Acoustic methods were used to study Atlantic redfishes Sebastes spp. vertical migration and shoaling behaviour in Newfoundland waters. Redfishes exhibited consistent patterns of vertical migration in winter, spring and summer, but pelagic shoals were not observed in winter. Pelagic daytime aggregations were generally in close proximity to dense patches of redfishes along the sea floor. Pelagic shoals exhibited high degrees of variability in size, shape and density. Attempts to explain variations in shoal density and area with features of shoal position and structure were unsuccessful. Nearest neighbour distance between fish in shoals had a lower limit near one body length. During the night, fishes were dispersed in the water column and distributions were more homogenous. Diel vertical migration appeared to be a foraging strategy, in which redfishes followed the migration of their euphausiid prey. 相似文献

During the night anchovies were observed in the deep offshore oceanic and intermediate slope zones off the Baja California coast, Mexico, in high abundance. Anchovies moved towards the shallow inshore neritic zone in low density groups, returning at dawn to deeper depth strata. During the day, abundances were reduced drastically and those observed were forming compact and discrete schools at deeper depth strata. Anchovy and euphausiid abundance, as recorded by the echosounder, Were positively correlated. 相似文献

Like mono-species fish groups, formation of mixed-species assemblages is likely driven by trophic influences and interspecific behavioural traits. Our aim was to identify how sympatric estuarine species of differing phenotypes form mixed-species group associations, and to identify changes to group structure of fish that migrate between mono- and mixed-species groups. We used sympatric yellow-eyed mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri), kahawai (Arripis trutta), and Australian snapper (Chrysophrys auratus), representing different phenotypes for the mixed-species group, and yellow-eyed mullet for the mono- and mixed-species comparison. Group formation and structure was quantified in predator and foraging treatment groups. We used previous research in mono-species yellow-eyed mullet to compare behavioural plasticity with the current study. Our novel results suggest similar behavioural traits in mono- and mixed-species fish groups have beneficially co-evolved and importantly, behavioural plasticity is necessary for migration between groups. Overall, our observations highlight key behavioural responses associated with mixed-species fish formations in estuarine ecosystems. 相似文献

Although the total migratory activity of fishes from floodplain lakes in the Lower Rhine (Germany) into the connected drainage channels, estimated using electrofishing, fyke nets and visual observations, was low during summer 1997, conspicuous diel migrations of adult bream Abramis brama in June and July were recorded in one of the channels studied. A considerable proportion of the population of the floodplain lake immigrated into the channel at dusk and left it at dawn. During two winters (1994–1995, 1997–1998) the abundance of fishes increased considerably in the channels. The winter migrations, studied in detail in one of the channels in 1997–1998, started in late October, when the water temperature dropped below 10° C. In contrast to the mean of 500 fishes per 100 m channel length between May and October, >5000 fishes were found from November to March, with maximum values of >50 000 fishes per 100 m channel length in February 1998. More than 90% of these shoals were 0+ year fishes, dominated by roach Rutilus rutilus , bream, perch Perca fluviatilis and rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus . These shoals entered the channel at sunrise and left it around sunset. Generally, the 0+ year fishes in the shoals swam separately from the older fishes, and different reactions towards the attack of predatory fishes were observed. The migrating shoals of juvenile fishes during the winter were interpreted as a strategy to minimize predation risk. 相似文献

Different environmental conditions may lead to diverse morphological, behavioral, and physiological adaptations of different populations of the same species. Lighting conditions, for example, vary vastly especially between aquatic habitats, and have been shown to elicit adaptations. The availability of short-wave ultraviolet (UV) light is especially fluctuating, as UV wavelengths are attenuated strongly depending on water properties. The island of North Uist, Scotland, comprises 2 differential habitat types, tea-stained and clear-water lakes, varying considerably in UV transmission. In previous studies, wild-caught 3-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus populations (3 populations of each habitat type) were tested with respect to their shoaling and mate preferences for fish viewed under UV-present and UV-absent conditions. The results revealed a habitat-dependent preference of UV cues during shoal choice (tea-stained populations: preference for UV-absent condition in tea-stained water; clear-water populations: no preference in clear-water) but an overall preference for UV-present conditions during mate choice. To assess genetic influences on these behavioral patterns, similar experiments were conducted with lab-bred F1-generations of the same stickleback populations that were raised in a common environment (i.e. standardized clear-water conditions). Offspring of sticklebacks from tea-stained lakes tended to prefer shoals viewed under UV-absent conditions (only in tea-stained water), while sticklebacks from clear-water lakes showed a significant preference for the shoal viewed under UV-present conditions in clear-water but not in tea-stained water. Mate-preference experiments demonstrated that females from the tea-stained lakes significantly preferred and females from the clear-water lakes preferred by trend the male viewed under UV-present conditions in the clear-water treatment. The results for both shoaling- and mate-preference tests were largely similar for wild-caught and lab-bred sticklebacks, thus hinting at a genetic basis for the preference patterns. 相似文献

No sibling odor preference in juvenile three-spined sticklebacks 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2
Laboratory-bred juvenile three-spined sticklebacks from 11 sibshipsdid notprefer to shoal with their siblings when they were offeredthe choice betweenodor from unfamiliar siblings and non-kinin a fluviarium, although the powerfor finding a significantpreference was very high (0.99). The test fishpreferred theside where odor from the heavier shoal was supplied; this showsthatthey could appreciate odor cues from conspecifics in our apparatusandshould have preferred their siblings if such a preferenceexists. Our resultsare compatible with theoretical predictionsbut are at variance with previousfindings by other authors. We used independent replicates in a blind protocolwith strictrandomization of fish and procedures. 相似文献

Previous experiments have shown that angelfish are capable of discriminating between shoals composed of conspecifics of different social status and that familiarity mediates the decision. In the present work, the shoaling behaviour of dominant and subordinate angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare, was again examined and the role that potential behavioural differences between the stimulus shoals may play in the shoaling decisions was investigated. In binary shoal choice tests, the stimulus shoals were composed of dominant and subordinate conspecifics from the same dominance hierarchy as the test fish but, in contrast with most studies of this type, the stimulus shoals were placed in tanks that allowed for the full expression of behavioural patterns. Test fish, regardless of social status, showed an association preference for a shoal of dominant over a shoal of subordinate conspecifics. The tendency was significant in the second observation period, which took place about 2 hr and 30 min after the first one, when the swimming activity of the stimulus shoals of dominants was significantly greater than that of subordinates and the shoaling preference for dominants was significantly related to activity differences between the shoals. The results contrast with those previously found in this species when test fish preferred to aggregate with shoals of familiar subordinate conspecifics placed in small display compartments and indicate that angelfish take shoal activity into account when making a shoaling decision. Thus, depending on the situation, shoal activity may take priority over other attributes of the shoals. The preferential association is considered in the context of the potential benefits to the fish when joining a group of active fish in our experimental situation. 相似文献

Few studies have critically investigated the genetic composition of wild fish schools. Yet, such investigations may have profound implications for the understanding of social organization and population differentiation in both fundamental and applied research. Using 20 microsatellite loci, we investigated the composition of 53 schools (total n = 211) of adult and subadult migratory brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) sampled from the known feeding areas of two populations inhabiting Mistassini Lake (Québec, Canada). We specifically tested whether (i) school members originated from the same population, (ii) individuals from the same population within schools were kin (half- or full-siblings), and (iii) kin schooling relationships differed between sexes. Randomization tests revealed a tendency for most schools to be population specific, although some schools were population mixtures. Significantly more kin were found within schools than expected at random for both populations (approximately 21-34% of the total number of school members). This result, combined with the observed size range of individuals, indicated that stable associations between kin may occur beyond juvenile stages for up to 4 years. Nevertheless, a high proportion of school members were non-kin (approximately 66-79%). No differences were detected between sexes in the propensity to school with kin. We discuss the hypothesis that the stable kin groups, rather than arising from kin selection, may instead be a by-product of familiarity based on individual selection for the maintenance of local adaptations related to migration (natal and feeding area philopatry). Our results are noteworthy because they suggest that there is some degree of permanence in the composition of wild fish schools. Additionally, they support the hypothesis that schools can be hierarchically structured (from population members down to family groups) and are thus nonrandom genetic entities. 相似文献

Although schooling behaviour is an important antipredator response of guppies ( Poecilia reticulata ) in Trinidad it is not known whether fish elect to school with particular individuals. Familiarity is a simple mechanism that could lead to non-random associations within schools. In this paper we test the idea that prior experience of particular individuals influences the choice of partners during schooling. We show (in a laboratory study) that female guppies prefer to associate with familiar individuals. However, we are unable to detect any schooling preference for unfamiliar females from the same population. 相似文献

Direct day and night underwater observations of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during summer and autumn showed a duality in response to temperature between 7 and 11° C for young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) Atlantic salmon. They were predominantly diurnal in early summer and nocturnal in late summer although water temperatures were similar. Post‐YOY Atlantic salmon did not show a strong response to temperature as they were mostly nocturnal during the study period. It is suggested that the difference in activity patterns between YOY and post‐YOY Atlantic salmon can be explained by size‐dependent trade‐off between growth and predation risk. 相似文献

Schooling chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta were biased towards the water surface (median position <1 m) under isothermal conditions (10° C) in a water column simulator (WCS). Thermal stratification (24/10° C) inhibited upward movement with fish congregating at the thermocline and displaying a clear avoidance of potentially lethal surface waters. A tri-phase model based on piece-wise nonlinear regression was used to describe the distribution shifts of chum salmon during a change from isothermal to thermally stratified conditions. Fish distribution was consistent with thermoregulatory behaviour and exhibited 'attraction', 'preference' and 'avoidance' phases. The thermal preference of 50% of the fish lay between 12·2 and 20·2° C, however, >83·5% of the fish occupied a 'preferred' temperature range of 13·7–17·9° C. The mean temperature at which 50% of chum salmon avoided rising temperature by shifting deeper in the water column and using the cooler thermocline was 20·2° C, and 90% avoidance occurred at 22·9° C. Behavioural responses to thermal stratification were consistent amongst underyearling fish of differing size and age. 相似文献

Icelandic freshwater systems are geologically young and contain only six species of freshwater fish. As these species colonized Icelandic fresh waters they were presented with a diversity of unique, uncontested habitats and food resources, promoting the evolution of new behaviour strategies crucial to the formation of new morphs and speciation. To determine the likelihood that predation threat could affect the antipredator behaviour and possibly the sympatric divergence of prey populations, we analysed antipredator behaviour of seven groups of Icelandic threespine sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ): two marine groups, one group from a lake without piscine predators, and two polymorphic lake populations, each with two groups occupying unique habitats. Shoaling cohesion, school formation and duration, and vigilance in predator inspection/avoidance behaviour varied greatly among groups. The differences appeared to be related to the risk of predation as well as to opportunities and constraints set by the different habitats. Antipredator behaviour was especially pronounced and differed extensively in two polymorphic forms from the lake Thingvallavatn, where predation risk is very high. By keeping the two morphs separate in their respective habitats, high predation risk may be a contributing factor in promoting the habitat-specific divergence of G. aculeatus seen in the lake. This suggests that in situations where refuge habitats are spatially separated, the risk of predation may contribute to the evolution of separate sympatric forms of small fish such as G. aculeatus . © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 189–203. 相似文献

The possibility that the feeding activity of roach Rutilus rutilus shows an autumnal shift towards hours of lower light intensity in shallow and illuminated habitats in temperate watercourses as a consequence of relatively increasing daytime predation risk was tested in a littoral zone of a large boreal lake using trapping experiments. Autumnal feeding activity of R. rutilus first showed a striking shift from day to twilight when water temperature fell from 20 to 10° C, and a low but steady night activity prevailed in late autumn, when temperature had fallen to 5° C and the length of the night had increased. The size of the captured littoral R. rutilus also increased throughout the autumn. Both shifts may be linked to increasing daytime predation risk and decreasing food demand and availability. 相似文献

The diel rhythms in metabolic rate ( MR ) and activity level ( AL ) were measured for single post-hatching dogfish (weight range, 2.76–10.61 g) at 15° C by the indirect calorimetric method of rate of oxygen consumption ( V O2 ) and by video-observation respectively, over a period of 72 b. The mean VO 2 increased from 62.0 (s.e. 2.9) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 in the daylight hours to 85.5 (s.e. 3.1) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during the dark (light regíme, 12 h L: 12 h D). The simultaneous measurement of A L also showed mean night elevation from 0.6 (s.e. 0.2) min h−1 in the light phase to 14.5 (s.e. 1.6) min h−1 during the darkness. Bimodal nocturnal activity (BNA) was exhibited by the post-hatching dogfish within the 12 h dark period, with V O2 increasing from 71.4 (s.e. 2.8) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 before 01.00 hours to 99.5 (s.e. 4.2) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 after 01.00 hours. Similarly, A L also increased from 8.9 (s.e. I.7)min h−1 before 01.00 hours to 21.1 (s.e. 2.8) min h−1 after 01.00 hours. The importance of the results presented to the natural behavioural ecology of the hatching dogfish are discussed. 相似文献

Water body and bank structure use of adult roach Rutilus rutilus were examined to increase the knowledge of the most abundant species in the River Spree, Germany. Six tracking series were conducted between 1994 and 1995 to analyse the seasonal and diel movements of the fish. In each series, four to 12 roach were tagged externally and located every 2 h for up to 14 days using radiotelemetry. Roach were highly active, moving up to 10 km downstream to Lake Dämeritzsee, and up to 6 km upstream from their release site. The fish, which mostly swam greater distances upstream during the day and downstream at night, were most active during the spawning season. Their habitat range varied greatly. Close-range habitat, based on 50% of all radiolocations, varied between 5 and 1350 m (mean, ̄=296 m). Wide-range habitat, based on 90% of all radiolocations, varied between 75 and 3820 m (̄=1006 m). The fish preferred different sections of water at different times of year, casting doubt on the relevance of the term home range. Generally, roach stayed close to the bank structures of the main channel during the day and moved to the stagnant waters at night. Consequently, they were most active at dawn and dusk. 相似文献

Archival tags were used to study the movement and depth behaviour of school sharks, Galeorhinus galeus, in southern australia. Thirty fish were tagged in late 1997, and to date there have been nine recaptures (30% recapture rate). Periods at liberty varied from 8 days to 18 months. The sharks spent about 80% of their time on the continental shelf, and appeared to swim close to the bottom during the day. At night they often ascended for periods of up to several hours, except at times around the full moon. When in deep water, the sharks typically descended at dawn to depths of up to 600m, before ascending at dusk. It was not possible to use the light data from the tags to estimate position when the sharks were in deep water, because they were often at depths beyond the sensitivity of the tag. In shallower water, longitude was estimated from the light data but latitude was estimated from the maximum daily depth, assuming the fish were on the bottom. The timing of the dives in deepwater appeared sufficiently regular to offer the prospect of using it to estimate longitude. We propose future research using archival tags on this species should address questions about female reproductive migrations, pelagic behaviour and vertical movements. 相似文献
