Understanding the evolution of biodiversity and the function of biological systems are burning and linked questions in biology. Evolution of biodiversity begins at the level of microevolution, with the differentiation of individuals in populations. The study of this process splits into two conceptually different approaches (1) the concept of functional biology of testing hypothesis by precisely controlled and forward-directed experiments (digital and experimental evolution), and (2) the concept of a theory-based historical narrative (testing hypothesis on events in the past for their suitability to best explain the present). Here, I discuss and emphasize the benefits of the study of natural bacterial populations for a deeper understanding of prokaryotic biology. Also, I adress current problems in taxonomy at the ‘species’ level which obviously need discussion and clarification. I exemplify this with a natural model population for such studies, Bacillus simplex from “Evolution Canyon”, Israel.  相似文献

We examined the ovipositional preference and larval development of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on two common hosts in southern California, Chenopodium murale L. (Chenopodiaceae) and Apium graveolens L. (Umbelliferae) to determine if female oviposition preference is correlated with offspring performance. Greenhouse oviposition choice tests indicated that S. exigua oviposit more frequently on C. murale than on A. graveolens. However under laboratory conditions, larvae reared on C. murale had longer development times, lower relative growth rate, and lower survivorship than larvae reared on A. graveolens. larval and pupal masses were significantly greater on A. graveolens than on C. murale. Furthermore, pupal masses were significantly greater for individuals reared on A. graveolens than on C. murale. Because pupal masses and adult fecundity are positively correlated for Spodoptera spp., the fitness of S. exigua on A. graveolens is likely to be substantially higher than its fitness on C. murale. Despite better larval performance on A. graveolens, previous results from choice tests with whole plants and leaf discs indicate that the highly mobile S. exigua larvae strongly prefer C. murale over A. graveolens. Hypotheses attempting to explain this lack of correlation between larval and adult host preference versus development and survival in this system are discussed.  相似文献

Death with dementia is increasingly common, yet research on end of life with dementia and end-of-life care for such patients has been sparse. This article reviews recent studies in this area, most of which were done in US nursing homes. Research focused on five domains: prognosis, decision making, treatment, patient's health and suffering, and family's circumstances and satisfaction with care. Prognostication focused on developing risk scores for mortality within 6 months or a year, and while decision making was usually studied qualitatively, the other three domains were largely covered by a series of small, retrospective studies. Future direction in research is discussed, including the ongoing CASCADE project in Boston and the Dutch End of Life with Dementia Study (DEOLD). Both of these prospective studies in nursing home residents assess decision making, as well as factors associated with family's satisfaction and patient suffering. These studies will provide insight into interventions that are most likely to improve end of life care of patients with dementia in the respective countries and elsewhere.  相似文献

Vitamin C readily scavenges reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and may thereby prevent oxidative damage to important biological macromolecules such as DNA, lipids, and proteins. Vitamin C also reduces redox active transition metal ions in the active sites of specific biosynthetic enzymes. The interaction of vitamin C with 'free', catalytically active metal ions could contribute to oxidative damage through the production of hydroxyl and alkoxyl radicals; whether these mechanisms occur in vivo, however, is uncertain. To examine this issue, we reviewed studies that investigated the role of vitamin C, both in the presence and absence of metal ions, in oxidative DNA, lipid, and protein damage. We found compelling evidence for antioxidant protection of lipids by vitamin C in biological fluids, animals, and humans, both with and without iron cosupplementation. Although the data on protein oxidation in humans are sparse and inconclusive, the available data in animals consistently show an antioxidant role of vitamin C. The data on vitamin C and DNA oxidation in vivo are inconsistent and conflicting, but some of the discrepancies can be explained by flaws in experimental design and methodology. These and other important issues discussed here need to be addressed in future studies of the role of vitamin C in oxidative damage.  相似文献

The efficacy of antiviral drug therapy for HIV infection is limited by toxicity and viral resistance. Thus, alternative therapies need to be explored. Several gene therapeutic strategies for HIV infection have been developed, but in clinical testing therapeutically effective levels of the transgene product were not achieved. This review focuses on the determinants of therapeutic efficacy and discusses the potential and also the limits of current gene therapy approaches for HIV infection.  相似文献

1. A substantial amount of research on host‐plant selection by insect herbivores is focused around the preference–performance hypothesis (PPH). To date, the majority of studies have primarily considered insects with aboveground life cycles, overlooking insect herbivores that have both aboveground and belowground life stages, for which the PPH could be equally applicable. 2. This study investigated the factors influencing the performance of the root‐feeding vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) larvae and whether this was linked to the oviposition behaviour of the maternal adult living aboveground. 3. Maternal insects feeding aboveground reduced root biomass by 34% and increased root carbon by 4%. Larvae feeding on plants subjected to aboveground herbivory had reduced mass. Irrespective of the presence of maternal herbivory, larval mass was positively correlated with root biomass. 4. Larval mass was also reduced by conspecific larvae, previously feeding on roots (19% reduction). However, the mechanism underpinning this effect remains unclear, as in contrast to maternal herbivory aboveground, prior larval feeding did not significantly affect root biomass or root carbon concentrations. 5. Maternal insects did not distinguish between plants infested with larvae and those that were free of larvae, in terms of their egg‐laying behaviour. Conversely, maternal insects tended to lay eggs on plants with smaller root systems, a behaviour that is likely to negatively affect offspring performance. 6. The PPH is not supported by our findings for the polyphagous vine weevil feeding on the host plant raspberry (Rubus idaeus), and in fact our results suggest that there is the potential for strong parent–offspring conflict in this system.  相似文献

Chemical genomics requires continued advances in combinatorial chemistry, protein biochemistry, miniaturization, automation, and global profiling technology. Amine oxidases (AOs) oxidize polyamines (PAs) to aldehydes, simultaneously producing the removed amine moiety and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). AOs, which include copper-containing amine oxidases (CuAOs) and flavin-containing amine oxidases (PAOs), are stress-inducible enzymes involved in both PA homeostasis and H2O2 production. Here, we suggest that H2O2 derived from PAO-mediated PA catabolism has a role in inducing root xylem differentiation during plant stress responses, whereas its involvement in this event during plant development under physiological conditions is not suitably supported by the currently available data. Moreover, we show that spermidine (Spd) supply leads to a higher induction of cell death in wild-type (WT) tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants as compared to tobacco plants over-expressing maize (Zea mays) PAO (S-ZmPAO) in the cell wall, in apparent contradiction with the already reported results obtained by the analysis of the corresponding WT and S-ZmPAO Spd-untreated plants. Considering this last observation, we propose that PAs  diversely affect plant development and stress responses depending on the expression levels of AOs, which in turn may lead to different plant responses by altering the PAs/H2O2 balance.  相似文献

Human domination of the biosphere has greatly altered ecosystems, often overwhelming their capacity to provide ecosystem services critical to our survival. Yet ecological understanding of ecosystem services is quite limited. Previous work maps the supply and demand for services, assesses threats to them, and estimates economic values, but does not measure the underlying role of biodiversity in providing services. In contrast, experimental studies of biodiversity-function examine communities whose structures often differ markedly from those providing services in real landscapes. A bridge is needed between these two approaches. To develop this research agenda, I discuss critical questions and key approaches in four areas: (1) identifying the important 'ecosystem service providers'; (2) determining the various aspects of community structure that influence function in real landscapes, especially compensatory community responses that stabilize function, or non-random extinction sequences that rapidly erode it; (3) assessing key environmental factors influencing provision of services, and (4) measuring the spatio-temporal scale over which providers and services operate. I show how this research agenda can assist in developing environmental policy and natural resource management plans.  相似文献

Climate change‐related factors are predicted to affect aquatic environments in many ways. Fish physiology, immunology, behaviour, and parasite‐avoidance strategies are likely to be affected by climate change and this may lead to ecosystem‐level changes. Parasitic organisms that exploit fish are also likely to be affected by climate change, both directly and via climate effects on their hosts. It is possible that climate change will alter the prerequisites for parasite transfer, for example, through changes in phenological relationships, and/or change the direction and pressure of selection in host–parasite relationships. Our review indicates strong multifactorial effects of climate change on fish–parasite systems. Increased water temperature is, on the one hand, predicted to enhance parasite metabolism, resulting in more rapid spread of parasites; on the other hand, the occurrence of some parasites could also decrease if the optimal temperature for growth and transmission is exceeded.  相似文献

Osmolyte accumulation (OA) is frequently cited as a key putative mechanism for increasing yields of crops subjected to drought conditions. The hypothesis is that OA results in a number of benefits that sustain cell and tissue activity under water-deficit conditions. It has been proposed as an effective tolerance mechanism for water deficits, which could be enhanced in crops by traditional plant breeding, marker-assisted selection or genetic engineering, to generate drought-tolerant crops. However, field studies examining the association between OA and crop yield have tended to show no consistent benefit. The few, often-cited, investigations with positive associations were obtained under severe water deficits with extremely low yields or conditions with special water-supply scenarios when much of the benefit is plant survival. Under conditions where water deficits threaten crop survival, yields are so low that even large fractional yield gains offer little practical benefit to growers. Indeed, the often-cited benefit of turgor maintenance in cells is likely to result in crop behaviour that is exactly opposite to what is beneficial to crops. The one clear mechanism identified in this review for beneficial yield responses to OA is in the maintenance of root development in order to reach water that may be available deeper in the soil profile.  相似文献

The reproductive success of female parasitoids is dependent on their ability to accurately assess the suitability of a host for larval development. For generalist parasitoids, which utilize a broad range of species and instars as hosts, a set of assessment criteria determines whether a host is accepted or rejected. The suitability of a host, however, can only be imperfectly assessed by the female parasitoid, which can result in the selection of lesser quality hosts for oviposition. In this study we explored the disparity between host quality and host preference using the generalist koinobiotic parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and the host Aulacorthum solani (Harris) (Homoptera: Aphididae), the foxglove aphid. The second instar hosts produced the highest level of reproductive success, while third and fourth instars resulted in a substantially reduced reproductive performance. When given a choice of host instars, parasitoids preferred the older hosts for oviposition disregarding their reduced suitability for larval development. Results are discussed in context of mechanisms involved in A. ervi host selection and biases in the criteria used to assess hosts that may arise when parasitoids transfer host species between generations.  相似文献
