Phratora vulgatissima adults exhibit feeding preferences among willow varieties, yet little is known of the effects of willow variety on larval and adult performance. The effects of host variety on adult fitness and fecundity as well as on larval mortality and development were studied under laboratory conditions for 35 willow varieties. The host variety significantly affected the number of days that adults survived and the rates of weight change. On average, males lost weight and females gained weight. The total number of eggs, eggs day1, eggs clutch?1 and the length of the oviposition period were also significantly affected by willow variety. Progeny from eggs laid by adults fed on the different willow varieties showed significant differences in days to pupation and pupal weight when subsequently reared on Salix × dasyclados or on the same variety as fed to the adults. However, there was no correlation between these parameters on S. × dasyclados and the variety fed to adults. The willow variety fed to larvae significantly affected larval mortality (four varieties caused 100% mortality), the shape of larval growth curves (as measured by predicted final weight and time to half the final weight), the number of days to pupation and pupal weight. There were significant positive correlations between previously determined adult P. vulgatissima feeding preferences of the 35 willow varieties and the following: number of eggs laid, length of the oviposition period, larval mortality and development and change in adult weight. There was a considerable degree of variation in these correlations and some varieties did not follow the general trend indicated by the size or sign of particular correlations, for example, having a high feeding preference ranking yet few eggs laid, low larval weight and longer time to pupation. The differences found between varieties for adult and larval performance in conjunction with previously established feeding preferences offer great potential for utilising plant resistance to P. vulgatissima as a means of strategic control. Despite the general correlation of feeding preference and performance parameters, the results found here suggest that it appears to be possible for plant breeders to circumvent this trend.  相似文献

以利用黑水虻Hermetia illucens L.肠道共生细菌不同菌株培养液预发酵的鸡粪为培养料,研究了添加不同菌株的发酵鸡粪对黑水虻幼虫生长发育的影响。结果表明,添加不同菌株的预发酵鸡粪能显著增加预蛹和蛹的重量,显著提高化蛹率并增加雌、雄成虫体长,缩短预蛹所需时间,但对幼虫存活率、成虫羽化率、成虫寿命没有显著影响。同时,不同菌株的作用效果有所不同。  相似文献

The effects of group size on the survival and development of young larvae of Pryeria sinicaMoore were investigated by laboratory and field experiments. Under laboratory conditions, about 20% of isolated larvae died of unsuccessful feeding in the first instar, however, larvae survived successfully in aggregations of four or more individuals. In the field, larvae emerge in early spring and wait for new leaves to open before feeding. In this period, the larger the group size of hatchlings the survival rate became higher. The nest-web spun by hatchlings was considered to play an important role in protecting them from desiccation. In the period that larvae began to feed on leaves, more than 36 larvae are necessary to aggregate for the successful establishment of feeding groups. The nest-web played an important role also in the establishment of feeding group. However, the natural group size of the first instar larvae was larger than the minimum group size to spin a sound nest-web in the field experiment. On the other hand, in later stage, larvae in a large group did not have an excess advantage in survival or developmental rate over larvae in a small group. It was found that the experiments on survival and developmental rates could not explain the reason that this species maintain large compact groups in the most part of larval period.  相似文献

1. Competition was created between the larvae of two life‐history strains of the blowfly Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) that have different requirements for larval resource acquisition. Adult females of one strain had the ability to mature eggs in the absence of adult feeding (autogeny) whereas the other strain lacked this ability. Autogeny shifts the burden of resource acquisition from adults to larvae, potentially leading to greater competition at this earlier life history stage. 2. A replacement series was used to determine the per‐capita competitive effect between strains relative to the intra‐strain effect, and density‐ and frequency‐dependent variation in this per‐capita effect was then evaluated. Evidence was found of competitive superiority of autogenous larvae when they occurred at a low frequency and low density, but their competitive ability was lost or reversed at higher frequencies and densities. 3. A dynamic competitive environment created by frequency and density dependence can account for the maintenance of genetic diversity for major life‐history traits. Such competition may explain why autogeny is rare in field populations of L. cuprina even although underlying genetic variation for the trait seems to be present.  相似文献

单宁酸是一种植物次生代谢物, 为探索其用于蚊幼虫防治的可能性,在室内测定了其对淡色库蚊Culex pipiens pallens抗氰戊菊酯品系和敏感品系1~4龄幼虫的毒性,并观察了其对存活幼虫生长发育的影响。结果表明,淡色库蚊敏感品系幼虫对单宁酸的敏感性比抗氰戊菊酯品系的要高,1~4龄幼虫分别高6.4、4.9、4.7和2.0倍。4个龄期幼虫中,无论是敏感品系还是抗氰戊菊酯品系,均是1龄幼虫对单宁酸的敏感性最高,3龄幼虫最低。在1 000 mg/L单宁酸持续作用下,敏感品系和抗氰戊菊酯品系各龄幼虫的存活率,均随处理时间延长而降低。与对照相比,饲养在100 mg/L~500 mg/L单宁酸溶液中的存活幼虫发育历期延长,敏感品系和抗氰戊菊酯品系发育历期分别延长了34.5~38.3 h和59.2~93.4 h。其中,125 mg/L浓度处理的敏感品系1~4龄幼虫,其发育历期与对照的差异达到了显著水平(P<0.05);抗性品系则在250 mg/L作用下也达到了差异显著水平(P<0.05)。但100~250 mg/L单宁酸处理淡色库蚊抗氰戊菊酯品系和敏感品系1龄幼虫,对其存活幼虫的化蛹率、羽化率和成虫性比均无显著影响。表明单宁酸对淡色库蚊幼虫的影响主要是延迟其生长发育,且影响程度与蚊虫对氰戊菊酯的敏感性有关。  相似文献

The fundamental approach to the biological control of Aedes albopictus requires the mass rearing of mosquitoes and the release of highly competitive adults in the field. As the fitness of adults is highly dependent on the development of immatures, we aimed to identify the minimum feeding regime required to produce viable and competitive adults by evaluating three response parameters: development duration, immature mortality, and adult wing length. Our study suggests at least 0.60 mg/larva/day of larval diet composed of dog food, dried beef liver, yeast, and milk powder in a weight ratio of 2:1:1:1 is required to maximize adult fitness. With standardized protocols in mass rearing, intensive studies can be readily conducted on mosquito colonies to facilitate comparisons across laboratories. This study also evaluated the differences in response of laboratory and field strains under different feeding regimes. We found that strain alone did not exert substantial effects on all response parameters. However, the field strain exhibited significantly lower immature mortality than the laboratory strain under the minimum feeding regime. Females and males of the laboratory strain had longer wing lengths under nutritional constraint due to the higher mortality that resulted in reduced interactions with the remaining larvae. Meanwhile, the field strain exhibited heterogeneous duration of immature development compared with the laboratory strain. The disparities demonstrated by the two strains in this study suggest the effect of inbreeding surfaced after a long term of laboratory colonization. Despite the trade‐offs resulting from laboratory colonization, the competitiveness of the laboratory strain of Ae. albopictus is comparable to the field strain, provided the larvae are fed optimally.  相似文献

The potential impact of the larval feeding by Alagoasa extrema Jacoby (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Alticinae) on potted plants of its host Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae), a weed of major importance in South Africa, was examined. Under quarantine laboratory conditions, 2-month old plants of L. camara variety 029 White Pink were exposed to different larval feeding densities for a period of 18 days (completion of the larval stage). The above-ground dry mass of plants was significantly reduced following attack by larvae at densities of 5 larvae per plant (20% reduction) and 10 larvae per plant (28% reduction), when compared to unattacked plants. Attack by larvae over this short period had no significant impact on root growth. This demonstrates that A. extrema, once established in climatically favourable areas, could well augment other established agents in defoliating L. camara stands, reducing the accumulation of reserves and the competitiveness of the weed.  相似文献

When given a choice of feeding sites in laboratory arenas, Delia antiqua (Meigen) larvae exhibited a 3: 1 bias for internal vs outer sections of onion bulbs and distributed themselves non-randomly among identical preferred onion sections. Larval clustering did not appear to be correlated with increased fitness in the laboratory; larval development was identical across the range of densities from 1 to 50 larvae per onion. Larvae feeding on preferred internal sections developed 14% faster, were 38% heavier upon pupation, and were two times more likely to survive to the adult stage than larvae feeding on outer sections. D. antiqua larval food preference was therefore positively correlated with increased fitness.  相似文献

Nyctemera annulata Boisduval was reared in the laboratory at 26±1°C and 50 ±5% RH on a host plant, ragwort (Senecio jacoboea L.), and on an artificial diet. On ragwort the average life cycle of 34 days embraced a larval period of 24 days, with up to 6 larval instars, and a pupal period of 9–11 days, depending on whether pupation occurred at the 5th or 6th instar. On the artificial diet the larval period of 56 days, involving up to 10 instars, was followed by a pupal period of 9 days, for an average life cycle of 65 days.  相似文献

The relative contributions of ancestry, chance, and past and ongoing election to variation in one adaptive (larval feeding rate) and one seemingly nonadaptive (pupation height) trait were determined in populations ofDrosophila melanogaster adapting to either low or high larval densities in the laboratory. Larval feeding rates increased rapidly in response to high density, and the effects of ancestry, past selection and chance were ameliorated by ongoing selection within 15–20 generations. Similarly, in populations previously kept at high larval density, and then switched to low larval density, the decline of larval feeding rate to ancestral levels was rapid (15-20 generations) and complete, providing support for a previously stated hypothesis regarding the costs of faster feeding inDrosophila larvae. Variation among individuals was the major contributor to variation in pupation height, a trait that would superficially appear to be nonadaptive in the environmental context of the populations used in this study because it did not diverge between sets of populations kept at low versus high larval density for many generations. However, the degree of divergence among populations (FST) for pupation height was significantly less than expected for a selectively neutral trait, and we integrate results from previous studies to suggest that the variation for pupation height among populations is constrained by stabilizing selection, with a flat, plateau-like fitness function that, consequently, allows for substantial phenotypic variation within populations. Our results support the view that the genetic imprints of history (ancestry and past selection) in outbreeding sexual populations are typically likely to be transient in the face of ongoing selection and recombination. The results also illustrate the heuristic point that different forms of selection-for example directional versus stabilizing selection—acting on a trait in different populations may often not be due to differently shaped fitness functions, but rather due to differences in how the fitness function maps onto the actual distribution of phenotypes in a given population. We discuss these results in the light of previous work on reverse evolution, and the role of ancestry, chance, and past and ongoing selection in adaptive evolution.  相似文献

Abstract. The intensity of larval diapause in Sesamia nonagrioides Lef (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was investigated under laboratory conditions. Newly hatched larvae were exposed to different stationary photoperiods (from LD 7 : 17 h to LD 14 : 10 h), at a constant temperature of 25 °C. Diapause incidence was higher when larvae were exposed to daylengths shorter than the critical value (LD 12 : 12 h), whereas the within‐treatment variation in the larval period appeared to be significantly correlated with the photoperiod applied. The incidences of diapause and the duration of larval development were also measured after exposing larvae to short photoperiods (LD 8 : 16 h, LD 10 : 14 h or LD 12 : 12 h) in combination with various temperatures (20, 22.5 or 25 °C). Although an increase in the incidence of diapause appeared with the lowering of the temperature, no statistical differences were observed in the time needed for pupation within the photoperiodic treatments at the temperatures of 20 and 22.5 °C. Furthermore, when diapausing larvae were transferred to the long photoperiod of LD 16 : 8 h, they immediately proceeded to pupation, regardless of the photoperiod or the temperature to which they had been previously exposed, indicating that there were no differences in the intensity of diapause. Photoperiodic changes from LD 10 : 14 h to LD 12 : 12 h or to LD 14 : 10 h at different larval ages reduced the intensity of diapause with (a) early age of transfer and (b) increase of daylength. By contrast, when larvae were transferred from the long photoperiod of LD 14 : 10 h to shorter, such as LD 10 : 14 h or LD 12 : 12 h, a small increase in the intensity of diapause with the shortening of the daylength was apparent. These results support the hypothesis that insects may compare the duration of the photoperiod and could classify them as either longer or shorter in relation to the critical value.  相似文献

Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major pest of maize and sorghum in many countries of tropical Africa. Hitherto, research on this important pest has been hampered by the occurrence of a six-month long diapause in the last larval stage and the lack of an artificial diet for rearing the insect in the laboratory. Incorporating 4 to 8-week-old sorghum powder in a nutritionally adequate diet and rearing larvae individually in vials at ambient laboratory conditions (25–30°C, 50–80% r.h., and L12: D12) have made it possible to rear 15 successive non-diapausing generations ofB. fusca capable of producing between 35 to 40 healthy pupae/litre of diet and upto 70% pupation without loss of vigour or reproductive capacity. Five to six generations were completed per year and the overall mean developmental period (egg-egg) was 68 days (egg 6, larval 45, pre-pupal 1, pupal 14 and pre-oviposition 2 days). Larval period lasted 70 days in the first generation compared to 32.3 days in the fifteenth generation. Average fecundity increased from 158.0 to 394.6 eggs per female with a concomitant increase of egg hatch from 44.8 to 79.6% in the first and fifteenth generation, respectively.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster pupae are exposed to many biotic and abiotic dangers while immobilized during several days of metamorphosis. As a passive defense mechanism, appropriate pupation site selection represents an important mitigation of these threats. Pupation site selection is sensitive to genetic and environmental influences, but the specific mechanisms of the behavior are largely unknown. Using a set of 76 recombinant inbred strains we identify a single quantitative trait locus, at polytene position 56A01-C11, associated with pupation site variation. We furthermore present a detailed investigation into the wandering behaviors of two strains expressing different pupation position tendencies, and identify behavioral differences. Larvae from a strain that tends to pupate relatively far from the food also tend to travel significantly farther from the media during wandering. We did not observe consistent differences in either the number or duration of wandering forays made by near or far pupating strains. The ability of larvae to integrate several internal and external environmental cues while choosing a contextually appropriate pupation site, and specifically, the variation in this ability, presents a very interesting behavioral phenotype in this highly tractable genetic model organism.  相似文献

The effects of a transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-cotton cultivar (DPL 32) on three instars of the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), were determined in laboratory studies. First, third, and fifth instars were fed field collected Bt-cotton leaves for 1, 2, four and 7 d or until pupation, and then transferred to artificial diet. Mortality during the larval stage increased linearly in response to an increase in the length of feeding time on Bt-cotton by first and third instars. The maximum mortality of about two out of three larvae occurred for first instars fed on Bt-cotton until pupation. For the fifth instar, there was no significant response to feeding time; however, most of these larvae reached pupation before 4 d of feeding on Bt-cotton. The length of the larval developmental period also increased linearly with an increase in feeding time on Bt-cotton in first and third instars; again, there was no significant response in the fifth instars. For both mortality and larval developmental time, the linear trend lines for the first and third instars were quite similar. Pupal weight declined linearly in the first and fifth instars in response to feeding time on Bt-cotton. Although pupal weight also declined for third instars, the response was not linear. The effect of Bt-cotton appears not to extend past pupation in that there were no significant responses in mortality and developmental time of pupae during the pupal stage. These data indicate that larvae surviving Bt-cotton are adversely affected in several ways, which should be considered in evaluating Bt-cotton suppression of soybean looper infestations.  相似文献

Preadult mortality of Drosophila simulans in the laboratory is influenced by larval behavior during pupation site choice. The possibility that larvae select a suitable place to pupate may have profound repercussions on their darwinian fitnesses. Twenty-three isofemale lines of a population of D. simulans were analyzed twice for pupation preference, the first time inmediately after being captured, and again after a year of laboratory culture. Pupation height per vial, pupation height on the vial walls, percentage of pupae either in food or on the wall, and egg-to-pupa viability were estimated. A great intrapopulational variation was noticed with an important genetic component for pupation site choice. This suggests a great larval adaptative potential in the population for selecting and using heterogeneous habitats. Time seems not to have modified the population in both the mean values and the phenotypic and genetic variances. Larval viability, however, increased with time. Pupation site choice is discussed on the basis of two independent sets of genes.  相似文献

以棉铃虫Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner)室内敏感品系和田间品系为寄主,研究了亚致死浓度的Bt杀虫蛋白对中红侧沟茧蜂Microplitis mediator (Haliday)生长发育的影响。结果表明: 当寄主一直取食,或者在被寄生前12小时开始取食含Bt杀虫蛋白浓度为0,0.5,1.0, 2.0,4.0,8.0 μg/g的饲料时,与对照相比,中红侧沟茧蜂的卵-幼虫历期延长,茧重和成虫体重降低,成虫寿命缩短,但对茧期没有明显影响。Bt杀虫蛋白能有效抑制两个棉铃虫品系幼虫的生长,显著降低棉铃虫蛹重;当Bt蛋白浓度为4.0 μg/g时,显著降低棉铃虫化蛹率。用转双基因抗虫棉SGK321(表达Cry1A+CpTI蛋白)饲喂两个棉铃虫品系初孵幼虫,室内品系的第2、3、4和5天校正死亡率分别为48.5%、87.8%、96.6%和 95.8%,显著高于田间品系(30.9%、59.6%、80.9%及86.1%)。本研究表明,不论是田间品系还是室内品系,棉铃虫取食含Bt杀虫蛋白的饲料后,对中红侧沟茧蜂的生长发育都具有显著的负面作用。  相似文献

Cannibalism plays a major role in population regulation in Tribolium confusum, accounting for up to tenfold differences in population size between different genetic strains. I characterized the within- and between-strain genetic variation for cannibalism using standard quantitative-genetic methods. The four laboratory strains studied have similar birth and death rates but differ in their strain-specific cannibalistic tendencies. The cannibalism rates of the strains were stable for more than 60 generations of laboratory husbandry. I found considerable genetic variation for cannibalism within each strain. A genetic analysis of the between-strain differences in each of three types of cannibalism (larvae eating eggs, adults eating eggs, and adults eating pupae) showed that all three cannibalism pathways are autosomally inherited and exhibit minor degrees of dominance. Adult cannibalism of eggs and larval cannibalism of eggs appear to be genetically correlated. The differences between the “high” and “low” cannibalism strains appear to be polygenic for two kinds of cannibalism, larvae eating eggs and adults eating pupae. However, strain differences in adult cannibalism of eggs may be due to only two loci. The stability of the between-strain differences for more than 60 generations, the additive nature of inheritance, and the demonstration of considerable within-strain genetic variation suggest that cannibalism may be selectively neutral or under stabilizing selection with many adaptive peaks.  相似文献

1 The objectives of this work were to study the resistance of six kale ( Brassica oleracea acephala group) varieties to cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae (L.) expressed as antibiosis and to determine the effect of plant age on larval survival and development.
2 The influence of plant age on resistance was determined using leaves from seedlings and from mature plants. Survival and development of M. brassicae larvae and feeding rates were determined in laboratory bioassays.
3 Leaves from seedlings were more suitable than those of mature plants for establishing differences in resistance. There were significant differences between kale varieties in larval survival, growth rate, leaf feeding, and time to pupation but not pupal weight. The varieties MBG-BRS0031, MBG-BRS0351, and MBG-BRS0287 reduced survival of M. brassicae larvae. Larvae that fed on MBG-BRS0060 were the heaviest and took the longest time to pupation. MBG-BRS0031 was consumed significantly less by larvae than were all the other varieties examined. Leaves from mature plants of MBG-BRS0142 and MBG-BRS0170 were defoliated significantly less than those of other varieties.
4 In conclusion, the variety MBG-BRS0031 may be a promising source of resistance to M. brassicae . Leaf antibiotic resistance was shown to play a role in defense against M. brassicae attack but it is not the only possible mechanism of resistance.  相似文献

Injection of the juvenile hormone analog (JHA) methoprene into day 3, fifthinstar larvae of Bombyx mori induced developmental arrest. Feeding activity declined, and the larvae remained as larvae for more than 2 weeks, after which they died. After JHA injection, the hemolymph ecdysteroid titer was low, and the prothoracic glands were almost inactive for 7 days. During this period, prothoracic glands were stimulated by prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) in vitro, indicating that JHA did not inhibit the competence of the glands to respond to PTTH. When brain-corpora cardiaca-corpora allata complexes were removed from intact fifth-instar larvae on day 4, the prothoracic glands became autonomously active and produced enough ecdysone for pupation. When PTTH injections were given to larvae previously injected with JHA (7 days before), the larvae recovered feeding activity, purged their guts, and pupated. Injections of 20-hydroxyecdysone into larvae that had been injected with JHA 7 days earlier induced larval molting. These results suggest that JHA affects both the brain and the prothoracic gland.  相似文献

1. Interactions between invertebrate herbivores with different feeding modes are common on long-lived woody plants. In cases where one herbivore facilitates the success of another, the consequences for their shared host plant may be severe. Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), a canopy-dominant conifer native to the eastern U.S., is currently threatened with extirpation by the invasive stylet-feeding hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae). The effect of adelgid on invasive hemlock-feeding folivores remains unknown. 2. This study evaluated the impact of feeding by hemlock woolly adelgid on gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) larval preference for, and performance on, eastern hemlock. To assess preference, 245 field-grown hemlocks were surveyed for gypsy moth herbivory damage and laboratory paired-choice bioassays were conducted. To assess performance, gypsy moth larvae were reared to pupation on adelgid-infested or uninfested hemlock foliage, and pupal weight, proportional weight gain, and larval period were analysed. 3. Adelgid-infested hemlocks experienced more gypsy moth herbivory than did uninfested control trees, and laboratory tests confirmed that gypsy moth larvae preferentially feed on adelgid-infested hemlock foliage. Gypsy moth larvae reared to pupation on adelgid-infested foliage gained more weight than larvae reared on uninfested control foliage. 4. These results suggest that the synergistic effect of adelgid and gypsy moth poses an additional threat to eastern hemlock that may increase extirpation risk and ecological impact throughout most of its range.  相似文献
