This study examined the effects of electroencephalographic-(EEG-) driven photic stimulation on a case of depressive disorder, as measured by a psychometric test of mood states, EEG parameters, and several autonomic indices. The EEG-driven photic stimulation enhances the alpha rhythm of brain waves using photic signals, the brightness of which is modulated by a subject's own alpha rhythm. The patient was a 37-year-old businessman, who was treated for depression with medication during the 13 months prior to his first visit to our hospital. He underwent two sets of inpatient treatment sessions, comprising first 16 and then 18 treatment sessions. The treatments brought about the following changes: an improvement in general mood state, alpha rhythm increase, cardiac parasympathetic suppression, and increased skin conductance level. In addition, significant correlations between alpha rhythm increase and cardiac parasympathetic suppression or cardiac sympathetic predominance were observed with each inpatient treatment. Significant correlations between alpha rhythm increase, cardiac parasympathetic suppression, or cardiac sympathetic predominance and the improvement of general mood state were also observed. Thus, from these observations, it was concluded that the alpha enhancement induced by EEG-driven photic stimulation produced an improvement in the patient's depressive symptomatology connected with cardiac parasympathetic suppression and sympathetic predominance.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to explain the mechanism of the effect of low-level modulated microwave radiation on brain bioelectrical oscillations. The proposed model of excitation by low-level microwave radiation bases on the influence of water polarization on hydrogen bonding forces between water molecules, caused by this the enhancement of diffusion and consequences on neurotransmitters transit time and neuron resting potential. Modulated microwave radiation causes periodic alteration of the neurophysiologic parameters and parametric excitation of brain bioelectric oscillations. The experiments to detect logical outcome of the mechanism on physiological level were carried out on 15 human volunteers. The 450-MHz microwave radiation modulated at 7, 40 and 1000 Hz frequencies was applied at the field power density of 0.16 mW/cm2. A relative change in the EEG power with and without radiation during 10 cycles was used as a quantitative measure. Experimental data demonstrated that modulated at 40 Hz microwave radiation enhanced EEG power in EEG alpha and beta frequency bands. No significant alterations were detected at 7 and 1000 Hz modulation frequencies. These results are in good agreement with the theory of parametric excitation of the brain bioelectric oscillations caused by the periodic alteration of neurophysiologic parameters and support the proposed mechanism. The proposed theoretical framework has been shown to predict the results of experimental study. The suggested mechanism, free of the restrictions related to field strength or time constant, is the first one providing explanation of low-level microwave radiation effects.  相似文献

Aim of this preliminary study was to examine and compare topographic distribution of Higuchi's fractal dimension (FD, measure of signal complexity) of EEG signals between states of relaxed wakefulness and drowsiness, as well as their FD differences. The experiments were performed on 10 healthy individuals using a fourteen-channel montage. An explanation is offered on the causes of the detected FD changes. FD values of 60 s records belonging to wake (Hori's stage 1) and drowsy (Hori's stages 2-4) states were calculated for each channel and each subject. In 136 out of 140 epochs an increase in FD was obtained. Relationship between signal FD and its relative alpha amplitude was mathematically modeled and we quantitatively demonstrated that the increase in FD was predominantly due to a reduction in alpha activity. The model was generalized to include other EEG oscillations. By averaging FD values for each channel across 10 subjects, four clusters (O2O1; T6P4T5P3; C3F3F4C4F8F7; T4T3) for the wake and two clusters (O2O1P3T6P4T5; C3C4F4F3F8T4T3F7) for the drowsy state were statistically verified. Topographic distribution of FD values in wakefulness showed a lateral symmetry and a partial fronto-occipital gradient. In drowsiness, a reduction in the number of clusters was detected, due to regrouping of channels T3, T4, O1 and O2. Topographic distribution of absolute FD differences revealed largest values at F7, O1 and F3. Reorganization of channel clusters showed that regionalized brain activity, specific for wakefulness, became more global by entering into drowsiness. Since the global increase in FD during wake-to-drowsy transition correlated with the decrease of alpha power, we inferred that increase of EEG complexity may not necessarily be an index of brain activation.  相似文献

It has been reported that human subjects exposed to electromagnetic fields exhibit changes in human EEG signals at the frequency of stimulation. The aim of the present study was to expose different parts of the brain to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields locally and investigate EEG power spectrum alters at the frequency of stimulation. EEG relative power spectrum were evaluated at 3, 5, 10, 17, and 45 Hz frequencies at T4, T3, F3, Cz, and F4 points, respectively, when these points were exposed to magnetic fields with similar frequencies and 100 μT intensity. The paired t-test results showed that power value of EEG did not alter significantly at the frequency of stimulation (P < 0.05). Further, significant changes in different EEG bands caused by locally exposing to ELF-MF in different points of brain were observed. The changes in the EEG bands were not limited necessarily to the exposure point.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of modulated microwave exposure on human EEG of individual subjects. The experiments were carried out on four different groups of healthy volunteers. The 450 MHz microwave radiation modulated at 7 Hz (first group, 19 subjects), 14 and 21 Hz (second group, 13 subjects), 40 and 70 Hz (third group, 15 subjects), 217 and 1000 Hz (fourth group, 19 subjects) frequencies was applied. The field power density at the scalp was 0.16 mW/cm(2). The calculated spatial peak SAR averaged over 1 g was 0.303 W/kg. Ten cycles of the exposure (1 min off and 1 min on) at fixed modulation frequencies were applied. All subjects completed the experimental protocols with exposure and sham. The exposed and sham-exposed subjects were randomly assigned. A computer also randomly assigned the succession of modulation frequencies. Our results showed that microwave exposure increased the EEG energy. Relative changes in the EEG beta1 power in P3-P4 channels were selected for evaluation of individual sensitivity. The rate of subjects significantly affected is similar in all groups except for the 1000 Hz group: in first group 3 subjects (16%) at 7 Hz modulation; in second group 4 subjects (31%) at 14 Hz modulation and 3 subjects (23%) at 21 Hz modulation; in third group 3 subjects (20%) at 40 Hz and 2 subjects (13%) at 70 Hz modulation; in fourth group 3 subjects (16%) at 217 Hz and 0 subjects at 1000 Hz modulation frequency.  相似文献

The photoinduced resonance EEG response in the occipital area (O1 and O2) of right-handed men during 12-s intermittent photic stimulation was studied as a function of flash frequency (6, 10, or 16 Hz) and intensity (5 levels from 0.05 to 0.7 J). The EEG power in the narrow band coinciding with stimulation frequency was FFT-extracted in 3-s intervals before, during, and after each stimulation. It was found that increase in flash intensity was accompanied by an enhancement of the resonance EEG response and decrease in time of reaching its maximal value. These changes were to a greater extent characteristic for the right hemisphere. The low-intensity stimulation induced more pronounced resonance effects in the left hemisphere, whereas the high-intensity flashes to a greater extent involved the right hemisphere. The asymmetry of the EEG response to stimulation of the middle intensity was slight, and the time of reaching the maximal level of the resonance activation was about 6-8 s. A relatively high level of the resonance EEG response was observed during stimulation with the frequency of 10 Hz, even in case of its minimal intensity. The most pronounced resonance EEG response was induced in the right occipital area by the high-intensity 16-Hz stimulation. The enhanced sensitivity of the right hemisphere to intensity of flashes is interpreted as an indication of interhemispheric differences in nonspecific adaptive mechanisms of the brain.  相似文献

This study is aimed at evaluating the effect of microwave radiation on human brain bioelectric activity at different levels of exposure. For this purpose, 450 MHz microwave exposure modulated at 40 Hz frequency was applied to a group of 15 healthy volunteers at two different specific absorption rate (SAR) levels: a higher level of 0.303 W/kg (field strength 24.5 V/m) and a lower level of 0.003 W/kg (field strength 2.45 V/m). Ten exposure cycles (1 min off and 1 min on) at fixed SAR values were applied. A resting eyes‐closed electroencephalogram (EEG) was continuously recorded. Results showed a statistically significant increase in the EEG power in the EEG beta2 (157%), beta1 (61%) and alpha (68%) frequency bands at the higher SAR level, and in the beta2 (39%) frequency band at the lower SAR level. Statistically significant changes were detected for six individual subjects in the EEG alpha band and four subjects in the beta1 and beta2 bands at the higher SAR level; three subjects were affected in the alpha, beta1 and beta2 bands at the lower SAR level. The study showed that decreasing the SAR 100 times reduced the related changes in the EEG three to six times and the number of affected subjects, but did not exclude the effect. In acute experiments on cats under chloralose anesthesia (70 mg/kg) unit activity was recorded extra- and intracellularly in the sensomotor cortex (areas 4 and 6) during prolonged (up to 1000 msec) photic stimulation. Responses of on-off type were generated by 100% of neurons tested to photic stimuli whose duration corresponded to the recovery cycle of functional changes after a single flash, determined by the paired stimulation method. Cutaneous stimulation affected the appearance of the photic off response if it led to a spike discharge of the neuron before the off response. It is suggested that IPSPs of cortical neurons largely determine both the duration of the cycle of functional recovery after a single flash and also differences in the pattern of generation of the off response and its interaction with responses to cutaneous stimulation.A. Different hypothesis of the alpha rhythm origin were tested by dipole simulation of the alpha rhythm sources. EEG was recorded during driving photic stimulation in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. Models with fixed and moving dipoles were analyzed. Dipole sources were compared with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to find the exact location of oscillations in brain anatomical structures. A two-level multiple dipole model was found to fit the EEG most adequately. The first level was represented by two oscillators localized in the thalamic reticular nuclei, and the second level is associated with two modality-specific oscillators localized in the respective cortical areas.  相似文献

To confirm the existence of an ongoing electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern that is truly suggestive of pain, tonic heat pain was induced by small heat pulses at 1?°C above the pain threshold and compared to slightly less intense tonic non-painful heat pulses at 1?°C below the pain threshold. Twenty healthy subjects rated the sensation intensity during thermal stimulation. Possible confounding effects of attention were thoroughly controlled for by testing in four conditions: (1) focus of attention directed ipsilateral or (2) contralateral to the side of the stimulation, (3) control without a side preference, and (4) no control of attention at all. EEG was recorded via eight leads according to the 10/20 convention. Absolute power was computed for the frequency bands delta (0.5–4?Hz), theta (4–8?Hz), alpha1 (8–11?Hz), alpha2 (11–14?Hz), beta1 (14–25?Hz), and beta2 (25–35?Hz). Ratings were clearly distinct between the heat and pain conditions and suggestive for heat and pain sensations. Manipulation of attention proved to be successful by producing effects on the ratings and on the EEG activity (with lower ratings and lower EEG activity (theta, beta1, 2) over central areas for side-focused attention). During pain stimulation, lower central alpha1 and alpha2 activity and higher right-parietal and right-occipital delta power were observed compared to heat stimulation. This EEG pattern was not influenced by the manipulation of attention. Since the two types of stimuli (pain, heat) were subjectively felt differently although stimulation intensities were nearby, we conclude that this EEG pattern is clearly suggestive of pain.  相似文献

Continuing evidence suggests that extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF MFs) can affect animal and human behavior. We have previously demonstrated that after a 15 min exposure to a pulsed ELF MF, with most power at frequencies between 0 and 500 Hz, human brain electrical activity is affected as measured by electroencephalography (EEG), specifically within the alpha frequency (8-13 Hz). Here, we report that a pulsed ELF MF affects the human EEG during the exposure period. Twenty subjects (10 males; 10 females) received both a magnetic field and a sham session of 15 min in a counterbalanced design. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that alpha activity was significantly lower over the occipital electrodes (O1, Oz, O2) [F(1,16) = 5.376, P < .01, eta2 = 0.418] after the first 5 min of magnetic field exposure and was found to be related to the order of exposure (MF-sham vs. sham-MF). This decrease in alpha activity was no longer significant in the 1st min post-exposure, compared to sham (P > .05). This study is among the first to assess EEG frequency changes during a weak (+/-200 microTpk), pulsed ELF MF exposure.  相似文献

We studied changes in the frequency pattern of EEG related to a single session of biological feedback by the EEG characteristics (neurofeedback, NFB) directed toward an increase in the ratio of α/θ spectral powers (SPs) (an experimental group; 30 subjects) and to a session of the supposedly indifferent acoustic influence (listening to a musical background; 30 persons). A standard technique of EEG recording was used; the loudness of white noise overlapping the musical background served as an NFB signal. EEG was recorded from the C3 and C4 leads. Within the examined experimental group, an NFB session elicited a trend toward statistically insignificant decreases in the SPs of δ, α, and β rhythms and increases in the SPs of θ and γ EEG components. Listening to a supposedly neutral musical background by the control group, with no attempts at self-control of the SPs of EEG rhythms, was followed by rather clear unidirectional (partially significant) decreases in the SPs of θ, α, β, and γ components; the δ activity in the left hemisphere decreased, while in the right hemisphere it increased. In general, results of the single NFB session were characterized by a high interindividual variability, which can be related mostly to the specificities of psychophysiological characteristics of the personality of the tested subject. Abstract

Background: Many researchers have tried to investigate pain by studying brain responses. One method used to investigate pain-related brain responses is continuous electroencephalography (EEG). The objective of the current study is to add on to our understanding of EEG responses during pain, by differentiation between EEG patterns indicative of (i) the noxious stimulus intensity and (ii) the subjective pain sensation.

Methods: EEG was recorded during the administration of tonic experimental pain, consisting of six minutes of contact heat applied to the leg via a thermode. Two stimuli above pain threshold, one at pain threshold and two non-painful stimuli were administered. Thirty-six healthy participants provided a subjective pain rating during thermal stimulation. Relative EEG power was calculated for the frequency bands alpha1, alpha2, beta1, beta2, delta, and theta.

Results: Whereas EEG activity could not be predicted by stimulus intensity (except in one frequency band), subjective pain sensation could significantly predict differences in EEG activity in several frequency bands. An increase in the subjective pain sensation was associated with a decrease in alpha2, beta1, beta2 as well as in theta activity across the midline electrodes.

Conclusion: The subjective experience of pain seems to capture unique variance in EEG activity above and beyond what is captured by noxious stimulus intensity.  相似文献

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a multiscaled signal consisting of several time-series components each with different dominant frequency ranges and different origins. Nonlinear measures of the EEG reflect the complexity of the overall EEG, but not of each component in it. The aim of this study is to examine effect of the sound and light (SL) stimulation on the complexity of each component of the EEG. We used independent component analysis to obtain independent components of the EEG. The first positive Lyapunov exponent (L1) was estimated as a nonlinear measure of complexity. Twelve subjects were administered photic and auditory stimuli with a frequency of 10 Hz, which corresponded to the alpha frequency of the EEG, by a sound and light entrainment device. We compared the L1 values of the EEGs and their independent components between baseline and after the SL stimulation. We detected that the L1 values of the EEG decreased after the SL stimulation in all channels except C3 and F4, indicating that the complexity of the EEG decreased. We showed that alpha components increased in proportion but decreased in complexity after the SL stimulation. The beta independent components were found to decrease in proportion and complexity. These results suggest that decreased complexity of the EEG after the SL stimulation may be principally caused by decreased complexity and increased proportion of the alpha independent components. We showed also that theta components increased in complexity after the SL stimulation. We propose that nonlinear dynamical analysis combined with independent component analysis may be helpful in understanding the temporal characteristics of the EEG, which cannot be detected by conventional linear or nonlinear methods. Frequency-power spectra of the EEG evoked by repeptitive photic stimulation and of the background EEG were studied during childhood in 43 awake subjects aged between 2 months and 14 years. EEG activity was recorded from the middle parieto-occipital region with the aid of a 1-channel analyzer Lysograf-Alvar, analysing 16 frequencies in the range from 2 to 28 c/sec. The responsiveness of the central nervous system to flickering light improved in the course of childhood in parallel with the significant decline of delta activity and with the prominent increase of alpha intensity in the resting EEG. The 4th month of life appeared to be a marked turning point in the development of evoked and background EEGs. From that age, the bioelectric power at the flash rate corresponding to photic "driving" began to increase together with the highest and optimal driving frequencies. The flash rate, at which evoked potentials changed into the "driven" rhythm, also shifted towards higher frequencies. Subsequently, the amount of energy in the resting EEG increased significantly within the theta, alpha and beta bands and, on the contrary, a prominent decline was observed in the delta range. Marked ontogenetic changes at this age closely coincided with the rapid development of exogenous fibres in the occipital cortex, including the thalamo-cortical conncetions, and fibres of the neuropil in cortical layer I, which might play an important role in the genesis of background and "driven" in the occipital region.  相似文献

We tested whether evening exposure to unilateral photic stimulation has repercussions on interhemispheric EEG asymmetries during wakefulness and later sleep. Because light exerts an alerting response in humans, which correlates with a decrease in waking EEG theta/alpha-activity and a reduction in sleep EEG delta activity, we hypothesized that EEG activity in these frequency bands show interhemispheric asymmetries after unilateral bright light (1,500 lux) exposure. A 2-h hemi-field light exposure acutely suppressed occipital EEG alpha activity in the ipsilateral hemisphere activated by light. Subjects felt more alert during bright light than dim light, an effect that was significantly more pronounced during activation of the right than the left visual cortex. During subsequent sleep, occipital EEG activity in the delta and theta range was significantly reduced after activation of the right visual cortex but not after stimulation of the left visual cortex. Furthermore, hemivisual field light exposure was able to shift the left predominance in occipital spindle EEG activity toward the stimulated hemisphere. Time course analysis revealed that this spindle shift remained significant during the first two sleep cycles. Our results reflect rather a hemispheric asymmetry in the alerting action of light than a use-dependent recovery function of sleep in response to the visual stimulation during prior waking. However, the observed shift in the spindle hemispheric dominance in the occipital cortex may still represent subtle local use-dependent recovery functions during sleep in a frequency range different from the delta range.  相似文献

One of the central problems in the study of brain–computer interface and the processes of operant conditioning is the optimal organization of feedback signals. In this paper we have analyzed the question about comparative efficiency of immediate or 2.56-s delayed presentation of feedback signals as photic stimulation automatically controlled by subject’s electroencephalogram (EEG). Strictly controlled experiments showed a significant increase in EEG power and positive shifts in subjective characteristics only under the minimum feedback delay, i.e., in cases where photic stimuli are controlled directly by the current EEG characteristics of the subjects.  相似文献

Power characteristics of the EEG theta and alpha rhythms were studied in a human in neutral state and during a conditioned negative emotional reaction (Fp1, Fp2, F3, F4, C3, C4, P3, P4, O1, O2, F7, F8, T3, T4, T5, and T6 derivations). A significant increase in the relative spectral power in the narrow theta band of 7.4-8.1 Hz in the frontocentral and temporal brain regions was observed during the development of the negative emotional reaction. The alpha-rhythm dynamics during the negative reaction was substantially individual and could be expressed in either an increase, or decrease in relative spectral power of different alpha-frequencies. No pronounced changes in their dynamics could also be observed. In some subjects the spectral power of the medium-frequency alpha-rhythm significantly decreased, that of the high-frequency rhythm increased, and changes in the spectral power of the low-frequency alpha range varied.  相似文献

The hypotheses tested in this study were that neither average progesterone (P4) concentrations in plasma and milk nor average progesterone metabolites concentrations in faeces would differ during an oestrous cycle in two groups of cows with differing daily milk yields. High producing (HP = 8) and low producing (LP = 8) dairy cows were selected randomly for the study. Their oestrous cycles were initially synchronised using P4 and prostaglandin F2alpha. Chromic oxide capsules were administered twice daily to measure total faecal output. Samples of blood, faeces and milk were taken daily throughout one oestrous cycle, plasma and milk P4, and faecal progesterone metabolites (FP4M) assayed. The average daily milk yields in the two groups were 30.8 and 21.9l per day, respectively (P < 0.0001), although daily faecal output was similar in both the groups (HP, 7.7 versus LP, 6.9 kg DM; P = 0.24). Mean plasma and milk P4 concentrations were similar in both the groups (plasma P4, 4.12 versus 4.05 ng/ml; P = 0.3; milk P4, 8.2 versus 8.3; P = 0.9) during dioestrus. Average daily excretion of P4 to the milk was greater in HP than LP cows (252 versus 185 microg, P = 0.04). Neither concentration nor the daily yield of FP4Ms was affected by level of milk yield (concentration: 12.2 versus 11.5 microg/g; daily yield: 89.1 versus 82.9 mg per day; P > 0.05). These data showed that the concentrations of P4 in plasma and milk, and the concentrations and daily yields of FP4M were not affected by the level of daily milk yields which differed by about 41% of the LP average of 21.9l.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms usually deviate from 24 h and must be synchronized (entrained) to the outer 24 h day by certain environmental periodicities called Zeitgebers. For almost all organisms the most efficient Zeitgeber is the light-dark cycle (LD). In mammals the photic Zeitgeber cues are exclusively received via retinal photoreceptors. It is still in debate whether this circadian photoreception is mediated by rods, cones, and/or other retinal cells. From recent results in mouse mutants a circadian photoreception via non-rod/non-cone retinal receptors was deduced. However, earlier observations in bats indicating a very low threshold for photic entrainment imply that circadian photoreception may be mediated by rod-like receptors. In the present study the threshold for photic entrainment was determined in the neotropical mastiff bat Molossus molossus. Six test animals (3 m, 3 f) were kept isolated in recording cages situated in light-tight and sound-attenuating wooden boxes with a special lighting device on top. Under constant ambient temperature of 25 ± 1°C, relative humidity of 60 ± 5%, and an irregular ad libitum feeding schedule, the bats were exposed intermittantly for longer times to constant physiological darkness (LD-X) or 12:12 h light dark cycles with physiological darkness during the dark time (D) and varying low light-time illuminances (L). Half of the bats had an extremely low threshold for photic entrainment, about 10−5 lux, while the other individuals’ free-running activity rhythm was entrained by LD cycles with 10−4, 10−2 and 10−1 lux in L. The illuminance of only 10−5 lux is the lowest threshold value for photic entrainment found thus far in vertebrates. Plausibility considerations suggest circadian photoreception via rod-like retinal receptors to be most probably involved in this case.  相似文献
