We studied the competitive effects within and between two taxonomically distant freshwater herbivores, a snail and a mayfly, common in Swedish lakes, Lymnaea peregra and Cloeon dipterum, respectively, and their effect on grazing in a laboratory experiment. The experimental set-up consisted of 2-l aquaria, each containing a periphyton covered tile. Intra- and interspecific effects were tested by increasing the density of one species at a time in four different treatments, (1) snails (intraspecific treatment), (2) mayflies (intraspecific treatment), (3) mixed-snails (interspecific treatments, snails kept constant) and (4) mixed-mayflies (interspecific treatments, mayflies kept constant). Intraspecific competition affected both snails and mayflies negatively, i.e. increasing mortality with increasing con-specific density. Furthermore, there was a decrease in snail growth with increasing snail density. In the mixed-species treatments both species changed their microhabitat use indicating interspecific competition. Despite this, we also found a positive effect of mayfly density on snail growth, most likely due to indirect commensalism. No density-dependent effect of grazing on periphyton was found, probably due to interference competition between grazers. However, there was a significant difference in periphyton biomass, due to species composition of grazers. Irrespective of their densities, if they co-existed, the two grazer species decreased the periphyton biomass significantly compared with both single-species treatments. We considered this as a joint action of facilitation and interaction. Our results suggest that competition can be an important structuring factor in macroinvertebrate communities and that species composition can be significant for ecosystem processes within lentic environments.  相似文献

Background  Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are believed to originate from the intestinal pacemaker cells (interstitial cells of Cajal) or their progenitor cells. Spontaneous tumors have been reported in dogs, horses, rhesus, and a chimpanzee and they have been produced experimentally in mice and rats. GISTs represent a diagnostic challenge because they cannot be differentiated from non-lymphoid mesenchymal tumors without using human c-kit (CD117) immunohistochemistry.
Methods  Three neoplasms were incidental findings at necropsy in the stomachs of a baboon and a spider monkey and in the rectum of a chimpanzee.
Results  The GISTs were initially diagnosed grossly and histologically with hematoxylin and eosin as leiomyomas. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that all three were c-kit (CD117) positive.
Conclusions  These are the first reports of GISTs in the baboon and spider monkey and the second in a chimpanzee. The occurrence of GISTs in non-human primates may provide a unique opportunity to study these tumors.  相似文献

Different analyses of genetic polymorphisms performed on the Basque population have suggested a possible heterogeneity of the Basques and a singularity of their genetic characteristics. In this paper, both aspects are analyzed by means of the genetic study of seven polymorphic systems--ACP, ADA, AK, ESD, PGD, GC, and HP--in 854 autochthonous individuals from the province of Vizcaya. The individuals were classified as being from the regions of Arratia, Guernica, Durango, Uribe, Marquina, Lea, and Bilbao, on the basis of the birthplaces of their four grandparents. Analyses for heterogeneity of the gene frequencies distribution suggest that there is a moderate genetic heterogeneity, probably produced by centuries of geographical and administrative isolation of these regions. The comparison with caucasoid populations, performed using the principal components analysis and Cavalli-Sforza and Edwards arc distance, indicates that the subpopulations of the province of Vizcaya have experienced little genetic exchange with other caucasoids and that the distribution of their genetic frequencies differentiates them from other populations.  相似文献

Summary Within 24 h after the initial phagocytotic uptake of freshly isolated (from host tissue) symbiotic algae (Symbiodinium microadriaticum) by the endodermal cells of the polyp (scyphistoma) stage of the jellyfish Cassiopeia xamachana, the algal population was observed to decline despite evidence of algal cell division. Analyses of the frequency of phago-lysosome fusion as an indicator of possible attempts of the host to digest the algae indicated that, although phago-lysosome fusion did occur, the low frequency of occurrence is inconsistent with the interpretation that the animals digested the algae. Animal cell lysosomes were located predominantly at the apices of the endodermal cells, and the symbiotic algae were transported toward the bases of the endodermal cells.Within 3 days after initial infection, most endodermal cells with algae ceased to be phagocytotically active (with respect to the uptake of carmine particles). Many of these endodermal cells soon migrated into the mesoglea to become what are traditionally referred to as amoebocytes. Within amoebocytes the algae proliferated. The onset of strobilation by the scyphistomae was directly correlated with the increase in the algal population within these amoebocytes.  相似文献

In studying macroglossia, no one has described normal tongue size or applied direct measurement to the pathologically enlarged tongue. Since macroglossia is primarily a condition that requires treatment on a symptomatic basis, definition of the problem in clinical terms is the most useful form for the practitioner. Based on published reports and our clinical experience, a classification scheme for macroglossia has been formulated. The concept of true macroglossia and relative macroglossia form a framework that categorizes acquired and congenital forms of tongue enlargement. True macroglossia exists when histologic abnormalities correlate with the clinical findings of tongue enlargement. Vascular malformations, muscular enlargement, and tumors are the most common forms of true macroglossia. Relative macroglossia includes those cases of apparent tongue enlargement in which the histology does not provide a pathologic explanation. Down's syndrome is a commonly quoted cause for tongue enlargement and is a form of relative macroglossia. The development of this classification system establishes an approach and common terminology on which therapy, research, and communication can be based.  相似文献

The relationships between sponges and macroalgae have been poorly investigated, especially in temperate waters. This work describes the consortium between the dictyoceratid sponge Dysidea pallescens and the red alga Acrochaetium spongicola permeating spongin fibres in the Mediterranean Sea; moreover, this is the first report of a diatom, Amphora pediculus, living also inside the spongin skeleton. The annual trend of the total algal biomass did not vary over time in relation to the temperature, irradiance and incorporation of foreign bodies. Our analyses, conducted by light and electron microscopy, suggest that both the macroalga and the diatom invade the skeleton of the sponge from the external environment, and that the benthic diatom, epiphyte of the macroalga, is passively carried inside the fibres through the growth of Acrochaetium spongicola. All the examined samples of D. pallescens showed that the macroalga permeated at least some fibres, while the presence of the diatom was occasional. The superficial layer of the sponge, thin and reticulate, likely allows the passage of the light and ensures the algal survival inside the sponge tissue. The high occurrence of the association with A. spongicola, together with the morphological adaptations of the sponge favouring the algal life, suggest that the relationship is mutualistic. The possible benefits for the involved partners are hypothesized. The taxonomy and ecology of endozoic Acrochaetiales are controversial due to the reduced size of thalli, the absence of peculiar diagnostic characters and unknown reproductive structures. Therefore, detailed studies on the relationships between the algae and their hosts will provide helpful information for the algal identification.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A model of the functional response to prey density is derived to include the reduction in time available for search, Ts , resulting from predator satiation.
2. For larger prey items predator satiation occurs at each prey capture and Ts is reduced by the attack time and digestive pause of a series of attack cycles. For small prey items predator foraging is continuous at low densities with Ts reduced solely by attack time. At higher densities predator satiation occurs after the capture of several small prey items and Ts is reduced by the attack time and digestive pause of a series of foraging cycles.
3. A comparison of the predicted asymptotic level of prey capture using experimentally estimated parameter values, with the maximum consumption of aphids by larval and adult coccinellids provides a test of the satiation model.
4. The limitation of prey capture by predator satiation is discussed with reference to handling time and the success of coccinellids in biological control.  相似文献

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a lysosomal storage disorder of the brain caused by mutations in the gene encoding the lysosomal sulfatase, arylsulfatase A (ASA). It is not possible to treat the brain in MLD with recombinant ASA, because the enzyme does not cross the blood‐brain barrier (BBB). In the present investigation, a BBB‐penetrating IgG‐ASA fusion protein is engineered and expressed, where the ASA monomer is fused to the carboxyl terminus of each heavy chain of an engineered monoclonal antibody (MAb) against the human insulin receptor (HIR). The HIRMAb crosses the BBB via receptor‐mediated transport on the endogenous BBB insulin receptor, and acts as a molecular Trojan horse to ferry the ASA into brain from blood. The HIRMAb‐ASA is expressed in stably transfected Chinese hamster ovary cells grown in serum free medium, and purified by protein A affinity chromatography. The fusion protein retains high affinity binding to the HIR, EC50 = 0.34 ± 0.11 nM, and retains high ASA enzyme activity, 20 ± 1 units/mg. The HIRMAb‐ASA fusion protein is endocytosed and triaged to the lysosomal compartment in MLD fibroblasts. The fusion protein was radio‐labeled with the Bolton–Hunter reagent, and the [125I]‐HIRMAb‐ASA rapidly penetrates the brain in the Rhesus monkey following intravenous administration. Film and emulsion autoradiography of primate brain shows global distribution of the fusion protein throughout the monkey brain. These studies describe a new biological entity that is designed to treat the brain of humans with MLD following non‐invasive, intravenous infusion of an IgG‐ASA fusion protein. Biotechnol. In the short term, grazing will mainly affect plant biomass and forage quality. However, grazing can affect plant species composition by accelerating or retarding succession at longer time-scales. Few studies concerning interactions among herbivores have taken the change in plant species composition into account. In a salt-marsh system, the long-term effects of exclusion of a large herbivore (cattle) on the abundance of a small herbivore (hare) were studied. Excluding cattle grazing for 30 years resulted in large changes in vegetation composition. In general, the cover of tall-growing species increased in the absence of cattle grazing. These long-term changes negatively affected hare grazing intensity. Hares preferentially fed on Festuca rubra and negatively selected tall growing plants, such as Elymus athericus, both in cattle-grazed and long-term ungrazed areas. However, the intensity of hare grazing was not related to the cover of F. rubra. The cover of tall-growing plants (E. athericus, Atriplex prostrata and Juncus maritimus) appeared to be the best predictor and hare grazing intensity decreased sharply with an increase of the cover of tall plants. When cover of tall plants did not increase, hare grazing intensity was not affected. The study shows that the time-scale of the experiment is of prime importance in studying interactions between herbivores. Species that do not seem to influence the abundance of one another or are competing for the same resources on a short time-scale might well be facilitating each other when looking at larger time-scales while taking plant species replacement into account.  相似文献

Using human cultured cell lines or lymphocytes, two kinds of murine- and one human-monoclonal antibodies were produced, respectively and their clinical usefulness were investigated, and the possibility of galactosyl-transferase as a new tumor maker was also discussed. (1) A murine monoclonal antibody MSN-1, which was raised against human endometrial cancer cell line and recognized blood type sugar chain Leb, reacted with about 85% of endometrial cancer tissues, indicating that useful clinical information may be obtained by applying MSN-1 to immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. (2) A new assay system using two murine monoclonal antibodies MA54 and MA61, which were raised against human lung cancer cell line and reacted with mucin sugar residues, revealed 76% positive rate in ovarian cancer patients, especially 82% in mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, indicating the clinical effectiveness as a new tumor maker compensating for the drawbacks of CA-125. (3) Galactosyl-transferase isozyme GT-2 was analyzed by the assay system using a newly produced monoclonal antibody. GT-2 was positive in 74% of ovarian cancers, especially in 89% of meso-nephroid cancer, indicating that GT-2 could be a useful tumor maker in ovarian tumors. (4) Human monoclonal antibody, which recognized "type 1 sugar chain" or iso-paragloboside, reacted about one half of endometrial cancer tissues. The production of human monoclonal antibody may contribute to the cancer imaging and the missile therapy.  相似文献

This research utilized tower‐based eddy covariance to quantify the trends in net ecosystem mass (CO2 and H2O vapor) and energy exchange of important land‐cover types of NW Mato Grosso during the March–December 2002 seasonal transition. Measurements were made in a mature transitional (ecotonal) tropical forest near Sinop, Mato Grosso, and a cattle pasture near Cotriguaçú, Mato Grosso, located 500 km WNW of Sinop. Pasture net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) was considerably more variable than the forest NEE over the seasonal transition, and the pasture had significantly higher rates of maximum gross primary production in every season except the dry–wet season transition (September–October). The pasture also had significantly higher rates of whole‐ecosystem dark respiration than the forest during the wetter times of the year. Average (±95% CI) rates of total daily NEE during the March–December 2002 measurement period were 26±15 mmol m?2 day?1 for the forest (positive values indicate net CO2 loss by the ecosystem) and ?38±26 mmol m?2 day?1 for the pasture. While both ecosystems partitioned more net radiation (Rn) into latent heat flux (Le), the forest had significantly higher rates of Le and lower rates of sensible heat flux (H) than the pasture; a trend that became more extreme during the onset of the dry season. Large differences in pasture and forest mass and energy exchange occurred even though seasonal variations in micrometeorology (air temperature, humidity, and radiation) were relatively similar for both ecosystems. While the short measurement period and lack of spatial replication limit the ability to generalize these results to pasture and forest regions of the Amazon Basin, these results suggest important differences in the magnitude and seasonal variation of NEE and energy partitioning for pasture and transitional tropical forest.  相似文献
