Factor VIII coagulation activity (VIII:C) and factor VIII associated antigen (VIII:AGN) were determined in healthy newborns and in children with charging perinatal factors ("risk children"). VIII:C values of healthy newborns may be compared with those of grown-ups with normal coagulation. Risk children have somewhat higher values than newborns, the difference, however, being statistically not significant. The concentration of VIII:AGN is clearly increased in both groups on the first day of life. Moreover, VIII:AGN is being eliminated more slowly in risk children. The increased VIII:AGN concentrations are considered as a sequel of stress conditions caused by birth, whereas the discrepancy between VIII:C and VIII:AGN is due to a thrombin effect.  相似文献

Since we could find no scientific basis for the 10 well-baby visits recommended in the first 2 years of life in Ontario, we carried out a randomized trial in 570 healthy, low-risk newborns to determine the efficacy and safety of decreasing the number of scheduled well-baby visits from 10 to 5. Among the 466 babies still in the trial at the end of the study period those in the 10-visit group had had a mean of 7.63 scheduled and 0.26 unscheduled well-baby visits and those in the 5-visit group a mean of 4.77 scheduled and 1.42 unscheduled well-baby visits. Reducing the recommended number of visits did not result in an increased incidence of illness or an increased prevalence of undetected abnormality, and the physical development of the babies in the two groups was almost identical. The mean scores of the two groups in assessments of mental development, maternal-child relations, maternal anxiety and parental satisfaction with health care were close. The results suggest that the recommended number of well-baby visits for healthy, low-risk newborns can be reduced to five for children of multiparas and six for children of primiparas. Any additional well-baby visits should be scheduled according to the needs and experience of the parents.  相似文献

Although the assumption has long been made that the Ciliophora arose from flagellates, limited progress has been made in determining exactly what extant group - flagellate or other - may best resemble the ancestral "preciliate" assemblage. The distinctiveness of the ciliates and of the many protist phyla containing flagellated stages in their life cycles makes the recognition of potentially homologous features difficult. The suggestion that there may be a phylogenetic relationship between dinoflagellates and ciliates, while seeming unlikely from consideration of a number of specialized characters, is attracting increased attention. This is because some basic similarities (possibly shared derived characters) are characteristic of many species from both groups: cortical alveoli, tubular mitochondrial cristae, kinetidal systems, acentric mitoses with persisting nuclear envelope, functional cytostome, extrusomes (mucocytsts and explosive trichocysts), locomotory organelles, and small subunit rRNAs (close structural similarity values). But many questions remain unanalyzed or unanswered, and caution is still advisable in drawing any firm conclusions about the evolutionary closeness of ciliates and dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Background

Automated interleukin assays are promising diagnostic aids for early-onset neonatal sepsis, however, reference values for healthy term neonates are incompletely known. The goal of this study is to determine reference values for interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) in cord blood of healthy term neonates.

Methods and Findings

Women were recruited from April 2012 to August 2012. IL-6 and IL-8 levels were measured using an automated immunometric assay (Immulite) in cord blood of 93 healthy term newborns, 60 of them were born via vaginal delivery and 33 by elective caesarean section (ECS). A mean value for IL-8 of 8.1±3.0 pg/mL was found in cord blood of healthy term neonates, which apply to both vaginal delivery and ECS. Regarding IL-6, two values apply. For vaginal delivery, a median value of 3.3 pg/mL (range, <2 to 9.53 pg/mL) was found, while for ECS, a median value of <2 pg/mL (range, <2 to 48 pg/mL) applies.

Conclusions

We propose a reference value of <14.1 pg/mL for IL-8 (mean + 2SD), applying to vaginally delivered and ECS-delivered healthy term newborns. From a clinical point of view, we also propose one reference value for IL-6 to be applied to vaginally delivered and ECS-delivered healthy term newborns, which is <10.2 pg/mL (97.5th percentile total group). These values have to be validated in larger cohorts of neonates, inclusive of those with and without early-onset neonatal sepsis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess birth weight of healthy newborns from the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County, Croatia. Birth weights of healthy newborns, born at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospital Center "Zagreb" in the year 2001, were included into analysis. Since there were only few newborns in the 22nd-27th week of gestation, they were excluded from the study. Small number of data points was also noticed in 28th-36th week of gestation, and was supplemented with the data from the years 2000, 2002 and 2003. The method of analysis used in this study was described by Altman and Chitty (Br. J. Obstet. Gynaecol., 101 (1994) 29). After the application of well defined exclusion criteria, the final sample consisted of 4252 newborns. Percentile values for the four groups of newborns (male gender-primipara, male gender-multipara, female gender-primipara, female gender-multipara) were defined, yielding highest birth weight values in the male gender-multipara group (50th percentile of 40th gestational week was 3551.3 g), while female gender-primipara newborns were the lightest among the four sub-samples studied (50th percentile of 40th gestational week was 3399.9 g). New percentile values for percentile curves plotting are presented here and recommended for use in the clinical practice.  相似文献

Background

To determine the mean values for central corneal thickness (CCT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) and the relationship between these values, in healthy Malay children to serve as reference values in diagnosis and treatment.

Design

A cross-sectional study.

Methodology/Principal Findings

One hundred and eight eyes (54 subjects) of Malay children without diagnosis of ocular abnormality or disease meeting our inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. The CCT and IOP were measured by specular microscopy and non-contact air-puff tonometry respectively, for analysis and comparison with the values obtained in previous studies. Mean CCT and IOP was found to be 530.87±30.79 µm and 15.65±3.05 mm Hg respectively. CCT was found not to vary with age. A positive relationship was found between CCT and IOP; specifically, with every 100-µm increase in CCT, IOP increased by 3.5 mm Hg.

Conclusions/Significance

CCT and IOP are strongly related in healthy Malay children aged 8 to 16. The mean CCT of Malay children is lower than that of majority children of other ethnic groups, supporting the existence of CCT variation among different populations and that ethnicity should be a key consideration when applying CCT data to the general pediatric population.  相似文献

A new method of species (inverse) classification of vegetation data, i.e. classification of species into groups with similar ecological tolerances, is presented which overcomes the problems of species abundance distorting the results. The algorithm TWO-STEP is based on the use of an asymmetric measure of dissimilarity: where i, j are species, h is the stand, n is the total number of stands, and xih is the amount of species i in stand h. The algorithm uses the rows of the asymmetric dissimilarity matrix generated as above to form a second symmetric dissimilarity matrix using the measure: where m is the number of species and k the species. Flexible sorting is applied to generate a species classification. Comparison of results after applying the TWO-STEP algorithm and a standard alternative to an artificial data set demonstrates its efficacy. TWO-STEP also shows considerable advantages over previous analyses for a Queensland rainforest data set (quantitative) and an English heath (qualitative) data set. Normalization of species data appears advantageous for quantitative data only.  相似文献

Aim

To investigate longevity-associated genes based on a comparison between dead and surviving populations.

Methods

A total of 71 cases of dead individuals were treated as the death group, and healthy volunteers who were matched with the dead individuals based on sex and age were recruited as the survival group. Alleles of 13 CODIS STR loci were determined using the AmpFLSTR Profiler Plus PCR Amplification Kit. The cross-validation was performed based on differences between the two groups in both frequency values and ages.

Results

The frequency value of the D18S51-17 alleles was significantly higher in the dead group than in the survival group (p < 0.05), and the frequency value of the D2S1338-18 allele was statistically lower in the dead group than in the survival group (p < 0.05). The mean age of the subjects with the D2S1338-18 allele was also significantly higher than that of the subjects without D2S1338-18, and no significant difference was observed with respect to the other three alleles.

Conclusions

The results suggest that D2S1338-18 is associated with longevity.  相似文献

Under brief consideration is the problem of primary or secondary status of the judgments about taxa relative to the judgments about characters in the biological classifications. The following formal definition of taxonomic system (classification) TS is provided: TS = BT[T, C(t), R(t), R(c), R(tc)], where BT is a biological theory constituting content-wise background of the system, T is a set of taxa, C(t) is a set of taxonomic characters, R(t) is a set of relationships among taxa (similarity, kinship, etc.), R(c) is a set of relationships among characters (homology, etc.), and R(tc) is a set of correspondences among taxa and characters. The latter correspondences may be complete or incomplete. At ontological level, there two basical traditions exist in biological systematics regarding R(tc) according to which the biological diversity is patterned either as a set of groups of organisms (taxa) or as a set of their properties (characters). In the first case, taxon is "primary" relative to character (in cladistics); in its opposite, character is "primary" relative to taxon (in scholasticism, classical typology, classical phylogenetics). At epistemological level, incompleteness of the taxon-character correspondence makes classificatory procedure iterative and taxonomic diagnoses context-dependent. The interative nature of classificatory procedure makes the "primary" or "secondary" status of both taxa and characters relative and alternating. This makes it necessary to introduces a kind of uncertainty relation in biological systematics which means impossibility of simultaneous definition of both extensional and intentional parameters of the taxonomic system at each step of classificatory iterations.  相似文献

The basal and calmodulin-stimulated activity of the human erythrocyte Ca2(+)-ATPase was determined in 56 healthy individuals of different ages in order to set control values. The basal activity of all 56 healthy subjects was 0.805 +/- 0.525 mumole hydrolyzed ATP/mg protein/hr, while the calmodulin-stimulated activity gave an average of 2.437 +/- 0.785 mumole hydrolyzed ATP/mg protein/hr. There was no significant difference in basal Ca2(+)-ATPase activity in males and females; however, significantly increased levels of the stimulated red cell calcium pump was seen in females. Based on age, the basal activity for newborns and children up the age of 7 years was higher than that for adults and a distinct increase in activation by calmodulin was observed with a maximum at the age range of 8-13 years. It was demonstrated that for the investigation of Ca2(+)-ATPase activities in children different normal values must be taken into consideration than for those already reported for adults. Our data may serve as controls for Ca2(+)-ATPase activities for comparison purposes and for further studies from different diseases in childhood where increased intraerythrocytic calcium levels are reported.  相似文献

The study was aimed at investigating the changes in the blood serum concentrations of growth hormone (HGH), insulin and placental lactogen (HPL) in the newborns of diabetic mothers as compared to those born from physiological pregnancies. The concentration of hormones was determined by RIA both in the newborns and in mothers of the two groups. The mean insulin concentration was significantly higher, and that of HGH significantly lower in the newborns of diabetic mothers, as compared to those of healthy mothers. It seems that the occurrence of fetal macrosomy in diabetic pregnancies is associated with high insulin levels.  相似文献

Human mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plays an important role in innate immunity. MBL deficiency is associated with mutations in the promoter region and in exon 1 of the MBL2 gene. Such deficiency has been correlated with elevated incidence of infections in infancy and in immunocompromised adults. We determined the distribution profile of the MBL2 gene variants in the general population of Benin (West Africa) and in a vulnerable subset of children with sickle cell disease (SCD) (SS homozygotes). Five hundred forty-two healthy individuals (274 newborns, 268 adults) and 128 patients with SCD (35 newborns, 93 children) were screened for the common variant alleles in the MBL2 secretor haplotype region (exon 1 and promoter). The p.G57E variant allele was the most frequent allele compared to p.G54D (27.5% vs. 1.6%, respectively). The p.R52C allele was not found in this population. There was no difference in allele or genotype frequencies between healthy newborns and newborns with SCD. Alleles associated with MBL deficiency were more frequent in adults than in newborns (69.8% vs. 57.3%, respectively; p = 0.002). This enrichment was exclusively due to an elevated proportion of heterozygotes for the p.G57E allele (47.0% vs. 35.3%, respectively; p = 0.004), supporting a potential selective advantage of this genotype. Our results, compared to those reported in other African countries, support the implication of the MBL2 gene in various major infections in Africa, such as meningitis and tuberculosis in HIV-positive patients.  相似文献

Baseline frequencies of sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) were measured in lymphocytes of 142 healthy Koreans ranging in age from newborn infants to the fifties. The overall mean frequency of SCE was 8.78 +/- 0.24/cell. However, highly significant differences were found between individuals. The mean SCE values of the newborn babies and small children less than 10 years old were significantly lower than those of other age groups. No age effect was, however, observed in adolescent and adult subjects. Females had statistically higher SCE levels than males. The mean SCE frequencies of smokers, measured in male subjects more than 10 years old, were slightly, but statistically significantly, higher than those of non-smokers.  相似文献

Plasma selenium reference values from healthy donors in the metropolitan area of Barcelona are determined. A random sample from 156 healthy adults (control group) is analysed by using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman effect background correction.

The relationship between several pathologies and Se content is also evaluated. Se content from 64 samples from subjects with chronic renal failure and 54 from subjects suffering from several malignancies are determined and the results are compared to the reference values. Moreover, Se contents are determined and compared in two groups of children, healthy (19 samples) and children of mothers infected with HIV-1 (16 samples).

In the control group, Se plasma concentration ranges between 50 and 145 μg · L−1 (82.2 ± 17.5 μg · L−1). Significantly lower values are found in the two pathologies studied (malignancy and chronic renal failure), compared to the control group. However, no significant differences in Se content are found between the two groups studied regarding malignancy and chronic renal failure.

In children of mothers infected with HIV-1, Se status is significantly lower than that of healthy children.  相似文献

The relationship between mother's heterozygosity as revealed by 14 polymorphic loci and variation of the set of anthropometric traits were studied in normal singleton newborns (174 boys, 127 girls). Statistically significant negative correlation between mother's heterozygosity and the index of fluctuating asymmetry was found in girls. Variances of four traits--body weight, body length, circumference of head and breast measured by first principal component, and mean number of minor deviations from development (stigma) are shown to be minimal in the children born by mothers with the average level of heterozygosity. The groups of newborns with different level of mother's heterozygosity are characterized by different combinations of first principal component, stigma, and the index of fluctuating asymmetry. It is concluded from the whole set of data that children born by mothers with the average level of heterozygosity have the highest level of viability.  相似文献

Immune reactions elicited in the sera of individuals exposed to nickel and cobalt were assessed by changes in the concentration of serum immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM and serum proteins alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M), transferrin (TRF), alpha 1-antitrypsin (A1AT), ceruloplasmin (CPL) and lysozyme (LYS). Examinations were carried out in workers occupationally exposed to Ni (38 individuals) or Co (35 individuals) and in groups of non-occupationally exposed children living in areas with a different degree of air pollution from a nearby source of Ni and Co emissions (one group was made up of 54 exposed children, the other one of 64 "less exposed" children of the same age). Groups of non-exposed controls were represented by a group of 42 male adults matched by age and by a group of 48 children from a non-polluted area. Significantly increased average values were obtained for IgG, IgA and IgM in group of workers exposed to Ni, for IgA in workers exposed to Co and for A1AT, A2M, CPL and LYS in both groups of occupationally exposed adults (p less than 0.001 - p less than 0.005). Among non-occupationally exposed children the group of the most exposed had significantly elevated average values for A2M and A1AT which were higher than those recorded in groups of "less exposed" and control children (p less than 0.02 and p less than 0.05, respectively). The rate of growth in height and the timing of adolescent growth events are analyzed for two samples of Guatemalan children. One sample includes Mayan school children, 33 boys and 12 girls between the ages of 5.00 to 17.99 years, living under poor conditions for growth and development. The second sample includes ladino children, 78 boys and 85 girls of the same age range, living under favorable conditions for growth. The Preece-Baines model I function is used to estimate mean values for rates and timing of childhood and adolescent growth events for the two groups. Significant statistical contrasts (t-tests) of these means show Mayan boys reach the age of "take-off" (TO; the onset of the adolescent growth spurt) 1.45 years later, achieve peak height velocity (PHV) 1.68 years later, and continue growing for about 2.0 years longer than do the ladino boys. Despite the Mayan boys' increased duration for growth they grow significantly more slowly than the ladinos. Mayan boys are 6.60 cm shorter than ladinos at the age of TO and are estimated to be 7.71 cm shorter than the ladinos at adulthood. Mayan girls reach the age of TO 0.93 years later than do the ladina girls, but the two groups do not differ in the age at PHV or the age at adulthood. The mean height of Mayan girls is significantly less than that of ladinas at the age of TO (6.5 cm), and this difference increases to an estimated 11.14 cm at adulthood. Possible causes of these ethnic and sex-related differences in amounts and rates of growth are discussed in relation to hypotheses about the genetic and environmental determinants of human development.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was calculated for nine paired morphometric characters in a randombred population of house mice in order to assess the effects of age, sex, and phenotypical extremeness. FA did not significantly vary between sexes for any of the characters, and age proved to be significant only for innominate length. Additionally, FA values in high extreme individuals and low extreme individuals were compared to those for intermediate individuals to discover whether extreme individuals showed increased fluctuating asymmetry (decreased developmental stability) due to increased levels of homozygosity. Differences in fluctuating asymmetry magnitudes were found between the groups, although the extreme individuals did not consistently show increased fluctuating asymmetry and FA differences also showed no significant association with the level of heritability of each character. Potential reasons for these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Amongst the most threatened ecosystems on Earth, mangrove forests are also one of the more difficult to work in due to their growth in mud and open water coastal zones and their dense tangled stems, branches and prop roots. Consequently, there has been an impetus to employ remotely sensed imagery as a means for rapid inventory of these coastal wetlands. To date, the majority of mangrove maps derived from satellite imagery utilize a simple mangrove classification scheme which does not distinguish mangrove species and may not be useful for conservation and management purposes. Although more elaborate satellite based mangrove classification schemes are being developed, given their enhanced complexity they deserve additional justification for end users. The purpose of this study was to statistically examine the appropriateness of one such classification scheme based on an inventory of field data. In January of 2007 and May of 2008, 61 field sample plots were selected in a stratified random fashion based on a previous classification of a degraded mangrove forest of the Isla La Palma (Sinaloa, Mexico) using Landsat TM5 data. Unlike other previous Landsat TM based classifications of this region, which simply identified the mangrove forests as one class, the mangroves were classified (i.e. mapped) according to four conditions; healthy tall, healthy dwarf, poor condition, and dead mangroves. Within each sample plot, all mangroves of diameter of breast height (dbh) greater than 2.5 cm were identified and their height, condition and dbh recorded. An estimated Leaf Area Index (LAI) value also was obtained for each sample and the shortest distance from the center of each sample plot to open flowing water was determined using a geographic information system (GIS) overlay procedure. These data were then used to calculate mean values for the four classes as well as to determine stem densities, basal areas, and the Shannon–Wiener diversity index. In order to assess the appropriateness of this mangrove classification scheme a discriminant analysis approach was then applied to these field data. The results indicate this forest has undergone severe degradation, with decreasing mean tree heights, mean dbh and species diversity. In regards to the discriminant analysis procedure, further classification of these field plots and cross-validation based on these significant variables provided high classification accuracy thus validating the appropriateness of the satellite based image classification scheme. Moreover, the discriminant analysis indicated that the estimated LAI, mean height, and mean dbh are significant in the separation of the classification of mangrove forest condition along these field sample plots.  相似文献
