Larval release, hatching rhythms and moult patterns were examined in a captive population of the subantarctic lithodid, Paralomis spinosissima from the South Georgia and Shag Rocks region. Larvae hatched throughout the year with the majority of females starting to release larvae at the end of the austral summer and beginning of autumn. Larval release continued over a period of up to 9 weeks with high variability in the numbers that hatched each day. A similar seasonal pattern to hatching was evident in the moulting of females. Intermoult period for two adult females (CL = 63 and 85 mm) ranged from 894 to 1,120 days while an intermoult period for males was estimated to be in excess of 832 days. The results are consistent with other species of Paralomis and are discussed in relation to physiological and environmental adaptations to the cold-water conditions south of the Antarctic Convergence. 相似文献

The effect of disturbance by two macroinvertebrates, the sand dollar Mellita quinquiesperforata (Leske) and the sea pansy Renilla reniformis (Cuvier) on meiofauna was studied on a sandbar in North Inlet, Georgetown, South Carolina. Abundances of nematodes and the harpacticoid copepod Apodopsyllusunguiformis Coull &; Hogue decreased significantly in the presence of sand dollars; other taxa were not affected. In two Renilla experiments, one natural and another where artificial and real Renilla were implanted, we could determine no consistent effect on any meiobenthic taxon. However, sediments disturbed by implanting living and artificial Renilla returned to ambient levels within 1 h. 相似文献

A new hermit crab species, Paguristes scarabinoi sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on specimens collected in Uruguay. The new species is assigned to the Paguristes tortugae species complex based on the characteristic dense fringe of long plumose setae present on ambulatory legs and dorsolateral margins of chelae. The new species can be differentiated from all other species currently placed in the P. tortugae complex by the combination of the following features: antennal flagellum with short and long setae on each article; antennular peduncles short to moderately long, not exceeding one-third of ocular peduncles including the corneas; dactyl of ambulatory legs long, slender, slightly convex and without a longitudinal sulcus flanked by corneous spines or spinules on the mesial face; and female brood pouch elongate, slender, blade-shaped. A key to the western Atlantic species of the P. tortugae complex is provided.

The male gonopores, male reproductive apparatus, spermatophore and spermatozoa of the Mediterranean hermit crab Paguristes eremita are described, using interference phase microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A correlation is made between the gonopore morphology and the different kinds of setae accompanying them, and the reproductive biology of these crabs. Each testes merges into a tubular duct made up of four zones: (1) the collecting tubule with free spermatozoa; (2) the proximal zone, where the ampulla of the spermatophores starts to be formed; (3) the medial zone, where the ampulla is completed, the stalk lengthens and the pedestal is formed; (4) the distal zone, where the mature spermatophores are stored. The sizes of the different parts of the spermatophore and of the sperm are given and their exterior morphology and ultrastructure described and compared to congeners. The morphology of the gonopore, male reproductive system, spermatophore and spermatozoa of P. eremita are species-specific, clearly distinguishing the species from the other members of the family. The spermatophore morphology of the hermit crab Isocheles sawayai from southwestern Atlantic (Brazil) is described. The spermatophores show similarities with those described for other members of the family Diogenidae, especially with the recently described Loxopagurus loxochelis. The spermatophore is composed of three major regions: a sperm filled head or ampulla, a columnar stalk and a foot or pedestal. The spermatophores show specific morphology in having a circular ampulla, and a constriction or neck between the ampulla (100 μm) and the thin (27 μm), long stalk (500 μm). The stalk penetrates less than half way into the spermatophore head. Most spermatophores show one of the small posterior projections on the underside of the ampulla as being bigger than the other, making it asymmetrical. The size of the spermatophore is related to hermit crab size with direct relationships found between spermatophore ampulla width, total length, and peduncle length with shield length of the hermit crab. The morphological characteristics of the spermatophore of I. sawayai are species-specific distinguishing it from other members of the family, and are useful to infer further phylogenetic relationships. 相似文献

The planktonic glaucothoe of the Indo-West Pacific hermit crab Paguropsis typica Henderson has an aberrant anthozoan polyp, identified as a nynanthean actinian, attached to the underside of its thorax. The morphology of the anemone is described. The scapus is dumb-bell shaped and exhibits a slit-like mouth opening oriented transverse to the animal's siphonoglyphal plane. The gonads are very well developed, whereas tentacle-like structures or retractor muscles of certain septa are reduced. In the adult stage, Paguropsis typica is associated with the zoanthidean Epizoanthus paguropsides . It is assumed that the actinian is lost at the ecdysis leading to the first hermit stage and that P. typica might possibly seize a free Epizoanthus colony and adapt it to its body. 相似文献

A detailed survey of the carcinological cryptofauna in Tikehau atoll in the Tuamotus, was made: (1) to determine whether Tikehau atoll has a diverse fauna; (2) to compare it with a high island Polynesian reef; (3) to identify the distribution pattern of crabs in relation to depth and to different structures of the atoll; and (4) to compare these results with those obtained in Madagascar, La Réunion and Mauritius. Sixty five species were collected at 13 sites. Cluster analysis based on Sanders' index of affinity revealed one main group of species occurring on outer slopes and another occurring on all reef-flat and lagoonal sites. The crustacean cryptofauna occurring in the atoll appears to be impoverished in comparison to that found on Polynesian high island reefs and on Malagasian reefs. However, all outer reef slope sites at the 3 localities studied share some species in common. 相似文献

占据适宜的贝壳对于寄居蟹的发育、繁殖和存活至关重要。尽管很多研究探讨了蟹类对贝壳的选择,但寄居蟹选择多大的贝壳仍不清楚。在实验条件下,本文作者用巴西Anchieta岛上野生红眼寄居蟹( Pagurusbrevidactylus)最常利用的黑衣蟹守螺( Cerithium atratum)和节桑椹螺( Morula nodulosa)进行了贝壳选择实验,通过回归分析确定目标贝类及其大小。观察到寄居蟹对一种独特贝类的选择具有性别意义,从而验证了野外观察结果。雄性明显地倾向选择黑衣蟹守螺的贝壳,而产卵和非产卵的雌性个体对腹足类贝壳的选择差异不显著。尽管两性之间对适宜贝壳的选择存在差异,贝壳适宜度指数(SAI)表明,种群占据那些足够大的贝壳(SAI =1·20±0·23)。红眼寄居蟹对贝壳利用的这种模式可能是为了避免与体型相似同域物种的竞争,从而在后来的生长中减少频繁地更换贝壳。根据目前的数据可以得到以下结论:红眼寄居蟹对贝壳的选择不仅取决于贝壳的参数,而且还与寄居蟹的个体和性选择有关[动物学报51 (5) : 813 -820 , 2005]。 相似文献

The hermit crab Calcinus tibicen has an extensive distribution along the coasts of the western Atlantic Ocean, from the USA to southern Brazil. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis of the presence of phylogeographic structure of C. tibicen throughout its distribution, evaluating the genetic and morphological variabilities of the species. The molecular data, genetic diversity and demographic history were inferred from 16 different localities for the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) (75 specimens) and 16S rRNA (20). The morphological information was based on 99 individuals from the same 16 localities. Results were obtained by the construction of haplotype networks and a phylogenetic tree, an Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA), Tajima’s D and Fu’s Fs tests, pairwise mismatch distributions under the sudden expansion model, and by estimating divergence times. The haplotype networks show the existence of two genetically well-defined groups that do not share haplotypes. The phylogenetic tree and the matrix of genetic distances suggest lack of gene between North and South Atlantic groups, also corroborated by AMOVA for the COI gene. The genetic distance can be attributed to at least two ecological factors: the existence of a physiological barrier caused by the Amazon River freshwater plume, and the effect of the bifurcation of the westerly flowing South Atlantic oceanic currents creating a gap along the Brazilian coastline. Demographic history analyses suggest that C. tibicen experienced population expansion, probably after the Amazon River changed its direction. Despite the molecular evidence for the existence of a phylogeographic structure, no morphological pattern for each genetic group was observed. Therefore, based on the described molecular differences and the ecological and historical factors suggested, the question arises whether a cryptic species should be recognized for some of the populations of C. tibicen. 相似文献

The larva of the hermit crab Diogenes nitidimanus Terao, 1913 was found in the ballast waters of the tanker Minotaur that arrived from the Chinese port of Laizhou (Bohai Bay, Yellow Sea). Earlier, an abundant population of mature adults of D. nitidimanus was found in Vostok Bay (Peter the Great Bay), this suggested the introduction and naturalization of this species in the Peter the Great Bay. The finding of its larva in ballast waters of a ship on the Russia-China route confirms the introduction of this species into Peter the Great Bay. 相似文献

Some aspects of the reproductive biology of two hermit crabs Pagurus alatus (Fabricius, 1775) and P. excavatus (Herbst, 1791) were studied. Specimens were collected monthly from April 2000 to March 2001 on the continental shelf and
the upper-middle slope off the Southwestern coasts of Sardinia, in the central-western Mediterranean Sea. Crab size (minimum
and maximum shield length) was 1.7 and 9.5 mm for 1150 females of P. alatus; 4.0 and 10.4 mm for 347 females of P. excavatus, respectively. Females of P. alatus with ripe ovaries were only found in February-April and ovigerous females were observed throughout the year except in March,
with the highest incidence in summer. Females of P. excavatus with fully developed ovaries were collected during all months of the year reaching a peak from April to June. Ovigerous females
of P. excavatus occurred throughout the year and the main spawning period occurred in March and April. Fecundity of both species was calculated
to assess seasonal variation of reproductive intensity and was positively correlated with the size of the individuals. Monthly
fecundity did not reveal significant differences in P. alatus ovigerous females, whereas P. excavatus exhibited significant differences in monthly fecundity depending on the time of year. Difference in fecundity among P. alatus and P. excavatus can be related to the size of the ovigerous females and species of hermit crab, but their different reproductive strategies

The phylogeny of the superfamily Chirostyloidea (Decapoda: Anomura) has been poorly understood owing to limited taxon sampling and discordance between different genes. We present a nine-gene dataset across 15 chirostyloids, including all known yeti crabs (Kiwaidae), to improve the resolution of phylogenetic affinities within and between the different families, and to date key divergences using fossil calibrations. This study supports the monophyly of Chirostyloidea and, within this, a basal split between Eumunididae and a Kiwaidae–Chirostylidae clade. All three families originated in the Mid-Cretaceous, but extant kiwaids and most chirostylids radiated from the Eocene onwards. Within Kiwaidae, the basal split between the seep-endemic Kiwa puravida and a vent clade comprising Kiwa hirsuta and Kiwa spp. found on the East Scotia and Southwest Indian ridges is compatible with a hypothesized seep-to-vent evolutionary trajectory. A divergence date estimate of 13.4–25.9 Ma between the Pacific and non-Pacific lineages is consistent with Kiwaidae spreading into the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean via the newly opened Drake Passage. The recent radiation of Kiwaidae adds to the list of chemosynthetic fauna that appear to have diversified after the Palaeocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum, a period of possibly widespread anoxia/dysoxia in deep-sea basins. 相似文献

Studies on relative growth and sexual maturity are important to understand the reproductive biology of a species. The aims of this study were to determine the relative growth and to estimate the size of Panopeus occidentalis at morphological sexual maturity, as well as to confirm whether this species demonstrates heterochely or handedness. Individuals were collected every two months from March 2013 to July 2014 in the intertidal estuarine zone of Cananeia, São Paulo, Brazil. The following measurements were taken: carapace width (CW), carapace length (CL), right and left cheliped propodus length (CPL), right and left cheliped propodus height (CPH), right and left cheliped propodus width (CPW), abdomen width (AW), and first pleopod length (FPL). The morphometric relationship used to estimate the size at morphological sexual maturity were CW vs. AW for females and CW vs. FPL for males; these comparisons yielded estimated CW values of 15.60 mm and 16.67 mm, respectively. Heterochely was observed but handedness was not present. The species has a major cheliped on one side, but the side is not constant. This study provides the first insights on the relative growth, sexual maturity, heterochely, and handedness on a population of P. occidentalis in a conserved area. 相似文献

Birgus latro (L.) is the largest terrestrial hermit crab in the world. The species is widely distributed on remote Indo-Pacific islands of the tropics, but it is rapidly declining and is currently classified as data deficient on the IUCN red list. This review provides a synopsis of both published and unpublished data on the biology and ecology of B. latro. It highlights the lack of robust biological information on the species’ basic biology, particularly in the juvenile and reproductive phases, while behavioural ecology studies are few and report conflicting data between populations. Population studies indicate that B. latro may have limited recruitment events throughout its range, emphasising the need for more systematic research to clearly identify factors that influence successful recruitment events. The review highlights the paucity of substantiated peer reviewed studies on this species and emphasises the need for further systematic research. 相似文献
