The giant clam subfamily Tridacninae (family Cardiidae) is an important group of bivalve molluscs found throughout the Red Sea and Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to the Eastern Pacific biogeographic region. The Tridacna genus is currently revised with numerous cryptic species identified with molecular markers. New Tridacna records from the fringe of the known distribution areas are extremely useful to identify genetically unique species, geographic ranges, and to examine processes associated with species differentiation. While Tridacna maxima is abundant in French Polynesia (Central South Pacific Ocean) the larger fluted giant clam Tridacna squamosa was formerly reported only in the Austral Islands in the south. Following a recent survey that spanned 23 islands and atolls of the Society, Tuamotu and Gambier Archipelagos, the presence of T. squamosa between the Cook Islands and Pitcairn Islands is confirmed using both morphological and molecular information, suggesting a relic distribution across the Central Pacific Ocean. Tridacna squamosa is rare, but present throughout Tuamotu and Gambier. However, it remained undetected from the Society Islands, probably due to historical over-fishing. This species is valued by local inhabitants, and is sought after mainly as gifts and also for a limited local shell trade. The rarity of T. squamosa may call for conservation measures in the near future.  相似文献

Giant clams (Tridacninae) are important members of Indo‐Pacific coral reefs and among the few bivalve groups that live in symbiosis with unicellular algae (Symbiodiniaceae). Despite the importance of these endosymbiotic dinoflagellates for clam ecology, the diversity and specificity of these associations remain relatively poorly studied, especially in the Red Sea. Here, we used the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) rDNA gene region to investigate Symbiodiniaceae communities associated with Red Sea Tridacna maxima clams. We sampled five sites spanning 1,300 km (10° of latitude, from the Gulf of Aqaba, 29°N, to the Farasan Banks, 18°N) along the Red Sea''s North‐South environmental gradient. We detected a diverse and structured assembly of host‐associated algae with communities demonstrating region and site‐specificity. Specimens from the Gulf of Aqaba harbored three genera of Symbiodiniaceae, Cladocopium, Durusdinium, and Symbiodinium, while at all other sites clams associated exclusively with algae from the Symbiodinium genus. Of these exclusively Symbiodinium‐associating sites, the more northern (27° and 22°) and more southern sites (20° and 18°) formed two separate groupings despite site‐specific algal genotypes being resolved at each site. These groupings were congruent with the genetic break seen across multiple marine taxa in the Red Sea at approximately 19°, and along with our documented site‐specificity of algal communities, contrasted the panmictic distribution of the T. maxima host. As such, our findings indicate flexibility in T. maxima‐Symbiodiniaceae associations that may explain its relatively high environmental plasticity and offers a mechanism for environmental niche adaptation.  相似文献

Information on spatial variability and distribution patterns of organisms in coral reef environments is necessary to evaluate the increasing anthropogenic disturbance of marine environments (Richmond 1993; Wilkinson 1993; Dayton 1994). Therefore different types of subtidal, reef-associated hard substrata (reef flats, reef slopes, coral carpets, coral patches, rock grounds), each with different coral associations, were investigated to determine the distribution pattern of molluscs and their life habits (feeding strategies and substrate relations). The molluscs were strongly dominated by taxa with distinct relations to corals, and five assemblages were differentiated. The Dendropoma maxima assemblage on reef flats is a discrete entity, strongly dominated by this encrusting and suspension-feeding gastropod. All other assemblages are arranged along a substrate gradient of changing coral associations and potential molluscan habitats. The Coralliophila neritoidea-Barbatia foliata assemblage depends on the presence of Porites and shows a dominance of gastropods feeding on corals and of bivalves associated with living corals. The Chamoidea-Cerithium spp. assemblage on rock grounds is strongly dominated by encrusting bivalves. The Drupella cornus-Pteriidae assemblage occurs on Millepora-Acropora reef slopes and is strongly dominated by bivalves associated with living corals. The Barbatia setigera-Ctenoides annulata assemblage includes a broad variety of taxa, molluscan life habits and bottom types, but occurs mainly on faviid carpets and is transitional among the other three assemblages. A predicted degradation of coral coverage to rock bottoms due to increasing eutrophication and physical damage in the study area (Riegl and Piller 2000) will result in a loss of coral-associated molluscs in favor of bivalve crevice dwellers in dead coral heads and of encrusters on dead hard substrata.  相似文献

Summary The fossil record of coral and boring mytilid bivalves IS investigated. Middle Miocene associations from Austria, Hungary, and Turkey are described. As host corals,Montastrea, Porites, Siderastrea, Solenastrea, andTarbellastraea can be noted. Eocene (Waschberg Zone) and Upper Cretaceous (Gosau Formation) examples are presented from Austria only. As host corals,Favia andMontastrea, respectivelyAstrocoenia and an unidentified branching coral are recorded. The associated bivalve species are all mytilidLithophaga, includingL. laevigata (Quoy & Gaimard) inTarbellastraea, a new Middle Miocene species inMontastrea, andL. alpina (Zittel) inAstrocoenia, the latter two from Styria, Austria. Thecharacteristic features of the coral-bivalve relationships include (in massive corals): Boreholes more or less in the direction of coral growth, radially arranged, elongate boreholes, produced by keeping pace with coral growth. Bivalves were not only present near the surface, but deep inside the skeleton, representing successive generations in the same host colony. After the death of borers, their tunnels were closed by coral overgrowth. Cup-shaped false floors in the boreholes are correlated to reduced coral growth, indicating individual longevity of bivalves. The spacing of the floors mirrors the growth rate of the host coral (like its density bands), their number representing the minimal age of the respective bivalve. In branching corals, boreholes of the associated smallsizedLithophaga tended to turn into the axes of branchlets, when space was limited. Elongated boreholes and false floors were usually not developed, as bivalve growth obviously exceeded lateral growth of branchlets and specimens were rather short-lived. References to probable associations of coral and mytilid boring bivalves are given. It is quite likely that they have occurred since Jurassic times and probably since the Upper Triassic. So far, they have been ascertained since the Upper Cretaceous in massive and branching corals.  相似文献

Summary The Upper Rhaetian coral limestone of Adnet, southeast of Salzburg Austria has been repeatedly referred to as one of the most spectacular examples of an ancient ‘autochthonous’ coral reef structure. The ‘Tropfbruch’ quarry is probably the best outcrop for interpreting the distributional patterns of biotic successions and communities of a late Triassic patch reef. Our study is based on the interpretation of a) outcrop photographs, b) reef maps resulting from quadrat transects, and c) the analysis of quantitative data describing the distribution and frequency of reef organisms and sediment. A new methodological approach (combination of reef mapping and photo-transects) is used to obtain quantitative field data which can be compared in greater detail with data from modern coral reefs investigated by corresponding quantitative surveys. Three unconformities and three well-defined ‘reef growth stages’ reflecting the vertical and lateral development of the reef structure were differrentiated using transects: Stage 1, representing the reef growth optimum, is characterized by laterally differentiated coral reef knobs with corals in growth position. Criteria supporting this interpretation are the extraordinary size of the corals, their preservation in situ and the great thickness of this interval. The massive coralPamiroseris grew under higher energy conditions at the rim of the reef knob, whereas branchingRetiophyllia colonies preferred less agitated water in the center. Vertical changes are reflected by an increase in frequency of the dasycladacean algaDiplopora adnetensis and by the decreasing size ofRetiophyllia. These sedimentological and biological criteria together with the unconformity above indicate a fall in the sea level as a major control mechanism. Stage 2, separated from stage 1 by an unconformity caused by partial subaerial exposure and karstification, is characterized by vertically stacked coral successions with diverse reef debris. Facies heterogeneity is reflected by differences in the diversity, taphonomy and packing density of reef-building organisms as well as by differences in sediment input from the platform. Water depths and accommodation space were lower, therefore minor sea level fluctuations had a stronger effect on the biotic composition. The high percentage of coral debris and corals reworked by storms and the increase in the input of platform sediment led to a reduction of reef growth. Stage 3, again separated at the base by an unconformity associated with karstification, is characterized by bioclastic sediments with isolated reefbuilders forming a level-bottom community. The distribution of different coral morphotypes suggests that sea level fluctuations were not the only controlling factor. Variations in the substrate were caused by differences in the input of platform sediment. The three-step development seen in Adnet documents the response of low-diverse coral associations to variations caused by small-scale sea level changes, storm activity and sedimentation. The vertical changes in reef community structures correspond to a sequence of ‘allogenic replacements’. The Adnet reef structure should not be regarded as a general model of Alpine Upper Rhaetian reefs, because of the particular setting of the patch reef. Only the ‘capping beds’ of the Upper Rhaetian Reef Limestone of the Steinplatte exhibit criteria similar to Adnet. Potential modern analogues of features seen in the coral communities of Adnet are the internal structure of theRetiophyllia thickets, the key role of branching corals within the communities, the scattered distribution and low and even diversity of corals subsequent to breaks in settlement, segration patterns of corals indicating ‘contact avoidance’, toppling of large coral colonies by intensive boring, and decreasing coral coverage from deeper and sheltered settings to more shallower water depths.  相似文献

 The role of dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) in nitrogen and energy budgets was investigated for the giant clam, Tridacna maxima, growing under field conditions at One Tree Island, at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Giant clams (121.5–143.7 mm in shell length) took up neutral, acidic and basic amino acids. The rates of net uptake of DFAA did not differ between light and dark, nor for clams growing under normal or slightly enriched ammonium concentrations. Calculations based on the net uptake concentrations typical of the maximum concentrations of DFAA found in coral reef waters (∼0.1 μM ) revealed that DFAA could only contribute 0.1% and 1% of the energy and nitrogen demands of giant clams, respectively. These results suggest that DFAA does not supply significant amounts of energy or nitrogen for giant clams or their symbionts. Accepted: 7 October 1998  相似文献

Summary In a fringing reef at Aqaba at the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba (29°26′N) growth rates, density, and the calcification rate ofPorites were investigated in order to establish calculations of gross carbonate production for the reefs in this area. Colony accretion ofPorites decreases with depth as a function of decreasing growth rates. The calcification rate ofPorites is highest in shallow water (0–5 m depth) with 0.9 g·cm−2·yr−1 and falls down to 0.5 g·cm−2·yr−1 below 30 m. Scleractinian coral gross production is calculated from potential productivity and coral coverage. It is mainly dependent on living coral cover and to a lesser extent on potential productivity. Total carbonate production on the reef ranged from 0 to 2.7 kg/m2 per year, with a reef-wide average of 1.6 kg/m2 perycar. Maximum gross carbonate production by corals at Aqaba occurs at the reef crest and in the middle fore-reef from 10 to 15 m water depth. Production is low in sandy reef parts. Below 30 m depth values still reach ca. 50% of shallow water values. Mean potential production of colonies and gross carbonate production of the whole reef community at Aqaba is lower than in tropical reefs. However, carbonate production is higher than in reef areas at the same latitude in the Pacific, indicating a northward shift of reef production in the Red Sea.  相似文献

Summary The shallow marine subtropical Northern Bay of Safaga is composed of a complex pattern of sedimentary facies that are generally rich in molluscs. Thirteen divertaken bulk-samples from various sites (reef slopes, sand between coral patches, muddy sand, mud, sandy seagrass, muddy seagrass, mangrove channel) at water depths ranging from shallow subtidal to 40m were investigated with regard to their mollusc fauna >1mm, which was separated into fragments and whole individuals. Fragments make up more than 88% of the total mollusc remains of the samples, and their proportions correspond to characteristics of the sedimentary facies. The whole individuals were differentiated into 622 taxa. The most common taxon,Rissoina cerithiiformis, represented more than 5% of the total mollusc content in the samples. The main part of the fauna consists of micromolluscs, including both small adults and juveniles. Based on the results of cluster-, correspondence-, and factor analyses the fauna was grouped into several associations, each characterizing a sedimentary facies: (1) “Rhinoclavis sordidula—Corbula erythraeensis-Pseudominolia nedyma association” characterizes mud. (2) “Microcirce sp.—Leptomyaria sp. association” characterizes muddy sand. (3)”Smaragdia spp.-Perrinia stellata—Anachis exilis—assemblage” characterizes sandy seagrass. (4) “Crenella striatissima—Rastafaria calypso—Cardiates-assemblage” characterizes muddy seagrass. (5) “Glycymeris spp.-Parvicardium sueziensis-Diala spp.-assemblage” characterizes sand between coral patches. (6) “Rissoina spp.-Triphoridae —Ostreoidea-assemblage” characterizes reef slopes. (7) “Potamides conicus—Siphonaria sp. 2—assemblage” characterizes the mangrove. The seagrass fauna is related to those of sand between coral patches and reef slopes with respect to gastropod assemblages, numbers of taxa and diversity indices, and to the muddy sand fauna on the basis of bivalve assemblages and feeding strategies of bivalves. The mangrove assemblage is related to those of sand between coral patches and the reef slope with respect to taxonomic composition and feeding strategies of bivalves, but has a strong relationship to those of the fine-grained sediments when considering diversity indices. Reef slope assemblages are closely related to that of sand between coral patches in all respects, except life habits of bivalves, which distincly separates the reef slope facies from all others.  相似文献

A new species of giant clam from northern Australian coastal waters is distinguished principally on genetic evidence. Of Recent tridacnids, Tridacna ningaloo n. sp. is morphologically closest to the most widespread species in the Indo-Pacific, Tridacna maxima (Röding, 1798), yet genetically closest to the species pair T. squamosa Lamarck, 1819 plus T. crocea Lamarck, 1819. Genotype data are provided for the type material of T. ningaloo n. sp. The greatest significance of this new, cryptic species is that it casts doubt on the correctness of the ‘historical’ giant clam species defined solely on conchological characters, particularly T. maxima. This paper supports the retention of all giant clams in the family Tridacnidae, as distinct from the Cardiidae, because of their numerous morphological apomorphies, specialised ecological niche, and independent acquisition of symbiotic zooxanthellae.  相似文献

The giant clam species Tridacna crocea, T. deresa, T. gigas, T. maxima and Hippopus hippopus are known to exhibit squirting behaviour, ejecting a stream of water either from their exhalant or inhalant siphon. Here, for the first time, squirting in juvenile fluted giant clams, T. squamosa, was measured. By analysing stills from video recordings it was possible to determine the horizontal and vertical distances travelled by each squirt above the water line, the cross-sectional area of the water jet, and the angle of squirt perpendicular to the horizontal axis of the giant clam. The weight of each “aerial squirt” was measured by collecting the displaced water. Using these parameters, the initial velocity, force and pressure exerted by each squirt on an object was calculated. Strong positive correlations were observed between shell length and weight of seawater and force exerted by aerial squirts. We also modelled the pressures that would be experienced by underwater targets. The simulated “underwater squirts” indicate the pressure produced rapidly decreases with distance from the clam.  相似文献

An arabinogalactan protein from the style canal of Gladiolus has been isolated by a one-step procedure involving lectin affinity chromatography, using the galactose-binding lectin from the small giant clam, Tridacna maxima, coupled to Sepharose 4B. The lectin binding is calcium-ion dependent, so that the arabinogalactan protein which is bound to the column in the presence of calcium can be eluted by washing the column with a calcium-free buffer. This method has a general utility for the purification of polysaccharides and glycoproteins containing β-linked galactosyl residues.  相似文献

Giant clams (genus Tridacna) are iconic coral reef animals of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, easily recognizable by their massive shells and vibrantly colored mantle tissue. Most Tridacna species are listed by CITES and the IUCN Redlist, as their populations have been extensively harvested and depleted in many regions. Here, we survey Tridacna crocea and Tridacna maxima from the eastern Indian and western Pacific Oceans for mitochondrial (COI and 16S) and nuclear (ITS) sequence variation and consolidate these data with previous published results using phylogenetic analyses. We find deep intraspecific differentiation within both T. crocea and T. maxima. In T. crocea we describe a previously undocumented phylogeographic division to the east of Cenderawasih Bay (northwest New Guinea), whereas for T. maxima the previously described, distinctive lineage of Cenderawasih Bay can be seen to also typify western Pacific populations. Furthermore, we find an undescribed, monophyletic group that is evolutionarily distinct from named Tridacna species at both mitochondrial and nuclear loci. This cryptic taxon is geographically widespread with a range extent that minimally includes much of the central Indo-Pacific region. Our results reinforce the emerging paradigm that cryptic species are common among marine invertebrates, even for conspicuous and culturally significant taxa. Additionally, our results add to identified locations of genetic differentiation across the central Indo-Pacific and highlight how phylogeographic patterns may differ even between closely related and co-distributed species.  相似文献

To explore the feasability of larch (Larix decidua Mill.) embryogenic cell culture as alternative plant expression system, protein stability in fresh and conditioned medium was characterized in this study and compared to tobacco BY2 suspension culture. Fresh and conditioned media were spiked with 1 μg human IgG and IgG content was determined by ELISA after 24 h incubation. In fresh media, IgG recovery rate decreased to 12–23%. Adsorption on vessel walls probably is the best explanation for this IgG loss and EDTA in the medium strongly influenced wall adsorption. A high IgG recovery rate occurred in all conditioned cell culture media (7 or 14 days after inoculation). Changes in the low molecular weight-constitution of conditioned medium, rather than co-secreted polymers, are responsible for IgG stability in the cell suspension cultures.  相似文献

Summary Coral assemblages in northern Safaga Bay, Red Sea, Egypt, are qualitatively described. Nine distinct assemblages were found, which correspond to quantitatively defined community types previously described from the area off Hurghada, northern Red Sea. Their distribution within northern Safaga Bay was mapped. Strong gradient and/or steep relief assemblages were:Acropora assemblage on windward (exposed) reefs,Porites assemblage on leeward (sheltered) reefs,Millepora assemblage on current exposed reefs,Stylophora assemblage on reef flats. Low gradient and/or low relief assemblages were:Acropora dominated coral patches in areas of good circulation to a depth of 15 m,Stylophora/Acropora coral patch assemblages in shallow sheltered environments, faviid carpet in low relief areas between 10 and 25 m which with increasing turbidity turns into a depauperate faviid carpet,Porites carpet in low relief areas between 5 and 15 m with clearest water,Sarcophyton carpet in low relief areas with high suspension load, platy scleractinian assemblage in deeper water (>25 m) with low light intensity. Summary Experiments conducted on rocky bottoms at 7–11 m depth in the San Juan Archipelago, Washington assessed effects of canopies of understory kelps on growth of benthic suspension feeders, determined the mechanisms responsible for effects, and assessed the influence of kelp canopies on survivorship of benthic fauna. Kelp canopics influenced growth rates of diverse suspension feeders. At several sites the musselMytilus edulis, the barnacleBalanus glandula, and the serpulid polychaetePseudochitinopoma occidentalis grew faster on the bottom beneath kelp canopies than on nearby exposed substrata. The cheilostome bryozoanMembranipora membranacea showed a mixed response to kelp canopies, growing faster in exposed regions at one site, but faster beneath canopies at another. There were no differences in growth of 2 other species (the cheilostome bryozoanCheilopora praelonga and the spongeMyxilla incrustans) between kelp and no-kelp treatments; however, some processes influenced by plant canopies affected their growth. Specific mechanisms responsible for kelp effects on growth were assessed in a series of field experiments usingPseudochitinopoma, Membranipora, Cheilopora andMyxilla. Particulate deposition on the bottom, which is more intense beneath canopies, negatively affected growth of all 4 species. Kelps also reduced rates of flow and prevented devented development of microalgal turfs beneath the canopy.Pseudochitinopoma grew faster in the weaker flows below canopies and bothCheilopora andMyxilla grew faster where there were no microalgal turfs. These other effects of kelp canopies were at least as important to growth (in the cases ofCheilopora andMyxilla) or more important to growth (in the case ofPseudochitinopoma) than were the general, deleterious effects of higher sedimentation beneath canopies. The lower growth rates caused by higher sedimentation beneath kelp canopies did not result in higher rates of animal mortality. Surprisingly, kelp canopies typically did not influence mortality due to predation. For 7 of 12 taxa, mortality rates did not differ between kelp-covered and exposed treatments. Significantly higher mortality occurred outside canopies for only 4 of 12 taxa, and for at least 2 of these 4 differences probably were not related to predation.Mytilus, a species rare at these depths, exhibited higher mortality beneath kelp canopies due to predation by crabs. Other macrophytes in fresh and salt water, as well as some benthic animals that create complex, 3-dimensional habitats, should influence benthic organisms and assemblages in ways analogous to the kelps acting through their effects on flow, particle transport, and shading.  相似文献

Increasing sediment onto coral reefs has been identified as a major source of habitat degradation, and yet little is known about how it affects reef fishes. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that sediment-enriched water impairs the ability of larval damselfish to find suitable settlement sites. At three different experimental concentrations of suspended sediment (45, 90, and 180 mg l−1), pre-settlement individuals of two species (Pomacentrus amboinensis and P. moluccensis) were not able to select their preferred habitat. In a clear water environment (no suspended sediment), both species exhibit a strong preference for live coral over partially dead and dead coral, choosing live coral 70 and 80% of the time, respectively. However, when exposed to suspended sediment, no habitat choice was observed, with individuals of both species settling on live coral, partially dead, and dead coral, at the same frequency. To determine a potential mechanism underlying these results, we tested chemosensory discrimination in sediment-enriched water. We demonstrated that sediment disrupts the ability of this species to respond to chemical cues from different substrata. That is, individuals of P. moluccensis prefer live coral to dead coral in clear water, but in sediment-enriched water, chemical cues from live and dead coral were not distinguished. These results suggest that increasing suspended sediment in coral reef environments may reduce settlement success or survival of coral reef fishes. A sediment-induced disruption of habitat choice may compound the effects of habitat loss on coral reefs.  相似文献

Porites panamensis is a hermatypic brooder coral endemic to, and distributed along, the Eastern Tropical Pacific, and is considered a species vulnerable to local effects because it has limited capacity for long‐distance dispersal (and low genetic diversity). Although larvae of P. panamensis have been previously shown to recruit to artificial settlement platforms, they have never been observed in the water column. The present study describes the reproductive behavior of P. panamensis, with a focus on using molecular tools to document evidence for a larval planktonic stage and for successful recruitment. Larvae collected from the water column, and recruitment on natural and artificial substrata were documented. Phylogenetic analysis of two ribosomal markers, 18s rRNA and ITS (ITS1‐5.8‐ITS2), and one mitochondrial marker, cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1), confirmed the taxonomic identity of larvae, and showed that larvae and recruits have genotypes similar to adults of P. panamensis. Lipid vacuoles and Symbiodinium sp. were present in the gastrodermis of all larvae. A total of 12 and 371 recruits settled on artificial and natural substrates, respectively, and the recruitment rate differed significantly over time. By documenting the reproductive success of the species, we show the potential for existing individuals both to maintain the population in the study area and to contribute to maintenance of the coral reef community in the coming decades.  相似文献

Twenty-four males ofCylindrotettix obscurus and ten ofC. santarosae (Leptysminae, Acrididae) from Rio Claro, Brazil, were cytologically analysed. Both species are 2n = 23 ♂ (22+XO), all chromosomes being telocentric except for 4 acrocentric pairs ofC. obscurus. Two different B-chromosomes were found inC. obscurus: (1) a small, mitotically unstable telocentric (BT) and (2) a medium-sized, mitotically stable submetacentric (B1). B1 has a large pericentromeric heterochromatic portion and two distal euchromatic segments where both terminal associations and interstitial chiasmata are regularly formed producing a ring univalent at prophase I. B1 is almost certainly an iso-chromosome which has undergone a centromeric shift through pericentric inversion or centric transposition (heterochromatin duplication or deletion could also be the cause of arm inequality). InC. santarosae, a single male carried a small mitotically stable telocentric B-chromosome. Both B types ofC. obscurus significantly increased the production of abnormal sperm (diploid, tetraploid and micro-spermatids) when compared to 0B individuals although their effects were differential: BT induced higher frequencies of microspermatids especially in those follicles with odd BT numbers, while in B1 carriers the increase was chiefly due to polyploid spermatids. None of the Bs ofC. obscurus affected cell mean chiasma frequency nor the between-cell variance. The B ofC. santarosae had no effect on abnormal sperm production but it probably increased cell mean chiasma frequency.  相似文献

Nutrition of coral reef fish closely associated with the colonies of scleractinian corals Acropora spp. (South China Sea, Gulf of Nha Trang) was investigated. Parabionts Dascyllus reticulatus and Chromis caeruleus (Pomacentridae) feed mainly on zooplankton in the water column above the hosts’ colony, and inbionts Gobiodon quinquestrgatus (Gobiidae) rarely leave a host colony and feed generally on coral reef invertebrates. A high part of secondary nutrition objects (on average 19–29%) that indicates deficiency in main food were noted in both categories of fish. Food of all three fish species contains parasites (from 19% in C. caeruleus and up to 25% in G. quinquestrigatus) whose significant part is represented by parasites of coral (approximately 7% in D. reticulatus and C. caeruleus and 15% in G. quinquestrigatus). In addition, larvae of parasites of Isopoda and Facetotecta that are fed by fish in the water column were found. Mucus from the surface of host coral which was recognized on the basis of a high number of nematocysts in fish stomachs was found in food of G. quinquestrigatus for the first time. Positive and negative effects of symbiosis of fish and host-coral were discussed. A commensal character of symbiosis was supposed.  相似文献
