, while biological activity influences the SRP and ammonium levels.  相似文献

We report on the reproductive biology of southwestern Atlantic wreckfish. Females mature first at 77.9cm total length (TL) (10.4 years) and all are mature by 90cm TL (15.2 years). Males mature first at 74.9cm (9 years) and all are mature by 80cm TL (10.9 years). The wreckfish is a gonochoristic multiple spawner and the gonadal cycle is synchronized at the population level. Spawning occurs from late July to early October along the continental slope (<300m). Ovarian fecundity varies from 3 to 11.9 million (135–311 oocytes×g–1) and increases exponentially with length. Spawning at western boundary current systems, maintained by homing of adults, is a basic requirement for self-sustaining populations of this species.  相似文献
