The relative importance of predation risk and food quality on spatial grazing pressure and activity patterns was tested in a central-place foraging herbivore: the European rabbit. Rabbits grazed less with increasing distance from their burrows into adjacent grassland, thereby creating a gradient of increasing vegetation height and plant biomass and decreasing plant nutrient concentration. When nitrogen concentration was experimentally increased by 150% through fertilizing and mowing, rabbits visited these plots four times more frequently than the untreated control plots. Addition of predator scent (mink pellets) did not result in different patch use by rabbits. The combined addition of fertilizer and mink pellets had the same effect as addition of fertilizer alone. However, the mink pellets changed the temporal activity pattern of rabbits as measured with infrared detectors. Rabbits were predominantly nocturnal but shifted their activities to the day when mink pellets were added, resulting in equal activities during night and day. We conclude that rabbits are sensitive to perceived predation risk, but that this does not influence their spatial grazing pressure. A selection for the highest food quality on the other hand can explain the observed natural rabbit grazing gradient. Food quality was highest close to the burrows, therefore rabbits selecting for high quality food should forage most intensely close to the burrows and only move further away for higher quality items or when the vegetation close to their burrows is depleted. Through intensive grazing close to the burrows rabbits facilitated for themselves either through stimulating fresh protein rich re-growth or the return of nutrients through faeces or both. This is in contrast with central-place foraging theory where intense feeding close to the burrow is assumed to lead to reduced food resources.  相似文献

To more closely simulate the diet of free-ranging elephants, the diet of six (2.4) African elephants (Loxodonta africana) was altered to include more browse and less pelleted complete feed (5% total diet). Dietary proximate compounds, minerals, vitamins A (and carotenoids), D and E, and fatty acids were analyzed on pelleted diet items and forages including hay, grass, and browse. A total of 42 browse species were offered over 1 year with an average total diet inclusion of 5.2% (dry matter basis) per day. Dietary Na and Se were low while Fe and Mn were high compared to published intake levels for elephants. Analyzed nutrients within browse varied widely among seasons and species. Ingredient analyses were used to create predicted elephant nutrient intake for (a) the current diet, (b) a diet excluding pellets, and (c) a diet excluding pellets and providing browse at doubled levels. Formulated diets excluding pellets had lower mineral levels than the current diet and doubled browse did not alter mineral inclusions of concern. This study provides seasonal data on the nutrient levels of Southeastern browse species important for various pachyderm and herbivorous species. Predicted nutrient intake with new diet scenarios does not support the exclusion of pellets in the diets of African elephants without greater browse quantity availability, strict diet management, or additional supplements.  相似文献

Surgical ligation of chick ceca was used to study the role of absorption and extraintestinal transport in the action of anticoccidial drugs. The administration of drugs in the feed was started after ligation of one of the paried ceca. Birds were inoculated orally with oocysts of Eimeria tenella before cecal ligation or were given bilateral cecal injections of sporozoites after ligation. Cecal lesions caused by the coccidia were evaluated and compared on day 6 postinoculation. Lesions in ligated and unligated ceca were reduced by feeding robenidine (33 ppm), arprinocid (70 ppm), zoalene (125 ppm), aklomide (250 ppm), clopidol (125 ppm), nicarbazin (125 ppm), monensin (120 ppm), salinomycin (60 ppm), and lasalocid (75 ppm). The lesions were more severe in the ligated cecum than in the intact cecum, whether in nonmedicated or medicated birds, but the differences were statistically significant only upon treatment with amprolium, aklomide, robenidine, and clopidol. Generally, however, all drugs except amprolium, significantly reduced the lesions in the ligated cecum in comparison with the control, nonmedicated ligated cecum. Therefore, we concluded that the systemic absorption of most anticoccidial drugs contributes significantly to their efficacy against coccidia in the intestinal mucosa.  相似文献

Peanut hull (peanut pods and waste materials from processing of peanuts) was pelleted through a 3/16-in. (4.76 mm) diameter die. The effect of change in moisture content (4.2-21.2%, wet basis) of the pellets (due to exposure of the pellets to low or high humidity storage environments) on physical properties were measured. Pelleting increased the bulk density of the peanut hull from 151 kg/m(3) to more than 600 kg/m(3). Bulk density, particle density and durability of the pelleted peanut hull of pellets were significantly affected by moisture content attained by the pellets during exposure to the low or high humidity environment. Air relative humidity significantly influenced the rate at which the pellets exchange moisture with the environment while air temperature did not. The values of the constants of the GAB model were obtained from moisture sorption isotherm at 25 degrees C.  相似文献

Prey selection and growth efficiency of juvenile sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka switched between live prey and pelleted diets were investigated. First feeding sockeye salmon fry were placed into one of three dietary treatments for 7 months prior to assessing potential differences with a growth and a behavioural assay. Dietary treatments were (1) adult Artemia franciscana for 1 month, followed by pelleted feed for an additional 6 months ( Art − BD), (2) pelleted feed from first feeding for 7 months (BD) and (3) adult A. franciscana for 1 month, and a combination of pelleted feed and live adult A. franciscana for 6 months ( Art + BD). Equal numbers from each treatment group were then tagged, pooled into replicate 'common garden' tanks and fed novel live prey items ( Daphnia sp. and mosquito Culex pipiens larvae) for an additional 3 weeks. No significant differences in the growth efficiency of sockeye salmon were found during the 3 week feeding trial on the novel prey items. Additional sockeye salmon from each dietary treatment were used in a behavioural assay to determine if the treatments had an impact on foraging efficiency (prey selection or time to capture prey). No significant differences in prey selection were found among treatment groups in time to capture pellets, A. franciscana or mosquito larvae. Also, no significant differences were found within treatment groups in time to capture different food sources. No substantive benefits in foraging efficiency of sockeye salmon associated with prior exposure to live prey were demonstrated. This suggests that altering existing hatchery practices for juvenile sockeye salmon by offering live food prior to release is unlikely to influence post-hatchery feeding behaviour or increase post-release survival.  相似文献

The ability of young rabbits to digest a solid diet was evaluated according to the weaning age: 21 (W21, 12 litters) or 35 (W35, 12 litters) days of age. From 14 days onwards, the rabbits were fed the same pelleted feed. Three methods were compared to estimate the faecal digestibility in the young rabbits, between 24 to 28 and 38 to 42 days. Digestive balance at ileal and faecal levels was determined for the main nutrients provided by milk and solid feed. The W21 rabbits increased their solid feed intake only 2 days after their weaning, when compared with suckling rabbits. Thus, their crude protein (CP) intake remained lower until 26 days compared with the W35 rabbits (from 41%, P < 0.01), as well as their crude fat intake until 28 days (from 72%, P < 0.001). On the contrary, the W35 rabbits increased their solid feed intake without a delay after weaning, quickly reaching the intake level of the W21 rabbits. The amounts of organic matter (OM) and CP reaching the caecum were increased on day 28 by 56% and 42% in the W21 rabbits compared with the W35 rabbits, respectively (P < 0.05), and were similar between groups on day 42. Starch ileal digestibility coefficients were 94·2% and 95·4% in 28- and 42-day-old rabbits, respectively, irrespective of the weaning age. The amount of starch flowing through the ileo-caecal junction was low and only tended to be higher on day 28 in the W21 group (0.20 v. 0.15 g/day in the W35 group, P = 0.10). The digestive balance pointed out that the digestible energy intake was similar between weaned and suckling rabbits from 23 to 27 days, a phenomenon partly explained by a high ability of the W21 rabbits to digest starch (98%) and NDF (36%). Indeed, the amounts of starch and NDF digested by the W21 group were 2.0- and 2.4-fold higher than those of the W35 rabbits at this period (P < 0.001). However, they ate 20% less digestible proteins than still-suckling rabbits (P < 0.001). From 38 till 42 days, only a lower ability of the W21 rabbits to digest lipids was detected (P < 0.05). In conclusion, early-weaned rabbits were able to adapt quickly to digest large amounts of starch and fibres.  相似文献

A review of past literature revealed inconsistencies in recommended feed particle size for optimal growth and productive performance of rabbits. Changing diet formulation and subsequent processing conditions may improve pellet texture and potentially affect rabbit performance. In the current study, two isoenergetic and isonitrogenous pelleted diets were formulated, which varied in the particle size of the concentrates (2 and 8 mm, respectively). The objective was to evaluate the effect of different particle sizes of compound diets on performance, nutrient utilisation, gut morphology, and carcass characteristics of fattening Italian White breed rabbits. The finely ground diet led to a significant improvement in feed efficiency and apparent digestibility of crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre and NDF, without any negative effect on gut morphology. Furthermore, a smaller particle size of concentrates in pelleted diets improved carcass traits. Meat colour parameters showed significant differences in longissimus lumborum and biceps femoris due to dietary treatments, but in both muscles pH values 1 h and 24 h after slaughter remained unchanged. It is concluded that a finely ground pelleted diet can be used to improve growth performance of rabbits without affecting carcass parameters.  相似文献

The chemotherapeutic efficacy of 6 in-feed compounds against Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet, 1876 was assessed using experimental infections of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) fingerlings. Trial doses of 104 ppm amprolium hydrochloride or 65 ppm clopidol fed to fish for 10 d prior to infection significantly reduced the number of trophonts establishing in trout fingerlings by 62.0 and 35.2% respectively. In-feed treatments of infected trout with either 63 or 75 ppm amprolium hydrochloride, 92 ppm clopidol, or 38, 43 or 47 ppm salinomycin sodium for 10 d also significantly reduced the number of surviving trophonts by 77.6 and 32.2% for amprolium, 20.1% for clopidol and 80.2, 71.9 and 93.3% respectively for salinomycin sodium.  相似文献

Abstract

Caged New Zealand white rabbits were examined for the development, and prevention, of a learned aversion to toxic feed. Two familiar feeds were offered. One feed, a paste, contained sublethal amounts of sodium monofluoroacetate (1080); the other feed, cereal‐based pellets, was unpoisoned. On initial poisoning, consumption of both feeds decreased, but more markedly for the 1080‐dosed pastes. Suppressed feed consumption was observed for several days and may have been illness induced. A second poisoning elicited a significant depression of consumption of pastes but not pellets. The addition of a mixture of certain drugs (neurotransmitter antagonists) to the poisoned paste appeared to prevent the characteristic depression of this paste intake. We speculate that the drugs disrupted the associative process linking 1080 to recognisable attributes of the toxin or bait itself.

The implications of these results on aversion formation in rabbits and pest control are discussed.  相似文献

One hundred and four rabbits, five weeks old at the beginning of the experiment, were divided into four groups according to a feed additive treatment. Rabbits of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th group were fed a basal granulated feed (control), basal feed supplemented with CuSO4 · 5H2O at 50mg Cu · kg‐1, basal feed supplemented with 150mg Cu · kg‐1, and the latter feed supplemented with 100mg · kg‐1 vitamin E, respectively. The duration of the experiment was 42 days. Addition of Cu at 150mg · kg.‐1 increased weight gain non‐significantly by 9.1%. This effect was the most pronounced in the first two weeks of fattening. The lowest mortality was observed in rabbits fed the highest amount of additives (7.7% vs. 19.2% in the control). Rabbits were slaughtered at the age of 11 weeks. Neither treatment influenced proportions of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in lipids extracted from the loin and hindleg muscles. In rabbits fed the highest amount of copper and vitamin E, the cholesterol concentration was significantly decreased by 13.6% and 17.9% in the loin and hindleg meat, respectively. Effects of Cu added at 50mg · kg‐1 were marginal. Copper had no effect on the oxidative stability of meat, measured as thiobarbituric acid‐reactive substances in meat stored at 4°C for 0, 3 and 8 days. Vitamin E added in excess of nutritional requirement improved the oxidative stability of meat. In copper‐fed rabbits, Cu accumulated in the liver, but not in muscles. Feeding of the basal feed for 7 days to rabbits previously fed copper sulphate decreased the hepatic Cu concentration by 14.0 to 24.4%  相似文献

A total of one hundred and eighty-four New Zealand White rabbits were used in three separate experiments: to establish the concentration of sodium hydroxide solution needed to improve the nutritive quality of sawdust for rabbit feeding; to investigate whether there is any difference between the nutritive quality of hardwood- or softwood-sawdust when treated with optimum sodium hydroxide solution; and to study the extent to which NaOH-treated sawdust can be substituted for the conventional feeds in rabbit diets.Food consumption was significantly (P < 0.05) greater in rabbits given diets containing sawdust treated with 6% solutions of NaOH, than with sawdust treated with 0–3% solutions. Rabbits given sawdust treated with 4 or 5% NaOH showed significantly (P < 0.05) better rate of gain and efficiency of feed utilization than those given sawdust treated with 0 or 1% sodium hydroxide solutions, and also grew slightly, but non-significantly, faster than those fed on sawdust treated with 3 and 6% NaOH.Alkali treatment of sawdust increased carcass yield. Hardwood-responded better than softwood-sawdust to alkali treatment, and a higher concentration of alkali may be required for the latter. Rabbits may tolerate and efficiently utilize up to 15% of treated sawdust without any reduction in performance. Beyond this level, there was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the rate of gain, feed/gain ratio and carcass yield.  相似文献

Prevotella bryantii cultures treated with monensin grew more slowly than untreated cultures, but only if the monensin concentration was greater than 1 microM. Cultures that were repeatedly transferred (eight transfers or 25 doublings) with monensin always grew rapidly, even at a 10 microM concentration. The amount of monensin needed to facilitate half-maximal potassium depletion (K(d)) from monensin-selected cells was 16-fold greater than "unadapted" wild-type cultures (3,200 versus 200 nM). Cells taken from continuous culture had a K(d) of 100 nM, and these inocula could not grow in batch culture when the monensin concentration was greater than 300 nM. Continuous cultures treated with monensin nearly washed out, but the surviving cells had a K(d) of 1,300 nM. When wild-type cells were transferred in batch culture with 10 microM monensin, the K(d) did not reach its maximum value (3,200 nM) until after eight transfers (25 doublings). K(d) declined when monensin was removed, and it took eight transfers to reach the control value (200 nM). The most probable number of wild-type cells was 1,000-fold lower than of the monensin-selected cells, but calculations based on relative growth advantage and K(d) indicated that the wild-type culture had 1 to 10% highly monensin-resistant cells. Cell pellets of wild-type cultures were more difficult to disperse than were monensin-selected cells, and water-soluble phenol extracts of monensin-selected cells had 1.8-fold more anthrone-reactive material than did the wild type. Wild-type cultures that were washed in Tris buffer (pH 8.0) released little alkaline phosphatase and were agglutinated by lysozyme. Monensin-selected cultures leaked ninefold more alkaline phosphatase and were not agglutinated by lysozyme. Wild-type colonies taken from high-dilution agar roll tubes retained the lysozyme agglutination phenotype even if transferred with monensin, and monensin-selected colonies were never agglutinated. These observations indicated that wild-type P. bryantii cultures had a subpopulation with different outer membrane characteristics and increased monensin resistance.  相似文献

Gastric ulceration is a common disease in pig production worldwide and is associated with economic losses as well as animal health and welfare issues. The aim of this study was to explore potential salivary biomarkers for gastric ulceration in pigs. In addition, the aim was to study the effect of hemp on the incidence of gastric ulcers. Approximately 440 growing-finishing pigs in the period from 30 to 110 kg BW were allocated to four different diets: meal feed (Meal); pelleted feed (Pellets); pelleted feed added 4% hempseed cake (Hemp Cake); pelleted feed added 4% hempseed hulls (Hemp Hulls). The day before slaughter, saliva samples from each pig were collected. After slaughter, the stomachs were emptied to assess the consistency of the stomach content and examined for gastric ulceration using an index scale (0–10). Noticeable changes of the gastric mucosa (total index score ≥ 6) were observed in 291 pigs. The odds of having index scores 0–5 relative to index scores 6–8 and 9–10, respectively, were higher (P < 0.001) for pigs fed Meal compared to pigs fed Pellets. The odds of suffering from severe gastric ulcers tended (P = 0.08) to be lower in pigs fed Hemp Hulls compared to pigs fed Pellets. A non-targeted liquid chromatography mass spectrometry based metabolomics analysis was performed on saliva samples to determine any separation between pigs with healthy stomachs and those with gastric ulcers and to examine a possible correlation between gastric ulcer index and potential biomarkers. Partial least-squares discriminant analysis showed a separation between pigs with ulcers and those with healthy stomachs/hyperkeratosis (HK). Metabolites contributing to the separation between groups were identified. Levels of oxylipins deriving from linoleic acid were lower (P < 0.001) in pigs with ulcers compared to healthy/HK pigs. This may indicate a shift in the metabolic pathways towards more pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid-derived eicosanoids, which might reflect an increased inflammatory response. Thus, reduced levels of oxylipins derived from linoleic acid seemed to be associated with active gastric ulcers, and thereby they might function as biomarkers for gastric ulceration in pigs. In addition, supplementation of hempseed hulls had a beneficial effect on severe gastric ulcers, as hempseed hulls changed the consistency of the gastric content by conferring more solidness. However, it was not possible to observe any reliable separation between pigs fed pellets supplemented with hemp products and pigs fed non-supplemented pellets according to the identified salivary metabolites.  相似文献

All were effective in preventing infections and acceptable to young rabbits when prepared in pelleted feed. Weight gain, however, was not as good in inoculated, medicated rabbits as in noninoculated, nonmedicated controls.
No gross pathologic changes were detected except in the livers of inoculated, nonmedicated controls which were severely infected and greatly enlarged. Livers of medicated rabbits were uninfected and normal in appearance and size.  相似文献

Camel and cow manures were evaluated as dietary components in pelleted feed for male tilapia over a 12 week period. Seven isonitrogenous (35% crude protein) and isocaloric (4·00 kcal/g gross energy) diets were prepared. Each manure was included in the diets at 10, 20 and 30%. A control diet containing neither of the two manures was used. The best survival rate, growth performance and feed utilization efficiency values were achieved by the control diet. Diets containing 10 or 20% camel manure or 10% cow manure gave relatively good results. Higher inclusions of the two manures significantly (P < 0·05) suppressed growth. It is recommended that camel and cow manures could be included in pelleted feeds of tilapia at levels of up to 20 and 10% respectively.  相似文献

Oat grains from a single source were ground in a hammer mill, either with no screen present (coarse) or through 1.56 or 4.68-mm screens, to produce three samples with different particle size distributions. At inclusion levels of 850 g kg?1 the three samples were used as the bases of three otherwise identical diets. Half of each diet was steam pelleted to give pellets of 7-mm diameter and the other half retained as a meal form. Factorially designed metabolism experiments using 30 pigs of 20 kg initial live weight and a growth experiment using 72 individually fed pigs of 25 kg initial live weight were made.Pelleting or particle size of the diet had no significant effect on (a) apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), modified acid detergent fibre and gross energy (b) digestible (DE) and metabolisable energy (ME) contents (the DE contents of the meal and pelleted diets were 12.81 and 13.03 MJ kg?1 DM, respectively) and (c) nitrogen retention. Apparent digestibility of the ether-extractable fraction was significantly poorer in meals (cf. pellets) and in the diets based on coarse grains compared with those based on the two finer-ground samples. Also, apparent digestibility of nitrogen was significantly poorer in the diets based on the coarse grains (0.803) compared with that based on the 1.56-mm ground grain (0.832). Growth and efficiency of feed conversion were significantly improved by pelleting the coarse grain diet, and the meal diet based on the coarse grain gave significantly inferior results compared with those from the two other meal diets.  相似文献

Background

The identification of hepatitis E virus (HEV) from rabbits motivated us to assess the possibility of using rabbits as a non-human primate animal model for HEV infection and vaccine evaluation.

Methodology/Principal Findings

First, 75 rabbits were inoculated with seven strains of genotypes 1, 3, 4, and rabbit HEV, to determine the appropriate strain, administrative route and viral dosage. Second, 15 rabbits were randomly divided into three groups and vaccinated with 0 µg (placebo), 10 µg and 20 µg of HEV candidate vaccine, HEV p179, respectively. After three doses of the vaccination, the rabbits were challenged with 3.3×105 genome equivalents of genotype 4 HEV strain H4-NJ703. The strain of genotype 1 HEV was not found to be infectious for rabbits. However, approximately 80% of the animals were infected by two rabbit HEV strains. All rabbits inoculated with a genotype 3 strain were seroconverted but did not show viremia or fecal viral shedding. Although two genotype 4 strains, H4-NJ153 and H4-NJ112, only resulted in part of rabbits infected, another strain of genotype 4, H4-NJ703, had an infection rate of 100% (five out of five) when administrated intravenously. However, only two out of fifteen rabbits showed virus excretion and seroconversion when inoculated orally with H4-NJ703 of three different dosages. In the vaccine evaluation study, rabbits vaccinated with 20 µg of the HEV p179 produced anti-HEV with titers of 1∶104–1∶105 and were completely protected from infection. Rabbits vaccinated with 10 µg produced anti-HEV with titers of 1∶103–1∶104 and were protected from hepatitis, but two out of the five rabbits showed virus shedding.

Conclusions/Significance

Rabbits may be served as an alternative to the non-human primate models for HEV infection and vaccine evaluation when certain virus strains, appropriate viral dosages, and the intravenous route of inoculation are selected.  相似文献

Reproductive data for 1795 artificially inseminated Hra: (NZW)SPF control rabbits in 93 developmental toxicity studies conducted from 1980 through 1989 were summarized. Data were obtained during terminal Caesarean-sectioning procedures performed on animals which survived to day 29 of gestation and during postmortem evaluation of does which aborted, delivered prematurely, or were found dead. Significant seasonal variation was not observed. Average pregnancy rate, percentage of rabbits that aborted, and percentage of rabbits that delivered prematurely throughout the decade were 86, 2.0, and 1.6%, respectively. Average numbers of corpora lutea, implantations, live fetuses, dead fetuses, early resorptions, and late resorptions for each doe that survived to scheduled termination were 10.8, 7.8, 7.1, 0.02, 0.49, and 0.15, respectively. The various vehicles used, routes of administration, and a variety of maternal and paternal factors were compared with the fertility data, and no correlations were observed. Rabbits that aborted earlier in gestation had fewer implantations than does which aborted late or delivered prematurely. Does which resorbed 100% of their conceptuses had fewer corpora lutea and implantations when compared with rabbits in the remainder of the population. Rabbits pregnant at scheduled termination which had a low number of corpora lutea or implantation sites had higher than expected pre- and postimplantation losses relative to the population as a whole. Does with a high number of corpora lutea had significantly higher preimplantation loss relative to the general population. This may indicate the presence of a "ceiling value" for the number of ova that can become fertilized and/or implant when the ovulation rate is high and which probably varies according to strain as well as a number of factors related to the individual rabbit. Based upon the results of this study and the work of a previous author, a minimum of four corpora lutea may be necessary for the successful maintenance of pregnancy in the New Zealand white rabbit. The minimum number of corpora lutea required may be strain dependent and may bear a relationship to the normal litter size of the strain.  相似文献
