Plant canopies can be considered as assemblages of leaves, stemsand fruits growing in zones of differing irradiance demarcatedby contours of mean irradiance as measured on a horizontal surface. The following general equations have been derived to calculatethe leaf area (LI) and the canopy volume (CVI) in zones externalto any chosen contour of mean irradiance: (1) LI = ((1nl)/(–K)(I–Tf) or leaf area index (LAI) if this is less (2) CVI = LI/(leaf area density m2 m–2), where I is the specified value of irradiance (horizontal surface)expressed as a decimal fraction of that above the canopy, Kis the appropriate extinction coefficient and Tf is the proportionof the total of available radiation which, if the canopy isdiscontinuous, would reach the ground by passing through gapsbetween the discrete canopy units. Where the canopy is continuousTf is zero so expression (1) simplifies to L1 = 1n I/–K(or LAI if this is less). For a range of model hedgerow orchards of varying dimensions, spacings and LAIs, it has been shown that the use of these equationsgives very similar results to those obtained by detailed calculationof light penetration. They therefore seem to be of potentialuse in calculating both potential dry-matter production by discontinuouscanopies of any type and, in the case of orchard fruit crops, the potential effect of changes in tree size, leaf area density, spacing etc. on the canopy volume in which irradiation is adequatefor fruit bud initiation and fruit colour development. light distribution, discontinuous canopy, irradiance contours, leaf area index, orchards  相似文献

A method incorporating interactive computer graphics to simulatespatially variable interception and canopy photosynthesis isdescribed. The method presents a graphical interface to a conventionalmodel of radiation interception and canopy photosynthesis. Includedis the capacity to consider a large number of positions withinthe canopy, thus providing a rapid and convenient representationof the dynamics of photosynthesis while also overcoming limitationsof one-dimensional models applied to complex plant canopies. The method was applied to examine spatial variability of photosynthesiswithin canopies of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) vines growingon two trellis types. The diurnal integral of simulated canopyphotosynthesis, assuming sunny conditions, for a vine trainedon a horizontal 'Pergola' trellis was 14% higher than that fora vine with similar leaf area distribution trained on a 'T-bar'trellis with inclined surfaces. Simulations of photosynthesisfor vines on a T-bar trellis, assuming spatially variable leafarea distributions as measured under filed conditions, indicateddisproportionate contributions from different regions of thecanopy. Canopy regions inclined to the east or the west wereusually the major sites for photosynthesis immediately aftersunrise and before sunset respectively, while regions near thecordon were the most important overall. For any day, the maximumsimulated photosynthetic rate generally declined with distancefrom the cordon and, at any distance from the cordon, increasedwith leaf index. For a vine with an average leaf area indexof 2·7, diurnal integrals of photosynthesis on a sunnyday in late summer ranged from 1·0 mol CO2 m-2 near thecordon to 0·5 mol CO2 m-2 at 1·5 m from the cordon.Within-canopy shading was more important on sunny days thanon cloudy days, while the spatial distribution of leaf areawas especially important on cloudy days. Comparison of simulationswith direct measurements of canopy photosynthesis indicatedthat a numerical integral of simulated photosynthesis, basedon a large number of canopy positions, provided a reasonableestimate of total canopy photosynthesis.Copyright 1993, 1999Academic Press Actinidia deliciosa, kiwifruit, interactive computer graphics, mathematical modelling, photosynthesis, radiation interception, spatial heterogeneity  相似文献

To better understand source-sink interactions, this work focusedon the influence of fruit number on leaf area and photosyntheticactivity in cantaloupe. To this end, flowers were removed over2 years on two Charentais cultivars to obtain single-fruit plantsand plants with an unrestricted fruit load (which set two tofive fruits and constituted control plants). At the whole plantscale, net photosynthesis was reduced by about 30% under highfruit load. At the leaf scale, a submodel of stomatal conductancewas fitted to the data and was included in a rectangular hyperbolamodel of leaf photosynthesis. Maximum leaf net photosynthesisaveraged 14.83 µmol CO2m-2s-1at 1000 µmol quantam-2s-1. Light use efficiency was not affected by fruit loadand equalled 0.040 mol CO2mol-1quanta. Leaf area of plants withunrestricted fruit load decreased after 24 days from pollination, while the leaf area of single-fruit plants was still increasing. The decrease was due to production of fewer new leaves per day, whereas the number of senescent leaves and the size of individualleaves were not affected by the treatment. Under high fruitload, cultivar Galoubet developed a larger projected leaf areathan cultivar Talma. Thus it is concluded that: (1) large cantaloupefruits may divert a large amount of assimilates away from, andgrow at the expense of, the canopy; and (2) photosynthesis ofthe canopy was lowered because leaf area was reduced whereasphotosynthetic rate of leaves was not altered.Copyright 1998Annals of Botany Company. Measurements of the growth of sainfoin and lucerne were madein the field after cutting on 31 May 1977. Sainfoin reacheda total above-ground dry weight of 408 g m–2 over thegrowing period of 48 days compared with 598 g m–2 in lucerne.Final leaf area indices (LAIs) were 2.8 in sainfoin and 6.1in lucerne. The specific leaf areas (SLAs) for sainfoin wereapproximately half those of lucerne throughout the regrowthperiod. The maximum rates of leaf appearance were 0.12 leavesper day in sainfoin and 0.85 leaves per day in lucerne. Themaximum mean rate of plant extension growth for lucerne of 2.12mm h–1 occurred during the night, whereas, in sainfointhe maximum rate of 1.72 mm h–1 occurred during the day. Measurements of extinction coefficients for PAR ranged from0.45 to 0.89 in sainfoin and from 0 42 to 0.57 in lucerne. Asthe lucerne crop increased in size leaf water potentials andsolute potentials became more negative. In sainfoin leaf waterpotentials remained remarkably high throughout the growth period, solute potentials decreased and turgor potentials increased. The stomatal conductances of the two species were similar. The photosynthetic capacities and rates of dark respirationper unit leaf area in both species were similar. The rate ofcanopy ‘gross’ photosynthesis at 295 W m–2was always greater in lucerne than in sainfoin. This was largelya matter of differences between the species in LAI, althoughat higher LAIs the more erect structure of lucerne leads toa better utilization of photosynthetically active radiation. The rates of canopy and individual leaf photosynthesis and 14Cdistribution for three temperate forage grasses Lolium perennecv. S24, L. perenne cv. Reveille and Festuc'a arundinacea cv.SI70 were determined in the field during a summer growth period.Canopy photosynthesis declined as the growth period progressed, reflecting a decline in the photosynthetic capacity of successiveyoungest fully expanded leaves. The decline in the maximum photosyntheticcapacity of the canopies was correlated with a decline in theirquantum efficiencies at low irradiance. Changes in canopy structureresulted in changes in canopy net photosynthesis and dark respiration. No clear relationships between changes in the environment andchanges in canopy net photosynthesis and dark respiration wereestablished. The relative distributions of 14C in the shootsof the varieties gave a good indication of the amount of drymatter per ground area in the varieties.  相似文献

Simulated mixed swards of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL. cv. S23) and white clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. S100)were grown from seed under a constant 10°C day/8°C nighttemperature regime and their growth, and carbon and nitrogeneconomies examined. The swards received a nutrient solution, every second day, which contained either high (220 µgg–1) or low (40 µg g–1) nitrate N. The High-N swards had rates of canopy photosynthesis and drymatter production (over the linear phase of growth) similarto those previously shown by mixed swards at high temperature. The Low-N swards grew more slowly; canopy photosynthesis, ata given LAI, was similar to that at High-N but lower LAI's weresustained. Clover increased its contribution to total carbonuptake and total dry weight throughout the period in the Low-Ntreatment and, despite the fact that grass took up most of theavailable nitrate, clover maintained a consistently higher Ncontent by virtue of N2-fixation. At High-N, grass dominated throughout the measurement period.Earlier, when plants grew as spaced individuals, clover grewless well than grass, but once the canopy was closed it hada similar relative growth rate and thus maintained a steadyproportion of total sward dry weight. It is proposed that earlyin the development of the crop, leaf area production is thelimiting factor for growth, and that in this respect cloveris adversely affected by low temperature relative to grass.Later, as the LAI of the crop builds up, and the canopy becomesfully light intercepting, net canopy photosynthesis plays amore dominant role and here the higher photosynthetic rate perunit leaf area of the clover is crucial. Effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment to a level above 600 parts10–6 on leaf and canopy gas exchange characteristics wereinvestigated in Trifolium repens, using an open system for gasexchange measurement. The cuvettes of the system served as growthchambers, allowing continuous measurement in a semi-controlledenvironment of ±350 and ±600 parts 10–6CO2, respectively. Carbon balance data were compared with cropyield and effects on the canopy level were compared with measuredleaf responses of photosynthesis and stomatal behaviour. Photosyntheticstimulation by high CO2 was stronger at the canopy level (103%on average) than for leaves (90% in full light), as a consequenceof accelerated foliage area development. The latter increasedabsolute water consumption by 16%, despite strong stomatal closure. The overall result was a 63% improvement in canopy water useefficiency (WUE), while leaf WVE increased almost 3-fold insaturating light. The stomatal response was such that, whilethe internal CO2 concentration in the leaf, ch increased withrising atmospherical CO2 concentration, ca, ci/ca was somewhatdecreased. Total canopy resistance, Rc, was generally lowerat high CO2 levels, despite higher leaf resistance. Higher canopyCO2 loss at night and faster light extinction in a larger-sizedhigh CO2 canopy were major drawbacks which prevented a furtherincrease in dry matter production (the harvest index was increasedby a factor 1.83). The aim of this study was to examine the potential for lightacclimation in shade grown seedlings of Bischofia javanica Blume. The seedlings were grown under simulated forest shade light(40 µmol m–2 s–1), and after transfer to ahigher light level (1200 µmol m–2 s–1), chlorophyllfluorescence induction kinetics, net photosynthesis, and changesin leaf chlorophylls and leaf anatomy were examined in leavesthat were fully developed prior to the transfer. The low-light (LL) leaf displayed photoinhibition immediatelyafter transfer to high-light (HL). This photo-inhibition wassubstantial, and continued for several days. Chlorophyll bleachingoccurred only after a certain degree of photoinhibition hadproceeded. Photosynthetic light acclimation commenced immediatelyafter severe photoinhibition. An increase in chlorophylls perunit leaf area was also immediate after severe bleaching. Thechanges in leaf chlorophylls over time were consistent withthe visual observations of bleaching and recovery. The leafweight per unit leaf area increased gradually on transfer toHL and finally it approached that of the newly formed HL leaf.Although fully expanded prior to transfer to HL, the leaf thicknesswas increased by about 45% and the leaf tissues became denserwithout changing the leaf area and the stomatal density. Finally, the net photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area was higher thanthat before exposure by 75% but less than that of newly formedHL leaf by more than 30%. Moreover, leaf movements were observedafter exposure to HL and also the formation of short epicormicshoots with a cluster of small leaves on the lower part of thestem during light acclimation. It is concluded that the fully expanded shade leaf has a wideacclimation plasticity. In addition to leaf acclimation, wholeplant responses such as leaf movements, the formation of epicormicshoots and the production of new ‘sun-type’ leavesunder HL may be of crucial importance to the success of thespecies following opening of the canopy. A simple model of photosynthesis is described which is dependenton leaf area, organic nitrogen content and distribution withinthe canopy as well as on the light and temperature environments. The model is parameterized using a cauliflower crop as an example. The optimized protein-N profile within the canopy is calculatedwith respect to daily growth rate. By comparison with measuredprotein-N contents, the amount of super-optimal N-uptake, i.e.the N-uptake which does not increase productivity, is assessedfor two different nitrogen and light treatments. The amountof super-optimal N accumulated in cauliflower depends on N-supplyand can exceed 80 kg N ha-1. Summary A hypothesis that a dense stand should develop a less uniform distribution of leaf nitrogen through the canopy than an open stand to increase total canopy photosynthesis was tested with experimentally established stands of Lysimachia vulgaris L. The effect of stand density on spatial variation of photon flux density, leaf nitrogen and specific leaf weight within the canopy was examined. Stand density had little effect on the value of the light extinction coefficient, but strongly affected the distribution of leaf nitrogen per unit area within a canopy. The open stand had more uniform distribution of leaf nitrogen than the dense stand. However, different light climates between stands explained only part of the variation of leaf nitrogen in the canopy. The specific leaf weight in the canopy increased with increasing relative photon flux density and with decreasing nitrogen concentration.  相似文献

Microswards of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grownin controlled environments at 10/7, 18/13 and 26/21 °C day/nighttemperatures. The vertical distribution of leaves of differentages and their rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ were studied. Extending petioles carried the laminae of young leaves throughthe existing foliage. A final position was reached within 1/4to 1/3 of the time between unfolding and death. Newly unfoldedleaves had higher rates of 14CO2-uptake per leaf area than olderones at the same height in the canopy. At higher temperatures, the decrease with age was faster. However, the light-photosynthesisresponse of leaves which were removed from different heightsin the canopy varied much less with leaf age than did the ratesof 14CO2-uptake in situ. The comparison of the rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ with thelight-photosynthesis response curves suggests that young leavesreceive more light than older ones at the same height in thecanopy. This would imply that young white clover leaves havethe ability to reach canopy positions having a favourable lightenvironment. This ability may improve the chances of survivalof white clover in competition with other species. Growth of white clover was investigated in permanent grasslandcut three or five times per year. The influence of cutting frequencyand nitrogen fertilization on dry-matter yield, leaf-area distributionand the distribution of photosynthetically active radiationwithin the canopy were examined. In the five cut treatments, total dry-matter yield was nearlyequal, with and without nitrogen. However, nitrogen practicallyeliminated white clover. Leaf-area distribution showed characteristicpatterns for the different treatments. The small proportionof white clover in the treatment with nitrogen fertilizationwas thought to be due to the large leaf area of the other speciesat heights which white clover could not attain. This conclusionwas supported additionally by the radiation measurements withinthe canopy. The sunlit fractional area within canopy layers was measuredwith ‘quantum sensors’ and calculated from canopytransmission measured with tube solarimeters. The leaf areaindex of white clover was highly correlated (r2 = 0.68) withthe sunlit fractional area above the canopy layers where whiteclover was present. This response of white clover leaf growth to the light regimeis discussed in relation to the potential petiole growth. Growth of Individuals in Plant Populations   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Relationships between individual plant weight and net photosynthesisper day (G(t, x) function of plant weight) in plant populationsof various stand structures were simulated based on a canopyphotosynthesis model. The G(t, x) functions of plant weightare determined mainly by LAI (leaf area index), the relationshipbetween individual plant weight and leaf area, canopy structureand extinction coefficient. The concave relationship betweenindividual plant weight and leaf area at small LAI (<2),at small extinction coefficient (< 0.5), or at the canopystructure having the maximum leaf area density at the bottomproduces a concave G(t, x) function, which generates negativeskewness of plant weight. The linear relationship between individualplant weight and leaf area at large LAI (> 2) produces aconvex G(t, x) function, which generates positive skewness ofplant weight. These simulation results coincide with G(t, x)functions obtained experimentally and with the well-known phenomenonof stand dynamics in which skewness of plant weight becomesnegative in the early growth stage and then increases to a positivevalue as a stand grows and becomes crowded. Growth and production of the temperate C4 species Cyperus longusL. was measured throughout a growing season in an establishedplot in Eastern Ireland. The maximum standing live biomass reachedwas 2·5 kg m–2. Estimates of unit leaf rate (ULR)and leaf area index (LAI) were made. The product of these quantitiesgave the crop growth rate (CGR) each week. C. longus was foundto maintain high values of LAI throughout the summer, with amaximum value of about 13 in early August. CGR reached a peakin early July. The optimum LAI was 11·6. Temperaturesat five levels in the plant canopy, and the amount of solarradiation intercepted by the canopy were measured continuouslyduring the summer. The mean daily rate of leaf extension waspositively correlated with the mean daily air temperature abovethe canopy but the temperature coefficient of the process waslow compared with other temperate species. The percentage ofsolar radiation intercepted by the canopy increased rapidlyin early summer, and canopy closure had occurred by mid-June.Rates of net photosynthesis were measured on young and old leafmaterial in situ at the time of peak LAI. In young leaves themaximum rates of net photosynthesis were higher than those publishedfor a range of temperate C3 species, but similar to those foundin another temperate C4 species, Spartina townsendii. Vegetative crops of chrysanthemum were grown for 5 or 6 weekperiods in daylit assimilation chambers. Crop responses to differentradiation levels and temperatures were analysed into effectson dry matter partitioning, specific leaf area, leaf photosynthesisand canopy light interception. The percentage of newly formed dry matter partitioned to theleaves was almost constant, although with increasing radiationor decreasing temperature, a greater percentage of dry matterwas partitioned to stem tissue at the expense of root tissue. There was a positive correlation between the percentage of drymatter in shoot material and the overall carbon: dry matterratio. Canopy photosynthesis was analysed assuming identical behaviourfor all leaves in the crop. Leaf photochemical efficiency wasonly slightly affected by crop environment. The rate of grossphotosynthesis per unit leaf area at light saturation, PA (max),increased with increasing radiation integral, but the same parameterexpressed per unit leaf dry matter, Pw (max) was almost unaffectedby growth radiation. In contrast, PA (max) was hardly affectedby temperature but Pw (max) increased with increasing growthtemperature. This was because specific leaf area decreased withdecreasing temperature and increased with decreasing radiation. There was a positive correlation between canopy respirationintegral and photosynthesis integral, and despite a four-foldchange in crop mass during the experiments, the maintenancecomponent of canopy respiration remained small and constant. Canopy extinction coefficient showed no consistent variationwith radiation integral but was negatively correlated with temperature. This decrease in the efficiency of the canopy at interceptingradiation exactly cancelled the increase in specific carbonassimilation rate that occurred with increasing growth temperature, giving a growth rate depending solely on the incident lightlevel. The development of vertical canopy gradients of leaf N has beenregarded as an adaptation to the light gradient that helps tomaximize canopy photosynthesis. In this study we report thedynamics of vertical leaf N distribution during vegetative growthof wheat in response to changes in N availability and sowingdensity. The question of to what extent the observed verticalleaf N distribution maximized canopy photosynthesis was addressedwith a leaf layer model of canopy photosynthesis that integratesN-dependent leaf photosynthesis according to the canopy lightand leaf N distribution. Plants were grown hydroponically attwo amounts of N, supplied in proportion to calculated growthrates. Photosynthesis at light saturation correlated with leafN. The vertical leaf N distribution was associated with thegradient of absorbed light. The leaf N profile changed duringcrop development and was responsive to N availability. At highN supply, the leaf N profiles were constant during crop development. At low N supply, the leaf N profiles fluctuated between moreuniform and steep distributions. These changes were associatedwith reduced leaf area expansion and increasing N remobilizationfrom lower leaf layers. The distribution of leaf N with respectto the gradient of absorbed irradiance was close to the theoreticaloptimum maximizing canopy photosynthesis. Sensitivity analysisof the photosynthesis model suggested that plants maintain anoptimal vertical leaf N distribution by balancing the capacityfor photosynthesis at high and low light. Greenhouse grown monocultures of Trifolium pratense L, werepartially defoliated to test the hypothesis that the constantof proportionality (K) in the self-thinning rule is a functionof leaf area. This constant equates mean weight (w) and density(p) in self-thinning populations by the equation Pruning leaflets did not affect the pattern or occurrence ofdensity-related mortality but, as predicted, did affect K, whichwas reduced by 25 per cent as leaf area was decreased from anaverage of 7.3 to 3.9 m2m–2. For both self-thinning andnon-self-thinning populations, leaf area was substituted forK in eqn (1) to give Multiple linear regression showed that this expression was significantfor all three defoliation treatments. Regressions with treedata grouped by genera were also significant and indicate thateqn (2) may be a more general expression of the relation betweenmean weight and density in even-aged monocultures. The self-thinningrule may be a special case of eqn (2) which expresses itselfwhen leaf area attains some upper limit. Trifolium pratense, red clover, leaf area, self-thinning, defoliation  相似文献

Small communities of S24 ryegrass were grown under supplementarylights in a glasshouse at 20°C, and abundantly suppliedwith a complete nutrient solution containing 300 p.p.m. of nitrogen, until they had a leaf area index of 5 and fully interceptedthe light. Half were then given a solution containing only 3p.p.m. of nitrogen (LN) while the rest were kept at 300 p.p.m.(HN). The LN plants had a rate of single leaf photosynthesis lowerthan that of the HN plants at all but the lowest light intensities(33 per cent lower at the saturating irradiance of 170 W m–2).Similarly, the LN communities had rates of canopy gross photosynthesis(Psc) markedly lower than those of the HN communities. A comparisonof the observed rates of Psc with those predicted by a mathematicalmodel of canopy photosynthesis indicated that it was the effectof nitrogen on single leaf photosynthesis, rather than differencesbetween the communities in leaf area, which led to the observeddifferences in Psc. The superiority of the HN communities in terms of Psc was partlyoffset by a higher rate of respiration so that they only exceededthe LN communities in terms of canopy net photosynthesis atirradiances in excess of 180 W m–2, and produced only15 per cent more total dry matter. Nevertheless, the HN plantsdirected less of that dry matter into root and more into topsso that they came to possess twice the weight of live laminae, and the HN communities twice the leaf area, of their nitrogendeficient counterparts. How Tough are Sclerophylls?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fracture toughness was estimated for a 'least tough' path inthe leaves of woody species from three sclerophyllous plantcommunities. Most of the species from Mediterranean, tropicalheath forest and lowland tropical rain forest habitats had verytough leaves, with toughness generally 600-1300 J m-2, whichis two to four times higher than soft-leaved tropical pioneertrees. The toughest leaf (2032 J m-2), Parishia insignis, camefrom the canopy of the lowland rain forest. Leaves from theshaded understorey of the rain forest did not appear any lesstough than those from the canopy.Copyright 1993, 1999 AcademicPress Leaf fracture toughness, sclerophylly, Mediterranean vegetation, tropical forest  相似文献
