Synopsis Experiments with the Danube bleak, Chalcalburnus chalcoides mento, an obligatory planktivore, were carried out to test some basic assumptions of foraging theory regarding prey selection. The results of experiments in which two prey types were offered simultaneously were compared with results of corresponding experiments with single prey types. Although the fish always selected for the more profitable prey they always did far worse than theoretical predictions. Selectivity cannot compensate for the costs accruing from the presence of alternate prey. Under conditions which are closer to natural prey assemblages, characterized by low densities of highly profitable prey, the inability to cope adequately with a mixed prey supply may be of little disadvantage. Because of relatively low locomotion costs, patch selection may be more important than prey selection for optimizing feeding.  相似文献

Summary The accurate estimation of the amount of energy contained within a food item which is available to a predator is essential in tests of optimal foraging theories. Many studies of optimal foraging measure gross energy content of prey directly by bomb calorimetry. I suggest that a more realistic and accurate estimate of true prey value is available by calculating energy associated with the organic constituents of prey, and then subtracting away energy associated with insoluble and indigestible components. This methodology allows for a much more precise estimate of prey value (useable energy) and therefore a more realistic test of optimal foraging models.  相似文献

Summary We examined the influence of satiation level, prey density and light intensity on food uptake rate through the ontogeny of Haplochromis piceatus. Prey handling in the buccal cavity was found to be the main factor limiting prey uptake rate under light circumstances and at a sufficiently high prey density. Food uptake rate per unit body weight of different sizes of H. piceatus was equal when feeding on Chaoborus but decreased with increasing fish size when feeding on Daphnia magna. In choice experiments with Chaoborus and D. magna, prey selection by H. piceatus of all sizes was according to the predictions based on Charnov's 1976 model.  相似文献

Summary The presence and extent of sexual dimorphisms in body form (size and shape) of adult macroteiid lizards were investigated. Males were significantly larger than females in the temperate species, Cnemidophorus tigris, and in the tropical species, Ameiva ameiva and C. ocellifer. Young adult C. tigris males grew faster than young adult females within and between reproductive seasons. Adult males of all species had larger heads than adult females of the same body size; this difference increased with body size. Moreover, male C. tigris were heavier than females of the same snout-vent length. The causes and consequences of the sexual dimorphisms were also examined. The possible causes of body size are especially numerous, and distinguishing the relative influences of the various causal selection factors on body size is problematical. Nevertheless, observational field data were used to tentatively conclude that intrasexual selection was the cause of larger body size of C. tigris males relative to females because (1) larger males won in male aggressive interactions, (2) the winning males gained access to more females by repelling competitors and by female acceptance, (3) larger males consequently had higher reproductive success, and (4) other hypothetical causes of larger male size were unsupported.  相似文献

Japanese cormorants, Phalacrocorax capillatus, are sexually dimorphic seabirds with males that are heavier and that dive deeper than females. Sex differences in prey composition and foraging behavior of those rearing chicks at Teuri Island, Hokkaido, were examined by collecting food-loads from parents in 1992–1998 and by radio-tracking ten birds each in 1997 and 1998 when prey availability was different. Males fed more on benthic and epibenthic fishes (82% mass) than did females (34%) while females fed more on epipelagic and coastal fishes (53%) than did males (18%). Males made longer dives (53 s) at feeding sites closer to the island (7 km) than females (39 s, 13 km) in 1997. In 1998 when the availability of epipelagic fish seemed to be higher, there were no sex differences in dive duration and distance to the feeding sites (35 s and 9 km for males, 36 s and 10 km for females). This sex difference in foraging behavior with a poor availability of epipelagic fish suggests that high diving ability possibly enables males to feed on demersal fish. Birds specializing in coastal shallow waters around the island made long dives; hence they were probably foraging in bottom layers. The distribution of organisms within a community can often be determined by the degree of plasticity or degree of specialization of resource acquisition. Resource acquisition is often based on the morphology of an organism, behavior, or a combination of both. Performance tests of feeding can identify the possible interactions that allow one species to better exploit a prey item. Scavenging behaviors in the presence or absence of a competitor were investigated by quantifying prey selection in a trophic generalist, spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias, and a trophic specialist, smooth-hounds Mustelus canis, in order to determine if each shark scavenged according to its jaw morphology. The diet of dogfish consists of small fishes, squid, ctenophores, and bivalves; they are expected to be nonselective predators. Smooth-hounds primarily feed on crustaceans; therefore, they are predicted to select crabs over other prey types. Prey selection was quantified by ranking each prey item according to the order it was consumed. Dietary shifts were analyzed by comparing the percentage of each prey item selected during solitary versus competitive scavenging. When scavenging alone, dogfish prefer herring and squid, which are easily handled by the cutting dentition of dogfish. Dogfish shift their diet to include a greater number of prey types when scavenging with a competitor. Smooth-hounds scavenge on squid, herring, and shrimp when alone, but increase the number of crabs in the diet when scavenging competitively. Competition causes smooth-hounds to scavenge according to their jaw morphology and locomotor abilities, which enables them to feed on a specialized resource [Current Zoology 56 (1): 100-108 2010].  相似文献

Food-choice was investigated in a social group of 16 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) maintained in a large outdoor compound. Three feeding stations located along the periphery of the compound were considered analogous to food patches. Color-coded aluminum panels temporarily covered each feeding apparatus, with one color corresponding to nonpreferred food (commercial biscuits) available at two locations and other colors corresponding to the certain or uncertain availability of preferred food (oranges) available at one location. Only nine chimpanzees met the criterion for learning the color/food associations and thus only those animals were included in the analysis. There was a significant decrease in choosing the station associated with oranges when the probability of availability of oranges was reduced from 0.5 to 0.1 but not from 1.0 to 0.5. In addition, there was a significant increase in the frequency with which the subjects made no choice when the probability of availability of oranges was reduced from 1.0 to 0.1. The data indicate that the uncertain availability of preferred food in a choice situation affects choice behavior in a social group of chimpanzees studied under controlled conditions.  相似文献

Sexual differences in habitat preferences have been reported from a variety of animal taxa. However, the ultimate causes for this intersexual niche segregation remain poorly understood. It has been suggested that sexual dimorphism is a consequence of dimorphic niches based upon different reproductive costs and activities of the sexes. Here we provide evidence from field data to examine this hypothesis by studying the behavioral background of niche segregation in Tetrix ceperoi. Our data revealed distinct sexual differences in the substrates on which the insects perched and in the solar radiation of these locations. Males were found at brighter locations and more often on bare ground than females. Incorporation of behavioral data in our analysis showed that patches of bare ground were mainly utilized during mating behavior, in which males invested more time than females. In contrast, females spent more time resting and feeding in the vegetation. Intersexual differences in the proportion of autotomized individuals indicate that males might suffer higher predation risks. These patterns support the dimorphic niches hypothesis, which suggests that differential habitat utilization is caused by differences in the life history strategies of males and females, since males should accept a higher predation risk due to the benefits of multiple matings. Females should invest more time in gaining nutrients and energy for egg production and survival, whereas males should spend more time with searching for mates. We suggest that behavioral covariates should more often be implemented in ecological analyses, since these might have a strong explanatory power.  相似文献

The significance of elongation of the first and second spines of the first dorsal fin in male Eviota abax (Gobiidae) was examined in relation to female preference. Reproductive behavior occurred in three phases: male approach to female home, male leading female to nest, and male entering nest. During each phase, the female either accompanied the male or departed. The ratio of positive female mating responses to males before the elongated male dorsal spines were clipped and thereafter was compared in an aquarium. Females preferred male elongated spines in the first phase of courtship, but not in the second phase . Because females may be more exposed to predators during the second phase, owing to conspicuous male courtship, their greater receptivity to elongated dorsal spines in the first phase may decrease predation pressures during subsequent phases of courtship. During reproduction, seabirds need to balance the demands of self- and offspring-provisioning within the constraints imposed by central place foraging. To assess behavioral adjustments and tolerances to these constraints, we studied the feeding tactics and reproductive success of common murres (also known as common guillemots) Uria aalge , at their largest and most offshore colony (Funk Island) where parents travel long distances to deliver a single capelin Mallotus villosus to their chicks. We assessed changes in the distance murres traveled from the colony, their proximate foraging locations and prey size choice during two successive years in which capelin exhibited an order of magnitude decrease in density and a shift from aggregated (2004) to dispersed (2005) distributions. When capelin availability was low (2005), parental murres increased their maximum foraging distances by 35% (60 to 81 km) and delivered significantly larger capelin to chicks, as predicted by central place foraging theory. Murres preferred large (>140 mm) relative to small capelin (100–140 mm) in both years, but unexpectedly this preference increased as the relative density of large capelin decreased. We conclude that single prey-loading murres target larger capelin during long foraging trips as parents are 'forced' to select the best prey for their offspring. Low fledgling masses suggest also that increased foraging time when capelin is scarce may come at a cost to the chicks (i.e. fewer meals per day). Murres at this colony may be functioning near physiological limits above which further or sustained adjustments in foraging effort could compromise the life-time reproductive success of this long-lived seabird.  相似文献

Summary The relationship between relative body condition (deviation from expected mean body weight) and burying depth was investigated in five macro-zoo benthic species living in a marine intertidal habitat. Body weight increased with depth when animals of the same size were compared. The increase amounted to 50% in the clamScrobicularia plana, ca. 40% in the wormNereis diversicolor, 25% in the clamMacoma balthica and 20% in the cockleCerastoderma edule and the clamMya arenaria. Only a part of the prey was within reach of some feeding wader species. Therefore prey value may be overestimated if one does not take into account the fact that shallow and accessible prey often have a relatively poor body condition.  相似文献

In dioecious plants, differences in growth traits between sexes in a response to micro-environmental heterogeneity may affect sex ratio bias and spatial distributions. Here, we examined sex ratios, stem growth traits and spatial distribution patterns in the dioecious clonal shrub Aucuba japonica var. borealis, in stands with varying light intensities. We found that male stems were significantly more decumbent (lower height/length ratio) but female stems were upright (higher height/length ratio). Moreover, we found sex-different response in stem density (no. of stems per unit area) along a light intensity gradient; in males the stem density increased with increases in canopy openness, but not in females. The higher sensitivity of males in increasing stem density to light intensity correlated with male-biased sex ratio; fine-scale sex ratio was strongly male-biased as canopy openness increased. There were also differences between sexes in spatial distributions of stems. Spatial segregation of sexes and male patches occupying larger areas than female patches might result from vigorous growth of males under well-lit environments. In summary, females and males showed different growth responses to environmental variation, and this seemed to be one of possible causes for the sex-differential spatial distributions and locally biased sex ratios.  相似文献

静坐在球型网的中心,蜘蛛可能遭受天敌的攻击并暴露在不利的天气条件下,如风和雨。然而,栖居于网的中心使蜘蛛比隐藏在隐蔽场所中的蜘蛛能更迅速地察觉并捕获猎物,这是因为猎物的位置仅能被位于网中心的蜘蛛所确定。对在隐蔽场所中的蜘蛛而言,提高对猎物捕获率的方式之一是尽量减少隐蔽所与网中心的距离。而且,网中心与隐蔽所之间较短的距离使蜘蛛能更迅速地逃离危险境况。我使用既在网中心、又在隐蔽场所的硬类肥蛛(Larinioides sclopetarius Clerck),来检验这两种行为如何影响对猎物的捕获成功率。隐藏在隐蔽场所中的蜘蛛更经常忽略猎物,使猎物也有比较多的逃离机会,这样,与在网中心的蜘蛛相比,猎物的损失率就更高。另外,研究了隐蔽场所的位置对球型网图案的影响。在大多数球型网中,网中心上方的区域比网下方小,丝也比较少,形成了结构不对称的网;隐蔽场所通常在网的上方。当隐蔽场所的位置在实验中被倒转时,就形成了非典型的球型网。最后,L.sclopetarius建造的网有很突出的边缘非对称性,与隐蔽场所相邻的区域面积较小,而远离隐蔽场所的区域面积较大,这也可解释为减少了隐蔽场所和网中心之间的距离[动物学报50(4):559-565.2004]。  相似文献

Understanding the behavioural mechanisms that underlie prey size preference of predators is an essential component of unravelling the processes that govern predator-prey dynamics. In marine systems, despite being able to consume larger and more profitable prey, many molluscivorous predators show a preference for smaller, less profitable prey, most likely to minimize the risk of damaging feeding extremities. Here we assessed the flexibility of this prey size preference. We observed that shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) that were food deprived, and which were offered mussels (Mytilus edulis) of different sizes in dichotomous preference tests, preferred smaller, less profitable mussels. The same result was observed for crabs foraging with a conspecific competitor. Only crabs that were conditioned to feed on the larger, most profitable mussels shifted their prey size preference and ranked the most profitable mussels as highest. Although shore crabs showed flexibility in prey size preference, through which they would be able to cope with environmental variability, our results in general emphasize preference for smaller prey. We discuss the possibility that crabs maximize their long-term feeding rate, in which case it can be optimal to select these smaller mussels.  相似文献

Summary Previous studies have shown that adult and juvenile six-lined racerunners, Cnemidophorus sexlineatus, consume different sizes and taxa of arthropod prey. the purpose of this study was to determine if these differences could be explained in terms of energy cost and benefit parameters as related by the optimal diet model. Handling times and encounter rates with each of five categories of prey were determined by direct observation of lizard foraging behavior in the field. Energetic cost of search and energy content of prey were estimated from data in the literature. Mean values of all these parameters were used in the classic optimal diet model to determine which prey types yield the greatest rate of net energy gain for adult and juvenile racerunners. Grasshopper-like insects were the most valuable prey for adults, whereas plant and ground arthropods were the most valuable prey for juveniles. These findings correspond to the age-class specific diet differences.Each age-class adopts foraging tactics that increase the chance of finding the most valuable prey. Adult racerunners move hastily over a large area to find the relatively rare, but large and mobile grasshopper prey. Juveniles move much more slowly, and carefully investigate twigs and leaves to find smaller, cryptic plant and ground arthropods. However these foraging tactics do not preclude the taking of less valuable prey items, should they be encountered. This is because it is energetically better on average to eat the prey item rather than skipping it to search for better prey, except for the case of juvenile racerunners eating grasshoppers. That juvenile racerunners will attempt to capture and consume even very large grasshoppers is contrary to the expectations derived from the optimal diet model. This behavior may be the result of the foraging rule of thumb racerunners use to find their prey.  相似文献

The Japanese filefish Paramonacanthus japonicus has extreme sexual dimorphism in its overall shape, even though its mating system is monogamy with biparental care. This sexual dimorphism is mainly due to the development of secondary sexual traits in males. Males become more slender in body with elevated soft dorsal and anal fins as they mature. We examined the function of such male secondary sexual traits by field research and fluid-dynamic analysis. Underwater observations showed that movement rate and steady swimming speed of males were higher than those of females. Male and female P. japonicus showed similar feeding habits and egg-tending behavior, although males attacked potential egg predators more frequently. A wind-tunnel experiment using the air bearing and spring system showed that the drag coefficient of males was significantly lower than that of females, indicating a lower male hydrodynamic drag performance. Also, male elevated soft dorsal and anal fins are considered to give rise to higher thrust performance in monacanthids. Thus, these results suggest that male secondary sexual traits are hydrodynamic devices for enhancing swimming performance that seem to be actually functional under natural conditions. The tendency of animals to seek instant gratification instead of waiting for greater long-term benefits has been described as impatient, impulsive or lacking in self-control. How can we explain the evolution of such seemingly irrational behaviour? Here we analyse optimal behaviour in a variety of simple choice situations involving delayed rewards. We show that preferences for more immediate rewards should depend on a variety of factors, including whether the choice is a one-off or is likely to be repeated, the information the animal has about the continuing availability of the rewards and the opportunity to gain rewards through alternative activities. In contrast to the common assertion that rational animals should devalue delayed rewards exponentially, we find that this pattern of discounting is optimal only under restricted circumstances. We predict preference reversal whenever waiting for delayed rewards entails loss of opportunities elsewhere, but the direction of this reversal depends on whether the animal will face the same choice repeatedly. Finally, we question the ecological relevance of standard laboratory tests for impulsive behaviour, arguing that animals rarely face situations analogous to the self-control paradigm in their natural environment. To understand the evolution of impulsiveness, a more promising strategy would be to identify decision rules that are adaptive in a realistic ecological setting, and examine how these rules determine patterns of behaviour in simultaneous choice tests.  相似文献

Summary Observations of the foraging behavior of six captive dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) are used to test the assumptions and predictions of optimal diet choice models (Pyke et al. 1977) that include nutrients (Pulliam 1975). The birds sequentially encountered single seeds of niger thistle (Guizotia abyssinica) and of canary grass (Phalaris canariensis) on an artificial substrate in the laboratory. Niger thistle seeds were preferred by all birds although their profitability in terms of energy intake (J/s) was less than the profitability of canary grass seeds. Of four nutritional components used to calculate profitabilities (mg/s) lipid content was the only characteristic that could explain the junco's seed preference. As predicted by optimal diet theory the probability of consuming niger thistle seeds was independent of seed abundance. However, the consumption of 71–84% rather than 100% of the seeds encountered is not consistent with the prediction of all-or-nothing selection. Canary grass seeds were consumed at a constant rate (no./s) independent of the number of seeds encountered. This consumption pattern invalidates a model that assumes strict maximization. However, it is consistent with the assumption that canary grass seeds contain a nutrient which is required in minimum amounts to meet physiological demands (Pulliam 1975). These experiments emphasize the importance of incorporating nutrients into optimal foraging models and of combining seed preference studies with studies of the metabolic requirements of consumers.  相似文献
