Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by autoimmune degradation of insulin-producing beta-cells. It was shown in a number of epidemiological studies of seasonality of birth in children with type 1 diabetes that the autoimmune process began during fetal and postnatal development. No such studies were carried out in the former Soviet Union countries. The aim of the present study is to compare the seasonal birth month pattern in patients with type 1 diabetes (10780 men and 9337 women) born in 1960-2002 to that in the total population of Ukraine (14 785601 men and 13 911370 women) born during the same period. Significant differences were found between these two populations: chi-squared = 103.97, p < 0.0001 and 135.17, p < 0.0001 in men and women, respectively. The results of cosinor analysis showed similar sinusoidal birth patterns of patients with type 1 diabetes in all sub-groups, irrespective of the age of clinical disease expression: 0-9, 10-19, or 20-29 years. In all cases, the highest and lowest predispositions to type 1 diabetes were inherent in the people born in spring and autumn, respectively. We propose that seasonal differences in the birth pattern in the two above populations could be due to long-term programming of glucose-insulin metabolism determined by the effect of certain seasonal factors during early ontogenesis.  相似文献

Although sheep are known to be seasonal breeders and give birth in winter, not all of them follow this trend. A few breeds can be mated and give birth all year round, meaning that mothers and neonates will have to face contrasting climatic conditions. The aim of this study was to test whether lambing season affects maternal and neonatal behaviors in D’man sheep. During four different lambing seasons (winter, autumn, summer and spring), periparturient ewes (n = 111) and their lambs (n = 213) were kept under 24-h-video surveillance in order to record postpartum behaviors. Mother-young preference was tested around 48 h after parturition. Lamb vigor was studied by the determination of birth weight, early postnatal behavior and rectal temperature at birth and 48 h later. Litter expulsion time was not affected by lambing season, but birth weight was biased against summer and winter born lambs. Ewes provided a higher intensity of care to their offspring in winter: latency for grooming was shorter and time spent grooming was longer compared to lambing in spring and summer (P = 0.01 in all cases). On the other hand, lambs were the most active in spring as they were faster to extend their hind legs (P = 0.01), stand up (P = 0.04) and reach the udder (P = 0.04). Rectal temperature at 48 h was affected by season of birth (P < 0.001) with higher values observed in summer. Glycemia variation between birth and 48 h was the lowest in spring born lambs and plasma levels increased less in spring born lambs than in winter (P < 0.0001), autumn (P < 0.0001) and summer born lambs (P < 0.0001). In the choice test, mothers clearly preferred their own young and no season effect was detected except that in the first minute of the test they spent less time near their own young in winter than in the other seasons (P = 0.04). Lambs also chose their mother successfully without any major effect of the season however, but winter born lambs were the least vocal (P = 0.01). Overall, this study show that maternal care, lamb behavior and vigor vary lightly according to seasons, albeit not in a consistent manner. In conclusion, a season is no more detrimental than another for the onset of mother-young relationships.  相似文献

A season of birth effect in addictive disorders has scarcely been studied. As smoking is known to be a highly addictive behavior, we examined whether there exists an association between season of birth and smoking habits among the general population in the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort (NFBC, n?=?8,319). The birth month of each cohort member was categorized into one of the four seasons: spring (March–May), summer (June–August), autumn (September–November), or winter (December–February). Smoking habits of the cohort members were assessed by a postal questionnaire at the age of 31 yrs. Those who reported that they regularly smoked 11 or more cigarettes/day were regarded as heavy smokers. The association between season of birth and smoking was assessed with a logistic regression analysis: first, after controlling for early pregnancy-related and perinatal characteristics (Model 1) and second, after controlling for cohort members' hospital-treated psychiatric disorders, suicide attempts, adult educational level, and marital status (Model 2). Compared to males born in winter, the likelihood for heavy daily smoking was significantly increased, up to 1.3-fold, among males born in the autumn in both logistic regression models. However, among females the likelihood for heavy smoking was statistically significantly elevated among those born during any season other than winter. Season of birth may modify the development of dopaminergic or other neurotransmitter systems divergently among males and females. Altered expression of dopaminergic genes due to environmental climatic factors could explain the association between season of birth and heavy smoking. (Author correspondence: ).  相似文献

The season of birth is an important risk factor for several diseases. We explored the relationship between birth season and lung cancer. In this population-based retrospective study, we focused on patients with lung cancer who had registered at the Beijing Institute for Cancer Research from 2003 to 2012. In total, 33,025 patients were divided into five subgroups based on their histologic classification, and these five subgroups were compared with the general population (i.e., the permanent resident population of Beijing in 2013). A binary logistic regression method with sex and age as control factors was used to evaluate the relationship between birth season and lung cancer; P < 0.01 was statistically significant. Taking winter as a reference in our analysis of the relationship between season of birth and lung cancer, we found that people who were born in other seasons had a higher probability of developing lung cancer (spring: odds ratio [OR] = 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03–1.09; summer: OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.04–1.10; autumn: OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.03–1.09) (P < 0.01). Among the five subgroups, persons with squamous cell carcinoma who were born in summer were more likely to develop lung cancer than those who were born in winter (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.02–1.15, P = 0.006). The other subgroups showed no correlation with season of birth (P > 0.01). This study demonstrates that for people born in winter, the risks of developing lung cancer and squamous cell carcinoma are comparatively lower than those for people born in other seasons. Differences in immune function and the maternal nutrition status during pregnancy of people born in different seasons may explain this finding.  相似文献

The season of birth has been suggested to influence the development of some diseases, but its role in lung fibrosis seems to not have been studied previously. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between the season of birth and fibrotic abnormalities as detected radiologically in high‐resolution computed tomography (HRCT) among workers exposed to asbestos. The HRCT examination was performed on 528 study subjects. Multiple ordinal regression analysis adjusting for covariates was used to study the relations between birth month or season and radiological fibrosis signs. Subjects born in autumn or winter had more extensive fibrotic changes than those born in spring or summer. This applied to all fibrotic changes, apart from subpleural nodules, but only the overall fibrosis score, septal lines, and honeycombing showed statistically significantly higher values in comparison to spring births. The highest scores were detected among those born in autumn and winter months (September–February). These results suggest that there are differences in fibrotic radiological abnormalities according to the season of birth in adults exposed to asbestos. Several hypotheses could explain the observed findings, including the effects of early respiratory infections, cold temperature, and differences in air pollution levels, as well as some metabolic and hormonal effects.  相似文献

The reproductive development of bull calves born in spring and autumn was compared. Mean serum LH concentrations in calves born in spring increased from week 4 to week 18 after birth and decreased by week 24. In bull calves born in autumn, mean LH concentrations increased from week 4 to week 8 after birth and remained steady until week 44. LH pulse amplitude was lower in bull calves born in autumn than in calves born in spring until week 24 of age (P < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between LH pulse frequency at week 12 after birth and age at puberty in bull calves, irrespective of season of birth, and LH pulse frequency at week 18 also tended to correlate negatively with age at puberty. Mean serum FSH concentrations, age at puberty, bodyweight, scrotal circumference, testes, prostate and vesicular gland dimensions, and ultrasonographic grey scale (pixel units) were not significantly different between bull calves born in autumn and spring. However, age and body-weight at puberty were more variable for bull calves born in autumn (P < 0.05). In a second study, bull calves born in spring received either a melatonin or sham implant immediately after birth and at weeks 6 and 11 after birth. Implants were removed at week 20. Mean LH concentrations, LH pulse frequency and amplitude, mean FSH concentrations and age at puberty did not differ between the two groups. No significant differences between groups in the growth and pixel units of the reproductive tract were observed by ultrasonography. In conclusion, although there were differences in the pattern of LH secretion in the prepubertal period between bull calves born in autumn and spring, the postnatal changes in gonadotrophin secretion were not disrupted by melatonin treatment in bull calves born in spring. Reproductive tract development did not differ between calves born in spring and autumn but age at puberty was more variable in bull calves born in autumn. LH pulse frequency during the early prepubertal period may be a vital factor in determining the age of bull calves at puberty.  相似文献

Sixty-eight female and 4 male lambs of the Chios breed born in autumn (September–October) and 48 female and 4 male kids of the Damascus breed also born in autumn (November), were used to evaluate the effect of melatonin implants (Regulin®) on the initiation of the breeding season. For each species and sex, half of the animals were either left untreated to serve as controls (C) or received ear implants (females one and males two implants) of melatonin (MEL) in May (spring). Each C and MEL group of females was kept separately and away from males for 5 weeks after implantation and then, C and MEL males were joined with the respective groups for 45 (sheep) and 35 days (goats). Animals not conceiving during the early June–July breeding season, were mated again in September (natural breeding season). The reproductive performance and the 60-day milk yield of animals giving birth during the two seasons were compared. Early in the season (mid November–December), significantly more MEL than C ewes and goats gave birth (75.5% versus 23.5%, p < 0.01; 70.8% versus 37.5%, p < 0.05, respectively). For both species, most of the other characteristics examined were significantly affected by season, but not by treatment. Females giving birth early in the season were approximately 80 days younger at parturition and recorded a lower body weight at mating than those giving birth in the natural February–March season. In the first mating period, the animals mated and conceived had similar body weights to those not mated. The natural, compared with the early June–July mating season, was associated in sheep with higher litter weight at birth (7.0 kg versus 5.8 kg, p < 0.05) and in sheep and goats with a higher number (p < 0.05) of offspring born live (1.78 versus 1.38; 2.0 versus 1.61, respectively) and weaned (1.74 versus 1.36; 1.82 versus 1.35, respectively). Total litter size at birth and 60-day milk yield after weaning, were not significantly different between the two seasons. It could be concluded that melatonin implants administered during the last month of spring in autumn-born female Chios sheep and Damascus goats, advanced the initiation of their breeding season by about 80 days when joined with young males also treated with melatonin implants. The overall reproductive performance and milk yield of animals breeding early, was satisfactory and comparable to that of animals breeding in the natural breeding season.  相似文献

The concentration of the suspended matter in Loch Etive varies with river discharge, biological production, and water movement. The contribution from phytoplankton production shows a seasonal trend, with the highest values in the spring and the lowest in winter. The carbon: chlorophyll a and nitrogen: chlorophyll a ratios in the photic zone (1,4–5, and 10 m) during the period of high production ranged from 54.0 to 400.0 and 6.0 to 38.0, respectively, the autumn bloom having higher ratios than the spring bloom. The increase of these ratios in the landward direction indicates the influence of terrestrial material. The C/N ratios in the surface (1 m) of the loch throughout the year fluctuated between 6.5–20.0, being the highest in winter. The C/N ratios in the bottom layers of the Lower Basin (40–50 m), Deep Basin (115–140 m) and the Head of the Loch (25–35 m) during the year ranged between 2.25–14.0, 5.0–38.0, and 3.0–28.5, respectively. The lowest ratios were mainly found in early autumn and associated with high levels of dissolved organic nitrogen and amonium. The accumulation of suspended matter in the deeper layers of the Deep Basin was caused by the input of organic detritus from the Lower Basin and eroded sediment from the basin slope. The lateral distribution of the C/N ratios may be related to the hydrographical features of the loch.  相似文献

There has been renewed interest in the combined use of high-rate algal ponds (HRAP) for wastewater treatment and biofuel production. Successful wastewater treatment requires year-round efficient nutrient removal while high microalgal biomass yields are required to make biofuel production cost-effective. This paper investigates the year-round performance of microalgae in a 5-ha demonstration HRAP system treating primary settled wastewater in Christchurch, New Zealand. Microalgal performance was measured in terms of biomass production, nutrient removal efficiency, light absorption and photosynthetic potential on seasonal timescales. Retention time-corrected microalgal biomass (chlorophyll a) varied seasonally, being lowest in autumn and winter (287 and 364 mg m?3day?1, respectively) and highest in summer (703 mg m?3day?1), while the conversion efficiency of light to biomass was greatest in winter (0.39 mg Chl- a per μmol) and lowest in early summer (0.08 mg Chl- a per μmol). The percentage of ammonium (NH4–N) removed was highest in spring (79 %) and summer (77 %) and lowest in autumn (47 %) and winter (53 %), while the efficiency of NH4–N removal per unit biomass was highest in autumn and summer and lowest in winter and spring. Chlorophyll-specific light absorption per unit biomass decreased as total chlorophyll increased, partially due to the package effect, particularly in summer. The proportional increase in the maximum electron transport rate from winter to summer was significantly lower than the proportional increase in the mean light intensity of the water column. We concluded that microalgal growth and nutrient assimilation was constrained in spring and summer and carbon limitation may be the likely cause.  相似文献

Investigation of seasonal changes in the composition of nematode populations, principally Ostertagia oslertagi, was conducted over 3 years at three locations in Louisiana. This is the most commonly occurring parasite of cattle in the state. Naturally infected yearling cattle were killed monthly over extended periods and tracer calves were grazed for monthly intervals from late autumn to summer at two locations in 1978–1979. Major objectives were to determine seasonal incidence of common gastrointestinal nematodes and for O. ostertagi, in particular, the time period during which larval inhibition was prevalent, circumstances under which larvae were conditioned to inhibition, and the duration of inhibition. Small numbers of inhibited O. ostertagi were recovered between November and February. Large numbers were found initially in March and increased numbers in April and May. Both normally developing and inhibition prone larvae were acquired during late winter-early spring, with the proportion of the latter being more prevalent in April and May. Evidence from tracer calves indicated that few O. ostertagi larvae were acquired after early June. Large burdens of inhibited larvae persisted in yearling cattle through summer; numbers of developing larvae and adults were minimal. Maturation of inhibited larvae occurs from August to October and in one instance was associated with cases of clinical parasitism. Factors responsible for inhibition were not defined, but increasing temperatures of late winter-early spring, host resistance, and density-dependence of populations were considered. Other abomasal genera were most prevalent in spring while intestinal genera were most common during autumn through spring.  相似文献

Birth records of the French-Canadian population for the period 1621-1765 were analyzed retrospectively to examine the effect of maternal birth season on the seasonal distribution of births. Preliminary examination indicated that there was a bimodal pattern in birth seasonality: a major peak in early spring, a trough in early summer, a minor peak in autumn, and a trough around December. Because this seasonality was strongly biased at the level of the first birth by the month of marriage, which was concentrated in November, the seasonality of nonfirst births (n = 32,926) was examined in relation to the four seasons of maternal birth. Mothers born in May-July showed a flatter monthly distribution of nonfirst births at a maternal age of 28 years or more. Analysis of marriage-first birth intervals indicated that mothers who married in August-October showed a lower percentage of immediate conception (intervals of 8-10 months), whereas those mothers born in May-July had a higher percentage of immediate conception. This difference in birth seasonality shown by mothers born in May-July is similar to results from early twentieth-century Japan. Some seasonal infertility factors could have affected the embryos at the earliest stage of pregnancy, modifying a part of the seasonal variation in birth rate.  相似文献

Longevity was significantly associated with season of birth in 101,634 individuals who died in Kiev during the period 1990-2000. The relationship between age at death and month of birth showed a very similar pattern for both men and women. Mean values for the age at death were lowest for subjects born in April-July, and highest for individuals born at the beginning and end of the year. Minimum and maximum ages at death, analysed according to month of birth, differed by 2.6 years in men and 2.3 years in women. For all major causes of death causes, the mean age at death for persons born in the fourth quarter was the highest. These results suggest that, in this population, longevity is affected by prenatal or early postnatal seasonal factors. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the rate of ageing may be programmed in response to environmental influences at critical periods of early development.  相似文献

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) agglutinins, which are abundantly present in the bark of both species, display seasonal fluctuations with regard to their content in this tissue. These seasonal changes result apparently from a circa-annual rhythm of lectin accumulation and depletion during autumn and spring, respectively. Because the bark of trees can be considered as a type of vegetative storage tissue, the results suggest that bark lectins behave as typical storage proteins.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Rhipicephalus microplus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in northwest Argentina was analysed to support the design of strategic methods for its control. Both parasitic and non‐parasitic phases were studied. The seasonal activity of R. microplus in its parasitic phase was characterized by three peaks in abundance: the first in mid–late spring; the second in summer, and the third in autumn. The non‐parasitic phase of R. microplus was characterized by a long total non‐parasitic period observed after exposures of females from mid‐summer to early autumn, a short total non‐parasitic period observed after exposures of females from late winter to late spring, a short period of larval longevity in early and mid‐summer, and no hatch of the eggs produced by females exposed in mid‐ and late autumn and winter. Treatments of cattle administered during the period from late winter to late spring will act on small cohorts of R. microplus, preventing the emergence of larger generations in summer and autumn. A 17‐week spelling period starting in late spring and early summer will be necessary to achieve optimal control of R. microplus free‐living larvae. If spelling begins in mid‐ or late summer or in autumn, the required period will be 26–27 weeks.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo determine the effect of Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccination and its timing on the risk of type 1 diabetes in Finnish children.DesignCumulative incidence and relative risk of type 1 diabetes was compared among three birth cohorts of Finnish children: those born during the 24 months before the H influenzae type b vaccination trial, those in the trial cohort who were vaccinated at 3 months of age and later with a booster vaccine, and those in the trial cohort who were vaccinated at 24 months of age only. The probability of type 1 diabetes was estimated using regression analysis assuming that there were no losses to 10 year follow up and no competing risks.SettingFinland (total population 5 million and annual birth rate 1.3%).Subjects128 936 children born from 1 October 1983 to 1 September 1985, and 116 352 children born from 1 October 1985 to 31 August 1987.ResultsNo statistically significant difference was found at any time during the 10 year follow up in the risk of type 1 diabetes between the children born before the vaccination period and those vaccinated at the age of 24 months only (relative risk 1.01). The difference in the risk between the cohort vaccinated first at the age of 3 months and the cohort vaccinated at the age of 24 months only was not statistically significant either (1.06).ConclusionIt is unlikely that H influenzae type b vaccination or its timing cause type 1 diabetes in children.

Key messages

  • The gradual increase in vaccination programmes does not permit any particular one to be pinpointed as being responsible for the increase in type 1 diabetes in Finland
  • There is no difference in the risk of type 1 diabetes between children not vaccinated against H influenzae type b and those vaccinated at the age of 24 months only
  • The difference in risk between children vaccinated against H influenzae type b at the age of 3 months and those vaccinated at the age of 24 months was not statistically significant
  • It is very unlikely that H influenzae type b vaccination or its timing causes type 1 diabetes in Finnish children

The seagrass Thalassodendron pachyrhizum den Hartog grows on limestone reef platforms. Monthly leaf biomass was measured over 2 years and showed a strong seasonal variation with maximum biomass of 500 g m−2. This seagrass loses all its leaves except for a bud and this characteristic was used to obtain a conservative estimate of productivity by change in standing stock. Leaf growth during the growing season was 6.6 mg Cg−1 day−1. Leaf length frequencies showed that new leaves formed during autumn (March–April). They grew from autumn until spring (November) and began to senesce in summer, followed by leaf fall in late summer (February–March). The growth of rhizome shoots “invading” free substratum space and the growth of new stems was measured for a 300-day period; about 9 leaves were produced in this period.  相似文献

Numerous studies have shown an association between low weight at birth and being born small for gestational age (SGA) on the one hand and risk of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes on the other. Our studies in twins have indicated a non-genetic age-dependent origin of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes associated with being born SGA. In order to gain insight into the molecular metabolic defects and mechanisms linking SGA with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, we performed a series of experiments in young and elderly twins, and, in particular, in young men (aged 19-23 years) with a weight at birth at term in the lowest 10th percentile with no family history of diabetes. The control group included age-matched men with birth weights at term in the upper normal range. While body mass index and waist-to-hip ratios were similar in the individuals born SGA and controls, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry studies documented a higher degree of abdominal obesity in the men who had a low weight at birth. Using the gold standard hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp technique combined with glucose tracers and studies of forearm glucose uptake, we found an impairment of insulin-stimulated glycolytic flux and reduced forearm (muscle) glucose uptake in the face of normal whole-body glucose uptake. In addition, we found a significantly decreased insulin secretion rate during oral glucose ingestion after correction for insulin action (disposition index), a paradoxical enhanced insulin suppression of hepatic glucose production and lower fasting plasma glycerol levels, suggesting impaired lipolysis. Finally, analysis of skeletal muscle biopsies showed reduced muscle expression of several key proteins involved in insulin signalling and glucose transport, including protein kinase C-zeta, the two subunits of phosphoinositol 3-kinase (i.e., p85alpha and p110beta) and the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter, Glut-4, in individuals of low birth weight. In conclusion, being born SGA and of low birth weight is associated with type 2 diabetes in a non-genetic manner, and programming of muscle insulin action and signalling represents an early mechanism responsible for this association.  相似文献

Recent genome-wide association studies in East Asian poulations reported the association of KCNQ1 variants with type 2 diabetes. In the present study, we first investigated the association between rs2237892 in KCNQ1 and type 2 diabetes in a Hubei Han Chinese population (223 type 2 diabetes patients and 201 controls). The frequencies of CC genotype and C allele in type 2 diabetes patients were significantly higher than those of controls group (CC: 51.6% vs 39.3%, P=0.001; C: 72.2% vs 61.2%, P=0.001). The odds ratio for the risk allele C was 1.65 (95%CI 1.23–2.2, P=0.001). Then, we systematically reviewed the association of SNPs (rs2237892, rs2237895, rs2237897, rs2074196) in KCNQ1 with type 2 diabetes risk in a meta-analysis. Significant heterogeneity between studies was found for SNPs rs2237892 and rs2237897. Combined odds ratios of the rs2237892 C, rs2237895 C, rs2237897 C, rs2074196 G allele were 1.35 (95% CI 1.29–1.41, P<0.0001), 1.27 (95%CI 1.23–1.32, P<0.0001), 1.32 (95%CI 1.21–1.43, P<0.0001), 1.30 (95%CI 1.25–1.35, P<0.0001) respectively. Our results and meta-analysis demonstrated that KCNQ1 polymorphisms were reproducibly associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes in Han Chinese and East Asian populations.  相似文献
