Abstract. This study describes the biomass and net primary productivity of the forests of Central Himalaya occurring in areas where vegetation ranges from close-canopy broad-leaved forest to stunted open-canopy timberline vegetation. The forests studied were Acer cappadocicum forest at 2750 m, Betula utilis forest at 3150 m, and Rhododendron campanulatum forest at 3300 m altitude in Central Himalaya. With the rise in altitude the forest biomass decreased from 308.3 ton/ha in Acer forest to 40.5 ton/ha in Rhododendron forest. The decrease in net primary productivity was less steep, from 19.6 ton/ha/yr in Acer forest to 10.0 ton/ha/yr in Rhododendron forest. The production efficiency of leaves (net production per unit leaf weight) in these forests is higher than in low altitude broad-leaved forests of Central Himalaya, i.e. from 2.89 in Acer forest to 3.41 g net production/g leaf biomass/yr, against 0.81-1.55 at lower altitudes. 相似文献

Biomass and production of two stands with Quercus variabilis Bl. as the dominant species (stands 1 and 3) and one with Q. mongolica Fisch. as the dominant species (stand 2) were investigated in southern Korea. Stands 1 and 3 naturally occurred on sites with southerly aspects while stand 2 naturally occurred on northerly aspects; stand ages were similar for the three stands (36–38 years old). Total above- and belowground biomass including understory vegetation (Mg ha–1) was 108.4 for stand 1, 115.6 for stand 2, and 132.0 for stand 3, respectively. Understory vegetation constituted 17.4% of the total biomass in stand 1 but only 3.7–4.5% in stand 2 and stand 3. Roots constituted 20.1–24.6% of the biomass of the overstory vegetation. Although stand 3 showed the highest total biomass, net production was highest in stand 2 at 12.6 (Mg ha–1 year–1); net production levels for stands 1 and 3 were 11.7 and 11.1 (Mg ha–1 year–1), respectively. It appeared that the differences in site conditions related to aspect influenced the distribution of naturally regenerated oak species within a relatively small area and resulted in differences in biomass and production among the stands. 相似文献

Japanese red maple, Acer pycnanthum, is an endangered wetland species having dioecious sex expression. Prior studies conclude that land development has caused
severe loss of habitat, and seedling regeneration is rare. However, information is lacking on sexual reproduction, which is
the first critical stage of regeneration. My research objective was to describe flowering and fruiting characteristics of
Japanese red maple, focusing on tree sizes at the onset of flowering, factors affecting flowering regularity and fruit abundance,
periodicity of fruit production, and sex ratio. In a study of a young population, Japanese red maple initiated flowering at
a small size under 100% light intensity. Initiation of flowering occurred at relatively lower height in males than females,
and males flowered more regularly than females. A survey of 1,106 clones from 46 natural populations revealed that male clones
were significantly more abundant than female clones. In a 4-year study of mature populations, nearly all clones flowered regularly,
and fruit abundance of dominant females was typically high. Fruit abundance at the population level also remained high, although
fruit abundance of individual female clones varied year by year. Therefore, sexual reproductive ability is highly vigorous.
Sex ratio exhibited a major deviation from a 1:1 ratio in populations with a small number of clones. In conservation planning,
we should prioritize avoidance of an unbalanced sex ratio by increasing population sizes. In addition, populations having
many clones >40 cm dbh with large, well-lighted crowns have a high potential of regular and abundant seed production. 相似文献

We have investigated the abilities of extracellular enzymes from dark-grown cell-suspension cultures of sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) to oxidize monolignols, the precursors for lignin biosynthesis in plants, as well as a variety of other lignin-related compounds. Laccase and peroxidase both exist as a multiplicity of isoenzymes in filtrates of spent culture medium, but their abilities to produce water-insoluble, dehydrogenation polymers (DHPs) from the monolignols (in the presence of hydrogen peroxide for the peroxidase reaction) appear identical whether or not the enzymes are purified from the concentrated filtrates or left in a crude mixture. The patterns of bonds formed in these DHPs are identical to those found in DHPs synthesized using horseradish peroxidase or fungal laccase, and many of these bonds are found in the natural lignins extracted from different plant sources. On the other hand, sycamore maple laccase is very much less active on phenolic substrates containing multiple aromatic rings than is sycamore maple peroxidase. We suggst that whereas laccase may function during the early stages of lignification to polymerize monolignols into oligo-lignols, cell-wall peroxidases may function when H2O2 is produced during the later stages of xylem cell development or in response to environmental stresses.Abbreviations DHP

This paper reports on the tree structure, tree dimension relationships and woody biomass production and removal of a sub-tropical natural forest in the Mamlay watershed of the Sikkim Himalaya. The forest provides fuel, fodder and timber to four villages. Only 11 tree species were found growing in the tree stratum despite the high diversity in the stand (32 tree species). The forest shows good regeneration potential with 5474 seedlings/ha and 1776 saplings/ha, but the population structure revealed a marked paucity of trees of higher diameter classes due to removal of trees of lower diameters. Standing wood biomass of 362 Mg/ha is mainly shared by 4 dominating species in the stand. The boles are removed mainly for timber and fuel purposes and about 22 Mg/ha wood biomass was removed in between 1987–1991. Net Primary productivity of woody biomass of the forest is recorded to be 18 Mg/ha/year. 3.85 Mg/ha of annual woody biomass production was removed in the form of tree boles apart from lopping of branches. 相似文献

Suspension-cultured cells of sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) secrete a number of acid hydrolases and other proteins that have both highmannose and complex asparagine-linked glycans.
We used affinity chromatography with concanavalin A and an antiserum specific for complex glycans in conjunction with in vivo-labeling
studies to show that all of the secreted proteins carry glycans. The presence of complex glycans on secretory proteins indicates
that they are passing through the Golgi complex on the way to the extracellular compartment. The sodium ionophore, monensin,
did not block the transport of proteins to the extracellular medium, even though monensin efficiently inhibited the Golgi-mediated
processing of complex glycans. The inhibition of N-glycosylation by tunicamycin reduced by 76% to 84% the accumulation of
newly synthesized (i.e. radioactively labeled) protein that was secreted by the sycamore cells, while cytoplasmic protein
biosynthesis was not affected by this antibiotic. However, in the presence of glycoprotein-processing inhibitors, such as
castanospermine and deoxymannojirimycin, the formation of complex glycans was prevented but glycoprotein secretion was unchanged.
These results support the conclusion that N-linked glycan processing is not necessary for sorting, but glycosylation is required
for accumulation of secreted proteins in the extracellular compartment. 相似文献

Aboveground biomass and litterfall ofPinus pumila scrubs, growing on the Kiso mountain range in central Japan, were investigated from 1984 to 1985. The biomass of two research
plots (P1 and P2) with different scrub heights was estimated by two methods, the stratified clip technique and the allometric
method. Aboveground total biomass estimated by the latter method reached 181 ton d.w. ha−1 in P1 and 132 ton d.w. ha−1 in P2. Creeping stems contributed to about half of the total biomass. Although estimates of woody organs differed between
the two plots, leaf biomass estimates were almost the same at 15.5 ton d.w. ha−1. The canopies of the twoP. pumila scrubs were characterized by a large mean leaf area density of 5.0 m2 m−3. Despite this large area density, relatively moderate attenuation of light intensity was observed. Specific leaf area generally
increased with reduced leaf height. Annual total litterfall was estimated to be 3.60 ton d.w. ha−1 yr−1 in P1 and 2.39 ton d.w. ha−1 yr−1 in P2. Annual leaf fall in both plots was approximately 2.0 ton d.w. ha−1 yr−1. Leaves fell mainly in early autumn. Annual loss rates of branches, estimated as the sum of annual branch litterfall and

Summary Thalli of Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm., a nitrogen-fixing epiphyte common in mesic temperate forests, were collected in a Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) forest near Corvallis, Oregon, and maintained for 20 to 40 days in controlled-environment chambers with atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 374 and 700 ll-1. Nitrogenase activity, which was assayed by the acetylene reduction method, was approximately doubled in the lichen maintained in elevated CO2. Increases in nitrogen fixation by lichens may be an important part of the integrated ecosystem response to rising CO2. 相似文献

We review 72 published articles to elucidate characteristics of biomass allocation and productivity of mangrove forests and also introduce recent progress on the study of mangrove allometry to solve the site- and species-specific problems. This includes the testing of a common allometric equation, which may be applicable to mangroves worldwide. The biomass of mangrove forests varies with age, dominant species, and locality. In primary mangrove forests, the above-ground biomass tends to be relatively low near the sea and increases inland. On a global scale, mangrove forests in the tropics have much higher above-ground biomass than those in temperate areas. Mangroves often accumulate large amounts of biomass in their roots, and the above-ground biomass to below-ground biomass ratio of mangrove forests is significantly low compared to that of upland forests (ANCOVA, P < 0.01). Several studies have reported on the growth increment of biomass and litter production in mangrove forests. We introduce some recent studies using the so-called “summation method” and investigate the trends in net primary production (NPP). For crown heights below 10 m, the above-ground NPP of mangrove forests is significantly higher (ANOVA, P < 0.01) than in those of tropical upland forests. The above-ground litter production is generally high in mangrove forests. Moreover, in many mangrove forests, the rate of soil respiration is low, possibly because of anaerobic soil conditions. These trends in biomass allocation, NPP, and soil respiration will result in high net ecosystem production, making mangrove forests highly efficient carbon sinks in the tropics. 相似文献

One of the largest contiguous seagrass ecosystems in the world is located on the shallow continental shelf adjacent to the west coast of Florida, USA and is comprised of seasonally ephemeral Halophila decipiens meadows. Little is known about the demography of the west Florida shelf H. decipiens, which may produce 4.56 × 108 g C day−1 or more during the peak growing season. We documented seagrass distribution, biomass, and productivity, and density of sediment seed reserves, seedlings, flowers and fruits on the southeastern portion of the west Florida shelf by sampling along a transect at three stations in 10, 15, and 20 m water depth. Biomass, flower, fruit, seedling, and seed bank densities tended to be highest at stations in 10–15 m water depth and lowest at 20 m. Flowers and fruit were most prevalent during summer cruises (June and August 1999, July 2000). Seedling germination occurred during summer, fall (October 1999), and winter (January 2000) sampling events, with the highest seedling densities present during the winter. Seed bank density remained consistent through time. A Category I hurricane with sustained winds of 120 km h−1 passed over the stations, but only limited impact on H. decipiens biomass was observed. The presence of a persistent seed bank provides for recovery after storm disturbance, annual reestablishment of populations, and continual maintenance of the 20,000 km2 of deep water seagrass habitat present on the west Florida shelf. 相似文献

Tropical rain forest dominated by Peltogyne gracilipes (Fabaceae) occurs on Maracá Island, Roraima, Brazil, on a range of soil types. Three forest types were stratified for sampling, according to the occurrence of Peltogyne trees: (1) Peltogyne-rich forest (PRF), (2) Peltogyne-poor forest (PPF), and (3) forest without Peltogyne (FWP). Biomass increment and change in total stand biomass were calculated from mortality, recruitment, and growth data for trees in the three forest types. Data were derived from permanent plots established in 1991, where all trees (≥10 cm diameter at breast height), including palms and vines (lianas), were tagged and measured in three plots, each of 0.25 ha, in each of the three forest types. Field surveys were carried out in October 1991 and March 2003. Over a period of 11 years, the above-ground biomass in all forest types declined slightly (<5%), associated with the death of large trees, especially in the monodominant forests (PRF and PPF). Within the study period, the forest on Maracá experienced two heavy droughts, related to El Niño events (1997–1998 and 2002–2003) and most mortality and loss of biomass probably occurred during these events. Therefore, as the Maracá forests appear not be increasing in above-ground biomass overall, they may not be acting as a sink for atmospheric CO2. The trees of the five most abundant species (Ecclinusa, Lecythis, Licania, Peltogyne, and Pradosia) accounted for about 55% of the total biomass in both FWP and PPF and for 74% in PRF. Peltogyne gracilipes had a stable, regenerating population in PRF, and is clearly a persistent dominant in a monodominant forest. 相似文献

A maple tree genus,Acer is the largest genus in broad-leaved deciduous trees and contains about 200 species. A delimitation of the genus is clear
but the intrageneric classification was controversial because of homoplasies in morphological characters. In this study, a
phylogenetic relationship inAcer was inferred based on chloroplast DNA restriction site polymorphisms with 17 restriction endonucleases and previously proposed
intrageneric classifications were evaluated. The phylogenetic tree showed that (1) sectionsArguta, Cissifolia, Lithocarpa, Macrantha, Palmata, Spicata, Tataricum, Trifoliata sensu Ogata (1967: Bull. Tokyo Univ. Forests 63: 89–206) were monophyletic groups respectively, (2) sectionsCampestria, Goniocarpa, Platanoidea sensu Ogata (1967) were polyphyletic respectively, and (3) sectionsDistyla andParviflora formed a sister group. An average of estimated nucleotide substitution rates of Acer chloroplast DNA was calculated as 7.9×10−11±1.4×10−11 nucleotide substitutions par site par year, which coincides well with previously reported rates of perennial plants. Effects of N sources (ammonium, nitrate and ammonitrate) and VA mycorrhizae (Glomus intraradices) on rhizosphere soil characteristics (pH, exchangeable acidity, exchangeable cations, inorganic N concentrations) growth and nutrient acquisition of coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L. cv guatemala) were investigated in a pot study with an acid soil (Red Bluff Loam) sterilized by autoclaving. Ammonium addition decreased rhizosphere pH while nitrate and ammonitrate additions both increased rhizosphere pH. Mycorrhizae induced a higher pH, a lower exchangeable acidity and higher values of exchangeable cations in the rhizosphere. Ammonium addition resulted in a lower mycorrhizal infection than the two other N sources. Mycorrhizal plants grew better and accumulated more N, Ca and Mg than non-mycorrhizal plants. 相似文献

翅果的风媒传播是槭属植物的主要扩散方式之一,且与种子萌发有着密切关联,但具体机理一直还并不明确。以分布于长白山的9种槭树为对象,探讨翅果的形态特征,测定它们在空气中的垂直沉降速度、不同风速下的水平扩散距离以及在扩散距离上的种子萌发率,进而比较并分析翅果的形态性状与沉降速度、水平扩散距离的相关性以及萌发率在不同扩散距离上的差异性。结果表明:(1) 9种槭树的翅果长、宽和面积与沉降速度、水平扩散距离均呈负相关;尽管如此,翅果形态并不是风传播物种的最佳分类指标,而翅载力能较好地反应物种的风传播能力;(2)翅果垂直沉降速度和水平扩散距离间存在显著负相关,表明沉降速度越小,翅果在空气中停留的时间越长,水平方向上扩散距离越远,且强风有助于提高翅果的扩散能力;(3)沉降速度最慢的花楷槭在不同风速下的水平扩散距离均最远,而沉降速度最快的拧筋槭水平扩散距离最短;(4)种子萌发率随扩散距离的增加呈下降趋势。上述结果不仅为深入理解翅果的风力传播机制以及种子萌发对水平扩散距离的响应机制提供科学依据,还可为种群实生更新方面的理论研究提供参考。 相似文献

Large ungulate population monitoring is a crucial wildlife management tool as ungulates help in structuring and maintaining the large carnivore populations. Reliable data on population status of major ungulate prey species are still non-existent for most of the protected areas in the Indian part of the eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot. Twenty transects were monitored over a period of three years (2009–2011) totaling 600 km with an average length of 2 km. The estimated mean density of ungulates was 17.5 km−2 with overall density of 48.7 km−2. The wild pig Sus scrofa had the highest density (6.7 ± 1.2 km−2) among all the prey species followed by barking deer Muntiacus muntjak (3.9 ± 0.6 km−2), sambar Rusa unicolor (3.8 ± 0.5) and gaur Bos gaurus (3.5 ± 0.9 km−2). The estimated total ungulate biomass density was 2182.56 kg km−2. This prey biomass can support up to 7.2 tigers per 100 km−2. However, with two other sympatric carnivores sharing the same resources, the actual tiger numbers that can be supported will be lower. The estimated minor prey species was 31 km−2 significantly 30.6% crop damages were reported by wild pig (p = 0.01) and 35.4% was elephant (p = 0.004). This data on ungulate densities and biomass will be crucial for carnivore conservation in this understudied globally significant biodiversity hotspot. 相似文献

Burning increased the mean annual canopy and belowground biomass of a dry tropical savanna by 40% and 12%, respectively, while littermass was reduced by 85% in comparison to control savanna. Mean annual aboveground and belowground net primary production were 471 and 631 g m-2 in control, and 584 and 688 g m-2 in burned savanna, respectively. Fire caused an increase in mean aboveground net production of 24% and in belowground net production of 9%.Concentration of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in vegetation of unburned plots ranged between 34.01–38.59%, 0.85–1.53% and 0.04–0.11% and in soil from 0.95–1%, 0.011–0.13% and 0.017–0.02%, respectively. Fire increased the mean concentrations of N and P by 16% and 42% in vegetation and 18.18% and 17.65% in soil, respectively. Thus winter fire can be an important tool for the management of dry tropical savanna with respect to biomass production and nutritive quality. 相似文献
