The effect of very low calorie diet (VLCD) on fat-free mass (FFM) and physiological response to exercise is a topic of current interest. Ten moderately obese women (aged 23-57 years) received VLCD (1695 kJ.day-1) for 6 weeks. FFM, estimated by four conventional techniques, and heart rate (fc), blood lactate (la(b)), mean arterial pressure (MAP), respiratory exchange ratio (R) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured during a submaximal cycle ergometry test 1 week before, in the 2nd and 6th week, and 1 week after VLCD treatment. Strength and muscular endurance of the quadriceps and hamstrings were tested by isokinetic dynamometry. The 11.5-kg reduction in body mass was approximately 63% fat and 37% FFM. The latter was attributed largely to the loss of water associated with glycogen. Whilst exercise fc increased by 9-14 beats.min-1 (P < 0.01), there were substantial decreases (P < 0.01) in submaximal MAP (1.07-1.73 kPa), la(b) (0.75-1.00 mmol.l-1 and R (0.07-0.09) during VLCD. R and fc returned to normal levels after VLCD. Gross strength decreased (P < 0.01) by 9 and 13% at 1.05 rad.s-1 and 3.14 rad.s-1, respectively. Strength expressed relative to body mass (Nm.kg-1) increased (P < 0.01) at the lower contraction velocity, but there was no change at the faster velocity. Muscular endurance also decreased (P < 0.01) by 62 and 82% for the hamstrings and quadriceps, respectively. We concluded that the strength decrease was a natural adaptation to the reduction in body mass as the ratio of strength to FFM was maintained.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Objective: Neurotransmitter systems participate in the regulation of food intake, and their activities are expected to influence eating behavior. Design and Methods: We investigated possible associations between body mass index (BMI) and central noradrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine activities, as reflected by the cerebrospinal fluid levels of their main metabolites methoxyhydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), 5‐hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5‐HIAA), and homovanillic acid (HVA), respectively. We studied 192 subjects (111 males, 81 females) admitted to neurologic clinic for diagnostic investigations that included CSF analysis, and were found not to suffer from any major neurological disease. Subjects were categorized in three groups, namely in lower, in the two middle, and in upper BMI quartiles, the limits calculated separately for males and females. Results: No differences were found in MHPG levels between groups, while subjects in the upper BMI quartile showed significantly elevated levels of 5‐HIAA and HVA compared to the levels of subjects in lower and middle quartiles. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that in overweight subjects there are enhanced demands in serotoninergic and dopaminergic signaling for their reward system that may lead to increased motivation for food consumption. The implication of reward centers in eating behavior supports the hypothesis of common mechanisms in obesity and drug addiction.  相似文献

Objectives

Evaluate the effect of diet, physical exercise, and a daily oral intake of a soy isoflavones extract (Fisiogen®) contained 200 mg of Glycine max, which corresponded to 80 mg of isoflavone (60.8 mg of genistein, 16 mg of daidzein and 3.2 mg of glicitein) on leptin and other adipokines plasma levels in healthy obese postmenopausal women.

Methods

A multicentric randomized longitudinal prospective cohort study was conducted in a sample of 87 healthy obese postmenopausal women. Patients were randomly assigned to a 1200 kcal diet and exercise group (control group) or a group of 1200 kcal diet, exercise, and daily oral intake of daily oral intake of a soy isoflavones extract (Fisiogen®) contained 200 mg of Glycine max, which corresponded to 80 mg of isoflavone (60.8 mg of genistein, 16 mg of daidzein and 3.2 mg of glicitein) (soy isoflavones group) along 6 months. Main outcome measures were: anthropometric measures, body composition, leptin, adiponectin, TNF-alpha, homocysteine, C-reactive protein, glucose, insulin, lipid profile and oestradiol serum levels, Kupperman index and Cervantes Scale.

Results

Mean serum leptin and TNF-alpha levels declined after 6 months in both groups of the study, but only women in the soy isoflavones group showed a significant increase of mean serum levels of adiponectin.

Conclusions

Diet, physical exercise and daily oral intake of a soy isoflavones extract (Fisiogen®) contained 200 mg of Glycine max, which corresponded to 80 mg of isoflavone (60.8 mg of genistein, 16 mg of daidzein and 3.2 mg of glicitein) have a beneficial effect on serum leptin, adiponectin and TNF-α in healthy obese postmenopausal women after 6 months of treatment.  相似文献

The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of a very low-carbohydrate diet on weight loss and biochemical parameters in overweight women. Twenty women completed an 8-week trial that reduced their daily carbohydrate intake from 232 to 71 g (p < 0.05) and reduced energy by 2,644 kJ/day (8,384 to 5,740 kJ, p < 0.001). The average weight loss was 5.0 kg (p < 0.0001), with a net decrease in body mass index of 1.82 kg/m2, a loss of 3.4% body fat (4 kg, p < 0.0001), and a loss of 1.0 kg lean mass (p < 0.05). There were no significant changes in fasting blood glucose, fasting serum insulin, oral glucose tolerance, free or total insulin-like growth factor-1, or total IGFBP-3. Systolicblood pressure decreased by an average of 9.0 mmHg (1 mmHg = 133.322 Pa) (p < 0.01) and diastolic blood pressure decreased by 7 mmHg (p < 0.05). Total cholesterol decreased 1.2 mM (p < 0.001), all of which was accounted for by a decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.001) with no change in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (baseline, 1.17 mM; week 8, 1.22 mM). Total triacylglycerol decreased 0.6 mM (p < 0.01), and the ratio of triacylglycerol/HDL also significantly decreased (baseline, 1.40; week 8, 0.87; p < 0.001). Serum beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations rose significantly by week 2 and declined thereafter but remained significantly higher than baseline values for the duration of the intervention. Therefore, carbohydrate restriction to 70 g or less with concomitant energy restriction, without changes in protein or fat consumption, promotes weight loss, and improvements in body composition, blood pressure, and blood lipids without compromising glucose tolerance in moderately overweight women.  相似文献

The present cross-sectional study was aimed to investigate anthropometric and body composition characteristics in pre- and postmenopausal Asian Indian women. A total of 245 healthy women aged 25 to 65 years took part in the study. A random sampling procedure using a local voters' registration list was followed to select the participants. All participants belonged to the Bengalee population and were inhabitants of the Bolpur-Santiniketan area (lying in between 23 degrees 40' north latitude and 87degrees 43' east longitude) West Bengal, India. Before the actual commencement of the study, written information was communicated to select individuals, and an appointment was requested at their respective houses. Anthropometric measures, namely height, weight etc., were collected using standard techniques. Percentages of body fat (%BF) and body mass index (BMI) were measured using an Omron body fat analyser. All subjects were categorized into two groups: premenopausal (Group I; n = 145, mean age = 32.66 +/- 5.75 years) and postmenopausal (Group II; n = 100, mean age = 52.72 +/- 5.62 years). It was observed that 80.00% women were cohabited and 80.82% were housewife with 44.08% of them having an education up to secondary level. Furthermore, 62.45% subjects had monthly family expenditure of > or = 5000 Indian Rupees. One way ANOVA revealed that there was significant group difference for age, age at menarche, MWC, WHR, FM, FFM and %BF across the groups. Intercorrelation matrix (Pearson's correlation) showed that age had significantly positive association with MWC (p < 0.01), MHC (p < 0.05), WHR (p < 0.01), FM (p < 0.01), and %BF (p < 0.01), whereas FFM has had negative association with age. Most interestingly, it was observed that there was significant difference [chi2 (1) = 9.73] for central obesity status across the groups. It seems reasonable to argue that onset of menopause does play a vital role to alter body composition and in turn CVD risk factors.  相似文献

Phytic acid, a major phosphorous storage compound found in foodstuffs, is known to form insoluble complexes with nutritionally essential minerals, including zinc (Zn). Phytases are enzymes that catalyze the removal of these minerals from phytic acid, improving their bioavailability. The objective of the present study was to determine the ability of dietary phytase to affect body weight, body composition, and bone strength in growing rats fed a high phytic acid, low Zn diet. Rats (n = 20) were fed either a control (AIN-93) or phytase supplemented (Natuphos, BASF, 1,500 phytase units (FTU)/kg) diet for a period of 8 weeks. Phytase supplementation resulted in increased (P<.05) bone and plasma Zn, but no change in plasma inorganic phosphorous or bone levels of Ca, Fe, or Mg. The addition of phytase to the diets resulted in a 22.4% increase (P<.05) in body weight at the end of the study as compared with rats fed a control diet. Dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) revealed that phytase supplementation resulted in increase lean body mass (LBM, P<.001) and increased bone mineral content (BMC, P<.001) as compared with feeding the control diet. Bone studies indicated that femurs and tibias from phytase supplemented rats had greater mass (P<.05) and were stronger (P<.05) than rats fed the control diet. This data suggest that the addition of phytase to low Zn diets results in improved Zn status, which may be responsible for beneficial effects on growth, body composition, and bone strength.  相似文献

This study was performed to evaluate the combined effect of a meal replacement and an alleged weight loss supplement (WLS) on body composition, fitness parameters, and clinical health in moderately overweight college-aged men and women. Body mass, bench press 1 repetition maximum (1RM), leg press 1RM, body composition, V(O2)max, fasting glucose (GLU), and lipid panels were evaluated before (T1) and after (T2) 8 weeks of combined resistance training (RT) and cardiovascular training (CVT). After T1, subjects were randomly assigned in a double-blind fashion to either the WLS (6 men, 7 women; 21 ± 5 years, 168 ± 8 cm, 75.4 ± 12.7 kg, 31.6 ± 7.7%BFAT) or placebo (PLA: 6 men, 6 women; 22 ± 4 years, 174 ± 9 cm, 84.1 ± 8.8 kg, 30.2 ± 5.6%BFAT) group. Both groups performed 3 d · wk(-1) of combined progressive RT (2 × 12 reps of 8 exercises at 75-80% 1RM) and CVT (30 minutes on a cycle ergometer at 70-85% heart rate reserve). Subjects consumed 4 capsules per day and a once-daily meal replacement throughout the protocol. Percent body fat, bench press 1RM, and leg press 1RM significantly improved (p < 0.05) in both groups. Blood GLU (G × T; p = 0.048) improved in WLS and systolic blood pressure (SBP) approached significance (G × T; p = 0.06) in the WLS group. Follow-up analysis of SBP revealed a significant within-group decrease in the WLS group, whereas no within-group changes were found for either group for GLU. Practically speaking, daily supplementation with a meal replacement and a thrice weekly exercise program can increase fitness levels and improve body composition, whereas adding a thermogenic substance provides no additional benefit over fitness or body composition changes but may favorably alter serum markers of clinical health.  相似文献

This studyexamines the effects of weight loss by caloric restriction (WL) andaerobic exercise plus weight loss (AEx+WL) on total and regional bonemineral density (BMD) in older women. Healthy, postmenopausal women [age 63 ± 1 (SE) yr] not onhormone-replacement therapy underwent 6 mo of WL(n = 15) consisting of dietarycounseling one time per week with a caloric deficit (250-350kcal/day) or AEx+WL (n = 15)consisting of treadmill exercise three times per week in addition tothe weight loss. Maximal aerobic capacity increased only in the AEx+WLgroup (P < 0.001). Body weight, percent fat, and fat mass decreased similarly in both groups(P < 0.005), with no changesin fat-free mass. Total body BMD (by dual-energy X-rayabsorptiometry) decreased in both groups(P < 0.05). Femoral neck, Ward'striangle, and greater trochanter BMD decreased in the WL group(P  0.05) but were not significantlydifferent after AEx+WL.L2-L4BMD did not significantly change in either group. Thus WL andAEx+WL both result in losses of totalbody BMD; however, AEx+WL appears to prevent the loss in regional BMDseen with WL alone in healthy, older women. This suggests that theaddition of exercise to weight-loss programs may reduce the risk forbone loss.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of 8-weeks modern pilates mat and ball exercise program on body mass, waist circumference and waist to hip ratio on sedentary obese women total of 58 health sedentary obese women volunteered to participate in this study. They were divided randomly into 1 of 2 groups: pilates training group (PTG; N = 34) and control group (CG; N = 27). A pilates training program was applied to the subjects one hour per day four days per week during 8 weeks. The subjects in the control group did not participate in the training and participated only in the pre and post test measurements. BMI, waist circumference, Waist-hip ratio, 4-site skinfold thickness (Biceps, Triceps, Supscapula and Iliac), fat percentage, resting metabolic rate, Lean body mass and flexibility were assessed before and after the pilates training program. The SPSS statistical program (version 16.0) was used for data analysis. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) were run on each of the dependent variables. For all analyses, the criterion for significance was set at an alpha level of p < 0.05. 8 weeks of pilates training program has been found to be effective on weight, Body mass index, Lean body mass, waist-hip ratio, biceps, triceps, fat percentage, basal metabolic rate, and flexibility in PTG (p < 0.05). The control group showed no significant differences in the same measures post-intervention. As a result there was a positive effect of Modern Pilates mat and ball exercises of reducing obesity, body composition parameters and flexibility at sedentary obese women.  相似文献

The role exerted by the endogenous opioid system on thermoregulation has been studied in six postmenopausal women affected by Parkinson's disease and in 6 age-matched, normal postmenopausal women, as controls. The women randomly received an infusion of the opioid antagonist naloxone (1.6 mg/h for 4 h) or of saline on two consecutive days. Body temperature, as evaluated by rectal temperature, was significantly lower (p less than 0.05) in Parkinsonian than in normal women, and it did not vary during saline infusion, in either groups. Naloxone infusion significantly reduced (p less than 0.01) body temperature in normal postmenopausal women, but it was unable to modify body temperature in women affected by Parkinson's disease. The low basal body temperature values and the inability of naloxone to exert a hypothermic effect in women suffering from Parkinson's disease seem to constitute further evidence for an impaired regulation of body temperature and impaired activity of the endogenous opioid system in this pathology.  相似文献

Exercise is recommended by public health agencies for weight management; however, the role of exercise is generally considered secondary to energy restriction. Few studies exist that have verified completion of exercise, measured the energy expenditure of exercise, and prescribed exercise with equivalent energy expenditure across individuals and genders.

Objective:

The objective of this study was to evaluate aerobic exercise, without energy restriction, on weight loss in sedentary overweight and obese men and women.

Design and Methods:

This investigation was a randomized, controlled, efficacy trial in 141 overweight and obese participants (body mass index, 31.0 ± 4.6 kg/m2; age 22.6 ± 3.9 years). Participants were randomized (2:2:1 ratio) to exercise at either 400 kcal/session or 600 kcal/session or to a nonexercise control. Exercise was supervised, 5 days/week, for 10 months. All participants were instructed to maintain usual ad libitum diets. Because of the efficacy design, completion of ≥90% of exercise sessions was an a priori definition of per protocol, and these participants were included in the analysis.

Results:

Weight loss from baseline to 10 months for the 400 and 600 kcal/session groups was 3.9 ± 4.9 kg (4.3%) and 5.2 ± 5.6 kg (5.7%), respectively, compared with weight gain for controls of 0.5 ± 3.5 kg (0.5%) (P < 0.05). Differences for weight loss from baseline to 10 months between the exercise groups and differences between men and women within groups were not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

Supervised exercise, with equivalent energy expenditure, results in clinically significant weight loss with no significant difference between men and women.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the impact of age at menarche on body composition development during adulthood. With 459 healthy middle-class women between 18 and 67 years (x = 41.5) the association between age at menarche and body composition was tested. Body composition, described by absolute and relative amount of fat mass, lean body mass, and bone mass, was estimated by means of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. In order to exclude the influence of the menopausal transition on body composition, pre- and postmenopausal females were examined separately. The absolute amount of body fat was significantly lower within the group of women whose menarche occurred later. However, postmenopausal females exhibit less significant relations between the two trait systems than premenopausal women. This may be due to the impact of menopausal transition which affected the hormone levels and body composition development independently from the adolescent hormonal transition. While in both proband groups the quantitative amount of body fat was significantly related to menarcheal age, a significant relation between menarcheal age and adult body fat distribution could not be verified. The inability to maintain body weight within prescribed ranges occurs in a significant portion of the human spinal cord injury (SCI) population. Using a rodent model of long-term high thoracic (spinal level T3) spinal cord transection (TX), we aimed to identify derangements in body weight, body composition, plasma insulin, glucose tolerance, and metabolic function, as measured by uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression in interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT). Sixteen weeks after SCI, body weights of injured female rats stabilized and were significantly lower than surgical control animals. At the same time point, SCI rats had a significantly lower whole body fat:lean tissue mass ratio than controls, as measured indirectly by NMR. Despite lower body weight and fat mass, the cumulative consumption of standard laboratory chow (4.0 kcal/g) and mean energy intake (kcal.day(-1).100 g body wt(-1)) of chronic SCI rats was significantly more than controls. Glucose tolerance tests indicated a significant enhancement in glucose handling in 16-wk SCI rats, which were coupled with lower serum insulin levels. The post mortem weight of gonadal and retroperitoneal fat pads was significantly reduced after SCI and IBAT displayed significantly lower real-time PCR expression of UCP1 mRNA. The reduced fat mass and IBAT UCP1 mRNA expression are contraindicative of the cumulative caloric intake by the SCI rats. The prolonged postinjury loss of body weight, including fat mass, is not due to hypophagia but possibly to permanent changes in gastrointestinal transit and absorption, as well as whole body homeostatic mechanisms.  相似文献

The independent and combined effects of exercise training and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on body composition, fat distribution, glucose tolerance, and insulin action were studied in postmenopausal women, aged 68 +/- 5 yr, assigned to control (n = 19), exercise (n = 18), HRT (n = 15), and exercise + HRT (n = 16) groups. The exercise consisted of 2 mo of flexibility exercises followed by 9 mo of endurance exercise. HRT was conjugated estrogens 0.625 mg/day and trimonthly medroxyprogesterone acetate 5 mg/day for 13 days. Total and regional body composition were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum glucose and insulin responses were measured during a 2-h oral glucose tolerance test. There were significant main effects of exercise on reductions in total and regional (trunk, arms, legs) fat mass, increase in leg fat-free mass, and improvements in glucose tolerance and insulin action. There were significant main effects of HRT on the reduction of total fat mass (HRT, -3.0 +/- 4.0 kg; no HRT, -1.3 +/- 2.6 kg), with a strong trend for reductions in trunk and leg fat mass (both P = 0.07). There was also a significant improvement in insulin action in response to HRT. These results suggest that there are independent and additive effects of exercise training and HRT on the reduction in fat mass and improvement in insulin action in postmenopausal women; the effect of HRT on insulin action may be mediated, in part, through changes in central adiposity.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of three levels of dietary intake [ad libitum fed (AL), moderately severe (MSR), and severe restriction (SR)] and two levels of exercise [cage confinement (CC) and exercise training (E)] on 23-h resting metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition in 47 female Sprague-Dawley rats. At the end of the 9-wk study, the MSR and SR groups weighed approximately 81 and 61%, respectively, of the AL-CC group. RMR was depressed for the MSR and SR groups compared with the AL-CC group. This was true whether expressed on an absolute (ml/min) or relative (ml.min-1.kg-0.75) basis. On a relative basis, which accounts for changes caused by weight loss alone, the RMR decreased by approximately 12 and 19%, respectively, for the MSR and SR groups compared with the AL-CC group. Although E resulted in significant differences in fat mass, percent fat, percent water, and heart mass between the AL groups, there were no significant differences between E and CC groups at either the MSR or SR level of dietary intake for any of the variables measured (i.e., body composition, muscle mass, RMR). Thus E does not appear to affect the composition of lost weight or RMR during diet-induced weight loss for female rats of normal weight.  相似文献
