Tagus estuary is one of the largest estuaries of Western Europe. With the aim of unravelling the drivers of primary production in this shallow and turbid nutrient replete estuary, we tested the hypothesis that light availability is a major factor controlling phytoplankton production. Environmental parameters, phytoplankton biomass, community composition, and photosynthetic parameters were monitored at two sites in the estuary during a complete annual cycle. Despite the fact that nutrient concentrations were always above growth-limiting values, Chl a concentrations were relatively low throughout the study period. High water column turbidity, due to riverine inputs, promoted a rapid attenuation of light and created a compressed profile with optimal photosynthetic conditions. Therefore, the phytoplankton community, dominated by small cells, such as diatoms and cryptophycean flagellates, displayed highly photosynthetic efficiency and low light-saturated photosynthetic rates as a photo-acclimation response to low light conditions year-round. Primary production rate was unimodal, peaking in the summer months. In such estuarine system, gross primary production could thus be predicted by an existing robust empirical model based on pigment standing crop (Chl a), surface irradiance (E 0) and optical depth (Z eup). Compared to other shallow estuaries, the Tagus can be classified as a low- to moderately productive estuary, being the turbidity-induced low light conditions the principal factor limiting phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

The Campbell Plateau, which covers approximately 600,000 km2at depths ranging from 0–500 m on the rises to 1500 mat the plateau edge, possibly encompasses a unique combinationof bathymetric and hydrological features. Nutrients are in good supply and do not limit primary production.Over areas deeper than 450 m chlorophyll a concentrations aregenerally low but are greater where the stability of the surfacewaters is greater. Chlorophyll a reaches maximum concentrationsin areas shallower than 500 m (e.g., Pukaki Rise and BountyPlateau). Water over the Campbell Plateau generally has low stability, the result presumably of bathymetrically induced mixing andthe turbulent meteorological regime. Phytoplankton-poor wateris apparently introduced into this area where water column stabilityis insufficient to support rapid phytoplankton growth. Shallowbathymetric features appear to confine the phytoplankton nearthe surface and enhance phytoplankton production. It is postulated that current speed and direction is responsiblefor the skewness of the relationship between bottom depth andthe distribution of chlorophyll a and differences between eachbathymetric feature.  相似文献

Primary productivity in marine waters is widely estimated by the measurements of 14C incorporation, the underwater light climate, and the absorption spectra of phytoplankton. In bio-optical models the quantum efficiency of carbon fixation derived from 14C incorporation rates, the photosynthetically absorbed radiation derived from the underwater light climate, and the phytoplankton absorption spectra are used to calculate time- and depth-integrated primary productivity. Due to the increased sensitivity of commercially available fluorometers, chlorophyll a in vivo fluorescence became a new tool to assess the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton. Since fluorescence data yield only relative photosynthetic electron transport rates, a direct conversion into absolute carbon fixation rates is not possible. Here, we report a procedure how this problem can be adressed in freshwater phytoplankton. We adapted a marine bio-optical model to the freshwater situation and tested if this model yields realistic results when applied to a hypertrophic freshwater reservoir. Comparison of primary productivity derived from 14C incorporation to primary productivity derived from Chl a fluorescence showed that the conversion of fluorescence data into carbon fixation rates is still an unsolved problem. Absolute electron transport rates calculated from fluorescence data tend to overestimate primary production. We propose that the observed differences are caused mainly by neglecting the package effect of pigments in phytoplankton cells and by non-carbon related electron flow (e.g., nitrogen fixation). On the other hand, the 14C incorporation rates can be artificially influenced by "bottle effects", especially near the water surface, where photoinhibition, photorespiration, and Mehler reaction can play a major role.  相似文献

Relationships between key phytoplankton attributes including Chl a-specific light absorption, pigment composition and concentration, photosynthesis, primary production and community structure were studied in two open shallow nutrient-poor coastal systems receiving similar amounts of sewage water. Both systems were significantly nitrogen limited. However, differences in wastewater treatment (primary vs secondary) and sewage dilution (50%) between the two systems caused a greater difference between systems than locally around the outflows. For both systems, water at the outlet had significantly lower water transparency caused by a 20% higher absorption by coloured dissolved organic matter. Nutrient concentrations were also elevated, gradually decreasing with distance north (governing current) of the outflows, causing higher abundance of nano-sized phytoplankton, higher content of carotenoid pigments, 20–50% higher Chl a-specific absorption coefficients and higher photosynthetic capacity. Although maximum rates of Chl a-normalised photosynthesis were strongly related to nitrate availability, no effects were found on the derived areal primary production or algal biomass suggesting that photosynthetic and optical parameters are more sensitive indicators of nutrient enrichment than biomass or productivity. Photophysiological characteristics of the Southern Ocean phytoplankton species Phaeocystis antarctica, Geminigera cryophila, and Chaetoceros simplex were assessed during 7 weeks of darkness and subsequent recovery after darkness at 4 and 7°C. Chlorophyll a fluorescence and maximum quantum efficiency of PSII decreased during long darkness in a species-specific manner, whereas chlorophyll a concentration remained mostly unchanged. Phaeocystis antarctica showed the strongest decline in photosynthetic fitness during darkness, which coincided with a reduced capacity to recover after darkness, suggesting a loss of functional photosystem II (PSII) reaction centers. The diatom C. simplex at 4°C showed the strongest capacity to resume photosynthesis and active growth during 7 weeks of darkness. In all species, the maintenance of photosynthetic fitness during darkness was clearly temperature dependent as shown by the stronger decline of photosynthetic fitness at 7°C compared to 4°C. Although we lack direct evidence for this, we suggest that temperature-enhanced respiration rates cause stronger depletion of energy reserves that subsequently interferes with the maintenance of photosynthetic fitness during long darkness. Therefore, the current low temperatures in the coastal Southern Ocean may aid the maintenance of photosynthetic fitness during the austral winter. Further experiments should examine to what extent the species-specific differences in dark survival are relevant for future temperature scenarios for the coastal Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Photosynthesis is one of the most important metabolic processes of algae; which is altered as a stress response. During mass cultivation of algae, temperature rise and high light are major factors that affect biomass productivity. High temperature affects photosystem II (PSII) complex irreversibly, damaging intermolecular interactions in it. However, the impact of high temperature on photosynthesis is highly variable among different algal species, depending on the prior acclimation to environmental conditions they were exposed to. The acclimation plays an important role in combating high temperature stress via regulation of photosynthetic responses. Chlorophyll a fluorescence is a highly sensitive, non‐destructive and reliable tool for such measurements of photosynthetic parameters, which provides information about algal photosynthetic performance under given conditions. To understand the effect of heat stress on the responses of high light acclimated alga Chlorella saccharophila, chlorophyll a fluorescence transients were measured after heat exposure at 40°C. Our study demonstrates that rise in temperature for short duration; during open field cultivation reversibly affects the efficiency of PSII in light acclimated alga C. saccharophila. The effects of heat stress on chlorophyll a fluorescence in this alga, grown under high light (max‐1600 μmol photons m?2 s?1) are presented here; they are used to infer changes in photosynthetic process during its exposure to heat, as well as their recovery after 72 h. We speculate that heat resistance may have been acquired due to prior exposures to high light.  相似文献

Primary production of the microphytobenthic community and carbohydrates concentrations were studied in the lagoonal system of Grado and Marano, located in the Northern Adriatic coast. Sediment samples were collected along a salinity gradient. Abundance and species composition of the microphytobenthic communities were analysed and the benthic microalgal biomass was estimated as Chlorophyll a (Chl a). Primary production of benthic diatoms was estimated using 14C-tracer. Extracellular carbohydrates were extracted from the sediment and separated in two operationally defined fractions (colloidal and EDTA-extractable). Salinity was higher in the Grado lagoon, where the benthic microalgal community was mainly composed of marine diatoms. In the Marano lagoon, which has a lower salinity, freshwater species were also found. In both lagoons, photosynthetic efficiency showed an inverse relationship with salinity and a direct relationship with the main biological variables. Photosynthetic activity was directly related to Chl a and abundance of benthic microalgae, suggesting that in the benthic system microalgal community is responsible for primary production. Overall, salinity was also influent on the microphytobenthic primary production, which was greater in the more saline Grado lagoon.  相似文献

The dilution technique was used to estimate chlorophyll and pheopigment, net and gross production as well as zooplankton grazing over a 12-month period in a coastal lagoon in Southern France. Chlorophyll a (Cha) based gross growth rates of phytoplankton ranged from undetectable in February to 2.6 day−1 in June, corresponding to 3.8 divisions per day. Cha-based grazing rates ranged from undetectable in February to 1.1 d−1 in June. The seasonal growth pattern of picoplankton was similar to that of the whole community, with a peak in July, corresponding to four divisions per day. Grazing processes represented from 20 to 150% of the phytoplankton daily growth, and the grazing pressure was stronger on small phytoplankton cells than on larger cells. Gross growth rates of phytoplankton were related to zooplankton grazing rates, and both were related to water temperature. Mesozooplankton which escaped sampling or oysters had to be also invoked as additional sinks for the primary production. In the fall, pheopigment concentrations greater than chlorophyll concentrations coincided with high ammonium levels in the water column. Pheopigment a production rates were highly correlated to chlorophyll -based microzooplankton grazing rates. The pheopigment a to chlorophyll a ratio was correlated with ammonium concentrations and could be used an index of the balance between ammonium supply (degradation) and demand (uptake by phytoplankton). In addition, pheopigment degradation rates in absence of grazing could be related to irradiance, indicating photo-degradation of these compounds.  相似文献

The Yolo Bypass, a large, managed floodplain that discharges to the headwaters of the San Francisco Estuary, was studied before, during, and after a single, month-long inundation by the Sacramento River in winter and spring 2000. The primary objective was to identify hydrologic conditions and other factors that enhance production of phytoplankton biomass in the floodplain waters. Recent reductions in phytoplankton have limited secondary production in the river and estuary, and increased phytoplankton biomass is a restoration objective for this system. Chlorophyll a was used as a measure of phytoplankton biomass in this study. Chlorophyll a concentrations were low (<4 μg l?1) during inundation by the river when flow through the floodplain was high, but concentrations rapidly increased as river inflow decreased and the floodplain drained. Therefore, hydrologic conditions in the weeks following inundation by river inflow appeared most important for producing phytoplankton biomass in the floodplain. Discharges from local streams were important sources of water to the floodplain before and after inundation by the river, and they supplied dissolved inorganic nutrients while chlorophyll a was increasing. Discharge from the floodplain was enriched in chlorophyll a relative to downstream locations in the river and estuary during the initial draining and later when local stream inflows produced brief discharge pulses. Based on the observation that phytoplankton biomass peaks during drainage events, we suggest that phytoplankton production in the floodplain and biomass transport to downstream locations would be higher in years with multiple inundation and draining sequences.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns in primary productivity and algal biomass in subtropical Florida lakes along increasing gradients of both dissolved organic color and phytoplankton biomass are presented. Chlorophyll a concentrations and gross primary productivity generally reached maxima during the summer and were most depressed in winter months, regardless of color or trophic classification. Primary productivity was more strongly correlated with chlorophyll a, nutrient concentrations and water clarity in clearwater (< 75 Pt units) than in colored (> 75 Pt units) systems. Amplitudes in algal biomass were considerably smaller than temperate lakes. Variability in primary production in Florida lakes was intermediate to patterns in the temperate zone and tropics, but was more closely aligned to northern latitudes. Within the Florida peninsula, variability of primary productivity decreased from north to south and corresponded to latitudinal gradients in climatic regimes.  相似文献

A large ultra-oligotrophic Antarctic freshwater lake, Crooked Lake, was investigated between January 1993 and November 1993. The water column supported a small phytoplankton community limited by temperature, nutrient availability and, seasonally, by low photosynthetically active radiation. Chlorophyll a concentrations were consistently low (<1 g l−1) and showed no obvious seasonal patterns. Production rates were low, ranging from non-detectable to 0.56 g C l−1 h−1, with highest rates generally occurring towards the end of the austral winter and in spring. The pattern of carbon fixation indicated that the phytoplankton was adapted to low light levels. Chlorophyll a specific photosynthetic rates (assimilation numbers) ranged from non-detectable to 1.27 gC (g chlorophyll a)−1 h−1. Partitioning of photosynthetic products revealed carbon incorporation principally into storage products such as lipids at high light fluxes with increasing protein synthesis at depth. With little allochthonous input the data suggest that lake dynamics in this Antarctic system are driven by phytoplankton activity. Received: 21 February 1997 / Accepted: 18 May 1997  相似文献

Nutrient limitation of the primary production of phytoplankton at some stations in southern and central Lake Baikal was studied by nutrient enrichment experiments in August 2002. Chlorophyll (Chl.) a concentrations ranged from 0.7 to 5.8μgl−1. Inorganic nutrient concentrations were low: soluble reactive phosphorus ranged from 0.05 to 0.20μmoll−1, ammonia from 0.21 to 0.41μmoll−1, and nitrite plus nitrate from 0.33 to 0.37μmoll−1. In the five enrichment experiments, phosphate spikes and phosphate plus nitrate spikes always stimulated primary production. Nitrate spikes also stimulated primary production in four of the experiments. Significant differences were detected between the controls and phosphate spikes and between the controls and phosphate plus nitrate spikes. Thus, the first limiting nutrient is thought to be phosphorus, but once phosphorus is supplied to the surface water, the limiting nutrient will quickly shift from phosphorus to nitrogen.  相似文献

Variations in chlorophyll a concentration and in qualitative and quantitative counts of Nile phytoplankton were followed at Assiut from September 1980 to September 1982. Chlorophyll a concentrations usually correlated well with phytoplankton density. The total phytoplankton exhibited higher counts in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. While diatoms exhibited the highest counts, green algae contributed more genera to the phytoplankton community.  相似文献

Summary Kalancho? uniflora was grown in the glasshouse with and without shading. Chlorophyll content, area/FW ratio and specific leaf area were higher in leaves of shaded as compared to unshaded plants. Light saturation curves and continuous gas exchange measurements showed that the apparent quantum yield and the light-saturated photosynthetic rate were higher in shaded plants. Shaded plants had lower “mesophyll resistances” than unshaded plants, indicating that the different photosynthetic capacities reflected different contents of ribulose biphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase. Highlight treatment of plants grown in the shade resulted in a decreased photosynthetic efficiency, showing that these plants were sensitive to photoinhibition. However, dry matter production was higher in unshaded than in shaded plants. Obviously the difference in irradiance between the two growth regimes did more than offset the differences in photosynthetic efficiency. Applying additional nutrients did not alter the effects of high PFDs. The results are discussed in respect to photosynthetic performence and plant distribution in the epiphytic habitat.  相似文献

During summer 2008, as part of the Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study, we measured phytoplankton photosynthetic parameters to understand regional patterns in primary productivity, including the degree and timescale of photoacclimation and how variability in environmental conditions influences this response. Photosynthesis–irradiance measurements were taken at 15 sites primarily from the depth of the subsurface chlorophyll a (Chl a) maximum (SCM) within the Beaufort Sea flaw lead polynya. The physiological response of phytoplankton to a range of light levels was used to assess maximum rates of carbon (C) fixation (P m*), photosynthetic efficiency (α *), photoacclimation (E k), and photoinhibition (β *). SCM samples taken along a transect from under ice into open water exhibited a >3-fold increase in α * and P m*, showing these parameters can vary substantially over relatively small spatial scales, primarily in response to changes in the ambient light field. Algae were able to maintain relatively high rates of C fixation despite low light at the SCM, particularly in the large (>5 μm) size fraction at open water sites. This may substantially impact biogenic C drawdown if species composition shifts in response to future climate change. Our results suggest that phytoplankton in this region are well acclimated to existing environmental conditions, including sea ice cover, low light, and nutrient pulses. Furthermore, this photoacclimatory response can be rapid and keep pace with a developing SCM, as phytoplankton maintain photosynthetic rates and efficiencies in a narrow “shade-acclimated” range.  相似文献

Chlorophyll a variable fluorescence and oxygen evolution were measured in microalgae Chlorella and its mutant MS700, which was mutated by nuclear radiation with an increased biomass yield. The mutant MS700 showed an improvement in photosynthetic characteristics under various CO2 concentrations. Results showed that chlorophyll-based flash oxygen yield was 104% higher in MS700 than in the wild type, indicating more available electron acceptors in the plastoquinone pool and a higher light to chemical energy conversion efficiency. The higher chlorophyll a variable fluorescence at the end of PQ pool-regulated phase implied a more robust mechanism for consumption of electrons generated in PSII, indicating a more efficient downstream process. Monitoring of CO2 fixation in the Calvin cycle showed that the mutant had a 27.7% higher capability of incorporating its dissolved inorganic carbon. The oxygen evolution rate was 31.4% higher in MS700, which also indicated a higher CO2 fixation rate. These results consistently demonstrated carbon fixation efficiency in the mutant MS700, resulting in the higher biomass yield.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal variability of phytoplankton abundance (in terms of chlorophyll a and cell number), inorganic nitrogen, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and light availability was determined throughout one year in the Tagus estuary, Portugal. Chlorophyll a concentrations showed a strong seasonal variation with values ranging from 1 to 32 μg l?1(average 5.4 μg l?1). Chlorophyll patterns were unimodal for sites 1, 2, and 3 and bimodal for site 4. Diatoms and cryptophytes were, throughout the year, the dominant groups in this shallow and unstratified estuarine system. Nitrate concentrations were seasonally related to river flow and ammonium concentrations spatially related to sources of sewage input. Lower river inputs and long water residence times during summer initially promoted the accumulation of phytoplankton, but the resulting low dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations lead to limitation of phytoplankton growth. Chlorophyll a and DIN values obtained in the present study were comparable to those reported 20 years ago for the Tagus estuary.  相似文献

Six-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were grown in open top chambers (OTCs) at ambient (AC) or elevated (ambient + 400 µmol mol–1; EC) CO2 concentration for three years (1996–1998). Chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence of current and one-year-old needles was measured in the field at two-weekly intervals in the period July–October 1998. In addition, Chl, carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) concentrations in both needle age classes were determined monthly during the same period. Chl fluorescence parameters were not significantly affected by EC, suggesting there was no response of the light reactions and the photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2. Chl concentrations were not significantly different but a reduced N concentration was observed in needles of EC treatment. Significant differences between needle age classes were observed for all parameters, but were most apparent under EC and toward the end of the growing season, possibly due to an acclimation process. As a result, significant interactions between CO2 treatment, needle age class, and season were found. This study emphasizes the importance of repeated measures including different leaf/needle age classes to assess the photosynthetic response of trees under EC.  相似文献

Summary Four autotrophic compartments were recognised in Lake Kitiesh, King George Island (Southern Shetland) at the beginning of the summer in 1987: snow microalgae, ice bubble communities, phytoplankton in the water column and benthic communities of moss with epiphytes. Chlorophyll a concentration and pigment absorption spectra were obtained in these four compartments before and/or after the thawing of the ice cover. During the ice free period, carbon fixation and biomass was measured in the phytoplankton and in the benthic moss Campyliadelphus polygamus. From these measurements we conclude that the benthic moss is the most significant autotrophic component in this lake in terms of biomass, chlorophyll a content and primary productivity. The integral assimilation number (The ratio of carbon fixation per unit area to biomass per unit area) values were similar for both phytoplankton and the moss, ranging from 3.6 to 5.4 mg C (mg Chl a)–1h–1in phytoplankton and from 4.0 to 6.4 mgC (mg Chl a)–1h–1 in the benthic moss. This approach allows comparisons of carbon fixation efficiency of the chlorophyll a under a unit area between compartments in their different light environments.  相似文献
