The general aim has been to illuminate the psychological mechanisms involved in outdoor place and weather assessment. This reasoning was conceptualized in a model, tentatively proposing direct and indirect links of influence in an outdoor place–human relationship. The model was subsequently tested by an empirical study, performed in a Nordic city, on the impact of weather and personal factors on participants’ perceptual and emotional estimations of outdoor urban places. In line with our predictions, we report significant influences of weather parameters (air temperature, wind, and cloudlessness) and personal factors (environmental attitude and age) on participants’ perceptual and emotional estimations of outdoor urban places. All this is a modest, yet significant, step towards an understanding of the psychology of outdoor place and weather assessment.  相似文献

Consideration of urban microclimate and thermal comfort is an absolute neccessity in urban development, and a set of guidelines for every type of climate must be elaborated. However, to develop guidelines, thermal comfort ranges need to be defined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of different thermal indices by investigating different thermal environments in Damascus during summer and winter. A second aim was to define the lower and upper limits of the thermal comfort range for some of these indices. The study was based on comprehensive micrometeorological measurements combined with questionnaires. It was found that the thermal conditions of different outdoor environments vary considerably. In general, Old Damascus, with its deep canyons, is more comfortable in summer than modern Damascus where there is a lack of shade. Conversely, residential areas and parks in modern Damascus are more comfortable in winter due to more solar access. The neutral temperatures of both the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET) and the outdoor standard effective temperature (OUT_SET*) were found to be lower in summer than in winter. At 80 % acceptability, the study defined the lower comfort limit in winter to 21.0 °C and the upper limit in summer to 31.3 °C for PET. For OUT_SET*, the corresponding lower and upper limits were 27.6 °C and 31.3 °C respectively. OUT_SET* showed a better correlation with the thermal sensation votes than PET. The study also highlighted the influence of culture and traditions on people’s clothing as well as the influence of air conditioning on physical adaptation.  相似文献

In order to measure the effect on the attention of teenagers of thermal discomfort due to high temperature and humidity, two experiments were conducted in two different indoor conditions of temperature and humidity in non-air-conditioned classrooms. The participants were a heterogeneous group of 117 teenagers, aged 12 to 18 years, and the experiments reproduced the actual conditions of teaching in a classroom in the Mediterranean climate. In order to measure the attention index, a standard Toulouse-Pieron psychological test was performed on the 117 teenagers in these two conditions, and the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV), the physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET), the Standard effective Temperature (SET*) and the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) indices were calculated to estimate the grade of discomfort using the RayMan Pro model. Conditions of greater discomfort decreased the attention index in the whole group, especially in those aged 12–14, among whom the attention index dropped by around 45 % when compared to comfortable conditions. However, teenage attention at ages 17 and 18 shows little variation in discomfort in respect to thermally comfortable conditions. In addition, the attention index for boys and girls shows the same variation in discomfort conditions. However, girls have a slightly higher attention index than boys in discomfort and thermal comfort experiments.  相似文献

1. 1. The authors propose humidity reduction instead of lowering room temperature in order to reduce cooling syndrome.

2. 2. They conducted experiments with subjects in the rooms, one with controlling humidity to about 40% r.h. and another without humidity control. Air-conditioning system with humidity control has a greater promise in making a comfortable environment, even at the temperature as high as 30°C, in comparison with conventional means using temperature control alone.

3. 3. Relationship of actual mean votes on temperature sensation and comfort sensation with PMV and SET, respectively, suggests that Japanese people might be more sensitive to humidity than Westerners and so different methods from those used in the western countries should be required for human thermal environmental studies with respect to the hot humid summer in Japan.

To alleviate worker's thermal discomfort in a moderately hot environment, a new cooling vest was designed and proposed in this paper. To investigate the effect of the cooling vest and to collect the knowledge for the design of comfortable cooling vest, subjective experiments were conducted. Two kinds of cooling vests, the new one and the commercially available one, were used for comparison. The new cooling vest had more insulation and its surface temperature was higher than the commercially available one. Experiments were performed in the climatic chamber where operative temperature was controlled at 30.2 degrees C and relative humidity was at 37% under still air. In addition, experiment without cooling vest was carried out as a control condition. The results obtained in these experiments were as follow: 1) By wearing both types of cooling vest, the whole body thermal sensation was closer to the neutral conditions than those without cooling vest. This effect was estimated to be equal to the 5.7 degrees C decrement of operative temperature. The subjects felt more comfortable with the cooling vest than without it. They felt more thermally acceptable than that without cooling vest. Wearing the cooling vest was useful to decrease the sweating sensation. 2) The local discomfort was observed when the local thermal sensation was "cool" approximately "cold" with the cooling vest. 3) The new cooling vest kept the skin temperature at chest at about 32.6 degrees C. On the other hand, by wearing the commercially available one, it lowered to about 31.1 degrees C. By wearing the new cooling vest, there was a tendency that local thermal sensation vote was higher and local comfort sensation vote was more comfortable than those of the condition wearing the commercially available one. It is important for the design of a comfortable cooling garment to prevent over-cool down from the body.  相似文献

Seven years of winter survival data for winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) were collected on a loam soil located on the Central Experimental Farm at Ottawa, Ontario (45 degrees 23'N, 75 degrees 43'W). The site was low-lying and subject to frequent winter flooding and ice-sheet formation. Two cultivars, a soft white and a hard red winter wheat, were planted in September. Crop establishment was measured in late fall and the percentage survival was measured in April of the following year. Meteorological data, which were available from the nearby weather site, were used to develop a large set of monthly weather indices that were felt to be important for winter survival. The objective of the study was to use genetic selection algorithms and artificial neural networks to select a subset of critical weather factors and topographic features and to model winter survival. The six weather indices selected were the total rain depth for December (mm), the total rain depth for February (mm), the number of days of the month with snow on the ground for January, the extreme minimum observed daily air temperature for March ( degrees C), the number of days of the month with snow on the ground for March, and the number of days of April with a daily maximum air temperature greater than 0 degrees C. It was found 89% of the variation in winter survival could be explained by these six weather indices, the cultivar, elevation and plot location.  相似文献

1. 1. Eight male Japanese Brazilians and 11 male Japanese volunteered for this study. Each one sat on a chair for 45 min at 40°C (r.h. 50%).

2. 2. Then, they exercised using a bicycle ergometer in a semi-reclining position for 45 min at 40% of maximal oxygen uptake.

3. 3. Thermal and comfort sensation confirmed that Japanese Brazilians felt cooler and more comfortable in 40°C environment than the Japanese.

4. 4. Oxygen uptake, sweat rate and body weight loss for both groups were not significantly different.

5. 5. Forearm blood flow and heart rate for Brazilians were significantly lower than those for Japanese.

6. 6. Skin temperature at chest region for Brazilians was found to be significantly higher than that for Japanese.

7. 7. Thus the thermoregulatory responses observed in Japanese Brazilians may be largely attributed to the climate in their native places located on the Tropic of Capricorn.

8. 8. These results may indicate that environment condition is the important factor in determining the thermoregulatory responses.

Thermally comfortable zones in Vietnamese were investigated during winter in Hanoi. The subjects were 21 males (age: 19.7 +/- 0.4 yrs; height: 165 +/- 1.5 cm; body mass: 55.1 +/- 1.1 kg) and 19 females (age: 19.7 +/- 0.4 yrs; height; 155.6 +/- 1.7 cm; body mass: 45.6 +/- 1.3 kg). Each participant entered singly the climatic chamber controlled at 22 degrees C and 40% RH. After 20 min rest, the participant was requested to indicate on a 7-point scale (Table 1) how he or she felt to the room temperature given. Then, the room temperature increased by 1 degrees C over 10 min every 20 min. Just before the rise of the room temperature, the participant judged his or her thermal sensation. More than 90% of the participants felt 24-29 degrees C of the room temperature as "slightly cool", "neutral" and "slightly warm" (Table 2). We defined these sensations as "thermally comfort". These thermally comfortable zones were quite higher than those (20-24 degrees C) recommended by ISO-7730 (1994). We discussed these discrepancies in terms of higher establishment of thermoregulatory set-point in the Vietnamese.  相似文献

The outdoor environment is deteriorating in many tropical cities due to rapid urbanization. This leads to a number of problems related to health and well-being of humans and also negatively affects social and commercial outdoor activities. The creation of thermally comfortable microclimates in urban environments is therefore very important. This paper discusses the influence of street-canyon geometry on outdoor thermal comfort in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Five sites with different urban geometry, ground cover, and distance from the sea were studied during the warmest season. The environmental parameters affecting thermal comfort, viz. air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation, were measured, and the thermal comfort was estimated by calculating the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET). The thermal comfort is far above the assumed comfort zone due to the combination of intense solar radiation, high temperatures, and low wind speeds, especially on clear days. The worst conditions were found in wide streets with low-rise buildings and no shade trees. The most comfortable conditions were found in narrow streets with tall buildings, especially if shade trees were present, as well as in areas near the coast where the sea breeze had a positive effect. In order to improve the outdoor comfort in Colombo, it is suggested to allow a more compact urban form with deeper street canyons and to provide additional shade through the use of trees, covered walkways, pedestrian arcades, etc. The opening up of the city's coastal strip would allow the sea breeze to penetrate further into the city.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated that the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) affects the recognition of facial expressions and attention to them. However, the relationship between 5-HTTLPR and the perceptual detection of others'' facial expressions, the process which takes place prior to emotional labeling (i.e., recognition), is not clear. To examine whether the perceptual detection of emotional facial expressions is influenced by the allelic variation (short/long) of 5-HTTLPR, happy and sad facial expressions were presented at weak and mid intensities (25% and 50%). Ninety-eight participants, genotyped for 5-HTTLPR, judged whether emotion in images of faces was present. Participants with short alleles showed higher sensitivity (d′) to happy than to sad expressions, while participants with long allele(s) showed no such positivity advantage. This effect of 5-HTTLPR was found at different facial expression intensities among males and females. The results suggest that at the perceptual stage, a short allele enhances the processing of positive facial expressions rather than that of negative facial expressions.  相似文献

Pleasant outdoor thermal conditions depend on a wide range of climatic elements. The impact of rainfall events, as important climatic elements, on providing thermal comfort, has been less explored in the available literature. The work presented herein investigates the impact of Rainy Days as well as a Day Prior to (Dprior) and a Day Post rain (Dpost) events on thermal conditions in the southern coastal region of the Caspian Sea. In this study, rainfall events during 1961–2017 observational period were categorized based on their intensity. Then, human thermal comfort during non-rainy (sunny) and rainy days was estimated and compared by using the radiation-driven Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) index, Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and Perceived Temperature (PT) index. Furthermore, difference between the average of thermal conditions in rainy days compared to a day prior and a day post rain events was calculated separately for comfort, cold and heat stress thresholds of each bioclimatic index. Finally, the correlation between the average of indices for rainy days and the frequency of rainfall events of each specific year was computed. Results suggested that overall average of studied indices for all rainy days is lower than the average for days prior and post the rain events. PET index has shown to be most impacted and reduced as a result of rain events and therefore more indicative of a cool ing effect. The observed difference in total average of PET in rainy days compared to non-rainy days were 8.30 °C, 5.86 °C and 8.85 °C for Babolsar, Rahst and Gorgan stations, respectively. Generally, the cooling effect of rain events on the temperature for a day prior rain events is higher than a day post rainfall. Finally, the trend analysis on rainy days in the studied period revealed that the average of bioclimatic indices in western stations (Babolsar and Rasht) are increasing whereas a decreasing trend was observed for Gorgan as more of an eastern station.  相似文献

This study investigated fear responses of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) to scale models. Fear responses of participants were assessed using rating scores assigned by judges. In Experiment 1, participants were presented with scale models of objects in furniture, vehicle, and mammal categories. Overall, the participants expressed stronger fear responses to mammal objects as compared to the other two kinds. In Experiment 2, participants were presented with scale models of furniture, new mammals, and animals composed of insects, birds, fish, and reptiles. As a whole, the participants showed stronger fear responses to the new mammal and animal objects than to furniture objects. Fear responses to mammal and animal objects were comparable. These results suggest that Japanese monkeys show stronger fear responses to objects possessing perceptual properties of animals, as opposed to objects that do not possess such properties.  相似文献

To investigate perceptual and neural correlates of future self-appraisals as a function of temporal distance, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants (11 women, eight men) made judgments about the applicability of trait adjectives to their near future selves (i.e., one month from now) and their distant future selves (i.e., three years from now). Behavioral results indicated people used fewer positive adjectives, more negative adjectives, recalled more specific events coming to mind and felt more psychologically connected to the near future self than the distant future self. Electrophysiological results demonstrated that negative trait adjectives elicited more positive ERP deflections than did positive trait adjectives in the interval between 550 and 800 ms (late positive component) within the near future self condition. However, within the same interval, there were no significant differences between negative and positive traits adjectives in the distant future self condition. The results suggest that negative emotional processing in future self-appraisals is modulated by temporal distance, consistent with predictions of construal level theory.  相似文献

Populations of migratory songbirds in western Europe show considerable variation in population trends between species and regions. The demographic and environmental causes of these large‐scale patterns are poorly understood. Using data from Constant Effort mist‐netting studies, we investigated relationships between changes in abundance, adult survival and seasonal weather conditions among 35 western European populations of eight species of migratory warblers (Sylviidae). We used cross‐species and within‐species comparisons to assess whether annual variation in survival was correlated with weather conditions during passage or winter. We estimated survival using CJS mark‐recapture models accounting for variation in the proportion of transient individuals and recapture rates. Species wintering in the humid bioclimatic zone of western Africa had significantly higher annual survival probabilities than species wintering in the arid bioclimatic zone of Africa (the Sahel). Rainfall in the Sahel was positively correlated with survival in at least some populations of five species. We found substantially fewer significant relationships with indices of weather during the autumn and spring passage periods, which may be due to the use of broad‐scale indices. Annual population changes were correlated with adult survival in all of our study species, although species undergoing widespread declines showed the weakest relationships.  相似文献

The fragmentation of landscapes produces habitat gaps where the distance between visual landmarks may exceed the perceptual range of a species and impose navigational constraints. We estimated the visual perceptual range of the Australian sleepy lizard, Tiliqua rugosa, by releasing individuals in the centre of a cleared arena in high temperature conditions, with a 0.5-m-high bush placed either 10, 20 or 30 m from the release site. Lizards were more likely to locate those bushes and shelter under them when they were closer, and no lizards found a bush at 30 m. In addition, lizards were less likely to move from the release point when bushes were at 30 m than when they were at the two closer distances. These data suggest that for sleepy lizards the perceptual range for a 0.5-m-high bush is about 20 m. In the uncleared chenopod shrub-land where these lizards live, suitable shelter bushes are an average of 10.5 m from any point in their home range, well within their perceptual range.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the thermoregulatory, metabolic, and perceptual effects of lower body (LBI) and whole body (WBI) immersion precooling techniques during submaximal exercise. Eleven healthy men completed two 30-min cycling bouts at 60% of maximal O(2) uptake preceded by immersion to the suprailiac crest (LBI) or clavicle (WBI) in 20 degrees C water. WBI produced significantly lower rectal temperature (T(re)) during minutes 24-30 of immersion and lower T(re), mean skin temperature, and mean body temperature for the first 24, 14, and 16 min of exercise, respectively. Body heat storage rates differed significantly for LBI and WBI during immersion and exercise, although no net differences were observed between conditions. For WBI, metabolic heat production and heart rate were significantly higher during immersion but not during exercise. Thermal sensation was significantly lower (felt colder) and thermal discomfort was significantly higher (less comfortable) for WBI during immersion and exercise. In conclusion, WBI and LBI attenuated T(re) increases during submaximal exercise and produced similar net heat storage over the protocol. LBI minimized metabolic increases and negative perceptual effects associated with WBI.  相似文献

Modulation of frontal lobes activity is believed to be an important pathway trough which the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis stress response impacts cognitive and emotional functioning. Here, we investigate the effects of stress on metacognition, which is the ability to monitor and control one''s own cognition. As the frontal lobes have been shown to play a critical role in metacognition, we predicted that under activation of the HPA axis, participants should be less accurate in the assessment of their own performances in a perceptual decision task, irrespective of the effect of stress on the first order perceptual decision itself. To test this prediction, we constituted three groups of high, medium and low stress responders based on cortisol concentration in saliva in response to a standardized psycho-social stress challenge (the Trier Social Stress Test). We then assessed the accuracy of participants'' confidence judgments in a visual discrimination task. As predicted, we found that high biological reactivity to stress correlates with lower sensitivity in metacognition. In sum, participants under stress know less when they know and when they do not know.  相似文献

In a dual-task paradigm, participants performed a spatial location working memory task and a forced two-choice perceptual decision task (neutral vs. fearful) with gradually morphed emotional faces (neutral ∼ fearful). Task-irrelevant word distractors (negative, neutral, and control) were experimentally manipulated during spatial working memory encoding. We hypothesized that, if affective perception is influenced by concurrent cognitive load using a working memory task, task-irrelevant emotional distractors would bias subsequent perceptual decision-making on ambiguous facial expression. We found that when either neutral or negative emotional words were presented as task-irrelevant working-memory distractors, participants more frequently reported fearful face perception - but only at the higher emotional intensity levels of morphed faces. Also, the affective perception bias due to negative emotional distractors correlated with a decrease in working memory performance. Taken together, our findings suggest that concurrent working memory load by task-irrelevant distractors has an impact on affective perception of facial expressions.  相似文献
