MEDICAL TECHNICIANS—The Present Need and Training in California

A maternal welfare committee was founded in 1947 by representatives of nine hospitals in San Diego County, with the purpose of inquiring into all deaths involving maternity in order to reduce maternal mortality. At open meetings cases of such death are reviewed and a vote is taken on whether the death was preventable. Deaths of newborn children are also investigated for preventable factors.From 1947 to 1952 the maternal mortality rate has declined among residents of the county from 7.3 per the thousand live births to 2.7. It is believed that the emphasis placed on high standards of prenatal and postpartum care by the committee''s observations has greatly aided in securing this improvement.     

MEDICAL RESEARCH—The Program of the U. S. Public Health Service

Federal Government expenditures for medical research have increased apace in the last ten years. The increase in federal research funds has stimulated support from private sources; contributions from other than federal sources have doubled.More than half of medical research funds are being used by universities, hospitals, and other nonprofit institutions, and less than one-fourth by laboratories of the Federal Government.Grants-in-aid of research, fellowships and extended training are made on the advice of Advisory Councils made up of leaders in the various research fields. The previous record of research by staffs and faculties of institutions is taken into account. Special attention is given to unknown investigators and small projects.Noninterference with a scientist in the conduct of research is a basic principle of all grants. He may change the direction of his research to pursue promising leads without asking permission.Continuity of grants so that promising projects need not be abandoned at the end of a grant period is given special consideration.     

Coronary Cineangiography—Clinical Studies for Evaluation in Equivocal Cases

Coronary cineangiography was helpful in the following circumstances:1. A patient with an abnormal electrocardiogram and no evidence of coronary artery disease.2. A patient with thoracic pain in whom the diagnosis of coronary artery disease was questioned.3. A patient with intractable angina pectoris who was being studied for possible surgical therapy.4. A patient with coronary insufficiency and aortic stenosis who was being evaluated for operation on the aortic valve.     

RELEVANCE IN MEDICAL EDUCATION—Some Thoughts from a Forum

For the past several months the editors of California Medicine have conducted a forum in this journal on “Relevance for Today and Tomorrow in Medical Education.” The participants were from widely different backgrounds and represented many points of view. This statement is a distillate from published and unpublished material contributed to the forum. If it proves useful to any who may be concerned with new developments in medical education it will have served its purpose.     

DISASTER MEDICAL CARE AND SHELTER—The Federal Program

The role of the physician in event of natural disaster or overwhelming (perhaps nuclear) attack by an enemy is:To assist the layman in preparing to meet his own health needs in a disaster situation until organized health services can reach him.To prepare and plan for the provision of organized medical care when conditions permit.To extend his own capability to render medical care outside his normal specialty.To assist in the training of allied and professional health workers and laymen for specific mobilization assignments in health services.

Students of today question the relevance of much of their formal education. In medical schools the concern is particularly with the relevance of the educational experience to the professional commitment in modern society.
