The morphology of the peroneus longus muscle was compared in three Galliformes and five Passeriformes in relation to partial behavioral characteristics. In the quail two fibre types are found, while the muscle of the other species is composed of three fibre types. The frequencies of these fibres are different, especially between Galliformes and Passeriformes. The peroneus longus muscle in the quail is innervated only from the phasic system. The other species show phasic and tonic innervation. There is a correlation between the muscle fibre calibre and the extent of the synaptic gutter.  相似文献

The distribution of succinic dehydrogenase activity was investigated in the pectoralis muscle of thirteen East African birds, representing five Orders. It was found that the pectoralis muscle of the most primitive birds studied (Galliformes) contained all “white” muscle fibres whereas the more advanced birds (Passeriformes) had all “red” muscle fibres. Intermediate Orders had mostly a mixture of red and white muscle fibres. There also appeared to be a direct relationship between body size and average muscle fibre size. However, it was concluded that the most important factor in relation to the muscle structure is the bird's mode of flight. The relationship with the degree of evolution and body size only held true in so far as the birds which had developed the facility for sustained flight, by increasing their red muscle fibre content, were also smaller in size and constituted the more “evolved” Orders of birds. In support of this it was noted that migratory birds (i.e. engaging in sustained flight) from more primitive Orders also had a high red muscle fibre content in their pectoralis muscles.  相似文献

The vascular bed of the locomotor muscle in three shark species and in a holocephalan is investigated and the capillarization quantified by morphometrical methods. The red muscle fibres of Scyliorhinus, Galeus, Etmopterus and Chimaera are well vascularized having respectively 25, 18, 23 and 5 per cent of fibre surface covered by capillaries. The white muscle fibres of Scyliorhinus are far better vascularized than white muscle fibres of Galeus, Etmopterus and Chimaera . The fibre surface covered by capillaries are 9, 1.4, 0.2 and 1.3 per cent, respectively. The intermediate muscle fibres have a vascular supply between that of red and white muscle fibres in all species. If the capillary contact area to the fibres are related to the mitochondrial volume, more similar values are obtained for the vascular supply to all fibres types in all animals. This parameter indicates that there is a definite relation between the capacity of the oxygen transport system and the aerobic metabolic machinery.  相似文献

It is commonly acknowledged that the basal divergence among extant birds is between Palaeognathae and Neognathae. However, recent analyses of mitochondrial sequences have challenged that notion. In order to investigate this fundamental phylogenetic question, the complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecule of the rook Corvus frugilegus (Passeriformes) was sequenced and included in phylogenetic analyses with the previously reported complete mtDNAs of the chicken Gallus gallus (Galliformes) and two ratite species, the ostrich Struthio camelus and the rhea Rhea americana (Struthioniformes). The analyses reconstructed a split between Passeriformes and a branch including Galliformes and Struthioniformes. Thus, the result is inconsistent with the traditional understanding of a basal avian divergence between Palaeognathae and Neognathae. The findings suggest that the morphological characteristics of the ratites are secondarily acquired, probably through neoteny and that the ratites are descendants of flying, neognathous ancestors.  相似文献

The life cycle of an avian Sarcocystis has been completed in the laboratory, originating with naturally infected icterids and passing alternately between opossums (Didelphis virginiana) and experimentally infected birds. To determine the intermediate host range, six avian species, including canaries (Serinus canarius), zebra finches (Poephila guttata), budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), pigeons (Columba livia), chickens (Gallus gallus), and guinea fowl (Numida meleagris), were inoculated orally with Sarcocystis sporocysts derived from experimentally infected opossums. All birds but the Galliformes were susceptible to merogony. Pigeons (Columbiformes) were susceptible to early merogony but apparently not to muscle stages. Passeriformes and Psittaciformes were completely susceptible and the parasite developed into muscle cysts in them.  相似文献

Sera from 324 birds collected in an Ockelbo virus disease endemic area in central Sweden were examined for the presence of specific antibodies to Ockelbo virus by a plaque reduction neutralization test. Birds examined belonged to the orders Anseriformes (n = 207), Galliformes (n = 66) and Passeriformes (n = 51). Ockelbo virus neutralizing antibodies were detected in 26 (8%) of the specimens, including species from each of the three orders tested. Specific antibodies found in caged birds and in 6- to 10-week-old birds suggested local transmission. The highest antibody prevalence (27%, 14/51) was observed in the Passeriformes in which 5 of 9 species tested contained antibodies. The high antibody prevalence in passeriforms and the very large population of this group in relation to other avian groups in Sweden gives them a high potential as amplification hosts for Ockelbo virus.  相似文献

Myoglobin content is found to be higher in skeletal than in cardiac muscle of Tursiops truncatus and Phocaena phocaena and much higher than that in skeletal muscles of terrestrial mammals. According to the myoglobin content muscle fibres are devided into five types: red, white and three intermediate types. Deep muscles contain more red fibres and less intermediate fibres than superficial ones. White fibres compose almost one half of all fibres of the superficial skeletal muscles of the dolphins. The role of myoglobin distribution and higher content in oxygen supply of muscular tissue is discussed in relation to the peculiarities of dolphin breathing and blood circulation.  相似文献

Synopsis Based on the results of investigations into the fine structure of red and white muscle of roach, Rutilus rutilus, and chub, Leuciscus cephalus (Sänger et al. 1990), analysis of axial muscle has been extended to include nine other cyprinid species. Quantitative comparisons were made of myofibrils, mitochondria, lipid and sub-sarcolemmal cytoplasm in relation to muscle fibre type and species. A comparison of these variables between the species shows that for red fibres there are significant differences in all measured variables in at least some cases. The most striking difference is in lipid content, with Danube bleak, Chalcalburnus chalcoides mento, having the highest amount. For white fibres, there were significant differences only in intermyofibrillar mitochondria and myofibrils, which were most significant in Danube bleak. As a preliminary study, intermediate, fibres have been examined qualitatively and compared with the other two fibre types using the above mentioned variables. The results allow cyprinids to be arranged according to their scores from the different measurements. These groupings are discussed in relation to the different life-styles of the fish.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to introduce a combined fluorescent staining that clearly demonstrates capillaries and distinguishes them from the basal lamina of muscle fibres in skeletal muscle tissue. The triple staining with CD31, Griffonia (Bandeira) simplicifolia lectin (GSL I) and laminin efficiently distinguishes vascular endothelium from the basal lamina of skeletal muscle fibres in physiological and pathological conditions. The presented triple staining method has several advantages, which facilitate quantitative analysis of the capillary network, and its relation to individual muscle fibres.  相似文献

Autonomic innervation of receptors and muscle fibres in cat skeletal muscle   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Cat hindlimb muscles, deprived of their somatic innervation, have been examined with fluorescence and electron microscopy and in teased, silver preparations; normal diaphragm muscles have been examined with electron microscopy only. An autonomic innervation was found to be supplied to both intra- and extrafusal muscle fibres. It is not present in all muscle spindles and is not supplied at all to tendon organs. Fluorescence microscopy revealed a noradrenergic innervation distributed to extrafusal muscle fibres and some spindles. On the basis of the vesicle content of varicosities the extrafusal innervation was identified as noradrenergic (32 axons traced), and the spindle innervation as involving noradrenergic, cholinergic and non-adrenergic axons (14 traced). Some of the noradrenergic axons that innervate spindles and extrafusal muscle fibres are branches of axons that also innervate blood vessels. We cannot say whether there are any noradrenergic axons that are exclusively distributed to intra- or extrafusal muscle fibres. The varicosities themselves may be in neuroeffective association with striated muscle fibres only, or with both striated fibres and the smooth muscle cells in the walls of blood vessels. The functional implications of this direct autonomic innervation of muscle spindles and skeletal muscle fibres are discussed and past work on the subject is evaluated.  相似文献

Summary Quantitative ultrastructural and physiological parameters were investigated in three types of muscle fibres ofPerca fluviatilis: white fibres from the m. levator operculi anterior, pink (intermediate) fibres of the m. hyohyoideus and deep red fibres of the m. levator operculi anterior. Times to peak tension and half relaxation times of isometric twitches increased in the mentioned order. The extent of contact between the T system and the sarcoplasmic reticulum and the relative volume and surface area of the terminal cisternae showed an inverse relation with the time to peak tension of the twitch. The maximal isometric tetanic force per unit cross section area was similar for all three investigated types. The only avian major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) genes thus far identified are from species of the relatively small order of Galliformes, while by far the largest order of Passeriformes (songbirds), containing some 60% of extant bird species, has not been studied at all in this regard. The Galliformes emerged more than 55 million years (my) ago, the Passeriformes some 25 my ago. Because of the potential for the use of Mhc genes as markers in the study of songbird populations, an attempt was made to clone class II B genes of a passeriform species, the Bangalese finch Lonchura striata acuticauda. Using a set of primers designed on the basis of known sequences, a probe corresponding to part of exon II was obtained by the polymerase chain reaction. The probe was then used to screen a Bengalese finch cDNA library and to isolate and sequence two nearly full-length clones. The sequences reveal the presence of one presumably functional class II B locus in this bird species.  相似文献

Red and white axial muscle fibres from roach and chub were investigated by electron microscopy. Fish from three different localities were compared. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of myofibrils, mitochondria, lipid and subsarcolemmal cytoplasm with regard to muscle fibre type, species, season and habitat were made. Muscle fibre types differ significantly with the exception of the subsarcolemmal cytoplasm in roach. Within-species lipid content of red fibres differs between seasons. However, the most marked effect on red muscle fibres within species and season as regards volume density of lipid and mitochondria can be attributed to the different localities. The results are discussed in relation to mode of life and differences in habitat.  相似文献

The nuclear DNA content was evaluated in 48 species of Neognathae birds belonging to 13 orders, namely Anseriformes, Charadriiformes, Columbiformes, Ciconiiformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Passeriformes, Pelicaniformes, Phoenicopteriformes, Piciformes, Psittaciformes and Strigiformes. The DNA content, expressed in pg/nucleus, ranges from 2.81 to 4.97. The genome size variability within and among families is discussed on the basis of the Hinegardner's (1976) model of genome evolution.  相似文献

Summary The arrangement of preterminal and terminal axon branches in the primary sensory endings of cat tenuissimus muscle spindles was studied using whole-mount and serial-section techniques. Although in every case one firstorder preterminal branch was supplied exclusively to the bag1 type of intrafusal muscle fibre, the preterminal branching patterns differed considerably in detail.Terminals varied widely in size and location. Their precise form varied according to their position on the intrafusal muscle fibres rather than their relationship to preterminal branches. Terminals derived from separate preterminal branches remained separate and did not fuse with themselves or each other. Individually bag1 fibres had most terminals, chain fibres least. The surface of the muscle fibres were differentially indented by the terminals, least in bag1 fibres and most in chain fibres.The results are discussed in relation to mechanosensory transduction and to the factors involved in determining the form of the primary ending.  相似文献

The M. pectoralis (pars thoracicus) of pigeons (Columba livia) is comprised of short muscle fibres that do not extend from muscle origin to insertion but overlap ''in-series''. Individual pectoralis motor units are limited in territory to a portion of muscle length and are comprised of either fast twitch, oxidative and glycolytic fibres (FOG) or fast twitch and glycolytic fibres (FG). FOG fibres make up 88 to 90% of the total muscle population and have a mean diameter one-half of that of the relatively large FG fibres. Here we report on the organization of individual fibres identified in six muscle units depleted of glycogen, three comprised of FOG fibres and three comprised of FG fibres. For each motor unit, fibre counts revealed unequal numbers of depleted fibres in different unit cross-sections. We traced individual fibres in one unit comprised of FOG fibres and a second comprised of FG fibres. Six fibres from a FOG unit (total length 15.45 mm) ranged from 10.11 to 11.82 mm in length and averaged (± s.d.) 10.74 ± 0.79 mm. All originated bluntly (en mass) from a fascicle near the proximal end of the muscle unit and all terminated intramuscularly. Five of these ended in a taper and one ended bluntly. Fibres coursed on average for 70% of the muscle unit length. Six fibres from a FG unit (total length 34.76 mm) ranged from 8.97 to 18.38 mm in length and averaged 15.32 ± 3.75 mm. All originated bluntly and terminated intramuscularly; one of these ended in a taper and five ended bluntly. Fibres coursed on average for 44% of the muscle unit length. Because fibres of individual muscle units do not extend the whole muscle unit territory, the effective cross-sectional area changes along the motor unit length. These non-uniformities in the distribution of fibres within a muscle unit emphasize that the functional interactions within and between motor units are complex.  相似文献

Four muscle fibre types are described in the biceps and extensor digitorum communis muscles of the newt forelimb. The histological criteria forming the basis for the distinctions include differential staining with p-phenylenediamine and succinate dehydrogenase histochemistry and electron microscopy. In addition, three distinctive motor unit types are described for the biceps muscle. These are fast units, slow units and intermediate units. The structure of muscle fibre and the physiological characteristics of muscle fibres belonging to each motor unit, have been correlated by using iontophoretic passage of Lucifer yellow into muscle fibres belonging to physiologically characterized motor units and their subsequent histological identification by the succinate dehydrogenase reaction. The three motor unit types correspond to slow muscle fibres, intermediate muscle fibres and two classes of fast muscle fibres.  相似文献

This work describes the origin and development of about 200 tension receptor cells located around the anterior attachment site of the locust ovipositor muscle and their migration to their final position on the muscle fibres. The locust ovipositor muscle is the only insect system in which more than 100 tension receptor cells are associated with a single muscle. Neuronal precursors of tension receptors are first detectable by horseradish peroxidase immunohistochemistry in fourth instar larvae. Precursors consist of cell clusters (doublets, triplets and quadruplets) located on the anterior attachment site of the muscle. In the early fifth larval stage, cell clusters are absent, although a few sensory neurons that lie embedded between the muscle fibres are apparent. These neurons send their dendrites towards the anterior end of the muscle fibres and their axons posteriorly. By the fourth day of the fifth larval stage, a large number of cell clusters appears on the anterior muscle attachment site. In addition to these assemblies, cells have been identified that extend long processes running exactly along the lateral margin of the attachment site. These cells are thought to provide navigating cues for migrating tension receptors, since they are absent in later stages. By the end of the fifth larval stage, most of the clusters gradually disappear and increasing numbers of differentiated neurons embedded between the muscle fibres become visible. We conclude that the majority of tension receptors develop during the last larval stage from precursors situated on the muscle apodeme. They then migrate from the apodeme to their final place on the muscle fibres where they assume an appropriate orientation.  相似文献

Experimental data indicate the existence of a matching between many motoneurone characteristics and those of the corresponding innervated muscle fibres. This association between the properties of motoneurones and muscle fibres is quite important for the adequate and efficient functioning of the motor system. We present a view of motoneurones and muscle fibres as encoders and decoders of signals. An analysis of some of the encoding/decoding relations performed by motoneurones and muscle fibres in functionally relevant situations indicates that they are optimal and we indicate in the paper what performance measures are optimised. Besides its relevance in the study of motor control, the encoding/decoding framework should also be useful in the task of model validation.  相似文献
