Evaporation is the most commonly used deposition method in the processing of back electrodes in polymer solar cells used in scientific studies. However, vacuum‐based methods such as evaporation are uneconomical in the upscaling of polymer solar cells as they are throughput limiting steps in an otherwise fast roll‐to‐roll production line. In this paper, the applicability of inkjet printing in the ambient processing of back electrodes in inverted polymer solar cells with the structure ITO/ZnO/P3HT:PCBM/PEDOT:PSS/Ag is investigated. Furthermore, the limitation of screen printing, the commonly employed method in the ambient processing of back electrode, is demonstrated and discussed. Both inkjet printing and screen printing of back electrodes are studied for their impact on the photovoltaic properties of the polymer solar cells measured under 1000 Wm?2 AM1.5. Each ambient processing technique is compared with evaporation in the processing of back electrode. Laser beam induced current (LBIC) imaging is used to investigate the impact of the processing techniques on the current collection in the devices. We report that inkjet printing of back electrode delivers devices having photovoltaic performance comparable to devices with evaporated back electrodes. We further confirm that inkjet printing represent an efficient alternative to screen printing.  相似文献

Three different theoretical approaches are presented to identify pathways to organic solar cells with power conversion efficiencies in excess of 20%. A radiation limit for organic solar cells is introduced that elucidates the role of charge‐transfer (CT) state absorption. Provided this CT action is sufficiently weak, organic solar cells can be as efficient as their inorganic counterparts. Next, a model based on Marcus theory of electronic transfer that also considers exciton generation in both the electron donor and electron acceptor is used to show how reduction of the reorganization energies can lead to substantial efficiency gains. Finally, the dielectric constant is introduced as a central parameter for efficient solar cells. By using a drift–diffusion model, it is found that efficiencies of more than 20% are within reach.  相似文献

The performance of polymer solar cells critically depends on the morphology of the interface between the donor‐ and acceptor materials that are used to create and transport charge carriers. Solar cells based on poly(3‐hexylthiophene) and ZnO were fully characterized in terms of their efficiency and three‐dimensional (3D) morphology on the nanoscale. Here, we establish a quantitative link between efficiency and morphology by using the experimental 3D morphology as direct input for a 3D optoelectronic device model. This model includes the effects of exciton diffusion and quenching; space‐charge; recombination, generation, drift and diffusion of charge carriers; and the injection/extraction of carriers at the contacts. The observed trend in internal quantum efficiency as a function of layer thickness is reproduced with a single set of parameters. Several morphological aspects that determine the internal quantum efficiency are discussed and compared to other organic solar cells. This first direct use of morphological data in an optoelectronic device model highlights the importance of morphology in solar cells.  相似文献

There is a need to find electron acceptors for organic photovoltaics that are not based on fullerene derivatives since fullerenes have a small band gap that limits the open‐circuit voltage (VOC), do not absorb strongly and are expensive. Here, a phenylimide‐based acceptor molecule, 4,7‐bis(4‐(N‐hexyl‐phthalimide)vinyl)benzo[c]1,2,5‐thiadiazole (HPI‐BT), that can be used to make solar cells with VOC values up to 1.11 V and power conversion efficiencies up to 3.7% with two thiophene polymers is demonstrated. An internal quantum efficiency of 56%, compared to 75–90% for polymer‐fullerene devices, results from less efficient separation of geminate charge pairs. While favorable energetic offsets in the polymer‐fullerene devices due to the formation of a disordered mixed phase are thought to improve charge separation, the low miscibility (<5 wt%) of HPI‐BT in polymers is hypothesized to prevent the mixed phase and energetic offsets from forming, thus reducing the driving force for charges to separate into the pure donor and acceptor phases where they can be collected.  相似文献

This work reports on organic bulk heterojunction solar cells based on poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) blended with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in a configuration with so‐called interdigital nanoelectrodes, i.e., vertical electrodes on substrates structured in the submicrometer range. In this setup, both electrodes are in place prior to the deposition of the photoactive blend solution and therefore allow for the application of a voltage during drying of the blend. A strong correlation is observed between the photovoltaic performance of these devices and the voltage that is applied during film formation. Even the polarity of the solar cells can be controlled with this method. It is suggested that this is a consequence of a strong segregation of donor and acceptor phases at the electrode interfaces induced by the applied voltage. Further experiments on planar solar cell geometries, including a solvent‐vapor treatment and the introduction of an additional layer of pure P3HT, as well as numerical simulations, are presented. All results obtained are consistent with the suggested hypothesis.  相似文献

Bulk heterojunction solar cells (BHJs) based on poly[N‐9″‐hepta‐decanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT) can have internal quantum efficiencies approaching 100% but require active layers that are too thin to absorb more than ~70% of the above band gap light. When the active layer thickness is increased so that the cell absorbs more light, the fill factor and open circuit voltage decrease rapidly, so that the overall power conversion efficiency decreases. We find that hole‐traps in the polymer, which we characterize using space‐charge limited current measurements, play an important role in the performance of PCDTBT‐based BHJs and may limit the active layer thickness. Recombination due to carrier trapping is not often considered in BHJs because it is not believed to be a dominant loss mechanism in the “fruit‐fly” P3HT system. Furthermore, we show that in contrast to P3HT, PCDTBT has only weak short‐range molecular order, and that annealing at temperatures above the glass transition decreases the order in the π–π stacking. The decrease in structural order is matched by the movement of hole‐traps deeper into the band gap, so that thermal annealing worsens hole transport in the polymer and reduces the efficiency of PCDTBT‐based BHJs. These findings suggest that P3HT is not prototypical of the new class of high efficiency polymers, and that further improvement of BHJ efficiencies will necessitate the study of high efficiency polymers with low structural order.  相似文献

Triple‐junction device architectures represent a promising strategy to highly efficient organic solar cells. Accurate characterization of such devices is challenging, especially with respect to determining the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the individual subcells. The specific light bias conditions that are commonly used to determine the EQE of a subcell of interest cause an excess of charge generation in the two other subcells. This results in the build‐up of an electric field over the subcell of interest, which enhances current generation and leads to an overestimation of the EQE. A new protocol, involving optical modeling, is developed to correctly measure the EQE of triple‐junction organic solar cells. Apart from correcting for the build‐up electric field, the effect of light intensity is considered with the help of representative single‐junction cells. The short‐circuit current density (JSC) determined from integration of the EQE with the AM1.5G solar spectrum differs by up to 10% between corrected and uncorrected protocols. The results are validated by comparing the EQE experimentally measured to the EQE calculated via optical‐electronic modeling, obtaining an excellent agreement.  相似文献

In this study, we demonstrate in‐situ n‐doping and crosslinking of semiconducting polymers as efficient electron‐transporting materials for inverted configuration polymer solar cells. The semiconducting polymers were crosslinked with bis(perfluorophenyl) azide (bis‐PFPA) to form a robust solvent‐resistant film, thereby preventing solvent‐induced erosion during subsequent solution‐based device processing. In addition, chemical n‐doping of semiconducting polymers with (4‐(1,3‐dimethyl‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐benzoimidazol‐2‐yl)phenyl)dimethylamine (N‐DMBI) substantially improved the power conversion efficiency of solar cells from 0.69% to 3.42%. These results open the way for progress on generally applicable polymeric interface materials, providing not only high device performance but also an effective fabrication method for solution‐processed multilayer solar cell devices.  相似文献

Ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) have progressed significantly in recent years due to the sufficient photon harvesting of the blend photoactive layer including three absorption‐complementary materials. With the rapid development of highly efficient ternary OSCs in photovoltaics, the precise energy‐level alignment of the three active components within ternary OSC devices should be taken into account. The machine‐learning technique is a computational method that can effectively learn from previous historical data to build predictive models. In this study, a dataset of 124 fullerene derivatives‐based ternary OSCs is manually constructed from a diverse range of literature along with their frontier molecular orbital theory levels, and device structures. Different machine‐learning algorithms are trained based on these electronic parameters to predict photovoltaic efficiency. Thus, the best predictive capability is provided by using the Random Forest approach beyond other machine‐learning algorithms in the dataset. Furthermore, the Random Forest algorithm yields valuable insights into the crucial role of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of organic donors in the performance of ternary OSCs. The outcome of this study demonstrates a smart strategy for extracting underlying complex correlations in fullerene derivatives‐based ternary OSCs, thereby accelerating the development of ternary OSCs and related research fields.  相似文献

The origin of open‐circuit voltage (VOC) was studied for polymer solar cells based on a blend of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and seven fullerene derivatives with different LUMO energy levels and side chains. The temperature dependence of JV characteristics was analyzed by an equivalent circuit model. As a result, VOC increased with the decrease in the saturation current density J0 of the device. Furthermore, J0 was dependent on the activation energy EA for J0, which is related to the HOMO–LUMO energy gap between P3HT and fullerene. Interestingly, the pre‐exponential term J00 for J0 was larger for pristine fullerenes than for substituted fullerene derivatives, suggesting that the electronic coupling between molecules also has substantial impact on VOC. This is probably because the recombination is non‐diffusion‐lmilited reaction depending on electron transfer at the P3HT/fullerene interface. In summary, the origin of VOC is ascribed not only to the relative HOMO–LUMO energy gap but also to the electronic couplings between fullerene/fullerene and polymer/fullerene.  相似文献

Intrinsic photodegradation of organic solar cells, theoretically attributed to C? H bond rearrangement/breaking, remains a key commercialization barrier. This work presents, via dark electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), the first experimental evidence for metastable C dangling bonds (DBs) formed by blue/UV irradiation of polymer:fullerene blend films in nitrogen. The DB density increases with irradiation and decreases ≈4‐fold after 2 weeks in the dark. The dark EPR also shows increased densities of other spin‐active sites in photodegraded polymer, fullerene, and polymer:fullerene blend films, consistent with broad electronic measurements of fundamental properties, including defect/gap state densities. The EPR and electronic measurements enable identification of defect states, whether in the polymer, fullerene, or at the donor/acceptor (D/A) interface. Importantly, the EPR results indicate that the DBs are at the D/A interface, as they were present only in the blend films. The role of polarons in interface DB formation is also discussed.  相似文献
