A new concept of multiple redox semi‐solid‐liquid (MRSSL) flow battery that takes advantage of active materials in both liquid and solid phases, is proposed and demonstrated. Liquid lithium iodide (LiI) electrolyte and solid sulfur/carbon (S/C) composite, forming LiI‐S/C MRSSL catholyte, are employed to demonstrate this concept. Record volumetric capacity (550 Ah L?1catholyte) is achieved using highly concentrated and synergistic multiple redox reactions of LiI and sulfur. The liquid LiI electrolyte is found to increase the reversible volumetric capacity of the catholyte, improve the electrochemical utilization of the S/C composite, and reduce the viscosity of catholyte. A continuous flow test is demonstrated and the influence of the flow rate on the flow battery performance is discussed. The MRSSL flow battery concept transforms inactive component into bi‐functional active species and creates synergistic interactions between multiple redox couples, offering a new direction and wide‐open opportunities to develop high‐energy‐density flow batteries.  相似文献

The applications of carbon and carbon‐based materials with high porosity, high surface area, and functionalities based on metal‐organic framework precursors and/or templates have attracted significant research interest in recent years, particularly in the field of batteries. The chemical and physical properties of carbon and carbon‐based materials obtained by the heat treatment of various metal‐organic framework precursors or templates are improved to a certain extent. In this comprehensive review, the synthetic methods and electrochemical performance of carbon materials derived from metal‐organic frameworks (metal/carbon, metal oxide/carbon, nitrogen‐doped carbon, porous carbon, etc.) along with their applications in batteries are outlined.  相似文献

The all‐vanadium redox flow battery is a promising technology for large‐scale renewable and grid energy storage, but is limited by the low energy density and poor stability of the vanadium electrolyte solutions. A new vanadium redox flow battery with a significant improvement over the current technology is reported in this paper. This battery uses sulfate‐chloride mixed electrolytes, which are capable of dissolving 2.5 M vanadium, representing about a 70% increase in energy capacity over the current sulfate system. More importantly, the new electrolyte remains stable over a wide temperature range of ?5 to 50 °C, potentially eliminating the need for electrolyte temperature control in practical applications. This development would lead to a significant reduction in the cost of energy storage, thus accelerating its market penetration.  相似文献

Increasing worldwide energy demands and rising CO2 emissions have motivated a search for new technologies to take advantage of renewables such as solar and wind energies. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) with their high power density, high energy efficiency, scalability (up to MW and MWh), and safety features are one suitable option for integrating such energy sources and overcoming their intermittency. However, resource limitation and high system costs of current RFB technologies impede wide implementation. Here, a total organic aqueous redox flow battery (OARFB) is reported, using low‐cost and sustainable methyl viologen (MV, anolyte) and 4‐hydroxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐oxyl (4‐HO‐TEMPO, catholyte), and benign NaCl supporting electrolyte. The electrochemical properties of the organic redox active materials are studied using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode voltammetry. The MV/4‐HO‐TEMPO ARFB has an exceptionally high cell voltage, 1.25 V. Prototypes of the organic ARFB can be operated at high current densities ranging from 20 to 100 mA cm2, and deliver stable capacity for 100 cycles with nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency. The MV/4‐HO‐TEMPO ARFB displays attractive technical merits and thus represents a major advance in ARFBs.  相似文献

A non‐aqueous lithium‐ion redox flow battery employing organic molecules is proposed and investigated. 2,5‐Di‐tert‐butyl‐1,4‐bis(2‐methoxyethoxy)benzene and a variety of molecules derived from quinoxaline are employed as initial high‐potential and low‐potential active materials, respectively. Electrochemical measurements highlight that the choice of electrolyte and of substituent groups can have a significant impact on redox species performance. The charge‐discharge characteristics are investigated in a modified coin‐cell configuration. After an initial break‐in period, coulombic and energy efficiencies for this unoptimized system are ~70% and ~37%, respectively, with major charge and discharge plateaus between 1.8‐2.4 V and 1.7‐1.3 V, respectively, for 30 cycles. Performance enhancements are expected with improvements in cell design and materials processing.  相似文献

A highly stable phosphonate‐functionalized anthraquinone is introduced as the redox‐active material in a negative potential electrolyte (negolyte) for aqueous redox flow batteries operating at nearly neutral pH. The design and synthesis of 2,6‐DPPEAQ, (((9,10‐dioxo‐9,10‐dihydroanthracene‐2,6‐diyl)bis(oxy))bis(propane‐3,1‐diyl))bis(phosphonic acid), which has a high solubility at pH 9 and above, is described. Chemical stability studies demonstrate high stability at both pH 9 and 12. By pairing 2,6‐DPPEAQ with a potassium ferri/ferrocyanide positive electrolyte across an inexpensive, nonfluorinated permselective polymer membrane, this near‐neutral quinone flow battery exhibits an open‐circuit voltage of 1.0 V and a capacity fade rate of 0.00036% per cycle and 0.014% per day, which is the lowest ever reported for any flow battery in the absence of rebalancing processes. It is further demonstrated that the negolyte pH drifts upward upon atmospheric oxygen penetration but, when oxygen is excluded, oscillates reversibly between 9 and 12 during cycling. These results enhance the suitability of aqueous‐soluble redox‐active organics for use in large‐scale energy storage, potentially enabling massive penetration of intermittent renewable electricity.  相似文献

Early demonstrations of wearable devices have driven interest in flexible lithium‐ion batteries. Previous demonstrations of flexible lithium‐ion batteries trade off between low areal capacity, poor mechanical flexibility and/or high thickness of inactive components. Here, a reinforced electrode design is used to support the active layers of the battery and a freestanding carbon nanotube (CNT) layer is used as the current collector. The supported architecture helps to increase the areal capacity (mAh cm‐2) of the battery and improve the tensile strength and mechanical flexibility of the electrodes. Batteries based on lithium cobalt oxide and lithium titanate oxide shows excellent electrochemical and mechanical performance. The battery has an areal capacity of ≈1 mAh cm‐2 and a capacity retention of around 94% after cycling the battery for 450 cycles at a C/2 rate. The reinforced electrode has a tensile strength of ≈5.5–7.0 MPa and shows excellent capacity retention after repeatedly flexing to a bending radius ranging from 45 to 10 mm. The relationships between mechanical flexing, electrochemical performance, and mechanical integrity of the battery are studied using electrochemical cycling, electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).  相似文献

A cathode‐flow lithium‐iodine (Li–I) battery is proposed operating by the triiodide/iodide (I3?/I?) redox couple in aqueous solution. The aqueous Li–I battery has noticeably high energy density (≈0.28 kWh kg?1cell) because of the considerable solubility of LiI in aqueous solution (≈8.2 m ) and reasonably high power density (≈130 mW cm?2 at a current rate of 60 mA cm?2, 328 K). In the operation of cathode‐flow mode, the Li–I battery attains high storage capacity (≈90% of the theoretical capacity), Coulombic efficiency (100% ± 1% in 2–20 cycles) and cyclic performance (>99% capacity retention for 20 cycles) up to total capacity of 100 mAh.  相似文献

In recent years, the electrochemical power sources community has launched massive research programs, conferences, and workshops on the “post Li battery era.” However, in this report it is shown that the quest for post Li‐ion and Li battery technologies is incorrect in its essence. This is the outcome of a three day discussion on the future technologies that could provide an answer to a question that many ask these days: Which are the technologies that can be regarded as alternative to Li‐ion batteries? The answer to this question is a rather surprising one: Li‐ion battery technology will be here for many years to come, and therefore the use of “post Li‐ion” battery technologies would be misleading. However, there are applications with needs for which Li‐ion batteries will not be able to provide complete technological solutions, as well as lower cost and sustainability. In these specific cases, other battery technologies will play a key role. Here, the term “side‐by‐side technologies” is coined alongside a discussion of its meaning. The progress report does not cover the topic of Li‐metal battery technologies, but covers the technologies of sodium‐ion, multivalent, metal–air, and flow batteries.  相似文献

Monolithically integrated solar flow batteries (SFBs) hold promise as compact stand‐alone energy systems for off‐grid solar electrification. Although considerable research is devoted to studying and improving the round‐trip efficiency of SFBs, little attention is paid to the device lifetime. Herein, a neutral pH aqueous electrolyte SFB with robust organic redox couples and inexpensive silicon‐based photoelectrodes is demonstrated. Enabled by the excellent stability of both electrolytes and protected photoelectrodes, this SFB device exhibits not only unprecedented stable continuous cycling performance over 200 h but also a capacity utilization rate higher than 80%. Moreover, through comprehensive study on the working mechanisms of SFBs, a new theory based on instantaneous solar‐to‐output electricity efficiency toward more optimized device design is developed and a significantly improved solar‐to‐output electricity efficiency of 5.4% from single‐junction silicon photoelectrodes is realized. The design principles presented in this work for extending device lifetime and boosting round trip energy efficiency will make SFBs more competitive for off‐grid applications.  相似文献

A highly stable phosphonate‐functionalized viologen is introduced as the redox‐active material in a negative potential electrolyte for aqueous redox flow batteries (ARFBs) operating at nearly neutral pH. The solubility is 1.23 m and the reduction potential is the lowest of any substituted viologen utilized in a flow battery, reaching ?0.462 V versus SHE at pH = 9. The negative charges in both the oxidized and the reduced states of 1,1′‐bis(3‐phosphonopropyl)‐[4,4′‐bipyridine]‐1,1′‐diium dibromide ( BPP?Vi ) effect low permeability in cation exchange membranes and suppress a bimolecular mechanism of viologen decomposition. A flow battery pairing BPP?Vi with a ferrocyanide‐based positive potential electrolyte across an inexpensive, non‐fluorinated cation exchange membrane at pH = 9 exhibits an open‐circuit voltage of 0.9 V and a capacity fade rate of 0.016% per day or 0.00069% per cycle. Overcharging leads to viologen decomposition, causing irreversible capacity fade. This work introduces extremely stable, extremely low‐permeating and low reduction potential redox active materials into near neutral ARFBs.  相似文献

Electrochemically driven chemical transformations play the key role in controlling storage of energy in chemical bonds and subsequent conversion to power electric vehicles and consumer electronics. The promise of coupling anionic oxygen redox with cationic redox to achieve a substantial increase in capacities has inspired research in a wide range of electrode materials. A key challenge is that these studies have focused on polycrystalline materials, where it is hard to perform precise structural determinations, especially related to the location of light atoms. Here a different approach is utilized and a highly ordered single crystal, Na2?xIrO3 is harnessed, to explore the role of defects and structural transformations in layered transition metal oxide materials on redox‐activity, capacity, reversibility, and stability. Within a combined experimental and theoretical framework, it is demonstrated that 1) it is possible to cycle Na2?xIrO3, offering proof of principle for single‐crystal based batteries 2) structural phase transitions coincide with Ir 4+/Ir 5+ redox couple with no evident contribution from anionic redox 3) strong irreversibility and capacity fade observed during cycling correlates with the Na + migration resulting in progressive growth of an electrochemically inert O3‐type NaIrO3 phase.  相似文献

The solar‐rechargeable electric energy storage systems (SEESSs), which can simultaneously harvest and store solar energy, are considered a promising next‐generation renewable energy supply system. However, the difficulty in meeting the demands of higher overall photoelectric conversion and storage efficiency (PCSE) with both high power density and large energy density in the current SEESSs severely limit their practical application. Herein, a new class is demonstrated of portable and highly efficient SEESS that uniquely integrates a perovskite solar module (PSM) and an aluminum‐ion battery (AIB) directly on a bifunctional aluminum electrode without any external circuit. Such nanostructural design in the SEESS not only exhibits fast photo‐charge/discharge rate (less than one minute) with high power density (above 5000 W kg?1), but also delivers a high energy density (above 43 Wh kg?1). By rationally matching the maximum power point voltage of PSM with AIB charging voltage, an excellent solar‐charging efficiency of 15.2% and a high PCSE of 12.04% are achieved, which is among the best in all reported portable SEESSs. Moreover, enhanced PCSE is observed as the light intensity decreases, which makes such SEESS immune from the geographical location and climate limitations for diverse practical applications.  相似文献

A novel low‐cost nanoporous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/silica composite separator has been prepared and evaluated for its use in an all‐vanadium redox flow battery (VRB). The separator consists of silica particles enmeshed in a PTFE fibril matrix. It possesses unique nanoporous structures with an average pore size of 38 nm and a porosity of 48%. These pores function as the ion transport channels during redox flow battery operation. This separator provides excellent electrochemical performance in the mixed‐acid VRB system. The VRB using this separator delivers impressive energy efficiency, rate capability, and temperature tolerance. In additon, the flow cell using the novel separator also demonstrates an exceptional capacity retention capability over extended cycling, thus offering excellent stability for long‐term operation. The characteristics of low cost, excellent electrochemical performance and proven chemical stability afford the PTFE/silica nanoporous separator great potential as a substitute for the Nafion membrane used in VRB applications.  相似文献

Wearable electronics suffer from severe power shortage due to limited working time of Li‐ion batteries, and there is a desperate need to build a hybrid device including energy scavenging and storing units. However, previous attempts to integrate the two units are mainly based on simple external connections and assembly, so that maintaining small volume and low manufacturing cost becomes increasingly challenging. Here a convoluted power device is presented by hybridizing internally a solid Li‐ion battery (SLB) and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), so that the two units are one inseparable entity. The fabricated device acts as a TENG that can deliver a peak output power of 7.4 mW under a loading resistance of 7 MΩ, while the device also acts as an SLB to store the obtained electric energy. The device can be mounted on a human shoe to sustainably operate a green light‐emitting diode, thus demonstrating potential for self‐powered wearable electronics.  相似文献

Redox flow batteries have considerable advantages of system scalability and operation flexibility over other battery technologies, which makes them promising for large‐scale energy storage application. However, they suffer from low energy density and consequently relatively high cost for a nominal energy output. Redox targeting–based flow batteries are employed by incorporating solid energy storage materials in the tank and present energy density far beyond the solubility limit of the electrolytes. The success of this concept relies on paring suitable redox mediators with solid materials for facilitated reaction kinetics and lean electrolyte composition. Here, a redox targeting‐based flow battery system using the NASICON‐type Na3V2(PO4)3 as a capacity booster for both the catholyte and anolyte is reported. With 10‐methylphenothiazine as the cathodic redox mediator and 9‐fluorenone as anodic redox mediator, an all‐organic single molecule redox targeting–based flow battery is developed. The anodic and cathodic capacity are 3 and 17 times higher than the solubility limit of respective electrolyte, with which a full cell can achieve an energy density up to 88 Wh L?1. The reaction mechanism is scrutinized by operando and in‐situ X‐ray and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The reaction kinetics are analysed in terms of Butler–Volmer formalism.  相似文献

A redox flow battery using Fe2+/Fe3+ and V2+/V3+ redox couples in chloric/sulfuric mixed‐acid supporting electrolyte is investigated for potential stationary energy storage applications. The Fe/V redox flow cell using mixed reactant solutions operates within a voltage window of 0.5–1.35 V with a nearly 100% utilization ratio and demonstrates stable cycling over 100 cycles with energy efficiency >80% and no capacity fading at room temperature. A 25% improvement in the discharge energy density of the Fe/V cell is achieved compared with a previously reported Fe/V cell using a pure chloride acid supporting electrolyte. Stable performance is achieved in the temperature range between 0 and 50 °C as well as when using a microporous separator as the membrane. The improved electrochemical performance makes the Fe/V redox flow battery a promising option as a stationary energy storage device to enable renewable integration and stabilization of the electric grid.  相似文献
