Foraging behavior of bumblebees has been in the past analyzedfrom two major perspectives. On the one hand, behavioral mechanismshave been studied to learn more about the animal. On the otherextreme, the animal has been used incidentally to examine optimalforaging theory (O.F.T.). Major problems have arisen when theorydesigned to answer evolutionary questions was used to determineproximal mechanisms. While O.F.T. could be highly useful inmaking predictions to point out useful problems, the bottleneckto our understanding at the present resides in the lack of experimentsthat test alternative hypotheses. Whether or not a bumblebee worker's foraging behavior is adaptive(enhances fitness), however, or is optimal (maximizes fitness)cannot yet be resolved by observations or experimentation onindividual bees. However, calculations can show the potentialenergy costs and payoffs of alternative potential foraging behaviors.Rapid progress could be made by examining the mechanisms offoraging behavior that act to enhance foraging returns, withoutworrying about whether or not the behavior is "optimal."  相似文献

Evolutionary biologists have grappled with the question of the emergenceand maintenance of cooperation since Darwin first listed animal cooperation asapotential problem for his theory of natural selection. Here I review four pathsthat have been delineated in the study of intra-specific cooperation amonganimals. These paths – kinship, reciprocity, byproduct mutualism andgroupselection – serve as a starting point for behavioral ecologistsinterestedstudying the initiation and maintenance of cooperation. After reviewing theempirical and theoretical underpinnings of these paths to cooperation, I touchupon some recent work that has attempted to examine (or reexamine) the role ofphylogeny, punishment and morality in the light of cooperative behavior.  相似文献

Sexual selection on multiple signals may lead to differential rates of signal introgression across hybrid zones if some signals contribute to reproductive isolation but others facilitate gene flow. Competition among males is one powerful form of sexual selection, but male behavioral responses to multiple traits have not been considered in a system where traits have introgressed differentially. Using playbacks, mounts, and a reciprocal experimental design, we tested the hypothesis that male responses to song and plumage in two subspecies of red‐backed fairy‐wren (Malurus melanocephalus) explain patterns of differential signal introgression (song has not introgressed, whereas plumage color has introgressed asymmetrically). We found that males of both subspecies discriminated symmetrically between subspecies’ songs at a long range, but at a close range, we found that aggression was equal for both subspecies’ plumage and songs. Taken together, our results suggest that male behavioral responses hinder the introgression of song, but allow for the observed asymmetrical introgression of plumage. Our results highlight how behavioral responses are a key component of signal evolution when recently divergent taxa come together, and how differential responses to multiple signals may lead to differential signal introgression and novel trait combinations.  相似文献

Animal behavior is unique in influencing both components of the process of transmission of disease: exposure to infectious agents, and susceptibility to infection once exposed. To date, the influence of behavior on exposure versus susceptibility has largely been considered separately. Here, we ask whether these two key mechanisms act in concert in natural populations, whereby individuals who are most exposed to infectious agents or have the most contact with conspecifics are also the most susceptible or infectious. We propose three mechanisms that can generate covariation between these two key elements of the transmission of disease within and among hosts, and we provide empirical examples of each. We then use a mathematical model to examine the effect of this covariation on the dynamics of disease at the population level. First, we show that the empirical mechanisms generating covariation between behavioral and physiological components of disease transmission are widespread and include endocrine mediators of behavior, mate choice, group size, sickness behaviors, and behavioral avoidance of infectious conspecifics. The diversity of these empirical mechanisms underscores the potential importance and breadth of covariation in the disease process. Second, we show mathematically that the variability in hosts' exposure to infectious agents and susceptibility or infectiousness, and how tightly they are coupled, strongly influences the ability of a disease to invade a host population. Overall, we propose that covariation between behavioral and physiological components of transmission is likely widespread in natural populations, and can have important consequences for the dynamics of disease at the population level as well as for our understanding of sexual selection, social behavior, and animal communication.  相似文献

Social selection is presented here as a parallel theory to sexual selection and is defined as a selective force that occurs when individuals change their own social behaviors, responding to signals sent by conspecifics in a way to influence the other individuals' fitness. I analyze the joint evolution of a social signal and behavioral responsiveness to the signal by a quantitative-genetic model. The equilibria of average phenotypes maintained by a balance of social selection and natural selection and their stability are examined for two alternative assumptions on behavioral responsiveness, neutral and adaptive. When behavioral responsiveness is neutral on fitness, a rapid evolution by runaway selection occurs only with enough genetic covariance between the signal and responsiveness. The condition for rapid evolution also depends on natural selection and the number of interacting individuals. When signals convey some information on signalers (e.g., fighting ability), behavioral responsiveness is adaptive such that a receiver's fitness is also influenced by the signal. Here there is a single point of equilibrium. The equilibrium point and its stability do not depend on the genetic correlation. The condition needed for evolution is that the signal is beneficial for receivers, which results from reliability of the signal. Frequency-dependent selection on responsiveness has almost no influence on the equilibrium and the rate of evolution.  相似文献

Recent developments in landscape-level ecological modeling rest upon poorly understood behavioral phenomena. Surprisingly, these phenomena include animal movement and habitat selection, two areas with a long history of study in behavioral ecology. A major problem in applying traditional behavioral ecology to landscape-level ecological problems is that ecologists and behaviorists work at very different spatial scales. Thus a behavioral ecology of ecological landscapes would strive to overcome this inopportune differential in spatial scales. Such a landscape-conscious behavioral undertaking would not only establish more firmly the link between behavior and ecological systems, but also catalyze the study of basic biological phenomena of Interest to behaviorists and ecologists alike.  相似文献

Recent authors have contrasted the ‘traditional ethological approach’ to the study of animal signals with that derived from games theory. It is argued here that the ‘traditonal ethological approach’ they portray is not in keeping with main stream of ethological research on animal signals. In particular, it has not been generally assumed that the evolution of animal signals was based on selection for mutual benefit of actor and reactor, nor that signals carry precise information of what the actor will do next. A synthesis of the ethological and games-theory approaches is possible. It is suggested that many threat displays may signal ‘Will stay, but attack if provoked’ or ‘Will stay, but will flee if provoked’, and that the subsequent behaviour of the displaying bird depends in part on that of the reactor.  相似文献

Animal signals are complex, comprising multiple components that receivers may use to inform their decisions. Components may carry information of differing value to receivers, and selection on one component could modulate or reverse selection on another, necessitating a multivariate approach to estimating selection gradients. However, surprisingly few empirical studies have estimated the strength of phenotypic selection on complex signals with appropriate design and adequate power to detect nonlinear selection. We used phonotaxis assays to measure sexual selection on the advertisement signal of Cope's gray tree frog, Hyla chrysoscelis. Female preferences were assessed for five signal components using single‐ and two‐stimulus behavioral assays. Linear, quadratic, and correlational selection gradients were estimated from the single‐stimulus data. Significant directional selection is acting on call duration, call rate, pulse rate, and relative amplitude; stabilizing selection is acting on call duration and call rate. Under the two‐stimulus paradigm, conclusions were qualitatively different, revealing nonlinear selection on all components except call duration. For individual subjects, the outcomes of single‐ and two‐stimulus trials were frequently discordant, suggesting that the choice of testing paradigm may affect conclusions drawn from experiments.  相似文献

Female preference for complex/novel signals in a spider   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Identifying the various factors that influence complex signalevolution is a difficult task, yet it is fundamental to understandingthe evolution of animal communication. Here we explore the evolutionof complex courtship signaling by taking advantage of a systemin which sexual selection on male courtship traits has driventhe diversification of geographically isolated populations ofthe jumping spider Habronattus pugillis Griswold. Using 2 populations(Santa Rita [SR] and Atascosa [AT]) in which SR females showxenophilic mating preferences for foreign (AT) over local males(SR), we examine the mechanisms driving this preference. BothAT and SR males produce multimodal signals (visual + seismic),and while SR and AT signals share certain seismic components,AT seismic signals are more complex and contain novel components. We conducted mate choice trials where SR females were presentedwith AT or SR males that were either muted or nonmuted. SR femalespreferred to mate and mated more quickly with foreign AT malesover local SR males only if AT males could produce seismic signals(nonmuted treatment). In addition, we found that SR femalesspent a higher proportion of time attentive to foreign AT malesonly if they could produce seismic signals. This evidence suggeststhat SR females have a bias for complex and/or novel forms ofseismic signals.  相似文献

Sexual selection has often been invoked in explaining extravagant morphological and behavioural adaptations that function to increase mating success. Much is known about the effects of intersexual selection, which operates through female mate choice, in shaping animal signals. The role of intrasexual selection has been less clear. We report on the first evidence for the coevolution of signal complexity and sexual size dimorphism (SSD), which is characteristically produced by high levels of male male competition. We used two complementary comparative methods in order to reveal that the use of complex signals is associated with SSD in extant species and that historical increases in complexity have occurred in regions of a phylogenetic tree characterized by high levels of pre-existing size dimorphism. We suggest that signal complexity has evolved in order to improve opponent assessment under conditions of high male male competition. Our findings suggest that intrasexual selection may play an important and previously underestimated role in the evolution of communicative systems.  相似文献

Elaborate visual communication signals characterize many animal lineages. Often sex‐limited, these signals are generally assumed to result from sexual selection, and in many cases, their evolution is thought to play a central role in speciation. The co‐evolution of male visual signals and female preferences is hypothesized to result in behavioral isolation between divergent lineages; however, for many lineages characterized by elaborate visual signals, the importance of visual differences in behavioral isolation is not well established. Darters (fish genus Etheostoma) are particularly appropriate for examining the role of visual signals in behavioral isolation. They comprise one of the most diverse groups of North American freshwater fish, and nearly every species is characterized by unique nuptial coloration. Multiple darter species co‐exist in sympatric populations, indicating that reproductive barriers are central to maintaining these extraordinarily diverse color patterns. This study demonstrates the presence of behavioral isolation between a pair of distinctly colored sympatric darter species, Etheostoma barrenense and Etheostoma zonale, through experimental observations using an artificial stream. In addition, a series of dichotomous mate‐choice trials indicate that females prefer conspecific males over heterospecifics based on visual differences alone. We therefore provide the first evidence that visual signals are a critical trait maintaining behavioral isolation in darters, a lineage of fishes with spectacular diversification in visual communication.  相似文献

A structural stability approach to population-genetic systems and to dynamic evolutionary games is attempted in order to examine the theoretical significance of sociobiological selection models. A criterion of weak selection is derived that is not restricted to differential reproduction in polymorphic systems but describes possible directions of evolutionary change in time scales governed by genetic mutation rates. The criterion applies to the problems of how the initial mutational basis of an adaptive trait may be established and how this may happen, for analogous traits, independently in different species. Two basic sociobiological concepts are reconsidered with reference to the criterion. It is shown that W. D. Hamilton's condition of increases in inclusive fitness due to altruistic interactions among kin expresses the structural instability of populations against the evolution of altruistic behavior. Using the dynamic approach to evolutionary game theory, it is demonstrated that if a behavioral phenotype is an evolutionarily stable strategy, it is structurally stable against perturbations of the fitness payoffs, provided selection is weak. These results are applied to material problems of the evolution of animal social behavior.  相似文献

Researchers have used sexual selection theory and hypotheses based on intersexual mate choice and intrasexual mate competition to explain the role of spontaneous long-distance vocalizations emitted by adult male primates, relying on the tacit assumption that assessment or identity cues are encoded in the vocalizations. I review the published literature and aim to substantiate a relationship between sexual selection and long-distance vocal communication in primates. First, I review findings from nonprimate taxa to determine the relative importance of inter- and intrasexual selection and to provide a background for examining primates. Next, I describe several hypotheses for signal content and function in adult male loud calls. Then, I examine the available data across Primates for evidence to support or to refute these hypotheses and to determine if they meet proposed criteria for demonstrating sexual selection [Snowdon, C. T. (2004). Sexual Selection in Primates: New and Comparative Perspectives]. Signal content refers to patterns of acoustic features within vocalizations from which listeners might extract cues or information about the signaler. I interpret signal function, in turn, from behavioral responses of receivers and assume it has ultimate effects on the evolution and design of acoustic signals if direct fitness consequences exist. After the general review across primates, I propose orangutans as a candidate species for further evaluation of sexual selection in vocal communication. The available evidence corroborates a demonstrable relationship between sexual selection and adult male loud calls based on individual recognition, but it is necessary to obtain additional data to affirm a direct benefit to reproductive success.  相似文献

The intake of food has physiological consequences via physical (e.g. distension) and chemical (e.g. glucose) stimulation of receptors in the viscera and, in the longer term, by changes in signals from adipose tissue (e.g. leptin), integrated by the CNS. These consequences are associated with the sensory properties of the food such that repeated exposure to a food generates a conditioned acceptance or rejection reflex with the physiological consequences of eating as the unconditioned stimulus (US) and the sensory characteristics of the food as the conditioned stimulus (CS). Such learnt preferences and aversions occur throughout the animal kingdom, from nematodes to human beings, with much of the research being carried out with insects, laboratory animals and farm animals. Preferences for and aversions to particular foods are manifested in non-random choices between two or more foods on offer but also influence the quantity eaten when only one food is available. These considerations have been developed into a theory of Minimal Total Discomfort which proposes that an animal experiments with the amount eaten per day, and its selection between different foods, until the total of the signals generated from excesses or deficiencies of food components is minimised. Changes in food composition and/or nutrient requirements can therefore be matched by appropriate changes in intake and selection.  相似文献

Identifying targets of selection is key to understanding the evolution of sexually selected behavioral and morphological traits. Many animals have coercive mating, yet little is known about whether and how mate choice operates when these are the dominant mating tactic. Here, we use multivariate selection analysis to examine the direction and shape of selection on male insemination success in the mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). We found direct selection on only one of five measured traits, but correlational selection involving all five traits. Larger males with longer gonopodia and with intermediate sperm counts were more likely to inseminate females than smaller males with shorter gonopodia and extreme sperm counts. Our results highlight the need to investigate sexual selection using a multivariate framework even in species that lack complex sexual signals. Further, female choice appears to be important in driving the evolution of male sexual traits in this species where sexual coercion is the dominant mating tactic.  相似文献

Understanding the origin and maintenance of barriers to gene exchange is a central goal of speciation research. Hawaiian swordtail crickets (genus Laupala) represent one of the most rapidly speciating animal groups yet identified. Extensive acoustic diversity, strong premating isolation, and female preference for conspecific acoustic signals in laboratory phonotaxis trials have strongly supported divergence in mate recognition as the driving force behind the explosive speciation seen in this system. However, recent work has shown that female preference for conspecific male calling song does not extend to mate choice at close range among these crickets, leading to the hypothesis that additional sexual signals are involved in mate recognition and premating isolation. Here we examine patterns of variation in cuticular lipids among several species of Laupala from Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Results demonstrate (1) a rapid and dramatic evolution of cuticular lipid composition among species in this genus, (2) significant differences among males and females in cuticular lipid composition, and (3) a significant reduction in the complexity of cuticular lipid profiles in species from the Big Island of Hawaii as compared to two outgroup species from Maui. These results suggest that behavioral barriers to gene exchange in Laupala may be composed of multiple mate recognition signals, a pattern common in other cricket species.  相似文献

Results from the operant laboratory suggest that short-termbenefits guide animal feeding decisions. These results appearto contradict evolutionarily-motivated models of foraging thatemphasize long-term benefits. Because of this contradiction, some behavioral ecologists argue that natural selection mustfavor short-term benefits in some unknown way. This study addressesthe contradiction by testing the feeding preferences of captiveblue jays in two economically equivalent situations. The firstsituation follows the operant literature's "self-control" paradigm;jays make a binary choice between small-immediate and large-delayedoptions. The second situation is modeled on patch-use problems;the jays make a leave-stay decision in which "leaving" leadsto small amount in a short time, and "staying" leads to largeramount in a longer time. In the self-control situations, theobserved outcome agrees with short-term rate maximizing, asother investigators have reported. In the patch situation, the results agree more closely with long-term rate maximizing. Thetext explains how a rule of preference based on short-termrate comparisons can account for both situations. It is arguedthat natural selection may have favored short-term rules becausethey have long-term consequences in many natural foraging situations.  相似文献
