In this paper, behavior of hard X-ray (HXR) anisotropy and its intensity along the anode bar of the APF plasma focus device (16 kV, 36 ??F, 115 nH) with different anode tip materials is studied. The signals obtained by scintillation detectors by a special arrangement at each angular position show that the employment of higher Z anode insert materials not only increases the intensity of HXR signal, but also results in the high degree of HXR emission isotropy. The highest HXR intensity was observed with a conic W anode insert and the lowest, with a flat Al anode insert. The side-on emitted intensity along the anode bar has been studied by moving the scintillation detector in the direction of the central electrode axis. For Pyrex and quartz insulators, the lengths of 40 and 50 mm, respectively, would seem optimal to produce the maximum HXR intensity. Also the Pyrex insulator would cause a higher HXR intensity than the quartz insulator.  相似文献

The research was provided on the small plasma focus device with the Mather-type electrodes in configuration with an auxiliary electrode placed in front of the anode. It works at the current maximum of 200 kA. The total neutron yield from D-D reaction reaches 105–107 per one shot. The hard X-rays and neutrons were detected with scintillation detectors and the soft X-rays with a PIN detector and four MCP frames. We present preliminary results obtained from different configurations of the anode (inner electrode) and auxiliary electrode and we compare these results with that obtained in configuration without auxiliary electrode. The auxiliary electrode decreased both the neutron yield and the time of hard X-ray and neutron production. Different electrode faces has influence on the energy distribution of generated neutrons.  相似文献

The effect of the elemental composition of the anode material on the parameters and X-ray spectrum of micropinch discharge plasma have been studied using a low-inductance vacuum spark device. It is shown that the plasma electron temperature T e and intensity of hard X-ray emission increase with increasing nuclear charge number Z of the anode material of the discharge system.  相似文献

Results from experimental studies on the implosion of arrays made of kapron fibers coated with different metals (Al, In, Sn, and Bi) are presented. It is shown that the power, total energy, and spectrum of radiation emitted by the imploding array depend on the number of metallized fibers and the mass of the metal layer deposited on them but are independent of the metal characteristics (density, atomic number, etc.). Analysis of frame X-ray images shows that the Z-pinches formed in the implosion of metallized kapron fiber arrays are more stable than those formed in wire arrays and that MHD perturbations in them develop at a slower growth rate. Due to the lower rate of plasma production from kapron fibers, the plasma formed at the periphery of the array forms a layer that plays the role of a hohlraum wall partially trapping soft X-ray emission of the Z-pinch formed in the implosion of the material of the deposited metal layer. The closure of the anode aperture doubles the energy of radiation emitted in the radial direction.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of hard X-ray (HXR) emission in the photon energy range above 20 keV from dense radiating Z-pinch plasmas. The work is aimed at revealing the nature of fast-electron (electron beam) generation during the implosion of cylindrical and conical wire arrays in the Angara-5-1 facility at currents of up to 3 MA. It is found that the plasma implosion zippering caused by the inclination of wires affects the parameters of the HXR pulse emitted during the implosion of a conical array. It is shown that HXR emission correlates well with the decay of the plasma column near the cathode in the stagnation phase. HXR images of the pinch are produced by the bremsstrahlung of fast electrons generated during plasma column decay and interacting with plasma ions and the anode target. It is found that the use of conical arrays makes it possible to control the direction of plasma implosion zippering and the spatiotemporal and energy parameters of the pinch X-ray emission, in particular the X-ray yield. For wire array with diameters of 12 mm and linear masses of 200–400 μg/cm, the current of the fast electron beam is 20 kA and its energy is 60 J, which is about 1/500 of the energy of the main soft X-ray pulse.  相似文献

Summary The frequency of dicentric chromosomes induced by the irradiation of human lymphocytes inG 0 phase was determined with hard (150 kV) and soft (30 kV) X-rays. When a linear-quadratic dose-effect relation was used to fit the experimental data, a significant linear contribution was found for 30 kV X-rays. The RBE of 30 kV compared with 150 kV X-rays approaches the value 3 at a 30 kV X-ray dose of 20 rad and decreases with increasing dose. From the results it may be concluded that chromatids with primary breaks, undergoing second order reactions and thus forming dicentric chromosomes, are produced by traversals of low-energy electrons through chromatin material.  相似文献

Nucleic acid fragmentation (footprinting) by ·OH radicals is used often as a tool to probe nucleic acid structure and nucleic acid–protein interactions. This method has proven valuable because it provides structural information with single base pair resolution. Recent developments in the field introduced the ‘synchrotron X-ray footprinting’ method, which uses a high-flux X-ray source to produce single base pair fragmentation of nucleic acid in tens of milliseconds. We developed a complementary method that utilizes X-rays generated from a conventional rotating anode machine in which nucleic acid footprints can be generated by X-ray exposures as short as 100–300 ms. Our theoretical and experimental studies indicate that efficient cleavage of nucleic acids by X-rays depends upon sample preparation, energy of the X-ray source and the beam intensity. In addition, using this experimental set up, we demonstrated the feasibility of conducting X-ray footprinting to produce protein–DNA protection portraits at sub-second timescales.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the generation of hard X-ray (HXR) emission with photon energies above 20 keV during the implosion of wire arrays in the Angara-5-1 facility. An analysis of X-ray images of the Z-pinch shows that the dimensions and spatial structures of the emitting regions are different for hard and soft X rays. It is found that the HXR emission peak is delayed with respect to the soft X-ray (SXR) one. The dependence of the HXR power on the material, initial diameter, and mass (implosion time) of the wire array is determined. It is shown that the HXR intensity in the spectral range >50 keV is several orders higher than the emission intensity in the high-energy tail of the SXR spectrum (assuming that this spectrum is thermal). A comparison of the time evolution and spatial localization of the HXR and SXR sources during the implosion of wire arrays indicates the presence of a new superthermal phenomenon that differs qualitatively from the processes determining the peak power of the SXR pulse. Possible mechanisms that can be responsible for the generation of HXR pulses are considered.  相似文献

Peculiarities of detecting pulses of high-energy runaway electrons and the accompanying X-rays generated by high-voltage nanosecond discharges at high overvoltages in dense gases are discussed. Methods for overcoming difficulties encountered in such measurements are demonstrated. Different techniques for detecting runaway electrons and X-rays generated by discharges in open atmosphere are described, and typical errors that may be done when interpreting measurement results are considered. Experiments with the use of a small-size generator of nanosecond pulses with the idle-running voltage of 250–270 kV and stored energy of ~0.5 J have been carried out. It is shown that, in measuring runaway electron pulses by using an experimental configuration with a grid anode, a major portion of the recorded signal is attributed to electromagnetic disturbances. It is found that X-rays are mainly generated due to the deceleration of runaway electrons in the anode, rather than in gas. The number of runaway electrons with energies ~300 keV does not exceed 109 per shot, and the X-ray dose is 60–200 μR/shot, depending on the anode material.  相似文献

Recently, we developed a soft X-ray microscope called the scanning-electron generation X-ray microscope (SGXM), which consists of a simple X-ray detection system that detects X-rays emitted from the interaction between a scanning electron beam (EB) and the thin film of the sample mount. We present herein a three-dimensional (3D) X-ray detection system that is based on the SGXM technology and designed for studying atmospheric biological samples. This 3D X-ray detection system contains a linear X-ray photodiode (PD) array. The specimens are placed under a CuZn-coated Si3N4 thin film, which is attached to an atmospheric sample holder. Multiple tilt X-ray images of the samples are detected simultaneously by the linear array of X-ray PDs, and the 3D structure is calculated by a new 3D reconstruction method that uses a simulated-annealing algorithm. The resulting 3D models clearly reveal the inner structure of the bacterium. In addition, the proposed method can easily be used for diverse samples in a broad range of scientific fields.  相似文献

IntroductionLow-kV IORT (Low kilovoltage intraoperative radiotherapy) using INTRABEAM machine and dedicated spherical applicators is a candidate modality for breast cancer treatment. The current study aims to quantify the RBE (relative biologic effectiveness) variations of emitted X-rays from the surface of different spherical applicators and bare probe through a hybrid Monte Carlo (MC) simulation approach.Materials and methodsA validated MC model of INTRABEAM machine and different applicator diameters, based on GEANT4 Toolkit, was employed for RBE evaluation. To doing so, scored X-ray energy spectra at the surface of each applicator diameter/bare probe were used to calculate the corresponding secondary electron energy spectra at various distances inside the water and breast tissue. Then, MCDS (Monte Carlo damage simulation) code was used to calculate the RBE values according to the calculated electron spectra.ResultsPresence of spherical applicators can increase the RBE of emitted X-rays from the bare probe by about 22.3%. In return, changing the applicator diameter has a minimal impact (about 3.2%) on RBE variation of emitted X-rays from each applicator surface. By increasing the distance from applicator surface, the RBE increments too, so that its value enhances by about 10% with moving from 2 to 10 mm distance. Calculated RBE values within the breast tissue were higher than those of water by about 4% maximum value.ConclusionBall section of spherical IORT applicators can affect the RBE value of the emitted X-rays from INTRABEAM machine. Increased RBE of breast tissue can reduce the prescribed dose for breast irradiation if INTRABEAM machine has been calibrated inside the water.  相似文献

Time-resolved X-ray crystallography and solution scattering have been successfully conducted on proteins on time-scales down to around 100 ps, set by the duration of the hard X-ray pulses emitted by synchrotron sources. The advent of hard X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs), which emit extremely intense, very brief, coherent X-ray pulses, opens the exciting possibility of time-resolved experiments with femtosecond time resolution on macromolecular structure, in both single crystals and solution. The X-ray pulses emitted by an FEL differ greatly in many properties from those emitted by a synchrotron, in ways that at first glance make time-resolved measurements of X-ray scattering with the required accuracy extremely challenging. This opens up several questions which I consider in this brief overview. Are there likely to be chemically and biologically interesting structural changes to be revealed on the femtosecond time-scale? How shall time-resolved experiments best be designed and conducted to exploit the properties of FELs and overcome challenges that they pose? To date, fast time-resolved reactions have been initiated by a brief laser pulse, which obviously requires that the system under study be light-sensitive. Although this is true for proteins of the visual system and for signalling photoreceptors, it is not naturally the case for most interesting biological systems. To generate more biological targets for time-resolved study, can this limitation be overcome by optogenetic, chemical or other means?  相似文献

Results are presented from measurements of the anisotropy of energy losses in high-current Z-pinches produced by the implosion of wire arrays at the ANGARA-5-1 facility at load currents of up to 4MA. The energy losses were measured in the radial direction and along the pinch axis from the anode side. The main diagnostics were time-integrated thermocouple calorimeters, nanosecond X-ray diodes (XRDs) with different filters, and a foil radiation calorimeter with a time resolution of 2 μs. The azimuthal anisotropy of energy losses was measured for different wire array configurations and different shapes of the high-voltage electrode. The presence of strong initial azimuthal inhomogeneity of the wire mass distribution (sectioned arrays), as well as the use of conical electrodes instead of plane ones, does not increase the azimuthal inhomogeneity of the total energy losses. For cylindrical wire arrays, energy losses in the radial direction are compared with those along the pinch axis. According to XRD and calorimetric measurements, the radiation yield per unit solid angle along the pinch axis is two to three times lower than that in the radial direction. In the axial direction, the energy flux density of the expanding plasma is two to three times lower than the radiation intensity. The measured radiation yield across the pinch is 2.5–5 kJ/sr, while that along the pinch axis is 1–2 kJ/sr. The results obtained by means of XRDs agree to within measurement errors with those obtained using the radiation calorimeter. It is found that the energy per unit solid angle carried by the expanding plasma in the radial direction does not exceed 10% of the soft X-ray yield. Analysis of the structure of time-integrated pinhole images and signals from the radial and axial XRDs shows that radiation emitted in the radial direction from the hot central region of the pinch is partially screened by the less dense surrounding plasma halo, whereas radiation emitted in the axial direction is a superposition of the emissions from the hot dense central region of the pinch and the colder less dense peripheral plasma.  相似文献

Crustaceans are known for their hard, calcified exoskeleton; however some regions appear different in colour and opacity. These include leg and cheliped tips in the grapsid crab, Metopograpsus frontalis. The chelipeds and leg tips contain only trace levels of calcium but a significant mass of the halogens, chlorine (Cl) and bromine (Br). In contrast, the carapace is heavily calcified and contains only a trace mass of Cl and no Br. In transverse section across the non-calcified tip regions of cheliped and leg the mass percent of halogens varies with position. As such, the exoskeleton of M. frontalis provides a useful model to examine a possible correlation of halogen concentration with the physical properties of hardness (H) and reduced elastic modulus (Er), within a chitin-based matrix. Previously published work suggests a correlation exists between Cl concentration and hardness in similar tissues that contain a metal (e.g. zinc). However, in M. frontalis H and Er did not vary significantly across cheliped or leg tip despite differences in halogen concentration. The non-calcified regions of M. frontalis are less hard and less stiff than the carapace but equivalent to values found for insect cuticle lacking metals. Cheliped tips showed a complex morphological layering that differed from leg tips.  相似文献

Growth and shaping in colonial hydroids (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) are realized due to the functioning of special colony elements, growing tips located at the terminuses of branched colony body. Unlike in plants, the growing tips of colonial hydroids are sites of active cell movements related to morphogenesis and lacking proliferation. The activity of hydroid growing tips is expressed as growth pulsations: cyclic repetitions of their apex extensions and retractions. The parameters of growth pulsations are species specific and related to the shape of a forming element. Here, the succession of cell movements and changes in mutual arrangement within the growing tip are described in detail at all pulsation phases. The role of the inner cell layer in the tip activity was demonstrated for the first time. Relationships between the growing tip parameters, length and diameter, and pulsations are discussed. A scheme is proposed for cyclic processes in both epithelial layers. An explanation is provided for the two-step mode of growth pulsations with relative independence of the main phases. It was proposed that successive activities of the tip ecto-and endoderm serve as driving forces provided there is a hard outer skeleton. This scheme makes it possible to explain some patterns of growth and morphogenesis in colonial hydroids, such as gradually increasing growth rate of a new tip and its maximum growth rate, differences in the parameters of growth pulsations between shoot and stolon tips, shoot base inclination towards the stolon tip, etc., and provides a basis for further improvement of the model of morphogenesis in hydroids.  相似文献

Over the past years, several in vitro studies have been performed on DNA damage induced by soft X-rays, especially in the energy range below 50 keV. Radiation effects originating from such low-energy photons are relevant in the context of medical diagnostics, for example, mammography, or of accidental exposure to scattered radiation. The present study was initiated to investigate the X-ray energy-dependent induction of stable and unstable chromosomal aberrations in the human mammary epithelial cell line 184A1. Three colour fluorescence in situ hybridisation was applied to identify chromosomal damage in chromosomes 1, 8 and 17, induced by 10-kV or 25-kV soft X-rays as well as by 200-kV X-rays as a reference quality. The overall results confirm the X-ray energy dependencies published for human lymphocytes showing increasing chromosomal aberration frequencies and higher aberration complexity with decreasing X-ray energy and increasing dose. Comparing the obtained dose dependencies, ratios of 0.84 ± 0.09 and 1.22 ± 0.18 were revealed for stable translocations induced by 25- and 10-kV X-rays, respectively, using 200-kV X-rays as reference. Moreover, the analysis of the minimum number of breaks required to form the visible chromosomal damage resulted in similar ratios of 0.93 ± 0.07 for 25-kV X-rays and 1.25 ± 0.10 for 10-kV X-rays relative to 200-kV X-rays. In addition, non-DNA-proportional contributions of chromosomes 8 and 17 to the whole DNA damage and deviations from the expected 1:1 ratio of translocations and dicentrics were observed for cell line 184A1.  相似文献

In stereotactic interstitial radiotherapy, small radioactive sources are placed within the brain tumor to deliver locally high radiation doses. The choice of the radioisotope depends upon the dose distribution around the isotope, energy of the emitted radiation, relative biological effectiveness, and finally, the cost and availability of the isotope. We have analyzed 198gold, 125iodine and 192iridium in terms of these four factors. Our results have shown that 125I is superior to the other two isotopes due to its soft X-rays and dosimetric as well as radiobiological properties. Unfortunately, it is the most expensive of these radioisotopes, and can be difficult to obtain in specific activities.  相似文献

Branching morphogenesis of epithelia is an important mechanism in animal development, being responsible for the characteristic architectures of glandular organs such as kidney, lung, prostate and salivary gland. In these systems, new branches usually arise at the tips of existing branches. Recent studies, particularly in kidney, have shown that tip cells express a set of genes distinct from those in the stalks. Tip cells also undergo most cell proliferation, daughter cells either remaining in the tip or being left behind as the tips advance, to differentiate and contribute to new stalk. Published time-lapse observations have suggested, though, that new branches may be able to arise from stalks. This happens so rarely, however, that it is not clear whether this reflects true plasticity and reversal of differentiation, or whether it is just an occasional instance of groups of tip cells being "left behind" by error in a mainly stalk zone. To determine whether cells that have differentiated into stalks really do retain the ability to make new tips, we have removed existing tips from stalks, verified that the stalks are free of tip cells, and assessed the ability of tip-free stalks to initiate new branches. We find stalks to be fully capable of regenerating tips that express typical tip markers, with these tips going on to form epithelial trees, at high frequency. The transition from tip to stalk is therefore reversible, at least for early stages of development. This observation has major implications for models of pattern formation in branching trees, and may also be important for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the parameters of an X-pinch-based neutron source made of 70- to 80-μm-diameter deuterated polyethylene fibers. At currents of up to 1.7 MA and a current rise time of ~150 ns, hot plasma spots were observed in the fiber crossing region. The formation of hot spots was accompanied by the generation of short soft X-ray pulses with a duration of 2–4 ns, as well as by neutron emission. The neutron energy was measured using the time-of-flight technique in four directions, at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° with respect to the load axis. The mean energy of the neutrons emitted along the axis towards the anode and cathode was found to be 2.0 ± 0.2 and 2.6 ± 0.1 MeV, respectively, and that of neutrons emitted in two opposite directions along the radius, 2.5 ± 0.1 and 2.4 ± 0.1 MeV. The maximum neutron yield at a current amplitude of 1.6 MA was of 1010 neutrons per shot.  相似文献
