The straightforward and inexpensive fabrication of stabilized and activated photoelectrodes for application to tandem photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is reported. Semiconductors such as Si, WO3, and BiVO4 can be coated with a composite layer formed upon hydrolytic decomposition of heterobimetallic single source precursors (SSPs) based on Ti and Ni, or Ti and Co in a simple single‐step process under ambient conditions. The resulting 3d‐transition metal oxide composite films are multifunctional, as they protect the semiconductor electrode from corrosion with an amorphous TiO2 coating and act as bifunctional electrocatalysts for H2 and O2 evolution based on catalytic Ni or Co species. Thus, this approach enables the use of the same precursors for both photoelectrodes in tandem PEC water splitting, and SSP chemistry is thereby established as a highly versatile low‐cost approach to protect and activate photoelectrodes. In an optimized system, SSP coating of a Si photocathode and a BiVO4 photoanode resulted in a benchmark noble metal‐free dual‐photoelectrode tandem PEC cell for overall solar water splitting with an applied bias solar‐to‐hydrogen conversion efficiency of 0.59% and a half‐life photostability of 5 h.  相似文献

Recent advances in solar water splitting by using BiVO4 as a photoanode have greatly optimized charge carrier and reaction dynamics, but relatively wide bandgap and poor photostability are still bottlenecks. Here, an excellent photoanode of black BiVO4@amorphous TiO2?x to tackle both problems is reported. Its applied bias photon‐to‐current efficiency for solar water splitting is up to 2.5%, which is a new record for a single oxide photon absorber. This unique core–shell structure is fabricated by coating amorphous TiO2 on nanoporous BiVO4 with the aid of atomic layer deposition and further hydrogen plasma treatment at room temperature. The black BiVO4 with moderate oxygen vacancies reveals a bandgap reduction of ≈0.3 eV and significantly enhances solar utilization, charge transport and separation simultaneously, compared with conventional BiVO4. The amorphous layer of TiO2?x acts as both oxygen‐evolution catalyst and protection layer, which suppresses anodic photocorrosion to stabilize black BiVO4. This configuration of black BiVO4@amorphous TiO2?x may provide an effective strategy to prompt solar water splitting toward practical applications.  相似文献

Plasmonic metal nanostructures have been extensively investigated to improve the performance of metal oxide photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar water splitting cells. Most of these studies have focused on the effects of those metal nanostructures on enhancing light absorption and enabling direct energy transfer via hot electrons. However, several recent studies have shown that plasmonic metal nanostructures can improve the PEC performance of metal oxide photoanodes via another mechanism known as plasmon‐induced resonant energy transfer (PIRET). However, this PIRET effect has not yet been tested for the molybdenum‐doped bismuth vanadium oxide (Mo:BiVO4), regarded as one of the best metal oxide photoanode candidates. Here, this study constructs a hybrid Au nanosphere/Mo:BiVO4 photoanode interwoven in a hexagonal pattern to investigate the PIRET effect on the PEC performance of Mo:BiVO4. This study finds that the Au nanosphere array not only increases light absorption of the photoanode as expected, but also improves both its charge transport and charge transfer efficiencies via PIRET, as confirmed by time‐correlated single photon counting and transient absorption studies. As a result, incorporating the Au nanosphere array increases the photocurrent density of Mo:BiVO4 at 1.23 V versus RHE by ≈2.2‐fold (2.83 mA cm?2).  相似文献

Widespread application of solar water splitting for energy conversion is largely dependent on the progress in developing not only efficient but also cheap and scalable photoelectrodes. Metal oxides, which can be deposited with scalable techniques and are relatively cheap, are particularly interesting, but high efficiency is still hindered by the poor carrier transport properties (i.e., carrier mobility and lifetime). Here, a mild hydrogen treatment is introduced to bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), which is one of the most promising metal oxide photoelectrodes, as a method to overcome the carrier transport limitations. Time‐resolved microwave and terahertz conductivity measurements reveal more than twofold enhancement of the carrier lifetime for the hydrogen‐treated BiVO4, without significantly affecting the carrier mobility. This is in contrast to the case of tungsten‐doped BiVO4, although hydrogen is also a donor type dopant in BiVO4. The enhancement in carrier lifetime is found to be caused by significant reduction of trap‐assisted recombination, either via passivation or reduction of deep trap states related to vanadium antisite on bismuth or vanadium interstitials according to density functional theory calculations. Overall, these findings provide further insights on the interplay between defect modulation and carrier transport in metal oxides, which benefit the development of low‐cost, highly‐efficient solar energy conversion devices.  相似文献

N‐type metal oxides such as hematite (α‐Fe2O3) and bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) are promising candidate materials for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting; however, their short minority carrier diffusion length and restricted carrier lifetime result in undesired rapid charge recombination. Herein, a 2D arranged globular Au nanosphere (NS) monolayer array with a highly ordered hexagonal hole pattern (hereafter, Au array) is introduced onto the surface of photoanodes comprised of metal oxide films via a facile drying and transfer‐printing process. Through plasmon‐induced resonance energy transfer, the Au array provides a strong electromagnetic field in the near‐surface area of the metal oxide film. The near‐field coupling interaction and amplification of the electromagnetic field suppress the charge recombination with long‐lived photogenerated holes and simultaneously enhance the light harvesting and charge transfer efficiencies. Consequently, an over 3.3‐fold higher photocurrent density at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) is achieved for the Au array/α‐Fe2O3. Furthermore, the high versatility of this transfer printing of Au arrays is demonstrated by introducing it on the molybdenum‐doped BiVO4 film, resulting in 1.5‐fold higher photocurrent density at 1.23 V versus RHE. The tailored metal film design can provide a potential strategy for the versatile application in various light‐mediated energy conversion and optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

The most important factors dominating solar hydrogen synthesis efficiency include light absorption, charge separation and transport, and surface chemical reactions (charge utilization). In order to tackle these factors, an ordered 1D junction cascade photoelectrode for water splitting, grown via a simple low‐cost solution‐based process and consisting of nanoparticulate BiVO4 on 1D ZnO rods with cobalt phosphate (Co‐Pi) on the surface is synthesized. Flat‐band measurements reveal the feasibility of charge transfer from BiVO4 to ZnO, supported by PL measurements and photocurrent observation in the presence of an efficient hole scavenger, which demonstrate that quenching of luminescence of BiVO4 and enhanced current are caused by electron transfer from BiVO4 to ZnO. A dramatic cathodic shift in onset potential under both visible and full arc irradiation, coupled with a 12‐fold increase in photocurrent (ca. 3 mA cm‐2) are observed compared to BiVO4, resulting in ≈47% IPCE at 410 nm (4% for BiVO4) with high solar energy conversion efficiency (0.88%). The reasons for these enhancements stem from enhanced light absorption and trapping, in situ rectifying electron transfer from BiVO4 to ZnO, hole transfer to Co‐Pi for water oxidation, and facilitating electron transport along 1D ZnO.  相似文献

Strong interest exists in the development of organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite photovoltaics and of photoelectrochemical (PEC) tandem absorber systems for solar fuel production. However, their scalability and durability have long been limiting factors. In this work, it is revealed how both fields can be seamlessly merged together, to obtain scalable, bias‐free solar water splitting tandem devices. For this purpose, state‐of‐the‐art cesium formamidinium methylammonium (CsFAMA) triple cation mixed halide perovskite photovoltaic cells with a nickel oxide (NiOx) hole transport layer are employed to produce Field's metal‐epoxy encapsulated photocathodes. Their stability (up to 7 h), photocurrent density (–12.1 ± 0.3 mA cm?2 at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), and reproducibility enable a matching combination with robust BiVO4 photoanodes, resulting in 0.25 cm2 PEC tandems with an excellent stability of up to 20 h and a bias‐free solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency of 0.35 ± 0.14%. The high reliability of the fabrication procedures allows scaling of the devices up to 10 cm2, with a slight decrease in bias‐free photocurrent density from 0.39 ± 0.15 to 0.23 ± 0.10 mA cm?2 due to an increasing series resistance. To characterize these devices, a versatile 3D‐printed PEC cell is also developed.  相似文献

Metal oxide/Si heterostructures make up an exciting design route to high‐performance electrodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. By monochromatic light sources, contributions of the individual layers in WO3/n‐Si heterostructures are untangled. It shows that band bending near the WO3/n‐Si interface is instrumental in charge separation and transport, and in generating a photovoltage that drives the PEC process. A thin metal layer inserted at the WO3/n‐Si interface helps in establishing the relation among the band bending depth, the photovoltage, and the PEC activity. This discovery breaks with the dominant Z‐scheme design idea, which focuses on increasing the conductivity of an interface layer to facilitate charge transport, but ignores the potential profile around the interface. Based on the analysis, a high‐work‐function metal is predicted to provide the best interface layer in WO3/n‐Si heterojunctions. Indeed, the fabricated WO3/Pt/n‐Si photoelectrodes exhibit a 2 times higher photocurrent density at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a 10 times enhancement at 1.6 V versus RHE compared to WO3/n‐Si. Here, it is essential that the native SiO2 layer at the interface between Si and the metal is kept in order to prevent Fermi level pinning in the Schottky contact between the Si and the metal.  相似文献

Photo‐electrochemical (PEC) solar energy conversion offers the promise of low‐cost renewable fuel generation from abundant sunlight and water. In this Review, recent developments in photo‐electrochemical water splitting are discussed with respect to this promise. State‐of‐the‐art photo‐electrochemical device performance is put in context with the current understanding of the necessary requirements for cost‐effective solar hydrogen generation (in terms of solar‐to‐hydrogen conversion efficiency and system durability, in particular). Several important studies of photo‐electrochemical hydrogen generation at p‐type photocathodes are highlighted, mostly with protection layers (for enhanced durability), but also a few recent examples where protective layers are not needed. Recent work with the widely studied n‐type BiVO4 photoanode is detailed, which highlights the needs and necessities for the next big photoanode material yet to be discovered. The emerging new research direction of photo‐electrocatalytic upgrading of biomass substrates toward value‐added chemicals is then discussed, before closing with a commentary on how research on PEC materials remains a worthwhile endeavor.  相似文献

Understanding the interfacial electronic structures of heterojunctions, a challenging undertaking, is extremely important to the design of photoelectrodes for efficient water splitting. The heterostructured interfaces in terms of crystal defects at the atomic‐level exemplified by TiO2/BiVO4 are studied. Results from both experimental observations and theoretical calculations clearly confirm the spontaneous formation of defective interfaces in the heterostructures. TiO2/BiVO4 junction with engineered interfacial defects can efficiently increase the carrier density and extend the lifetime of electrons. The inherent phenomenon of defective electronic structures in different heterostructures creates a significant impact on their photoelectrochemical performance. The synergetic effect between defect‐mediated mechanism and organic quantum dots sensitization yields significantly increased photoconversion efficiency, which is even superior to that of common metal sulfide sensitized ones. This result demonstrates an approach worthy for the design and fabrication of defect‐mediated heterostructures for water splitting, without utilizing harmful metal sulfides. Moreover, new insights into the influence of intrinsic defects on the interfacial charge transfer process between two different semiconductors for energy‐related applications have also been provided.  相似文献

Molecular hydrogen can be generated renewably by water splitting with an “artificial‐leaf device”, which essentially comprises two electrocatalyst electrodes immersed in water and powered by photovoltaics. Ideally, this device should operate efficiently and be fabricated with cost‐efficient means using earth‐abundant materials. Here, a lightweight electrocatalyst electrode, comprising large surface‐area NiCo2O4 nanorods that are firmly anchored onto a carbon–paper current collector via a dense network of nitrogen‐doped carbon nanotubes is presented. This electrocatalyst electrode is bifunctional in that it can efficiently operate as both anode and cathode in the same alkaline solution, as quantified by a delivered current density of 10 mA cm?2 at an overpotential of 400 mV for each of the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions. By driving two such identical electrodes with a solution‐processed thin‐film perovskite photovoltaic assembly, a wired artificial‐leaf device is obtained that features a Faradaic H2 evolution efficiency of 100%, and a solar‐to‐hydrogen conversion efficiency of 6.2%. A detailed cost analysis is presented, which implies that the material‐payback time of this device is of the order of 100 days.  相似文献

A high Schottky barrier (>0.65 eV) for electrons is typically found on lightly doped n‐type crystalline (c‐Si) wafers for a variety of contact metals. This behavior is commonly attributed to the Fermi‐level pinning effect and has hindered the development of n‐type c‐Si solar cells, while its p‐type counterparts have been commercialized for several decades, typically utilizing aluminium alloys in full‐area, and more recently, partial‐area rear contact configurations. Here the authors demonstrate a highly conductive and thermally stable electrode composed of a magnesium oxide/aluminium (MgOx/Al) contact, achieving moderately low resistivity Ohmic contacts on lightly doped n‐type c‐Si. The electrode, functionalized with nanoscale MgOx films, significantly enhances the performance of n‐type c‐Si solar cells to a power conversion efficiency of 20%, advancing n‐type c‐Si solar cells with full‐area dopant‐free rear contacts to a point of competitiveness with the standard p‐type architecture. The low thermal budget of the cathode formation, its dopant‐free nature, and the simplicity of the device structure enabled by the MgOx/Al contact open up new possibilities in designing and fabricating low‐cost optoelectronic devices, including solar cells, thin film transistors, or light emitting diodes.  相似文献

Wireless photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices promise easy device fabrication as well as reduced losses. Here, the design and fabrication of a stand‐alone ion exchange material‐embedded, Si membrane‐based, photoelectrochemical cell architecture with micron‐sized pores is shown, to overcome the i) pH gradient formation due to long‐distance ion transport, ii) product crossover, and iii) parasitic light absorption by application of a patterned catalyst. The membrane‐embedded PEC cell with micropores utilizes a triple Si junction cell as the light absorber, and Pt and IrOx as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reactions and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. The solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency of 7% at steady‐state operation, as compared to an unpatterned ηPV of 10.8%, is mainly attributed to absorption losses by the incorporation of the micropores and catalyst microdots. The introduction of the Nafion ion exchange material ensures an intrinsically safe PEC cell, by reducing the total gas crossover to <0.1%, while without a cation exchange membrane, a crossover of >6% is observed. Only in a pure electrolyte of 1 m H2SO4, a pH gradient‐free system is observed thus completely avoiding the build‐up of a counteracting potential.  相似文献

Low‐resistance contact to lightly doped n‐type crystalline silicon (c‐Si) has long been recognized as technologically challenging due to the pervasive Fermi‐level pinning effect. This has hindered the development of certain devices such as n‐type c‐Si solar cells made with partial rear contacts (PRC) directly to the lowly doped c‐Si wafer. Here, a simple and robust process is demonstrated for achieving mΩ cm2 scale contact resistivities on lightly doped n‐type c‐Si via a lithium fluoride/aluminum contact. The realization of this low‐resistance contact enables the fabrication of a first‐of‐its‐kind high‐efficiency n‐type PRC solar cell. The electron contact of this cell is made to less than 1% of the rear surface area, reducing the impact of contact recombination and optical losses, permitting a power conversion efficiency of greater than 20% in the initial proof‐of‐concept stage. The implementation of the LiFx/Al contact mitigates the need for the costly high‐temperature phosphorus diffusion, typically implemented in such a cell design to nullify the issue of Fermi level pinning at the electron contact. The timing of this demonstration is significant, given the ongoing transition from p‐type to n‐type c‐Si solar cell architectures, together with the increased adoption of advanced PRC device structures within the c‐Si photovoltaic industry.  相似文献

The ever‐increasing demand for clean and renewable power sources has sparked intensive research on water splitting to produce hydrogen, in which the exploration of electrocatalysts is the central issue. Herein, a new strategy, metal–organic framework template‐directed fabrication of hierarchically structured Co3O4@X (X = Co3O4, CoS, C, and CoP) electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is developed, where Co3O4@X are derived from cobalt carbonatehydroxide@zeolitic‐imidazolate‐framework‐67 (CCH@ZIF‐67). Unique hierarchical structure and synergistic effect of resulting catalysts endow abundant exposed active sites, facile ion diffusion path, and improved conductivity, being favorable for improving catalytic activity of them. Consequently, these derivatives Co3O4@X reveal highly efficient electrocatalytic performance with long‐term durability for the OER, much superior to previously reported cobalt‐based catalysts as well as the Ir/C catalyst. Particularly, Co3O4@CoP exhibits the highest electrocatalytic capability with the lower overpotential of 238 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm?2. Furthermore, Co3O4@X can also efficiently catalyze other small molecules through electro‐oxidation reaction (e.g., glycerol, methanol, or ethanol). It is expected that the strategy presented here can be extended to the fabrication of other composite electrode materials with hierarchical structures for more efficient water splitting.  相似文献

Perovskite‐organic tandem solar cells are attracting more attention due to their potential for highly efficient and flexible photovoltaic device. In this work, efficient perovskite‐organic monolithic tandem solar cells integrating the wide bandgap perovskite (1.74 eV) and low bandgap organic active PBDB‐T:SN6IC‐4F (1.30 eV) layer, which serve as the top and bottom subcell, respectively, are developed. The resulting perovskite‐organic tandem solar cells with passivated wide‐bandgap perovskite show a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.13%, with an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.85 V, a short‐circuit photocurrent (Jsc) of 11.52 mA cm?2, and a fill factor (FF) of 70.98%. Thanks to the advantages of low temperature fabrication processes and the flexibility properties of the device, a flexible tandem solar cell which obtain a PCE of 13.61%, with Voc of 1.80 V, Jsc of 11.07 mA cm?2, and FF of 68.31% is fabricated. Moreover, to demonstrate the achieved high Voc in the tandem solar cells for potential applications, a photovoltaic (PV)‐driven electrolysis system combing the tandem solar cell and water splitting electrocatalysis is assembled. The integrated device demonstrates a solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency of 12.30% and 11.21% for rigid, and flexible perovskite‐organic tandem solar cell based PV‐driven electrolysis systems, respectively.  相似文献

A (040)‐crystal facet engineered BiVO4 ((040)‐BVO) photoanode is investigated for solar fuel production. The (040)‐BVO photoanode is favorable for improved charge carrier mobility and high photocatalytic active sites for solar light energy conversion. This crystal facet design of the (040)‐BVO photoanode leads to an increase in the energy conversion efficiency for solar fuel production and an enhancement of the oxygen evolution rate. The photocurrent density of the (040)‐BVO photoanode is determined to be 0.94 mA cm?2 under AM 1.5 G illumination and produces 42.1% of the absorbed photon‐to‐current conversion efficiency at 1.23 V (vs RHE, reversible hydrogen electrode). The enhanced charge separation efficiency and improved charge injection efficiency driven by (040) facet can produce hydrogen with 0.02 mmol h?1 at 1.23 V. The correlation between the (040)‐BVO photoanode and the solar fuel production is investigated. The results provide a promising approach for the development of solar fuel production using a BiVO4 photoanode.  相似文献

Realizing solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) efficiencies close to 20% using low‐cost semiconductors remains a major step toward accomplishing the practical viability of photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation technologies. Dual‐absorber tandem cells combining inexpensive semiconductors are a promising strategy to achieve high STH efficiencies at a reasonable cost. Here, a perovskite photovoltaic biased silicon (Si) photoelectrode is demonstrated for highly efficient stand‐alone solar water splitting. A p+nn+ ‐Si/Ti/Pt photocathode is shown to present a remarkable photon‐to‐current efficiency of 14.1% under biased condition and stability over three days under continuous illumination. Upon pairing with a semitransparent mixed perovskite solar cell of an appropriate bandgap with state‐of‐the‐art performance, an unprecedented 17.6% STH efficiency is achieved for self‐driven solar water splitting. Modeling and analysis of the dual‐absorber PEC system reveal that further work into replacing the noble‐metal catalyst materials with earth‐abundant elements and improvement of perovskite fill factor will pave the way for the realization of a low‐cost high‐efficiency PEC system.  相似文献

Construction of well‐defined metal–organic framework precursor is vital to derive highly efficient transition metal–carbon‐based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting. Herein, a novel strategy involving an in situ transformation of ultrathin cobalt layered double hydroxide into 2D cobalt zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF‐67) nanosheets grafted with 3D ZIF‐67 polyhedra supported on the surface of carbon cloth (2D/3D ZIF‐67@CC) precursor is proposed. After a low‐temperature pyrolysis, this precursor can be further converted into hybrid composites composed of ultrafine cobalt nanoparticles embedded within 2D N‐doped carbon nanosheets and 3D N‐doped hollow carbon polyhedra (Co@N‐CS/N‐HCP@CC). Experimental and density functional theory calculations results indicate that such composites have the advantages of a large number of accessible active sites, accelerated charge/mass transfer ability, the synergistic effect of components as well as an optimal water adsorption energy change. As a result, the obtained Co@N‐CS/N‐HCP@CC catalyst requires overpotentials of only 66 and 248 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm?2 for HER and OER in 1.0 m KOH, respectively. Remarkably, it enables an alkali‐electrolyzer with a current density of 10 mA cm?2 at a low cell voltage of 1.545 V, superior to that of the IrO2@CC||Pt/C@CC couple (1.592 V).  相似文献

A significant advance toward the design and fabrication of a novel hierarchical supercapacitor electrode consisting of FeCo2S4‐tubes with well‐defined square cross‐section and intersecting nanosheets built porous shells on a 3D porous Ni backbone via controlled sulfidation is reported. This general method allows template‐free synthesis of metal sulfides tubular structures with polygonal cross‐sections and also fine control over the nanostructure leading to both maximized porosity and saturation sulfidation. New insights into concentration and time dependent sulfidation reaction kinetics are proposed. The FeCo2S4 electrode achieves a specific capacitance reaching 2411 F g‐1 at 5 mA cm‐2 and good rate capability, which are superior over those for nanotube arrays of other ternary transition metal sulfides. This is attributed to rich redox reactions, the highly porous but robust architecture as well as high electrical conductivity. Especially such porous shells effectively avoid “dead volume”, thus improve the utilization ratio of the electrode material. Asymmetric solid‐state device applying the FeCo2S4 as positive electrode and N‐doped graphene hydrogel film as negative electrode has a high cell voltage of 1.6 V and thus delivers considerably higher energy density of 76.1 W h kg‐1 (at 755 W kg‐1) than those reported for similar devices.  相似文献
