Monoterpenoids and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons of Abies balsamea cortical oleoresin (Canada balsam) were analyzed by a combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Monoterpene hydrocarbons (21%) were composed of β-pinene, α-pinene, β-phellandrene, limonene, 3-carene, myrcene and camphene (listed in order of decreasing percentages), and oxygenated monoterpenes (0·4%) contained 4,4-dimethyl-2-cyclohepten-1-one, linalool, bornyl acetate, methylthymol, citronellyl acetate, α-terpineol, piperitone, citronellal, borneol, citronellol, two unknowns, and geraniol. From the sesquiterpene hydrocarbon fraction (1·1%) were isolated: longifolene, β-bisabolene, longipinene, an unknown, sativene, cyclosativene, cis-α-bisabolene, β-himachalene, α-himachalene, β-caryophyllene, γ-humulene, farnesene, longicyclene, an unknown, and β-selinene. Both himachalenes have been identified for the first time in Pinaceae outside of Cedrus; their co-occurrence with γ-humulene, longifolene, longipinene and longicyclene supports the biosynthetic mechanism by which all of these compounds arise through initial 1/11 cyclization of tran-cis-farnesylphosphate.

Leaves of seven species of the genus Eucalyptus L'Hér., viz., E. cladocalyx F. Muell., E. citriodora Hook., E. diversicolor F. Muell., E. fasciculosa F. Muell., E. grandis W. Hill, E. ovata Labill., and E. botryoides Sm., were harvested from Zerniza arboreta (region of Sejnene, northwest of Tunisia) in June 2007. Of the latter species, leaves were collected from trees having two origins, Morocco and Italy. Hydrodistillation of the dried leaves provided essential oils in yields varying from 0.4±0.0 to 3.3±0.1%, according to the species. E. citriodora had the highest mean percentage of essential oil amongst the species examined, whereas the lowest one was obtained for E. botryoides originating from Morocco. Analysis by GC (RI) and GC/MS allowed the identification of 140 compounds, representing 92.5 to 99.4% of the total oil composition. The contents of the different samples varied according to the species. The main components were 1,8-cineole (2), followed by α-pinene (1), p-cymene, borneol, α-terpineol, cryptone, spathulenol, trans-pinocarveol (4), bicyclogermacrene (5), caryophyllene oxide, and β-phellandrene. Principal components analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis separated the eight Eucalyptus leaf essential oils into five groups, each constituting a chemotype.

The chemical composition, phytotoxic and antifungal activities of the essential oils isolated by hydrodistillation from the needles of Tunisian Aleppo pine harvested from different provenances were evaluated. The chemical composition analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) revealed variability among provenances displaying interesting chemotypes, (Z)-caryophyllene (16.16–28.9%), β-myrcene (8.5–22.9%), α-pinene (11.7–13.14%), β-pinene (3.13–11.8%), bicyclogermacrene (5.2–12.37%), α-terpinolene (8.11–11.01%) and α-humulene (2.85–5.2%), which were the main components in the oil. Antifungal ability of Aleppo pine oils was tested by disc agar diffusion against 10 phytopathogenic fungi. Weak antifungal activity was observed for the essential oils isolated. Furthermore, in contrast, the herbicidal activity investigated for three common weeds in Tunisian cereal crops was very strong and seed germination was inhibited at a low concentration and their herbicidal effects were higher than those of a commercial herbicide.

The chemical composition and the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil isolated from the needles of endemic Dalmatian black pine (Pinus nigra ssp. dalmatica) from Croatia were investigated. The chemical composition of the essential oil was determined by GC and GC/MS analyses, and the main compounds identified were α-pinene, β-pinene, germacrene D, and β-caryophyllene. Disc-diffusion and broth-microdilution assays were used for the in vitro antimicrobial screening. The Dalmatian black pine essential oil exhibited a great potential of antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (MIC=0.03-0.50% (v/v)) and a less pronounced activity against Gram-negative bacteria (MIC=0.12-3.2% (v/v)). The volatile compounds also inhibited the growth of all fungi tested, including yeast.

The chemical composition and the in vitro schistosomicidal effects of the essential oil of Plectranthus neochilus (PN-EO) grown in Southeast Brazil was studied. β-Caryophyllene (1; 28.23%), α-thujene (2; 12.22%), α-pinene (3; 12.63%), β-pinene (4; 6.19%), germacrene D (5; 5.36%), and caryophyllene oxide (6; 5.37%) were the major essential oil constituents. This chemical composition differed from that previously reported for specimens harvested in Africa. Concerning the in vitro schistosomicidal activity against adult Schistosoma mansoni worms, PN-EO was considered to be active, but less effective than the positive control praziquantel (PZQ) in terms of separation of coupled pairs, mortality, decrease in the motor activity, and tegumental alterations. However, PN-EO caused an interesting dose-dependent reduction in the number and the percentage of developed S. mansoni eggs. These results suggest that PN-EO might be very promising for the development of new schistosomicidal agents.

Citrus aurantium L. var. amara Engl., is a better species of sour oranges. There are essential oils in the flowers, the peels, the leaves and the branches of C. aurantium. The flower oil can be used in the preparation of perfumes of high quality. The peel oil is used mainly for the flavor-endowing of soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, bread, confectionaries and cakes. In order to control the quality of the essential oils and to improve them, we have systema- tically studied the chemical constituents of the flowers, the leaves and the peals of C. aurantium with our preparation. 12 main components were separated by silica gel column chromatography. The following 33 chemical components were identified by IR, GC-MS and GC retention index: α-thujene, α-pinene, camphene, β-pinene, myrcene, limonene, β-ocimene, trans-linalooloxide (furanoid), cis-linalooloxide (furanoid), linalool, 1,4-p-methadien-7-ol, trans-pinocarveol, camphor, terpinen-4-ol α-terpineol, nerol, citral-b, geraniol, linalylacetate, citrala, trans-linalooloxide (pyranoid), methyl anthranilate, terpinyl acetate, cis-linalooloxide (pyranoid), neryl acetate. geranyl acetate, nonanal, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, γ-muurolene, β-nerolidol, farnesol, α- nerolidol. GC retention index of 33 compounds were measured. A fast method for routine determination is presented.

The composition of the essential oils of Lomatium dasycarpum ssp. dasycarpum, Lomatium lucidum, Lomatium macrocarpum var. macrocarpum and Lomatium utriculatum is described. Identification of components was determined from their GC, GC/MS data and many were confirmed by coinjections with authentic samples. Several components were isolated by liquid and gas chromatographic techniques and their structures confirmed from their 1H and 13C NMR spectral data. 2-Methyl and 3-methylbutanoates were the major components of L. dasycarpum fruits as well as stems and leaves oils. β-Phellandrene/limonene, decanal, dodecanal, bornyl acetate, germacrene D, α-humulene and bicyclogermacrene were the major components of the corresponding L. lucidum oils. α-Pinene and β-pinene were the major components of the fruit oil of L. macrocarpum. Its stem and leaf oil was rich in peucenin 7-methyl ether, β-caryophyllene, (Z)-3-hexenol, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and (E)-2-hexenal. Sabinene, (Z)-ligustilide, terpinen-4-ol, β-phellandrene/limonene, β-caryophyllene, myrcene, α-pinene and β-pinene were the major compounds in L. utriculatum fruit oil, while its stem and leaf oil was rich in (Z)-ligustilide, palmitic acid, terpinen-4-ol, linoleic acid and germacrene D. (Z)-Falcarinol was a major component of all the four root oils.

The chemical composition of 48 leaf oil samples isolated from individual plants of Cleistopholis patens (Benth .) Engl. et Diels harvested in four Ivoirian forests was investigated by GC‐FID (determination of retention indices), GC/MS, and 13C‐NMR analyses. The main components identified were β‐pinene (traces–59.1%), sabinene (traces–54.2%), (E)‐β‐caryophyllene (0.3–39.3%), linalool (0.1–38.5%), (E)‐β‐ocimene (0.1–33.2%), germacrene D (0.0–33.1%), α‐pinene (0.1–32.3%), and germacrene B (0–21.2%). The 48 oil compositions were submitted to hierarchical clustering and principal components analyses, which allowed the distinction of three groups within the oil samples. The oil composition of the major group (Group I, 33 samples) was dominated by (E)‐β‐caryophyllene and linalool. The oils of Group II (eight samples) contained mainly β‐pinene and α‐pinene, while those of Group III (seven samples) were dominated by sabinene, limonene, and β‐phellandrene. Moreover, the compositions of the Ivoirian C. patens leaf oils differed from those of Nigerian and Cameroonian origins.

Abstract

The present study evaluated the influence of some environmental factors on the quantity and composition of essential oil (EO) in ripe berry cones of Juniperus communis L. The berry cones were collected from juniper shrubs growing wild at five localities of north-east Slovakia during the years 2012–2014. The EO yield ranged from 0.4 to 1.9%, depending on the locality and year. In the EO, eight monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, β-myrcene, sabinene, limonene, terpinene-4-ol, borneol, bornylacetate) and one sesquiterpene (β-caryophyllene) were identified. The dominant component was the monoterpene α-pinene, ranging from 31.0 to 49.0%. The amount and composition of the EO was affected by soil composition (content of humus and pH) and topographic environmental factors, including air temperature and precipitation. According to the composition of the EO, the studied juniper shrubs belong to the α-pinene chemotype.

The characteristic aroma compounds of Citrus natsudaidai Hayata essential oil were evaluated by a combination of instrumental and sensory methods. Sixty compounds were identified and quantified, accounting for 94.08% of the total peel oil constituents. Limonene was the most abundant compound (80.68%), followed by γ-terpinene (5.30%), myrcene (2.25%) and α-pinene (1.30%). Nineteen compounds which could not be identified in the original oil were identified in the oxygenated fraction. Myrcene, linalool, α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, nonanal, γ-terpinene, germacrene D, and perillyl alcohol were the active aroma components (FD-factor > 36), whereas β-copaene, cis-sabinene hydrate and 1-octanol were suggested as characteristic aroma compounds, having a Natsudaidai-like aroma in the GC effluent. Three other compounds, heptyl acetate, (E)-limonene oxide and 2,3-butanediol, which each showed a high RFA value (>35) were considered to be important in the reconstruction of the original Natsudaidai oil from pure odor chemicals. The results indicate that 1-octanol was the aroma impact compound of C. natsudaidai Hayata peel oil.

The chemical composition of 48 essential‐oil samples isolated from the leaves of Xylopia aethiopica harvested in six Ivoirian forests was investigated by GC‐FID and 13C‐NMR analyses. In total, 23 components accounting for 82.5–96.1% of the oil composition were identified. The composition was dominated by the monoterpene hydrocarbons β‐pinene (up to 61.1%) and α‐pinene (up to 18.6%) and the sesquiterpene hydrocarbon germacrene D (up to 28.7%). Hierarchical cluster and principal component analyses allowed the distinction of two groups on the basis of the β‐pinene and germacrene D contents. The chemical composition of the oils of Group I (38 oil samples) was clearly dominated by β‐pinene, while those of Group II (10 samples) were characterized by the association of β‐pinene and germacrene D. The leaves collected in the four inland forests produced β‐pinene‐rich oils (Group I), while the oil samples belonging to Group II were isolated from leaves harvested in forests located near the littoral.

Cladanthus scariosus (Ball) Oberpr. & Vogt is endemic to Moroccan High Atlas. It is known under the vernacular names Irezghi or Irezgui. Three essential oil samples have been isolated from aerial parts and analyzed by combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques [gas chromatography (GC) in combination with retention indices (RI), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and 13C-NMR spectroscopy]. The compositions of oil samples were dominated by monoterpenes: α-pinene sabinene, and terpinen-4-ol. Chamazulene and dihydrochamazulene isomers as well as various hemiterpene esters and analogs have been identified. To evidence a chemical variability, statistical analysis performed on 13 oil sample compositions allowed partitioning into three groups, mainly differentiated by their contents of sabinene, camphor, borneol, terpinen-4-ol, and germacrene D.

During our screening program for agrochemicals from Chinese medicinal herbs and wild plants, the essential oil of Litsea cubeba fruits was found to possess strong contact toxicity against the cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne adults and the booklouse Liposcelis bostrychophila, with LD50 values of 27.33 μg/adult and 71.56 μg/cm2, respectively, and also showed strong fumigant toxicity against the two stored product insects with LC50 values of 22.97 and 0.73 mg/L, respectively. The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation was investigated by GC MS. The main components of the essential oil were identified to be E-citral (geranial) (27.49%), Z-citral (neral) (23.57%) and d-limonene (18.82%) followed by β-thujene (3.34%), β-pinene (2.85%), α-pinene (2.57%), 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (2.40%) and linalool (2.36%). Citral (Z/E-citral), d-limonene, β-pinene, α-pinene and linalool were separated and purified by silica gel column chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography, and further identified by means of physicochemical and spectrometric analysis. Citral and linalool showed strong contact toxicity against L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila (LD50 = 11.76, 12.74 μg/adult and 20.15, 99.97 μg/cm2, respectively) and fumigant toxicity against L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila (16.54, 18.04 mg/L air and 0.14, 0.71 mg/L air, respectively). Otherwise, citral, d-limonene and linalool were strongly repellent against the cigarette beetle L. serricorne as the essential oil whereas β-pinene and α-pinene exhibited weaker repellency against the cigarette beetle compared with the positive control, DEET. Moreover, except α-pinene and linalool, the other three compounds as well as the essential oil exhibited comparable repellency against the booklouse relative to DEET.

The aim of current work was to determine essential oils (EOs) composition from three Eucalyptus species, including E. citriodora, E. camaldulensis and E. globulus and assess their α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The EOs were collected using the hydrodistillation technique and characterized by GC/MS, GC-FID and NMR. The isolated EOs from leaves parts of Eucalyptus species varied from 0.56 to 1.0 % on fresh weight basis. The content of the EOs was distinct according to the species. The most abundant metabolites were identified as citronellal (0–83.0 %), 1,8-cineole (0.2–44.8 %), spathulenol (0.4–16.1 %) α-pinene (0.4–15.9 %), p-cymene (3.7–11.9 %), citronellol (0–8.6 %), β-eudesmol (5.3–8.6 %) and β-pinene (0–7.1 %). The EOs obtained from targeted samples exhibited strong α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. These results are encouraging and underline that the EOs of Eucalyptus species may be a promising alternative source of natural antidiabetic.

Essential oils were obtained by separate hydrodistillation of three different plants cultivated in Nigeria and analysed comprehensively for their constituents by means of gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The leaf essential oil of Casuarina equisetifolia L. (Casuarinaceae) comprised mainly of pentadecanal (32.0%) and 1,8-cineole (13.1%), with significant amounts of apiole (7.2%), α-phellandrene (7.0%) and α-terpinene (6.9%), while the fruit oil was dominated by caryophyllene-oxide (11.7%), trans-linalool oxide (11.5%), 1,8-cineole (9.7%), α-terpineol (8.8%) and α-pinene (8.5%). On the other hand, 1,8-cineole (39.4%) and α-terpinyl acetate (10.7%) occurred in large quantities in the essential oils of the leaf of Eucalyptus toreliana L. (Myrtaceae). The oil also features high levels of sabinene (5.9%), caryophyllene-oxide (4.7%) and α-pinene (4.2%). The main compounds identified in the leaf oil of Ficus elastica Roxb. ex Hornem. (Moraceae) were 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone (25.9%), geranyl acetone (9.9%), heneicosene (8.4%) and 1,8-cineole (8.2%).

Leaf oil samples of four Japanese citrus species were analysed by gas chromatography to determine the detailed composition of each leaf oil. The following components were identified: α-pinene, α-thujene, camphene, β-pinene, sabinene, β-myrcene, α-terpinene, limonene, β-phellandrene, trans-2-hexen-1-al, γ-terpinene, p-cymene, terpinolene, cis-2-penten-1-ol, n-hexyl alcohol, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, trans-2-hexen-1-ol, p-α-dimethylstyrene linalool, linalyl acetate, β-elemene, terpinen-4-ol, caryophyllene, humulene, α-terpineol, neryl acetate, geranyl acetate, β-selinene, geraniol and thymol. Most components were contained in common in leaf oils of the four citrus species, but relative contents of some of the components; such as γ-terpinene, linalyl acetate, and thymol differed from species to species. For example, γ-terpinene was the major component (33.8%) of Hassaku, whereas it was only a minor component in Daidai. Daidai is characterized by a very high content of linalyl acetate (35%) which is only a trace in the other three species. Kishu-mikan is characterized by a high content of thymol (15%).
