The present report attempts to help clarify the causal or consequent relation between frequently reported high rates of delay discounting (DD) associated with cigarette-smoking status in adults. Delay-discount functions of adolescent smokers and young-adult smokers and nonsmokers from two earlier studies [Reynolds, B., Karraker, K., Horn, K., Richards, J.B., 2003. Delay and probability discounting as related to different stages of adolescent smoking and non-smoking. Behav. Process. 64, 333-344; Reynolds, B., Richards, J.B., Horn, K., Karraker, K., 2004. Delay discounting and probability discounting as related to cigarette smoking status in adults. Behav. Process. 65, 35-42] were cross-sectionally compared. If a high rate of DD is a predisposing factor to future smoking status, adolescent and young-adult smokers were expected to have similar rates of DD, but both groups were expected to have higher rates of discounting than young-adult nonsmokers. Alternatively, if a high rate of cigarette consumption over an extended period is related to increases in DD, young-adult smokers were expected to discount more than adolescent smokers and young-adult nonsmokers. Results supported the hypothesis that a high rate of cigarette consumption is related to higher rates of DD, rather than the alternative hypothesis that smokers are predisposed with higher rates of DD. Also, after combining adolescent and young-adult smokers, self-reported number of cigarettes consumed per day was positively correlated with rate of DD; however, reported length of smoking history was not correlated with DD. Possible neurological mechanisms leading to increased discounting are discussed.  相似文献

Some major evolutionary theories predict a relationship between rates of proliferation of new species (species diversification) and rates of morphological divergence between them. However, this relationship has not been rigorously tested using phylogeny-based approaches. Here, we test this relationship with morphological and phylogenetic data from 190 species of plethodontid salamanders. Surprisingly, we find that rates of species diversification and morphological evolution are not significantly correlated, such that rapid diversification can occur with little morphological change, and vice versa. We also find that most clades have undergone remarkably similar patterns of morphological evolution (despite extensive sympatry) and that those relatively novel phenotypes are not associated with rapid diversification. Finally, we find a strong relationship between rates of size and shape evolution, which has not been previously tested.  相似文献

Amount-dependent temporal discounting has been demonstrated for human choice between outcomes differing in amount and delay. In the only study to date with non-humans, Grace reported no evidence for amount-dependent temporal discounting with pigeons in a concurrent-chains procedure. The present experiments repeated Grace's procedure but with modifications to enhance the discrimination between small and large magnitude outcomes. In Experiment 1, sensitivity of pigeons' initial-link choice to the terminal link delay ratio was greater with large reinforcer durations in the terminal links than with small reinforcer durations. This result is consistent with a greater rate of temporal discounting for larger reinforcers (the reverse of the result for humans), but can also be explained as enhanced discrimination of delay ratios with larger reinforcer durations. The results of a second experiment supported Grace's conclusion that amount-dependent temporal discounting does not characterize pigeons' choice in concurrent chains. Because reinforcer amount was held constant between choice alternatives in the present experiments and that of Grace, but varied in the human studies, our results question whether prior demonstrations of amount-dependent discounting reflect the effects of reinforcer delay or of reinforcer amount. Differences in the procedures used to study discounting in humans (titration procedures) and non-humans (concurrent chains) may contribute to the divergent results across species.  相似文献

Delay discounting refers to the tendency for outcomes that are remote in time to have less value than more immediate outcomes. Steep discounting of delayed outcomes is associated with a variety of social maladies. The degree of sensitivity to delayed outcomes may be a stable and pervasive individual characteristic. In analyses of archival data, the present study found positive correlations between the degree of delay discounting for one outcome (as measured by the Area Under the Curve), and the degree of discounting for other outcomes. Along with additional evidence reviewed, these data suggest that delay discounting may be considered a personality trait. Recent research in epigenetics, neuroscience, and behavior suggests delay discounting may prove to be a beneficial target for therapeutic attempts to produce global reductions in impulsivity related to delay discounting.  相似文献

In capture–recapture studies, the estimation accuracy of demographic parameters is essential to the efficacy of management of hunted animal populations. Dead recovery models based upon the reporting of rings or bands are often used for estimating survival of waterfowl and other harvested species. However, distance from the ringing site or condition of the bird may introduce substantial individual heterogeneity in the conditional band reporting rates (r), which could cause bias in estimated survival rates (S) or suggest nonexistent individual heterogeneity in S. To explore these hypotheses, we ran two sets of simulations (n = 1000) in MARK using Seber''s dead recovery model, allowing time variation on both S and r. This included a series of heterogeneity models, allowing substantial variation on logit(r), and control models with no heterogeneity. We conducted simulations using two different values of S: S = 0.60, which would be typical of dabbling ducks such as mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), and S = 0.80, which would be more typical of sea ducks or geese. We chose a mean reporting rate on the logit scale of −1.9459 with SD = 1.5 for the heterogeneity models (producing a back-transformed mean of 0.196 with SD = 0.196, median = 0.125) and a constant reporting rate for the control models of 0.196. Within these sets of simulations, estimation models where σS = 0 and σS > 0 (σS is SD of individual survival rates on the logit scale) were incorporated to investigate whether real heterogeneity in r would induce apparent individual heterogeneity in S. Models where σS = 0 were selected approximately 91% of the time over models where σS > 0. Simulation results showed < 0.05% relative bias in estimating survival rates except for models estimating σS > 0 when true S = 0.8, where relative bias was a modest 0.5%. These results indicate that considerable variation in reporting rates does not cause major bias in estimated survival rates of waterfowl, further highlighting the robust nature of dead recovery models that are being used for the management of harvested species.  相似文献

Molecular simulations are often used to analyse the stability of protein–ligand complexes. The stability can be characterised by exit rates or using the exit time approach, i.e. by computing the expected holding time of the complex before its dissociation. However determining exit rates by straightforward molecular dynamics methods can be challenging for stochastic processes in which the exit event occurs very rarely. Finding a low variance procedure for collecting rare event statistics is still an open problem. In this work we discuss a novel method for computing exit rates which uses results of Robust Perron Cluster Analysis (PCCA+). This clustering method gives the possibility to define a fuzzy set by a membership function, which provides additional information of the kind ‘the process is being about to leave the set’. Thus, the derived approach is not based on the exit event occurrence and, therefore, is also applicable in case of rare events. The novel method can be used to analyse the temperature effect of protein–ligand systems through the differences in exit rates, and, thus, open up new drug design strategies and therapeutic applications.  相似文献

Summary Rooted phylogenetic trees for a total of 34 genes encoding the stimulatory (s), inhibitory (i), transducin (t), Gx (x), Gz (z), G11 (11), G12 (12), G13 (13), G16 (16), Gq (q), and other (o) G protein a subunits have been constructed. The analysis shows that the G12 (12 and 13), Gq (11, 16, and q), and Gs (s genes) groups form one cluster, and the Gx (x and z genes), Gi (i genes), Gt (t1 and t2), and Go (o genes) groups form another cluster. During mammalian evolution, the rates of synonymous substitutions for these genes were estimated to be between 1.77 × 10–9/site/year and 5.63 × 10–9/site/year, whereas those of nonsynonymous substitutions were between 0.008 × 10–9/site/year and 0.067 × 10–9/site/year. These evolutionary rates are similar to those for histone genes, suggesting equally important biological functions of the G protein a subunits. Offprint requests to: S. Yokoyama  相似文献

Summary It has been suggested that there may be inequalities in the types of substitution on the two DNA strands (in particular, in the frequencies of transversions from R to Y and from Y to R) due to a higher error rate on the lagging than the leading strand during replication. Reexamination of 11 kb of the -globin region sequenced in six primates fails to confirm this suggestion. Examination of the 73-kb -globin region sequenced in humans shows that the frequency of pyrimidines in different parts of this region is more variable than expected in a random sequence, but the pattern is more consistent with nonrandomness generated by DNA turnover mechanisms than with strand asymmetry due to a higher error rate on the lagging strand.  相似文献

It is currently believed that the protein folding rate is related to the protein structures and its amino acid sequence. However, few studies have been done on the problem that whether the protein folding rate is influenced by its corresponding mRNA sequence. In this paper, we analyzed the possible relationship between the protein folding rates and the corresponding mRNA sequences. The content of guanine and cytosine (GC content) of palindromes in protein coding sequence was introduced as a new parameter and added in the Gromiha's model of predicting protein folding rates to inspect its effect in protein folding process. The multiple linear regression analysis and jack-knife test show that the new parameter is significant. The linear correlation coefficient between the experimental and the predicted values of the protein folding rates increased significantly from 0.96 to 0.99, and the population variance decreased from 0.50 to 0.24 compared with Gromiha's results. The results show that the GC content of palindromes in the corresponding protein coding sequence really influences the protein folding rate. Further analysis indicates that this kind of effect mostly comes from the synonymous codon usage and from the information of palindrome structure itself, but not from the translation information from codons to amino acids.  相似文献

Does nitrogen availability control rates of litter decomposition in forests?   总被引:14,自引:1,他引:13
Prescott  C. E. 《Plant and Soil》1995,168(1):83-88
The effects of increased exogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition were assessed in several field fertilization trials. In a jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) forest, needle litter decomposed at the same rate in control plots and in plots fertilized with urea and ammonium nitrate (1350 kg N ha-1) with or without P and K. Mixed needle litter of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), western red cedar (Thuja plicata Donn) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) incubated in plots recently amended with sewage sludge (500 kg N ha-1) lost less weight during 3 years than did litter in control plots. Forest floor material also decomposed more slowly in plots amended with sewage sludge. Paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) leaf litter placed on sewage sludge (1000 kg N ha-1), pulp sludge, or sewage-pulp sludge mixtures decomposed at the same rate as leaf litter in control plots. These experiments demonstrate little effect of exogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition. The influence of endogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition was examined in a microcosm experiment. Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm.) needle litter collected from N-fertilized trees (525 kg N ha-1 in ammonium nitrate) were 5 times richer in N than needles from control trees (1.56% N versus 0.33% N in control trees), but decomposed at the same rate. Green needles from fertilized trees contained twice as much N as needles from control trees (1.91% N versus 0.88% N), but decomposed at the same rate. These experiments suggest that N availability alone, either exogenous or endogenous, does not control rates of litter decomposition. Increased N availability, through fertilization or deposition, in the absence of changes in vegetation composition, will not alter rates of litter decomposition in forests.  相似文献

A plethora of studies have been conducted since the 1920s on avian thermoregulatory physiology variables as measured using respirometry. In particular, many of these studies have determined basal metabolic rate in a wide array of avian taxa. Start time of experiment, duration of experiment, length and number of measurements to determine the resting metabolic rate at a particular temperature (RMRTa) were reviewed in avian metabolic studies prior to 2011. Although respirometry is considered a standard technique, it was evident that in avian studies there is a continuum of duration time used for measurements with a number of studies (30%) using only 1–2 h data collection while at the other end of the continuum a number of studies (22%) have used 9–15 h data collection (and some longer). Many studies are unclear in how many hours were used (22%) to collect data. We found that most avian studies (94%) were on postabsorptive birds and most were during the birds' rest phase (69.5%). The majority (62.6%) of studies only measured metabolic rate at one temperature per trial, while others (19.2%) have measured RMRTa at various temperatures within a single trial period. Recently, several studies have shown that for diurnal birds measurements need to be conducted during the scotophase, for the duration of the night (>9 h; except at extreme temperatures where evaporative water loss is high and may result in mortalities), and at one experimental temperature per night if reliable and precise data are to be obtained. In addition, repeated measures need to be stable for at least an hour to be considered as RMRTa. Consequently, given the variance in methods used in prior avian metabolic studies cognizance of this is required when designing and implementing avian thermoregulatory physiological measurements using respirometry, particularly if data are later used for comparative allometric studies.  相似文献

Is a given instance of rape more likely to result in pregnancy than a given instance of consensual sex? This paper undertakes a review and critique of the literature on rape-pregnancy. Next, it presents our own estimation, from U.S. government data, of pregnancy rates for reproductive age victims of penile-vaginal rape. Using data on birth control usage from the Statistical Abstract of the United States, we then form an estimate of rapepregnancy rates adjusted for the substantial number of women in our sample who would likely have been protected by oral contraception or an IUD. Our analysis suggests that per-incident rape-pregnancy rates exceed per-incident consensual pregnancy rates by a sizable margin, even before adjusting for the use of relevant forms of birth control. Possible explanations for this phenomenon are discussed, as are its implications to ongoing debates over the ultimate causes of rape.  相似文献

Understanding why rates of morphological evolution vary is a major goal in evolutionary biology. Classical work suggests that body size, interspecific competition, geographic range size and specialization may all be important, and each may increase or decrease rates of evolution. Here, we investigate correlates of proportional evolutionary rates in phalangeriform possums, phyllostomid bats, platyrrhine monkeys and marmotine squirrels, using phylogenetic comparative methods. We find that the most important correlate is body size. Large species evolve the fastest in all four clades, and there is a nonlinear relationship in platyrrhines and phalangeriformes, with the slowest evolution in species of intermediate size. We also find significant increases in rate with high environmental temperature in phyllostomids, and low mass-specific metabolic rate in marmotine squirrels. The mechanisms underlying these correlations are uncertain and appear to be size specific. We conclude that there is significant variation in rates of evolution, but that its meaning is not yet clear.  相似文献

Summary Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) carrying dummy instruments were used to determine field metabolic rates using double-labelled water. All penguins injected with double-labelled water showed a marked loss of body mass (-4.5%) during the period of the experiments (20–131 h), irrespective of the time of the breeding season. Total body water averaged 57.3% and water flux estimates of field metabolic rates correlated with double-labelled water estimates of field metabolic rate (r 2=0.68), indicating that Adélie penguins do not ingest significant amounts of sea water. Brooding Adélie penguins had a mean field metabolic rate of 10.1 W·kg-1 and at sea a field metabolic rate of 13.3 W·kg-1, both of which compare well with previously published estimates based on time/activity budgets and respirometry. Mean field metabolic rate in penguins with crèching chicks was 14.1 W·kg-1, and the birds spent 65 h absent from the nest as opposed to previous estimates of 7.1 W·kg-1 and 21 h. The effects of weather, disturbance and manipulation on the behaviour and field metabolic rate of penguins late in the breeding season are discussed. Adélie penguins (crèching chicks) equipped with externally attached instruments spent more time absent from the nest than noninstrumented controls (76 vs 54 h), but had a lower field metabolic rate.Abbreviations ANOVA analysis of variance - DLW double-labelled water - FMR field metabolic rate - MR metabolic rate - RMR resting metabolic rate - TBW total body water - VSMOW Vienna standard mean ocean water - WF water flux  相似文献

Aphid predators are a systematically disparate group of arthropods united on the basis that they consume aphids as part of their diet. In Europe, this group includes Araneae, Opiliones, Heteroptera, chrysopids, Forficulina, syrphid larvae, carabids, staphylinids, cantharids and coccinellids. This functional group has no phylogenetic meaning but was created by ecologists as a way of understanding predation, particularly for conservation biological control. We investigated whether trait-based approaches could bring some cohesion and structure to this predator group. A taxonomic hierarchy-based null model was created from taxonomic distances in which a simple multiplicative relationship described the Linnaean hierarchies (species, genera, etc.) of fifty common aphid predators. Using the same fifty species, a functional groups model was developed using ten behavioural traits (e.g. polyphagy, dispersal, activity, etc.) to describe the way in which aphids were predated in the field. The interrelationships between species were then expressed as dissimilarities within each model and separately analysed using PROXSCAL, a multidimensional scaling (MDS) program. When ordinated using PROXSCAL and then statistically compared using Procrustes analysis, we found that only 17% of information was shared between the two configurations. Polyphagy across kingdoms (i.e. predatory behaviour across animal, plant and fungi kingdoms) and the ability to withstand starvation over days, weeks and months were particularly divisive within the functional groups model. Confirmatory MDS indicated poor prediction of aphid predation rates by the configurations derived from either model. The counterintuitive conclusion was that the inclusion of functional traits, pertinent to the way in which predators fed on aphids, did not lead to a large improvement in the prediction of predation rate when compared to the standard taxonomic approach.  相似文献
