Although the densities of tobacco pests have been decreased in garlic‐tobacco fields, further studies are needed to judge the effects of garlic transplanting densities or times on tobacco pests in tobacco fields. Therefore, field experiments were conducted in Liancheng County in Longyan City, Fujian Province, in China in 2014 and 2015. Myzus persicae (Sulzer) abundance, the species or abundance ratios of enemies and pests, the intercropping effects and the tobacco yield and crop value showed that the effects of transplanting tobacco 10 days after garlic transplantation at a density of 5.85 individual plants per square meter on pests were stronger than those of other treatments. Aphid abundance was significantly lower in transplanting tobacco 10 days after garlic transplantation at a density of 5.85 individual plants per square meter than in the other treatments. The ratio between enemies and pests in transplanting tobacco 10 days after garlic transplantation at a density of 5.85 individual plants per square meter was higher than those in the other treatments. The intercropping effects of transplanting tobacco 10 days after garlic transplantation at a density of 5.85 individual plants per square meter on Myzus persicae, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius), Heliothis assulta Guenee and Nezara viridula Linnaeus were significantly stronger than those of the other treatments, whereas the effects of transplanting tobacco 15 days after garlic transplantation at a garlic density of 5.85 individual plants per square meter on Agrotis ypsilon (Rottemberg) were significantly stronger. Additionally, the yield and crop value of transplanting tobacco 10 days after garlic was transplanted at a density of 5.85 individual plants m?2 were higher than those of the other treatments. Therefore, our study demonstrated that the model of transplanting tobacco 10 days after garlic was transplanted at a density of 5.85 individual plants m?2 is an optimal management strategy to control flue‐cured tobacco pests and to acquire higher crop yield in garlic‐tobacco fields.  相似文献

BackgroundCancer is an increasing problem in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Tobacco use is a well-established risk factor for many types of cancers. Evidence on burden of cancer attributable to tobacco is essential to raise public and political awareness of the negative effects of tobacco on cancer and to be used to stimulate political action aims at reducing smoking prevalence in ASEAN member countries. The objective of this study was to estimate burden of cancer attributable to tobacco smoking in ASEAN, 2012.MethodsIn this study, smoking prevalence was combined with Relative Risks (RRs) of cancer to obtain Smoking Attributable Fractions (SAFs). Cancer incidence and mortality data among individuals aged 15 years and older were derived from GLOBOCAN 2012. Fourteen types of cancer were included in the analysis. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to examine the impact of the use of alternative RRs and the use of alternative prevalence of smoking in some countries.ResultsThe findings showed that tobacco smoking was responsible for 131,502 cancer incidence and 105,830 cancer mortality in ASEAN countries in 2012. In other words, tobacco smoking was accounted for 28.4% (43.3% in male and 8.5% in female) of cancer incidence and 30.5% (44.2% in male and 9.4% in female) of cancer mortality in ASEAN. When looking at the types of cancer, lung cancer showed the strongest association with tobacco smoking. Incidence of cancer and cancer mortality attributable to tobacco smoking varied by countries due to the differences in size of population, background risk of cancer, and prevalence of smoking in each country. According to the sensitivity analyses, RRs of lung cancer, pharynx cancer, and larynx cancer used in the estimates have significant impact on the estimates.ConclusionsAs about one-third of cancer incidence and mortality in ASEAN are attributable to tobacco smoking ASEAN member countries are strongly encouraged to put in place stronger tobacco control policies and to strengthen the existing tobacco control measure in order to effectively control cancer.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To examine the association between self reported alcohol intake and subsequent mortality from all causes and if the effect of alcohol intake on the risk of death is modified by sex, age, body mass index, and smoking. DESIGN--Prospective population study with baseline assessment of alcohol and tobacco consumption and body mass index, and 10-12 years'' follow up of mortality. SETTING--Copenhagen city heart study, Denmark. SUBJECTS--7234 women and 6051 men aged 30-79 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE--Number and time of deaths from 1976 to 1988. RESULTS--A total of 2229 people died, 1398 being men. A U shaped curve described the relation between alcohol intake and mortality. The lowest risk was observed at one to six alcoholic beverages a week (relative risk set at 1). Abstainers had a relative risk of 1.37 (95% confidence interval 1.20 to 1.56) whereas those drinking more than 70 beverages a week had a relative risk of 2.29 (1.75 to 3.00). Among the drinkers, the risk was significantly increased only among those drinking more than 42 beverages a week. Sex, age, body mass index, and smoking did not significantly modify the risk function. The risk among heavy drinkers was slightly reduced when smoking was controlled for. The risk function was similar in the first and second period of six years of observation. CONCLUSION--Alcohol intake showed a U shaped relation to mortality with the nadir at one to six beverages a week. The risk function was not modified by sex, age, body mass index, or smoking and remained stable over 12 years.

Effects of droplet size and volumetric application rate of tractor-applied lambda cyhalothrin (Karate Z 2.08 SC) on larval tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), mortality and insecticide deposition on and within the canopy of mature cotton were explored by use of a laboratory bioassay incorporating field-sprayed cotton and a field trial incorporating natural insect infestations. Insecticide was applied in all combinations of three distinct droplet sizes and three volumetric application rates. Mortality of third-instar tobacco budworm occurring in leaf-disk bioassays was highly correlated with insecticide deposits (microg/leaf disk) at upper- and midcanopy levels. At the upper canopy level, mortality was negatively correlated with volumetric application rate and was not significantly correlated with droplet size. Deposit was negatively correlated with volumetric application rate at the lower plant level and larval mortality decreased with increasing droplet size. Results from this study do not support the recommendations of high volumetric application rates; and although droplet size was less influential than volumetric application rate in deposit and insect mortality, the data indicate a significant trend toward increased midcanopy larval mortality with smaller droplets.  相似文献

Tobacco use and under-nutrition are major public health concerns and tuberculosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in India. Using a cohort of 148,173 persons (recruited 1991-1997 and followed-up 1997-2003) the joint effects of tobacco use and BMI on tuberculosis mortality was studied. Tobacco use in any form and low-BMI had joint effect on tuberculosis mortality and the interaction effect was synergistic in men and antagonistic in women. Self-reported tuberculosis was associated with increased risk of tuberculosis mortality. In contrast, no such association was observed for self-reported diabetes persons. The risk pattern remained unchanged even after excluding tuberculosis deaths occurred within 1(st) two years of follow-up. This study highlights importance of age consideration of individual while excluding early deaths. Around 27% male tuberculosis deaths were attributable to their being underweight and smoker, while 22% male and 37% female deaths were attributable to their being underweight and smokeless tobacco user.  相似文献

Estimates of the carbon monoxide yield of their cigarettes have been obtained for 4910 smokers (68% of all smokers) in the Whitehall study of men aged 40 to 64. In the 10 years after examination 635 men died. When men smoking cigarettes with high carbon monoxide yield were compared with those smoking cigarettes with a low yield, and after adjusting for age, employment grade, amount smoked, and tar yield, the risk of death was 32% lower for coronary heart disease, 49% higher for lung cancer, and 10% lower for total mortality; these differences were not statistically significant. Among men who said that they inhaled the risk of fatal coronary heart disease was 51% lower in the high carbon monoxide group (p less than 0.01), while the risk of lung cancer was 75% higher. These results provide no evidence that a smoker can reduce his risk of death by smoking a brand with a low carbon monoxide yield; he might even increase it. The complex interactions between characteristics of the smoker, smoking behaviour, constituents of tobacco smoke, and health are again demonstrated.  相似文献

The effects of mustard trypsin inhibitor MTI-2 expressed at different levels in transgenic tobacco, arabidopsis and oilseed rape lines have been evaluated against three different lepidopteran insect pests. 1. Plutella xylostella (L.) larvae were the most sensitive to the ingestion of MTI-2. The inhibitor expressed at high levels in arabidopsis plants caused rapid and complete mortality. High mortality and significantly delayed larval development were also detectable in oilseed rape expressing MTI-2 at lower levels. 2. Mamestra brassicae (L.) larvae were sensitive only at high MTI-2 expression level, as obtained in transgenic tobacco and arabidopsis, whereas no effects were observed for larvae fed on plants showing relatively low expression levels such as those of oilseed rape lines. 3. Feeding bioassays with Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) larvae were carried out using the same oilseed rape lines, showing that at these low expression levels no mortality was observed although a delay in larval development did occur. The levels of insect gut proteolytic activities of the larvae still alive at the end of a 7 day feeding bioassay were usually higher than in the controls, but no new proteinases were expressed in any case. The combined results described in this paper demonstrate altogether the relevance of a case-by-case analysis [target insects and proteinase inhibitor (PI) level of expression in planta] in a PI-based strategy for plant protection.  相似文献

Tobacco-related mortality is one of the biggest killers in American medicine. Evidence suggests that if adolescents can be kept tobacco-free, most will never start using tobacco. Therefore, tobacco control policies directed at the youth population could provide an effective method for sustaining long-term reductions in smoking in all segments of the population. Many forms of tobacco control policies have been implemented including restrictive laws, public campaigns, and taxation duties; there has been disagreement over which is most effective. We investigate the efficacy of various methods of tobacco control in youth and present a review of the published evidence. Econometric data for both youth access restrictions and environmental tobacco smoke restrictions afford ambiguous results. Results vary in a continuum from a moderate negative effect toward, ironically, a marginal positive effect on smoking. While information dissemination policies may be somewhat effective on the onset, they are limited in their effect and eventually diminish over time. We conclude that increases in price affect teen smoking to a great degree. Most estimates show that for a 10 percent increase in prices, which could be implemented by a tax per pack, a 15 percent decrease in cigarettes consumed could be accomplished. Taxation policies are an effective means of preventative medicine.  相似文献

The present investigation examined the temporal relationships between changes in coronary artery heart disease (CAHD) mortality rates from whites (1938-1980) and changes in national measures of dietary elements, tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption, and unemployment. The magnitude and latency of the causal relationships were estimated with the use of cross-lagged correlation functions (CCFs) and Granger causality tests. Preliminary CCFs showed consistent correlational patterns between CAHD and tobacco, ethanol, and dietary fats. There was little association between CAHD and dietary cholesterol. Ethanol, tobacco, and the ratio of saturated to polyunsaturated fats (S:P) were analyzed for directional causality using Granger causality tests. The S:P ratio demonstrated a unidirectional Granger causal relationship with CAHD mortality in all sex and age groups. The estimated latency of this relationship was 23 to 30 years. This finding supports a causal relationship between diet, specifically fats, and the risk of CAHD two or three decades later.  相似文献

Changes in free IAA level were studied in the leaves of the central stem zone of short-day tobacco (Mcotianatabacum, cv. Maryland Mammoth) and long-day tobacco(Nicotiana silvestris) in inductive photoperiodic regime after 10, 20, 30 and 40 d, respectively. The leaves of SD tobacco Mammoth showed a high free IAA level in vegetative plants kept under long days but it significantly decreased (by ca. 50 %) after 10, 30 and 40 short days, respectively. After 20 short days the IAA level was as high as in the leaves of plants at the beginning of inductive treatment. The changes of freeIAA level in the leaves of LD tobacco N.silvestris were similar to those of SD Mammoth, but the IAA level in this species was significantly lower than that of Mammoth throughout the investigated period. Consequently, the changes observed in N. silvestris were much less pronounced. Plants of both tobacco species were fully induced to flowering by 30 inductive days and this was associated with differentiation of the flower organs. Application of 10 -4 M IAA during the last 10 d of the inductive treatment of 30 d significantly reduced flowering in SD tobacco Mammoth without changing the stem length and apex width. Apex length was slightly reduced. IAA application elicited almost no effect inN. silvestris. The results are discussed with respect to the possible role of IAA in flower induction in SD and LD plants.  相似文献

BackgroundLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the US. While an extensive literature exists detailing lung cancer risk factors and mortality among patients with a history of tobacco use, the data are more limited among individuals who have never smoked. The purpose of this investigation is to compare survival rates between the two groups and evaluate potential risk factors among never smokers.MethodsThis retrospective study included 3380 smokers and 334 never smokers who were diagnosed with lung cancer at Stony Brook University Hospital between 2003 and 2016. 1-, 3-, 5- and 10-year survival outcomes, stratified by smoking status, were compared and Kaplan-Meier curves for overall survival are provided. Cox Proportional Hazard models were used to evaluate factors influencing survival among never smokers.ResultsNever smokers with lung cancer were more likely to be female, be diagnosed with adenocarcinoma histology, and had fewer comorbidities than lung cancer patients who smoked. Although 60% of patients were diagnosed at a later stage of disease development, regardless of smoking status, overall short- and long-term survival was significantly higher among never smokers compared to those with a history of tobacco use. In addition to age and stage at diagnosis, a history of diabetes was found to be a significant prognostic factor for decreased survival among never smokers (HR=3.15, 95% CI (1.74, 5.71)).ConclusionsData from the present investigation suggest that, regardless of smoking status, approximately three of every five lung cancer patients are diagnosed at a later stage, and that both short- and long-term survival outcomes are significantly better among never smokers compared to those with a history of tobacco use. Additional studies are required to validate these findings and better explain the mechanistic drivers for the improved outcomes among never smokers.  相似文献

The effects on growth and mortality of larvae of pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella, Saunders), bollworm (Heliothis zea, Boddie) and tobacco budworm (Heliothis virescens, F.) of adding selected C10–C12 fatty acid methyl esters to a standard diet were determined. The antibiotic activity of straight chain saturated esters was compared to the activity of esters with an olefinic bond either at C-2 or terminally or with a terminal acetylenic or cyclopropyl group. The ester with the greatest activity was the naturally occurring compound methyl (Z,Z)-deca-2,8-diene-4,6-diynoate (matricaria ester) which was lethal to all pink bollworm larvae at 0.01% in the diet and lethal to all bollworm and tobacco budworm larvae at 0.05%.  相似文献

Demographic and health conditions among Hmong in Thailand were examined in comparison with other ethnic groups which closely resemble the ethnic origins of Southeast Asian refugees in the U.S. Thailand Hmong have very large extended family households, very high birth rates, low use of contraception, very young age at first marriage, and, compared with other highland minorities, relatively low infant and crude mortality rates. Hmong use of tobacco and alcohol and other stimulants is lower than other ethnic groups, and is much more frequent among men than among women. Opium was used by 15% of the men in the surveyed village, lower than among another highland group, but higher than in surveyed lowland villages. Fewer illnesses were reported by Hmong in the 7 days prior to survey than in other rural groups. Relatively low Hmong morbidity and mortality as compared with other highland ethnic groups may be associated with low use of tobacco and alcohol, and with the sharing of child care responsibilities within the large Hmong extended family households]This is the revised version of a paper presented at the Psychosocial Workshop of the Population Association of America Annual Meeting, Boston, 27 March 1985. BackgroundThe objective of this study is to estimate the gap between smoking prevalence and lung cancer mortality and provide predictions of lung cancer mortality based on previous smoking prevalence.Materials and methodsWe used data from the Spanish National Health Surveys (2003, 2006 and 2011) to obtain information about tobacco use and data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute to obtain cancer mortality rates from 1980 to 2013. We calculated the cross-correlation among the historical series of smoking prevalence and lung cancer mortality rate (LCMR) to estimate the most likely time gap between both series. We also predicted the magnitude and timing of the LCMR peak.ResultsAll cross-correlations were statistically significant and positive (all above 0.8). For men, the most likely gap ranges from 20 to 34 years. The age-adjusted LCMR increased by 3.2 deaths per 100,000 people for every 1 unit increase in the smoking prevalence 29 years earlier. The highest rate for men was observed in 1995 (55.6 deaths). For women, the most likely gap ranges from 10 to 37 years. The age-adjusted LCMR increased by 0.28 deaths per 100,000 people for every 1 unit increase in the smoking prevalence 32 years earlier. The maximum rate is expected to occur in 2026 (10.3 deaths).ConclusionThe time series of prevalence of tobacco smoking explains the mortality from lung cancer with a distance (or gap) of around 30 years. According to the lagged smoking prevalence, the lung cancer mortality among men is declining while in women continues to rise (maximum expected in 2026).  相似文献

Background

Smoking and passive smoking are collectively the biggest preventable cause of death in Bangladesh, with major public health burden of morbidity, disability, mortality and community costs. The available studies of tobacco use in Bangladesh, however, do not necessarily employ nationally representative samples needed to monitor the problem at a national scale. This paper examines the prevalence and patterns of tobacco use among adults in Bangladesh and the changes over time using large nationally representative comparable surveys.

Methods

Using data from two enumerations of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Bangladesh Project conducted in 2009 and 2012, prevalence estimates are obtained for all tobacco products by socio-economic determinants and sample types of over 90,000 individuals drawn from over 30,000 households. Household level sample weights are used to obtain nationally representative prevalence estimates and standard errors. Statistical tests of difference in the estimates between two time periods are based on a logistic regression model that accounts for the complex sampling design. Using a multinomial logit model, the time trend in tobacco use status is identified to capture the effects of macro level determinants including changes in tobacco control policies.

Results

Between 2009 and 2012, overall tobacco use went down from 42.4% to 36.3%. The decline is more pronounced with respect to smokeless tobacco use than smoking. The prevalence of exclusive cigarette smoking went up from 7.2% to 10.6%; exclusive bidi smoking remained stable at around 2%; while smoking both cigarette and bidi went down from 4.6% to 1.8%; exclusive smokeless tobacco use went down from 20.2% to 16.9%; and both smokeless tobacco use and smoking went down from 8.4% to 5.1%. In general, the prevalence of tobacco use is higher among men, increases from younger to older age groups, and is higher among poorer people. Smoking prevalence is the highest among the slum population, followed by the tribal population, the national population and the border area population, suggesting greater burden of tobacco use among the disadvantaged groups.

Conclusions

The overall decline in tobacco use can be viewed as a structural shift in the tobacco market in Bangladesh from low value products such as bidi and smokeless tobacco to high value cigarettes, which is expected with the growth in income and purchasing power of the general population. Despite the reduction in overall tobacco use, the male smoking prevalence in Bangladesh is still high at 37%. The world average of daily smoking among men is 31.1%. The Tobacco Control Act 2005 and the Amendment have yet to make a significant impact in curbing tobacco usage in Bangladesh. The findings in this paper further suggest that the tobacco control policies in Bangladesh need to include targeted interventions to restrain the use of particular types of tobacco products among specific demographic and socio-economic groups of the population, such as smoked tobacco among men, smokeless tobacco among women, and both smoked and smokeless tobacco among those living in rural areas, those in low socio-economic status and those belonging to the tribal and the slum population.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To assess the hazards associated with long term use of tobacco. DESIGN--Prospective study of mortality in relation to smoking habits assessed in 1951 and again from time to time thereafter, with causes sought of deaths over 40 years (to 1991). Continuation of a study that was last reported after 20 years'' follow up (1951-71). SUBJECTS--34,439 British male doctors who replied to a postal questionnaire in 1951, of whom 10,000 had died during the first 20 years and another 10,000 have died during the second 20 years. RESULTS--Excess mortality associated with smoking was about twice as extreme during the second half of the study as it had been during the first half. The death rate ratios during 1971-91 (comparing continuing cigarette smokers with life-long non-smokers) were approximately threefold at ages 45-64 and twofold at ages 65-84. The excess mortality was chiefly from diseases that can be caused by smoking. Positive associations with smoking were confirmed for death from cancers of the mouth, oesophagus, pharynx, larynx, lung, pancreas, and bladder; from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other respiratory diseases; from vascular diseases; from peptic ulcer; and (perhaps because of confounding by personality and alcohol use) from cirrhosis, suicide, and poisoning. A negative association was confirmed with death from Parkinson''s disease. Those who stopped smoking before middle age subsequently avoided almost all of the excess risk that they would otherwise have suffered, but even those who stopped smoking in middle age were subsequently at substantially less risk than those who continued to smoke. CONCLUSION--Results from the first 20 years of this study, and of other studies at that time, substantially underestimated the hazards of long term use of tobacco. It now seems that about half of all regular cigarette smokers will eventually be killed by their habit.  相似文献
