Objective:

Despite the extended overnight fast, paradoxically, people are typically not ravenous in the morning and breakfast is typically the smallest meal of the day. We assessed whether this paradox could be explained by an endogenous circadian influence on appetite with a morning trough, while controlling for sleep/wake and fasting/feeding effects.

Design and Methods:

Twelve healthy non‐obese adults (six males; age, 20‐42 years) were studied throughout a 13‐day laboratory protocol that balanced all behaviors, including eucaloric meals and sleep periods, evenly across the endogenous circadian cycle. Participants rated their appetite and food preferences by visual analog scales.

Results:

There was a large endogenous circadian rhythm in hunger, with the trough in the biological morning (8 AM) and peak in the biological evening (8 PM; peak‐to‐trough amplitude = 17%; P = 0.004). Similarly‐phased significant endogenous circadian rhythms were present in appetites for sweet, salty and starchy foods, fruits, meats/poultry, food overall, and for estimates of how much food participants could eat (amplitudes 14‐25%; all P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

In people who sleep at night, the intrinsic circadian evening peak in appetite may promote larger meals before the fasting period necessitated by sleep, whereas the circadian morning trough would theoretically facilitate the extended overnight fast. Furthermore, the circadian decline in hunger across the night would theoretically counteract the fasting‐induced hunger increase that could otherwise disrupt sleep.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A post-hoc analysis comparing morning and evening persons with insomnia on sleep and mental health characteristics was conducted in order to investigate whether an Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (ICBTi) was effective both for morning and evening persons. Adult patients (N = 178, mean age = 44.8, 67% females) with insomnia were randomized to either ICBTi (N = 92; morning persons = 41; evening persons = 51) or a web-based patient education condition (N = 86; morning persons = 44; evening persons = 42). All patients were assessed with sleep diaries, the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Bergen Insomnia Scale (BIS), the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep Scale (DBAS-16), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFQ). Patients were characterized as morning or evening persons based on a median split on the Horne-Östberg Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire. Short and long-term effects of treatment were examined with mixed-model repeated-measures analyses. Morning and evening persons did not differ in terms of age, gender or educational status. At baseline, morning persons had more wake time after sleep onset (d= 0.54, p < .001) and more early morning awakening (d= 0.38, p < .05) compared to evening persons, while evening persons reported longer sleep onset latency (d= 0.60, p < .001), more time in bed (d= 0.56, p < .001), longer total sleep time (d= 0.45, p < .01), more fatigue (d= 0.31, p < .05) and more dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep (d= 0.47, p < .01). Despite these differences at baseline, both morning and evening persons receiving ICBTi benefitted more across most measures compared to morning and evening persons who received patient education. For morning persons in the ICBTi group, ISI scores were reduced from 17.3 at baseline to 8.8 (dpre-post = 2.48, p < .001) at post-assessment, and to 10.0 at 18-month follow up (dpre-post18m = 2.13, p < .001). Comparable results were found for evening persons in the ICBTi group, with a reduction in ISI scores from 17.4 at baseline to 8.6 (dpre-post = 2.24, p < .001) at post-assessment, and to 8.7 at 18-month follow up (dpre-post18m = 2.19, p < .001). Similar results were found on the BIS, DBAS, HADS, CFQ and sleep diary data. Despite different insomnia symptomatology between the two groups, the current study suggests that ICBTi is effective across scores on the morningness-eveningness dimension. Disrupted circadian rhythms are associated with obesity and metabolic alterations, but little is known about the participation of peripheral circadian clock machinery in these processes. The aim of the present study was to analyze RNA expression of clock genes in subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissues of male and female subjects in AM (morning) and PM (afternoon) periods, and its interactions with body mass index (BMI). Ninety-one subjects (41?±?11 yrs of age) presenting a wide range of BMI (21.4 to 48.6?kg/m2) were included. SAT and VAT biopsies were obtained from patients undergoing abdominal surgeries. Clock genes expressions were evaluated by qRT-PCR. The only clock gene that showed higher expression (p?<?.0001) in SAT in comparison to VAT was PER1 of female (372%) and male (326%) subjects. Different patterns of expression between the AM and PM periods were observed, in particular REV-ERBα, which was reduced (p?<?.05) at the PM period in SAT and VAT of both women and men (women: ~53% lower; men: ~78% lower), whereas CLOCK expression was not altered. Relationships between clock genes were different in SAT vs. VAT. BMI was negatively correlated with SATPER1 (r?=??.549; p?=?.001) and SATPER2 (r?=??.613; p?=?.0001) and positively with VATCLOCK (r?=?.541; p?=?.001) and VATBMAL1 (r?=?.468; p?=?.007) only in women. These data suggest that the circadian clock machinery of adipose tissue depots differs between female and male subjects, with a sex-specific effect observed for some genes. The adequate time to perform physical activity (PA) to maintain optimal circadian system health has not been defined. We studied the influence of morning and evening PA on circadian rhythmicity in 16 women with wrist temperature (WT). Participants performed controlled PA (45?min continuous-running) during 7 days in the morning (MPA) and evening (EPA) and results were compared with a no-exercise-week (C). EPA was characterized by a lower amplitude (evening: 0.028?±?0.01?°C versus control: 0.038?±?0.016?°C; p?<?0.05) less pronounced second-harmonic (power) (evening: 0.41?±?0.47 versus morning: 1.04?±?0.59); and achrophase delay (evening: 06:35?±?02:14?h versus morning: 04:51?±?01:11?h; p?<?0.05) as compared to MPA and C. Objective:

Serum cortisol concentrations fluctuate in a circadian fashion, and glucocorticoids exert strong effects on adipose tissue and induce obesity through the glucocorticoid receptor.

Design and Methods:

To examine the impact of physiologic levels of circulating cortisol on subcutaneous adipose tissue, 25 overweight and obese subjects were employed, and their serum levels of morning (AM) and evening (PM) cortisol, AM/PM cortisol ratios, and 24‐h urinary‐free cortisol (UFC) were compared with their clinical parameters, serum cytokine levels, and mRNA expression of 93 receptor action‐regulating and 93 glucocorticoid‐responsive genes in abdominal subcutaneous fat.

Results and Conclusions:

AM cortisol levels did not correlate with mRNA expression of the all genes examined, whereas PM cortisol levels, AM/PM cortisol ratios, and 24‐h UFC were associated with distinct sets of these genes. Body mass index did not significantly correlate with the four cortisol parameters employed. These results suggest that physiologic levels of AM serum cortisol do not solely represent biological effects of circulating cortisol on the expression of glucocorticoid‐related genes in subcutaneous adipose tissue, whereas PM levels, amplitude, and net amounts of the diurnally fluctuating serum cortisol have distinct effects. Through the genes identified in this study, glucocorticoids appear to influence intermediary metabolism, energy balance, inflammation, and local circadian rythmicity in subcutaneous fat. Our results may also explain in part the development of metabolic abnormality and obesity in subjects under stress or patients with melancholic/atypical depression who demonstrate elevated levels of PM serum cortisol.  相似文献

High solar radiation has been recognised as a contributing factor to exertional heat-related illness in individuals exercising outdoors in the heat. Although solar radiation intensity has been known to have similar time-of-day variation as body temperature, the relationship between fluctuations in solar radiation associated with diurnal change in the angle of sunlight and thermoregulatory responses in individuals exercising outdoors in a hot environment remains largely unknown. The present study therefore investigated the time-of-day effects of variations in solar radiation associated with changing solar elevation angle on thermoregulatory responses during moderate-intensity outdoor exercise in the heat of summer. Eight healthy, high school baseball players, heat-acclimatised male volunteers completed a 3-h outdoor baseball trainings under the clear sky in the heat. The trainings were commenced at 0900 h in AM trial and at 1600 h in PM trial each on a separate day. Solar radiation and solar elevation angle during exercise continued to increase in AM (672–1107 W/m2 and 44–69°) and decrease in PM (717–0 W/m2 and 34–0°) and were higher on AM than on PM (both < 0.001). Although ambient temperature (AM 32–36°C, PM 36–30°C) and wet-bulb globe temperature (AM 31–33°C, PM 34–27°C) also continued to increase in AM and decrease in PM, there were no differences between trials in these (both > 0.05). Tympanic temperature measured by an infrared tympanic thermometer and mean skin temperature were higher in AM than PM at 120 and 180 min (< 0.05). Skin temperature was higher in AM than PM at the upper arm and thigh at 120 min (< 0.05) and at the calf at 120 and 180 min (both < 0.05). Body heat gain from the sun was greater during exercise in AM than PM (< 0.0001), at 0–60 min in PM than AM (< 0.0001) and at 120–180 min in AM than PM (< 0.0001). Dry heat loss during exercise was greater at 0–60 min (< 0.0001), and lower at 60–120 min (< 0.05) and 120–180 min (< 0.0001) in AM than PM. Evaporative heat loss during exercise was greater in PM than AM at 120–180 min (< 0.0001). Total (dry + evaporation) heat loss at the skin was greater during exercise in PM than AM (< 0.0001), at 0–60 min in AM than PM (< 0.0001) and at 60–120 and 120–180 min in PM than AM (< 0.05 and 0.0001). Heart rate at 120–150 min was also higher in AM than PM (< 0.05). Neither perceived thermal sensation nor rating of perceived exertion was different between trials (both > 0.05). The current study demonstrates a greater thermoregulatory strain in the morning than in the afternoon resulting from a higher body temperature and heart rate in relation to an increase in environmental heat stress with rising solar radiation and solar elevation angle during moderate-intensity outdoor exercise in the heat. This response is associated with a lesser net heat loss at the skin and a greater body heat gain from the sun in the morning compared with the afternoon.  相似文献

This study was conducted by two trials to investigate effects of sequential feeding with low- and high-protein diets on growth traits and plasma metabolites in geese. In Trial I, the effect of sequential feeding under time-restricted feeding system was investigated. Seventy-two White Roman goslings were randomly allotted into either sequential feeding (S1) or control feeding (C1) group. All goslings were fed for 1 h at morning and at evening, respectively, from 2 to 8 weeks of age. S1 group was offered 13% CP diet at morning and 19% CP diet at evening. C1 group was offered the same diet (16% CP; mixed equally with the two diets mentioned above) at both morning and evening. Blood samples were hourly collected for 4 h after feeding at both morning and evening for the determination of the postprandial plasma levels of glucose, triacylglycerol and uric acid at the end of experiment. Results showed that BW, average daily gain (ADG), and daily feed intake (FI) were not different between groups, but the feed efficiency (FE) in S1 group was significantly higher than that in C1 group (P<0.05). The areas under curve (AUC) of plasma postprandial levels of glucose, triacylglycerol and uric acid were not affected by treatment, but the AUC of triacylglycerol and uric acid in morning were lower than those in evening (P<0.05). In Trial II, the effect of sequential feeding under ad libitum feeding system was investigated. Twenty-four goslings were randomly allotted into either sequential feeding (S2) or control feeding (C2) group. Diets were altered at 0600 and 1800 h, respectively, and geese were fed ad libitum from 4 to 8 weeks of age. S2 group was offered 14% CP diet at morning and 20% CP diet at evening. C2 group was supplied the same diet (mixed with the two diets according to the ratio of diets consumed by S2 group on the preceded day) at both morning and evening. Results showed that the ADG in S2 group was higher than those in C2 group (P<0.05). Summarized data from both trials showed that sequential feeding improves daily gain and FE in growing geese.  相似文献

Circadian rhythm has an influence on several physiological functions that contribute to athletic performance. We tested the hypothesis that circadian rhythm would affect blood pressure (BP) responses but not O(2) uptake (Vo(2)) kinetics during the transitions to moderate and heavy cycling exercises. Nine male athletes (peak Vo(2): 60.5 ± 3.2 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) performed multiple rides of two different cycling protocols involving sequences of 6-min bouts at moderate or heavy intensities interspersed by a 20-W baseline in the morning (7 AM) and evening (5 PM). Breath-by-breath Vo(2) and beat-by-beat BP estimated by finger cuff plethysmography were measured simultaneously throughout the protocols. Circadian rhythm did not affect Vo(2) onset kinetics determined from the phase II time constant (τ(2)) during either moderate or heavy exercise bouts with no prior priming exercise (τ(2) moderate exercise: morning 22.5 ± 4.6 s vs. evening 22.2 ± 4.6 s and τ(2) heavy exercise: morning 26.0 ± 2.7 s vs. evening 26.2 ± 2.6 s, P > 0.05). Priming exercise induced the same robust acceleration in Vo(2) kinetics during subsequent moderate and heavy exercise in the morning and evening. A novel finding was an overshoot in BP (estimated from finger cuff plethysmography) in the first minutes of each moderate and heavy exercise bout. After the initial overshoot, BP declined in association with increased skin blood flow between the third and sixth minute of the exercise bout. Priming exercise showed a greater effect in modulating the BP responses in the evening. These findings suggest that circadian rhythm interacts with priming exercise to lower BP during exercise after an initial overshoot with a greater influence in the evening associated with increased skin blood flow.  相似文献

Both testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) exhibit circadian rhythmicity being highest in the morning and lowest in the evening. T is a potent stimulator of protein synthesis and may possess anti-catabolic properties within skeletal muscle, and C affects protein turnover, thereby altering the balance between hormone-mediated anabolic and catabolic activity. Physiological reactions of these hormones and training adaptations may influence the post-exercise recovery phase by modulating anabolic and catabolic processes, therefore affecting metabolic equilibrium, and may lead to intensification of catabolic processes. We investigated the effect of the circadian system on the T and C response of weight-trained men to heavy resistance exercise. Thirteen young (21.8±2.2 yr) weight-trained men (12 months training experience) performed an eight-station heavy-resistance exercise protocol on two separate occasions (AM: 06:00 h and PM: 18:00 h), completing 3 sets of 8–10 repetitions at 75% of each subject's one-repetition maximum (1-RM). Blood samples were obtained prior to, during, and following the exercise bout, and serum total T and C concentrations were determined by competitive immunoassay technique. Performing the single bout of heavy-resistance exercise in the PM as compared to the AM positively altered the C and T/C ratio hormonal response. Pre-exercise C concentrations were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the PM session, which resulted in a lower peak value, and the accompanying increased T/C ratio suggested a reduced catabolic environment. These data demonstrate that the exercise-induced hormonal profile can be influenced by the circadian time structure toward a profile more favorable for anabolism, therefore optimizing skeletal muscle hypertrophic adaptations associated with resistance exercise.  相似文献

We examined the effects of low-dose oral risperidone (RIS) on nocturnal sleep in healthy participants. This study was performed in a placebo-controlled manner in 10 healthy male volunteers (mean age, 23.6 years), with administration of 0.5 mg of RIS oral solution or a placebo in the morning or evening for 2 consecutive days. Each night, polysomnography (PSG) was performed, and PSG data during non-rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep were processed by power spectral analysis. An evening administration of 0.5 mg RIS significantly increased total sleep time, sleep efficiency and sleep stage 3, and significantly decreased total waking time and waking after sleep onset (P < 0.05). A morning administration of 0.5 mg RIS significantly increased sleep stage 3 (P < 0.05). According to power spectral analysis, the evening administration of RIS significantly increased the theta power (P < 0.05) and decreased the beta power (P < 0.05) during non-REM sleep. The administration of 0.5 mg oral RIS increases sleep stage 3 and increases total sleep time following evening administration.

There is evidence for the reciprocal interaction between circadian oscillation and reproduction, and disruption of circadian rhythms has been associated with impaired menstrual functions and reduced fertility in women. However, only little information is available on the relationship between reproduction and chronotype. The aim of the present study is to better assess this relationship. The participants (aged 25 to 74?yrs) were selected randomly from the Finnish Population Information System. The data from 2672 female participants of the National FINRISK Survey 2007 were analyzed to test the associations between chronotype (morning, intermediate, or evening) and reproductive features. Of the participants, 139 (5.6%) were evening, 1217 (48.7%) intermediate, and 1145 (45.8%) morning chronotypes. Among the participants aged 25 to 54?yrs, the duration of menstrual cycle was longer among evening chronotypes (28.8?±?4.4?d) than among morning (27.7?±?2.6?d; p?<?0.01) and intermediate (27.8?±?3.3?d; p?=?0.05) chronotypes. Significant correlations were found between the higher morningness-eveningness scores (the more of morning chronotype) and the shorter durations of menstrual bleeding, both in the whole sample (p?<?0.001) and after limiting the analyses to women younger than 55?yrs (p?<?0.05). In multivariable analyses on the whole sample, as compared with morning chronotypes, intermediate chronotypes had a significantly longer duration of menstrual bleeding (B?=?0.160, 95% confidence interval [CI]?=?0.044 to 0.276; p?<?0.01) as well as a higher odds for difficulties in getting pregnant (odds ratio [OR]?=?1.464, 95% CI?=?1.118 to 1.917; p?<?0.01). A series of trials were conducted to study the effect of either nitrogen source or supply pattern on the growth, rumen fermentation pattern and utilisation of straw by Ethiopian Menz sheep. All experimental sheep were given teff straw basal diet (CON). Irrespective of the trial, treatment sheep were offered either cottonseed cake (CSC), leucaena (LEU) and sesbania (SESM) in the morning prior to teff straw. Additional treatments with sesbaia were offered either in the evening (SESE) or morning and evening (SESME). Measurements included roughage intake, digestibility, kinetics, rumen fermentation patterns, nitrogen utilisation, microbial protein supply and growth of sheep.Rate of degradation was highest (P < 0.05) when sesbania was offered once a day compared with twice a day, while supplementation produced higher (P < 0.05) liquid passage rates. Diets with sesbania produced higher (P < 0.05) roughage intake compared with leucaena. Microbial protein supply as well as N economy were similar (P > 0.05) among the foliage diets irrespective of source, time or frequency of feeding. Supplementation enhanced (P < 0.001) growth rates in sheep, while cottonseed cake (CSC) diet was superior (P < 0.01) to the fodder trees. Growth rates declined across treatments during the second phase (6–10 weeks) compared with the initial period (1–6 weeks). It is also possible for farmers to feed sesbania supplements in the morning or evening or twice daily without any detrimental effects.  相似文献

The authors previously observed blunted phase-shift responses to morning bright light in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The aim of this study was to determine if these findings could be replicated using a higher-intensity, shorter-duration light pulse and to compare these results with the effects of an evening bright-light pulse. In 17 PMDD patients and 14 normal control (NC) subjects, the authors measured plasma melatonin at 30-min intervals from 18:00 to 10:00?h in dim (<30 lux) or dark conditions the night before (Night 1) and after (Night 3) a bright-light pulse (administered on Night 2) in both follicular and luteal menstrual cycle phases. The bright light (either 3000 lux for 6?h or 6000 lux for 3?h) was given either in the morning (AM light), 7?h after the dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) measured the previous month, or in the evening (PM light), 3?h after the DLMO. In the luteal, but not in the follicular, phase, AM light advanced melatonin offset between Night 1 and Night 3 significantly less in PMDD than in NC subjects. The effects of PM light were not significant, nor were there significant effects of the light pulse on melatonin measures of onset, duration, peak, or area under the curve. These findings replicated the authors’ previous finding of a blunted phase-shift response to morning bright light in the luteal, but not the follicular, menstrual cycle phase in PMDD compared with NC women, using a brighter (6000 vs. 3000 lux) light pulse for a shorter duration (3 vs. 6?h). As the effect of PM bright light on melatonin phase-shift responses did not differ between groups or significantly alter other melatonin measures, these results suggest that in PMDD there is a luteal-phase subsensitivity or an increased resistance to morning bright-light cues that are critical in synchronizing human biological rhythms. Captive carnivores appear highly susceptible to the negative effects of predictable feeding routines. Current research and reviews suggest feeding unpredictably may increase species typical behaviour, but positive results have been limited to a few species. Our objectives were to determine whether randomly altering the time and location of feeding increased species typical behaviour, or affected the temporal distribution of captive coyote (Canis latrans) behaviour. We assigned 12 coyotes individually to either a predictable or an unpredictable (in time and location) feeding condition and measured behaviours in the morning and evening. Overall, mean time spent foraging, travelling, resting or standing was similar in both conditions, but coyotes in the unpredictable condition marked (118 vs. 42; P = 0.01, one-tailed) and howled (81 vs. 24; P = 0.05, one-tailed) significantly more than coyotes in the predictable condition. There were also significant temporal differences (a.m. vs. p.m.) in behaviour between conditions. Specifically, coyotes fed predictably foraged (P = 0.03) and travelled (P = 0.03) more in the morning and rested (P = 0.03) more in the evening, whereas coyotes fed unpredictably howled (62 vs. 19; P = 0.03) and stood (P = 0.05) more in the morning and foraged (P = 0.03) more in the evening. Optimum predictability for captive carnivores should be based on species-specific captive study results and relevant ecological data. Our results suggest coyote feeding regimes may be improved by including unpredictable elements nested within a predictable framework to mirror seasonal fluctuations in resources and increase species-specific behaviour in captivity.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the circadian rhythm of body temperature and cortisol, as well as self-reported clock times of sleep onset and offset on weekdays and weekends in 19 healthy adult “larks” (morning chronotypes) and “owls” (evening chronotypes), defined by the Horne and Östberg questionnaire. Day-active subjects entered the General Clinical Research Center, where blood was sampled every 2h over 38h for later analysis for cortisol concentration by enzyme immunoassay. Rectal body temperature was measured continuously. Lights were turned off at 22:30 for sleep and turned on at 06:00, when subjects were awakened. The acrophases (peak times) of the cortisol and temperature rhythms occurred 55 minutes (P ≤.05) and 68 minutes (P <.01), respectively, earlier in the morningness group. The amplitude of the cortisol rhythm was lower in the eveningness than in the morningness group (P = n.s.). The purpose of this study was to examine time-of-day effects on short-term performance in obese young men. In a balanced study design, 30 boys were divided into two groups: obese (OG; n = 15) and non-obese (CG; n = 15) groups. Both groups performed anaerobic tests of strength and power (squat-Jump, SJ; counter-movement jump, CMJ; 10-m sprint; and 30-m sprint) at 08:00 and 17:00 h on separate days. The results showed morning–evening differences in all variables in CG, with significant increases at 17:00 h (around the time of peak temperature) in comparison with 08:00 h (p < 0.01) for OG. However, such morning-evening differences were not found in the OG, except for the 30-m sprint. Obesity affects the diurnal variation on performances of 30-m sprint with a significant decrease in the evening for OG of 1.23% (p < 0.01). A correlation between anaerobic performance and oral temperature was observed only in the 30-m sprint test. In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicated that obesity is a problem that can affect circadian rhythms and performance in obese young men; therefore, preventing childhood obesity should become a top priority in efforts to improve performance and health.  相似文献

Factors contributing to sleep timing and sleep restriction in daily life include chronotype and less flexibility in times available for sleep on scheduled days versus free days. There is some evidence that these two factors interact, with morning types and evening types reporting similar sleep need, but evening types being more likely to accumulate a sleep debt during the week and to have greater sleep extension on weekend nights. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the independent contributions of circadian phase and weekend-to-weekday variability to sleep timing in daily life. The study included 14 morning types and 14 evening types recruited from a community-based sample of New Zealand adults (mean age 41.1 ± 4.7 years). On days 1–15, the participants followed their usual routines in their own homes and daily sleep start, midpoint and end times were determined by actigraphy and sleep diaries. Days 16–17 involved a 17 h modified constant routine protocol in the laboratory (17:00 to 10:00, <20 lux) with half-hourly saliva samples assayed for melatonin. Mixed model ANCOVAs for repeated measures were used to investigate the independent relationships between sleep start and end times (separate models) and age (30–39 years versus 40–49 years), circadian phase [time of the dim light melatonin onset (DLMO)] and weekday/weekend schedules (Sunday–Thursday nights versus Friday–Saturday nights). As expected on weekdays, evening types had later sleep start times (mean = 23:47 versus 22:37, p < .0001) and end times (mean = 07:14 versus 05:56, p < .0001) than morning types. Similarly on weekend days, evening types had later sleep start times (mean = 00:14 versus 23:07, p = .0032) and end times (mean = 08:56 versus 07:04, p < .0001) than morning types. Evening types also had later DLMO (22:06 versus 20:46, p = .0002) than morning types (mean difference = 80.4 min, SE = 18.6 min). The ANCOVA models found that later sleep start times were associated with later DLMO (p = .0172) and weekend-to-weekday sleep timing variability (p < .0001), after controlling for age, while later sleep end times were associated with later DLMO (p = .0038), younger age (p = .0190) and weekend days (p < .0001). Sleep end times showed stronger association with DLMO (for every 30 min delay in DLMO, estimated mean sleep end time occurred 14.0 min later versus 10.19 min later for sleep start times). Sleep end times also showed greater delays on weekends versus weekdays (estimated mean delay for sleep end time = 84 min, for sleep start time = 28 min). Comparing morning types and evening types, the estimated contributions of the DLMO to the mean observed differences in sleep timing were on weekdays, 39% for sleep start times and 49% for sleep end times; and on weekends, 41% for sleep start times and 34% of sleep end times. We conclude that differences in sleep timing between morning types and evening types were much greater than would be predicted on the basis of the independent contribution of the difference in DLMO on both weekdays and weekend days. The timing of sleep in daily life involves complex interactions between physiological and psychosocial factors, which may be moderated by age in adults aged 30–49 years.  相似文献

During the last few decades, the incidence of sleep-onset insomnia, due to delay of circadian phase, has increased substantially among adolescents all over the world. We wanted to investigate whether a small dose of melatonin given daily, administered in the afternoon, could advance the sleep timing in teenagers. Twenty-one students, aged 14–19 yrs, with sleep-onset difficulties during school weeks were recruited. The study was a randomized, double blind, placebo (PL)-controlled crossover trial, lasting 5 wks. During the first 6 d in wks 2 and 4, the students received either PL or melatonin (1 mg) capsules between 16:30 and 18:00 h. During the first 6 d of wk 5, all students received melatonin. Wks 1 and 3 were capsule-free. In the last evening of each week and the following morning, the students produced saliva samples at home for later melatonin analysis. The samples were produced the same time each week, as late as possible in the evening and as early as possible in the morning. Both the student and one parent received automatic mobile text messages 15 min before saliva sampling times and capsule intake at agreed times. Diaries with registration of presumed sleep, subjective sleepiness during the day (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, KSS) and times for capsule intake and saliva samplings were completed each day. Primary analysis over 5 wks gave significant results for melatonin, sleep and KSS. Post hoc analysis showed that reported sleep-onset times were advanced after melatonin school weeks compared with PL school weeks (p < .005) and that sleep length was longer (p < .05). After the last melatonin school week, the students fell asleep 68 min earlier and slept 62 min longer each night compared with the baseline week. Morning melatonin values in saliva diminished compared with PL (p < .001) and evening values increased (p < .001), indicating a possible sleep phase advance. Compared with PL school weeks, the students reported less wake up (p < .05), less school daytime sleepiness (p < .05) and increased evening sleepiness (p < .005) during melatonin weeks. We conclude that a small dose of melatonin given daily, administered in the afternoon, could advance the sleep timing and make the students more alert during school days even if they continued their often irregular sleep habits during weekends. The objective of this study was to compare light exposure and sleep parameters between adolescents with delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD; n?=?16, 15.3?±?1.8 yrs) and unaffected controls (n?=?22, 13.7?±?2.4 yrs) using a prospective cohort design. Participants wore wrist actigraphs with photosensors for 14 days. Mean hourly lux levels from 20:00 to 05:00?h and 05:00 to 14:00?h were examined, in addition to the 9-h intervals prior to sleep onset and after sleep offset. Sleep parameters were compared separately, and were also included as covariates within models that analyzed associations with specified light intervals. Additional covariates included group and school night status. Adolescent delayed sleep phase subjects received more evening (p?<?.02, 22:00–02:00?h) and less morning (p?<?.05, 08:00–09:00?h and 10:00–12:00?h) light than controls, but had less pre-sleep exposure with adjustments for the time of sleep onset (p?<?.03, 5–7?h prior to onset hour). No differences were identified with respect to the sleep offset interval. Increased total sleep time and later sleep offset times were associated with decreased evening (p?<?.001 and p?=?.02, respectively) and morning (p?=?.01 and p?<?.001, respectively) light exposure, and later sleep onset times were associated with increased evening exposure (p?<?.001). Increased total sleep time also correlated with increased exposure during the 9?h before sleep onset (p?=?.01), and a later sleep onset time corresponded with decreased light exposure during the same interval (p?<?.001). Outcomes persisted regardless of school night status. In conclusion, light exposure interpretation requires adjustments for sleep timing among adolescents with DSPD. Effect of sprinkling on feedlot microclimate and cattle behavior   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Experiments were conducted to evaluate strategies designed to reduce heat stress of cattle. In the first experiment, cattle were sprinkled for 20 min every 1.5 h between 1000 hours and 1750 hours (WET) versus not sprinkled (DRY). In a second experiment, treatments consisted of: (1) control, no water application; (2) water applied to the pen surfaces between 1000 hours and 1200 hours (AM); and (3) water applied to pen surfaces between 1400 hours and 1600 hours (PM). In both experiments, sprinkling lowered (P < 0.05) mid-afternoon temperatures. In the first experiment, relative humidity (RH) of WET versus DRY pens differed (P < 0.05) and averaged 72.4 and 68.9%, respectively. The average temperature–humidity index (THI) in WET pens was 0.5 units lower (P < 0.05), than the THI in DRY pens. In the second experiment, RH in sprinkled pens was also greater (P < 0.05) than RH in control (CON) pens However, THI differed (P < 0.05) among treatments, being 81.5, 80.9, and 80.3, respectively for CON, AM, and PM. Pens with sprinklers had a larger percentage of steers in areas where sprinkling took place, even on days when sprinkling had not occurred. Based on differences in percentage of cattle panting in sprinkled and non-sprinkled treatments, sprinkling was found to have a positive effect on cattle feeding area microclimate and to reduce the susceptibility of cattle to hyperthermia. However, cattle acclimatization to being sprinkled can result in slight hyperthermia even during cooler days when sprinkling would normally not be utilized.  相似文献
