Leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis) experience wide fluctuations in environmental conditions and unpredictable availability of food and water within the Nama-Karoo biome. It was hypothesised that tortoises fed two diets differing in preformed water and fibre content would have differing food intake, gut transit rate, assimilation efficiency, faecal and urinary water loss, and urine concentrations. It was predicted that tortoises fed these contrasting diets would attempt to maintain energy and water balance by altering their digestive parameters. Leopard tortoises fed lucerne (Medicago sativa) had a low food intake coupled with long gut transit times, which resulted in the lowest amount of faecal energy and faecal water lost. Tortoises fed tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) had higher food intake and faster gut transit times, but more energy and water was lost in the faeces. However, daily energy assimilated and assimilation efficiency were comparable between tortoises fed the two diets. Urine osmolality was significantly different between tortoises on the two diets. Results indicate that leopard tortoises can adjust parameters such as transit rate, food intake, water loss and urine osmolality to maintain body mass, water and energy balance in response to a high fibre, low water content and a low fibre, high water content diet. This study suggests that this digestive flexibility allows leopard tortoises in the wild to take advantage of unpredictable food and water resources.  相似文献

Animal studies indicate that monosodium glutamate (MSG) can induce hypothalamic lesions and leptin resistance, possibly influencing energy balance, leading to overweight. This study examines the association between MSG intake and overweight in humans. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 752 healthy Chinese (48.7% women), aged 40-59 years, randomly sampled from three rural villages in north and south China. The great majority of participants prepared their foods at home, without use of commercially processed foods. Diet was assessed with four in-depth multipass 24-h recalls. Participants were asked to demonstrate MSG amounts added in food preparation. Amounts shaken out were weighed by trained interviewers. Overweight was defined as BMI > or =25.0 or > or =23.0 kg/m(2)(based on World Health Organization recommendations for Asian populations). Eighty-two percent of participants were MSG users. Average intake was 0.33 g/day (s.d. = 0.40). With adjustment for potential confounders including physical activity and total energy intake, MSG intake was positively related to BMI. Prevalence of overweight was significantly higher in MSG users than nonusers. For users in the highest tertile of MSG intake compared to nonusers, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios of overweight (BMI > or =23.0 and > or =25.0) were 2.10 (95% confidence interval, 1.13-3.90, P for trend across four MSG categories = 0.03) and 2.75 (95% confidence interval, 1.28-5.95, P = 0.04). This research provides data that MSG intake may be associated with increased risk of overweight independent of physical activity and total energy intake in humans.  相似文献

Digestion, especially of plant material, is a time-dependent process. In herbivores, an increase in food intake is usually correlated to an acceleration of ingesta passage through the gut, and could hence depress digestive efficiency. Therefore, the nature of the relationship between food intake and ingesta passage (i.e. whether the increase in ingesta passage due to the increase in food intake is mild or drastic) should determine the flexibility of the feeding strategy of herbivore and omnivore species. Using two megaherbivore groups, the elephants and the hippopotamuses, as examples from opposing ends of the range of potential adaptations to this problem, we demonstrate that the species-specific relationship of food intake and ingesta passage can precisely predict feeding ecology and activity budgets. In hippos, the distinct acceleration in ingesta passage due to increased intake limits the additional energy gained from eating more forage, and explains the comparatively low food intake and short feeding times generally observed in these animals. In elephants, increased food intake only leads to a very moderate increase of ingesta passage, thus theoretically allowing to optimize energy gain by eating more, which is in accord with the high food intake and long feeding times observed in these animals. We suggest that the characterization of the intake-passage relationship in herbi- and omnivorous species is of much higher ecological relevance than the determination of a supposedly species-specific "passage time/mean retention time".  相似文献

The endocannabinoids have been recognized as an important system involved in the regulation of energy balance. Rimonabant (SR141716), a selective inverse agonist of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1), has been shown to cause weight loss. However, its suppressive impact on food intake is transient, indicating a likely additional effect on energy expenditure. To examine the effects of rimonabant on components of energy balance, we administered rimonabant or its vehicle to diet-induced obese (DIO) C57BL/6 mice once daily for 30 days, by oral gavage. Rimonabant induced a persistent weight reduction and a significant decrease in body fatness across all depots. In addition to transiently reduced food intake, rimonabant-treated mice exhibited decreased apparent energy absorption efficiency (AEAE), reduced metabolizable energy intake (MEI), and increased daily energy expenditure (DEE) on days 4-6 of treatment. However, these effects on the energy budget had disappeared by days 22-24 of treatment. No chronic group differences in resting metabolic rate (RMR) or respiratory quotient (RQ) (P > 0.05) were detected. Rimonabant treatment significantly increased daily physical activity (PA) levels both acutely and chronically. The increase in PA was attributed to elevated activity during the light phase but not during the dark phase. Taken together, these data suggested that rimonabant caused a negative energy balance by acting on both energy intake and expenditure. In the short term, the effect included both reduced intake and elevated PA but the chronic effect was only on increased PA expenditure.  相似文献

Garden warblers (Sylvia borin) were subjected to starvation trials during their autumnal migratory phase in order to simulate a period of non-stop migration. Before, during and after this treatment the energy expenditure, activity, food intake and body mass of the subjects were monitored. Assimilation efficiency was constant throughout the experiments. The catabolized (during starvation) and deposited body tissue (during recovery) consisted of 73% fat. Basal metabolic rate was decreased during the starvation period and tended to a gradual increase during the recovery period. The reduced basal metabolic rate can possibly be attributed to a reduced size/function of the digestive system, which is consistent with the sub-maximal food intake immediately after resuming the supply of food to the experimental birds. The observed reductions in basal metabolic rate during starvation and activity during recovery can be viewed as adaptations contributing to a higher economization of energy supplies. The experimental birds were unable to eat large quantities of food directly after a period of starvation leading to a comparatively low, or no increase in body mass. Summary The green iguana, Iguana iguana, is herbivorous throughout life, and depends on a microbial fermentation system in the hindgut to degrade plant fiber. Because the metabolic rates of lizards are proportional to body mass raised to the 0.80 power, hatchling iguanas have 2X, and juveniles 1.4X, greater relative energy requirements (kJxg body mass-1xday-1) than full-grown adults. Growing animals also need a higher protein intake, for contruction of body tissues, than do mature animals. This study investigated how growing iguanas achieve a relatively greater nutrient intake than adults. Hatchling and juvenile iguanas do not have higher relative capacities of the digestive tract than mature iguanas, nor do they digest plant materials more effectively. Instead, growing iguanas select diets higher in digestible protein, and digest the same food 1.3X to 2X more rapidly, than adults. Young iguanas may accomplish their shorter food transit times by maintaining higher body temperatures.  相似文献

Background

Physical performance is a major determinant of health in older adults, and is related to lifestyle factors. Dietary fiber has multiple health benefits. It remains unclear whether fiber intake is independently linked to superior physical performance. We aimed to assess the association between dietary fiber and physical performance in older adults.

Methods

This was a cross-sectional study conducted with community-dwelling adults aged 55 years and older (n=2680) from the ongoing Healthy Aging Longitudinal Study (HALST) in Taiwan 2008-2010. Daily dietary fiber intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Physical performance was determined objectively by measuring gait speed, 6-minute walk distance, timed “up and go” (TUG), summary performance score, hand grip strength.

Results

Adjusting for all potential confounders, participants with higher fiber intake had significantly faster gait speed, longer 6-minute walk distance, faster TUG, higher summary performance score, and higher hand grip strength (all P <.05). Comparing with the highest quartile of fiber intake, the lowest quartile of fiber intake was significantly associated with the lowest sex-specific quartile of gait speed (adjusted OR, 2.18 in men [95% CI, 1.33-3.55] and 3.65 in women [95% CI, 2.20-6.05]), 6-minute walk distance (OR, 2.40 in men [95% CI, 1.38-4.17] and 4.32 in women [95% CI, 2.37-7.89]), TUG (OR, 2.42 in men [95% CI, 1.43-4.12] and 3.27 in women [95% CI, 1.94-5.52]), summary performance score (OR, 2.12 in men [95% CI, 1.19-3.78] and 5.47 in women [95% CI, 3.20-9.35]), and hand grip strength (OR, 2.64 in men [95% CI, 1.61-4.32] and 4.43 in women [95% CI, 2.62-7.50]).

Conclusions

Dietary fiber intake was independently associated with better physical performance.  相似文献

Comparative physiology applies methods established in domestic animal science to a wider variety of species. This can lead to improved insight into evolutionary adaptations of domestic animals, by putting domestic species into a broader context. Examples include the variety of responses to seasonally fluctuating environments, different adaptations to heat and drought, and in particular adaptations to herbivory and various herbivore niches. Herbivores generally face the challenge that a high food intake compromises digestive efficiency (by reducing ingesta retention time and time available for selective feeding and for food comminution), and a variety of digestive strategies have evolved in response. Ruminants are very successful herbivores. They benefit from potential advantages of a forestomach without being constrained in their food intake as much as other foregut fermenters, because of their peculiar reticuloruminal sorting mechanism that retains food requiring further digestion but clears the forestomach of already digested material; the same mechanism also optimises food comminution. Wild ruminants vary widely in the degree to which their rumen contents 'stratify', with little stratification in 'moose-type' ruminants (which are mostly restricted to a browse niche) and a high degree of stratification into gas, particle and fluid layers in 'cattle-type' ruminants (which are more flexible as intermediate feeders and grazers). Yet all ruminants uniformly achieve efficient selective particle retention, suggesting that functions other than particle retention played an important role in the evolution of stratification-enhancing adaptations. One interesting emerging hypothesis is that the high fluid turnover observed in 'cattle-type' ruminants - which is a prerequisite for stratification - is an adaptation that not only leads to a shift of the sorting mechanism from the reticulum to the whole reticulo-rumen, but also optimises the harvest of microbial protein from the forestomach. Although potential benefits of this adaptation have not been quantified, the evidence for convergent evolution toward stratification suggests that they must be substantial. In modern production systems, the main way in which humans influence the efficiency of energy uptake is by manipulating diet quality. Selective breeding for conversion efficiency has resulted in notable differences between wild and domestic animals. With increased knowledge on the relevance of individual factors, that is fluid throughput through the reticulo-rumen, more specific selection parameters for breeding could be defined to increase productivity of domestic ruminants by continuing certain evolutionary trajectories.  相似文献

Nutrient intakes and selected blood and urinary constituents of 16 Navy servicemen were obtained before and during a period of 113 hours of physical activity, sleep deprivation, and psychological stress, to document the dietary adaptation of physically conditioned men to an extended period of hard physical work and other stresses. Food intakes were monitored by 1-day diet records prior to and by direct observation during the period. The factorial method was used to calculate energy expenditure. Carbohydrates provided 45 and 43% of the total energy intake before and during the experiment. Protein intakes and intakes of all the vitamins and minerals studied exceeded the Recommended Dietary Allowances, both before and during the period. Total energy intake averaged 18.7 MJ.d-1 before and 24.4 MJ.d-1 during the experiment. Body weight increased significantly by 2.7 +/- 0.4 kg (mean +/- s.e.) during the experiment (p less than 0.0001). There was a significant correlation (r = 0.74; p less than 0.001) between the change in body weight and urinary sodium from before to after the experiment suggesting that increased dietary sodium may have contributed to the weight gain. A significant increase in plasma volume (11.9 +/- 3.2%; p less than 0.0003) provided further support that the observed weight gain was due to sodium intake rather than a positive energy balance. In conclusion, conditioned men increased food consumption adequately to meet increased energy demands.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine whether lifestyle factors were associated with 5‐year change in abdominal fat measured by computed tomography (CT) in the Insulin Resistance and Atherosclerosis (IRAS) Family Study. We obtained abdominal CT scans at baseline and at 5 years, from African Americans (AA) (N = 339) and Hispanic Americans (N = 775), aged 18–81 years. Visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue was measured at the L4/L5 vertebral level. Physical activity was documented by self‐report of vigorous activity and a 1‐year recall instrument. Dietary intake was assessed at follow‐up using a semi‐quantitative food frequency questionnaire referencing the previous year. Generalized linear models, accounting for family structure, were used to assess the associations between percent change in fat accumulation and smoking, physical activity, total calories, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, protein, and saturated fat intake, percent of calories from sweets, and soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber intake and participation in vigorous activity were inversely related to change in VAT, independent of change in BMI. For each 10 g increase in soluble fiber, rate of VAT accumulation decreased by 3.7% (P = 0.01). Soluble fiber was not associated with change in SAT (0.2%, P = 0.82). Moderately active participants had a 7.4% decrease in rate of VAT accumulation and a 3.6% decrease in rate of SAT accumulation versus less active participants (P = 0.003 and P = 0.01, respectively). Total energy expenditure was also inversely associated with accumulation of VAT. Soluble fiber intake and increased physical activity were related to decreased VAT accumulation over 5 years.  相似文献

自然界中食物质量常存在季节性变化,可影响小型哺乳动物的生理特征及其生存和分布。为研究高纤维(低质量)食物对栖息于贵州遵义的海南社鼠(Niviventer lotipes)能量代谢的影响,通过饲喂标准兔饲料(高纤维)或鼠饲料(低纤维)处理海南社鼠4周,实验期间测定动物的体重和能量摄入,使用开放式代谢仪测定动物的能量消耗,并在实验处理结束后解剖动物进行身体成分分析。研究发现,饲喂兔饲料的海南社鼠实验期间体重持续下降,到实验结束时为饲喂鼠饲料动物(对照组)体重的62.8%。饲喂兔饲料4周后,动物的整体基础代谢率和非颤抖性产热显著下降,分别为对照组的55.1%和63.4%。饲喂兔饲料的海南社鼠干物质摄入、消化能和消化率显著降低,分别为对照组的63.7%、38.8%和71.8%;身体成分分析显示,主要内脏器官重量以及消化道的重量和长度也显著下降。研究结果表明,饲喂高纤维的兔饲料后海南社鼠没有增加食物摄入来补偿消化率的下降,消化道形态尤其是小肠和盲肠的重量和长度没有适应性增加,虽然动物可通过降低基础代谢率和非颤抖性产热节约能量,但动物能量利用效率太低不能维持能量平衡而体重显著下降,海南社鼠对高纤维...  相似文献

Midlife women tend to gain weight with age, thus increasing risk of chronic disease. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between overweight/obesity and behavioral factors, including eating frequency, in a cross‐sectional national sample of midlife women (n = 1,099) (mean age = 49.7 years, and BMI = 27.7 kg/m2). Eating behaviors and food and nutrient intakes were based on a mailed 1‐day food record. BMI was calculated from self‐reported height and weight, and level of physical activity was assessed by self‐reported questionnaire. After exclusion of low‐energy reporters (32% of sample), eating frequency was not associated with overweight/obesity (P > 0.05) and was not different between BMI groups (normal, 5.21 ± 1.79; overweight, 5.16 ± 1.74; obese, 5.12 ± 1.68, P = 0.769). Adjusted logistic regression showed that eating frequency, snacking frequency, breakfast consumption, eating after 10 pm and consuming meals with children or other adults were not significantly associated with overweight/obesity. Total energy intake increased as eating frequency increased in all BMI groups, however, obese women had greater energy intake compared to normal weight women who consumed the same number of meals and snacks. Intake of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, dietary fiber, dairy, and added sugars also increased as eating frequency increased. While eating frequency was not associated with overweight/obesity, it was associated with energy intake. Thus, addressing total energy intake rather than eating frequency may be more appropriate to prevent weight gain among midlife women.  相似文献

In subjects who maintain a constant body mass, the increased energy expenditure induced by exercise must be compensated by a similar increase in energy intake. Since leptin has been shown to decrease food intake in animals, it can be expected that physical exercise would increase energy intake by lowering plasma leptin concentrations. This effect may be secondary either to exercise-induced negative energy balance or to other effects of exercise. To delineate the effects of moderate physical activity on plasma leptin concentrations, 11 healthy lean subjects (4 men, 7 women) were studied on three occasions over 3 days; in study 1 they consumed an isoenergetic diet (1.3 times resting energy expenditure) over 3 days with no physical activity; in study 2 the subjects received the same diet as in study 1, but they exercised twice daily during the 3 days (cycling at 60 W for 30 min); in study 3 the subjects exercised twice daily during the 3 days, and their energy intake was increased by 18% to cover the extra energy expenditure induced by the physical activity. Fasting plasma leptin concentration (measured on the morning of day 4) was unaltered by exercise [8.64 (SEM 2.22) 7.17 (SEM 1.66), 7.33 (SEM 1.72) 1 microg x l(-1) in studies 1, 2 and 3, respectively]. It was concluded that a moderate physical activity performed over a 3-day period does not alter plasma leptin concentrations, even when energy balance is slightly negative. This argues against a direct effect of physical exercise on plasma leptin concentrations, when body composition is unaltered.  相似文献

No human foragers have been recorded as living without cooking, and people who choose a 'raw-foodist' life-style experience low energy and impaired reproductive function. This suggests that cooking may be obligatory for humans. The possibility that cooking is obligatory is supported by calculations suggesting that a diet of raw food could not supply sufficient calories for a normal hunter-gatherer lifestyle. In particular, many plant foods are too fiber-rich when raw, while most raw meat appears too tough to allow easy chewing. If cooking is indeed obligatory for humans but not for other apes, this means that human biology must have adapted to the ingestion of cooked food (i.e. food that is tender and low in fiber) in ways that no longer allow efficient processing of raw foods. Cooking has been practiced for ample time to allow the evolution of such adaptations. Digestive adaptations have not been investigated in detail but may include small teeth, small hind-guts, large small intestines, a fast gut passage rate, and possibly reduced ability to detoxify. The adoption of cooking can also be expected to have had far-reaching effects on such aspects of human biology as life-history, social behavior, and evolutionary psychology. Since dietary adaptations are central to understanding species evolution, cooking appears to have been a key feature of the environment of human evolutionary adaptedness. Further investigation is therefore needed of the ways in which human digestive physiology is constrained by the need for food of relatively high caloric density compared to other great apes.  相似文献

Energy content, proximate nutrient values, passage rate, and digestive efficiency associated with various diet types and factors affecting these parameters have not been quantified for the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis). We measured energy digestive efficiency (DEff) and intestinal passage rate of three captive river otters on their regular diet (a combination of polar bear diet, cat food, and feline diet) and on test diets consisting of the constituent components of their regular diet. Gross energy, crude protein, crude fat, and crude fiber varied appreciably among diet components. Caloric DEff values were high (cat food and polar bear diet combination: 83.11%; regular diet: 86.62%; feline diet: 90.22%) indicating diets high in fat and protein permit greater energy absorption. Passage rates ranged from 167–188 minutes and were influenced by level of activity such that passage rate was more rapid at higher levels of activity. Coefficients of variation (CV) from DEff (CV=1.51) and digesta passage rates (CV=7.35) were dissimilar, indicating that a direct measure may yield a more precise estimate of absorption over digesta passage rates. To further understand energy handling by river otters on diets used in zoologic institutions and to better provide the nutrient dense diets this active species requires, additional studies quantifying energetic parameters for captive otters of various genders, ages, and reproductive conditions on other diet types are needed. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of dietary factors and exercise-associated factors on the response of IGF-I and its binding proteins (IGFBPs) during a period of increased physical activity. Twenty-nine men completed a 4-day (days 1-4) baseline period of a controlled energy balanced diet while maintaining their normal physical activity level followed by 7 days (days 5-11) of a 1,000 kcal/day increase in physical activity above their normal activity levels. Two subject groups, one sedentary (Sed, mean Vo(2peak): 39 mlxkg(-1)xmin(-1), n = 7) and one fit (FIT1, mean Vo(2peak): 56 ml.kg(-1)xmin(-1), n = 8) increased energy intake to maintain energy balance throughout the 7-day intervention. In two other fit subject groups (FIT2, n = 7 and FIT3, n = 7), energy intake remained at baseline resulting in a 1,000 kcal/day exercise-induced energy deficit. Of these, FIT2 received an adequate protein diet (0.9 g/kg), and FIT3 received a high-protein diet (1.8 g/kg). For all four groups, IGF-I, IGFBP-3, and the acid labile subunit (ALS) were significantly decreased by day 11 (27 +/- 4%, 10 +/- 2%, and 19 +/- 4%, respectively) and IGFBP-2 significantly increased by 49 +/- 21% following day 3. IGFBP-1 significantly increased only in the two negative energy balance groups, FIT2 (38 +/- 6%) and FIT3 (46 +/- 8%). Differences in initial fitness level and dietary protein intake did not alter the IGF-I system response to an acute increase in physical activity. Decreases in IGF-I were observed during a moderate increase in physical activity despite maintaining energy balance, suggesting that currently unexplained exercise-associated mechanisms, such as increased energy flux, regulate IGF-I independent of energy deficit.  相似文献

Overeating in America: association between restaurant food consumption and body fatness in healthy adult men and women ages 19 to 80. Obes Res. Purpose: To examine the association between the frequency of consuming restaurant food and body fatness in adults. Research Methods and Procedures: Usual free-living dietary intake and the frequency of consuming food from seven different restaurant types (fried chicken, burger, pizza, Chinese, Mexican, fried fish, and “other”) were assessed by food frequency questionnaire in 73 healthy men and women [ages 19 to 80, body mass index (BMI) 18 to 331. In addition, body fatness (percent weight) was determined by hydrostatic weighing, and physical activity and other lifestyle parameters were assessed by questionnaire. The relationship between the frequency of consuming restaurant food and body fatness was determined after controlling for age, sex, and other confounders by using multiple regression techniques. Results: Restaurant food consumption averaged 7.5±8.5 (Standard Deviation) timedmonth. After controlling for age and sex, the frequency of consuming restaurant food was positively associated with body fatness (partial r = 0. 36, p = 0. 003). The strength of this association did not change after controlling for education level, smoking status, and alcohol intake, but after additionally controlling for physical activity, the partial r increased to 0. 42 (p = 0. 004). Total daily intakes of energy, fat, and fiber were significantly associated with restaurant food consumption frequency (r = 0. 59, 0. 28, and ?0.45, respectively, p = 0.02 to 0.0001). Discussion: The frequency of consuming restaurant food was positively associated with increased body fatness in adults. The increasing proportion of household food income spent on food prepared away from home in the United States may therefore help explain the rising national prevalence of obesity.  相似文献

To test the validity of survey techniques for measuring diet and activity patterns of Pima Indians, sequential 24-hour recalls, a food frequency ques tionnaire (FFQ), and an activity questionnaire were compared to free-living energy expenditure. Total energy expenditure (TEE) measured by doubly labeled water was 13.27 ± 2.95 MJ/d for the 12 males (mean±SD: 35 ± 14 yr; 97 ± 35 kg; 32 + 9% body fat) and 11.67 ± 1.85 MJ/d for the 9 females (31 ± 13 yr; 106 ± 32 kg; 49 ± 6% body fat). Energy intake assessed by 24-hour recall was 13.59 ± 7.81 MJ/d for men and 9.29 ± 2.77 MJ/d for women, compared to 12.84 ± 2.85 and 9.40 ± 2.61 MJ/d for men and women, respectively, by FFQ. Both dietary methods indicated significant underreporting by women when compared to TEE. Energy intake assessed by FFQ was significantly correlated with TEE (r=0.48, p=0.03). This was true with 24-hour recall energy intake only when data from two extremely large alcohol consumers were eliminated (r=0.64, p=0.03, N=19). Although a low level of activity was apparent, the activity questionnaire produced significant correlations with measurements of energy expenditure and therefore represents an important tool for examining the relationship between physical activity and diseases.  相似文献

The FTO gene variants are the most important genetic determinants of body weight and obesity known so far, but the mechanism of their effect remains unclear. We have analyzed FTO rs17817449 variant (G>T in first intron) in 6024 adults aged 45-69 years to assess the potential mediating role of diet and physical activity. Diet was assessed by a 140-item food frequency questionnaire. Physical activity was measured by hours spent during a typical week by sport, walking and other activities outside of work requiring heavy and medium physical activity. Basal metabolic rate was calculated according Schofield formula. The FTO variant was significantly associated with body mass index (means in GG, GT and TT carriers were 28.7, 28.2 and 27.8 kg/m(2), p<0.001) and basal metabolic rate (BMR) (means in GG, GT and TT were 1603, 1588 and 1576 kcal per day, respectively, p<0.008) but it was not associated with physical activity, total energy intake or with energy intakes from fat, carbohydrates, proteins or alcohol. Results were essentially similar in men and women and the adjustment for physical activity or dietary energy intake did not reduce the effect of the FTO polymorphism. Means of BMR per kg of body weight was lowest in GG carriers (20.09, 20.21 for GT and 20.30 for TT, p<0.006) and this effect was more pronounced in females. These results suggest that the effect of the FTO rs17817449 variant on BMI in Caucasian adults is not mediated by energy intake or physical activity, but some effect on BMR per kg of body weight is possible.  相似文献

Summary The aim of this study was to examine the differences in physical activity and their contribution to differences in energy utilization in mice, selected either high or low for food intake, adjusted for body weight, which show correlated responses in lean content and metabolic rate. Simultaneous measurements of fasting metabolic rate and activity were made in lines of mice selected at either: a young age, 4-to 6-week food intake corrected for 4-week body weight; or an older age, 8- to 10-week food intake corrected for mean weight at 8 and 10 weeks of age. Correlated response in metabolic rate was found to have been accompanied by changes in locomotor activity near the ages at selection in both sets of lines. Activity, however, accounted for only a small proportion of variation in fasting heat production, generally less than 5%, although a highly positive correlation (r=0.63) between the two traits was found. It was concluded that selection for food intake adjusted for body weight has led to correlated response in physical activity. In consequence, mice selected in the upward direction expend some of the excess energy intake rather than assimilating it as body mass and are, therefore, slightly leaner than their counterparts selected in the downward direction.  相似文献
