Abstract:  The exceptionally preserved hyolithids Gompholites striatulus , Maxilites robustus , Maxilites snajdri and Maxilites sp. are described with particular emphasis on helen and muscle scar morphology. These two aspects of hyolithid morphology have remained controversial. In life position, each helen curved ventrally. When the operculum closed the aperture of the conch, each helen was locked at the commissure slit with its dorsal edge tilted forward. Inside the conch, it was held in the dorsal apertural plane and clear of the inner surface of the operculum. Previously unidentified muscle scars are described from both the operculum and the conch. Dorsal scars on the conch aperture held muscles directed to the operculum. Comparative study of the muscle insertion pattern indicates that hyolithids did not have serially arranged muscles and that all hyolithids may have had a common skeleto-muscular system. The arrangement of the muscle scars with respect to the helens suggests that the latter were capable of relatively complex movements and could have been used to propel the organism over the substrate. The general morphology and orientation of the helens suggests that in addition they functioned to stabilize the organism on the sea-floor.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Re-examination of type specimens of Early Cambrian and early Mid Cambrian hyoliths from Sweden confirms placement of Hyolithes teretiusculus Linnarsson in Hexitheca Syssoiev, and reassignment to the order Hyolithida rather than Orthothecida. Inclusion of Hyolithes affinis Holm within Decoritheca Syssoiev is re-confirmed, and Hyolithes socialis Linnarsson is now referred to Nevadotheca Malinky and Slapylites Marek. An operculum included under Hyolithes oelandicus Holm is transferred provisionally to Maxilites Marek, and conchs of that species are placed under Tulenicornus Val'kov with question. No other hyolith species of Holm can be definitely assigned to genus. The rarity of well preserved opercula is a major impediment to recognizing hyolith taxa confidently, and we follow Holm in attributing the comparative rarity of opercula to the fact that in some hyolith taxa the operculum may have been composed of a different, and perhaps less stable, material than the rest of the conch.  相似文献

Hyoliths are usually preserved as isolated skeletal elements consisting of conch, operculum, and helens. The occurrence of a conch associated with an operculum is ordinarily exceptional, and the co-occurrence of helens with other skeletal parts is a great rarity. The extraordinary finds of hyolithid conchs associated with opercula in situ are relatively abundant in the Cambrian and Ordovician clastic sediments of the Barrandian area in the Czech Republic. The platyclaviculate operculum with clavicles divided by longitudinal walls into channels characterizes members of the newly established family Slapylitidae fam. nov., which includes two genera: Slapylites Marek, 1980 known from the mid-Cambrian of West Gondwana and Baltica and Nevadalites Marek, 1976 documented from the Late Cambrian of Laurentia. To this family most probably belongs also an operculum from the Cambrian Series 2–Series 3 boundary of North Greenland and poorly known material from the Middle Devonian of Bolivia.  相似文献

The vitelline body in the mature oocyte of the spider Tegenaria parietina is composed of 4 different zones. 1. The central zone contains granular areas, vesicles, and a few lamellae. 2. The lamellar zone consists of numerous concentric lamellae. These sheets, 45 A in thickness, are stacked in groups. The fine structure and the regular arrangement recall those of myelin sheets, retinal rods, and chloroplasts. Between the stacks of lamellae, finely granular masses and various vesicles are to be found. 3. The "zone of transition" consists of a finely granular substance accumulated in abundant masses. This substance is composed of very closely packed granules about 50 to 60 A in diameter. Very often, near the lamellae, the granules show alignment giving a gradual transition from grains to lamellae. 4. The vesicular zone contains ergastoplasm, dense particles, mitochondria, and Golgi material. It is suggested that the peculiar ultrastructure of these cytoplasmic components may be related to an intense metabolic activity.  相似文献

The Pacinian corpuscle has a framework of cytoplasmic lamellae arranged concentrically in the outer zone, and bilaterally in the core. Between these is an intermediate growth zone. The inner core shows an unexpected complexity in that its component lamellae are arranged in two symmetrical groups of nested cytoplasmic sheets. Longitudinal tissue spaces form clefts separating the two groups. The perikarya of the core lamellae lie in or near the intermediate growth zone, and send arms into the clefts. The arms then branch and terminate as lamellae which interdigitate with those of neighboring cells. The single nerve fiber loses its myelin sheath just before it reaches the inner core but retains its Schwann cell cytoplasmic covering for a short additional distance. The Schwann sheath is not continuous with the lamellae of the inner core. Inside the core the fiber contains a striking circumferential palisade of radially disposed mitochondria. The fiber does not arborize. Vascular capillaries penetrate the hilar region of the corpuscle only as far as the myelinated sheath of the nerve, and they have not been seen elsewhere in the corpuscle. There is direct continuity between the clefts of the core and tissue spaces in the vicinity of the capillaries. It is likely that this provides a route whereby metabolites reach the active nerve ending, as well as the cells of the growth zone. The outer zone consists of at least 30 flattened concentric cytoplasmic lamellae separated from one another by relatively wide fluid-filled spaces. Collagenous fibrils are present, particularly on the outer surface of lamellae, and tend to be oriented circularly. The girdle of proliferating cells constituting the growth zone, which is prominent in corpuscles from young animals, is the layer from which the outer lamellae are derived. Osmotic forces probably elevate the lamellae, and maintain turgor pressure.  相似文献

Illus. 1962.—Dark-grown Euglena gracilis cells, transferred from streptomycin (SM)-containing medium to SM-free medium 5 days before transfer to light, turn green normally, indicating that proplastids are unaffected by SM. SM-bleached cells, grown in light, contain numerous bodies composed of concentric lamellae (CL bodies). These differ from chloroplasts in that their lamellae lack electron-dense dots, are not coalesced, and they lack a 3-layered limiting membrane and pyrenoids. CL bodies are absent from dark-grown normal and dark-grown SM-bleached cells, as well as from light-grown normal cells. It is suggested that CL bodies result from a derangement of chloroplast synthesis caused by SM blockage of chlorophyll synthesis.  相似文献

The broncho-alveolar space of axolotl contains numerous osmiophilic structures, which have been classified morphologically into 3 types of inclusions. Type I inclusions exhibited lattices of square to rectangular grid patterns with membranous elements 6 nm thick. This lattice was crossed by a 2 nm dense line. Type II inclusions were composed of 7 nm dark lines and 15.5 nm light lines in an alternating repeating pattern. Furthermore, the light lines showed an intrapenoid line of 2 nm. Type III inclusions consisted of concentric whorls of lamellae similar in form to spider webs. Only type III inclusions were identified in grand alveolar cells.  相似文献

During initial stages of oogenesis, many nucleoli are adpressed to the inner membrane of the nuclear envelope. Small nucleolar fragments appear to traverse the pores of the nuclear envelope and accumulate in the perinuclear ooplasm as fibrogranular bodies. Mitochondria become closely associated with some of the fibrogranular bodies. In addition to ribosomes and polyribosomes that are present in small oocytes, lamellae of rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum (rER) increase greatly in number during early stages of differentiation. Some individual lamellae are attached at their ends to the outer membrane of the nuclear envelope. Many parallel lamellae of rER are then encountered as well as numerous circular profiles consisting of concentric loops of rER. Soon after the differentiation of the extensive system of rER, lipid droplets or spheres appear in the ooplasm and they are initially surrounded by many circular, concentric lamellae of rER. Initially, the number of concentric lamellae of rER surrounding a lipid droplet may vary from less than a dozen to more than two dozen. During middle and late phases of vitellogenesis, most of the lipid spheres that comprise the most numerous and significant component of the yolk are surrounded by only one or two concentric lamellae of rER (in some cases the lamellae are part rough-surfaced and part smooth-surfaced). In addition, annulate lamellae are then observed to be associated with a portion of the lipid droplet surface. The number of annulate lamellae that extend focally from the lipid sphere distally into the cytoplasm is variable; often two or three to more than a dozen lamellae. Small granules, many of which range from 6 to 12 nm and thin fibrils (approximately 2–3 nm in width) may be associated with the annulate lamellae. In addition, polyribosomes frequently appear to be continuous with the pore-associated material of the annulate lamellae. The ends of some annulate lamellae may extend as lamellae of the rER. The morphologic relationships and relationships and variations observed between the lipid droplets, rER, annulate lamellae, and polyribosomes during lipidogenesis in this oocyte are interpreted to support a recent hypothesis (Kessel, 1981a,b) that the pores of annulate lamellae may be involved in some manner with the processing of ribosomal subunits or precursors into functioning polyribosomes, and that their appearance in specific association with the surface of many lipid spheres and rER in the oocyte late in vitellogenesis may be related to the formation of additional functional polyribosomes necessary to complete the final synthesis of many lipid droplets that are present in the ooplasm of the full-grown oocyte.  相似文献

Hohl, Hans R. (University of Hawaii, Honolulu). Nature and development of membrane systems in food vacuoles of cellular slime molds predatory upon bacteria. J. Bacteriol. 90:755-765. 1965.-During the digestion of bacteria by the myxamoebae of cellular slime molds, systems of concentric lamellae begin to appear within the food vacuoles. Each constituent lamella is a unit membrane of 75 to 85 A thickness. A study of these lamellae in Dictyostelium discoideum and Polysphondylium pallidum reveals that most of them do not represent original membranes of the ingested bacteria but are formed mainly in two ways. (i) After swelling and partial digestion of the bacteria, the first membranes appear adjacent to pre-existing membranes, e.g., the membrane lining the food vacuole and the cytoplasmic membrane surrounding the bacterium. Progressive addition of lamellae leads to the formation of the systems of concentric lamellae. (ii) After digestion of the bacteria has proceeded to a high degree, the concentric lamellae are formed spontaneously from clouds of amorphous material through condensation and orientation of precursor material. The study shows that, in biological systems, unit membranes may be formed from amorphous material through template action of pre-existing membranes, and does not necessarily involve fusion of membrane-bound vesicles.  相似文献

HeLa cells from conventional culture media have been studied in thin sections with the electron microscope; in many cases cells were examined in sets of sections cut in series. The fine structure of the cells is described including three unusual features not hitherto reported. It has been found that numerous cells contained rows of parallel smooth surfaced cisternae spaced about 150 mµ apart and communicating with rough surfaced elements of the endoplasmic reticulum. These cisternae resembled "annulate lamellae" but did not contain regular arrays of pores. In many cells an area of juxtanuclear cytoplasm was occupied by a membranous structure composed of closely applied pairs of narrow cisternae either arranged in concentric rings or else extending in several directions in a haphazard manner. Sparse particles were present on the outer membranes of each pair of cisternae. Communications between the double cisternae and other membrane-bounded structures were not observed. A small number of cells contained areas of cytoplasm devoid of organelles and filled with amorphous fuzzy material. The observations recorded are discussed.  相似文献

贵州剑河寒武系凯里组软舌螺化石丰富、埋藏形式多样,其中以脊状单臂螺Haplophrentis carinatus化石数量最多、保存最为完整。过去有关学者对凯里组单臂螺化石的研究主要集中在化石分类学方面,对脊状单臂螺埋藏特征及与其他生物共生关系缺乏深入探讨。本文对324块脊状单臂螺化石标本进行系统研究对比后发现,凯里组脊状单臂螺口盖化石埋藏形式有四类:口盖单独保存、口盖以内模或外模化石形式保存、口盖与锥壳完全绞合保存、口盖与锥壳不完全绞合保存;附肢保存较少;锥壳多以内模化石形式保存;脊状单臂螺内模化石与印痕化石上普遍出现类似软体保存形成的三分叉结构,这类三分叉结构属于后期埋藏因素造成的次生结构。文中还对脊状单臂螺与始海百合共生关系进行探讨,并将二者共生关系归为偏害共生。  相似文献

Hyoliths are operculate calcareous shells found in Palaeozoic rocks. Runnegar et al. (1975) suggested that they be referred to a new phylum (Hyolitha) but Marek & Yochelson (1976) and Dzik (1978) preferred to regard them as an extinct class of the Mollusca. Since the hyolith cone is not easily homologized with the monoplacophoran shell, the exoskeletons of the shelled Mollusca and the Hyolitha appear to have developed independently. Reconstructions of the anatomy of hyoliths indicate that it is unlikely that both groups shared a common molluscan ancestor. Therefore, hyoliths are probably not molluscs. Previous reconstructions of articulated hyolithids have suggested that left and right appendages (helens) curved dorsally. Crushed articulated specimens from the Burgess Shale indicate that this conclusion is incorrect; hyoltthid helens seem to have curved ventrally when the animals were alive.  相似文献

Illus. 1963.—The cellular morphology of Symploca muscorum is described, based upon electron micrographs utilizing improved techniques of specimen preparation. Except for a limiting plasma membrane, ribosomes, and Feulgen-positive chromatin, the cells have little resemblance to those of higher organisms. The longitudinal components of the cellular envelope consist of a 200–300 mμ fibrous sheath and a complex inner investment about 35 mμ thick which includes at least 3 distinctly layered wall elements in addition to the typical 7-mμ unit membrane forming the plasma membrane. A row of very small elongate “pores” pierce the inner investment on each side of, and immediately adjacent to, the junction of the longitudinal walls and the crosswalls. Crosswalls vary in thickness from 3 to 20 mμ, depending upon their age, and arise as elaborations of the inner layers of the longitudinal inner investment. The photosynthetic lamellar component of the cytoplasm consists of flattened sacs formed from unit membranes. The lamellae are concentrated in the peripheral region of the cell and usually are parallel to the longitudinal wall. These often extend from one crosswall to the next but, except for a few cases, are not continuous with the plasma membrane at either end. The Feulgen-positive nucleoplasm appears as an anastomosing system of lightstaining regions containing fibrils 2–5 mμ in diameter. The morphology and interrelationship of a number of other cellular elements are described: (1) structured granules range up to 0.5μ in diameter and occur near crosswalls; (2) polyhedral bodies, 0.2–0.5μ in diameter, are closely associated with the nucleoplasm; (3) “cylindrical bodies” characteristically consist of 2 concentric cylinders, are about 13 mμ in diameter and up to lμ in length; (4) “α granules” are spherical or somewhat elongate elements about 30 mμ in diameter and characteristically associated with the photosynthetic lamellae and structured granules; (5) “β granules” are spherical, highly osmiophilic granules which range from 30 to 90 mμ in diameter; (6) ribosomes, 10–15 mμ, in diameter, are most numerous near the nucleoplasm; (7) plasmodesms penetrate the crosswalls between adjacent cells. The cells of this organism can best be described as being in a “steady state” of division, and there is no evidence of any kind of organized distribution of the nucleoplasm to daughter cells during the constant progress of cytokinesis.  相似文献

Carpospore differentiation in Faucheocolax attenuata Setch. can be separated into three developmental stages. Immediately after cleaving from the multinucleate gonimoblast cell, young carpospores are embedded within confluent mucilage produced by gonimoblast cells. These carpospores contain a large nucleus, few starch grains, concentric lamellae, as well as proplastids with a peripheral thylakoid and occasionally some internal (photosynthetic) thylakoids. Proplastids also contain concentric lamellar bodies. Mucilage with a reticulate fibrous substructure is formed within cytoplasmic concentric membranes, thus giving rise to mucilage sacs. Subsequently, these mucilage sacs release their contents, forming an initial reticulate deposition of carpospore wall material. Dictyosome vesicles with large, single dark-staining granules also contribute to wall formation and may create a separating layer between the mucilage and carpospore wall. During the latter stages of young carpospores, starch is polymerized in the perinuclear cytoplasmic area and is in close contact with endoplasmic reticulum. Intermediate-aged carpospores continue their starch polymerization. Dictyosomes deposit more wall material, in addition to forming fibrous vacuoles. Proplastids form thylakoids from concentric lamellar bodies. Mature carpospores are surrounded by a two-layered carpospore wall. Cytoplasmic constituents include large floridean starch granules, peripheral fibrous vacuoles, mature chloroplasts and curved dictyosomes that produce cored vesicles which in turn are transformed into adhesive vesicles. Pit connections remain intact between carpospores but begin to degenerate. This degeneration appears to be mediated by microtubules.  相似文献

该文的软舌螺标本采自贵州省台江县八郎村中寒武世地层,计有Haplophrentis?reesei,H.?carinatus,Hyolithes?cf.idahoensis,H.?cf.cariniferus,H.?sp.,Cambrovitus balangensis gen.sp.nov.,Notabititidae gen.et sp.uncertain.。其层位位于梅树村动物群和澄江动物群之上。地层时代与北美布吉斯页岩的时代相当,两地的软舌螺可直接对比。更为可贵的是在方Haplophrentis?carinatus的腹内视标本中发现了直肠和伸缩肌软体印痕。  相似文献

On the Lamellar Structure of the Tracheid Cell Wall   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Abstract: It is clear that cross sections of wood cells show a lamellar structure. This paper investigates the orientation of this lamellar structure of spruce (Picea abies) tracheids using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cross sections of spruce wood were produced through fracturing in longitudinal bending and tensile testing. When investigated with SEM, the fracture surfaces show a structure of mostly larger radial lamellae, in the order of 30 - 100 nm, i.e., agglomerations of a few cellulose aggregates. Thin transverse sections of the fracture zones investigated with atomic force microscopy show concentric lamellae with a width in the order of a single cellulose aggregate, i.e., 15 - 25 nm. No structural connection to the splinters in the radial direction can be seen. It is suggested that the radial lamellar structure is a consequence of the energy released during fracturing of the wood samples and that the undistorted wood has a concentric lamellar structure on a smaller structural level.  相似文献

Chloroplast development and ultrastructure of the freshwater red alga Batrachospermum moniliforme are described. Chloroplasts develop from proplastids which have a double-membraned chloroplast envelope and a parallel double-membraned outer photo-synthetic lamella. Of these 2 double-membraned structures of the proplastid, only the outermost pho-tosynthetic lamella functions in production of further lamellae. The mature chloroplast consists of 2 or more concentric lamellae and a variable number of nonconcentric lamellae. These lamellae are not dense, uninterrupted sheets as described for other red algae, but are largely constructed of tubules, lying side by side, that form interrupted lamellar sheets. The possible physiological significance of lamellar interruptions in providing path-ways for movement of materials in the chloroplast stroma is discussed.  相似文献

Developing oocytes, ranging from approximately 0.1 to 1.0 mm in diameter, in Necturus were studied with the electron microscope. The outer layer of the nuclear envelope is actively engaged in the formation of vesicular elements along most of its surface, especially in smaller oocytes. Groups of vesicles appear to be released into the ooplasm at about the same time, resulting in long chains of individual vesicles immediately adjacent to the nuclear membrane. This process is repeated so that chains of vesicles grouped in rather ordered ranks extend progressively into the surrounding cytoplasm. Eventually, the cytoplasm becomes more concentrated with chains of vesicles and the distance between the individual rows becomes less. Very soon after a chain of vesicles has been budded off from the nuclear membrane, fine intervesicular connections appear between certain of the vesicles comprising the rows. Several of the vesicles in a row may then fuse, forming short, flattened cisternae. Fusion of vesicles continues, individual rows of vesicles become more closely packed and, finally, regions appear in the cytoplasm which have the appearance of annulate lamellae. Further growth of the lamellae appears to occur by the progressive fusion of vesicles at the ends of those lamellae already present, as well as by the addition of other fusing rows of vesicles.  相似文献

A study, mainly by electron microscopy, has been made on two leg muscles of rat, in the course of atrophy experimentally induced by total denervation. As a preliminary the chief distinctive features of the soleus, chosen as a representative of pure red muscle, and of the gastrocnemius, representative of pure white muscle, are described. Two major phases of atrophy, somewhat overlapping in time, were observed. In the first, a degenerative autolytic process takes place in areas of the fiber, with loss of striation. It can be detected as early as the 7th day, but the maximum is observed at the 14th day, and accounts for a gross weight loss of 50 per cent. The first alteration appears in the Z lines; disorder in the disposition of filaments then follows. The process occurs very rapidly, leaving large areas in the cell in which one can detect only ground substance, glycogen, rare randomly disposed vesicular elements, and some mitochondria. Several lysosomes and masses of lipoproteins, which assume the configuration of concentric lamellae, show up in these fibers. Subsequently large parts of the waste sarcoplasm are discarded into the intercellular spaces. In the second major phase the so called "simple" atrophy takes place. The process starts early, but its effects are more detectable after 1 month. In this period, single myofibrils undergo different degrees of reduction in diameter, while the spatial disposition of primary and secondary filaments inside the fibrils remains normal. The appearance of the fibrils in longitudinal sections suggests that the process takes place by the detachment of filaments from the periphery of the fibrils and by their subsequent breakdown in the interfibrillary spaces. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is still well preserved, and relatively overdeveloped. Mitochondria disappear in parallel with the contractile material.  相似文献

The two distinct types of cytoplasm seen with the light microscope in the adipose cell of the leech Glossiphonia complanata have been identified in the electron microscope image of this cell. One of these, the basophil cytoplasm, contains many well oriented, paired membranes which are much more clearly evident when calcium ions are added to the fixative. The membranes sometimes appear as concentric arrays of lamellae and are thought to represent sections through a phospholipide-containing body. The paired membranes and the concentric lamellae have granules attached to them and resemble in size and structure the membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum encountered in many mammalian cells. Small dense cytoplasmic particles are present throughout the cell; they may be ferritin molecules, derived from the breakdown of haemoglobin taken in as food. On the basis of a previous histochemical study and the present electron microscope investigation, it is suggested that these paired membranes are similar to the organized type of mammalian ER and the results seem to confirm the belief that these membranes are composed of layers of phospholipoprotein together with attached particles of ribonucleoprotein.  相似文献
