A new diatom genus and species, Porguenia peruviana Sullivan, is described from an Eocene marine deposit from the Paracas Peninsula, Peru. The valve outline is circular and the areolation is best described as pseudoloculate; spines of any type are lacking. A ring of elongated, densely packed rimoportulae is situated on the secondary marginal ridge. Externally, each rimoportula consists of a long, flattened, fluted upper portion supported by a shorter cylindrical stalk. The processes are winged and exhibit various degrees of curvature of the major axis. Typically, six reniform ocelli of unusual structure are situated centrifugally to the ring of rimoportulae and interrupt the true marginal ridge. Because the perforation plate differs from that of all other ocellus-bearing diatoms, a new term has been introduced for this structure, the diaphoron. The placement and structure of this newly discovered “perforation plate” do not allow Porguenia to be placed in any circumscribed family, although the Triceratiaceae would appear at present to be the most closely related family.  相似文献

The trace fossil Zoophycos is abundant in transgressive, shallow marine carbonates in the Middle Permian (Wordian) Khuff Formation of the Huqf-Haushi Uplift of Interior Oman. It often occurs as part of a complex (compound) trace fossil that comprises two integrated elements: (i) irregular galleries with straight to gently curved tunnels and interconnected shafts, and (ii) simple planar to complex spreiten structures with a marginal tube ( Zoophycos ). The galleries are characterized by irregularly winding, dichotomous branching, large variation in shape and size and circular to elliptical vertical cross-sections. Zoophycos consists of spreiten with a marginal tube, either originating as a simple lobe from the convex segment of a curved tunnel, or forming more complex, subcircular, spreiten systems parallel to bedding. The spreiten were formed by simple strip mining, where the animal defecated without producing faecal pellets. U-shaped marginal tubes indicate that the burrows were well aerated. The complex trace fossil points to combined dwelling and deposit-feeding behaviour, with irregular galleries in the firm substrate and Zoophycos spreiten in the softground below it. It can be assumed that the animal used the open tunnel system mainly for dwelling (domichnion) and possibly suspension feeding, but occasionally changed to deposit feeding while creating the spreiten (fodinichnion). The integration of the irregular galleries (tunnels and interconnected shafts) with the marginal tubes of Zoophycos suggests the same producer for this compound trace fossil. Many modern polychaetes produce very similar galleries within firm and soft substrates, and polychaetes are therefore interpreted as the most likely producers. Similarities between Permian and Triassic Zoophycos suggest comparable trace making behaviour before and after the end-Permian mass extinction.  相似文献

The present paper describes the pollen morphology of Trigonobalanus doichangensis (A. Camus) Forman of Fagaceae. Comparative study on pollen grains was carried out by means of light microscope, scanning and transmission electron microscope. The pollen grains of T. doichangensis are subspheroidal or suboblate but in polar view they are subtriangular, and in equatorial view they are subcircular they are 27.3, 23.1-29.4)×27.3(25.2-29.4) μm in size and 3-colporate goniotreme. The exine is 2-layered, 2.4-4.2μm, thick in apocolpia. The sexine cosists of tectum, bacules and endonexine under TEM. On the basis of pollen shape, type of aperture and exine structure the pollen grains of T. doichangensis are distinguishable, from those of other genera in Fagaceae and it may belong to a new type of Fagaceae.  相似文献

海链藻属(Thalassiosira)和圆筛藻属(Coscinodiscus)的种类繁多,是硅藻门中的大属和代表属。两者的形态学特征具有较多相似之处,易混淆鉴定。通过光学显微镜和电镜观察,比较研究了海链藻和圆筛藻种类的形态学特征。海链藻种类除了具有1~2个唇形突之外,还具有数量较多的支持突,少数种类具有闭合突;筛膜位于壳面内侧;中孔在壳面外侧。而圆筛藻种类只具有数量众多的唇形突,且其中两个较大;筛膜位于壳面外侧;中孔在壳面内侧。由于两属形态学特征的区别只有在电镜下才能清晰观察到,因此尚有较多的分类修订工作需要进行。  相似文献

Six samples collected from the eastern Brazilian continental shelf, along the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo, during the REVIZEE Program were analysed. Three species of Macrocyprina were encountered in these samples. Macrocyprina maddocksae sp. nov. is described. This species is diagnosed by the following combined characteristics: carapace fairly small, its lateral surface with three or four small subcircular patches, one small, subtriangular patch at anteroventral margin, one small, elongate, patch at posteroventral margin; male appendages V strongly asymmetrical, left appendage larger than right, podomere II of left appendage subtriangular, not recurved. Hemipenis subtrapezoidal. Furthermore, M. sp. nov. 3 Brandão, in press and M. sp. are recorded.  相似文献

唇形突是海链藻中常见的一类突起, 其形态学特征和排列方式是重要的分类学依据。绝大多数海链藻只有一个唇形突, 两个唇形突的现象仅报道于极少数海链藻种类。我国关于双唇形突海链藻的报道较少。研究利用扫描电镜(SEM)技术, 对采自我国沿海海域的自然水样, 以及分离获得的单克隆培养藻株进行了形态学观察, 针对其中的海链藻属Thalassiosira Cleve种类开展了形态学的专题研究。报道了4个具有双唇形突的海链藻种类, 分别是有翼海链藻T. bipartita (Rattray) Hallegraeff、脆弱海链藻T. fragilis Fryxell、亨氏海链藻T. hendeyi Hasle &; Fryxell和维斯吉思海链藻T. visurgis Hustedt, 其中有3个为我国新记录种类: 脆弱海链藻、亨氏海链藻和维斯吉思海链藻。对每个种类的形态学特征、生活习性和生态分布进行了描述, 提供了扫描电镜照片, 对相似种类的形态学特征进行了比较研究, 分析了唇形突的变化类型及其分类学价值。  相似文献

Examination of net plankton samples from the Gulf of Tehuantepec (Mexican Pacific) yielded a rare tropical species of the genus Chaetoceros, C. buceros Karsten. This species is conspicuous because of its relatively large size, type of chain formation, and shape of the terminal setae. Electron microscopic study revealed other interesting characteristics: the intercalary values are more lightly silicified than the terminal valves and show a pattern of costae radiating form the center with various annuli (“central hyaline fields”) in the center of the valve face; both kind of valves are perforated by small poroids. Terminal valves possess several (21–30) slitlike and randomly oriented rimoportulae. Important morphological differences exist between the intercalary and the terminal setae. Morphological characters, comparision with related species, and the systematic position are discussed. A new section of the subgenus Hyalochaete, Conspicua, is proposed to include C. buceros.  相似文献

Thalassiosira Cleve is one of the most species-rich marine diatom genera. Previous studies have mainly focused on polar and temperate areas, but recent studies on material from Asian waters suggested that a high and undescribed species diversity of Thalassiosira occurs in Asia. On the basis of plankton samples collected from the South China Sea, a new species, T. sinica sp. nov. Y. Li & Y. Q. Guo is described. The morphology of the cells was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The hypervariable region of the nuclear large-subunit ribosomal DNA and the relatively conserved region of the nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA were sequenced for information on phylogenetic relationships. The living cells are usually solitary and drum-shaped. The areolae on the valve are delicate, small and arranged in fascicles. In addition to a regular ring of marginal fultoportulae on the valve edge, T. sinica possesses one central fultoportula and a number of fultoportulae arranged into 2–3 irregular rings on the valve face. A rimoportula located inside the ring of marginal fultoportulae possesses a long and strong external tube. The valvocopula and the copulae have rows of pores, but the pores on the valvocopula are larger than those on the copulae. Thalassiosira sinica appears to be included in subgroup C sensu Gedde because of a rimoportula with a distinct external tube located on the valve face. The molecular phylogeny, inferred from both SSU and LSU sequences, does, however, not support the validity of subgroup C, as the closest allies of T. sinica here turned out to be T. diporocyclus and T. lundiana, species in which the rimoportulae are located on the valve margin.  相似文献

Specimens of Eupodiscus radiatus Bailey from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico were examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. In contrast to previous studies of this taxon, we report the presence of two, rarely one, rimoportulae (labiate processes) between consecutive ocelli. This finding changes our understanding of the phylogenetic relationships in the family Eupodiscaceae.  相似文献

The micromorphology of the frons and the adjacent regions in young workers (1–24 hr of age) of the Oriental hornet Vespa orientalis and some adult worker hornets is described. The young workers still lack globular secretions at the bases of the setae. Such secretions do occur at the bases of the setae in the adult workers and are composed mainly of the elements Si, Al, S, Mg, Ca, Cl, and Fe. Contiguous with each of the ocelli is a gland that also secretes minerals. Young workers usually have a relatively large concentration of Ca in the glands behind the paired ocelli. The gland associated with the median anterior ocellus opens by an elongated sutura coronalis in the frons and contains various elements, predominantly Si, but also Ca. The setae (hairs) on the frons are arranged in concentric circles around each of the ocelli; they are long in the upper part of the frons but shorten gradually toward the tip of the frons. The tip lacks hair, but the cuticle bears elevated scales that project as cuticular protuberences. It appears that the ocelli and their associated glands, and the entire frons plate with its hairs and glands at the bases of the hairs in this region, comprise an equilibrium “organ” that senses changes in gravity. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are abundant complex macromolecules involved in both reproductive and vegetative plant growth. They are secreted at pollen tube tips in Lilium longiflorum. Here, we report the effect of the (beta-D-glucosyl)3 Yariv phenylglycoside, known to interact with AGPs, on pollen tube extension in several plant species. In Annona cherimola the Yariv reagent clearly inhibited pollen tube extension within 1-2 h of treatment, as demonstrated previously for L. longiflorum, but had no effect on Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium, Aquilegia eximia, and Nicotiana tabacum. With the monoclonal antibody JIM13 we also examined these same species for evidence that they secreted AGPs at their pollen tube tips. Only A. cherimola showed evidence of AGPs at the pollen tube tip as does lily. The Yariv reagent causes arrest of tube growth in both A. cherimola and lily, but its removal from the medium allows regeneration of new tip growth in both species. We show that the site of the new emerging tip in lily can be predicted by localization of AGP secretion. Labeling with JIM13 appeared on the flanks of the arrested tip 1 h after removal of the Yariv reagent from the growth medium. After 4 h, many of the Yariv reagent-treated pollen tubes had regenerated new pollen tubes with the tips brightly labeled by JIM13 and with a collar of AGPs left at the emergence site. During this recovery, esterified pectins colocalized with AGPs. Secretion at the site of the new tip may be important in the initial polarization event that occurs on the flanks of the arrested tube tip and results in a new pollen tube.  相似文献

The feeding basket morphology and stomach content analyses of five Euphausia species (E. recurva, E. nana, E. pacifica, E. mutica and E. similis) were compared to elucidate their feeding ecology. The filter areas of feeding basket of E. pacifica and E. nana were proportionally larger than those of others in the size classes 13-20 mm and <13 mm, respectively, suggesting a high filtering efficiency in these species at each size class. Based on the secondary setal distance, it is suggested that there are three types of feeding basket in five Euphausia species. One is the fine mesh (<5 μm) of E. pacifica and E. nana; a second is the medium (10-20 μm) of E. recurva and E. mutica; and the third is the coarse (20-30 μm) of E. similis. The ability to feed on particles <5 μm would give both species, E. pacifica and E. nana, a great advantage over other species when number of flagellates is high. Stomach content analyses indicated a more omnivorous feeding mode in E. mutica, E. recurva and E. similis and a more herbivorous in E. pacifica and E. nana. This is in agreement with morphological studies of feeding baskets. Increments in the primary and secondary setal distances with increasing size of four Euphausia species, except E. pacifica, were evident, reflecting interspecific differences in food particle sizes utilized. In E. pacifica, however, the morphological similarity should produce intraspecific competition in diet. Using light and electron microscopy, the diatom species Aulacoseira islandica (O. Müll.) Sim. was examined with special emphasis on the following characteristics: structure of the valve areolae, heterovalvy, and distribution of the rimoportulae. The mantle and valve face areolae were pores containing volate occlusions. However, observations only using transmission electron microscopy may result in an incomplete interpretation because of the fragility of the dissected system of volae. Relief valves with a stepped mantle and intaglio valves with a plain mantle occurred. Another form of heterovalvy resulted from the formation of separation valves. Linking valves had spatulate spines while separation valves bore tapering spines. In Aulacoseira, the rimoportulae usually occurred near the “Ringleiste.” The presence of several rimoportulae on the mantle was one of the most striking features in Aulacoseira islandica.  相似文献

Tooth crown morphology plays a central role in hominin systematics, but the removal of the original outer enamel surface by dental attrition often eliminates from consideration the type of detailed crown morphology that has been shown to discriminate among hominin taxa. This reduces the size of samples available for study. The enamel-dentine junction (EDJ) is the developmental precursor and primary contributor to the morphology of the unworn outer enamel surface, and its morphology is only affected after considerable attrition. In this paper, we explore whether the form of the EDJ can be used to distinguish between the mandibular molars of two southern African fossil hominins: Paranthropus (or Australopithecus) robustus and Australopithecus africanus. After micro-computed tomographic scanning the molar sample, we made high-resolution images of the EDJ and used geometric morphometrics to compare EDJ shape differences between species, in addition to documenting metameric variation along the molar row within each species. Landmarks were collected along the marginal ridge that runs between adjacent dentine horns and around the circumference of the cervix. Our results suggest that the morphology of the EDJ can distinguish lower molars of these southern African hominins, and it can discriminate first, second, and third molars within each taxon. These results confirm previous findings that the EDJ preserves taxonomically valuable shape information in worn teeth. Mean differences in EDJ shape, in particular dentine horn height, crown height, and cervix shape, are more marked between adjacent molars within each taxon than for the same molar between the two taxa.  相似文献

The behavior and role of the microtubule (MT) and actin-myosin components of the cytoskeleton during pollen tube growth in two species of Pinus were studied using anti--tubulin, rhodamine-phalloidin, anti-myosin, and the appropriate inhibitors. Within germinated pollen tubes MTs were arranged obliquely or transversely, but in elongated tubes they were arranged along the tube's long axis. MTs were localized in the tube tip region, excluding the basal part. Altered growth was found in pollen tubes treated with colchicine; the tips of many pollen tubes incubated in the liquid medium were branched and/or rounded, and those in the agar medium were divided into many branches. Both the branching and the rounding were considered to be caused by the disturbance of polarizing growth of the tube due to MT disorganization with colchicine treatment. Actin filaments (F-actin) were found in the major parts of many pollen tubes along their long axis, excluding the tip region. In a few tubes, however, F-actin was distributed throughout the tube. The areas in the pollen tube containing F-actin were filled with abundant cytoplasmic granules, but the areas without F-actin had very few granules. The tube nucleus, which migrated from the grain area into the tube, was closely associated with F-actin. Germination of pollen grains treated with cytochalasin B was little affected, but further tube elongation was inhibited. Myosin was identified on cytoplasmic granules and to a lesser extent on the tube nucleus in the pollen tubes. Several granules were attached to the nuclear envelope. Tube growth was completely inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide treatment. In generative cells that were retained in the pollen grain, both MT and F-actin networks were observed. Myosin was localized on the cytoplasmic granules but not on the cell surface. In conclusion, it was shown that actin-myosin and MTs were present in gymnospermous Pinus pollen tubes and it is suggested that the former contributed to outgrowth of the tubes and the latter contributed to polarized growth. Several differences in the behavior of cytoskeletal elements in generative cells compared to angiosperms were revealed and are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes a new diatom species, Aulacoseira calypsi Tremarin, Torgan & Ludwig, from specimens in plankton samples from Água Preta lake. This Amazonian lake is a shallow mesotrophic environment situated in northern Brazil. The species is characterized by long filaments united by spatulate linking spines, obovate to conic separation spines, a valve surface variably ornamented, straight striae on the mantle, a narrow ringleist, and one row of sessile rimoportulae near the ringleist. Aulacoseira calypsi's morphometric features are compared with the following similar species: Aulacoseira nygaardii (Camburn) Camburn & Charles, Aulacoseira lacustris (Grunow) Krammer, Aulacoseira coroniformis Pearce & Cremer, Aulacoseira occulta Siver & Hamilton, Aulacoseira lancea Siver & Hamilton, Aulacoseira gessneri (Hustedt) Simonsen, and Aulacoseira islandica (Müller) Simonsen. The species shares similarities as to frustule size, striation pattern, and narrowness of ringleist; but differs in the morphology of separation and linking spines, and the number and position of the rimoportulae.  相似文献

海链藻属(Thalassiosira Cleve)是硅藻门中物种多样性最为丰富的大属之一,广泛分布于全球各类水体。目前沿用的海链藻属分类体系是基于形态特征建立的,尤其是电镜下的超微特征具有重要的分类价值。然而,也有研究认为某些形态特征存在不稳定或变化的情况,应对其开展二次研究和重新评估。故此,本文选择全球近岸广布种艾伦海链藻(T.allen Takano)作为典型代表,基于建立的单克隆培养株系,结合传统形态学方法和现代分子生物学技术,对其重要形态特征进行了二次研究。结果显示:(1)艾伦海链藻壳面孔纹的排列方式存在一定的变化,呈切线形或偏心状;壳缘唇形突的位置多有变化,占据一个壳缘支持突的位置、或位于两个壳缘支持突正中间、或靠近其中一个。艾伦海链藻这两个特征并不具有较高的稳定性,其分类学意义或应降低;(2)壳缘不具有肋纹,此特征相对稳定,可作为艾伦海链藻的识别特征之一;(3)艾伦海链藻具有较保守的遗传多样性,尚未发现(拟)隐形种。结合其它海链藻的形态学报道,我们认为孔纹排列方式易受环境的影响,稳定性较差,在分类时应慎重应用;壳缘唇形突的位置在少数海链藻属物种中易发生变化,分类时应视具体物种而针对性应用;支持突等突起特征较为稳定,在海链藻属物种的分类体系中仍可作为重要依据;艾伦海链藻中壳缘肋纹具有较好的稳定性,可作为分类依据,但在其它海链藻属物种中是否也具有很好的分类价值,还需要更多的研究加以验证;分子信息在形态特征上的二次研究和评价中具有重要应用价值,但目前相关分子数据的缺乏和不足限制了对其进一步的研究。本研究对重新评估艾伦海链藻形态特征的分类学价值、完善现存的分类学体系提供了参考。  相似文献

The proper size of epithelial tubes is critical for the function of the lung, kidney, vascular system and other organs, but the genetic and cellular mechanisms that control epithelial tube size are unknown. We investigated tube size control in the embryonic and larval tracheal (respiratory) system of Drosophila. A morphometric analysis showed that primary tracheal branches have characteristic sizes that undergo programmed changes during development. Branches grow at different rates and their diameters and lengths are regulated independently: tube length increases gradually throughout development, whereas tube diameter increases abruptly at discrete times in development. Cellular analysis and manipulation of tracheal cell number using cell-cycle mutations demonstrated that tube size is not dictated by the specific number or shape of the tracheal cells that constitute it. Rather, tube size appears to be controlled by coordinately regulating the apical (lumenal) surface of tracheal cells. Genetic analysis showed that tube sizes are specified early by branch identity genes, and the subsequent enlargement of branches to their mature sizes and maintenance of the expanded tubes involves a new set of genes described here, which we call tube expansion genes. This work establishes a genetic system for investigating tube size regulation, and provides an outline of the genetic program and cellular events underlying tracheal tube size control.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical localization of polygalacturonic acid (pectin) and methyl-esterified pectin in the walls of pollen tubes of 20 species of flowering plants grown in vitro was investigated by using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) JIM5 and JIM7 and by means of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). In general, periodic annular deposits of pectins were found coating the tube wall in species possessing solid styles, and a more uniform pectin sheath in tube walls in species having hollow styles or no styles. We hypothesize that the periodic ring-like structure of the pectin sheath reinforces pollen tubes for passing through the transmitting tract in the style. Esterified pectin which prevents Ca2+-induced gelification of pectate is located predominantly at the apex. This implies that pectin esterification is related to tip wall loosening that is required for cell wall expansion during tip growth of pollen tubes. The occurrence of unesterified pectins in other areas of pollen tube walls suggests that de-esterification of pectin following tip expansion leads to a more rigid form of pectin that contributes to the construction of the pollen tube wall.  相似文献
