Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献

The pattern of maturation, body size and fecundity was examined in a population of ruffe ( Gymnocephalus cernuus L.) three times during a period of rapid growth, and eventual stabilization, following its introduction to a new habitat. When the ruffe were less common, maturing ruffe were relatively large and immature ruffe relatively small, compared with when the ruffe were abundant. Intermediate ruffe population size showed a maturation pattern intermediate between these two extremes. It is suggested that this pattern of maturation is a response of the ruffe population to changing growth opportunity induced by changing intraspecific competition. This fluctuating maturation pattern is interpreted in terms of a threshold-dependent maturation trigger, operating on the rate of accumulation of energy and a trade-off between somatic growth and gonad development. When the ruffe population was large, high intraspecific competition resulted in low opportunity for growth; only fish with the highest rate of food acquisition were able to mature in a given year–the investment in gonadal tissue reducing somatic growth. When the ruffe population was low, the high rate of energy acquisition in the population resulted in the triggering of maturation, even at small size, only the very smallest fish remaining immature. High growth opportunity allowed maturing fish to develop gonad and maintain somatic growth. The pattern of size related fecundity also changed over the three periods. When growth opportunity was low, size related fecundity was greater than when opportunity for growth was high. This suggests that maturing females faced with poor growth conditions compensated by increasing egg number for a given body size either by decreasing egg size or by increasing total investment in ovarian tissue.  相似文献

Testicular development was followed in juvenile sea trout (Salmo trutta morpha trutta L.) stocked in a river near Szczecin, Poland in 1992. Fish age was between 3 and 6.5 months post‐hatch. Fish were sampled monthly. Sex‐dependent differences in gonad structure and timing of their differentiation were observed after dissection under light microscope. In 3‐month‐old fry, when female gonads were differentiating (morphologically and cytologically), gonads of potential males remained undifferentiated. Development of a gonad into a male was primarily indicated by the formation of seminiferous tubules (lobules). In the sea trout under study, the lobules formed between the fourth and fifth month post‐hatch (July–August) (fork length >5.6 cm). There were no significant differences in body fork length between fish with and without lobules, although mean length of the former was higher. Early spermatogenesis began once the type B spermatogonia appeared. The timing of their appearance differed widely among individuals. Type B spermatogonia were found for the first time in a 5‐month‐old male (late August). Spermatocytes and cells of subsequent stages appeared in an incompletely matured 6.5‐month‐old male as ‘attempted spermatogenesis’ (fork length = 8.8 cm). Most examined males remained immature, their germ cells not having passed the type A spermatogonium level. In 6.5‐month‐old alevins, no significant differences in fish size between individuals beginning spermatogenesis (stage II) and those at stage I were detected, although those at stage II were longer. As the male gonad structures were forming, the quantitative gonad parameters were gradually increasing, even when referring to the unit area; only the gonocyte size gradually decreased. The commonly applied classification systems of fish gonad maturity divide the maturation process into certain stages. However, the scales do not entirely reflect the continuity of the maturation process. Based on light microscope observations, the paper describes a comprehensive pattern of testicular transformations during maturation. The study was carried out on precocious underyearling and 1-year-old males of sea trout (Salmo trutta m. trutta L.), 1-year-old males of salmon (Salmo salar L.), and males of brown trout (Salmo trutta m. fario L.) aged from 7 months to 4 years. A total of 821 gonads collected during all seasons of the year were examined. The fish were fixed in Bouin's fluid. Histological slides of the mid-part of the gonad were made using the standard paraffin technique. The 3-6 microm sections were stained with Heidenhain haematoxylin. Histological changes of testes during maturation were similar in the three species studied. Immature and resting gonads contained type A spermatogonia in lobules only. The appearance of cystic structures containing type B spermatogonia in the lobules signalled the beginning of the sexual cycle in male gonads. Type B spermatogonia underwent synchronous mitotic divisions resulting in an increase in the total number of spermatogonia. As the spermatogenesis continued, the gonads showed a gradual increase in the number of cysts containing cells at all the spermatogenetic stages: type B spermatogonia, primary and secondary spermatocytes, spermatids, and spermatozoa. The well-formed spermatozoa were released to the lobule lumen once the Sertoli cells and spermatozoa connections broke up and the cyst disappeared. This was a continuous process observed throughout the spawning season. The spermatozoa were moved to the efferent duct. While some of the germ cells were completing spermatogenesis, the lobules contained less and less cysts with type B spermatogonia, primary and secondary spermatocytes, and spermatids; eventually all the cells completed spermatogenesis. At the end of maturation, vacuoles, up to 18.9 microm in final diameter (brown trout), appeared in the Sertoli cells. The vacuoles were visible in the lobule wall epithelium for a prolonged period of time. In most salmonid individuals examined, the reproductive cycles were observed to overlap. In some fish, the preparation for another cycle began very early, i.e., at the and of preceding spermatogenesis, which had not been observed before. Maturing degree-days, gonadal histology, and changes in serum sex steroids (progesterone, P; testosterone, T; and 17β-estradiol, E2) were examined in maturing and mature spring migrant Caspian lamprey Caspiomyzon wagneri (Kessler, 1870) in the Shirud River (southern Caspian Sea). Blood and gonad samples were collected from ten fish when they first entered the river (maturing stage) and from ten fish that showed spawning readiness after being held in cages in the river (mature stage). The maturing degree-days of Caspian lamprey from the start of upstream migration to maturation was 208–470°C.day. Serum P and E2 concentrations in maturing females were significantly higher than in maturing males, but in the mature stage, serum P and E2 concentrations of females were lower than males. In both stages, there were no differences in serum concentration of T between females and males. In both males and females, P increased significantly with maturation; T levels likewise appeared to increase, but the difference was not significant. E2 increased significantly with maturation in males, but females showed a significant decrease. Maturing females had similar stage gonads with the germinal vesicle in the polar position. Maturing males had testes that primarily contained secondary spermatocytes with an occasional occurrence of spermatozoa. These results suggest that males mature earlier than females, which is a pattern similar to that found in the sea lamprey.  相似文献

Some observations on the biology of Mastacembelus armatus (Lacepède) from Muzaffarnagar (U.P., India) have been made during the period July 1966 to June 1969. At a particular stage of maturity of the fish there is a close relationship between the gonad weight and the body weight which helps in determining the breeding period of the fish. Both male and female fishes mature simultaneously. The gonad weight influences the relative condition, while the visceral weight does not exert any significant effect on it. The development of the female gonads greatly affect the curve of relative condition, more than the development of male gonads, though the curve for male fish also shows a steady rise and fall in the seasonal variations of the relative condition. Seasonal fluctuations in relative condition correspond to its spawning season. In M. armatus , the presence of two peaks in the curve confirm two breeding seasons. The present studies have also elucidated to a certain extent the important aspect of the maturation and spawning habits of M. armatus in North India. The fish has two breeding seasons of short duration during June and July and again in November. The mature ovaries of each season contain slight maturing ova of next season along with mature ova of the present season. The entire stock of ova measuring 0.16 mm and above are shed during spawning.  相似文献

During three consequtive years, 1975–1977, Individually tagged Baltic salmon Salmo salar smolts of sexually immature male and female fish (n = 35027, mean size: 15.2 cm) and precocious males (n = 6518, mean size: 14.2 cm) were released into Umeälven (Ume river), northern Sweden. Rate of survival (% captured adults) based on 3714 recoveries was significantly higher (p < 0.01) for smolts from immature fish (10.2%) than those from smolts of early maturing males, i.e. precocious males (2.2%). corresponding to an average yield of 474 and 85 kg per KHX) smolts released, respectively. Gain in survival was on average 2.5% and 1.4% per cm increase in smolt size for immature smolts and smolts from precocious males, respectively. The poor survival among smolts of precocious males is suggested to he related to an interaction between sexual maturation and smolting linked to incompletely resorbed gonads leading to a non migratory behaviour. These non migratory males are then suggested to suffer heavily by predation in the river.
The two smolt categories had a similar growth pattern in sea. Smolts from precocious males did not mature early in sea indicating no relation to grisling, i.e. sexually maturing fish returning after first winter in sea. Adult weight of fish returning the fourth summer after release was related to smolt size (P < 0.05). Our Response Surface Model (RSA) predicted that large smolts (19.0 cm) had a higher specific growth rate over their life-span compared to small smolts (<15.0 cm), 0.86% d−1 and 0.46% d−1, respectively. Large smolts (19.0 cm) attained a size of 3.0 kg during their second winter in sea about six months earlier than small smolts (13.0 cm). The paper discusses alternative release strategies that can be employed if the ultimate goal of salmon stocking is maximizing yield.  相似文献

Two Dascyllus reticulatus populations from Madang, Papua New Guinea exhibited diandric protogyny. In both populations, gonads began as undifferentiated, and then developed oocytes in the primary growth stage and an ovarian lumen. From this ovarian state or from more developed ovaries containing oocytes beyond the primary‐growth stage, some gonads developed into testes. The first sign of testicular development was degeneration of oocytes, degeneration of oocytes in the primary growth stage in ovarian gonads and degeneration of oocytes of all growth stages present including the primary growth stage in ovaries, which was then followed by development of spermatogenic tissue. In both populations, most of the fish that had gonads with degenerating oocytes were smaller than the smallest mature females, indicating that development towards testes was mostly initiated in immature gonads containing only pre‐vitellogenic oocytes. On some occasions, however, females as large as other mature females also had gonads with degenerating oocytes, suggesting that development towards testes may have occurred in mature ovaries as well. This latter notion is further strengthened by the discovery of a fish having a gonad that contained both degenerating vitellogenic oocytes and developing spermatogenic tissue. Taken together, these results suggest that D. reticulatus can exhibit diandric protogyny, because testes in D. reticulatus developed from juvenile gonads as well as from mature ovaries.  相似文献

Histology of gonads of Oreochromis karongae was undertaken to study internal cell characteristics during maturation. This study was necessitated by low spawning output of the fish species. Several oocyte stages, ranging from primary forms to vitellogenesis, suggest that the maturation was generally succesfully attained in the fish ponds. Pre‐vitellogenesis oocytes (oogonia to perinuclear stage) and more advanced vitellogenesis (primary vesicle to tertiary yolk vesicle) oocyte stages were all found in the same gonads. However, there were some discontinuities observed during stages 3 and 4, suggesting selective maturation. Failure of gonads to mature normally is attributed to an ecological crunch that was in a previous study associated with environmental factors. Atretic oocytes were also recorded in the same gonads, a sign that some oocytes failed to mature normally. This indicates insufficient stimuli for normal gonad development. Several stages of spermatogenesis (spermatocytes, spermatid and spermatozoa) were also found in the same gonads. Selective recrudescence was more pronounced in O. karongae because generally less oocytes attained final maturation stages compared to Oreochromis niloticus and other tilapias. This could be the main reason for low natural breeding that has been observed in both wild and captive stocks, and led to the abandonment of its use in aquaculture. This study corroborates findings of previous studies that depended solely on external gonad characteristics. Histology provides conclusive evidence from internal cell characteristics that other techniques are unable to show.  相似文献

Abnormalities were detected in the testes of maturing male Atlantic salmon parr from one hatchery. They consisted of a focal necrosis of germ tissue at the time of rapid cell division when normal germ cells were reaching the spermatid stage of development. Some males taken from sea water which had matured previously in fresh water, had fibrous capsules in their testes as remnants of the freshwater lesion but there were no new abnormalities developing in the gonads. The same stock of fish showed other abnormalities and the authors speculate on a possible connection between these changes and the gonad lesion.  相似文献

Conformational changes that occur in chromatin from developing germ cells of the echinoderm Holothuria tubulosa have been probed with micrococcal nuclease. The results indicate that the extent of DNA degradation to acid-soluble nucleotides is highest in chromatin at the early stages of gonad growth, being drastically subdued in the mature sperm cell. Production of nucleosomal particles also varies with development, involving at least 70% of the chromatin at the final stage of maturation, whereas in immature germ cells it remains much lower. In contrast, electrophoretic analysis for DNA size has shown that the average nucleosome repeat length, about 227 base pairs, does not change throughout the maturation process. However, kinetics of the enzyme reaction have revealed that, although brief digestion of chromatin from both immature gonads and sperm yields comparable series of higher oligomers, extensive digest patterns differ widely. Sperm chromatin, highly protected, releases a 275 base pair intermediate fragment, wholly absent in immature gonads. The 145 base pair core released in both chromatins is not further digested in sperm. In comparison to sperm chromatin, that of immature germ cells is much more susceptible to fragmentation, yielding the usual set of smaller subnucleosomal fragments. These data suggest the induction of differential accessibilities of chromatin DNA with maturation, which is not accompanied by displacement of the histone complement. The histone variants present in this species may well be instrumental in the process.  相似文献

Diodon holocanthus is an important economic and ecological species of the demersal fish community, caught as bycatch from local shrimp fishery. The reproductive biology of this long-spine porcupinefish has not yet been described, and reproductive season, the sex ratio, length distribution, length at first gonad maturity, and the gonad macro and microscopic features are described. A total of 400 organisms, ranging from 5.0 to 40.3 cm (average 18.4 cm) total length, were caught from the continental shelf of the Central Mexican Pacific, from December 1995 and December 1998. Sex ratio was 1:0.86 females to males (n = 253). The length at which 50% of the individuals showed maturing gonads was 19.7 cm for females and 20.1 cm for males. Length of the smallest organism with ripe gonads was 12.2 cm for females and 13 cm for males. Four gonadal maturation stages were found in both sexes, and five oocyte development phases were identified. The oocyte development pattern is of asynchronous type, which means the species can reproduce several times a year. Testicle development is lobular type, as in most teleost fishes. Monthly mean values of the gonad-somatic index suggest the reproduction activity peaks in June, and September-December.  相似文献

This study investigated maturation and spawning of Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides in the Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) fishery on the Kerguelen Plateau in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean based on gonads and otoliths collected between 2004 and 2015 and using histological analyses and calibration of macroscopic staging criteria. Dissostichus eleginoides at HIMI spawn throughout the austral late autumn and winter months of May–August and spawning activity is concentrated on slopes along the west and south of the plateau around HIMI at depths of 1500–1900 m. Comparison between histological analyses and macroscopic gonad staging indicated that many fish that had spawned, as indicated by the presence of post‐ovulatory follicles, returned to a resting stage which was macroscopically indistinguishable from maturing fish. Furthermore, the occurrence of females of all size classes with low gonado‐somatic index and low macroscopic gonad stage during the spawning season suggested that a proportion of mature females did not spawn every year. Age‐at‐maturity estimates, based on the assumption that fish of macroscopic stages ≥2 were mature, decreased between the 2004–2009 and 2010–2015 periods for both sexes. The magnitude of this temporal variation in age at maturity, however, varied between gear types and fishing depths and variable sampling regimes probably influenced these variations. This study highlights the importance of correct interpretation of macroscopic gonad stages and understanding the influence of fishery operations on estimations of life‐history parameters.  相似文献

Gonadogenesis of zebrafish Danio rerio was investigated by means of light microscopy to test the suitability of gonad histology as an endpoint in hazard assessment of endocrine‐active compounds. At age 2 weeks post‐fertilization (pf), primordial germ cells were found in a dorsocaudal position in the body cavity. At 4 weeks pf, the majority of the fish (86%) possessed paired gonads with meiotic germ cells; these gonads represented presumptive ovaries. At week 5 pf, 87% of the fish examined had ovaries with perinucleolar oocytes. Further development of the gonads in female zebrafish up to week 11 pf was characterized by an increase in gonad size as well as in the number and size of perinucleolar oocytes. Starting with week 5, some fish showed alterations of gonad morphology, including a decrease in the number and size of the oocytes, an enhanced basophilia and irregular shape of the oocytes, and finally their degeneration into residual bodies. With the decline in oocyte number, stromal cells became more numerous and they infiltrated the gonadal matrix. In several 7 week‐old zebrafish with altered gonadal morphology, enhanced numbers of gonial cells arranged in cyst‐like groups appeared. These gonads were interpreted as presumptive testes. In one fish out of 32 individuals examined, spermatocytes were detected, in addition to the gonial cells. During the subsequent weeks, the percentage of fish showing early testes with spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids increased and reached 40% at 11 weeks pf. The sequence of gonadal alterations taking place in some of the individuals from week 5 pf onwards was interpreted to reflect the transition of protogynic ovaries into testes. The developmental pattern described identifies zebrafish to be a juvenile hermaphrodite. The results of this study are of relevance for the use of gonadal histopathology as endpoint in endocrine disruption testing, particularly in order to avoid false diagnoses of ‘intersex gonads’ in zebrafish.  相似文献

In three phenotypic forms (parrs, trout form, and kumzha form) of fish-farm Black Sea trout (age 1+) and wild Black Sea trout (age 1+ and 2+), Salmo trutta labrax, inhabiting the basin of the Mzymta River, the content of monoamines (dopamine, noradrenalin, and serotonin) and of their metabolites (3,4-dihydroxyindolacetic acid, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl glycol, and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid) was investigated in brain regions (forebrain, optic tectum, brainstem, hypothalamus, and hypophysis) and the level of cortisol, thyroxin, triiodothyronine, growth hormone, and adrenocorticotropic hormone was investigated in blood. Data on length and weight of fish body and maturation stage of gonads are indicated. The hormonal level differs in the fish of different phenotypic forms. It is the highest in specimens of the kumzha form which completed parr-smolt transformation. Among wild fish, numerous mature females at age 1+ were found which indicated the presence of a dwarf form of the Black Sea trout in the Caucasus in the Mzymta River.  相似文献

The history of the germ cells is traced from the time of hatching. The germ cells are larger in size and have faintly staining cytoplasm, clear cell outline and a distinct nucleus. They migrate by ameboid movement to reach the genital ridge and aggregate to lie against the gonadal epithelium prior to the formation of gonads. The germ cells are distributed along the gonad primordia. The period of sex differentiation occurs between the 5.4 mm to 12 mm stage. The testis formation is recognized by the presence of germ cell nests and the sperm duct cord. The formation of the ovary is noted by the enlargement of the germ cells of uniform size and the development of the ovarian cavity. The ovaries are described in four stages ranging from 21 mm to 135 mm fish. At 21 mm stage the ovarian cavity is continuous but is obliterated at 35 mm stage due to the projection of the ovigerous lamellae. The common opening for both the ovaries develops at 35 mm stage. The testes are described in four stages ranging from 23 mm to 135 mm fish. They differentiate more slowly and the first maturation division is seen at 90 mm stage.  相似文献

The rat embryo (13 and 15 days of development) gonad germs of both sex, as well as isolated primary germ cells (PGC) have been transplanted into testes of mature animals of the same strain and investigated for 1.5 years. The isolated PGC are not able for further development and subjected to reduction. The gonad germs form analogues of the gonads with formation of definitive gonadal cells in 30 days. Further, degeneration of mature gonadal cells takes place. For realization of PGC ++cyto-differential processes and their stage-to-stage transformation into mature gametes certain interactions are necessary with concrete surrounding tissues that are at a strictly synchronized (with germ cells) stages of development.  相似文献

Pale anemones (Aiptasia pallida) coexist with dinoflagellates (primarily Symbiodinium minutum) in a mutualistic relationship. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of these symbionts in gonad development of anemone hosts. Symbiotic and aposymbiotic anemones were subjected to light cycles that induced gametogenesis. These anemones were then sampled weekly for nine weeks, and gonad development was analyzed histologically. Anemone size was measured as mean body column diameter, and oocytes or sperm follicles were counted for each anemone. Generalized linear models were used to evaluate the influence of body size and symbiotic status on whether gonads were present and on the number of oocytes or sperm follicles produced. Body size predicted whether gonads were present, with larger anemones being more likely than smaller anemones to develop gonads. Both body size and symbiotic status predicted gonad size, such that larger and symbiotic anemones produced more oocytes and sperm follicles than smaller and aposymbiotic anemones. Overall, only 22 % of aposymbiotic females produced oocytes, whereas 63 % of symbiotic females produced oocytes. Similarly, 6 % of aposymbiotic males produced sperm follicles, whereas 60 % of symbiotic males produced sperm follicles. Thus, while gonads were present in 62 % of symbiotic anemones, they were present in only 11 % of aposymbiotic anemones. These results indicate that dinoflagellate symbionts influence gonad development and thus sexual maturation in both female and male Aiptasia pallida anemones. This finding substantiates and expands our current understanding of the importance of symbionts in the development and physiology of cnidarian hosts.  相似文献

Age of fish at maturation depends on the species and environmental factors but, in general, investment in growth is prioritized until the first sexual maturity, after which a considerable and increasing proportion of resources are used for reproduction. The present study summarizes for the first the key elements of the maturation of European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) young of the year (YoY) in the North-eastern Gulf of Riga (the Baltic Sea). Prior to the changes in climatic conditions and collapse of smelt fishery in the 1990s in the Gulf of Riga, smelt attained sexual maturity at the age of 3–4 years. We found a substantial share (22%) of YoY smelt with maturing gonads after the collapse of the smelt fisheries. Maturing individuals had a significantly higher weight, length and condition factor than immature YOY, indicating the importance of individual growth rates in the maturation process. The proportion of maturing YoY individuals increased with fish size. We discuss the factors behind prioritizing reproduction overgrowth in early life and its implications for the smelt population dynamics.  相似文献
