菜粉蝶幼虫在一、二、三、四龄初期饲以大菜粉蝶颗粒体病毒(PbGV),食量减少99.3—38.4%;四龄末或五龄初饲毒,食量反而比健虫高出36.3%和87.2%。幼虫感病后取食期的缩短或延长是食量变化的主要原因。幼虫病死前脱皮过程先被抑制,其结果往往使得死亡时所处的龄期明显延长。幼虫在四龄末饲毒后,由于五龄期延长,食量增加,其死亡前达到的最高体重平均为357.9毫克,远高于健虫化蛹前的最高体重。PbGV对菜粉蝶化蛹也有明显影响。幼虫在五龄前饲毒,一般不能化蛹。五龄第1—3天饲毒,化蛹率26.4—87.9%,第4天饲毒对化蛹无影响。本文结果对应用PbGv防治菜粉蝶幼虫危害以及对该病毒的大量增殖均具指导意义。  相似文献

亚麻荠是一种很少有害虫危害的油料作物。用室内生测和Y 型嗅觉仪研究了亚麻荠对小菜蛾Plutella xylostella幼虫取食和成虫行 为反应的影响。以甘蓝作对照,用亚麻荠叶片喂养的小菜蛾初孵幼虫3天后校正死亡率为79 .2%,显示了较强的致死作用;喂养小菜蛾3龄幼虫至化蛹,其存活率、化蛹率、蛹重及成 虫寿命都显著降低,表明亚麻荠对小菜蛾幼虫的生长发育有不利影响。在幼虫的取食选择实 验中,有甘蓝叶供选择时,小菜蛾幼虫不取食亚麻荠;在无可选择的情况下,小菜蛾幼虫也 取 食亚麻荠叶片,但取食量很小,与取食甘蓝叶的量相比,差异极显著。行为反应测试表明, 小菜蛾成虫对甘蓝和亚麻荠植株的挥发物都有明显的趋性反应,与对照(净化空气)相比, 差异极显著,而在甘蓝和亚麻荠之间无选择性。说明小菜蛾成虫对亚麻荠植株的挥发物具有 较强的定向反应。  相似文献

The effects of temperature and granulosis virus infection both on the development ofPieris rapae L. and the area of cabbage leaf consumed by larvae were investigated. The duration of the larval period increased from 12.9 days at 24°C to 45.3 days at 13°C. The thermal constant for larval development was 196.1 day °C above the threshold temperature of 9.4°C. The area of cabbage leaf consumed per day increased with larval age so that 5th instar larvae ate 70.9% of the total food consumption. Virus infection extended the larval instar in which death occurred and reduced the potential food consumption by as much as 99.6%. Larger virus doses reduced food consumption within the same instar more than smaller doses. The results are discussed in relation to the feasibility of using granulosis virus for the control ofP. rapae.
Résumé L'étude a porté sur les effets de la température et de l'infection provoquée par le virus de la granulose sur le développement dePieris rapae L. et la quantité de feuillage de chou consommée par les larves. La durée du stade larvaire a augmenté de 12,9 j à 24°C à 45,3 j à 13°C. La constante thermique pour le développement larvaire a été de 196,1°C au-delà du seuil de température de 9,4°C. La superficie de feuillage consommée par jour s'est accrue en fonction de l'age des larves de sorte que les larves au 5e stade ont mangé 70,9% de la superficie totale consommée. L'infection provoquée par le virus a augmenté la durée du stade de mortalité et a diminué la consommation potentielle de feuillage de 99,6%. Des doses plus élevées de virus ont réduit la consommation dans le même stade davantage que les doses plus faibles. Les résultats sont discutés par rapport à la possibilité d'utiliser le virus de la granulose dans la lutte biologique contreP. rapae.

Summary The parameters influencing food consumption in larvae and adults of five species of Gerris were studied. An experimental components analysis was utilized with emphasis placed on measurements of the length of time the insects spent handling food items, and the amount of food in the gut at any one time. The following characteristics were noted: (1) The maximum feeding time required to achieve satiation was 2–2.5 h for all gerrids above 10 mg wet weight. For gerrids below this weight, feeding time declined at a logarithmic rate. (2) Body size had little influence on the duration of the feeding period after food deprivation; only with the first and second instar larvae was a significant difference noted. (3) The average duration of the feeding and non-feeding periods was 10.4 and 24.6 min respectively for satiated adult G. remigis in the presence of excess food. (4) Signifcant differences in relative digestive rate existed between adult and larvae irrespective of species. (5) The smaller the gerrid, the greater the volume relative to its body weight that could be consumed at a single feeding, and for all gerrids, the amount consumed per day was greater than the maximum amount that can be ingested at a single feeding, this difference being larger in the larvae than in the adults. (6) The relationship between daily amount consumed and temperature was linear for four species, increasing with increasing temperature; food consumption in G. remigis, however, peaked at about 19°C, and declined linearily at temperatures both above and below this value. (7) Irrespective of instar and stadium duration, food consumption for G. notabilis peaked within a stadium about 40% of the way through the stadium.  相似文献

Quantifying the rate of dispersal of target insects when infected with a disease agent will aid the development of biorational pest control programs. The effect of nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) infection on the mobility of second and fourth instarMamestra brassicaelarvae was investigated in the laboratory and field. NPV infection altered larval mobility, with the changes in behavior varying with the timecourse of infection. Diseased larvae moved three to five times further than healthy ones during the middle stages of infection. By the 7th day postinfection diseased larvae were less mobile than healthy counterparts. The same pattern of modified behavior was observed in both instars. Fourth instar larvae moved further than second instars under laboratory and field conditions. In the field, infected larvae tended to die on the apex of the cabbage leaves. Bioassay of the leaves showed a linear decrease in inoculum from central to peripheral plants within the plots, which occurred to the same extent for second and fourth instars. Leaves from plots where infected fourth instar larvae had been introduced had higher inoculum density than those from plots with second instars.  相似文献

A circadian feeding rhythm which may be entrained by photoperiod was found in fifth instar caterpillars of the lepidopteran, Achaea janata (L.). Allatectomy reduced the amount of food consumed; this consumption was significantly lower during the fifth instar in both allatectomized and sham-operated insects. An apparent circadian feeding pattern appeared on day 2 in the sham-operated caterpillars. Topical application of the anti-allatin, Precocene-II (50 micrograms/animal) also reduced leaf consumption significantly compared to the respective controls, although these controls maintained the same apparent circadian feeding rhythm on day 2.  相似文献

The lepidopteran insect pests have significant importance in vegetable production. The present study was performed to investigate the baseline studies about the assessment of feeding and consumption potential, utilization indices and losses promises of leafworm, Spodoptera litura (Fab.) on Okra. The data regarding feeding potential, food utilization and consumption indices as well as losses of different larval instars were recorded and subjected to appropriate statistical analysis. The results showed that, in the beginning, the approximate digestibility of various instars was increase, e.g. third instar (51.36%–64.03%), fourth instar (63.42%–69.45%) and fifth instar (70.25%–76.10%). However, after a certain period, the digestibility was decreased and efficiency to convert the ingested food into biomass varied significantly. The consumption index values increased with an increase in time but the consumption and growth rate was declined of fourth instar larvae. The ingestion and digestion increased of third (10.01–13.06, 8.32–11.91 mg), fourth (11.27–17.28, 10.96–14.03 mg) and fifth (12.60–19.40, 11.93–15.28 mg) larval instars. The corrected weight of consumed leaves increased with a gain in body weight. However, in the third instar, a decline was observed on the last day of feeding. Maximum leaf area was consumed by fifth instar larvae (44.66 cm2) followed by fourth (35.41 cm2) and third (27.98 cm2) instars. In conclusion, all the dependent parameters, including food utilization potential, consumption indices and losses were higher for fifth instar larvae than others. These results emphasized the re-establishment of fundamental (economic threshold level: ETL, economic injury level: EIL) integrated pest management concepts.  相似文献

  • 2 The relationships between the three host plants and the feeding behaviour, larval movement and performance of cabbage looper larvae that might relate to their interaction with AcMNPV applications were investigated.
  • 3 Larvae reared on cucumber plants consumed approximately ten‐fold more leaf area than larvae reared on pepper plants and almost five‐fold more than larvae reared on tomato plants. This could influence the amount of AcMNPV consumed if it were used as a microbial spray because increased consumption can be associated with increased probability of infection. Survival from neonate to pupa also varied, with the greatest being on cucumber, followed by tomato and pepper plants. Larvae fed cucumber were approximately four‐fold heavier than larvae fed tomato and over 15‐fold heavier than larvae fed pepper plants.
  • 4 The distribution of larvae on plants in commercial greenhouses where a single crop was being grown also varied with food plant with 73% being found on the bottom and middle portions of tomato plants and 87% occurring in the top portions of pepper plants. Larvae tended to be distributed on the middle portion of cucumber plants, the lower portion of tomato plants and the top portion of pepper plants. Larval movement did not vary between AcMNPV‐infected and uninfected controls.
  • 5 It is predicted that the higher leaf area consumption and location of larvae in the middle portion of cucumber plants may make them more susceptible to viral sprays. Furthermore, given their greater survival than larvae fed tomato and pepper, there may be a greater need for virus applications.

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effect of different artificial diets made of powdered seed materials of chickpea ( Cicer arietinum ), soybean ( Glycine max ), and maize ( Zea mays ) on the growth, consumption, and feeding preferences of Helicoverpa armigera larvae. Food consumption and growth of ultimate instar gram pod borer larvae were minimal on maize diet. The nutritive value of the soybean diet was higher, but the consumption rate of larvae was highest on chickpea diet compared with the other test diets. The growth of larvae was statistically equal on chickpea and soybean diets, in spite of differences in the consumption rate of these diets and their nutritive value. There appears to be a direct correlation between the quantity of the diets consumed and their nutritive value for growth of the larvae on chickpea and soybean diets. The lower nutritive value of chickpea diet is correlated with its higher intake by the larvae. Similarly, the lower consumption rate of larvae on soybean diet is correlated with its higher nutritive value. The diet on which the larvae were fed during earlier instars did not induce any feeding preference for that particular diet in the ultimate larval instar. The larvae consumed similar quantities of each of the three diets in their ultimate instar, irrespective of having fed on any of these diets during any preceding instars. However, induction in the quantitative consumption of food by the larvae was evident. The higher or lower consumption rate of diet by the larvae in the ultimate instar was influenced by their food during earlier instars. Hence the food consumption rate of larvae in the last instar appears to be set while feeding on a diet in the preceding instars.  相似文献

Abstract  The potential of a new, previously unidentified Serangium species (Col., Coccinellidae) to control the high Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hom., Aleyrodidae) populations on cassava was evaluated. Field and laboratory studies were carried out to determine the abundance and feeding capacity of this Serangium species feeding on B. tabaci on cassava. Serangium nymphs and adults were most abundant in cassava fields late in the season, rising sharply from 5 months after planting (MAP) to a peak at 7–8 MAP. Pre-imaginal development averaged 21.2 days and was longest in eggs and shortest in the L1 instar. Mean total prey consumption of immature Serangium increased with the stage of development with the lowest consumption in the L1 instar and highest in the L4 instar. Mean daily consumption was lowest on the first day after hatching in the L1 instar and rose to a peak on the 13th day after hatching in the L4 instar. Each Serangium larva consumed a mean of over 1000 nymphs during its entire development. These results have demonstrated the potential of this Serangium species to control B. tabaci populations on cassava.  相似文献

The effect of prey density on feeding behaviour, killing behaviour, and development of the predatory mosquito,Toxorhynchites towadensis, was investigated in the laboratory. The number of prey consumed per larva increased toward an upper asymptote as prey density increased. Prey consumption curves during fourth instar were concave at low prey densities but convex at high prey densities. This phenomenon was not observed during other instars. Killing without consuming any part of prey occurred at prey densities of 20 per container and over. The number of prey killed but not consumed increased linearly with the number of unconsumed prey in the container. Prey acquisition behaviour was not affected by prey densities during the prepupal period. Developmental time from first instar to adult emergence decreased with increasing prey densities, but remained constant at densities of 10 per container and over. Adult size increased with increasing prey densities but there was no effect at prey densities of 20 and over.  相似文献

We have demonstrated that larvae of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L) can successfully complete their first instar when fed apple leaves instead of fruit. Larvae fed leaves after hatching maximized their feeding intensity (about 320 g/larva/day) on day 2. Weight gain revealed a stereotypic sigmoid pattern that peaked on day 3. Although the maximum body weight of larvae fed leaves was 70–85% less than for larvae maintained on apples or on artificial diet, 100% of larvae fed leaves molted to the second instar 3–5 days after hatching. Our investigation revealed a diurnal pattern of leaf ingestion, and neonates' feeding intensity decreased significantly during the scotophase. We also demonstrated that monosodium glutamate (MSG) increased feeding on leaves by codling moth larvae. Depending on the duration of the bioassay, and larval age at time of initial exposure, 0.05 mg/ml and 0.1 mg/ml MSG increased apple leaf consumption by 25–60% over leaves alone. The effect of monosodium glutamate was best demonstrated during the first day following hatching. Exposure to MSG also accelerated molting to the second instar. Larvae exposed to MSG initiated consumption of leaf tissue significantly earlier than control neonates. The feeding stimulatory effect of MSG was not observed if exposure to this chemical was delayed until 3–4 h after hatch.The addition of feeding stimulants to pesticides that act via the alimentary tract may reduce the amount of active ingredients needed to maintain the efficacy of these formulations. Here, we postulate that first instar codling moth larvae are potential targets for treatment with pesticide formulations enhanced with monosodium glutamate.  相似文献

Baculovirus infection in Lepidoptera can alter both larval mobility and feeding rates, which can in turn affect pathogen transmission and dispersal in the field. We compared the damage to cabbage plants in the field caused by healthy and nucleopolyhedrovirus-infected Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae released as second and fourth instars. There was no significant difference in plant consumption by healthy and infected larvae for the first 4 days after release. From day 5 onwards, infected larvae caused significantly less defoliation. This pattern was similar for larvae at both larval instars. Defoliation was greater for fourth instars throughout the experiment.  相似文献

Coalmines, which are major contributors of particulate matter in the form of coal dust, are expanding globally into rural environments. However, ecological effects on organisms interacting with coal‐dusted foliage in mining landscapes are unknown. We tested how the behaviour, development and survival of a polyphageous insect herbivore, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is affected by consuming tomato leaves Lycopersicon esculentum laden with coal dust. We tested (a) feeding site establishment preference of neonates, (b) feeding behaviour and leaf consumption of late‐instar larvae, (c) survival of neonates and (d) survival and development of late‐instar larvae. We found that coal dust consumption increased the mortality of late‐instar larvae but did not influence their development. Despite long‐term implications for survival, late‐instar larvae did not adjust their feeding behaviour or the amount of leaf material consumed in response to foliar coal dust. Contrastingly, when neonate H. armigera were given a choice, they avoided establishing themselves on the coal‐dusted adaxial surface of leaves. Neonate mortality was 99% within 7 days, with no effect of coal dust. Our study provides the first data on the impact of coal dust on an insect herbivore. This has implications for ecological interactions in landscapes adjoining coalmines.  相似文献

【目的】调查显示,二点委夜蛾Athetis lepigone在田间的虫口密度与玉米被害率之间无明显的相关性,田间虫口密度并不能准确预测玉米苗被害率。为了探索二点委夜蛾幼虫发生量与玉米苗被害程度之间的关系,解释田间调查遇到的幼虫即使有时大量发生玉米苗却受损轻微的现象,本研究室内检测了外部环境条件如温度和湿度对二点委夜蛾幼虫取食为害玉米的影响以及昆虫自身的相关取食习性。【方法】将3龄末、4龄初二点委夜蛾幼虫分别置于下述8种温湿度和食物组合条件下进行处理:低温低湿无食物(15℃, 30%RH, 饥饿)、低温干燥无食物(15℃, 0%RH, 饥饿)、低温低湿有食物[15℃, 30%RH, 饲喂人工饲料(AD)]、低温干燥有食物(15℃, 0%RH, AD)、高温高湿有食物(36℃, 90%RH, AD)、高温干燥有食物(36℃, 0%RH, AD)、高温高湿无食物(36℃, 90%RH, 饥饿)、高温干燥无食物(36℃, 0%RH, 饥饿);处理4 h后,评价其对盆栽玉米苗的为害程度,并测定幼虫在4个不同温度(15℃, 24℃, 28℃和33℃)下对玉米叶片的取食量。分别用8种食物(马齿苋、紫苏、甘薯、白菜、大豆、南瓜和玉米叶叶片以及麦秸)将初孵幼虫驯化饲喂至3龄后,检测经过驯化处理后的幼虫对初始驯化食物、麦秸和和玉米叶片的选择性。【结果】在干燥条件下,无论是否经过饥饿处理,幼虫对玉米苗的为害程度均较高,尤其是高温干燥处理后,对玉米苗的平均为害级别达3.1级;低温干燥处理组和高温干燥处理组为害级别在4级以上(含4级)的幼苗数分别占幼苗总数的50%和40%。在15-33℃,二点委夜蛾幼虫的取食量随温度的升高而逐渐增加,48 h校正取食量分别为12.8, 31.8, 38.0和60.0 mg。用甘薯、白菜、大豆和南瓜叶片驯化的幼虫对初始驯化食物的选择率显著高于对玉米和麦秸的选择率;初始取食紫苏叶片的幼虫对紫苏和麦秸的选择率显著高于对玉米的选择性,初始取食玉米叶片、麦秸的幼虫分别对玉米、麦秸的选择性更高。【结论】干燥是二点委夜蛾幼虫增加对玉米摄入量的一个主要因素;二点委夜蛾适应短时高、低温的能力较强,在一定的温度范围(15-33℃),短时间内的取食量随温度升高而增加。作为干燥的一个辅助因素,温度通过影响二点委夜蛾幼虫的取食量而决定其为害玉米苗的程度;二点委夜蛾倾向于选择初孵幼虫最先接触的食物;二点委夜蛾在玉米苗上的发生为害在很大程度上取决于其自身食性。  相似文献

Food consumption was measured in an insecticide-susceptible (Orlando) and-resistant (Village Green) strain of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), throughout each stadium. All instars exhibited a similar pattern of consumption over the course of the instar; consumption was low to moderate at the beginning of each instar, climbed steadily to a maximum near the middle, declined progressively from the mid-instar maximum, and ceased or was minimal several days before the next molt. Consumption ceased or was minimal during the final two to four days of each instar. Cumulative consumption for the six instars was significantly greater in the Village Green strain as compared with the Orlando strain. Village Green nymphs consumed 79.6±0.7 mg of rat chow while Orlando nymphs consumed 63.7±3.4 mg. Total consumption by instar increased significantly with each successive instar in the Village Green strain. In addition, Village Green sixth instar females consumed significantly more food than sixth instar males. A similar trend was observed for the Orlando strain; consumption tended to increase in each successive instar. Relative consumption rate (food consumed/cockroach/instar divided by the mean weight of the instar) was highest in the first two instars and decreased in subsequent instars.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Plant material of Holcus lanatus L. removed from an artificially fertilized trial was used to rear leafhoppers of three feeding types: Dicrano-tropis hamata Boheman and Ebmana sulphurella Zetterstedt, (phloem feeders), Eucelis incisus Kirschbaum (xylem feeder) and Zyginidia scutellaris Herrich-Schaeffer (mesophyll feeder).
2. In the laboratory, leafhopper instar durations, adult consumption rate, oviposition rate, and nitrogen utilization efficiency were influenced by the quality of the food consumed. Adult longevity was unaffected by the level of food quality normally found in plants.
3. Z.scutellanis consumed mesophyll contents equivalent to 72% of its body weight each day but only digested about 30% of its intake. Eincicus had a low dry weight consumption rate (12% body weight/day) but digested its food more efficiently (60%) than the other feeding types. The two phloem feeders consumed mounts equivalent to 25% of their body weight each day and digested 40–50% of their intake.
4. Each species reached maximum nitrogen utilization efficiencies at different plant nitrogen levels. This suggests that leafhopper species may be associated with a particular nitrogen concentration in the grasses.  相似文献

The development of effective biological control programs in which predators are integrated with other natural enemies such as parasitoids and entomopathogens requires an understanding of their interactions. In this study we examined the extent to which the omnivorous mirid bug Dicyphus hesperus, an effective biological control agent of greenhouse whiteflies, accepts prey that are either parasitized by the specialist whitefly parasitoid, Encarsia formosa or infected by the generalist fungal entomopathogen, Beauveria bassiana. In non-choice laboratory experiments, we measured how parasitism and infection of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, as related to parasitoid age and course of fungal infection, might alter the probability of feeding by second instar or adult female predators. Predation by D. hesperus was similar for parasitized and unparasitized whiteflies, regardless of parasitoid age. However, predators generally avoided feeding on infected whiteflies, particularly when infection was manifested through the presence of oosporein or hyphae on the surface of prey.  相似文献
