Erythronium dens-canis is a geophyte which produces a single flower each season. The fruits produce small seeds with relatively large elaiosomes. We performed experiments to investigate primary and secondary seed dispersal mechanisms of this species in different habitats in the western part of the Cantabrian Range in northwest Spain. Sticky traps were used to measure primary dispersal of seeds up to 0.5 m from mother plants. Seed cafeteria experiments were performed in different habitats to examine the role of ants and rodents in secondary seed transport and seed predation. Our results indicate that: (a) primary seed dispersal is positively skewed (99% of seeds fall within 20 cm of the mother plant) and seed dispersal distances vary significantly among plants; (b) secondary dispersal is exclusively by myrmecochory, although the proportion of seeds removed by ants differs significantly among habitats; (c) ant species composition and abundances vary among habitats; and (d) freshly dropped seeds are more likely to be removed than seeds that have begun to dry out. We conclude that secondary dispersal of seeds is greatly influenced by habitat but not by small-scale microhabitat. Ecological models can act as interesting tools to support decision-making in river restoration management. In particular models which are capable of predicting the habitat requirements of species are of considerable importance to ensure that the planned actions have the desired effects on the aquatic ecosystem. To this end, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were tested and optimized for the prediction of the habitat suitability for Gammarus pulex, a relevant indicator species in water quality assessment. Although ANN models are in general quite robust with a rather high predictive reliability, the model performance had to be increased with regard to simulations for river restoration management. In particular, it has been shown that spatial and temporal expert-rules could possibly be included. Migration dynamics of downstream drift and upstream migration of the organisms and migration barriers along the river (weirs, culverted river sections,␣...) might indeed deliver important additional information on the effectiveness of the restoration plans, and also on the timing of the expected effects. In this context, an additional in-stream migration model for Gammarus pulex was developed. This migration model, implemented in a Geographical Information System (GIS), has been used to simulate a practical river restoration scenario for a river in Flanders, Belgium. The case study illustrated that the removal of a weir, at a particular site, resulted in the improvement of the habitat suitability for Gammarus pulex. The ANN models predicted that after restoration the habitat was suitable again for Gammarus pulex. The migration model indicated that the restored parts of the river would be recolonized within about 2 months. In this way, decision makers can have an idea whether and when a restoration option will have a desired effect.  相似文献

Abstract Tree gaps may be important habitats for the establishment and spread of understory herbs in eastern (US) deciduous forests. Data from past studies, however, have not shown any clear patterns for either species diversity or increased percent cover. The lack of clear patterns of response to gaps by herbs may be due to evolutionary differences among species or, in part, due to the fact that most studies have been short-term and long-term patterns have, therefore, not been observed. In addition, few studies have considered the responses of individual genets and/or ramets. We have been conducting a long-term study of Cynoglossum virginianum , now in its 16th year, to determine subpopulation and individuals' responses in gap and non-gap habitats. A larger percentage of individuals flowered in the gap subpopulation shortly after it was created. Seed production rates were also higher in the gap subpopulation. The long-term benefits gained by the short-term flowering response have, however, been few as all but two of the seedlings produced within a few years of gap formation have died. In addition, all of individuals that flowered and produced seeds decreased in size and most have remained in the smaller size classes. In addition, only one of the individuals in the gap subpopulation has flowered since the initial flowering response while plants in non-gap subpopulations have flowered and produced seeds throughout the study period. Gaps may only be beneficial to C. virginianum if seeds are dispersed into non-gap areas or if seeds can remain dormant in the soil until conditions are more suitable for seedling survival.  相似文献

The distribution of four morphologically similar and narrowly endemic Niphargus species living mainly in surface waters of the western Dinaric region was studied. The study area consists of limestone and marls-sandstone (flysch) patches. The variable chemical structure of the flysch affects water conductivity and carbonatic hardness. N. timavi inhabits surface and subterranean waters of low conductivity and carbonatic hardness, both on limestone and flysch. N. spinulifemur is restricted to surface waters with high conductivity and higher carbonatic hardness, exclusively on flysch areas. N. vinodolensis sp. n., described herein, lives both on karst and flysch, where waters exhibit intermediate values of conductivity and carbonatic hardness. N. krameri inhabits surface and subterranean waters with high conductivity and high carbonatic hardness, both on limestone and flysch. This species is in the course of morphological differentiation with three morphological races, probably due to low dispersal ability. The studied species probably do not constitute a monophylum. The easternmost species, N. vinodolensis shows (morphologically, molecularly) close relations with the northeast-Italian N. elegans and with middle-Dalmatian N. illidzensis dalmatinus. It is possible that they differentiated from a common ancestor which inhabited the dry bottom of the northern Adriatic, exposed during the last glacial. We assume that the reasons for the high degree of endemism are historical changes of hydrographical regimes and sea transgressions–regressions. Poor migratory abilities in a geologically diverse landscape restricted further dispersal.  相似文献

Summary The spatial pattern of recruitment and seedling survival was studied in an ant-dispersed sedge (Carex pilulifera L.) in a forest clearing in Denmark. Seedlings were generally more aggregated than juvenile and adult plants. Recruitment distances were skewed towards larger values. While 72% plants of presumably ant-dispersed origin survived for 5 years, only 13% auto-dispersed plants were still alive, predominantly as persistent seedlings. The survivorship showed a negative exponential decrease (Deevey type II) with an expected half-life of 17 months for auto-, and 10 years for ant-dispersed plants. Growth-rate and fecundity were significantly larger for ant-dispersed plants than for auto-dispersed plants. Computer simulation was used to test three different dispersal models and two mortality types on the recruitment pattern observed in the field. The simulations confirmed the importance of ant dispersal for recruitment, but gave no conclusive evidence for evaluating recruitment from ant-nests. High mortality levels, comparable to observed predation levels, were needed to simulate field conditions. Density-dependent mortality proved more powerful than distance-dependent mortality in the simulations. Results are discussed in the context of current hypotheses of seed dispersal. While the directed dispersal hypothesis could not be rejected, results were generally more favourable to the escape hypothesis.  相似文献

We compare the results of four experiments, conducted at different times and with different protocols, that explored the relationship between frequency-dependent selection and prey density in wild birds feeding on artificial populations of coloured baits. One (experiment 4) used pastry baits that differed only in the presence or absence of a red stripe, and this experiment provided no evidence for any kind of selective behaviour. The other three experiments used green and brown baits, and they all provided evidence for a trend towards increasing anti-apostatic selection with high densities (>100 baits m–2). However, one of these (experiment 3) provided no evidence for frequency-dependent selection at low densities (0.5–20 baits m–2), while the other two experiments concurred in suggesting a trend towards increasing apostatic selection with low densities (down to 2 baits m–2). Together, these experiments both support and qualify the published findings of experiment 1 that frequency- dependent selection by wild birds on bait populations is modified by density. Experiment 4 indicates that frequency-dependent selection may break down entirely if bait types are too similar, while experiment 3 indicates that some details of this trend with density will depend either on the protocol used or on exogenous changes in the birds’ feeding behaviour. The development of the Neotropical predatory pentatomid Brontocoris tabidus on an artificial diet based on beef meat and liver was evaluated. The predator showed significantly longer nymphal development and lower adult weights on this diet than when reared on pupae of the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. The survival of nymphs fed exclusively on the artificial diet was somewhat lower compared with feeding on T. molitor pupae. When B. tabidus was bred on this artificial diet during part of its nymphal period i.e. during the second; second and third; and second, third and fourth instars , and was subsequently returned to T. molitor pupae, the predator nymphs completed the nymphal stage with a developmental rate similar to that of nymphs fed on live prey throughout. The adults attained after switching from the artificial diet to live prey from the third and fourth instar onwards had similar weights to those in the control. Considering the relatively good results obtained with B. tabidus and other members of the pentatomid subfamily Asopinae, this meat-based diet may be a valuable alternative for use in the mass production of predatory pentatomids.  相似文献

Insects typically spend the winter in a species‐specific diapause stage. The speckled wood butterfly, Pararge aegeria, is unique in having two alternative diapause stages, hibernating as larvae or pupae. In southern Sweden this creates a seasonal flight pattern with four annual adult flight periods: the first in May (pupal diapause), the second in June (larval diapause), and the third and fourth directly developing offspring generations in July and August, respectively. We address the raison d'être of the two diapause pathways by (1) outdoor rearing of cohorts, and (2) performing transect censuses throughout the season for 20 years. We contend that an early start of next season provides a benefit accruing to pupal diapause; conversely, a large proportion of the offspring from adults of the fourth flight peak are unable to reach the pupal stage before winter, providing a benefit accruing to larval winter diapause. The results obtained show that the two hibernation pathways are unlikely to be genetically distinct because of a strong overlap between the two offspring generations, and because sibling offspring from the third and fourth flight periods are likely to choose either of the two hibernation pathways, thereby resulting in a genetic mixing of the pathways. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 635–649.  相似文献

1 The dispersal of Ips typographus L. (Col., Scolytidae) was studied using a mark–release–recapture approach in a grid of traps equipped with pheromone lures of release rates of about 8.4 mg/day of 2‐methyl‐3‐buten‐2‐ol (MB) and 0.29 mg/day of (S)‐cis‐verbenol (cV) in experiment 1, and 1.2 mg/day of MB and 0.04 mg/day of cV in experiment 2. 2 We investigated whether beetle dispersal reflected the simple diffusion pattern observed in previous I. typographus experiments, for which attractant release rates generally approached 50 mg/day of MB and 1 mg/day of cV. We also examined how environmental parameters (wind) and human activities (felling) could influence the beetles' flight. 3 The recapture percentage was higher in experiment 1 than in experiment 2: respectively, 7.0% (with 64 traps) and 2.3% (with 100 traps) of the beetles that took off were caught in the traps. 4 With the higher release rate (experiment 1), trap catches decreased with increased distance, whereas with the lower release rate (experiment 2), trap catches rose between 50 and 100 m then decreased with increasing distance. 5 Flight was little orientated by prevailing wind directions, a feature probably explained by the low wind speeds (0–1.2 m/s) observed throughout the study. 6 High trap catches of unmarked beetles close to areas undergoing thinning activities suggest that the presence of freshly cut spruce and larch material could have an influence on dispersal, attracting the beetles into the felling area. 1. Costs of coexistence for species with indirect resource competition usually increase monotonically with competitor numbers. Very little is known though about the shape of the cost function for species with direct interference competition. 2. Here we report the results of an experiment with two vole species in artificial coexistence in large enclosures, where density of the dominant competitor species (Microtus agrestis) was manipulated. Experimental populations of the subordinate vole species (Clethrionomys glareolus) were composed of same aged individuals to study distribution of costs of coexistence with a dominant species within an age-cohort. 3. Survival and space use decreased gradually with increasing field vole numbers. Thus, responses to interference competition in our system appeared to be similar as expected from resource competition. The total number of breeders was stable. Reproductive characteristics such as the timing of breeding, and the litter size were not affected. In the single species enclosures a proportion of surviving individuals were not able to establish a breeding territory against stronger conspecifics. Under competition with heterospecifics such nonbreeders suffered high mortality, whereas the breeders survived. 4. Combined interference of dominant conspecifics and heterospecifics probably increased the frequency of aggressive interactions, social stress and mortality for the weaker individuals within a homogeneous age cohort of the subordinate competitor population. 5. Our results suggest, that in open systems where bank voles are outcompeted over the breeding season by faster reproducing field voles, animals able to establish a territory may be able to withstand competitor pressure, while nonbreeding bank vole individuals are forced to emigrate to suboptimal forest habitats.  相似文献

Baits including 0.1% of ethyl 2-(4-((1,4-dioxaspiro [4.5]dec-6-yl) methyl) phenoxy) ethylcarbamate were applied in two buildings containing 46 apartments with various degrees of infestation of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). During a yearly experiment, generally 8 baits were placed in each apartment and replenished monthly at which time cockroach population density, demographic structure, and percentage of morphologically deformed adults were determined from specimens captured by stickytrap sampling. Initial growth of the cockroach population observed during the first two months after deposition of the baits was followed by an asymptotical decrease. Only 2.5% of the initial population remained at the end of the experiment. Although adults with twisted wings (sterile) constituted only 70% of the total adult catches, the decrease of the nymph/adult ratio from 2.9 to 0.7 indicated a far more profound inhibitory effect on cockroach reproduction. This study shows that baits might be an efficient alternative to juvenoid formulations currently in use for control of the German cockroach.  相似文献

1. Few studies have directly addressed the role played by parasites in the structure and function of ecosystems. Parasites influence the behaviour, reproduction and overall fitness of their hosts, but have been usually overlooked in community and ecosystem‐level studies. We investigated the effects of trematode parasites on snail–periphyton interactions. 2. Physa  acuta (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) snails infected with the trematode Posthodiplostomum minimum (often >30% of within‐shell biomass) grazed more rapidly than uninfected snails. Trematode effects on snail grazing indirectly affected the standing stock and community structure of periphyton. Populations of snails with 50% infected individuals reduced algal biomass by 20% more than populations with lesser (10% or 0%) infection rates. 3. The alga Cladophora glomerata dominated periphyton communities grazed by snail populations with 50% infection rates, whereas diatoms and blue–green algal taxa dominated when grazed by snail populations with lower infection rates. 4. Thus, trematodes indirectly affected periphyton communities by altering host snail behaviour, a trait‐mediated indirect effect. These results indicate that trematodes can indirectly influence benthic community structure beyond simple population fitness, with possible related effects on ecosystem function.  相似文献

A field study was conducted to determine the efficiency of Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata L.), an arsenic hyperaccumulator, on removal of arsenic from soil at an arsenic-contaminated site. Chinese brake ferns were planted on a site previously used to treat wood with chromated copper arsenate (CCA). Arsenic concentrations in surface and profile soil samples were determined for 2000, 2001, and 2002. In both 2001 and 2002, senesced and senescing fronds only, as well as all fronds, were harvested. Frond arsenic concentrations were not significantly different between the three harvests. Compared to senesced fronds, live fronds resulted in the greatest amount of arsenic removal. There were no significant differences in soil arsenic concentrations between 2000, 2001, and 2002, primarily due to the extreme variability in soil arsenic concentrations. However, the mean surface soil arsenic was reduced from 190 to 140 mg kg(-1). Approximately 19.3 g of arsenic were removed from the soil by Chinese brake fern. Therefore, this fern is capable of accumulating arsenic from the CCA -contaminated site and may be competitive, in terms of cost, to conventional remediation systems. However, better agronomic practices are needed to enhance plant growth and arsenic uptake to obtain maximum soil arsenic removal and to minimize remediation time.  相似文献

Abstract One application of DNA barcoding is species identification based on sequences of a short and standardized DNA region. In plants, various DNA regions, alone or in combination, have been proposed and investigated, but consensus on a universal plant barcode remains elusive. In this study, we tested the utility of four candidate barcoding regions (rbcL, matK, trnHpsbA, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)) as DNA barcodes for discriminating species in a large and hemiparasitic genus Pedicularis (Orobanchaceae). Amplification and sequencing was successful using single primer pairs for rbcL, trnH‐psbA, and ITS, whereas two primer pairs were required for matK. Patterns of sequence divergence commonly showed a “barcoding gap”, that is, a bimodal frequency distribution of pairwise distances representing genetic diversity within and between species, respectively. Considering primer universality, ease of amplification and sequencing, and performance in discriminating species, we found the most effective single‐region barcode for Pedicularis to be ITS, and the most effective two‐region barcode to be rbcL + ITS. Both discriminated at least 78% of the 88 species and correctly identified at least 89% of the sequences in our sample, and were effective in placing unidentified samples in known species groups. Our results suggest that DNA barcoding has the potential to aid taxonomic research in Pedicularis, a species‐rich cosmopolitan clade much in need of revision, as well as ecological studies in its center of diversity, the Hengduan Mountains region of China.  相似文献

Somatic cell and gene therapy involve the application of biological technologies to an individual patient through the use of living cells which provide a therapeutic benefit (Aliski, 1991). Various forms of cellular and gene therapies are being developed and evaluated in an increasing number of clinical trials for congential and acquired disorders. The potential and progress of these therapeutic applications have resulted in an increasing effort by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop the regulatory framework under which these therapeutic approaches would insure safety and efficacy, the primary mandate of the FDA.Over five years ago Cellcor began to define the parameters, specifications, and conditions relevant to a Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) program that has evolved to insure safety and maximize the efficacy of applications of the company'sex vivo technology, autolymphocyte therapy. Autolymphocyte therapy is an outpatient form of somatic cell immunotherapy based upon the infusion of T cells that have been activatedex vivo using a combination of previously generated autologous cytokines and an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody.We have been able to demonstrate the feasibility for the safe, controlled, and consistent preparation and delivery of a cellular therapy by application of relevant GMP regulations. This presentation reviews aspects of this program and chronicles our experience which at present amounts to over 4400 infusions for over 700 patients. This program provides a high degree of assurance that a cellular therapy program can be carried out in a multisite mode involving hundreds of patients through the strict adherence to cGMP as set forth in existing regulations. It would be prudent that developers of cellular andex vivo gene therapies establish a similar cell processing and QA/QC infrastructure at an early developmental stage to optimize safety and reproducibility and facilitate regulatory review.  相似文献
