Nucleotide variation in an approximately 490 bp fragment of the mitochondrial DNA control region (mtDNA CR) was used to describe the genetic variation and phylogeographical pattern in the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) over its entire range. The sampling effort was focused on the relict populations that survived a drastic population bottleneck, caused by overhunting, at the end of the 19th century. A total of 152 individuals grouped into eight populations representing all currently recognized subspecies were studied. Sixteen haplotypes were detected, none of them shared among populations. Intrapopulation sequence variation was very low, most likely a result of the severe bottleneck. Extreme genetic structure could result from human-mediated extinction of intermediate populations, but it could also be an effect of prior substantial structuring of the beaver populations with watersheds of major Eurasian rivers acting as barriers to gene flow. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the presence of two mtDNA lineages: eastern (Poland, Lithuania, Russia and Mongolia) and western (Germany, Norway and France), the former comprising more divergent haplotypes. The low level of sequence divergence of the entire cytochrome b gene among six individuals representing six subspecies suggests differentiation during the last glacial period and existence of multiple glacial refugia. At least two evolutionary significant units (ESU) can be identified, the western and the eastern haplogroup. The individual relict populations should be regarded as management units, the eastern subspecies possibly also as ESUs. Guidelines for future translocations and reintroductions are proposed.  相似文献

Ontogenetic allometry of the cranium was studied in 580 individuals of the Eurasian beavers Castor fiber in two subspecies out of six autochthonous and reintroduced populations using the methods of multivariate nonparametric statistics. It was noted that the growth dynamics demonstrates a correspondence to trajectories of ontogenetic rodent models with the difference that intensive beaver growth finishes by the age of four years. Significant differences in the dynamics of age variability were detected in the beavers of two subspecies; with somewhat smaller initial postnatal sizes, C. fiber belorussicus grows faster than C. fiber orientoeuropaeus.  相似文献

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes, coding molecules which play an important role in immune response, are the most polymorphic genes known in vertebrates. However, MHC polymorphism in some species is limited. MHC monomorphism at several MHC class I and II loci was previously reported for two neighbouring northern European populations of the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) and reduced selection for polymorphism has been hypothesized. Here, we analysed a partial sequence of the second exon of the MHC II DRB locus from seven relict European and Asian beaver populations. We detected 10 unique alleles among 76 beavers analysed. Only a western Siberian population was polymorphic, with four alleles detected in 10 individuals. Each of the remaining populations was fixed for a different allele. Sequences showed considerable divergence, suggesting the long persistence of allelic lineages. A significant excess of nonsynonymous substitutions was detected at the antigen binding sites, indicating that sequence evolution of beaver DRB was driven by positive selection. Current MHC monomorphism in the majority of populations may be the result of the superimposition of the recent bottleneck on pre-existing genetic structure resulting from population subdivision and differential pathogen pressure.  相似文献

We developed nine new nuclear dinucleotide microsatellite loci for Castor canadensis. All loci were polymorphic, except for one. The number of alleles ranged from two to four and from five to 12 in populations from Arizona and Wisconsin, respectively. Average heterozygosity ranged from 0.13 to 0.86 per locus. Since cross-species amplification in Castor fiber was successful only in four loci, we tested also nine recently published C. canadensis loci in the Eurasian species. Eight of the published loci amplified; however, three were monomorphic. The number of alleles was lower in C. fiber than in C. canadensis at all loci tested.  相似文献

Potential factors were analyzed that affected the formation of gene pools of two introduced beaver populations founded in the 1940s-1950s by releasing beavers from Voronezh oblast and Belarus into rivers of the Kirov and Novosibirsk oblasts. The populations from these two regions were shown to differ in four allozyme loci (Ahd-2, Gpi, Es-5, and Dia-2). Within Kirov oblast, the samples from three tributaries of the Vyatka River differed in three other loci (Ck-1, Gp-9, and Trf). It is suggested that these features of the allele distribution at these loci are explained by the history of the introduced populations, hybridization between beavers from Voronezh oblast and Belarus, and founder effect during the subsequent artificial and spontaneous migration. Generally, genetic differences between the populations in all studied loci were very small: D = 0.02 between populations from different regions and D = 0.01 between populations from the tributaries of third-order rivers of the Kirov oblast. At the same time, disequilibrium was detected for ten polymorphic loci in the combined sample from the populations of Kirov oblast, which indicates the existence of interpopulation heterogeneity at the level of local populations of fourth- and fifth-order rivers. Beavers Castor spp. are generalist herbivores, feeding on the bark, shoots and leaves of woody plants, terrestrial herbs and forbs, ferns and aquatic vegetation. As central-place foragers, beavers move out from water to select and cut trees and vegetation, and then transport it back to their refuge. These terrestrial forays are energetically costly; therefore, beavers should concentrate their foraging activity near the central place and increase the degree of selectivity for specific sizes or species of food with increasing distance from the water. The aim of this study was to test the predictions of the central place and the optimal foraging theories for the food selection of the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber , and show the foraging preferences of the focal species in the boreal conifer forest zone of Europe. Foraging intensity by beavers and the abundance of woody species were surveyed in transects positioned randomly at seven beaver territories. In compliance with the central-place foraging theory, the foraging intensity declined with increasing distance from the river. Beavers fed preferentially on willows ( Salix ), rowan ( Sorbus ) and birches ( Betula ), although alders ( Alnus ) dominated their diet. Size selectivity showed similar patterns to previous North American studies, which were also carried out in habitats with predominantly small saplings. The probability of selection of small saplings dropped as distance increased, which is consistent with the predictions of optimal foraging models that larger prey items are more likely to be favoured with increasing provisioning distance.  相似文献

Historical and ecological processes have deeply affected biogeographic patterns of animals. Studying morphological variability of species, using classical and spatial analyses, can elucidate these patterns and give insights on both processes. Morphological variability of the endemic Iberian viper Vipera seoanei is examined to identify morphological coherent groups, biogeographic patterns and the putative role of abiotic pressures in the geographic variation of morphological variation. Results from classic and spatial multivariate analyses over 27 morphometric traits for 468 specimens from the global range of the species were integrated. Classic analyses reported large morphological variability and confirmed the differentiation of two coherent groups, which are representatives of current subspecies. Spatial analyses reported a geographic gradient pattern from western Cantabrian Mountains to the rest of the study area. Areas of high morphological variability were found, and two spatial coherent groups with an integration zone were recognized. Significant spatial correlations and trends suggest that some traits could be under selection and may display adaptations to local environments. Although observed patterns can be attributed to Pleistocene climatic cycles, an adaptive diversification of the species is supported. The combination of classical and spatial multivariate analyses is a useful methodology to identify morphological patterns and infer underlying factors.  相似文献

Species reintroductions are high-investment ecological interventions that require feasibility studies and careful planning. In this context, Ecological Niche Models are a useful tool to identify habitat suitability, estimate spatiotemporal dynamics and manage reintroductions or conservation initiatives. The present paper proposes an application of Ecological Niche Models to explore potentials of the Italian territory for the reintroduction of the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber), by identifying suitable areas and estimating the possible population harboured. The MaxEnt model was chosen from several modelling methods working with different statistical algorithms and inputs. MaxEnt was applied to the whole territory of the region of Piedmont and to two focus areas, the Natural Park of “La Mandria” and the Ivrea lakes area. The habitat suitability results were compared with previous research, conducted in 2019 that applied an integrated SWOT-Spatial multicriteria based approach for the construction of a Map of Suitable Areas for beavers reintroduction in Piedmont. The MaxEnt predictive maps show several potential habitats mostly located along main watercourses in foothill and in plain zones. Moreover, habitat distribution is comparable with the SWOT-Spatial Multicriteria Analsysis, although predictive maps could be minimally dependent on the choice of sample points within the map just mentioned. The MaxEnt model and, generally, the Ecological Niche models represent a useful tool to evaluate and select appropriate reintroduction sites and can support the complex problem of localization in reintroduction planning.  相似文献

The alpaca fiber diameter (FD) varies from 18 to 36 μm, being the finer fiber categories highly appreciated. However, the alpaca fiber presents some limitations in the textile industry due to the high incidence of fiber medullation and diameter variability, both reduces the comfort feeling of the garments. Decreasing or even removing medullation could be a possible selection objective in alpaca breeding programs for increasing economic value of the alpaca fiber. Therefore, the present work aimed to estimate genetic parameters regarding medullation traits, as well as the genetic correlations with other economical important traits, to be able to select the appropriate criteria to reduce or remove medullation on alpaca fiber and help to reduce the prickle factor in the garments. The data was collected from 2000 to 2017 and belonged to the Pacomarca experimental farm. There were 3698 medullation records corresponding to 1869 Huacaya and 414 Suri genetic types. The fiber samples were taken from the mid side, and were analyzed in an OFDA 100® device. The traits analyzed were percentage of medullation (PM), medullated fiber diameter (MFD), FD, standard deviation of FD, greasy fleece weight as fiber traits; density, crimp in Huacaya and lock structure in Suri, head conformation, leg coverage as morphological traits; weaning weight and age at first calving as secondary and functional traits. Genetic parameters were estimated via a multitrait restricted maximum likelihood. The heritabilities for PM and MFD were 0.225 and 0.237 in Huacaya genetic type and 0.664 and 0.237 in Suri genetic type, respectively; heritabilities for other traits were moderate for productive and morphological traits, and low to moderate for secondary and functional traits. The genetic correlations PM–FD and MFD–FD were high and favorable in both genetic types, between 0.531 and 0.975; the genetic correlation PM–MFD was 0.121 in Huacaya and 0.427 in Suri. The rest of genetic correlations with other traits were in general moderate and favorable. The repeatabilities were 0.556 and 0.668 for PM, and 0.322 and 0.293 for MFD in Huacaya and Suri genetic types, respectively. As a conclusion, PM was identified to be a good selection criterion, probably combined in an index with FD to reduce prickling factor.  相似文献

  • 1 The genus Castor comprises two species: the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber, and the North American beaver Castor canadensis. Both species suffered from overexploitation, but have seen a revival since the 1920s due to increased protection and reintroduction programmes. Increases in the populations and distributions of species that are able to modify ecosystems have generated much scientific interest. Here we review the available literature concerning the possible ecological impact of beaver species in the Old and New World.
  • 2 Beavers, being ecosystem engineers, are among the few species besides humans that can significantly change the geomorphology, and consequently the hydrological characteristics and biotic properties of the landscape. In so doing, beavers increase heterogeneity, and habitat and species diversity at the landscape scale. Beaver foraging also has a considerable impact on the course of ecological succession, species composition and structure of plant communities, making them a good example of ecologically dominant species (e.g. keystone species).
  • 3 Nevertheless, the strength of beavers’ impact varies from site to site, depending on the geographical location, relief and the impounded habitat type. Consequently, they may not be significant controlling agents of the ecosystem in all parts of their distribution, but have strong interactions only under certain circumstances. We suggest that beavers can create important management opportunities in the Holarctic, and this review will help land managers determine the likely outcome of beaver activity.

The effect of beaver (Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758) activity on amphibian reproduction was studied in the small river valleys in Novgorod oblast. At sites not subjected to beaver activity, the reproduction rate of amphibians was low. In spring the water in beaver ponds warms up quickly, which attracts amphibians for reproduction. The maximal abundance of tadpoles due to a high reproduction rate was observed in partially drained ponds. However, a high larvae mortality rate was often observed there. Tadpole survival in flooded and empty ponds depends on factors that are not controlled by beavers, such as geomorphology and climate.  相似文献

Genetic differences within and among naturally occurring populations of wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were characterized across five subspecies' historical ranges using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis, microsatellite loci and mitochondrial control region sequencing. Current subspecific designations based on morphological traits were generally supported by these analyses, with the exception of the eastern (M. g. silvestris) and Florida (M. g. osceola) subspecies, which consistently formed a single unit. The Gould's subspecies was both the most genetically divergent and the least genetically diverse of the subspecies. These genetic patterns were consistent with current and historical patterns of habitat continuity. Merriam's populations showed a positive association between genetic and geographical distance, Rio Grande populations showed a weaker association and the eastern populations showed none, suggesting differing demographic forces at work in these subspecies. We recommend managing turkeys to maintain subspecies integrity, while recognizing the importance of maintaining regional population structure that may reflect important adaptive variation.  相似文献

Speciation processes are largely determined by the relative strength of divergent selection versus the magnitude of gene flow. The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) has a broad geographic distribution that encompasses substantial geographic variation in morphology and behavior. The European (H. r. rustica) and East-Mediterranean (H. r. transitiva) subspecies are closely related, despite differing in morphological and life-history traits. To explore patterns of genetic differentiation and gene flow, we compared morphological and genetic variation among the nonmigratory breeding population of H. r. transitiva from Israel and the migratory population of H. r. rustica that passes through Israel and compared it with the genetic differentiation between H. r. transitiva from Israel and a breeding population of H. r. rustica from the United Kingdom that uses a different migratory flyway. Mitochondrial haplotype network analysis suggests that the European and East-Mediterranean populations are intermixed, although there was low but significant genetic differentiation between the subspecies based on both mitochondrial (F(ST) = 0.025-0.033) and microsatellite (F(ST) = 0.009-0.014) loci. Coalescent-based analyses suggest recent divergence and substantial gene flow between these populations despite their differences in morphological and behavioral traits. The results suggest that these subspecies are undergoing a differentiation process in the face of gene flow, with selection possibly operating on sexually selected traits.  相似文献

Phenotypic divergence among natural populations can be explained by natural selection or by neutral processes such as drift. Many examples in the literature compare putatively neutral (FST) and quantitative genetic (QST) differentiation in multiple populations to assess their evolutionary signature and identify candidate traits involved with local adaptation. Investigating these signatures in closely related or recently diversified species has the potential to shed light on the divergence processes acting at the interspecific level. Here, we conducted this comparison in two subspecies of snapdragon plants (eight populations of Antirrhinum majus pseudomajus and five populations of A. m. striatum) in a common garden experiment. We also tested whether altitude was involved with population phenotypic divergence. Our results identified candidate phenological and morphological traits involved with local adaptation. Most of these traits were identified in one subspecies but not the other. Phenotypic divergence increased with altitude for a few biomass‐related traits, but only in A. m. striatum. These traits therefore potentially reflect A. m. striatum adaptation to altitude. Our findings imply that adaptive processes potentially differ at the scale of A. majus subspecies.  相似文献

In 1995 Scottish Natural Heritage proposed a feasibility study to examine the case for reintroducing the Eurasian Beaver Castor fiber to Scotland. Following IUCN guidelines, an important first step is to demonstrate that the Beaver was once a native of Scotland and that the causes of its extinction no longer pose any threat to reintroduced animals. Therefore, palaeontological, archaeological and historical evidence for the former existence of the Beaver in Scotland and the causes of its extinction are reviewed.
Palaeontological and archaeological evidence suggest that the Eurasian Beaver was once widely distributed throughout mainland Scotland. Historical evidence suggests that although it was once probably fairly common, it became extinct between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, most probably towards the latter. The main cause of its decline and extinction was probably hunting for its pelt, meat and castoreum, but habitat destruction may have been important in the loss of some small isolated populations.
Given that the causes of extinction of the Beaver in Scotland now no longer exist or can be effectively controlled, there is no reason why a feasibility study cannot proceed to assess the practicalities of a reintroduction.  相似文献

Oleria onega agarista Felder and Felder and Oleria onega ssp. nov. are two Ithomiinae subspecies from north-eastern Peru, that differ for some morphological and behavioural traits. Two contact zones are known near the town of Tarapoto: Ahuashiyacu, where both subspecies cohabit but do not seem to hybridise, and Estero (near the village of Shapaja), where they apparently hybridise. Genetic differences between the two subspecies and between populations were investigated with random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Both Cluster and Principal Coordinates Analyses (CCoA and PCoA) performed using these data, provided a clear but weak discrimination between the two subspecies. Genetic diversity is much higher within the populations than between them. Moreover, the geographically more distant populations are grouped together by the genetic data. Morphological traits on the wing patterns of the hybrids are intermediary between the two butterflies subspecies, while RAPDs data place them closer to O. onega agarista than to O. onega ssp. The individuals of the Ahuashiyacu population are clearly separated into two groups, those of O. onega ssp. and O. onega agarista, by both morphology and RAPDs data. Moreover, none of those individuals show RAPD similarity with the hybrids, suggesting that hybridisation has not occurred in this population.  相似文献

Recently a heat shock protein (Hsp90) has been implicated as controlling the expression of cryptic genetic variation through buffering developmental processes. The release of variability in canalized characters following Hsp90 inhibition has been established in model species including Drosophila melanogaster and Arabidopsis thaliana , but has not yet been examined in species with limited distributions. To test if Hsp90 has a role in releasing phenotypic variation in rainforest Drosophila species, developing larvae from a large (> 1000 individuals) outbred population of Drosophila birchii were treated with the Hsp90 inhibitors geldanamycin and radicicol, and morphological traits, desiccation resistance, and life-history traits were measured. The means of all traits were influenced by inhibition. Although only the phenotypic variances of two canalized bristle traits were affected consistently, variability for two of the continuously varying traits (fecundity and development time) were also affected, albeit inconsistently. There was also no effect of Hsp90 inhibition on the developmental stability of the morphological traits as measured by fluctuating asymmetry. Hsp90 inhibition did not increase phenotypic variability in desiccation resistance, a trait previously shown to represent an evolutionary limit in this species. These results question the extent to which Hsp90 buffers variation for both quantitative and discrete traits, and highlight the need for further empirical studies to determine the involvement of Hsp90 in canalization and developmental stability.
