Buccinanops globulosus is an edible marine gastropod that is being captured by artisanal fishermen without management regulations. As basic knowledge on population features is required in case a sustained commercial exploitation of this species is established, we estimated and compared the age and growth of B. globulosus in two populations separated by 16?km, inhabiting similar physical environments but different anthropic influence. Our results, based on stable oxygen isotope analysis and best fitted models by likelihood ratio tests, detected differences in age and growth between both samplings. Maximum shell marks suggest one year difference between populations. Richards was chosen as the best fitting model for both sampling sites and significant differences were observed between them. Human activities could be causing the age reduction among other irreversible effects on the population under anthropic influence. This should be considered when developing sustainable management regulations for this fishery resource, especially those based on shell/age size.  相似文献

Morphological variation among natural populations is a phenomenon commonly observed in marine invertebrates and well studied, particularly, in shelled gastropods. The nassariid Buccinanops globulosus is interesting to study shell shape variation because it exhibits strong interpopulation differences in life history features, including maximum size, fecundity and growth rate. In this study, we examined the pattern of variation in size and shell shape among populations and between sexes of B. globulosus (Bahía San Antonio 40°29′S 63°01′W, Playa Villarino 40°45′S 64°40′W and Bahía Nueva 42°46′S 65°02′W). In particular, we used geometric morphometric techniques to test: (1) whether the two components of shell morphology (size and shape) are independent and (2) whether shape differences between sexes are consistently found among populations, regardless of their body sizes. Our results show shell shape variation between the populations of B. globulosus of northern Patagonia. Intra-specific shell shape variation is affected by body size, indicating allometry. Regardless of the size differences, individuals from Playa Villarino have high-spired shells, and shorter apertures and wider columellar area than individuals from the other populations. Also, sex-related shape differences were consistently found at each population, thus suggesting a common sexual dimorphism in shell morphology for this species. The functional significance of the variability found is discussed in terms of the flexibility of developmental programmes for morphology as well as the evolution of phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Buccinanops globulosus mated all year round, with higher frequency from May to September, prior to spawning months. Gravid females were found between October and March. Oviposition peaked during rising temperatures and longest daylength while hatching peaked with high water temperature and declining daylength. Gravid females measured between 20 and 41?mm in shell length. The spawn consisted on average of 31 egg capsules, each containing 1266 eggs. Embryos usually completed development within each egg capsule by ingesting small fragments of the uncleaved nurse eggs, which were not a limiting resource. Egg capsules with more than one embryo were not common; in those cases, the embryos had different sizes probably related to intracapsular competition for nutrients, and were on average smaller than solitary embryos in the other capsules. Embryos hatched as crawling juveniles with a mean hatchling shell length of ~3.4?mm. In a few cases, malformed embryos were found, but it was not a common phenomenon. The information recorded in this study, as the minimum reproductive size and spawning season, is valuable for fisheries management.  相似文献

The marine gastropod Buccinanops globulosus is known to have high imposex incidence in areas moderately polluted by tributyltin (TBT). Acute toxicity was previously studied in adults but no information is known about embryonic intracapsular development. To estimate the potential effects of organotin pollution on the progeny of B. globulosus, acute toxicity tests were conducted on encapsulated and excapsulated pre-hatching embryos. The lethal median concentration estimated for 96?h (LC50 96?h) in B. globulosus excapsulated embryos was 196.70?µg?TBTCl?L?1, while in encapsulated embryos it was 2951.28?µg?TBTCl?L?1. The LC50 96?h was 15-fold higher for encapsulated embryos compared to excapsulated embryos, denoting egg capsule protection against pollutants from the external environment. Our results show that TBT pollution can have significant effects in molluscs other than the chronic effect of imposex.  相似文献

Regeneration of the calcareous rigiclaudent operculum following severe, non‐lethal, predatory attacks is described in two specimens of the characteristic Silurian gastropod Oriostoma from the English Midlands. This is the first record of the regeneration of opercula in Palaeozoic gastropods and of opercula conjoined with shells that have been repaired after significant, failed, durophagous attacks. In one specimen, a series of repaired injuries culminates in a repaired aperture closed by the operculum. In the second specimen, new shell growth has failed to recover the full extent of the original broken whorl, and the new aperture and operculum, though well developed, are smaller than the originals. Both opercula are unusually thin centrally when compared to other, strongly domed, Oriostoma opercula.  相似文献

This study investigated whether teeth and dorsal fin spines could be used as non‐lethal methods of age estimation for a vulnerable and highly valued tropical fisheries species, coral trout Plectropomus leopardus. Age estimation of individuals from 2 to 9 years old revealed that dorsal spines represent an accurate ageing method (90% agreement with otoliths) that was more precise [average per cent error (APE) = 4·1, coefficient of variation (c.v .) = 5·8%] than otoliths (APE = 6·2, c.v . = 8·7%). Of the three methods for age estimation (otoliths, dorsal spines and teeth), spines were the most time and cost efficient. An aquarium‐based study also found that removing a dorsal spine or tooth did not affect survivorship or growth of P. leopardus. No annuli were visible in teeth despite taking transverse and longitudinal sections throughout the tooth and trialling several different laboratory methods. Although teeth may not be suitable for estimating age of P. leopardus, dorsal spines appear to be an acceptably accurate, precise and efficient method for non‐lethal ageing of individuals from 2 to 9 years old in this tropical species.  相似文献

Growth marks in calcareous shells or skeleton parts of benthic invertebrates are often assumed to be formed annually and hence are used for ageing purposes. For some Antarctic species this assumption has been validated by tagging experiments or direct monitoring of growth throughout the year. Here we use the record of stable isotope ratios (δ18O and δ13C) deposited in shell carbonate of Laternula elliptica from King George Island to demonstrate that shell growth bands are formed annually in this species. The brown-banded bamboo shark, Chiloscyllium punctatum, is the most common shark caught in coastal commercial fisheries throughout Southeast Asia, yet there is a lack of the life-history information necessary for reliable stock assessments. The authors estimated growth rates and age at maturity using analysis of growth bands in vertebral centra. They trialled four different techniques to enhance the visibility and improve identification of the putative annual growth bands necessary for age estimation. The authors found that the burn method on whole vertebral centra provided the most readable and consistent results for age analysis. The logistic model was chosen as the best-fit growth model for age estimation of 330 individual C. punctatum from Indonesia. Several age verification methods, including marginal increment ratio and length-frequency analysis, were performed with the support of age validation through the use of calcein-labelled vertebrae from two sharks maintained in captivity. This study found that C. punctatum from Indonesian waters is a fast-growing species that can grow up to 18 cm year−1, reach an estimated maximum total length of 1 m, mature at c. 6.5 years and live for up to 14 years.  相似文献

Growth rings present in whole and sectioned statoliths were used to determine the age of red whelks Neptunea antiqua, from the North Sea. Validation of the periodicity of the rings was established in four whelks by comparing the number of statolith rings with the number of seasonal Mg:Ca ratio cycles present in shell calcium carbonate samples drilled sequentially from along the growth axis. There was exact correspondence between the number of growth rings and the number of element ratio cycles in two of the shells and a 1-year difference in the estimated age between the two methods in the other two shells, evidence which is strongly indicative of an annual periodicity of deposition to the statolith rings. The estimated age of the whelks using the statolith rings varied between 4 years (shell length 102 mm) and 17 years (shell length 148 mm). The age of the whelks ascertained from the statoliths was compared with age estimates from the number of adventitious layers in sectioned opercula. The number of adventitious layers in whelks from 51 to 148 mm shell length ranged between 1 and 12 years. No significant difference was observed between the number of strongly defined statolith rings and number of opercula adventitious layers.  相似文献

In spite of the exuberance of recent approaches to age determination of fish, many ecologists are convinced that the most valid method is age reading from permanent marks or growth rings laid on skeletal parts. Of the known structures used, only the vertebrae are suitable and readable for a large variety of species and sizes. Examination of different skeletal structures of Labeo horie, a Cyprinid collected from Jebel Aulia reservoir, revealed that the frontal bone carried well-defined growth rings. The validity of these rings was checked against other direct and indirect methods of age determination. Results proved to be statistically valid, and the frontal bone offers an additional device of age determination of L. horie.  相似文献

Wave exposure has strong influences on population density, morphology and behaviour of intertidal species in temperate zones, but little is known about how intertidal organisms in tropical regions respond to gradients in wave exposure. We tested whether dislodgement force and shell shape of a tropical gastropod, Cittarium pica, differs among shores that vary in wave exposure. After adjusting for body size, we found that C. pica from exposed shores required greater dislodgement force to remove them from the shore, had slightly larger opercula (the closure to the shell aperture), and were slightly squatter in shape (reduced in shell height relative to shell width) than C. pica from sheltered shores. These morphological adjustments are consistent with those observed in temperate gastropods, which are argued to represent adaptive responses to the risk of mortality associated with dislodgement.  相似文献

Opercular characters are of major importance to understanding the living and fossil groups in the vetigastropod superfamily TurbinoideaRafinesque. Here we evaluate current knowledge of fossil turbinoid opercula in the light of a newly discovered Recent colloniid with an unfamiliar opercular morphology. The operculum ofLiotipoma n. gen. has a multispiral and conical inner surface; the outer surface is rugose with a central pit. Similar opercula are known from the Late CretaceousSohlipoma n. gen. and the Early CretaceousPetropoma Gabb. These genera are assigned to the here redefined colloniid subfamily PetropomatinaeCox inKnight et al., which was based originally onGabb’s misinterpretation of the inner and outer sides of the operculum ofPetropoma peruana Gabb. In contrast, opercula of most living members of Colloniinae s.S., have a flat inner side with a multispiral pattern that becomes paucispiral. In addition, opercula typical for living Turbinidae are here traced to the Late Cretaceous. The new genusLiotipoma has lamellar sculpture like that of Liotiidae H. & A.Adams, showing that such sculpture is not restricted to the Liotiidae. We also reject previous allocations of the Permian DichostasiinaeYochelson and Jurassic Cross-ostomatinaeCox inKnight et al. to Liotiidae, and find an undisputed earliest known Jurassic occurrence for the Liotiidae. The recent suggestion that the change from corneous to calcareous opercula among turbinids occurred concurrently with a change in pattern from multispiral to paucispiral is not supported by our data.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of crocodilians leads to the formation of particular assemblages by accumulation of carcasses on the bottom or at the edge of water points, in addition to the characteristic marks it leaves on bones, making crocodilians important taphonomic agents. We report here the case of a Pleurosternidae turtle shell, Pleurosternon bullockii (Owen 1842 ), discovered in 2014 in Angeac‐Charente in south‐western France. The shell shows a range of tooth marks left by a crocodyliform. Several elements designate Goniopholis as the most likely author of the marks and support the use of the ‘nutcracker’ technique. Some marks appear to have healed, while others suggest that this P. bullockii individual suffered from shell diseases. Many turtle remains and some ornithomimosaur dinosaur bones from Angeac‐Charente bear marks of a crocodyliform attack.  相似文献

Synopsis We determined age and size at sexual maturity in male and female winter skates, Leucoraja ocellata, from the western Gulf of Maine. Age estimated from vertebral band counts resulted in an Index of Average Percent Error (IAPE) of 5.6%, suggesting that this method represents an accurate approach to the age assessment of L. ocellata. Size at sexual maturity was assessed by evaluating three endpoints: steroid hormone concentrations, and morphological and histological criteria. Our results suggest that 50% maturity in males occurs at a total length of 730 mm and at 11 years of age. For females, our results suggest that 50% maturity occurs at a total length of 760 mm and between 11 and 12 years of age. Collectively, our study suggests that analyzing a combination of reproductive parameters offers an accurate estimation of sexual maturity in the winter skate. Moreover, our results indicate that L. ocellata is a late-maturing and long-lived species, characteristics which make it highly susceptible to over-exploitation by commercial fisheries.  相似文献

Orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus) at the Singapore Zoological Gardens were presented with two thick-shelled edible seeds, Mezzettia parviflora (Annonaceae) and Macadamia ternifolia (Proteaceae) in order to estimate their maximum bite forces. The orang-utans could break the Macadamia seeds in one bite, while those of Mezzettia required repeated attempts. Examination of shell fragments showed that many had scratches and some had clear, but small (ca. 1–2 mm diameter), impressions on them. Building upon this information, semi-imitative tests were performed on the seeds in a universal testing machine by loading them in compression with either flat plates or metal casts of orang-utan cheek teeth. The maximum forces required to break the seeds were similar with both the flat plates and the metal teeth; the average for the Macadamia seeds being about 2,000 N (which forms a minimum estimate for the maximum bite forces in orang-utans) and for the Mezzettia seeds, 6,000 N. The work done with the metal teeth was much greater than with the plates. A mechanical analysis showed that this extra work went into producing permanent impressions (“bite marks”) in the shell with the tooth cusps. These impressions were larger than those found on the shells of seeds bitten by the orang-utans. Nevertheless, it is shown theoretically that the size of these indentations can give an estimate of the bite forces used. The maximum force developed in the machine tests with the metal teeth was correlated with the force calculated from analysis of the bite marks. The method is suitable for use in field studies where the marks left on remnants of hard foods eaten by primates may be used to estimate, very roughly, the forces used to produce them. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Carbonate production by large benthic foraminifers is sometimes comparable to that of corals and coralline algae, and contributes to sedimentation on reef islands and beaches in the tropical Pacific. Population dynamic data, such as population density and size structure (size-frequency distribution), are vital for an accurate estimation of shell production of foraminifers. However, previous production estimates in tropical environments were based on a limited sampling period with no consideration of seasonality. In addition, no comparisons were made of various estimation methods to determine more accurate estimates. Here we present the annual gross shell production rate of Baculogypsina sphaerulata, estimated based on population dynamics studied over a 2-yr period on an ocean reef flat of Funafuti Atoll (Tuvalu, tropical South Pacific). The population density of B. sphaerulata increased from January to March, when northwest winds predominated and the study site was on the leeward side of reef islands, compared to other seasons when southeast trade winds predominated and the study site was on the windward side. This result suggested that wind-driven flows controlled the population density at the study site. The B. sphaerulata population had a relatively stationary size-frequency distribution throughout the study period, indicating no definite intensive reproductive period in the tropical population. Four methods were applied to estimate the annual gross shell production rates of B. sphaerulata. The production rates estimated by three of the four methods (using monthly biomass, life tables and growth increment rates) were in the order of hundreds of g CaCO3 m−2 yr−1 or cm−3 m−2 yr−1, and the simple method using turnover rates overestimated the values. This study suggests that seasonal surveys should be undertaken of population density and size structure as these can produce more accurate estimates of shell productivity of large benthic foraminifers.

贵州剑河寒武系凯里组软舌螺化石丰富、埋藏形式多样,其中以脊状单臂螺Haplophrentis carinatus化石数量最多、保存最为完整。过去有关学者对凯里组单臂螺化石的研究主要集中在化石分类学方面,对脊状单臂螺埋藏特征及与其他生物共生关系缺乏深入探讨。本文对324块脊状单臂螺化石标本进行系统研究对比后发现,凯里组脊状单臂螺口盖化石埋藏形式有四类:口盖单独保存、口盖以内模或外模化石形式保存、口盖与锥壳完全绞合保存、口盖与锥壳不完全绞合保存;附肢保存较少;锥壳多以内模化石形式保存;脊状单臂螺内模化石与印痕化石上普遍出现类似软体保存形成的三分叉结构,这类三分叉结构属于后期埋藏因素造成的次生结构。文中还对脊状单臂螺与始海百合共生关系进行探讨,并将二者共生关系归为偏害共生。  相似文献

Two methods of age determination in newts. Triturus vulgaris and T. cristatus, have been examined and compared: (1) Counting growth rings in the bone tissue of humerus or femur is an accurate method, but possible supplementary rings may make the reading difficult. The innermost periosteal zone corresponds to the first year of life. Later, new zones are added each year. (2) Every second year after maturing a new lobe is developed on the testes. Knowing the juvenile life span in a population, it is possible to determine the age of male newts with a possible error of one year. The correlation between growth marks and testis lobes in T. vulgaris and T. cristatus is highly significant. The testis lobing method, however, is less applicable in older newts, since no more than three or four lobes can be developed on a testis.  相似文献

Recent studies have reported that crustacean age determination is possible. We applied a direct ageing method (i.e. transverse cross sectioning of gastric ossicles) to a subtropical freshwater crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) sourced from an aquaculture population. Growth mark periodicity and the potential for chronological depositions were investigated by staining C. quadricarinatus with calcein and examining their ossicles a year later. Pterocardiac ossicles were superior to other ageing structures (i.e. other ossicles and eyestalks) and produced repeatable between-reader counts (87% were corroborated and 13% varied by ±1). C. quadricarinatus size-at-age data (for an aquaculture population) was described by a von Bertalanffy growth equation (L = 32 mm occipital carapace length; K = 0.64; t 0 = –0.18; R2 = 0.81). Ossicular growth marks did not correspond to moult history. The calcein stain was retained over an annual cycle comprising multiple moults, demonstrating that pterocardiac ossicles retain chronological information. The maximum age (3+) corroborated other indirectly-obtained longevity estimates for C. quadricarinatus. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that the growth marks in C. quadricarinatus ossicles are probably deposited annually during winter. The ability to extract age information from subtropical decapods provides substantial opportunities for advancing fisheries and conservation research globally, but further research is needed to provide a definitive validation and elucidate the mechanism governing the accrual of ossicular growth marks.  相似文献
