The display was composed of four boxes, horizontally aligned above the fixation point. In Experiment I, each box was cued by a digit shown at fixation. In Experiment II there were only two numeric cues, signalling the inner or the outer boxes, depending on the experimental condition. The subject was instructed to orient attention to the cued box, and to respond to the imperative stimulus as fast as possible, wherever it appeared. By using four time interval (SOAs), we tried to determine the route covered by attention movements. In Experiment I, with the shortest SOA (100 msec), it was shown that attention does not reach the cued box through a direct path. Rather it moves first on the inner boxes, thereafter focusing on the cued location. The same results were obtained in Experiment II, where the cue directed attention to the inner boxes. When the external boxes were cued, however, this trend was not observed.  相似文献

Although it is well known that attention to a visual or auditory stimulus can enhance its perception, less is known concerning the effects of attention on the perception of natural tactile stimuli. The present study was conducted to examine the magnitude of the effect of cross-modal manipulations of attention in human subjects on the detection of weak, low-frequency vibrotactile stimuli delivered to the glabrous skin of the finger pad of the right index finger via an Optacon. Three suprathreshold vibrotactile arrays (40 Hz), varying in the number of activated pegs and hence the area of skin stimulated, were used. Subjects were trained to detect the occurrence of vibrotactile or visual stimuli and to respond by pressing a foot pedal as quickly as possible thereafter. Two instructional lights were used to cue the subjects as to which stimulus modality they should attend, in three experimental conditions. In the first cue condition, the forthcoming stimulus modality was indicated by the illumination of its associated light. In the second cue condition, both instructional lights were illuminated, and the subjects were asked to divide their attention equally between the two modalities. In the third cue condition, the stimulus modality was falsely indicated by the illumination of the cue not associated with the stimulus to be presented. Reaction times (RTs) were calculated for each trial. For each modality, tactile and visual, the RTs varied significantly with the cue condition, with the mean RT changing in a graded manner across the experimental conditions (being shortest for the correctly cued condition, intermediate for the neutrally cued condition, and longest for the incorrectly cued condition.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In the present experiments two different attention modalities were investigated: focused and distributed attention. In Experiment 1 manual choice reaction times to lateralized visual stimuli were measured. Visual stimuli (rectangles or squares) were presented in one of six positions along the horizontal axis. In between each position a digit 1 to 5 was permanently displayed. The subjects were instructed to switch their attention to one of the five digits and to respond as fast as possible to the stimulus target flashed either on the right or on the left of the focus of attention. The only difference in Experiment 2 was that the digit stayed on 100 msec only. The results show the importance of a visual cue (Exp. 1) for focused attention. In the absence of a permanent visual cue (Exp. 2) only distributed attention can be employed.  相似文献

Prior studies have shown that spatial attention modulates early visual cortex retinotopically, resulting in enhanced processing of external perceptual representations. However, it is not clear whether the same visual areas are modulated when attention is focused on, and shifted within a working memory representation. In the current fMRI study participants were asked to memorize an array containing four stimuli. After a delay, participants were presented with a verbal cue instructing them to actively maintain the location of one of the stimuli in working memory. Additionally, on a number of trials a second verbal cue instructed participants to switch attention to the location of another stimulus within the memorized representation. Results of the study showed that changes in the BOLD pattern closely followed the locus of attention within the working memory representation. A decrease in BOLD-activity (V1-V3) was observed at ROIs coding a memory location when participants switched away from this location, whereas an increase was observed when participants switched towards this location. Continuous increased activity was obtained at the memorized location when participants did not switch. This study shows that shifting attention within memory representations activates the earliest parts of visual cortex (including V1) in a retinotopic fashion. We conclude that even in the absence of visual stimulation, early visual areas support shifting of attention within memorized representations, similar to when attention is shifted in the outside world. The relationship between visual working memory and visual mental imagery is discussed in light of the current findings.  相似文献

Siberian chipmunks were presented with snakes and 4 control animals (tortoises, frogs, eels, quails) in a large outdoor pen to examine whether the snakedirected behavior of the chipmunk is a response to identifying the snake or simply an exploratory behavior toward generally strange objects. The animals were presented to chipmunks in 3 manners; tethered, anesthetized, and in perforated opaque boxes and in wire netting boxes. In “tethered” and “anesthetized”, chipmunks responded significantly more intensively to snakes than to other animals. When the animals were presented in the boxes, that is, when chipmunks could perceive only olfactory stimulus from the animals, they also showed the strongest response to snakes. The results suggest that 1) snake-directed behavior of chipmunks is not a general exploratory response toward strange objects but a response to identifying the snakes, and that 2) olfaction is an important cue for the chipmunks to identify snakes.  相似文献

When a visual stimulus suddenly appears, it captures attention, producing a transient improvement of performance on basic visual tasks. We investigate the effect of transient attention on stimulus representations in early visual areas using rapid event-related fMRI. Participants discriminated the orientation of one of two gratings preceded or followed by a nonpredictive peripheral cue. Compared to control conditions, precueing the target location improved performance and produced a larger fMRI response in corresponding retinotopic areas. This enhancement progressively increased from striate to extrastriate areas. Control conditions indicated that the enhanced fMRI response was not due to sensory summation of cue and target signals. Thus, an uninformative precue increases both perceptual performance and the concomitant stimulus-evoked activity in early visual areas. These results provide evidence regarding the retinotopically specific neural correlate for the effects of transient attention on early vision.  相似文献

Following reports of inconsistent nest choice by hens in groups, choice of nest boxes by solitary hens was investigated. Thirty-two hens of a White Leghorn strain were each isolated with six nest boxes while they laid six eggs. From 16 hens, eggs were collected daily. Only one of these birds laid all her eggs in one nest box, and others used up to four boxes. The other 16 were allowed to accumulate eggs, and these were significantly more consistent in nest choice. Five used only one box. However, the other 11 of this group showed incomplete consistency. An explanation for inconsistent nest choice was suggested by a second experiment. The importance of enclosure in nest-site selection was tested in hens of White Leghorn and Rhode Island Red strains. Individuals about to lay their first egg were isolated with a choice of two types of nest box, selected from five types of different enclosure. Exposed nests, of similar dimensions to natural nests, were rarely used by either strain. By contrast, more enclosed nests were strongly selected. These results indicate that enclosure is an important stimulus in nest-site selection, and that artificial nest boxes, which are more enclosed than natural sites, act as super-normal stimuli (or “super-stimuli”). Choices between super-stimuli are likely to be equivocal, which accounts for inconsistency in the use of nest boxes and other features of the nesting behaviour of domestic hens.  相似文献

Where do the bottlenecks for information and attention lie when our visual system processes incoming stimuli? The human visual system encodes the incoming stimulus and transfers its contents into three major memory systems with increasing time scales, viz., sensory (or iconic) memory, visual short-term memory (VSTM), and long-term memory (LTM). It is commonly believed that the major bottleneck of information processing resides in VSTM. In contrast to this view, we show major bottlenecks for motion processing prior to VSTM. In the first experiment, we examined bottlenecks at the stimulus encoding stage through a partial-report technique by delivering the cue immediately at the end of the stimulus presentation. In the second experiment, we varied the cue delay to investigate sensory memory and VSTM. Performance decayed exponentially as a function of cue delay and we used the time-constant of the exponential-decay to demarcate sensory memory from VSTM. We then decomposed performance in terms of quality and quantity measures to analyze bottlenecks along these dimensions. In terms of the quality of information, two thirds to three quarters of the motion-processing bottleneck occurs in stimulus encoding rather than memory stages. In terms of the quantity of information, the motion-processing bottleneck is distributed, with the stimulus-encoding stage accounting for one third of the bottleneck. The bottleneck for the stimulus-encoding stage is dominated by the selection compared to the filtering function of attention. We also found that the filtering function of attention is operating mainly at the sensory memory stage in a specific manner, i.e., influencing only quantity and sparing quality. These results provide a novel and more complete understanding of information processing and storage bottlenecks for motion processing.  相似文献

Saccadic latency and averaged EEG-potentials connected with switching on of the set and cue visual stimuli were examined in 12 right-handed healthy subjects in M. Posner's "cost-benefit" experimental paradigm. It was shown that attention was reflected in parameters of positive potential P100 evoked by switching on of set and cue stimuli and P300 and slow positive wave PMP1 evoked by switching on of the set stimulus in the relevant conditions. The spatiotemporal pattern of P100 probably reflects the involvement of the frontoparietal network of spacial attention in the perception of a relevant stimulus. Prevalence of the P300 and PMP1 potentials in the right parietal cortex suggests that these potentials reflect processes of space attention and visual fixation. Late positive potentials in a 600-900-ms interval after switching on of the set stimulus were found. Their amplitude was higher in backward averaging and they were predominantly localized in the left frontal cortex. These findings suggest that the late potentials reflect the anticipation and motor attention processes.  相似文献

We examined the local field potential of the hippocampus to monitor brain states during a conditional discrimination task, in order to elucidate the relationship between ongoing brain states and a conditioned motor reflex. Five 10-week-old Wistar/ST male rats underwent a serial feature positive conditional discrimination task in eyeblink conditioning using a preceding light stimulus as a conditional cue for reinforced trials. In this task, a 2-s light stimulus signaled that the following 350-ms tone (conditioned stimulus) was reinforced with a co-terminating 100-ms periorbital electrical shock. The interval between the end of conditional cue and the onset of the conditioned stimulus was 4±1 s. The conditioned stimulus was not reinforced when the light was not presented. Animals successfully utilized the light stimulus as a conditional cue to drive differential responses to the identical conditioned stimulus. We found that presentation of the conditional cue elicited hippocampal theta oscillations, which persisted during the interval of conditional cue and the conditioned stimulus. Moreover, expression of the conditioned response to the tone (conditioned stimulus) was correlated with the appearance of theta oscillations immediately before the conditioned stimulus. These data support hippocampal involvement in the network underlying a conditional discrimination task in eyeblink conditioning. They also suggest that the preceding hippocampal activity can determine information processing of the tone stimulus in the cerebellum and its associated circuits.  相似文献

Sprague Dawley albino rats were trained to discriminate an internal stimulus associated with CGS 9896, a non-sedating pyrazoloquinoline that exhibits anxiolytic activity in animals. Classical anxiolytics (diazepam and meprobamate) and proposed anxiolytic drugs having low sedative potential (CL 218,872 and tracazolate) generalized to the CGS 9896 discriminative cue. The CGS 9896 cue appeared to be mediated by a pure anxiolytic action as previous research has shown that this compound does not produce sedation or muscle relaxation. As such, the CGS 9896 stimulus would have both research and clinical application in the investigation of selective anxiomodulation. This is the first report of discriminative stimuli established on one of the newer atypical anxiolytics in which the discriminative cue appeared related to an anxiolytic effect.  相似文献

We explored the ability of leaf-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri) to learn the location of a food reward by using thermal information as an orientation cue. During training of single workers, the conditioned stimulus was a distant thermal source placed frontally, 15 mm away from a platform having a leaf fragment as reward. After training, single workers were confronted with the choice between two sides, one being coupled, in a pseudo-randomized design, with a thermal stimulus heated 5 degrees C above environmental temperature. After 10 learning trials, workers significantly chose the side with the thermal stimulus. This showed that workers can use thermal information for spatial orientation in the context of foraging, which may help them to locate, for instance, highly attractive sun-exposed leaves. Thermal radiation alone as orientation cue was sufficient to allow learning, since preclusion of thermal convection during training and test did not impair workers' response. Shielding of both thorax and gaster from the thermal source did not weaken learning, suggesting the sole participation of head and antennae in temperature reception. A thermal stimulus heated 1 degrees C above environmental temperature could not be used as a learned orientation cue, even when foragers were allowed to directly contact the thermal source.  相似文献

Male and female chicks were trained to discriminate between two boxes for food reinforcement. The correct box was indicated by a colour cue (red or brown) and a position cue (right or left). After learning, the colour and the position cues were dissociated: the right-left location of the two boxes was alternated between trials according to a semi-random sequence. The chicks were thus retrained to discriminate either on the basis of colour (irrespective of position) or on the basis of position (irrespective of colour). There were no sex differences, during training, with both position and colour cues. However, during re-training females performed better on the colour learning task and males performed better on the position learning task.  相似文献

The attentional field resulting from the presentation of peripheral cues; which were either informative or non informative about the position of the imperative stimulus, was studied. Different time intervals between cue and stimulus (120, 300, 600 ms) were used. The results showed facilitation of the response with the informative cue and inhibition with the non informative cue. This happened for the longest cue-stimulus intervals and when the position of the cue and the position of the stimulus were congruent. Also order of cue presentation (i.e., either informative followed by the non informative cue or vice versa) proved important in producing facilitatory and inhibitory effects.  相似文献

Neuronal responses in somatosensory cortical areas 3b and 1-2 (S1) were recorded during an attention task involving cue directed selection of one of three simultaneous stimuli: dual sinewave shaped vibrotactile stimuli applied to mirror sites on both hands or a similarly timed auditory tone. The cued stimulus occurred with one of two equally probable patterns: a constant amplitude vibration or the latter with a superimposed brief sinewave amplitude pulse midway during stimulation. Uncued stimuli always contained amplitude pulses. Two monkeys signaled the absence or presence of an amplitude pulse by appropriately moving a foot pedal up or down. Cues initiated trials by marking the location where the monkey had to discriminate the stimulus pattern. Cue location and stimulus pattern varied randomly per trial. Approximately 50% of cells (44/77 in 3b and 39/77 in 1-2) had significantly different firing rates to stimulation cued to the contralateral hand relative to spatially cuing the ipsilateral hand or cross-modally the auditory stimulus. Relatively suppressed firing rates during times prior to the epoch containing amplitude pulses improved signal-to-noise ratios for responses to amplitude pulses. Instances of significant enhanced activity during and after intervals with amplitude pulses were rare and relative to suppressed activity when cues directed attention to the ipsilateral hand or auditory stimulus. The present findings suggest that attention influences even the earliest stage somatosensory cortical processing. Findings were more modest in S1 than those previously seen in S2 (Burton et al., Somatosens Mot Res 14: 237-267, 1997), which supports the concept of multistage attention processes for touch.  相似文献

We examined whether Java sparrows use imagery of auditory stimuli (imagery is a subject's mental representation of a stimulus by which the subject's behaviour may be governed under stimulus control even in the absence of the physical stimulus). Three types of ascending tone sequences were used. In the intact scale, sequence tones were played in ascending order. In the intact-masked scale, part of the sequence was masked by noise but the remaining scale was identical with the intact scale, whereas in the violated scale, the sequence could be heard as if tones were played slowly (Experiment 1) or quickly (Experiment 2). Subjects were divided into two groups: one group was trained to respond to the intact and intact-masked scales and to suppress response to the violation scale (imagery-positive group). The contingency was reversed for the other (violation-positive) group. In Experiment 1, all the birds acquired discrimination, but successful transfer to novel stimuli was observed only in the imagery-positive group, suggesting that the imagery of the tone sequence was used as a discriminative cue. Experiment 2 confirmed that the stimulus duration was a discriminative cue for both groups, suggesting that the birds also acquired discrimination using only specific cues.  相似文献

Gaze following is a socio-cognitive process that provides adaptive information about potential threats and opportunities in the individual’s environment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential interaction between emotional context and facial dominance in gaze following. We used the gaze cue task to induce attention to or away from the location of a target stimulus. In the experiment, the gaze cue either belonged to a (dominant looking) male face or a (non-dominant looking) female face. Critically, prior to the task, individuals were primed with pictures of threat or no threat to induce either a dangerous or safe environment. Findings revealed that the primed emotional context critically influenced the gaze cuing effect. While a gaze cue of the dominant male face influenced performance in both the threat and no-threat conditions, the gaze cue of the non-dominant female face only influenced performance in the no-threat condition. This research suggests an implicit, context-dependent follower bias, which carries implications for research on visual attention, social cognition, and leadership.  相似文献

Chemodetection of common nest predators may be advantageous for nesting birds; however, few studies have examined the ability of songbirds to detect chemical odors from predators. Thus, in 2002, we presented eastern bluebirds Sialia sialis with pairs of nest boxes; one box in the pair was regularly scented with chemical cues from a common nest predator, the black rat snake Elaphe obsoleta , and the other with a neutral cue. In 2004, we again presented bluebirds with pairs of boxes, one scented with chemical cues from a different nest predator, the deer mouse Peromyscus maniculatus , and the other with a neutral scent. Although human females were able to correctly distinguish paper laced with predator cues from paper with neutral cues, bluebirds were as likely to lay eggs in boxes with predator cues as in boxes with neutral cues. While it remains possible that bluebirds may detect scent from potential nest predators, it appears that the presence of these chemical cues does not ultimately influence selection of nest sites.  相似文献
