To enable the study of the population genetics of the tree sparrow (Passer montanus), which is distributed in many islands of Japan, nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from 32 individuals. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 17, and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.1250 to 0.9375. In eight of the nine loci, the heterozygosities were not significantly different from those expected from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Cross-species amplification in the russet sparrow (P. rutilans) was successful with all primer sets, which were highly polymorphic, suggesting these markers are useful for the population genetics of genus Passer.  相似文献

Questions: How are the early survival and growth of seedlings of Everglades tree species planted in an experimental setting on artificial tree islands affected by hydrology and substrate type? What are the implications of these responses for broader tree island restoration efforts? Location: Loxahatchee Impoundment Landscape Assessment (LILA), Boynton Beach, Florida, USA. Methods: An experiment was designed to test hydrological and substrate effects on seedling growth and survivorship. Two islands – a peat and a limestone‐core island representing two major types found in the Everglades – were constructed in four macrocosms. A mixture of eight tree species was planted on each island in March of 2006 and 2007. Survival and height growth of seedlings planted in 2006 were assessed periodically during the next two and a half years. Results: Survival and growth improved with increasing elevation on both tree island substrate types. Seedlings' survival and growth responses along a moisture gradient matched species distributions along natural hydrological gradients in the Everglades. The effect of substrate on seedling performance showed higher survival of most species on the limestone tree islands, and faster growth on their peat‐based counterparts. Conclusions: The present results could have profound implications for restoration of forests on existing landforms and artificial creation of tree islands. Knowledge of species tolerance to flooding and responses to different edaphic conditions present in wetlands is important in selecting suitable species to plant on restored tree islands  相似文献

The giant water bug, subfamily Lethocerinae, which has the largest body size among Belostomatidae, is known to be a vertebrate specialist that preys upon fish, amphibians and snakes. However, there have been no reports concerning predation on a turtle by Lethocerinae. Here, I report that a male giant water bug Kirkaldyia (Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) (58.09 mm in total length) was catching hold of a turtle Chinemys reevesii (34.14 mm in carapace length) in a ditch adjoining a paddy rice field. This is a first report of K. deyrolli eating a turtle.  相似文献

We tested for facultative changes in behavior of an aquaticinsect in response to cues from predation and for evolutionof prey behavior in response to experimental predation regimes.Larvae of the tree hole mosquito Aedes triseriatus reducedfiltering, browsing, and time below the surface in responseto water that had held a feeding larva of the predator Toxorhynchitesrutilus. We subjected experimental A. triseriatus populationsto culling of 50% of the larval population, either by T. rutiluspredation or by random removal. After two generations of laboratoryculling, behavior of the two treatment groups diverged. Aedestriseriatus in control-culled lines retained their facultativeshift from filtering to resting, but tended to lose the response of reduced browsing below the surface in water that had helda feeding predator. Predator-culled lines lost their facultativeresponse of reduced filtering in water that had held a feedingpredator and evolved toward more time resting and less timefiltering in both water that had held a feeding predator andwater that had held only A. triseriatus. Predator-culled linesretained their facultative response of reduced browsing belowthe surface in water that had held a feeding predator. Twofield populations and their reciprocal hybrids responded similarlyto cues from predation and did not differ in their evolutionaryresponse to experimental culling. We conclude that consistentpresence or absence of predation can select rapidly for divergencein prey behavior, including facultative behavioral responsesto predators.  相似文献

1. The spatial heterogeneity of ecosystems as well as temporal activity patterns of organisms can have far‐reaching effects on predator–prey relationships. We hypothesised that spatiotemporal constraints in mesohabitat use by benthic fish predators would reduce habitat overlap with benthic invertebrates and lead to mesohabitat‐specific predation risks. 2. We analysed the spatiotemporal activity patterns of two small‐bodied benthivorous fishes, gudgeon (Gobio gobio) and stone loach (Barbatula barbatula), and of benthic invertebrates in a small temperate stream during three 24‐h field experiments. By applying a novel method of field video observation, we monitored the spatiotemporal foraging behaviour of the fish in their natural environment. A parallel analysis of invertebrate mesohabitat use by means of small area Hess sampling allowed a direct estimation of habitat overlap at a pool–riffle scale. 3. Gudgeon showed a dominant spatial activity pattern preferring pools at all times of day, whereas stone loach used both mesohabitats but with a distinct temporal (nocturnal) activity pattern. The patterns of residence were not identical with those of active foraging. Invertebrate community composition differed significantly between mesohabitats but not between times of day. More than half of the total dissimilarity between pools and riffles was accounted for by six invertebrate taxa. Five of these were subject to higher fish predation in pools than in riffles. The total prey consumption of the two fish species together in pools was about three times as high as in riffles. Trophic niche breadth of stone loach and thus its predation range was broader than that of gudgeon. 4. These results indicate that the potential predation risk for stream invertebrates depends on the combination of spatial and temporal patterns of both predator and prey. Given the distinct differences in predation risk found between pools and riffles, we conclude that spatial heterogeneity at the mesohabitat scale can influence mechanisms and consequences of selective predation. We also suggest that the analysis of spatiotemporal predator–prey relationships should not be based on the premise that the main residence habitat and active foraging habitat of a predator are identical.  相似文献

Predator avoidance is likely to play a strong role in structuringspecies communities, even where actual mortality due to predationis low. In such systems, mortality may be low because predatoravoidance is effective, and if the threat of predation is liftedthen entire community structures may be altered. Where competitionis intense, then competitor avoidance may have a similar impacton communities. Avoidance behaviors have been documented fora wide range of species, but this is the first attempt to documentavoidance behavior within a large carnivore community. Audioplayback techniques are used to examine the risk perceivedby cheetahs from their two main competitors that are also theirmain predators, lions and hyenas. The results from these experimentsshow that cheetahs actively moved away from lion and hyenaplayback experiments, compared with dummy playbacks where nosound was played. Cheetahs showed no differences in their responsesto playbacks dependent on their sex or reproductive status,suggesting they were responding principally to a competitionrather than a predation threat. However, cheetahs were muchless likely to hunt after competitor playbacks than after dummyplaybacks, and this resulted in a lower kill rate after competitorplaybacks, demonstrating that the perceived presence of competitorshad a noticeable impact on the foraging rate of cheetahs. Furthermore,while cheetahs moved just as far following lion playbacks asafter hyena playbacks, they spent significantly more time lookingat the loudspeaker and were less likely to make a kill afterlion playbacks, suggesting that cheetahs perceive lions tobe a greater threat than hyenas.  相似文献

Epichloë fungi (Ascomycota: Clavicipitaceae) are endophytes of grasses that can produce epiphytic stromata on the culms of their hosts. The fungal stromata are visited by Botanophila flies for feeding and egg laying. We review research that has documented the heterothallic mating system of Epichloë, the mutualistic service of spermatization flies provide for the fungus, and host selection by flies. Flies display an active, stereotypical behavior immediately following oviposition by which spermatia are transferred endozoochorously to stromata. After eggs hatch larvae feed on developing perithecia. Several studies have focused on the cost (consumption of ascospores) to the fungus of engaging in the mutualism with its insect visitors. Generally, researchers have found benefits outweigh costs suggesting the mutualism is stable, however exceptions have been reported for Epichloë infecting some commercially cultivated grasses. Because Epichloë fungi are obligate outcrossers and flies are the major (perhaps only) vector of spermatia, the possibility exists that flies could promote reproductive isolation among Epichloë species through specific behavior. This idea has been tested using different approaches including observations of flies within screened cages containing Epichloë species and an analysis of fly gut content, which revealed no or very moderate selectivity by flies. Volatile fungal compounds are responsible for fly attraction and differ among Epichloë species. However, in a field bioassay using species-specific blends of the two predominant volatiles – a sesquiterpene alcohol (chokol K) and a methyl ester – flies showed no preference for specific blends. That is, flies do not appear able to distinguish between different fungal species based on their odor profiles. Thus, it appears that the flies' role in maintaining reproductive isolation among Epichloë species may be minor and that mechanisms of post-zygotic reproductive isolation are more important in keeping compatible species distinct. However, ethological mechanisms such as ‘stroma constancy’ favoring intraspecific mating may operate at a local scale and need to be investigated further.  相似文献

Little is known about the molecular processes involved in the phloem response to aphid feeding. We investigated molecular responses to aphid feeding on celery (Apium graveolenscv. Dulce) plants infested with the aphid Myzus persicae, as a means of identifying changes in phloem function. We used celery as our model species as it is easy to separate the phloem from the surrounding tissues in the petioles of mature leaves of this species. We generated a total of 1187 expressed sequence tags (ESTs), corresponding to 891 non-redundant genes. We analysed these ESTs in silico after cDNA macroarray hybridisation. Aphid feeding led to significant increase in RNA accumulation for 126 different genes. Different patterns of deregulation were observed, including transitory or stable induction 3 or 7days after infestation. The genes affected belonged to various functional categories and were induced systemically in the phloem after infestation. In particular, genes involved in cell wall modification, water transport, vitamin biosynthesis, photosynthesis, carbon assimilation and nitrogen and carbon mobilisation were up-regulated in the phloem. Further analysis of the response in the phloem or xylem suggested that a component of the response was developed more specifically in the phloem. However, this component was different from the stress responses in the phloem driven by pathogen infection. Our results indicate that the phloem is actively involved in multiple adjustments, recruiting metabolic pathways and in structural changes far from aphid feeding sites. 对1993-2005年稻瘿蚊灯下虫量动态进行分析。结果表明:灯下稻瘿蚊诱集虫量与田间稻瘿蚊虫害的发生程度存在较高的关联性,可利用诱集虫量来预测预报稻瘿蚊的发生;灯下稻瘿蚊每年始见期不定,出现在第1代期的频率为38.46%,出现在第2代期的频率为13.33%,6月底至7月初的第3代期是主要的始见期,其频率为48.21%;第1、2代稻瘿蚊灯下诱集虫量通常极少,从第3代开始,灯下稻瘿蚊诱集虫量迅速增加,测报灯下稻瘿蚊诱集虫量以第3、4、5代居多,这与田间稻瘿蚊以第3、4、5代为主害代的实际危害情况相符合。  相似文献

A video technique that allows simultaneous behavioural observations of several experimental replicates under field and laboratory conditions is described. The technique was used to analyse predation risk of parasitised aphids in a sugar beet field. The images of 16 black and white video cameras were recorded by a video multiplexer in combination with a time-lapse video recorder. Each camera was weather protected and equipped with a single infrared diode to allow observations during night times. Single leaves carrying aphid mummies only or mummies and unparasitised aphids were monitored. All colonies were exposed to predation and parasitation by the community of natural enemies in the field. Colonies with mummies and unparasitised aphids were visited significantly more often by predators than those without additional aphids. Predators also stayed significantly longer in patches with unparasitised aphids. Although an equal proportion of aphid mummies were destroyed in both treatments, the video analysis showed differences in predator species spectrum between treatments. In patches with aphids, coccinellid and hemipteran predators preyed on mummies, while in patches with only mummies, chrysopids accounted for most of the damage. The decrease in parasitoid survival could be attributed to the increasing number of predator visits in aphid patches and to a lesser extent to the decreasing number of unparasitised aphids (alternative prey). Parasitoid survival in colonies without alternative prey was correlated with the number of predator visits and the time predators spent on a leaf.Continuous video observations gave additional behavioural information for the interpretation of field data. Other prospective research fields for the use of the multi video camera technique are outlined and general advantages and disadvantages are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis During their seaward migration, juvenile salmonids encounter structural and visual cover which varies between and within watersheds. In this study, the effects of two types of cover (turbidity and artificial vegetation) on the predation mortality of juvenile salmonids exposed to fish piscivores was investigated in outdoor concrete ponds. During experiments, adult coastal cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii, were allowed to feed on juvenile salmonid prey — chinook salmon, O. tshawytscha, chum salmon, O. keta, sockeye salmon, O. nerka, and cutthroat trout — in separate trials. Daily instantaneous per capita predation rate was determined for each turbidity and vegetation treatment, within each trial. Mean predation rates varied between 1% and 76% daily. In the presence of cover, mean daily predation rates were 10–75% lower than those in controls (no vegetation and clear water), depending on prey species. Predation rates were significantly lower in the presence of vegetation cover and did not covary with prey size or species. The effects of turbidity were generally not significant and were not additive with the effects of vegetation. However, turbidity appeared to significantly reduce the effectiveness of vegetation as cover for juvenile chinook and sockeye salmon. We suggest that these two forms of cover do not affect risk of predation by fish piscivores to juvenile salmonids via the same mechanism.  相似文献

Success in biological weed control programs depends upon the ability of host-specific herbivores to suppress populations of their host plant. While pre-release predictions of field host range (i.e., specificity) appear widely accurate, predictions about which agent or agent combination may suppress plant populations have lately been compared to predictions in a lottery. The history of weed biocontrol does not offer immediately obvious approaches to improve the lottery model, however, pre-release assessments of the impact of different herbivore densities on the invasive plant may provide an opportunity to improve predictions of success. In this paper, we report on the impact of the leaf beetle Galerucella birmanica on growth and reproduction of water chestnut, Trapa natans, in the native range in China. At low herbivore densities (10–50 larvae/rosette), plants compensated for leaf herbivory by increasing leaf production at the expense of reproductive effort. Inoculating >50 first instar larvae per rosette greatly suppressed biomass production and plants were unable to grow when three or more G. birmanica pairs were released per seven rosettes. In the native range, similar densities are found in the field, resulting in complete defoliation of T. natans. Our study indicates that G. birmanica feeding has significant negative impacts on T. natans. This chrysomelid species appears to be a promising biological control agent and we would predict that the species will be able to attain sufficiently high populations to control its host plant—if approved for release in North America.  相似文献

Generalist predators have the capacity to exert significant pressure on prey populations. However, integrating them into biological control programs relies on a detailed understanding of their foraging behavior and the levels of trophic connectedness with pest species. Carabid beetles are important predators of slugs, pests of agricultural, floricultural and horticultural crops worldwide, but these interactions have been rarely studied outside the Western Palearctic ecozone. Diagnostic molecular gut-content analysis was used to examine the strength of trophic pathways between a community of carabid beetles and two slug species, the exotic Deroceras reticulatum and native Deroceras laeve, in strawberry agroecosystems. Strawberries were grown according to standard horticultural practices for central Kentucky, following traditional bare ground planting or with the addition of detrital subsidies, to quantify the impact of habitat management on the abundance of pests and the strength of these trophic pathways. Following laboratory characterization of species-specific molecular markers targeting both Deroceras species, carabid beetles collected from a strawberry agroecosystem were screened for slug DNA. Field collections revealed important food web pathways existed between Harpalus pensylvanicus and D. reticulatum, with 7.2% screening positive for these prey yet none screening positive for D. laeve. In contrast, Chlaenius tricolor was found to feed on both slug species in the field, with 16% screening positive for both Deroceras. Despite below normal rainfall limiting slug densities in the field, the results presented here reveal the potential importance of carabid beetles in slug population dynamics in the Nearctic.  相似文献

There is growing concern that global environmental change might exacerbate the ecological impacts of invasive species by increasing their per capita effects on native species. However, the mechanisms underlying such shifts in interaction strength are poorly understood. Here, we test whether ocean acidification, driven by elevated seawater pCO2, increases the susceptibility of native Olympia oysters to predation by invasive snails. Oysters raised under elevated pCO2 experienced a 20% increase in drilling predation. When presented alongside control oysters in a choice experiment, 48% more high-CO2 oysters were consumed. The invasive snails were tolerant of elevated CO2 with no change in feeding behaviour. Oysters raised under acidified conditions did not have thinner shells, but were 29–40% smaller than control oysters, and these smaller individuals were consumed at disproportionately greater rates. Reduction in prey size is a common response to environmental stress that may drive increasing per capita effects of stress-tolerant invasive predators.  相似文献

Heteropteran predators constitute an important component of predatory guilds in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Most heteropteran species have generalist diets, and intraguild predation has been documented in most heteropteran families. Zoophytophagous species also frequently engage in intraguild interactions. An increase in extraguild prey density is often predicted to reduce intraguild predation between guild members by providing abundant alternate prey. However, an increase of extraguild prey density may also be associated with an increase in the density of intraguild predators, which could instead strengthen intraguild predation. Evaluating the combined effect of these potentially opposing influences on intraguild predation is difficult. Most studies have been carried out in the laboratory, using artificially simplified communities of predators and prey and employing spatial and temporal scales that may not reflect field conditions. We review experimental studies examining how extraguild prey density influences the intensity of intraguild predation and then report an observational case study examining the influence of extraguild prey density on the intensity of intraguild predation at larger spatial and temporal scales in unmanipulated cotton fields. Fields with more abundant extraguild prey (aphids, mites) were not associated with elevated densities of intraguild predators, and were strongly associated with increased survival of intraguild prey (lacewing larvae). In this system, the ability of extraguild prey to relax the intensity of intraguild predation, as previously documented in small-scale field experiments, also extends to the larger spatial and temporal scales of commercial agriculture.  相似文献
