Gender of the calf whose birth initiates lactation could influence whole lactation milk yield of the dam due to hormonal influences on mammary gland development, or through calf gender effects on gestation length. Fetal gender could influence late lactation yields because cows become pregnant at peak lactation. The effects of calf gender sequences in parities 1–3 were assessed by separately fitting animal models to datasets from New Zealand comprising 274 000 Holstein Friesian and 85 000 Jersey cows, decreasing to 12 000 and 4 000 cows by parity 3. The lactation initiated by the birth of a female rather than a male calf was associated with a 0.33–1.1% (p≤0.05) higher milk yield. Female calf gender had carryover effects associated with higher milk yield in second lactations for Holstein Friesians (0.24%; p = 0.01) and third lactations for Jerseys (1.1%; p = 0.01). Cows giving birth to bull calves have 2 day longer gestations, which reduces lactation length in seasonal calving herds. Adding a covariate for lactation length to the animal model eroded some of these calf gender effects, such that calving a female led to higher milk yield only for second lactation Holstein Friesians (1.6%; p = 0.002). The interval centering method generates lower estimates of whole lactation yield when Wood’s lactation curves are shifted to the right by 2 days for male calves and this explained the higher yield in female calves when differences in lactation length were considered. Correlations of estimated breeding values between models including or excluding calf gender sequence were 1.00 for bulls or cows. Calf gender primarily influences milk yield through increased gestation length of male calves, and bias associated with the interval centering method used to estimate whole lactation milk yields. Including information on calf gender is unlikely to have an effect on selection response in New Zealand dairy cattle.  相似文献

The expression profile of Haptoglobin (Hp) gene in total milk somatic cells (SCC) of high-yielding cross-bred Karan Fries (KF) was studied during early, mid, and late lactation cycle. Milk samples (200 ml/animals) were collected from 10 high-yielding and 10 low-yielding cows throughout the lactation cycle (from day 7 to day 300) with an interval of one month. Relative mRNA expression profiles of Hp by RT polymerase chain reaction was studied in high-yielding cows, whereas low-yielding cows were taken as control. The folds of induction of Hp was significantly (p < 0.001) downregulated by a mean factor of 0.207 in milk SCC during early lactating cows. Whereas, it was significantly (p < 0.01) upregulated by a mean factor of 20.888 during mid lactation. The expression was unaltered during the late lactation. The study demonstrates that Hp is synthesized within the mammary gland and significantly upregulated during mid-lactation period compared to other stages of lactation cycle.  相似文献

The milk production, energy balance (EB), endocrine and metabolite profiles of 10 New Zealand Holstein Friesian (NZ) cows and 10 North American Holstein Friesian (NA) cows were compared. The NA cows had greater peak milk yields and total lactation milk yields (7387 v. 6208 kg; s.e.d. = 359), lower milk fat and similar protein concentrations compared with the NZ cows. Body weight (BW) was greater for NA cows compared with NZ cows throughout lactation (596 v. 544 kg; s.e.d. = 15.5), while body condition score (BCS) tended to be lower. The NA strain tended to have greater dry matter intake (DMI) (17.2 v. 15.7 kg/day; s.e.d. = 0.78) for week 1 to 20 of lactation, though DMI as a proportion of metabolic BW was similar for both strains. No differences were observed between the strains in the timing and magnitude of the EB nadir, interval to neutral EB, or mean daily EB for week 1 to 20 of lactation. Plasma concentrations of glucose and insulin were greater for NA cows during the transition period (day 14 pre partum to day 28 post partum). Plasma IGF-I concentrations were similar for the strains at this time, but NZ cows had greater plasma IGF-I concentration from day 29 to day 100 of lactation, despite similar calculated EB. In conclusion, the results of this study do not support the premise that the NZ strain has a more favourable metabolic status during the transition period. The results, however, indicate that NZ cows begin to partition nutrients towards body reserves during mid-lactation, whereas NA cows continue to partition nutrients to milk production.  相似文献

The effect of weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity, lactation length, breed and their interactions on changes of vaginal impedance in sows after weaning and during oestrus was examined. The impedance measurements were carried out by a four-electrode method. The interval from weaning to oestrus was significantly longer in sows with the length of lactation 21-25 days than 26-30 days and 31-36 days and in primiparous than multiparous sows. The interval from weaning to oestrus was negatively correlated with the length of lactation (r=-0.21; P<0.05), parity (r=-0.36; P<0.01) and oestrus duration (r=-0.26; P<0.01). The weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity and lactation length had a significant effect and the breed of sows had no influence on the vaginal impedance in peri-oestrus. The decrease of vaginal impedance after weaning was delayed in sows with a longer weaning to oestrus interval and in primiparous than multiparous sows. The decline of vaginal impedance during peri-oestrus was more gradual in sows with a longer interval from weaning to oestrus, shorter lactation, primiparous sows and sows with the length of oestrus 36 h and 72 h and more. The nadir of vaginal impedance occurred earlier before oestrus in sows with a shorter oestrus. The interaction of weaning to oestrus interval with parity and oestrus duration and the interaction of oestrus duration with parity significantly affected the vaginal impedance in weaned sows. In conclusion, the weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity and lactation length considerably influence the vaginal impedance in sows during peri-oestrus. The findings indicate that the impedance technique may be a useful method for a study of factors and processes that accelerate or slow down the return to oestrus after weaning and affect oestrus duration in sows.  相似文献

Reproductive performance in Ohio dairy herds in the 1990s   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of this study was to evaluate trends in reproductive performance in Ohio dairy herds during the 1990s. Stringent criteria for herd inclusion were applied to DHI records to ensure high quality and reliability of the data. The final data set contained 44,425 monthly herd summary records from 1772 herds from years 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998. Outcomes of interest were calving interval length, calving-to-conception interval, days to first breeding, services per conception and first service conception rate. PROC MIXED in SAS (version 8.1) was used and the monthly records were treated as repeated measures nested within years and herds. First-order autoregressive covariance structure was used to model the covariance between the repeated measures within herds. The data were analyzed for the entire herd as well as for the first lactation cows separately. During the 1990s reproductive performance declined in Ohio dairy herds. Herd average calving interval lengthened from 13.6 to 14.1 months and calving-to-conception interval increased from 136 to 150 days between 1992 and 1998, respectively. Days to first service and number of services increased while first service conception rate declined on a herd level. The reproductive performance of first lactation cows, however, remained constant during this same period. Overall herd reproductive performance was associated with herd size and fat-corrected rolling herd average milk production (FCM). As milk yield increased, first service conception rate decreased and services per conception increased. Larger herds had lower first service conception rate and needed more services per conception, but they started breeding their cows earlier resulting in a slightly shorter calving interval and calving-to-conception interval compared to smaller herds.  相似文献

Data on productive and reproductive performance of cows in dual-purpose herds were analyzed to determine the effect of some environmental and genetic factors on saleable milk yield (SMY), lactation length (LL), daily saleable milk per lactation (DMYL), calving interval (CI), and daily saleable milk per calving interval (MYCI) in dual-purpose herds in Yucatan, Mexico. Repeatabilities (re) for these traits were also estimated. Data were obtained from monthly visits to 162 herds from 1996 to 2000. The fixed factors studied were: region (central, eastern and southern), parity number (1 to 6), calving year (1996 to 2000) and calving season (dry, rainy and windy and rainy), genetic group (low- (< 0.50%), medium- (50%) and high- (> 50%) grade cows with European genes). About 2700 to 7700 cows were evaluated for each trait. All factors had significant effects (P < 0.05) on the traits except for region on CI and calving season on DMYL. The overall means for SMY, LL, DMYL, CI, and MYCI were: 1322.3 +/- 80.5 kg, 224.8 +/- 1.3 days, 5.8 +/- 0.1 kg, 555.1 +/- 16.5 days, and 3.0 +/- 0.1 kg, respectively. The re values for SMY, LL, DMYL, CI, and MYCI traits were: 0.19 +/- 0.03, 0.08 +/- 0.04, 0.16 +/- 0.04, 0.00 +/- 0.08, and 0.08 +/- 0.07, respectively. First parity cows had lower SMY, shorter LL, longer CI, and lower MYCI means than cows with more than one parity. Medium grade cows produced more SMY, DMYL and MYCI and had shorter CI than low- and high-grade cows. Therefore, under Yucatan conditions medium-grade cows should be exploited, and more attention should be given to first parity cows in order to improve the productivity in the herd. The relatively high re estimates for SMY and DMYL can be used to calculate most probable producing abilities, in order to identify which cows should be culled.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the concentration of selenium in Holstein-Friesian cows at different stages of lactation. Selenium was determined spectrofluorimetrically and GSH-Px activity using a Sigma CGP1 Glutathione Peroxidase Cellular Activity Assay kit. Mean serum selenium concentration was highest in early-lactation multiparous cows (0.18 μg/ml) and the lowest in dry cows (0.111 μg/ml). In early lactation, serum selenium concentration was significantly (P ≤ 0.01) higher in multiparous cows than in cows from the other groups. Mean GSH-Px activity in the serum of dry cows was over twice lower than in late-lactation cows (P ≤ 0.01) and over four times lower than in first-calving heifers and multiparous cows in early lactation (P ≤ 0.01). The coefficients of Spearman's rank correlation between GSH-Px activity and selenium concentration in the cows at different stages of lactation were not significant. A significant (P ≤ 0.01) mean positive correlation (0.46) was found between GSH-Px activity and serum selenium concentration for all the cows analysed together. The highest Se concentration and GSH-Px activity found in the serum of cows during the first stage of lactation may suggest that the generation of reactive oxygen species and their derivatives was higher during this period compared to the other stages, thus placing the cows at a greater risk of oxidative stress. It is therefore essential to give particular attention during this period to meeting the cows' requirement for selenium and other feed components that increase, directly or indirectly, the capacity of the body's antioxidant system.  相似文献

An extended milking interval of 24 h (24-h milking interval (24h-MI)) constitutes the acute phase of cow adaptation to once-daily milking (ODM). A recent trial including 724 24h-MI challenges demonstrated that milk yield responses to this acute phase of ODM are highly variable (from+22% to −52% of milk yield when switching to the 24h-MI, mean=−25.3%) and that factors such as stage of lactation parity and milk yield level influenced cows’ responses but did not account for all individual variability. Additional traits related to physiological, immune and behavioural adaptation were measured on a subset (96 observations) of this data set. This study aimed to determine (1) the relationship of these traits with cows’ milk yield responses, (2) their ability – combined with previously identified traits – to help predict milk yield responses to 24h-MI (adaptive profiles). The 24h-MI challenge consisted of three successive periods: one control week of twice-daily milking (cTDM), one single day of 24h-MI and then 13 days of TDM (pTDM). Milk yield responses to the 24h-MI (corrected for effects of stage of lactation, parity, milk yield level and milk yield) were related to physiological traits measured during cTDM (milk flow rate, presence or absence of interleukin-8) and to their changes during the 24h-MI (absolute increase in milk flow rate and relative udder distension). Analysis of associations between milk yield responses, stage of lactation, parity, milk yield level, proteolysis, udder expansion and immune traits found three adaptive cow profile clusters. Cows in cluster 1 had a less compliant udder than cows in cluster 2, and they lost more milk during the 24h-MI than cluster-2 and cluster-3 cows. After resuming twice daily-milking (TDM), cluster-2 cows fully recovered the milk they had lost during the 24h-MI. On the opposite, cluster-3 cows did not recover the milk they lost, likely due to udder inflammation during cTDM, as suggested by elevated concentrations of interleukin-8 in their milk. These results combining new traits with stage of lactation, parity and milk yield level constitute a first step towards predicting individual cow responses to a 24h-MI.  相似文献

Milk progesterone analysis was used to monitor reproductive function in 134 autumn calving cross-bred suckler cows. Progesterone was measured in milk samples collected three times per week from around 4 week post-calving to around day 60 of pregnancy during 1st and 2nd lactation. The mean day of onset of luteal activity (OLA) was 40.7 +/- 1.1 with the distribution skewed towards a later return. Once cyclicity had been initiated the incidence of reproductive cycle problems (6.5%) was low, though animals with such problems (n = 14) exhibited a delayed interval to first service (P < 0.05), lower conception and calving rates (P < 0.001), increased services per pregnancy (P < 0.001) and a higher (P < 0.10) barren rate (14.3% versus 4.0%) compared to animals with normal cycles (n = 201). In conclusion, using milk progesterone analysis we found a relatively low incidence of reproductive cycle problems in beefxdairy suckler cows. However, while the incidence of cycle problems was low, those animals with problems showed significantly impaired reproductive function.  相似文献

Conception rates after timed artificial insemination (TAI) are of paramount importance for the success of protocols based on synchronization of ovulation. Stage of lactation and milk production level are known factors that influence dairy cow fertility. It was the objective of this study to analyse the effect of stage of lactation and milk production level on conception rates and pregnancy rates by 200 days in milk (DIM) in dairy cows synchronized with the Ovsynch protocol (Day -10, Day -1: 0.1 mg of D-Phe6-gonadorelin, Day -3: 0.5 mg of cloprostenol, Day 0: AI). A total of 1,288 dairy cows were assigned to two groups and classified in three production levels (high, average, low). Cows of all milk production levels in Group 1 (Simultaneous Ovsynch, SO) were synchronized with the Ovsynch protocol simultaneously for TAI between 73 and 81 DIM. In Group 2 cows with average milk production were synchronized at the same time as Group 1, while low producing cows were synchronized 3 weeks earlier and high producing cows were synchronized 3 weeks later than Group 1, respectively. First service conception rates (FSCRs) were lower (P<0.05) in cows synchronized earlier than in cows of the same production level synchronized later (low production: 14.4% (22/153) versus 34.5% (51/148); high production: 28.2% (40/142) versus 41.4% (53/128)). Milk production level had no significant impact on conception rates after TAI in cows synchronized at the same stage of lactation. At 200 DIM fewer cows with high production level were pregnant than cows with average or low production (P<0.05). This effect was independent of the stage of lactation at the initiation of Ovsynch. Endometritis at a postpartum examination did not influence conception rates after TAI. In conclusion, stage of lactation, but not milk production level, has a major influence on conception rates after TAI. Early AI after Ovsynch is less efficient and therefore its return on investment should be evaluated carefully.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to establish the effect of low-concentrate (LC) and high-concentrate (HC) supplementation in the early and late periods of lactation on milk production and cow traffic in a pasture-based automatic milking (AM) system. In total, 40 cows (10 primiparous and 30 multiparous) were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. The experimental periods for the early and late lactation trials extended from 23 February to 12 April 2015 and 31 August to 18 October 2015, respectively (49 days in each trial period). The early lactation supplement levels were 2.3 and 4.4 kg/cow per day for LC and HC, respectively, whereas the late lactation supplement levels were 0.5 and 2.7 kg/cow per day for LC and HC, respectively. Variables measured included milking frequency, milking interval, milking outcome and milking characteristics, milk yield/visit and per day, wait time/visit and per day, return time/visit and the distribution of gate passes. As the herd was seasonal (spring) calving, the experimental periods could not run concurrently and as a result no statistical comparison between the periods was conducted. There was no significant effect of treatment in the early lactation period on any of the milk production, milking characteristics or cow traffic variables. However, treatment did significantly affect the distribution of gate passes, with the HC cows recording significantly more gate passes in the hours preceding the gate time change such as hours 7 (P<0.01), 15 (P<0.05), 20, 21 (P<0.001), and 22 (P<0.05), whereas the LC treatment recorded significantly more gate passes in the hours succeeding the gate time change, such as time points 2 (P<0.01) and 10 (P<0.05). There was a significant effect of treatment in late lactation, with HC having a greater milk yield (P<0.01), milking duration and activity/day (P<0.05), while also having a significantly shorter milking interval (P<0.05) and return time/visit (P<0.01). The distribution of gate passes were similar to the early lactation period, with HC also recording a significantly greater number of gate passes during the early morning period (P<0.01) when visitations were at their lowest. Any decision regarding the supplementing of dairy cows with concentrates needs to be examined from an economic perspective, to establish if the milk production and cow traffic benefits displayed in late lactation outweigh the cost of the concentrate; thereby ensuring that the decision to supplement is financially prudent.  相似文献

Data from a randomized controlled field study of selective dry cow therapy were used in which 686 cows had been allocated to 2 control groups (sampling only or placebo) or 2 therapy groups. Possible factors from previous lactation were assessed in determining their association with the probability of ‘failure’, designated as a cow milk somatic cell count (CMSCC) of greater than 399000 per ml in geometric mean of several measurements during subsequent lactation. Success cows were those with a CMSCC of less than 200000 per ml. For our analyses, this targeted 187 success cows and 186 failure cows. Therapy was given as a total dose of 400000 IU penicillin and 100 mg neomycin per infected quarter as dry cow preparation once, or as a lactation formula with a total dose of 1.2 million IU penicillin and 1200 mg dihydrostreptomycin per infected quarter during a 1-week period. Significant factors in the predictive model for success included therapy, low level of CMSCC (geometric mean of the 3 last tests) in previous lactation, low level of CMSCC (weighted by daily milk yield mean) in the herd, young cows, and not having had a case of treatment for chronic clinical mastitis. Additional information on the probability of failure in treated and untreated cows can be predicted by number of quarters infected with Staphylococcus aureus approximately 1.5 months before drying off. The models derived are considered for use as tools in selective treatment and culling decisions.  相似文献

We examined short- and long-term effects of high milking frequency (HMF) for the first 21 days of lactation. The study included 122 Israeli Holstein cows – 32 pregnant heifers, 40 cows in second lactation and 50 cows in >second lactation. Heifers were paired according to predicted transmitting ability and cows according to energy-corrected milk (ECM) production, age, days in milk and expected calving date. Thin cows (body condition score <2.75) were not included. One cow from each pair was arbitrarily allocated to a control group milked three times daily (3× milking cows) and the counterpart to an experimental group milked six times daily for the first 21 days of lactation and then three times daily for the rest of the lactation (6× milking cows). During the first 21 days of lactation, 6× milking cows produced 9.3 kg more milk (26.5%) and 7.16 kg more ECM (19%) than the 3× milking cows. The higher milk production persisted throughout the entire lactation (305 days), as reflected by treatment×age interaction showing higher milk production for the first and second (7%) but not >second lactation cows relative to their control counterparts (−0.37%); ECM production was also higher in 6× milking first and second lactation (7.6% and 5%, respectively) but not for >second lactation cows. Furthermore, HMF had long-lasting effects, expressed as significantly higher milk production through the succeeding lactation in the previous first lactation cows (10%); a tendency toward significance in the second lactation cows relative to the controls (4.7%), but a deleterious effect on the >second lactation cows, reflected by lower milk production (−5.25%) than in controls; similar patterns were found for the ECM. For the entire 305 days of lactation, fat and protein yields were higher for first and second lactation cows, whereas protein yield for >second lactation cows was lower in the 6× milking v. control group. Given that HMF during the first 21 days of first or second lactation increases milk and ECM yields throughout the concurrent and successive lactation with no adverse effect on energy balance, mastitis, metabolic diseases or reproduction, it seems to be economically beneficial. However, caution should be paid for >second lactation cows due to absence of significant effect in the entire of the first HMF applied lactation and the deleterious effect in the succeeding lactation.  相似文献

Ten crossbred, fourth or fifth parity sows were divided into 2 groups - high (H) and low (L) - according to their backfat thickness 9 days before parturition. Body weight, backfat thickness and litter weight were recorded repeatedly during a 5 week lactation period. The length of the interval from weaning to first oestrus was also noted. All sows were fed a commercial diet (11.9 MJ/kg, 14.5% crude protein). During gestation, daily food intake was 2.2 kg/sow, while during lactation it was 3.0 kg/sow plus 0.4 kg/piglet. Blood samples were drawn on day 9 before parturition and on days 2,7,14 and 21 of lactation. The samples were analysed to determine concentrations of glucose, urea nitrogen, creatinine, triglycerides, free fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyric acid. In both groups, concentrations of free fatty acids and urea nitrogen were low on day 9 before parturition while those of triglycerides were high, indicating anabolism regardless of backfat thickness. During the first week of lactation, concentrations of free fatty acids increased in the H-group but not in the L-group, and concentrations of urea nitrogen were higher in the H-group. These differences, together with the greater loss of weight observed in the H-group, indicate that catabolism of maternal fat and protein depots was more pronounced in the Η-group than in the L-group during this time. On day 14 of lactation, both groups showed equally low concentrations of free fatty acids, decreasing creatinine concentrations and stable triglyceride and urea nitrogen concentrations. Furthermore, weight loss during the second and third weeks of lactation was low in both groups. These facts, taken together, indicate that the catabolic rate was decreasing in both groups during this period. No differences in return to oestrus interval were noted between the groups. The present study indicates that under a restricted feeding regime the catabolic rate during the first week of lactation is higher in sows with higher backfat thickness in late gestation. As lactation progresses, a more balanced metabolism is achieved regardless of backfat thickness, which may tend to reduce differences in return to oestrous interval.  相似文献

Associations were analysed between polymorphisms of the growth hormone gene (GH-MspI) (localized in intron 3) and milk production traits of Beijing Holstein cows (a total of 543 cows). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method was used for identification of various geno-types. Frequencies of genotypes were 0.77, 0,21 and 0.02 for A/A, A/B and B/B, respectively. The frequency of theGH A allele is 0.875. The results of the least squares means show that in all three lactations, theGH A/A cows yielded more milk (P < 0.01 for lactation I andP 0.05 for lactations II and III), whereas A/B cows showed higher milk fat content than A/A individuals (P < 0.05 for lactations I and II, andP < 0.01 for lactation III). The A/A cows yielded more fat than A/B individuals (P < 0.01 only in lactation I). The A/A cows yielded more milk protein than A/B individuals (P < 0.01 for lactations I, II, and III). The A/A cows produced milk of higher protein content than of A/B individuals (P < 0.05 only in lactation II).  相似文献

A study with high-yielding dairy cows was re-analysed in order to test the suitability of lucerne silage separately for primi- and multiparous cows as an alternative to grass silage in maize-based total mixed rations (TMR). Lactation curves were fitted using random regression test-day models for energy corrected milk (ECM) and dry matter intake (DMI) as well as for number and duration of feeder visits (NFV and DFV, respectively). Existing models for ECM and DMI were extended by animal-specific random effects, which were formulated in their dependency on days in milk. For NFV and DFV random regression models were applied for the very first time. The chosen approach of statistical analysis permitted comparisons of the lactation curves as well as of least square means for sub-periods to answer nutritional questions. Whilst primiparous cows had generally lower DMI and ECM as compared to multiparous cows, only in primiparous cows a negative effect of lucerne TMR on ECM was observed, especially in early lactation. Nutritional factors should be rejected because of very similar ECM between the various TMR in multiparous cows. Traits of feeding behaviour indicated that particle size could contribute to the decreased ECM. Even more impact on the lower ECM should be addressed to domination behaviour of multiparous cows. The resulting restlessness of primiparous cows caused a reduced intake per minute spent at the feeder. Further studies should focus on optimising the proportion and chopping length of lucerne in the diet and to improve flock management to maximise feed intake of primiparous cows. Generally, statistical analysis of lactation data became a very complex issue. It seems inevitable that nutritionists and statisticians team up to address this problem.  相似文献

A large number of environmental factors affect the daily milk production of a cow. Lactation curves included in the French test-day model are modelled as a function of days in milk with semi-parametric curves (splines). The proper modelling of environmental effects in the test-day analysis was investigated using test-day records collected from the first three lactations of French Montbéliarde cows from 1988 to 2005. Four lactation-curve effects describing calving month, length of dry period, age at calving and gestation defined within parity-class were fitted. The shape of lactation curves did not depend on year of calving, which can be modelled as a constant over the whole lactation. To reduce computational requirements and time, data were pre-adjusted in a first step for fixed effects with no year interaction, and then used for genetic evaluation. Correlations for each lactation between 305-day estimates of genetic and permanent environment effects computed using pre-adjustment factors obtained at a 4-year interval were virtually one. The use of a two-step procedure had a very limited impact on the estimates of genetic and permanent environment effects. The minimum correlations with values estimated with a one-step procedure were 0.9984 and 0.9974, respectively. The knowledge of systematic environmental effects affecting the cow daily yield through lactation curves offers interesting perspectives to predict future daily milk production.  相似文献

The objective was to identify postpartum risk factors between nutritional imbalance and health disorders affecting first-service conception risk (FSCR) in 21 commercial Holstein herds in Reunion Island. Multivariate logistic-regression models including herd as a random effect were used to analyze the relationship between FSCR and energy status, nitrogen status, hepatic function, mineral deficiencies, and postpartum health disorders. Two models (A and B) were built on two subsets of data (n=446 and n=863) with risk indicators measured during the first month of lactation and around time of first service, respectively, adjusted for season, breed, parity, origin, milk yield, calving to first service interval (CS1), and type of estrus (spontaneous vs. induced). The averaged conception risk was 0.266+/-0.015 (n=913) (mean+/-S.E.M.). In both models, FSCR was decreased by CS1 < or = 60 d and induced estrus. In model A, FSCR was decreased (p<0.05) for cows with mean cumulative 100 d daily milk yield < or =23 kg/d and >27 kg/d, with losses of body condition score >1.5, and with retained placenta. In model B, FSCR was decreased (p<0.05) for cows inseminated during wet season, previously raised out of the farm as nulliparous, with blood magnesium concentration < or =0.9 mmol/L, and for high-yielding cows (100 d milk yield > 27 kg/d) with glutamate deshydrogenase>17 UI/L. Hence, high-body-lipid mobilization during the first month of lactation was a strong nutritional predictor of low FSCR together with liver damage in high-yielding cows. Interestingly, our models revealed that infertility is better related to nutritional factors than to postpartum health disorders occurrence.  相似文献

To assess endocrine and morphological responses of ovaries to total weaning at parturition, 6 Zebu (Bos indicus) cows 5 years or older were investigated. Following parturition, blood samples were collected daily during the first month and twice weekly thereafter until day 60 to determine concentrations of progesterone (P4) and prostaglandin F2α metabolite. It took between 25 to 32 days to complete uterine involution. The prostaglandin metabolite remained elevated for a mean period of 14.2 days (range, 4-21) postpartum. Five of the animals resumed cyclicity with a short estrous cycle starting between days 7 to 34 and lasting between 7 and 14 days. No estrous behavior was recorded prior to the short estrous cycles, but subsequent normal-length estrous cycles were all preceded by signs of estrus. In the 1 animal that resumed cyclicity with an estrous cycle of normal length on day 37 (length 20 days), the cycle was preceded by estrous behavior. Progesterone concentrations reached a mean maximum of 4.8 nmol liter−1 during the short estrous cycles, and prostaglandin metabolite concentrations peaked while P4 concentrations were decreasing. P4 concentrations reached a mean maximum of 12.2 nmol liter−1 during the estrous cycles of normal length. The interval from parturition to the first estrous cycle of normal length varied between 16 and 48 days, and the length of the cycle was 18 to 22 days. Starting 2 days postpartum, ovaries from 5 of the cows were scanned by ultrasonography every second day until day 30 postpartum. Medium-sized follicles were detected between days 4 to 7 postpartum in 4 of the scanned cows that later had short estrous cycles. The time between parturition and the appearance of the first dominant follicle was 7.6 days (range 6-10 days). The interval between parturition and the appearance of the first ovulatory-sized follicle was 10.2 days (range 8-13 days). In 3 of the scanned cows this ovulatory-sized follicle ovulated. We conclude that cyclic ovarian activity in Zebu cows can start early in the postpartum period in the absence of offspring, and that short luteal phases, not preceded by estrous behavior, may play an important role in establishing normal postpartum ovarian activity.  相似文献
