Polymer solar cells are conventionally processed by coating a multicomponent mixture containing polymer, fullerene, solvent, and cosolvent. The photovoltaic performance strongly depends on the nanoscale morphology of the blend, which is largely determined by the precise nature of the solvent composition and drying conditions. Here, an alternative processing route is investigated in which the two active layer components are deposited sequentially via spin coating or doctor blading. Spin coating the fullerene from o‐dichlorobenzene on top of the polymer provides virtually identical morphologies and photovoltaic performance. Using blade coating, the influence of the second‐layer solvent for the fullerene derivative is investigated in further detail. Different aromatic solvents are compared regarding swelling of the polymer layer, fullerene solubility, and evaporation rate. It is found that while swelling of the polymer by the second‐layer solvent is a necessity for sequential processing, the solubility of the fullerene derivative in this solvent has the strongest influence on solar cell performance. Homogeneous layers in which a sufficient amount of fullerene can infiltrate the polymer film can only be achieved when solvents are used that have a very high solubility for the fullerene and swell the polymer layer.  相似文献

While recent reports have established significant miscibility in polymer:fullerene blends used in organic solar cells, little is actually known about why polymers and fullerenes mix and how their mixing can be controlled. Here, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and molecular simulations are used to study mixing in a variety of polymer:molecule blends by systematically varying the polymer and small‐molecule properties. It is found that a variety of polymer:fullerene blends mix by forming bimolecular crystals provided there is sufficient space between the polymer side chains to accommodate a fullerene. Polymer:tetrafluoro‐tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4‐TCNQ) bimolecular crystals were also observed, although bimolecular crystals did not form in the other studied polymer:non‐fullerene blends, including those with both conjugated and non‐conjugated small molecules. DSC and molecular simulations demonstrate that strong polymer–fullerene interactions can exist, and the calculations point to van der Waals interactions as a significant driving force for molecular mixing.  相似文献

Understanding the stability and degradation mechanisms of organic solar materials is critically important to achieving long device lifetimes. Here, an investigation of the photodegradation of polymer:fullerene blend films exposed to ambient conditions for a variety of polymer and fullerene derivative combinations is presented. Despite the wide range in polymer stabilities to photodegradation, the rate of irreversible polymer photobleaching in blend films is found to consistently and dramatically increase with decreasing electron affinity of the fullerene derivative. Furthermore, blends containing fullerenes with the smallest electron affinities photobleached at a faster rate than films of the pure polymer. These observations can be explained by a mechanism where both the polymer and fullerene donate photogenerated electrons to diatomic oxygen to form the superoxide radical anion which degrades the polymer.  相似文献

The application of conjugated polymer and fullerene water‐based nanoparticles (NP) as ecofriendly inks for organic photovoltaics (OPVs) is reported. A low bandgap polymer diketopyrrolopyrrole–quinquethiophene (PDPP5T‐2) and the methanofullerene PC71BM are processed into three types of nanoparticles: pristine fullerene NPs, pristine polymer NPs, and mixed polymer:fullerene NPs, allowing the formation of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) composites with different domain sizes. Mild thermal annealing is required to melt the nanospheres and enable the formation of interconnected pathways within mixed phases. This BHJ is accompanied by a shrinkage of film, whereas the more compact layers show enhanced mobility. Consistently reduced recombination and better performance are found for mixed NP, containing both, the polymer and the fullerene within a single NP. The optimized solar cell processed by ultrasmall NPs delivers a power conversion efficiency of about 3.4%. This is among the highest values reported for aqueous processed OPVs but still lacks performance compared to those being processed from halogenated solvents. Incomplete crystallization is identified as the main root for reduced efficiency. It is nevertheless believed that postprocessing does not cut attraction from printing aqueous organic NP inks as a trendsetting strategy for the reliable and ecofriendly production of organic solar cells.  相似文献

The development of nonfullerene acceptors has brought polymer solar cells into a new era. Maximizing the performance of nonfullerene solar cells needs appropriate polymer donors that match with the acceptors in both electrical and morphological properties. So far, the design rationales for polymer donors are mainly borrowed from fullerene‐based solar cells, which are not necessarily applicable to nonfullerene solar cells. In this work, the influence of side chain length of polymer donors based on a set of random terpolymers PTAZ‐TPD10‐Cn on the device performance of polymer solar cells is investigated with three different acceptor materials, i.e., a fullerene acceptor [70]PCBM, a polymer acceptor N2200, and a fused‐ring molecular acceptor ITIC. Shortening the side chains of polymer donors improves the device performance of [70]PCBM‐based devices, but deteriorates the N2200‐ and ITIC‐based devices. Morphology studies unveil that the miscibility between donor and acceptor in blend films depends on the side chain length of polymer donors. Upon shortening the side chains of the polymer donors, the miscibility between the donor and acceptor increases for the [70]PCBM‐based blends, but decreases for the N2200‐ and ITIC‐based blends. These findings provide new guidelines for the development of polymer donors to match with emerging nonfullerene acceptors.  相似文献

It is commonly believed that large dielectric constants are required for efficient charge separation in polymer photovoltaic devices. However, many polymers used in high‐performance solar cells do not possess high dielectric constants. In this work, the effect of polymer–fullerene interactions on the dielectric environment of the active layer blend and the device performance for several donor–acceptor conjugated polymer systems is investigated. It is found that, while none of the high‐performing polymers studied has a dielectric constant value larger than 3, all polymer–fullerene blends have a significantly larger dielectric constant compared to their pristine constituents. Additionally, it is found that the blend dielectric constant reaches a maximum value in fully optimized devices. Using PTB7:PC71BM blends as an example, it is showed that, in addition to a small increase in the dielectric constant, devices fabricated using the optimum processing additive concentration exhibit almost 3X larger excited state polarizability. This large increase in excited state polarizability results in a substantial difference in short‐circuit current and ultimately device performance. The results show that the excited state polarizability critically depends on polymer–fullerene interactions, and can be a leading indicator of device performance for a given material system.  相似文献

The power conversion efficiency of poly(N‐(2‐ethylhexyl)‐3,6‐bis(4‐dodecyloxythiophen‐2‐yl)phthalimide) (PhBTEH)/fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells improves from 0.43 to 4.1% by using a processing additive. The underlying mechanism for the almost 10‐fold enhancement in solar cell performance is found to be inhibition of fullerene intercalation into the polymer side chains and regulation of the relative crystallization/aggregation rates of the polymer and fullerene. An optimal interconnected two‐phase morphology with 15–20 nm domains is obtained when a processing additive is used compared with 100–300 nm domains without the additive. The results demonstrate that a processing additive provides an effective means of controlling both the fullerene intercalation in polymer/fullerene blends and the domain sizes of their phase‐separated nanoscale morphology.  相似文献

Intrinsic photodegradation of organic solar cells, theoretically attributed to C? H bond rearrangement/breaking, remains a key commercialization barrier. This work presents, via dark electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), the first experimental evidence for metastable C dangling bonds (DBs) formed by blue/UV irradiation of polymer:fullerene blend films in nitrogen. The DB density increases with irradiation and decreases ≈4‐fold after 2 weeks in the dark. The dark EPR also shows increased densities of other spin‐active sites in photodegraded polymer, fullerene, and polymer:fullerene blend films, consistent with broad electronic measurements of fundamental properties, including defect/gap state densities. The EPR and electronic measurements enable identification of defect states, whether in the polymer, fullerene, or at the donor/acceptor (D/A) interface. Importantly, the EPR results indicate that the DBs are at the D/A interface, as they were present only in the blend films. The role of polarons in interface DB formation is also discussed.  相似文献

A new strategy for designing ternary solar cells is reported in this paper. A low‐bandgap polymer named PTB7‐Th and a high‐bandgap polymer named PBDTTS‐FTAZ sharing the same bulk ionization potential and interface positive integer charge transfer energy while featuring complementary absorption spectra are selected. They are used to fabricate efficient ternary solar cells, where the hole can be transported freely between the two donor polymers and collected by the electrode as in one broadband low bandgap polymer. Furthermore, the fullerene acceptor is chosen so that the energy of the positive integer charge transfer state of the two donor polymers is equal to the energy of negative integer charge transfer state of the fullerene, enabling enhanced dissociation of all polymer donor and fullerene acceptor excitons and suppressed bimolecular and trap assistant recombination. The two donor polymers feature good miscibility and energy transfer from high‐bandgap polymer of PBDTTS‐FTAZ to low‐bandgap polymer of PTB7‐Th, which contribute to enhanced performance of the ternary solar cell.  相似文献

The charge carrier dynamics of a new polymer‐fullerene blend are examined on the femtosecond to the millisecond time scale. The full time range is globally fitted using a chemical reaction rate model that includes all key processes, charge generation, energy transfer, charge separation, and recombination, over the full 12 orders of magnitude in time and a factor of 33 in light intensity. Particular attention is paid to the charge recombination processes and it is found that they are highly material specific. Comparison of the dynamics to those of a previously studied polymer:fullerene blend reveals that while for one blend the recombination dynamics are mainly controlled by geminate recombination, the charge recombination in the presently studied polymer:fullerene blend are entirely controlled by non‐geminate electron‐hole recombination. Carrier density dependence of the non‐geminate recombination rate is analyzed and a correlated disorder model of site energies is proposed to explain the observed dependency.  相似文献

The complex intermixing morphology is critical for the performance of the nanostructured polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. Here, time resolved in situ grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction and grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering are used to track the structure formation of BHJ thin films formed from the donor polymer poly(2,5‐bis(3‐hexadecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene) with different fullerene derivative acceptors. The formation of stable bimolecular crystals through the intercalation of fullerene molecules between the side chains of polymer crystallites is investigated. Such systems exhibit more efficient exciton dissociation but lower photo‐conductance and faster decay of charges. On the basis of the experimental observations, intercalation obviously takes place before or with the formation of the crystalline polymer domains. It results in more stable structures whose volume remains constant upon further drying. Three distinct periods of drying are observed and the formation of unidimensional fullerene channels along the π‐stacking direction of polymer crystallites is confirmed.  相似文献

In this article a method for the fabrication and reproducible in-vitro evaluation of conducting polymer nanoparticles blended with fullerene as the next generation photosensitizers for Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is reported. The nanoparticles are formed by hydrophobic interaction of the semiconducting polymer MEH-PPV (poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]) with the fullerene PCBM (phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) in the presence of a non-compatible solvent. MEH-PPV has a high extinction coefficient that leads to high rates of triplet formation, and efficient charge and energy transfer to the fullerene PCBM. The latter processes enhance the efficiency of the PDT system through fullerene assisted triplet and radical formation, and ultrafast deactivation of MEH-PPV excited stated. The results reported here show that this nanoparticle PDT sensitizing system is highly effective and shows unexpected specificity to cancer cell lines.  相似文献

The photophysics of bulk heterojunctions of a high‐performance, low‐gap silicon‐bridged dithiophene polymer with oleic acid capped PbS quantum dots (QDs) are studied to assess the material potential for light harvesting in the visible‐ and IR‐light ranges. By employing a wide range of nanocrystal sizes, systematic dependences of electron and hole transfer on quantum‐dot size are established for the first time on a low‐gap polymer–dot system. The studied system exhibits type II band offsets for dot sizes up to ca. 4 nm, whch allow fast hole transfer from the quantum dots to the polymer that competes favorably with the intrinsic QD recombination. Electron transfer from the polymer is also observed although it is less competitive with the fast polymer exciton recombination for most QD sizes studied. The incorporation of a fullerene derivative provides efficient electron‐quenching sites that improve interfacial polymer‐exciton dissociation in ternary polymer–fullerene–QD blends. The study indicates that programmable band offsets that allow both electron and hole extraction can be produced for efficient light harvesting based on this low‐gap polymer‐PbS QD composite.  相似文献

The use of fullerene as acceptor limits the thermal stability of organic solar cells at high temperatures as their diffusion inside the donor leads to phase separation via Ostwald ripening. Here it is reported that fullerene diffusion is fully suppressed at temperatures up to 140 °C in bulk heterojunctions based on the benzodithiophene‐based polymer (the poly[[4,8‐bis[(2‐ethylhexyl)oxy]‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl][3‐fluoro‐2‐[(2‐ethylhexyl)carbonyl]‐thieno[3,4‐b]thiophenediyl]], (PTB7) in combination with the fullerene derivative [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM). The blend stability is found independently of the presence of diiodooctane (DIO) used to optimize nanostructuration and in contrast to PTB7 blends using the smaller fullerene derivative PC70BM. The unprecedented thermal stability of PTB7:PC70BM layers is addressed to local minima in the mixing enthalpy of the blend forming stable phases that inhibit fullerene diffusion. Importantly, although the nanoscale morphology of DIO processed blends is thermally stable, corresponding devices show strong performance losses under thermal stress. Only by the use of a high temperature annealing step removing residual DIO from the device, remarkably stable high efficiency solar cells with performance losses less than 10% after a continuous annealing at 140 °C over 3 days are obtained. These results pave the way toward high temperature stable polymer solar cells using fullerene acceptors.  相似文献

Triplet exciton (TE) formation pathways are systematically investigated in prototype bulk heterojunction (BHJ) “super yellow” poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (SY‐PPV) solar cell devices with varying fullerene compositions using complementary optoelectrical and electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) spectroscopies. It is shown that EDMR spectroscopy allows the unambiguous demonstration of fullerene triplet production in BHJ polymer:fullerene solar cells. EDMR triplet detection under selective photoexcitation of each blend component and of the interfacial charge transfer (CT) state reveals that low lying fullerene TEs are produced by direct intersystem crossing from singlet excitons (SEs). The direct CT‐TE recombination pathway, although energetically feasible, is kinetically suppressed in these devices. However, high energy CT states in the CT manifold can contribute to the population of the fullerene triplet state via a direct CT‐SE conversion. This undesirable energetic alignment could be one of the causes for the severe reduction in photocurrent observed when the open‐circuit voltage of polymer:fullerene solar cells is pushed to 1.0 V or beyond.  相似文献

We report an optical investigation of conjugated polymer (P3HT)/fullerene (PCBM) semiconductor blends sensitized by near‐infrared absorbing quantum dots (PbS QDs). A systematic series of samples that include pristine, binary and ternary blends of the materials are studied using steady‐state absorption, photoluminescence (PL) and ultrafast transient absorption. Measurements show an enhancement of the absorption strength in the near‐infrared upon QD incorporation. PL quenching of the polymer and the QD exciton emission is observed and predominantly attributed to intermaterial photoinduced charge transfer processes. Pump‐probe experiments show photo‐excitations to relax via an initial ultrafast decay while longer‐lived photoinduced absorption is attributed to charge transfer exciton formation and found to depend on the relative ratio of QDs to P3HT:PCBM content. PL experiments and transient absorption measurements indicate that interfacial charge transfer processes occur more efficiently at the fullerene/polymer and fullerene/nanocrystal interfaces compared to polymer/nanocrystal interfaces. Thus the inclusion of the fullerene seems to facilitate exciton dissociation in such blends. The study discusses important and rather unexplored aspects of exciton recombination and charge transfer processes in ternary blend composites of organic semiconductors and near‐infrared quantum dots for applications in solution‐processed photodetectors and solar cells.  相似文献

The importance of morphology to organic solar cell performance is well known, but to date, the lack of quantitative, nanoscale and statistical morphological information has hindered obtaining direct links to device function. Here resonant X‐ray scattering and microscopy are combined to quantitatively measure the nanoscale domain size, distribution and composition in high efficiency solar cells based on PTB7 and PC71BM. The results show that the solvent additive diiodooctane dramatically shrinks the domain size of pure fullerene agglomerates that are embedded in a polymer‐rich 70/30 wt.% molecularly mixed matrix, while preserving the domain composition relative to additive‐free devices. The fundamental miscibility between the species – measured to be equal to the device's matrix composition – is likely the dominant factor behind the overall morphology with the additive affecting the dispersion of excess fullerene. As even the molecular ordering measured by X‐ray diffraction is unchanged between the two processing routes the change in the distribution of domain size and therefore increased domain interface is primarily responsible for the dramatic increase in device performance. While fullerene exciton harvesting is clearly one significant cause of the increase owing to smaller domains, a measured increase in harvesting from the polymer species indicates that the molecular mixing is not the reason for the high efficiency in this system. Rather, excitations in the polymer likely require proximity to a pure fullerene phase for efficient charge separation and transport. Furthermore, in contrast to previous measurements on a PTB7‐based system, a hierarchical morphology was not observed, indicating that it is not necessary for high performance.  相似文献

Domain purity and interface structure are known to be critical for fullerene‐based bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, yet have been very difficult to study. Using novel soft X‐ray tools, we delineate the importance of these parameters by comparing high performance cells based on a novel naphtha[1,2‐c:5,6‐c]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole (NT) material to cells based on a 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole (BT) analogue. BT‐based devices exhibit ~15 nm, mixed domains that differ in composition by at most 22%, causing substantial bimolecular recombination. In contrast, NT‐based devices have more pure domains that are >80 nm in size, yet the polymer‐rich phase still contains at least 22% fullerene. Power conversion efficiency >6% is achieved for NT devices despite a domain size much larger than the nominal exciton diffusion length due to a favourable trade‐off in the mixed domain between exciton harvesting, charge transport, and bimolecular recombination. The miscibility of the fullerene with the NT and BT polymer is measured and correlated to the purity in devices. Importantly, polarized x‐ray scattering reveals preferential face‐on orientation of the NT polymer relative to the PCBM‐rich domains. Such ordering has previously not been observed in fullerene‐based solar cells and is shown here to be possibly a controlling or contributing factor to high performance.  相似文献

The origin of open‐circuit voltage (VOC) was studied for polymer solar cells based on a blend of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and seven fullerene derivatives with different LUMO energy levels and side chains. The temperature dependence of JV characteristics was analyzed by an equivalent circuit model. As a result, VOC increased with the decrease in the saturation current density J0 of the device. Furthermore, J0 was dependent on the activation energy EA for J0, which is related to the HOMO–LUMO energy gap between P3HT and fullerene. Interestingly, the pre‐exponential term J00 for J0 was larger for pristine fullerenes than for substituted fullerene derivatives, suggesting that the electronic coupling between molecules also has substantial impact on VOC. This is probably because the recombination is non‐diffusion‐lmilited reaction depending on electron transfer at the P3HT/fullerene interface. In summary, the origin of VOC is ascribed not only to the relative HOMO–LUMO energy gap but also to the electronic couplings between fullerene/fullerene and polymer/fullerene.  相似文献

Carbon nanoparticles can penetrate the cell membrane and cause cytotoxicity. The diffusion feature and translocation free energy of fullerene through lipid membranes is well reported. However, the knowledge on self-assembly of fullerenes and resulting effects on lipid membrane is poorly addressed. In this work, the self-assembly of fullerene nanoparticles and the resulting influence on the dioleoylphosphtidylcholine (DOPC) model membrane were studied by using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations with explicit solvents. Our simulation results confirm that gathered small fullerene cluster can invade lipid membrane. Simulations show two pathways: 1) assembly process is completely finished before penetration; 2) assembly process coincides with penetration. Simulation results also demonstrate that in the membrane interior, fullerene clusters tend to stay at the position which is 1.0 nm away from the membrane center. In addition, the diverse microscopic stacking mode (i.e., equilateral triangle, tetrahedral pentahedral, trigonal bipyramid and octahedron) of these small fullerene clusters are well characterized. Thus our simulations provide a detailed high-resolution characterization of the microscopic structures of the small fullerene clusters. Further, we found the gathered small fullerene clusters have significant adverse disturbances to the local structure of the membrane, but no great influence on the global integrity of the lipid membrane, which suggests the prerequisite of high-content fullerene for cytotoxicity.  相似文献
