1. Environmental conditions experienced early in life may have long-lasting effects on individual performance, thereby creating 'silver-spoon effects'. 2. We used 15 years of data from a North American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus Erxleben) population to investigate influences of food availability, density and spring temperature experienced early in life on reproduction and survival of female squirrels during adulthood. 3. We found that spring temperature and food availability did not affect female survival after 1 year of age, whereas higher squirrel densities led to lower survival, thereby affecting longevity and lifetime fitness. 4. In addition, both food availability experienced between birth and weaning, and spring temperature in the year of birth, had long-lasting positive effects on female reproductive success. These results emphasize the critical effect environmental conditions during the early life stages can have on the lifetime performance of small mammals. 5. These long-term effects of early food and temperature were apparent only once we controlled for conditions experienced during adulthood. This suggests that silver-spoon effects can be masked when conditions experienced early in life are correlated to some environmental conditions experienced later in life. 6. The general importance of silver-spoon effects for adult demographic performance might therefore be underestimated, and taking adult environment into account appears to be necessary when studying long-term cohort effects. 相似文献

Individuals often interact more closely with some members of the population (e.g., offspring, siblings, or group members) than they do with other individuals. This structuring of interactions can lead to multilevel natural selection, where traits expressed at the group‐level influence fitness alongside individual‐level traits. Such multilevel selection can alter evolutionary trajectories, yet is rarely quantified in the wild, especially for species that do not interact in clearly demarcated groups. We quantified multilevel natural selection on two traits, postnatal growth rate and birth date, in a population of North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). The strongest level of selection was typically within‐acoustic social neighborhoods (within 130 m of the nest), where growing faster and being born earlier than nearby litters was key, while selection on growth rate was also apparent both within‐litters and within‐study areas. Higher population densities increased the strength of selection for earlier breeding, but did not influence selection on growth rates. Females experienced especially strong selection on growth rate at the within‐litter level, possibly linked to the biased bequeathal of the maternal territory to daughters. Our results demonstrate the importance of considering multilevel and sex‐specific selection in wild species, including those that are territorial and sexually monomorphic. 相似文献

We isolated 18 polymorphic microsatellite loci to be used for pedigree analysis in a wild population of North American red squirrels, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus. Allelic diversity and observed heterozygosity ranged from six to 13 and 0.39 to 0.89, respectively, in a sample of 93 individuals. Up to 13 sets of primers also amplify in other rodent species. 相似文献

Abstract: The Mount Graham red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus grahamensis) is constrained to the Pinaleño Mountains in southeastern Arizona, USA. The population's endangered status and extensive forest damage from insects and fire warrants a better understanding of habitat variables important for nest site selection. We examined characteristics of cavity (n = 91) and drey (n = 38) nests and compared these to random sites (n = 113). Dreys were found primarily in Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and corkbark fir (Abies lasiocarpa var. arizonica). Cavity nests occurred primarily in aspen (Populus tremuloides) and corkbark fir. Squirrels selected nest sites with higher canopy cover and more corkbark fir, decayed logs, and living trees. Forest management plans emphasizing thinning must consider how altering these habitat characteristics could affect availability and suitability of tree stands for nesting squirrels. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Habitat destruction and degradation are major factors in reducing abundance, placing populations and species in jeopardy. Monitoring changes to habitat and identifying locations of habitat for a species, after disturbance, can assist mitigation of the effects of human-caused or -amplified habitat disturbance. Like many areas in the western United States, the Pinaleño Mountains of southeastern Arizona, USA, have suffered catastrophic fire and large-scale insect outbreaks in the last decade. The federally endangered Mt. Graham red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus grahamensis) is only found in the Pinaleño Mountains, and to assess effects of forest disturbance on habitat we modeled their potential habitat by identifying characteristics of cover surrounding their centrally defended middens. We classified high-spatial resolution satellite imagery into ground cover classes, and we used logistic regression to determine areas used by squirrels. We also used known midden locations in conjunction with slope, elevation, and aspect to create a predictive habitat map. Squirrels selected areas of denser forest with higher seedfall for midden sites. Among active middens, those in the densest and least damaged forests were occupied in more seasons than those in more fragmented and damaged areas. The future conservation of red squirrels and the return of healthy mature forests to the Pinaleño Mountains will rely on preservation of mixed conifer zones of the mountain and active restoration of spruce-fir forests to return them to squirrel habitat. Our ability to evaluate the spectrum of fine- to coarse-scale disturbance effects (individual tree mortality to area wide boundaries of a disturbance) with high-resolution satellite imagery shows the utility of this technique for monitoring future disturbances to habitat of imperiled species. 相似文献

Red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) defend individual, food-basedterritories year round. These territories are crucial for overwintersurvival, yet some female red squirrels in northern populationsbequeath their territories to offspring and search for a newone. Bequeathal involves active, strategic dispersal by breedingfemales. Our study documents this unusual behavior and investigatesits correlates in two red squirrel populations in northern Canada.Thirty percent of breeding females dispersed. Bequeathal wasrelated to breeding date, with late-breeding females more oftendispersing, but was not related detectably to female conditionor territory quality. As an underlying trade-off, early-bornjuveniles more likely acquired a territory independently, butearly-breeding females lost mass and may have increased theirrisk of territory loss. We suggest that bequeathal has evolvedas a consequence of condition dependence in breeding date coupledwith limited resources. 相似文献

Landscape structure can affect dispersal and gene flow in a species. In urban areas, buildings, roads, and small habitat patches make the landscape highly fragmented and can inhibit movement and affect dispersal behavior. Similarly, in rural forested areas, large open areas, such as fields, may act as barriers to movement. We studied how landscape structure affects natal dispersal distances of Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) in an urban area and a rural area in Finland, by monitoring juvenile red squirrels with radio telemetry. We observed extremely long dispersal distances—up to 16 km—in the rural study area, but shorter distances—on average only half a kilometer—in the urban study area. The landscape structure affected the eventual dispersal paths; in the rural landscape, dispersers favored spruce dominated areas and avoided fields along their dispersal route, although they occasionally even crossed wide fields. In the urban landscape, squirrels preferred areas with deciduous or coniferous trees. The movement steps made by dispersers were longer in the more hostile landscape compared to forested areas. Despite these effects on movement path, the landscape structure only had a minor effect on straight line dispersal distances moved from the natal nest. In other words, individuals moved longer distances and were likely to circumvent barriers in their path, but this did not affect how far they settled from their natal home. This result indicates that, although landscape structure has obvious effects on movement, it still may have only a small effect on other aspects of the population, for example, gene flow. 相似文献

Roost site selection is a state‐dependent process, affected by the individual's costs and benefits of roosting at a specific site in the available environment. Costs and benefits of different roost sites vary in relation to intrinsic factors and environmental conditions. Thus, the cost–benefit functions of roost sites are expected to differ between seasons and life‐history stages, resulting in adjustments in roost site selection. Studying roost site selection throughout the year therefore provides information about year‐round habitat requirements at different life‐history stages. However, little is known about the roosting behaviour of birds. Here, the roost site selection of Little Owls Athene noctua was studied by repeated daytime location of 24 adult and 75 juvenile radiotagged individuals from July to November. Little Owls preferred sheltered roost sites such as tree cavities with multiple entrances. They increasingly used sheltered sites from summer to winter and preferentially used sheltered roost sites with low ambient temperatures. Juveniles used significantly less sheltered sites during dispersal than before and afterwards, and used less sheltered sites than adults within their home‐range. The survival probability of birds roosting frequently at exposed sites was reduced. Roost site selection is probably driven by the two mechanisms of predator avoidance and thermoregulation, and the costs of natal dispersal may include increased predation threat and higher energy expenditure for thermoregulation. We suggest that adequate roost sites, such as multi‐entrance tree cavities, are an important habitat requirement for Little Owls and that habitat quality can be affected by manipulating their availability. 相似文献

Red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) defend food-based territoriesyear round, and juveniles must acquire a territory before winterto survive. We experimentally removed territory owners duringthe time that juveniles were becoming independent to examinethe effect of local vacancies on dispersal patterns. Juvenilesattempted to take over removal territories most frequently.However, females with offspring still on the natal territoryactually took over twice as many territories as juveniles. Thesefemales did not appear to move because of low reproductive potentialor to increase territory quality. Dispersal is a fundamental process affecting the genetic structureof populations, speciation, and extinction. Nevertheless, ourunderstanding of the evolution of dispersal is limited by ourpaucity of knowledge on dispersal decisions at the individuallevel. We investigated the effect of interactions between residentsand juvenile dispersers on individual dispersal and settlementdecisions in Siberian jays (Perisoreus infaustus). In this group-livingbird species, some offspring remain on the parental territoryfor up to 3 years (retained juveniles) whereas other offspringdisperse within 2 months of fledging (dispersers). We foundthat retained juveniles constrained settlement decisions ofdispersers by aggressively chasing dispersers off their territory,resulting in dispersers continuing to disperse and settlingin groups without retained juveniles. Experimental removal ofmale breeders during the dispersal period also demonstratedthat dispersers were unable to settle in high-quality breedingopenings, which were instead filled by older nonbreeding residents.Rather, dispersers immigrated into groups without retained offspringwhere they became subordinate group members, queuing for a breedingopening. Also, they preferably settled in groups with shortqueues where no same-sex juveniles were present. Dispersal didnot inflict a cost to dispersers through increased mortality.However, the presence of immigrants was costly for breedersbecause it increased the rate of conflicts during the breedingseason which negatively affected nestling condition. These resultsdemonstrate that resident individuals constrain both dispersaland settlement decisions of dispersers. Social interactionsbetween residents and dispersers can thus be a key factor tounderstand the evolution of dispersal. 相似文献

ABSTRACT We examined the effect of harvesting intensity and pattern on red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus), and yellow-pine chipmunks (Tamias amoenus) in mature inland Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii glauca) forests in south-central British Columbia, Canada. We sampled squirrels 1 year before harvesting through 4 years after harvesting and estimated population parameters using open-population models. Relative to unharvested stands, each of the 3 species showed a strong response to tree removal. From 2 years to 4 years after logging, red squirrel density was 40% (SE = 7.1) lower in stands with 50% basal-area tree removal. From 1 year and up to 4 years after logging, northern flying squirrel density averaged 60% (SE = 5.2) lower in harvested treatments regardless of intensity or pattern of logging. In contrast, density of yellow-pine chipmunks increased markedly with increased logging intensity. Beginning 3 years after logging, yellow-pine chipmunk density was 734% (SE = 269) greater in stands with 50% basal-area tree removal. In the short term, harvesting intensity was a more important determinant of squirrel density than harvesting pattern. Retaining >10 m2 per ha of live residual stand structure in mature inland Douglas-fir forests maintained habitat for forest-dependent species such as red squirrels and northern flying squirrels, albeit at lower densities. 相似文献

Dispersal is nearly universal; yet, which sex tends to disperse more and their success thereafter depends on the fitness consequences of dispersal. We asked if lifetime fitness differed between residents and immigrants (successful between‐population dispersers) and their offspring using 29 years of monitoring from North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) in Canada. Compared to residents, immigrant females had 23% lower lifetime breeding success (LBS), while immigrant males had 29% higher LBS. Male immigration and female residency were favoured. Offspring born to immigrants had 15–43% lower LBS than offspring born to residents. We conclude that immigration benefitted males, but not females, which appeared to be making the best of a bad lot. Our results are in line with male‐biased dispersal being driven by local mate competition and local resource enhancement, while the intergenerational cost to immigration is a new complication in explaining the drivers of sex‐biased dispersal. 相似文献

Abstract Despite their importance in evolutionary biology, heritability and the strength of natural selection have rarely been estimated in wild populations of iteroparous species or have usually been limited to one particular event during an organism's lifetime. Using an animal-model restricted maximum likelihood and phenotypic selection models, we estimated quantitative genetic parameters and the strength of lifetime selection on parturition date and litter size at birth in a natural population of North American red squirrels, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus. Litter size at birth and parturition date had low heritabilities ( h2 = 0.15 and 0.16, respectively). We considered potential effects of temporal environmental covariances between phenotypes and fitness and of spatial environmental heterogeneity in estimates of selection. Selection favored early breeders and females that produced litter sizes close to the population average. Stabilizing selection on litter size at birth may occur because of a trade-off between number of offspring produced per litter and offspring survival or a trade-off between a female's fecundity and her future reproductive success and survival. 相似文献

Dispersal patterns of individuals within populations have implicationsfor the social and genetic structure of local populations.Knowing what factors determine individual dispersal behavioris essential for predicting how the population structure willbe influenced by environmental and demographic changes. Inthis study, I investigated whether the settling pattern of
individuals breeding for the first time within a colony of greatcormorants was determined by ecological or genetic factors.Furthermore, I examined the possible effects of age and gender.First-time breeders that came back to breed within their natalcolony showed strong philopatry toward their natal breedingsites. Because of the simultaneous strong fidelity of breederstoward their former breeding sites, this caused kin to clusterto some extent around the natal site. However, genetic factors(attraction to close kin) are less likely to explain natalphilopatry than ecological ones (attraction to the natal siteitself). Younger first-time breeders were more philopatric than
older ones, in accordance with a decrease in the predictabilityof the quality of breeding sites with increasing time lags.Furthermore, males dispersed farther from the natal breedingsite than females. This result is contrary to what is generallyexpected for a breeding system where the male is dependent
on a breeding territory for mate acquisition. I suggest thatthis sex difference could arise because first-time breedingmales are constrained from settling in the natal site by interferencecompetition with older males or because males are better informedabout alternative breeding sites of high quality within thecolony. 相似文献

Proximate cues for animal dispersal are complex and varied. Multiple cues may provide information about different aspects of habitat quality, and these aspects may interact with each other, as well as with population density in different ways. We examined how individuals incorporate multiple cues in their decisions to emigrate and immigrate in the colonial orb‐weaving spider, Cyrtophora citricola. We manipulated maternal feeding as a cue for prey abundance and measured the size of the maternal web, which provides a limited space for philopatric offspring and a second potential dispersal cue. In addition, we recorded all immigration events to determine dispersal distances and the cues juveniles may use in settlement. Dispersal increased when mothers were poorly fed, web sizes were small and clutch sizes were large. In addition to these overall effects, maternal feeding also interacted with web size, indicating that offspring from well‐fed mothers were more tolerant of high sibling densities. We also detected a threshold for the effect of clutch size on dispersal for the first egg sac: below 20 offspring, there was no effect of clutch size, but dispersal increased with clutch size for larger clutches. Dispersal distances were often short, and immigrants preferred sheltered trees and those occupied by adult females. Dispersal not only depended on multiple cues, but these cues interacted, and the importance of web size suggested that saturation of the natal web might force dispersal, at least for spiders with poorly‐fed mothers. How one aspect of habitat quality influences dispersal can therefore depend on the state of other aspects of habitat quality. In particular, some natal resources, such as a nest or territory, may become saturated and limit group size, but this limit will also depend on other factors, such as prey availability. 相似文献

Nest-site availability limits cavity-using populations in many harvested forests; however, little is known about the extent of nest-site limitation in mature forests with a full complement of excavator species and intact processes of cavity creation and loss. To examine the role of nest-site availability in limiting cavity-using populations in mature mixed conifer forests in central British Columbia, Canada, we conducted an 11-year before-after control-impact experiment in which we increased nest-site availability via nest box addition. Our 7 sites (3 treatments, 4 controls) had low cavity densities (<2/ha) prior to treatment and cavity occupation rates were also low (<10%/yr), which is a relationship often cited in the literature as evidence of non-limitation in cavity-nesting populations. Following nest box addition at our treatment sites, which tripled the availability of cavities, total density of bird and mammal nests more than tripled. Density of mountain chickadee (Poecile gambeli) nests increased 9-fold on treatment sites and returned to pre-treatment levels following box removal, suggesting that chickadee populations were limited by cavity availability at our study sites. Density of red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) nests and roosts also increased significantly at treatment sites following box addition and declined following box removal. We noted little change in chickadee or squirrel nest density at control sites monitored concurrently. Squirrels preferred large-sized over small-sized boxes, and significantly enlarged the entrance areas of small boxes by chewing, suggesting that there may have been a shortage of suitable nest and roost sites for them in our study area. We contend that low cavity occupancy rates may not accurately reflect nest-site availability for cavity nesters in mature forests, and that cavity size may influence the true availability of cavities on the landscape. © 2011 The Wildlife Society. 相似文献

During natal dispersal, young animals leave their natal area and search for a new area to live. In species in which individuals inhabit different types of habitat, experience with a natal habitat may increase the probability that a disperser will select the same type of habitat post-dispersal (natal habitat preference induction or NHPI). Despite considerable interest in the ecological and the evolutionary implications of NHPI, we lack empirical evidence that it occurs in nature. Here we show that dispersing brush mice (Peromyscus boylii) are more likely to search and settle within their natal habitat type than expected based on habitat availability. These results document the occurrence of NHPI in nature and highlight the relevance of experience-generated habitat preferences for ecological and evolutionary processes. 相似文献

Abstract: Exposure to environmental features early in life potentially can influence the kinds of places animals select to live later in life. We examined whether there is evidence that Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii) hatched in an urban environment choose sites with features similar to their natal areas when they nest for the first time. The features we examined were the nest tree species and the level of development surrounding the nest tree. We banded nestling and fledgling Cooper's hawks in Tucson, Arizona, USA, from 1994 to 2004. We then monitored nests in Tucson to identify hawks that had been hatched in the city and eventually secured a breeding site. Percent cover of buildings around first breeding nests was not related to percent cover of buildings around natal nests for either sex. There was some evidence that being hatched in a particular tree species influenced choice of tree species at first breeding sites for males, but the influence was weak. In contrast, tree species in which first-time breeders built their nests, and the sites where the trees were located relative to development, were proportional to what was available in the Tucson metropolitan area. Our data suggest that natal experience played a limited role in nest-site selection by Cooper's hawks in Tucson for the features we examined. If learning occurred, it could have been for the general structure of natal sites. Thus, any small grove of large trees planted in Tucson could be used as a nest site by Cooper's hawks regardless of the level of development surrounding the nest. 相似文献
