A very long neck that is apparently suitable for feeding at great heights is a characteristic feature of most sauropod dinosaurs. Yet, it remains controversial whether any sauropods actually raised their necks high. Recently, strong physiological arguments have been put forward against the idea of high-browsing sauropods, because of the very high blood pressure that appears to be inevitable when the head is located several metres above the heart. For the sauropod Euhelopus zdanskyi, however, biomechanical evidence clearly indicates high browsing. Energy expenditure owing to high browsing is compared with energy costs for walking a distance. It is demonstrated for Euhelopus as well as for the much larger Brachiosaurus that despite an increase in the metabolic rate, high browsing was worthwhile for a sauropod if resources were far apart.  相似文献

The long necks of gigantic sauropod dinosaurs are commonly assumed to have been used for high browsing to obtain enough food. However, this analysis questions whether such a posture was reasonable from the standpoint of energetics. The energy cost of circulating the blood can be estimated accurately from two physiological axioms that relate metabolic rate, blood flow rate and arterial blood pressure: (i) metabolic rate is proportional to blood flow rate and (ii) cardiac work rate is proportional to the product of blood flow rate and blood pressure. The analysis shows that it would have required the animal to expend approximately half of its energy intake just to circulate the blood, primarily because a vertical neck would have required a high systemic arterial blood pressure. It is therefore energetically more feasible to have used a more or less horizontal neck to enable wide browsing while keeping blood pressure low.  相似文献

Hypothesized upright neck postures in sauropod dinosaurs require systemic arterial blood pressures reaching 700 mmHg at the heart. Recent data on ventricular wall stress indicate that their left ventricles would have weighed 15 times those of similarly sized whales. Such dimensionally, energetically and mechanically disadvantageous ventricles were highly unlikely in an endothermic sauropod. Accessory hearts or a siphon mechanism, with sub-atmospheric blood pressures in the head, were also not feasible. If the blood flow requirements of sauropods were typical of ectotherms, the left-ventricular blood volume and mass would have been smaller; nevertheless, the heart would have suffered the serious mechanical disadvantage of thick walls. It is doubtful that any large sauropod could have raised its neck vertically and endured high arterial blood pressure, and it certainly could not if it had high metabolic rates characteristic of endotherms.  相似文献

Castanera, D., Pascual, C., Canudo, J.I., Hernández, N. & Barco, J., 2012: Ethological variations in gauge in sauropod trackways from the Berriasian of Spain. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 476–489. Two sauropod trackways from the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) of the Cameros Basin (Spain) show important variations in trackway gauge, along the same trackway. These variations seem to be associated with different behaviours; on the one hand with a significant variation in the direction of travel (turning phenomena) and on the other hand with a decrease in speed, probably associated with the properties of the substrate. These variations in sauropod trackways provide the trackway gauge debate with new data, supporting the hypothesis that the walking style and substrate properties may in some cases determine this sauropod character. The study of turning sauropod trackways improves our knowledge of sauropod locomotion. □Ethology, intermediate‐gauge, sauropod trackways, substrate properties, wide‐gauge.  相似文献

Long‐lived trees experience different levels of damage due to mammalian herbivores. To untangle the mechanisms that underlie this variation, we combined chemical with dendrochronological analyses to study variation in browsing on Western redcedars (Thuja plicata) on Haida Gwaii (British Columbia, Canada). Since the last glaciation, Haida Gwaii forests had lacked large herbivore browser until Sitka black‐tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) were introduced at the beginning of the 20th century. Dendrochronology yielded information on radial growth and plant annual responses to environmental stresses including herbivory. Secondary metabolite content and plant nutritional quality provided insights into proximate causes of food choices made by herbivores. We sampled lightly‐ and heavily‐browsed young trees at four sites: three clear‐cut sites with high browsing pressure and one old‐growth forest site where browsing pressure had, until recently, been lower. Heavily‐browsed young trees had lower concentrations of secondary metabolites and were of lower nutritive value than lightly‐browsed trees at all sites. Under high browsing pressure, tree growth patterns suggested that all young trees were initially severely browsed until some trees, currently scored as lightly‐browsed, started to escape deer. At the old‐growth site, both lightly‐ and heavily‐browsed trees tended to have lower overall average secondary metabolite concentrations than those of all other sites, a trend possibly related to greater canopy closure. Lightly‐browsed trees were older than heavily‐browsed ones which resulted, during the period of lower browsing pressure, in higher growth rate and a same pattern of change in growth from one year to the next year. This suggests that, under low browsing pressure, selection of young trees related to chemical defense was weak and that growth differences due to other factors than browsing could be expressed. Under strong browsing pressure, however, all young trees had equally low growth rates until trees with better genetic potential to produce effective defenses were able to escape deer. This suggests that selection by deer could occur on a long‐lived tree.  相似文献

Background

As gigantic herbivores, sauropod dinosaurs were among the most important members of Mesozoic communities. Understanding their ecology is fundamental to developing a complete picture of Jurassic and Cretaceous food webs. One group of sauropods in particular, Diplodocoidea, has long been a source of debate with regard to what and how they ate. Because of their long lineage duration (Late Jurassic-Late Cretaceous) and cosmopolitan distribution, diplodocoids formed important parts of multiple ecosystems. Additionally, fortuitous preservation of a large proportion of cranial elements makes them an ideal clade in which to examine feeding behavior.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Hypotheses of various browsing behaviors (selective and nonselective browsing at ground-height, mid-height, or in the upper canopy) were examined using snout shape (square vs. round) and dental microwear. The square snouts, large proportion of pits, and fine subparallel scratches in Apatosaurus, Diplodocus, Nigersaurus, and Rebbachisaurus suggest ground-height nonselective browsing; the narrow snouts of Dicraeosaurus, Suuwassea, and Tornieria and the coarse scratches and gouges on the teeth of Dicraeosaurus suggest mid-height selective browsing in those taxa. Comparison with outgroups (Camarasaurus and Brachiosaurus) reinforces the inferences of ground- and mid-height browsing and the existence of both non-selective and selective browsing behaviors in diplodocoids.

Conclusions/Significance

These results reaffirm previous work suggesting the presence of diverse feeding strategies in sauropods and provide solid evidence for two different feeding behaviors in Diplodocoidea. These feeding behaviors can subsequently be tied to paleoecology, such that non-selective, ground-height behaviors are restricted to open, savanna-type environments. Selective browsing behaviors are known from multiple sauropod clades and were practiced in multiple environments.  相似文献

The critically endangered box‐gum grassy woodlands of south‐east Australia face numerous threats including the failure of woody plant regeneration caused by over‐browsing. In the Australian Capital Territory, over‐browsing of tree and shrub saplings is likely caused by dense populations of Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) found in many nature reserves free of livestock. One possible way to protect these saplings is using coarse woody debris (CWD) as a browsing deterrent. We tested this idea by planting palatable Red Stemmed Wattle (Acacia rubida) saplings among manually applied CWD, among naturally fallen CWD, and in the open, in five woodland reserves. We recorded the proportion of saplings browsed, the number of weeks to first browsing and the browsing severity (sapling height lost). Applied CWD protected saplings from being browsed only at relatively low‐to‐moderate kangaroo browsing pressure (as measured by faecal pellet counts). At relatively high browsing pressure, the probability of a sapling being browsed among applied CWD was 100%, similar to the probability in the open treatment (no CWD). Natural CWD, in contrast, provided some protection even at high browsing pressures. Time to browsing was most affected by browsing pressure, although CWD cover also had an influence. Browsing severity was similar between the three treatments and was only affected by browsing pressure. These results indicate that without protection, palatable woody plant saplings have a high chance of being browsed by kangaroos in woodland reserves, and therefore, some protection is needed for successful regeneration. The CWD being applied to reserves has a limited capacity to protect regenerating saplings. If more protection is wanted a CWD structure more resembling natural fallen timber should be used. This could be done by artificially placing branches around plantings. However, the most important action to facilitate regeneration is to manage kangaroo populations to reduce overall browsing pressure.  相似文献

Plant‐mediated indirect effects can be important ecological drivers in plant communities, especially in systems where extended genetic effects of foundation species can shape communities and influence ecosystem dynamics. Here we investigate the direct and indirect effects of uncontrolled browsing by marsupial herbivores including the common brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula, Bennetts wallaby Macropus rufogriseus and the red‐bellied pademelon Thylogale billardierii, in a Eucalyptus system known to have extended community and ecosystem genetic effects. In a common garden trial containing 525 full‐sib families from an incomplete diallel crossing program located in northeastern Tasmania, Australia, we assessed the genetic basis to herbivore preferences, the impact of a single and repeated marsupial browsing event on tree fitness and morphological traits and the associated indirect plant‐mediated effects on a subsequent herbivore, autumn gum moth Mnesampela privata. Marsupial browsing was not influenced by plant genetics, but spatial components instead affected the pattern of damage across the trial. Marsupial browsing had significant impacts on tree development, morphology and survival, resulting in reductions in survival, height and basal area, an increase proportion in multiple stems, delays in flowering as well as delays in phase change from juvenile to adult foliage. Fitness impacts were minimal in response to a once‐off browsing event, but effects were exacerbated when trees suffered repeated browsing. We demonstrate clear plant‐mediated indirect effects of marsupial browsing on subsequent tree use by an invertebrate herbivore, through induced changes in plant morphology. Such indirect effects have the potential to influence biotic community structure on a foundation species host‐plant, and the evolutionary interactions that occur between organisms and the host‐plant themselves.  相似文献

  • 1 Daphnia may reach high population densities seasonally, or in patches, in lakes. To test the effects of chemicals released by high daphniid densities on their life‐history traits, nine species of Daphnia, D. magna, D. pulicaria, D. pulex, D. hyalina, D. galeata, D. laevis, D. lumholtzi, D. ambigua and D. cucullata, were grown in water from crowded Daphnia cultures in a flow‐through system in the presence of abundant food.
  • 2 Water from Daphnia at 85 L‐1 depressed growth rate, and lowered body size and clutch at first reproduction of six species of small‐bodied Daphnia (adult body length < 1.8 mm), but had no significant effects on larger species. Two clones of D. pulex differed in their growth rate in response to crowding, indicating that response patterns may vary within species.
  • 3 Chemicals released by crowded D. magna reduced tail spine length in D. lumholtzi and D. cucullata by 37% and 11%, respectively, and induced changes in carapace morphology in D. lumholtzi and D. ambigua.
  • 4 Chemicals released by crowded conspecifics may provide an additional, density‐dependent mechanism of population regulation; when large species of Daphnia coexist at a high population density with small species, these chemicals may reinforce the competitive advantage of large species.

Impacts of large herbivores (>5 kg) on woody plants in African savannas are potentially most severe among plants shorter than 1.6 m. It is well established that severe browsing leads to longer shoots, yet prevents saplings from recruiting into adult size‐classes in African savannas. Increased shoot length, indicating faster shoot growth, is often associated with reduced concentrations of tannins and increased nutrient concentrations, suggesting carbon limitation. We hypothesized that, on average, large herbivores suppress stem height or circumference, but increase shoot length. We also hypothesized that if there were concomitant positive effects on nutrients, or negative effects on tannin concentrations, they would be greatest early in the wet season. We sampled saplings of four deciduous woody species (Acacia grandicornuta, Dichrostachys cinerea, Combretum apiculatum and Grewia flavescens) at different stages of the wet season in a large‐scale, long‐term herbivore exclusion experiment in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Plant height, shoot length and stem circumference were generally not adversely affected by large herbivores, suggesting C limitation is rarely present among deciduous saplings in semi‐arid African savannas, allowing them to tolerate browsing. Time since first rainfall emerged as a predominant factor consistently affecting nutrient and tannin concentrations, rather than large herbivores. Nitrogen and phosphorus generally decreased (by 20–50%), while condensed tannin concentration increased (150–350%) during the wet season, except for one species. We postulate that A. grandicornuta is less prone than other species to accumulating tannins during the wet season because of high investment of C in spines. Although nutrient and tannin concentrations were generally not affected by large herbivores, species‐specific responses were evident very early in the wet season, which is when herbivore populations are most likely to be affected by differential forage quality among plants.  相似文献

Xing, L, Bell, P.R., Currie, P.J., Shibata, M., Tseng, K. & Dong, Z. 2012: A sauropod rib with an embedded theropod tooth: direct evidence for feeding behaviour in the Jehol group, China. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 500–506. A fragmentary rib from the Lower Cretaceous (Barremian) Yixian Formation in northeastern China preserves rare, direct evidence of feeding behaviour by an unidentified theropod. The rib, which comes from the holotype of Dongbetitan, preserves an embedded, broken theropod tooth. Comparison of the tooth with all known theropods from the Yixian Formation suggests that it belongs to a new taxon of medium‐sized theropod. Given the large size difference between the sauropod and the theropod and the absence of reactive bone growth around the tooth, the bite likely occurred post‐mortem during scavenging. Recognition of a new, medium‐sized theropod increases the known diversity of taxa from the Yixian Formation and helps fill a gap in the theropod palaeoecology of that formation, which previously consisted of only small (<2 m) forms. □China, Cretaceous, feeding behaviour, theropod, titanosauriformes, sauropod.  相似文献

Herbivores can dramatically diminish revegetation success, but associational refuge theory predicts that neighbouring plants could hinder browsing of planted seedlings. The key to strategic restoration using associational refuge is to define which patch variables are effective against the appropriate herbivores, at multiple scales, and to understand which stages of the foraging process these variables disrupt. Our study aimed to test the capacity of existing vegetation to act as associational refuge for planted seedlings by affecting search, detection and consumption decisions, and more generally influence herbivore foraging patterns. We conducted a field trial with free‐ranging, mammalian herbivores and nursery‐raised, native tree seedlings. We quantified seedling browsing damage over time in relation to a suite of existing patch variables at two spatial scales (100 m2 and 4 m2). After two months, 78% of seedlings were browsed, suffering mean foliage loss of 90.5%. Focal seedlings were almost exclusively consumed by swamp wallabies Wallabia bicolor, an abundant generalist browser. Once a swamp wallaby investigated a seedling, the probability of consumption was high (86%). At the large scale, browsing of seedlings was delayed in patches with lower canopy cover and fewer browsed plant species. Seedlings in fern‐dominated patches escaped browsing for longer than those in grass‐dominated patches. At the small scale, browsing was delayed with higher cover of understorey vegetation. Associational refuge was provided by vegetation with characteristics, and at spatial scales, consistent with disrupted search and detection of focal seedlings by herbivores. Thus strategic placement of seedlings in existing vegetation – based on understanding which herbivore species is responsible and how it responds to vegetation – can take advantage of associational refuge during restoration. However, given rapid seedling detection by herbivores, associational refuge may be inadequate in the long‐term under high browsing pressure unless high absolute numbers of seedlings are planted among refuge.  相似文献

Objective: The objective was to examine the circadian changes in blood pressure and their relation to the metabolic syndrome and its components in Omani Arabs. Research Methods and Procedures: Ambulatory blood pressure (ABPM) was recorded in 1124 subjects from 5 large, extended, consanguineous, and young Arab pedigrees. According to the International Diabetes Federation's definition, 264 subjects had the metabolic syndrome, a prevalence of 23%. Subjects were defined as non‐dippers when their nocturnal systolic blood pressure (SBP) fell by <10% from daytime SBP. Results: Non‐dippers with the metabolic syndrome were 131 of 264 (50%), compared with 265 of 860 (31%) without the metabolic syndrome. Of the non‐dippers, 99 of 131 (76%) were females and 32 of 131 (24%) were males. Daytime and nighttime SBP and DBP and nighttime pulse pressure were significantly higher in non‐dipper subjects with the metabolic syndrome. The important determinants of a non‐dipping BP in this cohort were high BMI and high serum triglycerides. Discussion: We hypothesize that obesity and nocturnal volume‐dependent hypertension may be involved in the pathophysiology of non‐dipping in the metabolic syndrome. This study showed that non‐dipping BP was common in subjects with the metabolic syndrome. Higher 24‐hour blood pressure load may add to the indices of the overall cardiovascular burden already associated with the metabolic syndrome.  相似文献

Objective: It has been questioned whether insulin resistance or obesity is the central abnormality contributing to the cardiovascular risk factors dyslipidemia and hypertension in obesity. Research Methods and Procedures: We studied weight status [SD score (SDS)‐BMI], lipids (triglycerides, low‐density lipoprotein‐ and high‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol), blood pressure, and insulin resistance index [as homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) model] over a 1‐year period in 229 obese white children (median age 12 years). Results: Any degree of decrease in HOMA was associated with significant decreases in triglycerides (p < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), and diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), whereas the children with different changes in HOMA did not differ significantly in their weight changes. Only the children in the highest quartile of weight reduction (decrease in SDS‐BMI > 0.5) demonstrated a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), and triglycerides (p = 0.012), and an increase in high‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol (p = 0.023), whereas with a lower degree of weight loss, there were no significant changes in cardiovascular risk factors. In contrast with a lower degree of weight loss, a reduction of >0.5 SDS‐BMI was associated with a significant decrease in HOMA (p < 0.001). Discussion: Because blood pressure and triglycerides decreased with any degree of decrease in HOMA, independently of changes in weight status, these findings support the hypothesis that insulin resistance is the central abnormality contributing to these cardiovascular risk factors. Therefore, improving insulin resistance seems more important than reducing overweight to prevent or treat hypertension and dyslipidemia in obese children.  相似文献

There has been recent discussion about the evolutionary pressures underlying the long necks of extant giraffes and extinct sauropod dinosaurs. Here we summarise these debates and place them in a wider taxonomic context. We consider the evolution of long necks across a wide range of (both living and extinct) taxa and ask whether there has been a common selective factor or whether each case has a separate explanation. We conclude that in most cases long necks can be explained in terms of foraging requirements, and that alternative explanations in terms of sexual selection, thermoregulation and predation pressure are not as well supported. Specifically, in giraffe, tortoises, and perhaps sauropods there is likely to have been selection for high browsing. It the last case there may also have been selection for reaching otherwise inaccessible aquatic plants or for increasing the energetic efficiency of low browsing. For camels, wading birds and ratites, original selection was likely for increased leg length, with correlated selection for a longer neck to allow feeding and drinking at or near substrate level. For fish‐eating long‐necked birds and plesiosaurs a small head at the end of a long neck allows fast acceleration of the mouth to allow capture of elusive prey. A swan's long neck allows access to benthic vegetation, for vultures the long neck allows reaching deep into a carcass. Geese may be an unusual case where anti‐predator vigilance is important, but so may be energetically efficient low browsing. The one group for which we feel unable to draw firm conclusions are the pterosaurs, this is in keeping with the current uncertainty about the biology of this group. Despite foraging emerging as a dominant theme in selection for long necks, for almost every taxonomic group we have identified useful empirical work that would increase understanding of the selective costs and benefits of a long neck.  相似文献

A very long neck is a characteristic feature of most sauropod dinosaurs. In the genus Mamenchisaurus, neck length is extreme, greater than 40 percent of total body length. However, the posture, utilization, and selective advantage of very long necks in sauropods are still controversial. An excellently preserved skeleton of Mamenchisaurus youngi, including a complete neck, provides an opportunity for a comprehensive biomechanical analysis of neck posture and mobility. The biomechanical evidence indicates that Mamenchisaurus youngi had a nearly straight, near horizontal neck posture and browsed at low or medium heights. The results differ from the findings for some other sauropod species, like Euhelopus, Diplodocus, and Giraffatitan (Brachiosaurus) that had been analyzed in previous studies with similar methods. The selective advantage of extreme neck length in sauropods is likely advantageous for different feeding strategies.  相似文献

Question: How does regeneration response to a host‐specific, high‐severity, infrequent Dendroctonus rufipennis outbreak differ from our conceptualization of high‐severity, infrequent/low‐severity, frequent disturbance regimes in Picea engelmanniiAbies lasiocarpa communities? Location: Southern Utah, USA. Methods: One hundred and seven plots across a high‐elevation P. engelmannii forest were sampled to reconstruct pre‐outbreak overstory and seedling bank densities, and calculate their associated metrics of diversity. Decade of establishment by seedling bank trees indicated “chronic” and “pulse” regenerators. Results: The post‐outbreak overstory and seedling bank were dominated by A. lasiocarpa. Although Pinus flexilis, Pinus ponderosa, Picea pungens, and Psuedotsuga menziesii were present in the overstory, they were virtually absent in the seedling bank. Seedling bank recruitment of A. lasiocarpa and P. engelmannii has been occurring chronically for at least the last ~205 and ~152 years, respectively. A pulse response of seedling bank Populus tremuloides was apparent; however, results were complicated by intense ungulate browsing. Conclusions: Despite some similarities to the high‐severity, infrequent/low‐severity, frequent conceptualization of regeneration response to disturbance, the high‐severity D. rufipennis outbreak is best described by explicitly considering host specificity and severity. Although, the outbreak simultaneously promoted both a pulse of P. tremuloides and a release of chronically regenerated A. lasiocarpa, the P. tremuloides response was generally masked by ungulate browsing, and the regeneration response came overwhelmingly from the A. lasiocarpa seedling bank. In this landscape, once dominated by P. engelmannii, the chronically regenerating seedling bank, typically thought to take advantage of canopy gaps associated with low‐severity disturbances, is poised to dominate forest reorganization in response to the host‐specific outbreak.  相似文献

Body masses of some South American dinosaurs are estimated. The sauropod Argentinosaurus huinculensis reached 73 tonnes, and therefore, is the largest of all land animals whose mass has been rigorously obtained. Another sauropod, Antarctosaurus giganteus, was the second largest, at nearly 69 tonnes, while Antarctosaurus wichmannianus reached 34 tonnes. A third sauropod, the bizarre-looking Amargasaurus cazaui, was much smaller, with a body mass of only 2.5 tonnes. Among theropods, the body mass of the strangely looking, horned Carnotaurus sastrei, was volumetrically estimated at 1.5 tonnes, while allometric equations on limb measurements yielded overestimations. Moreover, the holotype specimen of Giganotosaurus carolinii (MUCPv-CH-1) was about as large as the average-sized Tyrannosaurus rex, and only marginally smaller than “Sue”, the largest specimen. However, a new dentary of Giganotosaurus (MUCPv-95) is 8% longer than that of the holotype. Assuming geometric similarity, that individual must have had a body mass above 8 tonnes and hence must have been the largest theropod ever found.  相似文献

Recent discoveries of abundant fossil footprints from the new Grand Staircase‐Escalante National Monument of southern Utah, have important implications for the spatial and temporal distribution of Mesozoic vertebrates in Triassic and Jurassic time. Since the monument's creation in 1996, fossil footprints have been reported from at least seven formations in the Mesozoic (Triassic‐Cretaceous) within the monument. By far the most significant of these discoveries are sauropod and theropod tracks from the upper part of the Middle Jurassic Entrada Sandstone and a large Apatopus trackway from the Late Triassic Chinle Formation. Tracks in the Entrada Sandstone are found at the same stratigraphic level as those in the Moab megatracksite, and so considerably extend this large ichnological complex. A wide‐gauge sauropod trackway (cf. Brontopodus) from this unit represents the first reported from the Entrada Sandstone, and so is the oldest known from the western United States. This trackway also reveals a tail trace, which is the first reliable record of a sauropod tail trace.  相似文献
