Under controlled conditions, the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata(Wiedemann) preferred to initiate oviposition into preexisting, naturally formed oviposition punctures in a host fruit, kumquat (Fortunella japonica),over establishing new sites on the fruit. This preference was expressed despite the presence of naturally deposited host-marking pheromone (HMP)shown previously to deter oviposition. An almost-identical preference for existing punctures was expressed when females were presented with fruit bearing artificially made punctures on which HMP had been naturally deposited. Using artificial punctures and HMP extracts, the occurrence of punctures was manipulated independently of the presence of HMP.Under field-cage conditions, we found that (1) punctures stimulated egg-laying on kumquats, regardless of HMP treatment; (2) HMP extract inhibited egg-laying, regardless of the occurrence of punctures; and (3) the extent to which HMP inhibited egg-laying was greater on fruit free of punctures than on fruit bearing them. The physiological, evolutionary, and pest management implications of these results are discussed.

Male apple maggot flies spend considerable time residing on individual host fruit as territories on which they force-copulate arriving females in search of oviposition sites. Here, we present evidence from investigations in nature and the laboratory that shows the propensity of males to reside on a hawthorn or apple fruit as a territory is significantly modifiable through prior experience with fruit and, hence, involves learning. Previous studies revealed that after a female apple maggot fly, Rhagoletis pomonella, arrived on a host hawthorn or apple fruit, its propensity to accept or reject that fruit for egg-laying was similarly modifiable through prior fruit-exposure experience and also involved learning. We discuss how host fruit learning in males and females, in concert with genetic-based differences in host fruit residence and acceptance behavior between populations of flies originating from hawthorn and apple, could give rise to a reduction in gene flow between populations of flies on these two host types.

Laboratory experiments tested whether two economically-important sibling species of tephritid fruit flies have evolved distinct egg-laying responses to chemical stimuli on the fruits of their respective hostplants. The egg-laying preferences displayed by apple maggot flies, R. pomonella, and blueberry maggot flies, R. mendax, on artificial fruits treated with apple and blueberry extract paralleled their egg-laying responses to whole apples and blueberries. R. pomonella flies laid more eggs than R. mendax flies in artificial fruits treated with extract from ripe McIntosh apples, and vice versa for artificial fruits treated with extract from ripe Bluehaven blueberries. Furthermore, both species laid more eggs in artificial fruits treated with extract from their respective host fruits than control artificial fruits which were not treated with fruit extract. Prior electroantennogram recordings from R. mendax and R. pomonella flies exposed to volatiles from pentane extracts of apples and blueberries indicate that the antennal sensitivity of both species is selectively tuned to their respective host fruit odors. This differentiation in their olfactory responses to fruit odors could be important in mediating their distinct ovipositional responses to blueberry and apple fruits. Extract from unripe McIntosh apples also elicited egg laying by R. pomonella flies, however, artificial fruits treated with unripe apple extract received 1.9 times fewer eggs than those treated with ripe apple extract. Moreover, the numbers of R. pomonella ovipositor punctures and eggs placed in wax artificial fruits were increased when the artificial fruits were treated with a blend of 7 identified apple esters. Black coloration on these artificial fruits and the presence of apple esters had a synergistic effect on the egg-laying behavior of R. pomonella flies, which caused them to lay substantially more eggs per black fruit than white fruit treated with the same concentration of apple esters. In summary, our results indicate that the egg-laying responses of R. pomonella flies are mediated by the integration of information from fruit chemical and visual cues, and that R. mendax and R. pomonella flies have evolved divergent egg-laying responses to chemical stimuli on the fruits of their respective hostplants. These findings are discussed in the context of other studies on plant compounds which influence the ovipositional behavior of phytophagous Diptera.

Summary. The nesting behavior of the euglossine bee Euglossa townsendi was studied on the campus of the University of São Paulo-Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil, from January 1994 to December 1999, using artificial nesting substrate and observation boxes. Twenty-one nests were founded during the study period, with the highest frequencies of nesting occurring during the hot, wet season. Each nest was founded by a single female and, after the completion of the last cell, she spent most of her time in the nest. The males left the nest immediately after emergence and did not return. Some females left the nest within a few days of eclosing, while others stayed in their natal nests and began to reactivate them. Reactivations were performed by a single female, by one or more females in the presence of the mother, by more than one female in the absence of the mother, and by more than one female in the presence of females that participated in the prior reactivation. According to behavior, the females were classified as forager/egg-laying and egg-laying females. The oviposition by egg-laying females was always preceded by oophagy. All of the forager/egg-laying and egg-laying females that were dissected had been inseminated. The behavior displayed by egg-laying females is characteristic of brood parasitism and fits the parental parasitism hypothesis developed as an alternative pathway by which insect sociality could have arisen. The behaviors displayed by E. townsendi, together with those reported for Euglossa cordata, show that both species have bionomic traits that resemble the conditions suggested as precursors of the origin of eusociality.Received 12 June 2003; revised 6 April 2004; accepted 22 April 2004.

Casual observations suggested that female Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann) exploit fruit wounds (including pre-existing oviposition punctures) as oviposition sites. This behaviour was quantified under field conditions in a citrus grove on the Greek island of Chios. Fruit wounds influenced oviposition behaviour in three ways. First, females were more likely to land on oranges (Citrus sinensis) that were artificially wounded than into unwounded control oranges. Second, having landed, females were more likely to attempt oviposition into a wounded orange than into control oranges. Third, females that attempted oviposition into wounded oranges usually did so directly into or very near the wound. The diameter and depth of the wound significantly influenced the tendency for female flies to land on a fruit but not their propensity, having landed, to attempt oviposition in or near the wound. The significance of this behavior in nature and implications for management of the Mediterranean fruit fly are discussed.

Anaphes victus Huber andAnaphes listronoti Huber (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are respectively solitary and gregarious egg parasitoids of the carrot weevil,Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). We made detailed ethograms of the oviposition behavior on unparasitized and parasitized hosts for the two species. We then compared the behavior of virgin and mated females for the oviposition of male and female progenies. The two species did not always oviposit after insertion of the ovipositor, but these punctures without oviposition could be readily differentiated from oviposition.A. victus oviposited only once by puncture, whileA. listronoti deposited one to three eggs during the same sequence. The variability of the duration of the various components was generally lower for a given female than between females. Two components, the abdominal vibrations and the pause, were significantly shorter in ovipositions that resulted in male progency for the two species. However, an important overlap in duration prevents using these differences to sex the progeny at oviposition. Virgin females of both species, although capable of producing only males, exhibited both behaviors. Parasitized hosts were recognized through internal and external markings that were used in host discrimination.

Males of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (medfly), defend individual leaves of host and non-host trees as mating territories and attract females via production of a sex pheromone (a behavior termed ‘calling’). Males tend to aggregate within the tree canopy, and the present study examined the influence of (1) location and (2) resources on female visitation to male aggregations. Males were placed in screen-covered containers, which were suspended on field-caged trees at two locations selected to differ in only one of the following parameters: height above ground (low versus high), leaf density (sparse versus dense), distance to main trunk (canopy edge versus center), proximity to a food source (bird feces absent or present), and proximity to a host fruit (oranges absent or present). Females were released, and we periodically recorded the number of calling males in each of the test aggregations as well as the number of females sighted within 15 cm of each male aggregation. Male calling did not differ between treatments in any of the experiments. However, females were more frequently sighted near males calling (1) in dense foliage, (2) near the central trunk, (3) near bird feces, and (4) near oranges. In an additional experiment, we compared male settlement (in the absence of females) on leaves in the same sites used previously to determine the degree of congruence between the sexes in microhabitat use. Aside from the lack of center-edge effect, males displayed the same settlement patterns as females. In a final experiment, we found no effect of male calling on the distribution of other males: released males were sighted with equal frequency near cups containing mature, calling males and cups containing immature, non-calling males. Medfly lek behavior is discussed in light of these findings.

Fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster females display rhythmic egg-laying under 12:12?h light/dark (LD) cycles which persists with near 24?h periodicity under constant darkness (DD). We have shown previously that persistence of this rhythm does not require the neurons expressing pigment dispersing factor (PDF), thought to be the canonical circadian pacemakers, and proposed that it could be controlled by peripheral clocks or regulated/triggered by the act of mating. We assayed egg-laying behaviour of wild-type Canton S (CS) females under LD, DD and constant light (LL) conditions in three different physiological states; as virgins, as females allowed to mate with males for 1?day and as females allowed to mate for the entire duration of the assay. Here, we report the presence of a circadian rhythm in egg-laying in virgin D. melanogaster females. We also found that egg-laying behaviour of 70 and 90% females from all the three male presence/absence protocols follows circadian rhythmicity under DD and LL, with periods ranging between 18 and 30?h. The egg-laying rhythm of all virgin females synchronized to LD cycles with a peak occurring soon after lights-off. The rhythm in virgins was remarkably robust with maximum number of eggs deposited immediately after lights-off in contrast to mated females which show higher egg-laying during the day. These results suggest that the egg-laying rhythm of D. melanogaster is endogenously driven and is neither regulated nor triggered by the act of mating; instead, the presence of males results in reduction in entrainment to LD cycles.

Male behavior and regulation of worker mating were observed in Indonesian Pachycondyla sp. The colonies had some mated workers but only one gamergate (mated and egg-laying workers). Males frequently tried to mate with workers in their natal nests irrespective of worker age and dominance rank, however, workers never accepted mounting of nestmate males. Worker mating occurred only under the gamergateless condition with alien males.

Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae), infests many horticultural fruit crops in the eastern part of Australia. Farmers usually apply synthetic insecticides to control this pest. Little is known on the use of plant products especially vegetable oils for fruit fly control although they are considered to be safer than synthetic insecticides. In this study, safflower oil was investigated for its mechanism and effectiveness against female B. tryoni. In a laboratory test, safflower oil treatments (2.5 and 5.0 ml l?1) reduced the number of fly punctures on treated artificial fruits, no matter whether pre‐punctures were present or absent. Safflower oil treatments also reduced the number of fly landings and eggs laid, but only when the treated artificial fruits were without pre‐punctures. These results confirmed that safflower oil is active against female B. tryoni mainly by preventing this fruit fly from making oviposition punctures, not by discouraging them from depositing eggs or by repelling them. The slippery nature of safflower oil is considered to be responsible for a reduction in the susceptibility of artificial fruit to fruit fly punctures. Further investigation using fruit‐bearing tomato plants (a no‐choice test) in a glasshouse situation revealed that safflower oil application at concentrations of 10 and 15 ml l?1 reduced the number of oviposition punctures but failed to reduce the number of eggs laid. To increase efficacy of safflower oil under field conditions, multiple tools may be needed to reduce fruit fly populations and oviposition behaviour, such as the addition of trap‐crops, provision of artificial oviposition sites, or mixing the insecticides with the oil.

We used bioassays to evaluate the arrestment response of male twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, and Banks grass mite, Oligonychus pratensis (Banks) to whole-body extract from conspecific quiescent deutonymphs. We examined the effect of previous behavior on mite response to extract from female quiescent deutonymphs. We also examined male arrestment and guarding behavior in response to 2 extract concentrations and to extract from male quiescent deutonymphs. Male T. urticae and O. pratensis exhibited similar changes in their behavior in response to the different extracts with which we presented them. Males that were guarding quiescent deutonymphs immediately prior to testing spent more time in an untreated 3.5-mm-diameter circle than did males that were previously engaged in other behaviors. However, when nonguarding males were presented with extract of conspecific female quiescent deutonymphs they remained in the stimulus circle as long as guarding males did in an untreated circle. Arrestment duration of nonguarding males increased at 2 higher extract concentrations. The arrestment response was not exclusive to extracts from female quiescent deutonymphs; nonguarding male mites were also arrested by extracts from male quiescent deutonymphs, although for a shorter time. Duration of arrestment was related roughly to size differences between male and female quiescent deutonymphs. Furthermore, males did not show an exclusive preference for guarding conspecific male or female quiescent deutonymphs. It seems unlikely that the arrestant is a specific sex pheromone. Rather, male mites probably use the arrestant as a necessary cue to focus their attention on an individual that may be a suitable mate. Other tactile, visual, and chemical stimuli may then help males to decide whether to remain and assume mate guarding behaviors.

Oriental fruit flies,Bactrocera dorsalis, cultured in the laboratory for six generations, were released when 12–14 days old in an orchard of nonfruiting host trees that were furnished with either food and water, nonpunctured host fruit, punctured host fruit, or no resources. Nearly all flies of both sexes, all sexual behavior of males, and all mating pairs were observed on trees with fruit. Moreover, on trees with fruit, nearly all flies of both sexes, nearly all sexual behavior of males, and nearly all mating pairs occurred on the fruit itself rather than on the foliage or branches. In a subsequent test, both sexes were found to be strongly attracted to the odor of host fruit. For a polyphagous species of a tropical tephritid, these findings are the first to show a high level of male aggregation and a high amount of male sexual behavior on the fruit of host trees. Findings are discussed in relation to current knowledge of tephritid mating behavior. An additional quality-control test for laboratory cultured males used in the sterile insect technique of fly management is recommended.

Apple maggot females, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), were maintained (with males) singly or in groups of 5 in laboratory cages without fruit from eclosion until 15 days of age (when males were removed). When hawthorn, apple or artificial fruit were introduced on Day 16, females caged in groups laid significantly more eggs per female, irrespective of fruit type, than females caged singly. A follow-up laboratory experiment revealed that the oviposition-enhancing effect of grouping was due largely or exclusively to caging regime on day of access to fruit and not to prior caging regime. Subsequent laboratory-cage tests indicated that none of the following factors contributed significantly to the oviposition-enhancing effect of grouping under laboratory cage conditions: odor of fruit punctures, odor of eggs, odor of marking pheromone, or presence of other females on fruit, all as potential stimuli eliciting female attraction to fruit; or presence of fruit punctures, eggs, or marking pheromone, all as potential oviposition-enhancing stimuli following alighting on a fruit. The only contributing factor of significance uncovered here was the enhanced propensity of an arriving female to bore into a fruit shortly after encounter with an occupying female engaged in ovipositional behavior. We consider such enhancement as suggestive of socially facilitated egglaying behavior, which we discuss.

Male and female Anastrepha suspensa(Loew) had a clumped distribution in the foliage of their guava host plants. Males were no closer to other males than they were to females or than females were to other females. Flies were often found in roughly the same locations over time. However, contemporaries (flies present at the same time) were closer to each other than subsequent flies were to their predecessors. Males were more likely to be found near spots previously occupied by males than they were to spots used previously by females. Some trees had more flies than others, but there was no regional (northwest, etc.) preference within trees. Females were no more likely to be found in the vicinity of clumped (lekking) males than they were by isolated males. About a third of the females taken from inside leks had sperm in their spermathecae, and it is not clear if their motive for being in these areas was sexual. In pairs of males (within 15 cm of each other), the larger fly tends to be in a position farther up the branch, suggesting that larger males may control preferred territories. It seems possible that males attempting to intercept females accumulate in favorable microhabitats where females are likely to be concentrated and that leks have evolved from such clumping.

Male Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), are attracted to the synthetic compound trimedlure. Despite the common use of trimedlure in control programs, the underlying basis of male attraction remains unknown. In a series of laboratory trials, we compared the mating success of (treated) males exposed to trimedlure and (control) males not given access to trimedlure. When tested immediately after exposure, treated males mated more frequently than control males. This mating advantage was short-lived, however, and males tested as little as 24 h after exposure had no advantage over control males. When tested immediately after exposure, treated males exhibited higher levels of pheromone calling than control males. Consequently, more females were attracted to treated males than to control males in field tests.

The leaf puncturing, ovipositional and feeding behavior of Liriomyza trifolii was investigated on a preferred and non-preferred host (chrysanthemum and tomato, respectively). The sequence of leaf-puncturing behavior was stereotypic on both hosts, with a high probability of transition from one event to the next once the sequence is initiated. Two types of leaf punctures were made: a large fan-shaped puncture without an egg and tubular-shaped punctures with or without an egg. Regardless of the type of leaf puncture created, the female always backed over the puncture to feed. Therefore, all leaf punctures can be considered as feeding punctures. Fewer slow abdominal thrusts were noted for flies during oviposition compared to leaf puncturing only on chrysanthemum and tomato. The major differences noted between hosts were that L. trifolii fed for a significantly shorter period and spent less time during the leaf puncturing sequence on tomato vs. chrysanthemum. This suggests a repellent/antifeedant present in the former host which is detected through gustatory mechanisms. The deposition of an epideictic pheromone during oviposition was not detected.

The influence of female and male cues on the male searching behavior of the sheep tick, Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae), was studied under constant laboratory conditions by means of a computerized video tracking system. Males were released into an open glass arena in which one half had been exposed for 1 h to 5 freely walking unfed females or five males. The obtained track data were analyzed to reveal if male walking pattern was random or affected by cues of conspecifics left on the arena surface. The results showed that males spent significantly more time and walked a significantly longer distance in the area with female cues compared to the control area. Moreover, the walking path of males was more tortuous on the cues half than the control half. In contrast, walking behavior of males was not affected by male cues in any observed parameter. These results provide the first evidence that unfed females leave sex-specific semiochemicals on a substrate during their walk and that these cues have an effect on male searching behavior. Since this effect was not observed when female cues were 24-h old, the semiochemicals seem to either evaporate or are subject to degradation. The biological significance of these findings for mate-searching in I. ricinus males is discussed.

The mating behavior of the quasi-gregarious egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) was investigated under field conditions. Trissolcus basalis has female-biased sex ratios and is a protandrous species, with males emerging 1–2 days before females. Males competed aggressively for control of the egg mass, with one male assuming dominance and control of the egg mass, although changes in dominance occurred at least once on each egg mass observed. Typical mating behavior involved the dominant male mating his sisters immediately upon their emergence from the egg mass. These behaviors are characteristic of an inbreeding species that manifests local mate competition. However, several aspects of the mating behavior of T. basalis are inconsistent with that of an inbreeding species. Over 18% of emerging females were not mated by the dominant male upon emergence, 13% of females were not observed to be mated at all and may have left their natal site as virgins, 25% of females were mated multiple times and sometimes by multiple males, females remained near the natal site for up to several hours after emergence before emigrating, and males dispersed away from the natal site during female emergence. Trissolcus basalis may be a predominantly inbreeding species but its emergence and mating behavior suggest that low-frequency outbreeding is also likely to occur.
