Population densities of the three grasshopper species on Miscanthus sinensis grassland in the Kawatabi IBP Area, Japan, Parapleurus alliaceus, Mongolotettix japonicus and Chorthippus latipennis, were estimated principally by the release-and-recapture method for five years from 1968 to 1972. The total number of individuals of all three grasshopper species was about 42 per 100m2 in August. The number of individuals of P. alliaceus adult, the dominant species on this grassland, showed a tendency to decline during the five years, though the amplitude was not so large. The number of eggs laid was, however, nearly constant and the mortality from the second nymphal instar to adult was relatively low and constant during the survey period. The weather conditions during the periods of egg and the first instar, such as snowfall and temperature decreasing, are suggested to be one of the factors causing variation in numbers.  相似文献

Summary The relationship of ‘mean crowding’ to mean density showed that counts of nymphs and adults of the tarnished plant bug,Lygus lineolaris (Beauv.), on birdsfoot trefoil were aggregated and that the index of basic contagion approached zero for each developing stage. Aggregation increased gradually from the first to the fourth instar and then decreased through the adult stage. The mortality process from the first to the fifth instar was inversely density dependent. Inter-sample variance was the major source of population variance although significant variance was occasionally associated with blocks and plots owing to heterogeneity of the host stand. The most appropriate sample unit was a 3 sq. ft. area of foliage and substrate. This was divided into four quarters; application of the variance component technique indicated that in most cases one quarter drawn at random was optimal for sampling different stages. The number of samples required to attain a given level of precision varied inversely with population density. The cost function for sampling was determined for specified levels of precision.  相似文献

A matrix model for populations is described. The model breaks the population into an appropriate number of stadia to allow for reproductive cycles and includes individual daily survival rates and simple density dependence together with migration. Mortality due to insecticidal treatments may be applied on specified days to simulate space spraying while residual insecticides may be simulated with constant or declining effect. The use of the model is exemplified using a simulated population of Blattella germanica with various treatment regimes. This simulation emphasised the importance of immigration.  相似文献

The effects of host age on parasitoid reproductive capacity are studied using the pteromalid parasitoid Lariophagus distinguendusFörster and its bruchid hosts, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) and C. maculatus (F.). A series of experiments were performed to investigate relationships between age and size of host parasitized and the developmental period of pre-imaginal progeny, sex ratio, female size, longevity, fecundity and oviposition rate. There was no effect of host size on preimaginal parasitoid developmental period. Sex ratio varied from less than 5% females from young (small) hosts to 60% females from mature (large) hosts. Adult size, female longevity, fecundity, and oviposition rate were also positively related to host age. Females provided mature hosts lived longer than those provided either young hosts or no hosts, possibly because of an increased ability to host-feed from the larger hosts. The implications of these findings to parasitoid population reproductive capacity and host-parasitoid synchrony are discussed.  相似文献

Time-specific life tables were constructed for three pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris ) (Homoptera: Aphididae), populations using a modification ofHughes' analytical procedure. All populations were studied on second-growth alfalfa (mid-June to mid-July) in south central Wisconsin; data for two populations were collected during 1980, and data for the third population were collected during 1982. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) estimated on a physiological time (day-degree) scale under field conditions but in the absence of natural enemies, provided a reliable estimate of potential population growth rate and was used in preference toHughes' approach of estimating potential population growth rates directly from stage structure data. Emigration by adult alatae and fungal disease were the major sources of A. pisum mortality in each of the three populations studied. These factors were most important because of their impact on reducing birth rates within the local population. Parasitism was never greater than 9 percent. Mortality attributable to predation ranged from 0.0 to about 30.0%; however, even at the highest predator densities A. pisum populations increased exponentially.  相似文献

The wing polymorphism of the oriental chinch bug, Cavelerius saccharivorus, was studied in relation to its reproductive strategy. The frequency distribution of wing form in terms of the relative wing length (R.W.L.) changed with increase in the population density from a single modality biased toward the brachypterous form to bimodality with both macropterous and more extreme brachypterous forms. Since some evidences in the field showed that fliers are limited to macropters, such a bimodality of wing form indicated that C. saccharivorus employs a mixed strategy with some portion of adults staying on in the same habitat, whereas the rest disperse. Moreover, macropters were larger in body size than brachypters emerging in high density populations, although smaller than brachypters emerging in low density populations. Larger body size as well as the delay of ovarian maturation in macropters was considered to be a beneficial trait for migratory behaviour.  相似文献

Summary Six survival curves were drawn (Fig. 1) from a survey over two generations of the population ofDendro'imus spectabi'is Butler at three different places in the Tokyo University Forest in Aichi during the years from 1957 to 1959. The counting of insect number was done at one month interval except during the winter season. Any apparent mortality expressed as percentage decrease was not related in this survey with the density of insect population at the beginning of each interval. Considering of the magnitude and the variability of each apparent mortality, there were three critical periods of heavy decrease in the generation decline, they were; 1) September to October when newly born larvae were dispersing, 2) December to March when the third instar larvae were overwintering, and 3) August to September for the period of fully grown larvae and pupae.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with some aspects of the ecology of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula, in Hawaii. Dispersal studies on adults showed an asymetrical dispersal pattern. The rate of plant to plant to movement by the adults was 3.3–6.7 feet per day. Mortality studies showed that egg predation by ants, Pheidole megancephala, was as high as 80–90 per cent. Egg parasitism by Telenomus basalis was highest during February, 1965, and adult parasitism by Trichopoda pennipes was highest during July, 1964, to January of the following year. The population of N. viridula declined during May, 1964, to May, 1965. This decline occurred simultaneously with the decline in the number of eggs produced per female. It has been speculated that this reduction in egg production was caused by parasitism by T. pennipes.  相似文献

An application ofHokyo andKiritani 's method (1967) was attempted to estimate the stage specific survival rates of the population with overlapping stages. This method can be written as follows assuming a constant daily survival rate (K) throughout the life: where, and F refer respectively to the total incidence of ith instar nymphs and that of individuals after ith instar inclusive, and αi refers to the developmental period of ith instar. Application of this model to caged and natural populations of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula, was made to test its validity. The estimates of the initial number of successive stages obtained from the present method were compared with those fromRichards andWaloff 's method (1954) for the caged populations of 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations. The superiority of the present method to theRichards andWaloff 's in estimating adult numbers was shown in all the generations examined. When different daily survival rates are involved in the course of population decrease, application of the revised method proposed byHokyo andKiritani (1967), gives much reliable estimate as compared with one before correction. The present method is useful in constructing life table of such species as scale insects which complete their life cycle within a defined space, but their successive stages overlap considerably.  相似文献

Effects of niche shift in ecological time scale on the population dynamics of competing species were studied in the experimental populations of two parasitoid wasp species, Anisopteromalus calandrae and Heterospilus prosopidis (both are solitary parasites), on a host, the azuki bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis. Four resource conditions were set up with combination of kind of bean (azuki or black eye), and host distribution (uniform or clumped). In each resource condition, four developmental stages of hosts were provided as a resource spectrum for parasitoid wasps. Population dynamics of the two wasp populations were investigated in each resource condition in Multi-Generation Competitive Systems (MGCS), in which fresh hosts of four developmental stages were periodically introduced and were parasitized competitively by the two wasp species. Competitive coexistence of both wasps occurred in the azuki-clumped condition, where the peaks of the resource utilization curves separated in the two species; pupae in A. calandrae and the early or late fourth instar in H. prosopidis, A. calandrae was eliminated in the azuki-uniform condition and H. prosopidis went extinct in two black eye conditions irrespective of host distributions. The degrees of overlap of the resource utilization patterns of the two wasp species during population dynamics were not significantly different among resource conditions irrespective of the results of coexistence or extinction. Even in the azuki-clumped condition, however, extinction of A. calandrae was observed when resource partitioning could not be realized with only the late fourth instar larvae available to wasps. Further analytical experiments showed that parasitizing ability of A. calandrae increased with host density per bean with azuki beans, but A. calandrae could express higher parasitizing ability with black eye beans than H. prosopidis irrespective of host density per bean. The flexibility in parasitizing ability by A. calandrae for various host stages under different resource conditions was thought to be the major factor in determining the competitive coexistence or the extinction of either species under different resource conditions. The present experiments also suggested that different second-best host stages between competitors could be a major contributing factor to competitive coexistence.  相似文献

Two experiments on the nymphal predation of Podisus maculiventris were conducted using Spodoptera litura larvae as prey. First experiment: The predator nymphs divided into three groups were reared individually from second instar to adult in a small vessel. Each nymph in the groups 1, 2 and 3 was allowed to attack the serially growing larvae (these were supplied at the rate of one per day) from 3-, 5- and 7-day old after hatching, respectively. The first prey used for the group 1 was so small that it was not only insufficient to satiate the predator but also was difficult to be searched out. But these disadvantages were soon recuperated due to the rapid growth of the prey and all nymphs could survive to adults. The survival rate of third and fourth instar nymphs in the group 3 was severely affected by vigorous counterattack of older prey larvae. Second experiment: The predator nymphs were individually reared either in a small vessel or in a large one at various rates of food supply (the prey larvae of 7-day old were used). The functional response curves obtained for each instar of the predator took a saturation type within a certain range of the prey density. The saturation level specific to each instar was generally higher for the predator reared in the large vessel than in the small one. The functional response of fourth and fifth instar nymphs was accelerated at a high prey density, viz. 16 larvae per vessel. Even at the low rate of food supply, viz. one larva per day per predator, the predator nymphs could survive to adults, but the size of resultant adults were abnormally small.  相似文献

The population ecology of Gammarus tigrinus (Sexton) was studied in the Tjeukemeer during 1969 and 1970. G. tigrinus reaches very high densities — up to 24,000/m2 in parts of the study area. In 1970, the summer densities were 2–21/2 times greater than in 1969. Individuals do not grow to such large sizes in the summer as at other times of the year. Females begin to carry eggs in March or April and reproduction ceases in November. Large females have larger broods than smaller animals and the average size of the brood varies with the time of year. The egg incubation period and growth rate are dependent upon temperature. At summer temperatures females became sexually mature after about four weeks and the egg incubation period is about io days. The entire population is turned over about three times during the year. A combination of rapid growth rate, early onset of sexual maturity and high fecundity are probably responsible for the rapid spread of G. tigrinus throughout much of the Netherlands.  相似文献

The leaf-mining larvae of the celery fly, P. heraclei, have the ability to leave their primary mine to bore a secondary mine in another leaflet or leaf. This phenomenon is always numerically significant under natural conditions (depending on the plots and the years, 38 to 97% of the larvae observed made such a change), although it is not an obligatory behavior. The distribution of the secondary mines on the leaflets and on the leaves varies with the importance of the migrations, with the total unoccupied and healthy leaf area and with the relative position of different leaves on the plant. These migrations are due to the insufficiency of healthy food available for the larvae: either because the quantity of parenchyma offered by a leaflet is too small for a larva, or because there is intraspecific competition following multiple egg-layings on the same leaflet, or because there is a deterioration of the quality of the parenchyma, particularly following the development of celery leaf-spot. The possibility for the larvae of P. heraclei to bore secondary mines appears to be an extremely important factor in the population dynamics of this species. This permits the reduction of the negative effects of intraspecific competition and celery leaf-spot, and permits the colonization by the larvae of young leaves not used by the females at the time of egg-laying.  相似文献

The study of the population dynamics of the celery leaf-miner, Philophylla heraclei, must take into account the fact that the host-plant is not present permanently and that it develops between the two annual generations of the insect. This development affects in particular the quality and quantity of the leaves fed upon by the mining larvae. It is possible to know the numerical change of the populations from one annual generation to the next (bivoltine insect) and from one year to the next by counting the populations in the various larval instars, responsible for the injury caused to celery. An accurate method of counting of larval numbers, taking into account their change parallel with that of the host-plant, is described in this text. It makes it possible to know with accuracy the duration and importance of the infestations in relation to external factors and to factors inherent to the host-plant itself. Certain traits of larval behaviour, particularly the transfer of a larva from its original mine to a secondary mine as a result of food shortage can thus be established and estimated quantitatively.  相似文献

1 The pine beauty moth, Panolis flammea, has been a serious pest of lodgepole pine plantations in Scotland since 1976. It historically feeds on native Scots pine throughout Europe but population levels of P. flammea on this host have never been high enough to cause tree mortality in the U.K. 2 This paper reviews recent advances in the biology of the pest and documents control programmes from 1976 to 1999. 3 There has been practically uninterrupted population monitoring of P. flammea from 1977 to the present day in Scottish lodgepole pine plantations. Intervention with chemical spraying has often been necessary. 4 The population data suggest that populations of P. flammea may have had a cyclic pattern over the monitoring period, with outbreaks occurring at regular intervals of between 6 and 7 years. 5 The amplitude of population cycles was large during the 1970s and 1980s, but has dampened in recent years. Natural enemies are believed to contribute to this trend. Fungal disease, specifically, appears to have had a greater effect on pest populations in recent years than in the past and is suggested to have contributed significantly to the population dynamics observed since 1990.  相似文献

Three little-known opecoelid digeneans from marine fishes off Corsica, France, are redescribed and their relationships discussed. Plagioporus novella Maillard & Lambert, 1978 from Conger conger is transferred to Podocotyle as P. novella (Maillard & Lambert, 1978) n. comb. The new combinations Podocotyle tohei (Yamaguti, 1970) and P. congeri (Yamaguti, 1970) are formed for species originally assigned to Plagioporus. Podocotyle temensis Fischthal & Thomas, 1970 from Epinephelus guaza is redescribed and compared with the other Podocotyle species reported from the Mediterranean. A third species, Pseudopecoeloides chloroscombri (Fischthal & Thomas, 1970) n. comb. (was Podocotyloides), is redescribed from three Trachurus species and a key to the species of this Pseudopecoeloides is given.  相似文献

The functional response parameters of the parasitoid, Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard ) to the third instar, the fourth instar and the pupae of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) were estimated from the Random Parasitoid Equation. By modifying this equation for a two host situation and using the parameters estimated above, a no switch model could be obtained. This model was then used to test for switching. In the preference experiments where two stages of the host were presented to the female parasitoid, a definite preference for the fourth instar followed by the pupa and the third instar, respectively was shown. There was, however, no evidence of switching. There was also no evidence that the data fitted the no switch models which suggests that when the parasitoid is searching in an environment with two or more hosts, its searching behaviour is more complex.  相似文献

Egg period was compared among several temperature conditions (11°C, 16°C, 20°C, 23°C) in Sweltsa sp., Stavsolus japonicus, and Isoperla aizuana (Plecoptera). The shortest mean egg incubation period was 27.8 days at 20°C in Sweltsa sp., 118.1 days at 16°C in Stavsolus japonicus, and 162.0 days at 20°C in Isoperla aizuana on average. Egg hatching rate was also the highest at the water temperature that provided the shortest egg incubation period. Based on laboratory data, eggs of Sweltsa sp. were considered to be deposited in May and hatched in June in the field. Thus, they must have spent the summer as nymphs in the field. Eggs of Stavsolus japonicus and Isoperla aizuana were considered to be deposited in April to May and hatched in September to October in the field. Visible eyes of Stavsolus japonicus and Isoperla aizuana appeared in August. It is likely that the long egg period of Stavsolus japonicus and Isoperla aizuana reflects that these two species spend the summer as dormant eggs in the field.  相似文献

The only large mainland colony of southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) is on Península Valdés, at 42°S, in Argentine Patagonia. Censuses of pups have been carried out regularly there since 1970, and the population grew five‐fold by 2010. Here we use Bayesian modeling tools to make rigorous estimates of the rate of population growth, r, and to estimate survival and recruitment parameters that could account for the growth, incorporating observation error across different census methods. In the 1970s, r= 8%/yr, but has slowed to <1%/yr over the past decade. Using explicit demographic models, we established that the high growth of the 1970s was consistent with adult and juvenile survival at the upper end of published values (0.87/yr adult female survival; 0.40 juvenile survivorship to age four); the decline in the rate of population growth from 1970 to 2010 can be described by density‐dependent reductions in adult and juvenile survival that fall well within published variation. Extrapolating empirical models of population growth rate backwards illustrates that the population could have been an established colony, with 100 pups born per year, between 1915 and 1945, consistent with qualitative observations prior to 1950. We conclude that the Valdés colony was founded by a few immigrants early in the 20th century and has been growing mostly by internal recruitment, with unknown density‐dependent processes causing a reduction in growth and stabilization at 15,000–16,000 pups born.  相似文献
