Early onset pre-eclampsia: recognition of underlying renal disease.

A follow up study of 84 patients with early onset pre-eclampsia (before 37 weeks'' gestation) showed a high prevalence of underlying renal disease. Renal abnormalities were found in 33 of the 49 primiparas (67%) and in 22 of the 35 multiparas (63%). Two thirds of the multiparas with pre-eclampsia before 37 weeks with a diagnosis of either essential hypertension or renal disease had recurrent pre-eclampsia. Maternal morbidity and fetal mortality were greater in the group with early onset pre-eclampsia than in a group with late onset disease. Idiopathic pre-eclampsia occurred in 10% of primiparas in the early onset group, whereas it was the main condition in over three quarters of primiparas in the late onset group. A presumptive diagnosis of idiopathic pre-eclampsia is likely to be correct only in primiparas who develop the disease after 37 weeks of pregnancy; in all other cases careful search will almost certainly detect an underlying abnormality, predominantly renal.     

HGM: a call for model validation

The hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach to wetland functional assessment has been in place for more than 20 years, yet most models developed to date have not been validated. Although HGM models are typically calibrated to a data set, we lack true validation efforts, especially as wetland scientists and managers continue to assert that measuring structure equates to an assessment of function. This paper is a call for a renewed effort at HGM validation in order to fully assure that we know when structure is measured we are also measuring function.     

Early onset of regionalization in EMS lineage of C. elegans embryo: a quantitative study

Early localization of C. elegans founder cell descendents in certain regions of embryo has been documented. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the onset of ABp and EMS descendent cell regionalization in the embryo using the random motility coefficient as a quantitative parameter. The forward migration index (FMI) was also calculated in order to evaluate the chemotatic biases of ABp-dc and EMS-dc during regionalization.

The results showed that the random motility coefficient declined as the cells tended to regionalize. The mean squared displacement (MSD) versus time plot showed a non-linear model which indicated non-random cell movement. FMI showed progressive increase as the cells tended to regionalized, and it was significantly higher in EMS-dc than ABp-dc, moreover the chemotatic biases were higher in EMS-dc than ABp-dc.

The circular plots showed that the statistical differences between the two lineages were significant, while ABp-dc showed significant differences in xy, xz and yz planes; EMS derived cells showed no significant differences except in yz planes. The conclusion of this study is that the onset of early regionalization occurs in EMS-dc sooner than in ABp-dc.     

Community outreach: a call for cultural change

The author proposes a cultural shift within biomedical research, suggesting that scientists should view the use of any animal as a privilege only to be used under careful scrutiny and after a thorough search for alternatives. He further suggests that the IACUC can be a vehicle for such a change.     

Trophic indicators in fisheries: a call for re-evaluation

Mean trophic level (MTL) of landings and primary production required (PPR) by fisheries are increasingly used in the assessment of sustainability in fisheries. However, in their present form, MTL and PPR are prone to misinterpretation. We show that it is important to account for actual catch data, define an appropriate historical and spatial domain, and carefully consider the effects of fisheries management, based on results from a case study of Swedish fisheries during the past century.     

White blood cell differential: a call for standards

The technology available to count and classify white blood cells has rapidly evolved from 1974 to the present. Two previous conferences, the College of American Pathologists Aspen Conference (1977) and Blood Cells in Paris (1980) have considered the technical and medical questions raised by these new technologies. The National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) met in November 1984 to continue this debate and to provide a forum for manufacturers, laboratory directors, and government regulatory agencies to establish standards for the performance of the white blood cell differential. The development and clinical evaluation of the current commercially available white cell differential counters is reviewed as background for this meeting.     

Early onset of puberty: tracking genetic and environmental factors

Under physiological conditions, factors affecting the genetic control of hypothalamic functions are predominant in determining the individual variations in timing of pubertal onset. In pathological conditions, however, these variations can involve different genetic susceptibility and the interaction of environmental factors. The high incidence of precocious puberty in foreign children migrating to Belgium and the detection in their plasma of a long-lasting 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT) residue suggest the potential role of environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals in the early onset of puberty. This hypothesis was confirmed by experimental data showing that temporary exposure of immature female rats to DDT in vivo results in early onset of puberty. We compared the gene expression profile of hypothalamic hamartoma associated or not with precocious puberty in order to identify gene networks responsible for both hamartoma-dependent sexual precocity and the onset of normal human puberty. In conclusion, pathological variations in the timing of puberty may provide unique information about the interactions of either environmental conditions or genetic susceptibility with the hypothalamic mechanism controlling the onset of sexual maturation, as shown by examples of precocious puberty following exposure to endocrine disrupters or due to hypothalamic hamartoma.
