Multiparasitism of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) by the solitary aphidiid parasitoids Aphidius matricariae Haliday and Ephedrus cerasicola Starý was studied in the laboratory at 22°C. Single aphids first stung by an A. matricariae female were then offered to a female of E. cerasicola 1, 2 or 3 days later. E. cerasicola oviposited without restraint in such aphids. The multiparasitized aphids were dissected 3 or 4 days after the Ephedrus parasitization or allowed to mummify.Only a single parasitoid, either egg or larva, was found in a dissected host. The relative frequency of the two species was roughly the same in dissection series as in corresponding mummification series. When E. cerasicola oviposited 1 or 2 days after A. matricariae, E. cerasicola was the intrinsically superior species. Dissection showed that the competition occurred at least one day before the Ephedrus egg hatched, and that very few eggs of A. matricariae hatched in such aphids. Apparently, the Aphidius eggs must have been killed by substances injected by the ovipositing Ephedrus female or by substances or structures connected with the Ephedrus egg itself. When E. cerasicola oviposited 3 days after A. matricariae, A. matricariae survived. Probably its 4th instar larvae devoured the eggs of E. cerasicola together with the other host contents.Interspecific competition without larvae involved has not previously been demonstrated in Aphidiidae.

Complete control of Myzus persicae on the chrysanthemum cultivar Tuneful was achieved within 2 months or less of planting using the parasite Aphidius matricariae. The success of the technique depends on introducing a small population of parasitized aphids into boxes of rooted cuttings, and the rapidity of control is determined by the ratio of aphids to parasites present at the time of introduction. The method is likely to be even more successful where cultivars less susceptible to aphids are grown.
A. matricariae cannot be used to control M. persicae if the aphids are infected with the fungus Cephalosporium aphidicola.

Model terrestrial ecosystems were set-up in the Ecotron controlled environment facility. The effects of elevated CO2 (ambient + 200 mol/mol) and temperature (ambient + 2.0°C) on plant chemistry, the abundance of the peach potato aphid Myzus persicae, and on the performance of one of its parasitoids Aphidius matricariae, were studied. Total above-ground plant biomass at the end of the experiment was not affected by elevated atmospheric CO2, nor were foliar nitrogen and carbon concentrations. Elevated temperature decreased final plant biomass while leaf nitrogen concentrations increased. Aphid abundance was enhanced by both the␣CO2 and temperature treatment. Parasitism rates remained unchanged in elevated CO2, but showed an increasing trend in conditions of elevated temperature. Our results suggest that M. persicae, an important pest of many crops, might increase its abundance under conditions of climate change.

This study was performed to investigate the age-dependent functional response of Aphidius matricariae Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) at varying densities of tobacco aphid, Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Six densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 numbers) of third instar nymphs of M. persicae nicotianae were daily exposed to one pair of 1-day-old A. matricariae until the parasitoid female died. Each host aphid density was replicated 10 times. The experiments were conducted at constant environmental conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 5% RH and 16:8h L:D photoperiod). The logistic regression model demonstrated that the functional response of A. matricariae was type III in the second day and type II in the first day and from third to the end of adult parasitoid lifetime. The handling time (Th) was lowest in the first day (0.2305 h) and highest in the sixth day (2.9296 h) of the parasitoid’s life. The searching efficiency (a) values were 0.0573, 0.0649, 0.0503, 0.0229, and 0.0077 h?1 in the first, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth days of the parasitoid’s life, respectively. Also, the b value for type III functional response was 0.0147 in the second day. The values of maximum attack rate (T/Th) ranged from 104.12 nymphs/24 h in the first day to 19.8 nymphs/24 h in the sixth day of parasitoid’s life. Based on the results, A. matricariae showed a high potential to control the population of tobacco aphid and the highest efficiency gained in the first half of the female parasitoid life.

Myzus persicae populations in Scotland were sampled during the last three months of 1976 and the individuals collected were classified into clones or groups of clones by electrophoretic analysis at three polymorphic loci. Samples from rape or mustard had a different range of clone compositions from samples from swede, cabbage or calabrese. The data provide further evidence in support of the oligogeneous population structure of this species during the period of the investigation.

Aphelinus asychis Walker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) and Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) are solitary kionobiont endoparasitoids, which can parasitize the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). We determined the influence of oviposition sequence and various time intervals (0, 24, 48, and 72 h) between two ovipositions on self‐ and conspecific discrimination and interspecific intrinsic competition between A. asychis and A. gifuensis. When offered unparasitized M. persicae and those parasitized by the other parasitoid species, the two parasitoid species oviposited more often in unparasitized hosts. Aphelinus asychis and A. gifuensis could, however, not avoid to multiparasitize hosts parasitized by the other species. Both parasitoid species had a limited interspecific discrimination ability through ovipositor insertion to detect internal cues. Aphidius gifuensis most often out‐competed A. asychis. The outcome of this interspecific competition was not influenced by oviposition sequence or time intervals between two ovipositions. Aphidius gifuensis eliminated competitors by physical combat at the first instar and probably by physiological suppression in later stages; A. asychis possibly used physiological suppression in all larval stages.

This study investigated the effect of adult associated cues of the multicolored Asian ladybird Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on the foraging behavior of the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Aphididae) with three assays: 1) whole aphid leaf-disc with H. axyridis tracks; 2) aphid leaf-disc with only half contaminated with H. axyridis tracks; 3) aphid leaf-discs without H. axyridis tracks. Foraging behavior of A. gifuensis was recorded using the Observer® XT 11 and EthoVsion® XT 12. In addition, functional responses of A. gifuensis in patches with or without H. axyridis cues were also tested. Aphidius gifuensis females preferred oviposition in arenas where no adult tracks of H. axyridis were present. However, no significant difference between functional responses of A. gifuensis foraging in plants with and without H. axyridis cues was detected. Our study suggests that H. axyridis associated cues could influence the foraging behavior and activity of A. gifuensis under laboratory conditions. On the other hand, the foraging efficiency of A. gifuensis was not significantly affected by H. axyridis walking tracks in a single plant system. Aphidius gifuensis might exhibit flexible behavioral responses to predator associated cues. The risk of intraguild interactions and the possibility of mitigating such risks for parasitoids are important components for ultimately determining the compatibility of biological control agents.

When a host is stung by a parasitoid female in the aphid-aphidiid association Myzus persiae Sulzer-Aphidius colemani Viereck, four host responses have been observed: 1) a host develops into a mummy, 2) it dies very soon after it was stung, 3) it develops a cellular immune response, 4) it shows no apparent perturbation subsequent to the sting. The ratios of the responses are clearly determined by the type, the number and the rank of the sting and also by the experience of the female. Some assumptions concerning the cause of the host response are discussed.

Abstract. The offspring of parasitoids, Aphidius colemani Viereck, reared on Brussels sprouts and emerging from Myzus persicae Sulzer on a fully defined artificial diet, show no preferences in a four-way olfactometer, either for the odour of the diet, the odour of Brussels sprouts, or the odour of two other crucifers (cabbage and Chinese cabbage). A similar lack of odour preferences is shown when the host aphids are exposed for parasitization (for 48 h) on cabbage, Chinese cabbage or wheat. However, if parasitization occurs on Brussels sprouts, a weak but statistically highly significant response to Brussels sprout odour is observed. Although as many as 30–35% of the parasitoids show no response to any odour, another 35% respond positively to the odour of Brussels sprout compared with responses to the odours of cabbage, Chinese cabbage or wheat of only approximately 10%. An analagous result is obtained when the parent parasitoids are reared on cabbage. In this case, significant positive responses of their offspring to cabbage odour occur only if the 48-h parasitization has occurred also on cabbage. However, with parasitoids from Brussels sprouts parasitizing the aphids for 48 h also on Brussels sprouts, the offspring subsequently emerging from pupae excised from the mummies show no preference for Brussels sprout odour. Thus, although the Brussels sprout cue had been experienced early in the development of the parasitoids, they only become conditioned to it when emerging from the mummy. Both male and female parasitoids respond very similarly in all experiments. It is proposed that the chemical cue (probably glucosinolates in these experiments) is most likely in the silk surrounding the parasitoid pupa, and that the mother may leave the chemical in or around the egg at oviposition, inducing chemical defences in her offspring to the secondary plant compounds that the offspring are likely to encounter.

Aphidius colemani Viereck(Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) showed a developmenttime extended by 16% when reared on Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae) ofdifferent instars on artificial diet or onaphids on Brussels sprout plants. There wasalso a small but statistically significant 2%reduction in size (in hind tibia length) ofadult females. Rearing on diet had nosignificant effect on the number of eggsfemales contained at emergence. In a secondexperiment, aphids from Brussels sprouts ininstars 2–5 were compared with aphids from diettwo days older to give comparably sized aphidsfrom both substrates. Parasitisation by A.colemani gave the same direction of results, but showed that the effects in the firstexperiment were greater than predicted from thereduction in host size alone. However, in bothexperiments effects on parasitoids ofdiet-rearing the host were small, and culturingA. colemani on diet-reared aphids wassuccessful.

Thirty-five clones of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulz., representing a wide range of host plants and geographical origins, were examined electrophoretically. Only 11 of 26 enzymes were active enough for subsequent work. Since genetic crosses are very difficult to make in the parthenogenetic M. persicae, assigning bands to loci and alleles is necessarily arbitrary. Thirty-two isozyme bands were detected. Only two of these (Est-1 and Est-3) migrated to different distances in some clones. This is a very low level of interclone variation, considering the known properties and origins of the clones. The peculiar feeding habits of aphids may perhaps partly explain the inactivity of so many enzymes in M. persicae (which are active in other insects). The scarcity of interclone variation in isozyme migration distance in M. persicae clones may be the result of its fast parthenogenetic reproduction and high migration ability of alates, combined with the effects of natural and artificial selection (e.g., by insecticides). Surviving genotypes may be rather few, each represented by numerous individuals. The only type of widespread electrophoretic variation is in the intensity of two esterase bands (Est-1 and Est-2). Five hypotheses are presented to explain this variation and discussed in view of evidence from other organisms.

Flowering plants have been widely used to enhance biological control. However, this approach has been limited to some extent by the lack of suitable flowering plant species of wide applicability, particularly for global pests. A key example is the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (GPA). It is commonly attacked by the polyphagous koinobiont aphidiidae, Aphidius colemani, which is also of global occurrence. Here, eight flowering plants were evaluated for the potential enhancement of GPA biological control using A. colemani under laboratory conditions. These included buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), alyssum (Lobularia maritima), white rocket (Diplotaxis erucoides.), wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), wild marjoram (Origanum vulgare), thyme (Origanum marjorana) and pepper mint (Mentha piperita). The effects of access to these flowers on the longevity (days), potential fecundity (number of dissected eggs) and parasitism rate for A. colemani compared with the control treatment (water) were studied. Longevity of A. colemani which had access to buckwheat was 4–5 times longer than the control and 2–3 times longer than it was in the other plant treatments; the latter did not differ significantly between each other. Potential fecundity of A. colemani was the highest when it had been provided with buckwheat flowers. Exposing A. colemani to flowering plants for longer time intervals (12 hr and 24 hr) increased the number of eggs produced compared with 6 hr. The number of parasitized aphids/female A. colemani with buckwheat flowers was the highest of all treatments; it ranged from 14 in the control to 219 with buckwheat. Further studies should be carried out under field conditions to determine the effect of a range of flowering plants on A. colemani. For example, although buckwheat was highly effective, in many climates it may be a useful component in mixtures comprising other, more robust species.

Aphidius matricariae Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a polyphagous solitary endoparasitoid, attacking more than 40 species of aphids. This parasitoid is an important commercial product of many companies that produce biological control agents. Storage at low temperature increases the shelf life of many biocontrol agents, allowing companies to provide a steady and sufficient supply of insects for biocontrol programs. In the current study, the effects of cold storage of 1-day-old host mummies with A. matricariae for various time periods (5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 days) at 5 °C on the parasitoid’s key life-history traits were investigated. Parameters assessed after storage included adult emergence rate, offspring sex ratio, adult longevity, oviposition period, fecundity, and life-table parameters (R0, r, λ, T, and DT). Our results showed that the mummies of A. matricariae could be stored at 5 °C for 5 days without loss of quality and for 10–15 days with minimal reduction in quality (e.g., some reduction in adult longevity and R0). If parasitoids were stored for >15 days, quality was more strongly affected. In conclusion, A. matricariae pupae could be stored at 5 °C for up to 15 days without significant negative post-storage effects on fitness of the parasitoid. These results could be used to improve the planning of mass rearing and mass release of A. matricariae in augmentative biological control programs.

The population dynamics of Myzus persicae were investigated in the field in a year without releases of Aphidius gifuensis (1998–1999), in a year with A. gifuensis releases (2000–2001) and several years later (2005–2007). The results showed that both high mean population densities and damage rates did not differ between 1998 and 1999, but were significantly lower in 2000–2001 and 2005–2007. Moreover, farmers also reported the decrease of M. persicae populations and attributed the declines to augmentative releases of A. gifuensis in their own fields, indicating farmers’ recognition in the effectiveness of A. gifuensis for M. persicae control. In addition, compared with the historical data on pesticide use for M. persicae control, the number of insecticide applications and cost of M. persicae control was sustained at a low level in 2007 (several years after release of A. gifuensis). This suggests that the augmentative releases of A. gifuensis could be effective and sustainable in M. persicae control.

通过设置 5种类型烟田 ,研究了栽培措施对烟田前期烟蚜Myzuspersicae(Sulzer)和烟蚜茧蜂Aphidiusgifuehsis(Ashmead)种群数量的影响。

The frequency distributions of eggs of the aphid parasite, Aphidius sonchi Marshall, offered 25, 50, 100 or 200 aphids per flowering shoot per female per day were determined for three consecutive days. The numbers of eggs within aphids were neither consistently overdispersed nor underdispersed, except at the two lower levels of host availability on the first day when the parasites laid large numbers of eggs into a small proportion of the hosts. These results suggest that female A. sonchi do not avoid ovipositing in already parasitized hosts under these conditions.

The peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) has developed resistance to pyrethroid insecticides as a result of a mechanism conferring reduced nervous system sensitivity, termed knockdown resistance (kdr). This reduced sensitivity is caused by two mutations, L1014F (kdr) and M918T (super-kdr), in the para-type voltage-gated sodium channel. We have developed a diagnostic dose bioassay to detect kdr and provide preliminary information on the genotype present. We also developed two allelic discrimination PCR assays to determine precisely the genotypes of the two mutations (L1014F and M918T) in individual M. persicae using fluorescent Taqman MGB probes. In combination with assays for elevated carboxylesterase levels and modified acetylcholinesterase (MACE), this suite of assays allows for rapid high-throughput diagnosis, in individual aphids, of the three main resistance mechanisms of practical importance in the UK.

Prior to designation as distinct species, an appellation presently in question, the tobacco aphid, Myzus nicotianae Blackman (Homoptera: Aphididae), was classified as a tobacco-feeding form of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). In this study, RAPD polymorphisms distinguished members of the Myzus persicae complex (M. persicae and M. nicotianae) from three outgroup Myzus species (M. cerasi (F.), M. hemerocallis Takahashi, and M. varians Davidson). Polymorphisms within the complex did not separate populations on the basis of host association (tobacco versus other host plants) or geographic origin (collections from the United States, Europe, and Japan). Similarly, while GC-MS analysis of cuticular hydrocarbon profiles revealed both developmental and inter-populational differences within the M. persicae complex, it did not separate populations of tobacco feeding aphids from those collected off non-tobacco hosts. Finally, with the exception of their responses to a choice between lettuce and collards, the host preference behavior of a green peach aphid population, a red tobacco aphid population, and a green tobacco aphid population was indistinguishable in host preference experiments. These results add to a growing body of evidence suggesting M. nicotianae and M. persicae are conspecific.

The peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) can resist a wide range of insecticides, but until recently (1990) the only mechanism identified was the increased production of carboxylesterases (E4 or FE4), which cause enhanced degradation and sequestration of insecticidal esters. We have now identified two forms of target-site resistance involving changes in the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and sodium channel (kdr) genes. Biochemical and DNA diagnostic methods can be used to identify all three mechanisms in individual aphids, and thereby establish their spatial distributions and temporal dynamics. Amplified genes underlie the increased production of esterases but their expression is modulated by DNA methylation. Amplification of the E4 gene is in strong linkage disequilibrium with the kdr mechanism. This may reflect strong insecticidal selection favouring aphids with multiple mechanisms, tight chromosomal linkage and/or the prominence of parthenogenesis in many M. persicae populations. The decreased fitness of resistant aphids under winter conditions may be a consequence of the altered sodium-channel gene affecting behaviour and/or the perception of external stimuli.
