Serial data on live weights, height at withers and the weight/height ratio of 263 cows (3 to 9 years old) and 196 heifers (2 to 5 years old) were studied. The animals were of six red and white Holstein-Friesian (HF)/Guzera crosses (1/4, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 and > or = 31/32 HF-expected gene fraction). Separate analyses were performed for cows and heifers using the Proc Mixed of the SAS package. Models included the fixed effects of farm, season, reproductive and lactation status, two-factor interactions, quadratic regressions on age and age x crossbred group interaction, as continuous co-variables and regressions on the HF gene fraction and on breed heterozygosity, plus the animal random effect. Only heifer growth in height and weight/height was linear with age. In all three traits in both categories the individual additive-dominance model explained the variation between crossbred groups. The breed additive difference was not significant (P > 0.05) for cow and heifer live weight and for heifer weight/age ratio. Heterosis was significant for all traits except height of cows. Linear and quadratic regression coefficients for cows, were, respectively, for live weight, 35.20 +/- 5.23 kg/year and -1.54 +/- 0.43 kg/year2, for withers height, 2.49 +/- 0.29 cm/year and -0.15 +/- 0.02 cm/year2 and for weight/height, 0.22 +/- 0.04 kg/cm/year and -0.01 +/- 0.003 kg/cm/year2. Corresponding values for heifers were, for live weight, 153.46 +/- 37.06 kg/year and -15.69 +/- 4.91 kg/year2, while only linear coefficients applied to withers height (1.63 +/- 0.43 cm/year) and weight/height (0.16 +/- 0.03 kg/cm/year).  相似文献

Heat stress has negative effects on pregnancy rates of lactating dairy cattle. There are genetic differences in tolerance to heat stress; Bos taurus indicus (B. t. indicus) cattle and embryos are more thermotolerant than Bos taurus taurus (B. t. taurus). In the present study, the effects of sire and sire breed on conception and embryonic/fetal loss rates of lactating Holstein cows during the Brazilian summer were determined. In Experiment 1, cows (n=302) were AI after estrus detection or at a fixed-time with semen from one Gyr (B. t. indicus) or one Holstein sire (B. t. taurus). Pregnancy was diagnosed 80 days after AI. In Experiment 2, cows (n=811) were AI with semen from three Gyr and two Holstein sires. Pregnancy was diagnosed at 30-40 and at 60-80 days after AI. Cows diagnosed pregnant at the first examination but non-pregnant at the second were considered as having lost their embryo or fetus. Data were analyzed by logistic regression. The model considered the effect of sire within breed, sire breed, days postpartum, period of lactation, and AI type (AI after estrus versus fixed-time). There was no effect of the AI type, days postpartum or milk production on conception or embryonic loss rates. The use of Gyr bulls increased pregnancy rate when compared to Holstein bulls [9.1% (60/657) versus 5.0% (23/456), respectively, P=0.008; data from Experiments 1 and 2 combined]. Additionally, in Experiment 2, cows inseminated using semen from sire #4 (Gyr) had lower embryonic loss (10%) when compared with other B. t. indicus (35.3% and 40%) or B. t. taurus sires (18.2% and 38.5%, P=0.03). In conclusion, the use of B. t. indicus sires may result in higher conception rates in lactating Holstein cows during summer heat stress. Moreover, sire can affect embryonic loss and selection of bulls according to this criterion may result in higher parturition rates in lactating Holstein cows.  相似文献

Lifetime dairy production, reproduction and growth traits of 75 females sired by Holstein, Jersey or Brown Swiss bulls and Holstein-Friesian x Gir dams of 1/2 to 3/4 Holstein-Friesian fractions were compared. The animals were in a single herd under the same management. Milk, fat and protein yields, concentrates fed, reproduction, and weights were recorded throughout the lifetime of the cows. The data were analyzed by least squares techniques under models including the fixed effects of breed of sire, Bos taurus fraction and year of birth. Herd lifes for Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss crosses were 6.006 +/- 0.812, 8.129 +/- 0.863 and 7.247 +/- 0.777 years. Milk yields per day of herd life were 7.150 +/- 0.266, 6.757 +/- 0.282 and 6.249 +/- 0.254 kg. Weights of cull cows sold were 458 +/- 15, 415 +/- 15 and 457 +/- 13 kg. Based on these and on previously reported results of the same experiment, intakes of roughage and pasture were estimated from energy requirements. Lifetime expenditures on concentrates, roughages, pastures, milking, reproduction, and heifer rearing were calculated based on mean performance of each breed of sire, as well as on receipts from animals and milk sold (the latter with four sets of prices of protein, fat and carrier). The conclusion was that in systems of artificial female calf rearing and male calf wastage, the Jersey crosses appear to offer important economic benefits to farmers, which would be even greater if payment on milk protein and fat becomes effective.  相似文献

The working hypothesis was that 17 beta-estradiol (E(2)) negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis in regulation of LH secretion decreases during peripuberty in heifers of 2 different genotypes. We investigated whether Bos indicus heifers had a period postpuberty, as compared with prepuberty, of greater E(2) inhibition of LH secretion at a time when heifers of this genotype have been reported to have a period of anestrus. Prepubertal heifers 9 mo of age of 2 genotypes (B. indicus and B. taurus) were assigned to 3 groups (6 animals/group) to either remain intact (control), be ovariectomized, or be ovariectomized and implanted with E(2). Variables evaluated from 10 to 28 mo of age were circulating concentrations of progesterone (P(4)), presence of corpora lutea, and pulsatile pattern of LH release. Results confirmed that B. taurus heifers attained puberty at younger ages (P < 0.001) and at lower live weights (P = 0.015) than did B. indicus heifers (507 +/- 37 days of age vs. 678 +/- 7 days of age; 259 +/- 14 kg vs. 312 +/- 11 kg; respectively). There was cessation of E(2) inhibition of LH pulses coincident with the onset of puberty in heifers of both breed types but at a much younger age in B. taurus heifers. There was no evidence of enhanced negative feedback of E(2) on LH secretion subsequent to puberty in B. indicus heifers nor was there cessation of estrous cycles in control heifers of either breed type after puberty.  相似文献

Two analyses, cubic and piecewise random regression, were conducted to model growth of crossbred cattle from birth to about two years of age, investigating the ability of a piecewise procedure to fit growth traits without the complications of the cubic model. During a four-year period (1994-1997) of the Australian "Southern Crossbreeding Project", mature Hereford cows (N = 581) were mated to 97 sires of Angus, Belgian Blue, Hereford, Jersey, Limousin, South Devon, and Wagyu breeds, resulting in 1141 steers and heifers born over four years. Data included 13 (for steers) and eight (for heifers) live body weight measurements, made approximately every 50 days from birth until slaughter. The mixed model included fixed effects of sex, sire breed, age (linear, quadratic and cubic), and their interactions between sex and sire breed with age. Random effects were sire, dam, management (birth location, year, post-weaning groups), and permanent environmental effects and for each of these when possible, their interactions with linear, quadratic and cubic growth. In both models, body weights of all breeds increased over pre-weaning period, held fairly steady (slightly flattening) over the dry season then increased again towards the end of the feedlot period. The number of estimated parameters for the cubic model was 22 while for the piecewise model it was 32. It was concluded that the piecewise model was very similar to the cubic model in the fit to the data; with the piecewise model being marginally better. The piecewise model seems to fit the data better at the end of the growth period.  相似文献

A joint growth-carcass model using random regression was used to estimate the (co)variance components of beef cattle body weights and carcass quality traits and correlations between them. During a four-year period (1994-1997) of the Australian "southern crossbreeding project", mature Hereford cows (N = 581) were mated to 97 sires of Jersey, Wagyu, Angus, Hereford, South Devon, Limousin, and Belgian Blue breeds, resulting in 1141 calves. Data included 13 (for steers) and 8 (for heifers) body weight measurements approximately every 50 days from birth until slaughter and four carcass quality traits: hot standard carcass weight, rump fat depth, rib eye muscle area, and intramuscular fat content. The mixed model included fixed effects of sex, sire breed, age (linear, quadratic and cubic), and their interactions between sex and sire breed with age. Random effects were sire, dam, management (birth location, year, post-weaning groups), and permanent environmental effects, and their interactions with linear, quadratic and cubic growth, when possible. Phenotypic, sire and dam correlations between body weights and hot standard carcass weight and rib eye muscle area were positive and moderate to high from birth to feedlot period. Management variation accounted for the largest proportion of total variation in both growth and carcass traits. Management correlations between carcass traits were high, except between rump fat depth and intramuscular fat (r = 0.26). Management correlations between body weight and carcass traits during the pre-weaning period were positive except for intramuscular fat. The correlations were low from birth to weaning, then increased dramatically and were high during the feedlot period.  相似文献

The influence of exposure to ambient winter weather conditions (WW) during the final 90 d of gestation on serum hormones, plasma substrates, and birth weight of calves was evaluated in spring-calving, primiparous beef heifers. At of 192 +/- 14 d of gestation, heifers were assigned by expected calving date, breed, and sire of fetus to one of two treatments. Thirteen heifers were assigned to thermoneutral environment (TN; 12 degrees C) and housed in temperature-controlled rooms. Heifers in WW (n = 16) were maintained outdoors in drylots without access to shelter and given additional dietary energy when average weekly windchill fell below -6.7 degrees C. Body weights, hip-heights and samples of serum and plasma were obtained biweekly until heifers were relocated, approximately 7 d prior to expected calving. Polynomial response curves for concentrations of glucose and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) in plasma and cortisol in serum were not influenced by treatment. However, average concentrations of NEFA in plasma were increased (P < 0.02) and glucose tended to be higher (P = 0.13) in WW heifers compared to TN heifers (172.5 +/- 8.9 vs 136.9 +/- 7.7 mumol/L and 87.8 +/- 2.4 vs 83.3 +/- 2.7 mg/100ml for NEFA and glucose, respectively). Time trends of concentrations of estradiol in serum (P < 0.01) and hip-height to weight ratios were different (P < 0.05) for WW and TN. Birth weights of calves from TN heifers were greater (P < 0.06) than calves from WW heifers (42.3 +/- 2.0 vs 36.9 +/- 1.8 kg), but average calving difficulty scores were similar for both heifer groups (3.2 +/- 0.5 vs 2.7 +/- 0.4). These data suggest that exposing spring-calving cows to reduced effective ambient temperatures during the final 90 d of pregnancy may elevate energy-yielding metabolites in plasma and alter endocrine function. These changes may contribute to reduced birth weight of calves.  相似文献

Scrotal circumference, testicular length and body weight were measured in 3,090 yearling bulls of 12 breed groups finishing growth performance tests during a 5 yr period. Breeds were Limousin, Hereford, Charolais, Angus, Red Poll, Simmental, Pinzgauer, Brown Swiss, Gelbvieh and three crossbred breed groups. All bulls were born during a 60-d calving season starting in late March of each year and were subjected to similar management and environmental influences during the study. The bulls were the progeny of 307 sires averaging approximately 26 sires per breed group and 10 sons per sire. Breed group, sire within breed group, year and age-of-dam effects were important (P<0.01) for all testicular traits at both a constant age (354 d) and constant body weight (418 kg). Paternal half-sib estimates of heritability were 0.41 +/- 0.06 for ageconstant scrotal circumference, 0.34 +/- 0.06 for testicular length and 0.37 +/- 0.06 for calculated paired testicular volume, respectively. Age-constant genetic correlations between yearling body weight and testicular traits were small, indicating that testicular growth and body growth rates are largely independent, regardless of breed. Testicular size of bulls from 2-yr-old dams was smaller than that of bulls from older dams. Most of these age-of-dam effects on testicular size were removed when testicular size was adjusted for the effects of body weight, suggesting that age-of-dam effects on testicular size are primarily the result of age-of-dam effects on body weight. Age adjustment factors for yearling scrotal circumference did not differ (P>0.20) among breed groups and averaged 0.032 cm per day of age. Adjustment factors for age of dam were +1.3, +0.8, +0.4, and +0.0 cm for sons of 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-yr-old dams, respectively.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of clitoral stimulation on pregnancy rate to artificial insemination in 1,856 beef females. For unadjusted data, pregnancy rate to first service in nonstimulated females was 61% for cows and 59% for heifers, and that of females receiving clitoral stimulation was 69% for cows and 58% for heifers. After adjusting the data for the influences of age, breed, technician, and postpartum interval, clitoral stimulation increased first service pregnancy rate in cows (74 +/- 3% vs 59 +/- 3%, P<0.05), but not in heifers (53 +/- 5% vs 57 +/- 5%, P>0.10). Postpartum interval significantly influenced pregnancy rate, regardless of treatment, and clitoral stimulation was beneficial when applied to cows with relatively short postpartum intervals. Variation in the effect of clitoral stimulation on pregnancy rate was observed among technicians. Clitoral stimulation improved pregnancy rate more effectively in 3 to 4 year old cows than in cows 2 years old and cows 5 years of age or older. We concluded that clitoral stimulation at the time of artificial insemination was an effective means of increasing pregnancy rate in cows, but not in heifers.  相似文献

Sexual development and pubertal traits were studied in Holstein Frisian (Ho) and Brown Swiss (BS) bulls born and maintained under tropical conditions. Characteristics evaluated every 2 weeks, from 27 to 63 weeks of age, included live weight, scrotal circumference, testicular diameter, semen quality and sexual behavior. Puberty was defined as the age at which a bull first produced an ejaculate containing at least 50 x 106 spermatozoa, with a minimum of 10% progressive motility. Testicular growth was linear in Ho bulls and quadratic in BS bulls. There was no breed difference in age at puberty (Ho, 333 +/- 15.8 days; BS, 311 +/- 10.5 days). However, at puberty, live weight and scrotal circumference tended to be greater in Ho (276 +/- 16.9 kg and 28.4 +/- 1 cm, respectively) than in BS bulls (233 +/- 11.3 kg and 25.9 +/- 0.7 cm, respectively), and testicular diameter was larger for Ho (5.5 +/- 0.24 cm) than for BS bulls (4.8 +/- 0.16 cm). Pooled data for all bulls for semen characteristics at puberty were: volume, 6.3 +/- 0.6 ml; progressive motility, 26.8 +/- 4.4%; sperm concentration, 58.5 +/- 13.9 x 10(6) spermatozoa/ml, and 351.5 +/- 91.2 x 10(6) spermatozoa/ejaculate. These values improved until at least 18 weeks after puberty. Eighty-five percent of bulls mounted heifers by 206 days of age, but only a few bulls had mounts with ejaculation during the study. It was concluded that reproductive development was similar between Ho and BS bulls, but slower than that reported for dairy bulls in temperate areas. Variation in some characteristics, such as scrotal circumference, was observed among bulls within each breed group, which might be of benefit for genetic selection.  相似文献

Genetic selection has resulted in larger cows with high milk production potential but a tendency for poor fertility. In multiparous cows fetal development competes for nutrients with concurrent milk production. This study tested the hypotheses that (a) maternal age and milk yield during pregnancy alter calf birth size and (b) birth weight influences subsequent productivity and fertility. Concurrently born Holstein-Friesian heifers (n=65) with multiparous dams and three sires were monitored from birth to the end of their first lactation to assess effects of birth weight on growth, milk production and fertility. Calves were analyzed as three subgroups: low (L), average (A) and high (H) birth weight (BW) calves (n=21-22 per group). LBW calves were born 10 kg lighter than HBW calves and remained significantly lighter throughout the study. They were generally smaller in other measured indices (length, height, girth, ponderal index) between birth and 9 months and were more likely to have older dams (lactations 3-6) with higher peak yields (>42 kg/day). Milk production parameters were indistinguishable between the 3 birthweight groups and metabolic parameters (IGF-I, insulin, glucose) measured around first calving were unaffected. HBW offspring were more likely to have persistent corpora lutea following their first calving and other fertility parameters also tended to be worse. Sire influenced gestation length but not birth size. Sire heritability estimates showed that weight, IGF-I and insulin concentrations after first calving and fertility in the first lactation were all heritable. The results support the hypothesis that high milk production in the dam may predispose to birth of a smaller calf. Smaller birth size did not, however, have any subsequent adverse effects on productivity or fertility in the first lactation and sire was more influential at this stage.  相似文献

Chemical composition, digestibility, nutritive value and intake of hay from an agri-environmental management (EH) were compared with those from hay (Lolium perenne) from an intensive management (IH). IH was of low to moderate quality because of unfavourable weather conditions. EH was harvested mid-June of 2000 (EH1) and 2001 (EH2) on the same sward that had not received mineral fertilizer for 10 years. The EH was characterized by a species-rich botanical composition. On average, it had lower contents of protein (32%), NDF (9%) and ash (35%), and a higher concentration of water-soluble carbohydrates (117%) than IH. Digestibility of dry and organic matter, determined with sheep, was not different between IH and EH and averaged 59 and 63%, respectively. Crude fibre and NDF digestibility were lower in EH (58 and 57%, respectively) than in IH (70 and 69%, respectively). Net energy value for lactation did not differ between IH and EH and amounted to 4.78 MJ per kg DM. True protein digested in the small intestine and rumen degraded protein balance were lower in EH (63 and -60 g per kg DM) than in IH (71 and -33 g per kg DM). Intake of hay was investigated in Holstein-Friesian heifers and Belgian Blue double-muscled heifers (mean BW 280 +/- 22 kg and 269 +/- 21 kg, respectively), and in Belgian Blue non-lactating and non-pregnant double-muscled cows (initial BW 642 +/- 82 kg), using a cross-over design. Hay was freely available. It was supplemented with 1 kg concentrate daily. Dry matter intake from hay was higher for EH than for IH in heifers (4% and 13%, respectively in Holstein-Friesian and Belgian Blue heifers) and in cows (22%). Hay from an agri-environmental management may be used for low-performing animals, as energy intake only exceeded maintenance requirements by 20 to 35%. Several characteristics of EH were different between years, such as dry matter digestibility, net energy value for lactation and fermentable organic matter content.  相似文献

Crossbreeding of Holstein-Friesian dairy cows with both early maturing (e.g. Aberdeen Angus (AA)) and late maturing (e.g. Belgian Blue (BB)) beef breeds is commonly practised. In Ireland, genetic merit for growth rate of beef sires is expressed as expected progeny difference for carcass weight (EPD(CWT)). The objective of this study was to compare the progeny of Holstein-Friesian cows, sired by AA and BB bulls of low (L) and high (H) EPD(CWT) for performance and carcass traits. A total of 118 spring-born male progeny from 20 (9 AA and 11 BB) sires (8 L and 12 H) were managed together from shortly after birth to about 19 months of age. They were then assigned to one of two mean slaughter weights (560 kg (light) or 620 kg (heavy)). Following slaughter, carcasses were graded for conformation class and fat class, the 6th to 10th ribs joint was dissected as an indicator of carcass composition, and samples of subcutaneous fat and musculus longissimus were subjected to Hunterlab colour measurements. A sample of m. longissimus was also chemically analysed. Slaughter and carcass weights per day of age for AAL, AAH, BBL and BBH were 747, 789, 790 and 805 (s.e. 10.5) g, and 385, 411, 427 and 443 (s.e. 4.4) g, respectively. Corresponding carcass weight, kill-out proportion, carcass conformation class (scale 1 to 5) and carcass fat class (scale 1 to 5) values were 289, 312, 320 and 333 (s.e. 4.0) kg, 516, 522, 542 and 553 (s.e. 3.5) g/kg, 2.5, 2.4, 3.0 and 3.1 (s.e. 0.10), and 3.4, 3.5, 2.9 and 2.8 (s.e. 0.11). There were few breed type × genetic merit interactions. Delaying slaughter date increased slaughter weight, carcass weight and all measures of fatness. It also reduced the proportion of carcass weight in the hind quarter and the proportions of bone and muscle in the ribs joint. None of these effects accompanied the increase in carcass weight due to higher EPD(CWT). It is concluded that BB have superior production traits to AA. Selection of sires for higher EPD(CWT) increases growth rate, kill-out proportion and carcass weight of progeny with little effect on carcass or muscle traits. The extra carcass weight due to higher EPD(CWT) is more valuable commercially than a comparable carcass weight increment from a delay in slaughter date because it comprises a higher proportion of muscle.  相似文献

Nelore heifers usually begin their reproductive life at ⩾24 months of age mainly due to suboptimal nutritional conditions and genetics. This study aimed to determine the effect of expected progeny difference (EPD) for age at first calving and average daily gain (ADG) on puberty in Nelore (Bos taurus indicus) heifers. A total of 58 weaned heifers (initial BW=174±6 kg; age=9±1 months) were allocated into 28 feedlot pens. Heifers were born from four sires, of which two had low EPD for age at first calving (L; n=33) and two had high EPD for age at first calving (H; n=25). Then, heifers of each EPD were randomly assigned to high ADG (HG; 0.7 kg) or low ADG (LG; 0.3 kg), resulting in four treatments: heifers from L sires were submitted to either HG (LHG; n=17) or LG (LLG; n=16), and heifers from H sires were submitted to either HG (HHG; n=12), or LG (HLG; n=13). The HG heifers were fed a 75% grain diet, whereas the LG heifers received 93% of forage in their diet. Blood samples were collected at 9, 14, 18, 24 and 28 months of age for IGF1 and leptin determination. There was a treatment effect (P<0.01) on the proportion of heifers that attained puberty by 18 (62%, 0%, 0% and 0%), 24 (100%, 6%, 54% and 0%) or 36 (100%, 100%, 100% and 38%) months of age for LHG, LLG, HHG and HLG treatments, respectively. In addition, mean age at puberty was different across treatments (P<0.01). Heifers from the LHG achieved puberty at the earliest age when compared with cohorts from other treatments (18.1, 28.9, 23.9 and 34.5 months for LHG, LLG, HHG and HLG, respectively). Serum IGF1 concentrations were higher for L heifers compared with H cohorts at 9, 14, 18, 24 and 28 months of age (P<0.01; treatment×age interaction), whereas circulating leptin concentrations were higher (P<0.01; age effect) as heifers became older, regardless of the treatments. In conclusion, only Nelore heifers with favorable genetic merit for age at first calving were able to attain puberty by 18 months of age. In heifers with unfavorable genetic merit for age at first calving, supplementary feeding to achieve high ADG was unable to shift the age at puberty below 24 months.  相似文献

Genetic evaluation of Piétrain sires in Flanders occurs under standardized conditions, on test stations with fixed dam breeds, standardized diets and uniform management practices. As environmental conditions vary on commercial farms and differ from the test stations, this study aimed at understanding to what extent the sire, the dam breed and the interaction between both affects the translation of breeding values to practice. Dams of two commercial breeds were inseminated with semen from one of five different sires selected for contrasting breeding values (daily gain, feed conversion ratio and carcass quality). For each sire by dam breed combination, six pen replicates (with three gilts and three barrows per pen) were evaluated for growth performance from 9 weeks of age (20 kg) to slaughter (110 kg), and for carcass and meat quality. In our experimental setup, both sire and dam breed affected growth, carcass and meat quality traits. No significant sire×dam breed interactions on performance could be detected. Though a tendency for interaction on average daily feed intake between 20 and 110 kg (P=0.087), and on pork colour (lightness) (P=0.093) was present. In general, offspring of all tested sires behaved similarly in both dam breeds, indicating that estimated breeding values for Piétrain sires determined in one dam breed are representative in other dam breeds as well.  相似文献

A sensitive and specific double-antibody RIA for a bovine pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (bPAG) is described. The limit of detection was 0.2 ng/ml. The assay was specific for bPAG in that pituitary and placental gonadotropic hormones and other placental or serum proteins assayed in serial dilutions did not cross-react. The RIA allowed measurement of bPAG in placental extracts, fetal serum, fetal fluids, and serum or plasma of pregnant cows. About 20% of unbred heifers and nonpregnant cows had detectable levels ranging from 0.30 +/- 0.09 to 0.50 +/- 0.17 ng/ml (mean +/- SD), and 15% of bull sera showed higher concentrations (3.01 +/- 1.73 ng/ml) of bPAG or bPAG-like protein. Variations among animals was observed in fetal serum bPAG concentrations. Bovine PAG was detected in maternal peripheral blood at Day 22 of pregnancy (mean +/- SD, 0.38 +/- 0.13 ng/ml) in some animals and at Day 30 in all pregnant cows. Peripheral serum bPAG levels increased progressively to 3.60 +/- 1.73 ng/ml (mean +/- SD) at Day 30 of pregnancy, to 24.53 +/- 8.81 ng/ml at Day 120, and to 1551.91 +/- 589.68 ng/ml at Day 270. Peak concentration of bPAG was 2462.42 +/- 1017.88 ng/ml and it occurred 1-5 days prior to parturition. After delivery, bPAG concentrations decreased steadily to 499.63 +/- 267.20 ng/ml at Day 14 postpartum (pp), 10.12 +/- 7.84 ng/ml at Day 60 pp, and 1.44 +/- 1.08 ng/ml at Day 90 pp. The undetectable concentration (less than 0.20 ng/ml) was reached by Day 100 +/- 20 pp. An investigation undertaken in Holstein heifers, Holstein cows, and Hereford cows used as recipients for purebred Holstein embryos supplied evidence of the influence of breed of recipient and sex of fetuses on peripheral concentrations of bPAG. A herd of 430 Holstein-Friesian heifers that had received transferred embryos were bled at Day 35 postestrus (pe) for measurement of bPAG. The bPAG was detected in 287 of 430 serum samples analyzed. By rectal palpation performed at Day 45 pe, 267 heifers with detectable levels of bPAG at Day 35 pe were confirmed to be pregnant as were 3 of 143 heifers previously diagnosed as not pregnant by RIA. These results suggest that detection of this placental-specific antigen in the serum could be used as a specific serological method for early pregnancy diagnosis in cattle from 28 days after breeding.  相似文献

Weights of the gravid uterus and fetus as well as the fetal measurements were determined at slaughter for 107 Bos taurus cows grazed on improved pastures and for 70 Bos indicus cows grazed on native pastures in northern Australia. The stage of gestation was assessed from palpation per rectum in early-to-mid gestation and at slaughter and from fetal development characteristics at slaughter. The age and breed of the cow and the sex of the fetus did not significantly affect any of the uterine components or fetal measurements. Growth curves had dominant, positive linear components but negative quadratic ones, which improved the fit, particularly for the later stages of gestation. Uterine components and fetal measurements were highly correlated (0.94 to 0.99). For Bos taurus cows, there were higher estimates at birth for weights of the gravid uterus and the fetus, but estimates for other fetal measurements were similar to those for Bos indicus cows. Major fetal growth occurred during the third trimester, with the length of the foreleg tending to change relatively slowly and the head width quite fast during the first trimester. Correction factors for cow liveweight to adjust to commonality for non-pregnancy were 5, 7, 10, 14, 20, 29, 43 and 65 kg for Bos taurus and 2, 4, 6, 10, 15, 23, 35 and 51 kg for Bos indicus at 2 to 9 months of gestation.  相似文献

Although heat shock proteins (Hsps) are primarily considered as being intracellular, this study identified the presence of Hsp72 in plasma from female Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle. Plasma samples were collected from the same animals at different ages and on different days after calving and accordingly divided into 5 age classes. The age classes were calves less than 235 days of age, young heifers between 235 and 305 days of age, older heifers between 305 and 560 days of age, cows early in lactation, and cows later in lactation. For a subsample of animals within each age class, replicate plasma samples were collected from 1 to 7 days apart to test whether the Hsp72 concentration levels are repeatable on this shorter timescale. Hsp72 was observed in plasma samples from animals of all 5 age classes. For animals with blood samples taken a few days apart, the repeatability (within age class) of the Hsp72 concentration was 0.52 +/- 0.06. Age and days from calving significantly affected the Hsp72 concentration level. The highest Hsp72 level was observed in older heifers (305-560 days of age). The repeatability of Hsp72 concentrations across age classes within animal was 0.22 +/- 0.06. High environmental sensitivity and negative genetic associations between production and health traits in this high-producing breed have been documented earlier. Hsp72 is believed to be strictly stress inducible, and the finding of Hsp72 in plasma indicates that even apparently healthy individuals may experience extrinsic or intrinsic stress (or both).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the difference in birth weight and gestation length between Japanese Black calves obtained from transfer of bovine embryos produced in vitro (IVP) and those developed in vivo (IVD). An additional objective was to clarify the sire effect on birth weight and gestation length and to examine the birth rate of heavier calves. Two Japanese Black bulls breed at our experimental station were used as a semen source for production of IVP and IVD embryos. Thirty-eight Japanese Black heifers and cows of various genetic backgrounds were used as embryo donors for IVD embryos. Ovaries for IVP embryos were collected at random at a local slaughterhouse from Japanese Black cattle of various genetic backgrounds. IVP embryos were produced using co-culturing with cumulus cells in 5% CS+TCM 199. Both the IVD and IVP embryos were transferred non-surgically to Holstein recipients on day 7+/-1 of estrous cycle. In this study, the birth weights and gestation lengths of half-sib single calves for bull A and B were analyzed. The numbers of single calves born by transfer of IVP and IVD embryos for bull A and B were 133 and 121, 243 and 465, respectively. The birth weight of the IVP calves was significantly higher (P<0.01) than that of the IVD (bull A: 31.0+/-0.4 kg versus 27.2+/-0.4 kg and bull B: 29.9+/-0.6 kg versus 26.6+/-0.2 kg). Gestation length of the IVP calves for bull A was significantly longer (P<0.01) than that of the IVD (291.9+/-0.9 days versus 283.6+/-0.5 days). However, for bull B, there were no differences in gestation length between the IVP and IVD calves (285.9+/-0.7 days versus 286.2+/-0.3 days). These results clearly indicated that IVP calves had heavier birth weights than IVD calves but that the average gestation length of IVP calves was not always longer than that of IVD calves. Furthermore, the birth rate of heavier calves and the incidence of stillbirth and perinatal mortality up to 48 h post partum in IVP calves (bull A: 11.3%, bull B: 7.8%) were greater (P<0.05) than those in IVD calves from both bulls (bull A: 4.1%, bull B: 3.7%).  相似文献

The aims of the present study were to compare (1) Holstein-Friesian heifers versus early postpartum lactating cows, and (2) different age categories of crossbred beef heifers versus cows, in terms of oocyte yield, morphological quality and developmental competence. Four experiments were designed to test the associated hypotheses. In Experiment 1, ovum pick up was carried out twice weekly for a period of 5 weeks on Holstein-Friesian heifers (n = 8) and early postpartum cows (n = 8). Oocytes were submitted to in vitro maturation (IVM), fertilization and culture. Significantly more follicles were punctured on the ovaries of heifers than cows (10.4 versus 7.8, P < 0.001). This was reflected in a significantly higher number of total oocytes (4.7 versus 2.8, P < 0.001) and grade 1-2 oocytes recovered/animal from heifers than from cows (3.0 versus 1.8, P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the percentage of oocytes cleaving after fertilization, or in the percentage reaching the blastocyst stage between heifers and cows. In Experiment 2, oocytes were obtained by manual aspiration from the ovaries of slaughtered crossbred beef heifers (under 30 months, n = 1241) and cows (over 4 years old, n = 1125), and processed in vitro as above. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of the number of aspirated follicles or oocytes recovered. A significantly higher proportion (P < 0.01) of cow oocytes than heifer oocytes reached the blastocyst stage (Day 8: 46.5% versus 33.4%). In Experiment 3, ovaries were separated according to age of heifer into three groups: (1) 12-18 months, (2) 19-24 months and (3) 25-30 months, and compared with cow oocytes. There was no significant difference in the blastocyst yield between the different age groups of heifers. Irrespective of heifer age, the blastocyst yield on Day 8 was significantly lower than that from cow oocytes (35.0, 35.2, 36.5 and 48.3%, respectively, P < 0.05). In Experiment 4, a significantly higher proportion (P < 0.001) of presumptive zygotes derived from abattoir-derived cow oocytes reached the blastocyst stage following culture in vivo in the ewe oviduct than those derived from heifer oocytes (Day 8: 53.1% versus 25.2% for cow and heifer oocytes, respectively). In conclusion, the origin of the oocyte has a significant impact on its subsequent developmental potential. These results would suggest that in an in vitro production system, cow oocytes should be preferentially used over those from heifers in order to maximize blastocyst development.  相似文献
