Cortisol (CT) concentrations (in mUg/dl) were determined by radioimmunoassay in plasma obtained at about 3-hr intervals during a 24-hr sampling span from 42 boys and 13 girls of short stature (2–4 standard deviations below their peer group mean), and from a reference group of 11 boys and 10 girls with standard stature, before any treatment were administered to the former. Subjects were 11.20 0.37 years of age at the time of study, and were living on a diurnal waking (~07:30 to ~22:30), nocturnal resting routine during sampling, consuming the usual hospital diet. Circadian rhythm parameters were computed separately for each group by the single and population-mean cosinor Tits of a 24-hr cosine curve. A comparison of circadian parameters indicates a statistically significant difference in acrophase (>P =0.033) between short and standard children, as well as added differences in rhythm-adjusted mean (M; P=0.011) and (P =0.035) between boys and girls of short stature. These differences, as well as any other added information from relevant marker rhythms, should be taken into account for the time-specification of therapy before treatment starts in children of short stature.  相似文献

The period (∼3-5 min) of the ultradian rhythm of the lateral leaflet movement of Desmodium motorium is strongly lengthened (≤30-40%) by the K+ channel blocker tetraethylammoniumchloride (20, 30, and 40 mM) and vanadate (0.5 and 1 mM), which is an effective inhibitor of the plasma membrane-bound H+ pump. The alkali ions K+, Na+, Rb+, and Cs+ (10-40 mM) shorten the period only slightly (≤ 10-15%). Li+ (5-30 mM), however, increases the period of the leaflet rhythm drastically (≤80%). We concluded that the plasmalemma-H+-ATP-ase-driven K+ transport through K+ channels is an essential component of the ultradian oscillator of Desmodium, as has been proposed for the circadian oscillator.  相似文献

The circadian variations in plasma progesterone (P) and LH concentrations were investigated in six women, aged 23-40 years. All were studied in the mid-luteal phase (7 +/- 2 days after LH mid-cycle surge). Experiments were conducted in autumn and in spring. Blood samples were obtained every 15 min for 24 hr. Plasma P and LH concentrations were measured by RIA. Each subject's time-series was analysed using three methods; visual inspection (chronogram), spectral analysis to estimate component periods of rhythms (tau) and cosinor analysis to quantify the rhythms parameters. Marked temporal variations in plasma P concentration were observed in each subject. The maximal variations over a 24-hr period, ranged between 13-58.5 mmol/l. Differences related to sampling time were statistically validated by ANOVA (p less than 0.00001). Significant harmonic periods were detected by spectral analysis but differed among subjects. In all subjects but one, a circadian rhythm was detected. The acrophase location was similar (about 0700 hr) in the four subjects studied in autumn, but ranged from 1940 to 0320 hr in those studied in spring. An ultradian rhythm with tau = 8 hr was also validated in six time-series with similar acrophases (about 0200, 1000, and 1800 hr). Cosinor analysis of pooled data revealed that the 24-hr, 12-hr, and 8-hr rhythms were statistically significant (p = 0.001) in autumn. algebraic sum of these three cosine functions yielded a circadian waveform with peak-times occurring near 0300 and 1130 hr and a trough-time about 2200 hr. In spring, the circadian pattern appeared quite different, and peak-times were found near 0700 and 2000 hr, and trough-times near 0300 and 1500 hr. Furthermore, the 24-hr mean of P was higher in autumn (28.9 +/- 0.4 nmol/l) than in spring (17.2 +/- 0.4 nmol/l), p from ANOVA less than 0.00001. The evidence for a similar circadian LH pattern is not as strong. Seasonal, circadian and ultradian rhythms characterize the physiologic time structure of plasma P concentration in mid-luteal phase.  相似文献

Three types of rhythmic movements of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (pole beans) were examined collectively and their characteristics compared. Although the ultradian rhythms of shoot circumnutation and leaf movement, as well as the circadian rhythm of leaf movement, occurred simultaneously, each rhythm could be expressed independently of the other two. Shoot circumnutation and ultradian leaf movements displayed the same period (80 min at 25°C and Q10⋍2), while the period of the circadian leaf movements was not temperature dependent (Q10⋍1). Interaction into the plant between two ultradian rhythms (shoot circumnutation and ultradian leaf movement) with the same period and coexistence in the pulvinus of an ultradian with a circadian rhythm are discussed.  相似文献

Sex differences in children's toy preferences are thought by many to arise from gender socialization. However, evidence from patients with endocrine disorders suggests that biological factors during early development (e.g., levels of androgens) are influential. In this study, we found that vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) show sex differences in toy preferences similar to those documented previously in children. The percent of contact time with toys typically preferred by boys (a car and a ball) was greater in male vervets (n=33) than in female vervets (n=30) (P<.05), whereas the percent of contact time with toys typically preferred by girls (a doll and a pot) was greater in female vervets than in male vervets (P<.01). In contrast, contact time with toys preferred equally by boys and girls (a picture book and a stuffed dog) was comparable in male and female vervets. The results suggest that sexually differentiated object preferences arose early in human evolution, prior to the emergence of a distinct hominid lineage. This implies that sexually dimorphic preferences for features (e.g., color, shape, movement) may have evolved from differential selection pressures based on the different behavioral roles of males and females, and that evolved object feature preferences may contribute to present day sexually dimorphic toy preferences in children.  相似文献

This study examines patterns of growth and nutritional status of indigenous Tsimane' children under 9 years of age (n = 199 boys and 210 girls), based on a cross-sectional sample from 58 villages from the Beni Deparment of lowland Bolivia. Compared with US children, Tsimane' children are quite short, with linear growth tracking at or below the US 5th centile in both sexes. Thiosulfate sulfurtransferase (TST) is an important 'enzyme of protection,' that accelerates the detoxification of cyanide, converting it into thiocyanate. The TST physiological rhythm was investigated at wks 2, 4, and 8 of post-natal development (PND) in the mouse. The results revealed a statistically significant gender-related difference, with the highest activity in females, at all the documented PND stages. In the second week of PND (pre-weaning time), the circadian rhythm of the enzyme activity was associated with ultradian components. The prominent circadian rhythm (τ=24 h) peaked at the beginning of the light span, more precisely ∼3 HALO (Hours After Light Onset). A week after weaning (wk 4 of PND), an impairment of the rhythm, with the peak shifted toward the second half of photophase, was recorded. Four to 6 wks later, about wk 8 of PND, the circadian rhythm pattern was stabilized, with its peak then located at the beginning of the dark span (13 HALO). The obtained results showed a 12 h phase-shift of the circadian TST peak time during PND, suggesting that the rhythm stabilization is age-dependent.  相似文献

目前有关儿童青少年坐高、下肢长及其比值的报道多为非双生子人群的研究。为了解遗传和环境因素对儿童青少年坐高、下肢长及坐高与下肢长比值影响的相对大小,我们对796对6~18岁双生子的身高和坐高进行了测量,计算下肢长及坐高与下肢长比值,采用结构方程模型分析其遗传和环境相对效应。结果发现,校正年龄后,男女15~18岁年龄组坐高和下肢长的遗传度(0.63~0.78)均分别高于同性别低年龄段儿童青少年(0.31~0.68);坐高与下肢长比值的遗传度除9~11岁女生(0.84)外,其他年龄组均较低(男0.16~0.46,女0.21~0.57);共同环境因素和特殊环境因素对6~14岁儿童青少年各指标的作用较大。本研究提示,在快速发育时期,坐高、下肢长和坐高与下肢长比值对环境因素更为敏感,遗传度较低;机体越成熟,其遗传效应更强。  相似文献

Thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) plasma concentrations have been determined during 24-hr sampling periods in six mongrels (age 12-36 months), six beagles (age 35-37 months), three labradors (age 3.5 months) and three beagles (age 5 months). The mean T4 levels of the labradors were significantly lower than the values found for mongrels or older beagles (P < 0.05), whereas T3 was higher in the 5 month old beagles compared to the mongrels (P < 0.001), young beagles (P < 0.05) or labradors (P < 0.01).

Circadian and ultradian rhythmicities have been evaluated by cosinor and Fourier analysis. Mongrels and older beagles did have a 12-hr rhythmicity in plasma T4 (P < 0.05), whereas 5 month old beagles had a circadian one (P < 0.01). A 12-hr rhythmicity was also found for T3 in the older Beagles (P < 0.05). However, Fourier analysis indicated that the daily variation in T4 and T3 plasma levels was inadequately mathematically described by single sinusoidal rhythm and that more harmonic components are to be taken into account.

The obtained data during a 24-hr period indicate that T4 and T3 concentrations in plasma may vary according to breed, age and sampling hour.  相似文献

Six Finnish wethers (average weight, 52.3 kg) were used to determine the effectiveness of a controlled-release Cr2O3 bolus and the internal marker acid insoluble ash (AIA) for predicting fecal output. Wethers were fed grass silage for ad libitum intake. Each wether was dosed orally with one continuous-release Cr2O3 bolus (CRC) on the first day of the experiment. Chronology of the trial was as follows: Day 0 to 14, marker adaptation period; Day 15 to 21, total fecal collection; Day 22 to 23, fecal grab sampling every 4 h; Day 25 to 35, once-daily fecal grab sampling. Accuracy of marker-estimated fecal output derived from each method was compared within a marker with total fecal collection values using a paired t-test. Concentrations of AIA and Cr varied (P < 0.10) between sampling times. Accuracy of fecal output estimates was better with the controlled-release Cr2O3 bolus (r = 0.97; P = 0.03) than with AIA (r = −0.08; P = 0.89). Grab samples taken once produced reliable (r = 0.96; P = 0.02) estimates of fecal output of silage-fed wethers using the controlled-release Cr2O3 bolus. The controlled-release Cr2O3 bolus is a better marker than acid-insoluble ash for predicting fecal output of silage-fed wethers.  相似文献

Systolic (S) and diastolic (D) blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) of clinically healthy children (24 boys and 15 girls) 3 to 7 years of age were measured with a standard mercury sphygmomanometer at 3-hour intervals for 24 hours in April 1991. The children slept and/or rested from 2100 to 0700 and napped from 1230 to 1530; they had meals at 0730, 1200 and 1800. A statistically significant circadian and about 12-hour (circasemidian) component of variation is documented for SBP and DBP of boys and girls and for HR of boys. No gender difference was found for the circadian and circasemidian components. A positive correlation with age is found for the MESOR and circadian amplitude of SBP and DBP (p < 0.05); a negative correlation with age is found for the MESOR of HR (p < 0.001).  相似文献

Plasma levels of copper and lipid peroxidation were evaluated in 14 smokers as compared to 14 nonsmokers. Plasma copper concentrations were higher in smokers than in nonsmokers (122.5 ± 19.15 vs. 101.5 ± 16.2 μg/dl, P < .01). Plasma lipoperoxidation, evaluated as fluorescent damage products of lipid peroxidation (FDPL), also was higher in smokers than in nonsmokers (20.35 ± 2.6 vs. 17.1 ± 2.95 units of relative fluorescence/ml, P < .01). A significant and positive correlation between the number of cigarettes smoked, expressed as pack years, and the levels of either FDPL (r = .61, P < .025) or copper (r = .55, P < .05) was found. Moreover, a significant and positive relationship between copper and FDPL values was observed in smokers (r = .64; P < .025), but not in nonsmokers. These data indicate that cigarette smoke-related plasma oxidant load may be partly due to enhanced levels of the prooxidant metal copper, potentially suggesting the supplementation of specific antioxidants (e.g., zinc) to counteract cigarette smoke-induced oxidative stress in smokers.  相似文献

The possibility that the 24h rhythm output is the composite expression of ultradian oscillators of varying periodicities was examined by assessing the effect of external continuously or pulsed (20-minute) Gonadotropinreleasing hormone (GnRH) infusions on in vitro luteinizing hormone (LH) release patterns from female mouse pituitaries during 38h study spans. Applying stepwise analyses (spectral, cosine fit, best-fit curve, and peak detection analyses) revealed the waveform shape of LH release output patterns over time is composed of several ultradian oscillations of different periods. The results further substantiated previous observations indicating the pituitary functions as an autonomous clock. The GnRH oscillator functions as a pulse generator and amplitude regulator, but it is not the oscillator that drives the ultradian LH release rhythms. At different stages of the estrus cycle, the effect of GnRH on the expression of ultradian periodicities varies, resulting in the modification of their amplitudes but not their periods. The functional output from the system of ultradian oscillators may superimpose a “circadian or infradian phenotype” on the observed secretion pattern. An “amplitude control” hypothesis is proposed: The temporal pattern of LH release is governed by several oscillators that function in conjunction with one another and are regulated by an amplitude-controlled mechanism. Simulated models show that such a mechanism results in better adaptive response to environmental requirements than does a single circadian oscillator. Core temperature was telemetered from 26 singly-housed adult male inbred Fischer rats standardized in an ambient temperature of 24 ± 1°C, in light from 0600–1800 alternating with darkness (L:D 12:12), with food and water freely available. The rats were operated upon first for bilateral electrolytic lesioning of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) or by a sham-operation, which consisted of an inserted electrode which neither penetrated into the SCN area nor was activated to produce a lesion. Next, a temperature sensor was implanted intraperitoneally. The telemetered data obtained at 10-min intervals from each rat were analyzed by the least-squares fit of certain trial periods (cosinor methods). A circadian population rhythm persisted in the SCN-lesioned rats which sustained destruction of both SCN (P < 0.01). The amplitude of the circadian temperature rhythm was attenuated(P < 0.01) and the rhythm's acrophase advanced (P < 0.05) from mid-dark to a time near the transition from light to darkness. Unilateral lesions of the suprachiasmatic nuclei altered the circadain amplitude but not the phasing.  相似文献

Chronic renal failure (CRF) in the young is complicated by, among other conditions, growth retardation, hyperparathyroidism and uremic osteodystrophy. Many children with CRF are now being treated with growth hormone (GH). Since GH has a direct mitogenic effect on osteoblasts in culture, we studied the effects of GH therapy on osteoblastic activity, such as serum alkaline phosphatase (AP), bone GLA-protein (BGP) and bone mass density (BMD) in poorly growing children with and without CRF. Fifteen (4 girls, 11 boys) healthy children with short stature (SS) and 10 (3 girls, 7 boys) children with end-stage renal failure (CRF) 4.5-12.4 years of age were treated with daily subcutaneous injections of GH in a dose of 0.1-0.125 IU/kg/day for 1 year. IGF-I, BGP and BMD of the spine were determined before and after the year of treatment. During GH therapy, a similar increase in height velocity and IGF-I were noted in SS and CRF groups: 3.8 +/- 0.77 to 8.38 +/- 1.25 (p < 0.001) vs. 4.0 +/- 0.6 to 7.14 +/- 1.3 cm/year (p < 0.001) and 7.8 +/- 2.6 to 21.8 +/- 7.5 (p < 0.01) vs. 7.9 +/- 1.3 to 21.5 +/- 5.6 nmol/l (p < 0.01), respectively. We have investigated the role of steroid hormones as coronary risk factors in Helsinki Heart Study population of dyslipidemic middle-aged men. We compare here the effects of gemfibrozil and placebo on the serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), its sulfate (DHEAS), their metabolite androstanediol glucuronide (3-AdiolG), androstenedione, cortisol, testosterone, and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in non-smokers. We also examined the associations between steroid and lipoprotein levels in both treatment groups. Compared with placebo gemfibrozil treatment was associated with significant elevations of the mean levels of DHEA 10.2 vs 8.0 nmol/1; P<0.005, of DHEAS 8.0 vs 5.8 μmol/1; P<0.001, of 3AdiolG 18.3 vs 8.4 nmol/1; P<0.001, of androstenedione 5.7 vs 5.1 nmol/1; P<0.02, and of cortisol 426 vs 358 nmol/1; P<0.001. The mean SHBG levels decreased from 46.4 to 41.7 nmol/1; P=0.03 with gemfibrozil treatment. No difference was found in testosterone levels 17.7 vs 18.8 nmol/1; P=0.11, or the ratio of testosterone/SHBG 0.45 vs 0.43; P=0.23. Positive correlations were found between high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and DHEAS (r=0.267; P<0.01) and DHEA (r=0.282; P<0.01) levels and negative correlations between low density lipoprotein-cholesterol and 3-AdiolG (r=−0.400; P<0.001) and cortisol (r=−0.281; P<0.01) levels in the gemfibozil group. Our results indicate that gemfibrozil treatment increases the production and turnover of adrenal androgens and cortisol, and suggest that activation of the adrenocorticol function and increased metabolism of androgens are related to the improved lipoprotein pattern during gemfibrozil treatment.  相似文献

This study has been undertaken to determine the effect of a diet enriched with olive oil (OO) and high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSO) on fatty acid composition of erythrocyte membrane phospholipids and blood pressure in healthy women. OO and HOSO were used as natural sources of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) in a random-order sequence over two 4-week periods with a 4-week washout period between both MUFA diets. HOSO diet resulted in significant increases in oleic [(18:1n-9) 8.6%, P < 0.001], eicosenoic [(20:1n-9) 33.3%, P < 0.05], arachidonic [(20:4n-6) 6.2%, P < 0.05], and docosapentaenoic [(22:5n-6) 56.0%, P < 0.001] acids, whereas OO diet besides increased the content of stearic acid [(18:0) 13.6%, P < 0.01] and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of the n-3 family (22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3), when compared with the baseline [a diet high in saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and low in MUFAs]. In contrast, there was a significant decrease in linoleic acid [(18:2n-6) 21.8%, P < 0.001] for both MUFA diets. Consistent with these data, dietary intake of OO significantly raised total PUFAs (7.2%, P < 0.05), the n-3 fatty acids (22.2%, P < 0.01) and the PUFAs/SFAs ratio (9.3%, P < 0.01), as well as decreased the ratio of cholesterol to phospholipids (26,1%, P < 0.001) versus HOSO-based diet. Interestingly, dietary OO, but not HOSO, was able to significantly reduce the systolic (3%, P < 0.05) and diastolic (4%, P < 0.05) blood pressures. Although both vegetable oils provided a similar content of MUFAs (mainly oleic acid), our findings rather indicate that OO has important benefits to modulate the fatty acid composition of membranes and the mechanisms involved in the regulation of blood pressure in human.  相似文献
